I have a love-hate relationship with punk.

Intellectually I get the whole kicking-against-the-establishment thing and the DIY ethic.  I recognise that in the late 70s these bands were a shock to the ears of a public accustomed to disco and prog-rock. I even get the primal desire to jump around and bash into each other.

But, I typically struggle with the reality of the recordings. The sloppy vocal stylings, trashy guitar and haphazard rhythms just ain’t that shocking through a 21st century lens.   What I mean is that it just doesn’t seem that dangerous or rebellious, and instead can be a bit of a chore.

This album is a case in point.  The DKs were at the forefront of shocking the conservative US, what with their name, their expletives and (elsewhere) supposedly perverse album covers. They dished up an angry, sarcastic critique of early 80s Californian and American mundanity and tyranny.

That’s all and good, but much of this compilation just sounds just sound like poorly constructed Cramps ‘tunes’ and Stooges outtakes.

When the band do get it right, they get it very right, however. Their most famous tracks (i.e. the first three plus Holiday in Cambodia) are justifiably subcultural icons.

Rihanna se ha convertido en una de las morenitas mas deseadas de la farandula, desde que aparecio moviendo ese apetecible traserito que tan bien sacude. Convirtiendose en la competencia directa de Beyonce, ha cosechado bastante exito en el mundo del pop, en el cual, pese al despecho de las rubias, las afroamericanas se estan posicionando en las nuevas mandamas de la industria. Pero basta de palabreria, vayamos a lo que a todos nos interesa. Y lo que mas nos interesa de la bella Rihanna es su fisico y por eso todos vamos a disfrutar las imagenes en las que la morenita se le ocurrio ponerse una ¿vestido? practicamente inexistente, del cual sus suculentas tetas color chocolate pareciann escaparsele en todo instante. Bien, muy bien mamacita, a todos nos gusto tu modelito y esperamos que se haga muy popular… la neta!!!

Esto si que es la madre del cordero. La joya de la corona (nunca mejor dicho). Las raices del metal extremo, el nacimiento del Grindcore. Quien iba a decir, que bandas como Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, Godflesh, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, etc. Serían lo que son hoy, o por  lo menos, lo que han conseguido desde esos principios. Cuando nadie hubiera dado nada por un grupo de amigos, donde lo único que hacían era reivindicarse y hacer “ruido”. Quien se iba a molestar en seguir o creer en unos grupos de esa calaña.

Bendita se su música, digo yo. Bendito sea John Peel, por esas majestuosas grabaciones en sus Peel Sessions allá  finales de los 80, y gracias a Earache por sacarlo en un magistral y precioso compacto de tres cds.

No pensarlo mucho, no pensarlo por favor.  Esto hay que comprarselo ya.

En el CD 1. Napalm Death y Extreme Noise Terror . Con la fríolera de  56 temas en el que podemos degustar esos termendos y sucios ritmazos, que los fundadores del maravilloso Grindcore, hacían. Apretaros el cinturón, por que vienen veloces.

Ha … sounds like a cross between Harry Potter and LOTR

As I mentioned recently, Iggy is having another comeback in New Zealand courtesy of Orcon and a remake of The Passenger.

It’s a nice use of marketing, social media, and an aging proto-punk and works a hell of a lot better than I would have expected.  For example, the campaign closely links with Facebook.

Green Day is really a band you can’t help but like! They’re cute, they have attitude and amazing vocals with intriguing lyrics. While they are one of my favorite bands ever, they are also the source of one of my biggest pet peeves. GREEN DAY IS NOT PUNK! They are pop-punk, and there is a large difference. What it means is they are a pop band with punk themes and undertones on some of their music. When they started out they were more involved with the punk side, while now they are drifting towards “the dark side” (pop music). For example – here is their song Holiday, which has a great punk sound and attitude to it!

But on the other hand, listen to Wake Me When September Ends. It is a clear case of “Pop that wants to be emo”

Please keep in mind that I am not dissing Green Day in any way, shape or form, because I adore them and their music.

Another interesting thing that many people don’t know about them is just how long they have been around.  They started making music in 1987 when Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt were 15 under the band name Sweet Children, and switched to the name Green Day in 1989. The name refers to their fondness for marijuana. Over the years they have been continually becoming more well known.

In 2004 they released the controversial (and totally amazing) album American Idiot. There was no middle ground – you either loved it with all your heart, or hated the music and band for it.

And recently they released their newest album Know Your Enemy, song posted above.

There seems to be an undeniable “X Factor” associated with Hedley that just pushes their originality, uniqueness, and enthusiasm over the edge into quite the stellar package. Time has flown by as it was only over four years ago that Hedley truly came to fruition, and when it comes to the journey they have been on since that time, the boys haven’t looked back and are continuing to make their mark within the music industry. Hedley is back and ready to rock with their newly released album The Show Must Go, which hit the shelves November 17th and has already rocketed up the charts and can be heard all over the radio with hit singles, “Cha-Ching,” and “Don’t Talk to Strangers.”

Named after a small town in British Columbia, Canada, Hedley became the band we know and love today after Jacob Hoggard gained recognition as a solid performer during his rise in TV show Canadian Idol. Hoggard was even picked by many to win the competition but wanted to pursue singing on his terms, true to who he was and what he believed in, unofficially suggesting that fans not vote for him to continue on in the show. Their songs can be “hard-hitting” in both senses of the word; some of their songs have incredible instrumentals that are hit hard and fast with an upbeat and intense sound, while others are “hard-hitting” with the words and subsequent meanings behind them. There seems to be a lot of emotion put into many of Hedley’s songs, many of which are easily relatable, and no matter how fast-paced the beat is, Hedley has a distinct ability to make listeners feel and believe the truths of their lyrics and bring their songs to life to create new meanings for listeners. With The Show Must Go, Hedley has a fun array of songs with interesting titles including “Sweater Song,” “9 Shades of Red,” and “Cha-Ching,” but equally diverse types of music that provide an acoustic range to the album. From the upbeat and urban “Don’t Talk to Strangers” to the power ballad of “Perfect,” to the fun and bubbly “Hands Up,” The Show Must Go has quite the range within it, but remains true to the distinct sounds of Hedley that most of us know and love.

There are many reasons why I love the internet, but the most important for me is the randomness of discovery.

The last few days I’ve been jiving on lots of garage, mod, protopunk and 60s pop.  Reading about protopunk took me to discover and download some music from a band called ? The Mysterians.  They were the first band to ever be described as “punk.”

I was talking about about ? and the Mysterians on the radio last week when a Zoner far wiser than I called up to say, “The Mysterians might have been called the first punk band, but the actual first hard rocking punkers were a 1960 garage band from Seattle called The Sonics.”

The Sonics?  Sure enough, they have a groovy harsh punker sound.  I went to iTunes to try and find one of their classic records, either ‘Here are the Sonics’ or ‘Boom.” Sadly, neither were available.  But searching led me to a podcast for a theatre sound technician form the UK named Steve Brown.  Steve’s blog/podcast is nothing but audio soundscapes and weirdness.

I ended up poking around there this evening listening to the sounds of streets in Brighton or Seoul or wherever Steve decided to plant a mic and hit record.  One of my favourite posts is this audio/visual collage of Cold War era radio transmissions.  Very geeky stuff for you audiophiles find my blog.  I subscribed to his podcast.  Lots of great stuff to inspire and maybe one day sample for a project.

Coral and I took Mads to Coquitlam this weekend for a little visit.  Coral bought a book on the boat called “The Book of Negros,” by Lawrence Hill.  Coral can’t put it down.  I’ll need to get in line to read it when she’s done.

The book basically follows the life of a young girl who is captured in her village in West Africa.  She is 11 years old and sent to the Americas to become a slave.  She gets freed during the American Revolution and is resettled in Nova Scotia before returning to Sierra Leone.

While reading, Coral occasionally pops up to ask me about some historical event that they mention in the novel, like Saint Helena Island or the old French colony of Saint Domingue.   I’d find it for her, do a quick read then have to keep poking around.  Saint Domingue is now Haiti!  One of the poorest countries (and THE poorest in the West) in the world.  But in the colonial times, it was the wealthiest colony.  Haiti was the site of a slave rebellion that led to its independence, the only successful slave rebellion in Earth’s history.  And yet 200 years later, the country is in shambles.  Its sad to think about.  In the late 1700s and early 1800, these black slaves are besting the armies of Britain, Spain, and Napoleon’s France… but get successfully manage their resources, and today the nation is broke and the people are poor.

The book isn’t about the slave rebellion of Haiti, but they mention it in the book… the whites in British colonies are freaking out, “what if it happens here?”
