I’m a part of Generation X.

I’m part of the last generation to live through the cold war, and the first generation to do worse than their parents.

I lived through the 80’s before they became retro.

I watched TV in black and white, and my phone actually had a dial—not buttons. I remember a life before call-waiting.

I witnessed first hand the death of disco and the birth of punk rock.

I’m old enough to be pissed off by remakes of the movies from my youth.

I’m old enough to know that the now-retro fashion choices coming back into popularity were a bad idea the first time around.

My cartoons were hand drawn, and when I read, I chose my own adventure.

Old.

I’m old enough to be annoyed by teenagers and never get carded for beer anymore.

I’m old enough to remember when MTV played music.

Most importantly, I’m old enough to be nostalgic for my youth.

That’s why I find myself trolling the web for bits and pieces of it every now and then…

Now, I’ll admit…

I didn’t really develop much of a life until the 90’s. I spent far more time with the Ricker and Arnold Jackson than I did real people.

That’s probably why most of the memories from my youth are centered around the television.

So look forward to more trips, or perhaps more to wit, staggers down memory lane from time to time…

I leave you with this little gem from the 80’s. I (sadly) spent a lot of beautiful Saturday afternoons locked indoors watching this…

When Chuck forced Blair and Serena to work out their differences in an elevator on Monday, I got to thinking, do people in real life ever get trapped in elevators? The idea of elevator malfunctions moving plotlines isn’t new. I can go way back to Punky Brewster delivering a baby in an elevator, and more importantly, saving it from a lifetime of being named Herman. I’m sure you all can go back farther than that.

And so my question to you is:

What is your favorite trapped in an elevator scene?

This can also be extended to include any scene/episode in which characters were trapped in an enclosed space other than an elevator. Also, bonus points if you tell a personal tale of being stuck in an elevator long enough to finally make a move on someone, make up with a friend, perform surgery, or deliver a kid.

Had a spectacular time at Chewy’s Rockeoke-inspired 32nd birthday bash last night.

We played a lot of truly horrible, yet mind-blowingly magnificent songs with a mix-and-match lineup starring various members of the Mijares family, and Chewy’s friends from all over.

I can’t recall exactly what song was the most painful to play through, but I do remember feeling like I was violating my hardcore 90s rock n’ roll roots by the time we were knee-deep in playing true relics best-forgotten, like Alamid’s “Your Love” and the 4 Non-Blonde’s “What’s Up.”

MDJ Superstar just had to close his eyes and flash back to happier days when truly awesome music was on my set list, like Guns n’ Roses and Green Day.

I also remembered why the bass guitar is my weapon of choice – it provides the most real estate with which to hide my tummy bone.

I am also realizing that white jeans are totally unflattering for chunky, heavy-set males such as The Superstar.

As much as I think that our awesomest cover of the night was a heavy metal opera remake of Miss Saigon’s “Last Night Of The World”, there is one song that I think truly deserves to be revived and revitalized for today’s Children Of The 2000s.

Alone.

This, my friends, was the true start of emo, but nobody had realized it yet at the time.

P.S. I must say, however, that Bryan Adams’ “Heaven” deserves honorable mention on this list. Seriously. You sing this to any girl, her pink Punky Brewster panty is dropping to the floor in 4 seconds flat.

Today I spent over two hours changing every reference to my daughters on this blog and gave them new

Today I spent over two hours changing every reference to my daughters on this blog and gave them new nicknames. I listened to an Online Ministry Conference session the other day and the speaker Darcy shared her reasons for giving her kids nicknames on her blog. (And if you haven’t read her blog, you must. She is hilarious.)

I never thought about not using my girls’ names. I figure anyone that wants to know can easily find out, and I don’t use pictures so I wasn’t too worried about privacy. Yet, Darcy brought up a great point. She said that she shared much personal medical info about one of her sons and she didn’t want a future employer googling him later in life and reading his history.

Well. I got to thinking about that. I googled my girls, and yep…there they were on Google! One could really learn quite a bit about them just from my little stories here. I talked it over with my hubby and we decided to leave our girls’ names out of my blogging for now.

Since I’m not using their names, I briefly contemplated sharing some photos here, but ultimately decided against it. I have had too many experiences with creepy people in this world to feel comfortable posting their beautiful faces for all to see. As my husband told them, “Maybe if you weren’t so pretty.” I wish I was joking, but he actually said this.

I love looking at the beautiful pictures other moms post of their kids, and I don’t judge anyone who does. I think each family has to make those decisions based on their own experiences and prayers. I’ll just say, once you’ve dealt with a stalker, you’d rather err on the side of paranoid.

So, after I decided, I set about the task of renaming my children.

Coco was easy. It’s been her real nickname at home forever, and she named her blog Coco Around the World.

Choosing a fitting name for my six year old proved not to be so easy. Her nickname at home is a shortened version of her name. Though we did use to call her wreckin’ ball when she was a toddler. That just didn’t seem nice anymore. So, I enlisted her help and we had great fun thinking of options. Her favorite was Sweet Honey Pie. Cute. But, um, no. I wanted to call her Ramona. Because she is so Ramona Quimby. “But Mom!” She cried. “You know Ramona’s a brat! Why don’t you just call me Bratty McBrat Brat?”

Well, I was tempted.

Then, we were watching old home movies that night. In every other scene, my voice (my face always behind the camera) is calling out to my little crawling baby…. ”There’s my Sunshine!” Yes! It fully describes her sunny little self. But Coco had a sort of Frenchy-chic ring to it so I decided to look up Sunshine in French. Soleil! I was sold. I mean, for those of you that don’t know, Soleil is the real life name of no other than Punky Brewster, the ten year old girl who influenced my childhood like perhaps no other person alive. You know, the one with the coolest bedroom ever? Punky Power!

(…a little while later, back from my Netflix queue. Punky on the way!)

I’d appreciate it if those of you that know my little ones kindly call them by their nicknames here on my blog, my twitter, or public facebook page. And please, remind me when I slip and include their real names in a post. ‘Cause I will. I just know it.

But anyway. Back to my Soleil. My little sunshine. And Coco. My soon-to-be teenager.

That’s how they’ll be known around here from now on. What do you think?

Remember Pippi Longstocking? Like the colorful girls before her and after her (Annie, Punky Brewster) she lived a hard life as well. But she was so full of hope, wonder, and optimism, and imagination. Pippi didn’t let life get to her, and it showed in her clothing. She would wear large jumper dresses with colorful stockings and boots. Even though she was a tomboy, she had a girly side to her. (And we can’t forget that hair!) But she gives us hope when we watched her, and that’s what we all need…Especially in this rough economy.

Typically we start these interviews off with some form of catchy, literary introduction. We’re going to dive right into this one without wasting any time.

Cherie Johnson is an actress and producer. Born in Pittsburgh, Cherie is best known for her roles on the sitcoms Punky Brewster and Family Matters.

On Punky Brewster Johnson starred as Cherie Johnson, a character named and modeled after herself. She was the best friend of the title character, played by Soleil Moon Frye. She played the role throughout the series’ run (1984–1986 and 1987–1988) with her actual grandmother Susie Garrett.

On Family Matters, Johnson portrayed the recurring role of Maxine, the best friend of Laura Winslow (Kellie Shanygne Williams). Johnson played the role from 1990–1998.

Johnson is the real life niece of TV producer David W. Duclon, who was responsible for starting her career. In addition to her starring roles, she has made guest appearances on The Parkers, and The Proud Family. She has also appeared on the soap opera Days of our Lives.

FathersFootprints was fortunate to secure a rare interview with Cherie. Here’s what she had to say:

You got your start in the business in 1985. How did you get your start?

CHERIE: My uncle created a show and thought it would be great to use my name. I felt if he used my name I should play the part myself. After seven auditions the head of NBC at the time felt the same way and I got the JOB!

You played yourself opposite Soleil Moon Frye in the 1980’s sitcom Punky Brewster. What did you like most about that experience?

CHERIE: Well I did not play myself I just played a little girl with the same name. Every day on the set was like a party and I got to see my best friend Soleil! We were lucky we really got to be children.

In addition to your television roles, you also have film credits on your resume. Which film did you most enjoy and why?

CHERIE: I’d have to say my latest film “I Do….I Did” for several reasons: 1) I wrote it; 2) I produced it; and 3) I was able to play a different character that many of my fans do not like because she isn’t that little sweet Cherie everyone is use to seeing. She is mean at times and vindictive which was so much fun. Also, instead of being happy go lucky, I got to cry and express emotions. I worked with my cousin, Shar Jackson, and my best friend, Antwon Tanner. The production crew was a dream. Twenty-seven years of smiling is boring. I’m glad I got a chance to spice it up.

The television and film industries are much different than they were when you got your start. What advice do you have for young aspiring actors looking to break into the industry?

CHERIE: Don’t sit back and let other people control your dreams. You have to make your dreams happen for yourself; they will not fall out of the sky.

You are a part of Delano Glass’ film “Why Do Men Cheat?” What was it like working with Delano?

CHERIE: Delano is a wonderful, creative genius. He sets a great atmosphere and really allows you be yourself, which is great. The topic is sensitive to many people and he really didn’t censor me so I was able to express my true feeling and opinions.

Last week we celebrated Michelle Thomas’ birthday through a special tribute on this site (see Remembering Michelle). You worked with Michelle on the sitcom Family Matters. What was it like to work with her?

CHERIE: She is one of the most kind-hearted people I have ever met. When you are around her you can’t help but to smile. I read your tribute and cried like a baby. It’s really hard for me sometimes. I’m still in denial about her being gone until someone asks me about her, then I’m forced to deal with the reality. I know she is in a better place and she is my angel in heaven as she was my angel on earth.

What can we expect from you in the near future?

CHERIE: 2009 has been a great year for me. I have done 6 films which will be released within the next 2 years, that not only have I starred in, but also produced several of them. I have a book deal my first book “Cherie On Top” which should be out at the end of the year. I have several songs on the radio over seas, so with an international tour forthcoming – the sky is the limit. I have one life and I want to do it all.

We are eternally grateful that our sister took the time to provide us with a peek into her world. We hope to continue to bring you features and updates on the blacks that help to form our entertainment and literary culture.

Until next time,

Apparently, Soleil Moon Frye wants to bring back Punky Brewster, the ’80s children show that made her famous. However, why do we want a comeback, she bought horse teeth and cut her boobs off. Sounds like a waste to me, but maybe you disagree. Check out her video after the jump!

John Dermot Woods’s The Complete Collection of People, Places, and Things is so si

John Dermot Woods’s The Complete Collection of People, Places, and Things is so singluarly itself I’m having a hard time coming up with clever comparisons or examples of what it’s like. Honestly: this book is largely unlike anything I’ve ever seen: it’s got some of the metafictional playfulness of, say, Barth or Coover or Barthelme or Wallace, but there’s a strong and beating heart underneath it all, too, a heart invested and involved not just with the postmodern trickery of naming characters after pop culture references (Punky Brewster, Optimus Prime, Voltron), and not just with using cultural touchstones in new ways (a man reported for walking around with his Velcro hanging out for all to see), but with actually telling stories.

Because that’s the set-up: The Complete Collection is a story within a story: the text the reader gets is, supposedly, the text this old man collector’s been collecting (and so in some ways we’re in House of Leaves/Zampano + J. Truant territory). But it’s more complex than that: the old man’s trying to record everything, but the tips of his pens keep breaking, and so a young man offers him a set of erasable ballpoints—so then there’s young and old mixing, and the idea of old stories needing new instruments to be fully written. Plus the narrator, at the start, gets into the incredibly rich and dicey territory of wholeness vs. incompleteness. Here:

It was the complete reality of his accounts that made them so unapproachable. His descriptions were ultimately comprehensive; his world was one that left no luxury for erosion. Its reality was certainly what prevented his notebooks from being printed (and reprinted). The book only lives on in my flawed memory and the memory of the others of my time who had the opportunity to read his hand-scrawled notes.

…and so what the reader gets, both in and through the actual narrative of The Complete Collection (which includes a near overload of disparate and wild things—the Velcro bit from above, plus a Bear who uses his friend Optimus Prime as a sort of puppet [Optimus Prime is a guy, not the Transformer; he's also, right at the book's start, elected Mayor]), plus there’s Danger Mouse, who claims to be the happiest man in the world…there’s just too much), is this consideration of what is story, what is ‘authentic,’ what makes something real. That thing above, how Optimus Prime is actually a dude and not the Transformer? There’s all sorts of cultural stuff repurposed, and there’s (I think) no way to read the book without realizing that you’re intimately involved in the narrative, the same way the narrator is at the start. Old man, new pens? Old names and touchstones, new identities/ideas behind each. Plus I haven’t even mentioned that the book is, actually, about this small town’s destruction, or that the book’s got pictures throughout and so jumps/goes beyond the straight-narrative bent you’d maybe expect a book with this sort of mental firepower. Please just know that there’s a level of richness here that you really, really have to see/experience/consume to believe.

I can’t stress enough how satisfying this book is, intellectually, which is a great accomplishment on its own. That said, The Complete Collection is more than just awesome mental gymnastics and theortical pushing and pulling: you may not care about the characters in this book the way you’d care about characters in a more straightforward book of fiction, but don’t for a second be fooled into thinking that this is some post-ironic hipster gesture using pop culture elements in service of some merely clever or merely cute project. Woods has, from what I can see, tried hard to do the hardest work there is to do, in or outside the pages of a book: he’s tried, simply and complexly, to make meaning. It’s a hell of a book. Buy it, steal it, read it, send Mr. Woods an email: all of the above.

(Also, a huge shoutout to BlazeVOX, a publisher I should’ve long ago mentioned in the same breath as the rest of the great smaller presses—Graywolf, Soft Skull, Two Dollar Radio, Dzanc. They do good, good work.)

Here’s the Problem: I grew up with this girl. Not Soleil Moon Frye, but Punky Brewster. She was my imaginary friend (yes, I realize she was an actual character and my imagination wasn’t running on all cylinders, but give me a break). Punky was to blame if a lamp broke or if I dropped my broccoli on the floor. She was a great companion to my sad only-child self. When I found out she…er… Soleil had a twitter, I was all over it. Until I realized she was like this.

Actual Problem: Listen, we had some good times when I was young but now we’ve both grown up, so please:

Don’t call me “Twitterville”, it makes me want to rainbow barf on your cuffed jeans,

Don’t try to go home again. Anything this desperate is better accomplished with a straight-edge,

And, bitch, try being Punky again without giving credit to Glomer and I’ll let everyone know who really threw that guard party kegger at my house, lost the front door knob and slept with Sharon’s* boyfriend.

*Names have been changed to protect actual humans

**Thanks to Nora for bringing this to my attention. She might be entering the wrong side of 25 tomorrow, but she’s still got it! For now…

As a lifelong TV enthusiast (addict?), there has always been a character I could look up to. When I was five, I wanted to be Mallory Keaton. When I was eight, I hoped to be come some combination of Vicki from Small Wonder and Punky Brewster. In sixth grade, I was all about Clarissa Explains It All. You get the picture.

As a wife/mom, there are a million television woman I could be looking to for inspiration. The pinnacle, of course, is Claire Huxtable. A partner at a law firm and mother of five who still has time to make dinner, spend quality time with her family, take in additional needy children, and invent scheme after elaborate scheme to teach important lessons to her loved ones – now that is good. Sadly, I think I have the potential to be more like a Lois from Malcolm in the Middle – harried, loud, and prone to serving her children lumpy milk. Or even worse, as I have been accused on my worst days, the obnoxiously opinionated Carrie Heffernan. Ouch.

In reality, I think I should probably be aiming for someone who’s neither perfect nor a total loser. Someone like, say, Kitty Forman.

Kitty Forman from "That 70's Show"

She is a nurse, baker, and true caretaker to all those 70’s kids, but it is not beyond her to have a drink or a smoke or engage in a little sabotage. She’s kind of nerdy in her affinity for square dancing, her dog, and saying things like “Do crafts! Not drugs!”, although she is still considered a MILF by her son’s friends. Yes, Kitty, I think you set the bar just high enough to be my TV role model.

I know: LAME. But let’s muddle through anyway, ok? Over there in the right sidebar, you can see all the recent tweets from yours truly. I DO love me some Twitter, as I’m a lazy-assed bastard and don’t always feel like firing up the WordPress to give my snap judgment on Celtics rumors, Perez Hilton’s doucheraggery, or which former female child star got hotter than two muskrats fucking in a wool sock.

(Honestly, that link is one fine piece of internettin’. Just some great image huntin’ & YouTube wranglin’ on there. Winnie Cooper was in a movie called “Hack”, where she played a slutty teenage vixen who does the nasty with her stepdad?! HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS!?!? All of them are smokin’ but if I had to hand out 3 tickets to ride the BradenTrain, they’d go to Punky, Winnie, and Lacey Chabert. A few more to add to that list would be:

The Lohan (From every Disney thing made in the 90’s, later of Mean Girls and every E! Show ever)

Kaley Cuoco (from The Big Bang Theory, previously from 8 Simple Rules)

and of course, Alyson Hanigan. (How I Met Your Mother & Buffy)

Wait, wasn’t I talking about Twitter? Right.

Sorry.

But if you are hankering to get your Colt Monday psuedo-mental-jism mainlined directly into your malnourished brainstem; well, we’re not there yet. But Twitter is the best thing you’re going to get for now, until I can figure out how to launch digital lawn jarts at your ugly skulls.

The Wife:

Cat Deeley really hates Thursdays, and nothing makes me love her more than her mama bear attitude toward all of the Top 20 dancers on this reality dance show competition program we like to call Dancey Dance. She earned a thousand extra adorable points for me last night by choosing to follow up Wednesday’s ruffle kerfuffle with a sleek double breasted white suit, which, after seeing the group number, I decided was an intentional move on Cat’s part to reflect the style and costuming of the piece, thus giving the show’s introduction a smooth and cohesive appearance.

That opening number, by the way, was brought to us by Mia Michaels. In it, the Top 18 donned black business suits, black lipstick and face-obscuring mokos (the traditional form of facial tattooing amongst the Maori of New Zealand) while dancing to “Higher Ground” by Stevie Wonder amid bright photo-studio flashbulbs and projections of the dancers’ mokoed faces on the big SYTYCD screen. Although I knew last night’s piece would be Mia’s (because Nigel teased Brandon about it on Wednesday), I had my doubts during the choreography of this piece. This isn’t to say it was un-Mia, as I know she does have a fondness for tribal dance (which you can see in her Top 4 number from last year, which was brought down by some poor costuming decisions), but it was almost more Sonya Tayeh in its strictness of movement. Ah, but then the dancers launched their bodies in the air, nearly four feet off the ground as horizontally and fluidly as possible and I was once again sure it was a Mia Michaels piece.

I made a note to myself to think about the piece overnight and try to divine its meaning, so here’s the best I’ve got: this piece was about the loss of cultural identity in Western culture. It reminded me very much of one of the books I wrote my thesis on, Jill Ciment’s The Tattoo Artist, which is about a 1920s bohemian artist who ends up shipwrecked on the island of Ta’un’uu with her lover, only to be forcibly tattooed (on their faces, no less) by the natives and assimilated into their culture. After about 60 years spent on the island, Sarah (the protagonist) fully loses her Western identity and becomes one of the most revered tattooists on Ta’un’uu. In the end, she returns to New York City to be photographed for Life magazine after a journalist somehow finds her on Ta’un’uu and has trouble reconciling the person she was before Ta’un’uu with the person she became there. Only, Mia’s piece is something of the opposite. It’s like what Sarah’s experience would have been at that Life magazine photoshoot: the flashbulbs illuminating her face, the contours of her mouth obscured by five concentric circles of pitch black ink. It was about the process of assimilating culture in the reverse of the assimilation of The Tattoo Artist: it was about appropriating the Maori traditions and turning them into faceless, nameless entities to be repackaged in a way pleasing to the Western eye (the business suits). Nothing illuminated that more for me than the brief moments in which we did see the Life-esque photographs of the dancers’ mokoed faces, staring back at us with a near-expressionless sadness. The one that struck me most, I think, was Kupono’s, because the dance itself, although it was based in Maori heritage, could have easily been about the same struggle as those of the Native peoples of Hawaii.

If what I just wrote doesn’t make a lot of sense to you, that’s okay, because the producers followed up the Top 18 number with a package on the Tao of C, highlighting Lil C’s particularly verbose rhetoric, and you’re welcome to lump my analysis into the portion of your brain that ignores Lil C if you’re not into that sort of thing.

And so Kupono was separated from his shadow at long last.

After that, it was time to get to results. Cat called up Melissa and Ade, Caitlin and Jason and Phillip and Jeanine. She informed us straight away that Melissa and Ade were safe and that, as I predicted, Chbeeb and Jeanine have already accumulated enough fans to keep themselves out of the bottom three, landing Caitlin and Jason the first two spots in the “Dance for Your Life” solo round. Their presence in the bottom three, however, totally screws up one of my bottom three predictions. So while I may have been a very premium judge of dances last week, this week, I got one measly fucking point in the “EW Predictify SYTYCD” challenge. So, you know, don’t trust me on everything.

Of the next three couples to sweat it out before Cat Deeley, my other favorites from last night Brandon and Jeanette were told they were safe, followed by Jonathan and Karla-of-the-totally-blank-face, leaving Ashley and Kupono in the bottom three, which would be the only predication I actually got right this week.

Finally, Randi and Evan, Auska and Vitolio and Kayla and Max took the stage. Before any results were given, Cat reminded everyone that they’re currently auditioning dancers for fall’s season 6 and showed a clip of Ryan Kasprzak’s audition and subsequent immediate ticket to Vegas, just to make little brother Evan smile. I had been worried about the show losing its momentum going into season 6, but dear sweet Lord, if Ryan Kasprzak makes it to the Top 20 of season 6, I will never, ever, ever stop believing in this show. You give me Ryan Kasprzak followed by Glee on Wednesdays at 9 and I will be deliciously fucking happy.

As for the results themselves, I was happy to hear that Randi and Evan got by this week on the strength of how cute they are (also, did anyone else notice that the recap of this dance made the judges comments seem overall more positive than they actually were on Wednesday?) but then totally and completely shocked to see that Kayla and Max ended up in the bottom three rather than Auska and Vitolio. Granted, Auska and Vitolio were beautiful this week and the only reason I thought they’d be in the bottom three is that I’ve seen a number of commenters out here in the innertubes that spend their whole day hating on Auska. And you must know how totally shocked I am to see Kayla and Max in the bottom too, considering they were one of my top three most premium dances of the night! Dear SYTYCD viewers: please do not hate on Brian the Evil Elf, or I will post the Dmitry and Ashlee Fall Out Boy dance again, just to show you he’s wicked cool. And that’s a threat, because you’d then have to listen to a Fall Out Boy song and actually enjoy it.

So after a performance of some totally difficult (because it has to be perfectly timed to the music) Indian dancing by a lady with tons of little tintinabulating bells tied to her feet, Kayla, Max, Caitlin, Jason, Kupono and Ashley all danced for their lives:

Caitlin danced to “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele, and while I think she looked strong, I didn’t really think much of her solo. I am beginning to realize that I might not like her.

Jason danced to “Superman” by Robin Thicke. Nigel later called this the strongest solo he’d ever seen. Uh, I like Jason a lot, but I’m not sure that’s true.

Ashley danced to “By Your Side” by Coco Kosse. While I appreciate the fact that she dressed up like Marion Cotillard to perform this piece, I don’t understand why she made that choice or why she chose not to really dance while doing so.

Kupono “danced” to “Many Moons” by Janella Monrae (I think?). You know, I like Kupono, but he is no Mark Kanemura. The only reason I’d want him to stay on the show is because I want to hear about his furniture collection, but this solo was a steaming pile of poop. He basically just ran around and occasionally vogued poorly. Benny Ninja would be ashamed!

Kayla danced to “Walking on Air” by Kerli. The girl shouldn’t have been in the bottom three in the first place, but she took the name of her song choice very literally and spent most of this solo physically in the air in a variety of leaps, twirls and mid-air splits. Nigel later said her solo was crowded, and I guess that’s true, but you can’t knock the fact that she did everything she jammed into that solo incredibly well.

Max danced to “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins. Hands down, one of the most violent jive steps I’ve ever seen. Also, I now know that while he’s a great dancer, he totally can’t choreograph. There was a lot of dead space between segments in this solo.

I guess Nigel wasn't that into this outfit, either, eh?

The judges went backstage to deliberate and Krisinia DeBarge of the family DeBarge (whom you should totally check out on Punky Brewster!) showed up to lip-sync (and poorly!) her new single, “Goodbye.” After which the “jidges” announced that they were not unanimous on their decisions and decided to send Ashley packing (goodbye, my vomiting friend!), which wasn’t totally surprising, because Nigel wants to bone Caitlin and it did take Ashley four auditions before the producers finally caved and added her to the Top 20. But then we also had to say goodbye to Max, which I really think was the wrong decision. Yes, Kupono is perhaps a little more interesting in the personality department, but what about the idea of having a well-rounded Top Whatever? Last week, Paris was let go because she was the weakest of the eight contemporary dancers that comprised the Top 20. Why would you axe your only male ballroom dancer so early in the competition, and let an inferior contemporary dancer stay? I think Kayla was even more unhappy than I was at Max’s untimely departure. She’s a very strong dancer, but I am worried about her dancing with Kupono. I think she only benefited from having a great partner like Max who was strong and knew how to partner well – two things I do not think of when I see Kupono, especially after that horrible solo.

So next week, we’ll have a new couple: Kayla and Kupono, which is only promising because of their alliterative names. But I’m worried about Kayla. Please transcend this disaster, Radomkulous! Persevere!
