El objetivo de este portal en su primera etapa, es publicar información general de Puno, destinos turísticos, temas de actualidad, directorios institucionales y enlaces de interés.

Era las 7am. aproximadamente, salimos rapidamente del hotel rumbo al puerto de Puno. Un dia antes tambien habiamos ido ha hacer las averiguaciones correspondientes de como llegar a las islas del lago titicaca porque con algunas personas con las que habiamos conversado nos decian que teniamos que separar un cupo en alguna agencia turistica pero por ahi nos dijeron que solo vayamos al puerto que nos saldria mas barato.

Como queriamos ahorrarnos algunos soles fuimos al puerto donde el tour costaba 30 soles que constaba de 2 dias para visitar la isla de los Uros, la isla de Amantani y la Isla de Taquile. Ahora la gran pregunta fue y donde nos hospedaremos en el medio del lago? que en realidad mas parecia un oceano, felizmente que al comprar el boleto del tour nos indicaron que los pobladores de Amantani daban hospedaje que incluia para el primer dia almuerzo y cena y al dia siguiente un rico desayuno y creanme que asi fue, no era abundante pero si consistente.

Bueno continuo con mi relato.

Salimos en una lancha de dos niveles, el primero era cerrado mientras pero preferimos irnos en la parte de arriba para ver todo el paisaje y tomar algunas fotos y grabar algunos video desde ahi. Ahi conocimos a 2 franceses, 1 mexicano, 1 español y 2 de australia. Lo bueno es que la chica francesa sabia español porque estaba estudiando en Perú por intercambio estudiantil. En este momento no recuerdo bien sus nombres.
Pasaron 30 minutos y llegamos a la Isla de los Uros, donde las casas estan hechas de fibras, en un inicio creia que era una sola isla pero era un conjunto de pequeñas islas, y en cada una había una casa. También había un mirador pero por tonta no me subí. Ahí también venden artesanía y lo que me sorprendió fue ver a una señora bien “grande” y bien oscura,( ya la verán en las fotos), me sorprendió porque era diferente al resto.
Ahi estuvimos aproximadamente de 30 a 40 minutos luego empezó el viaje a las Isla de Amantaní. El viaje duraría aproximadamente 3horas a mas y el frio era insoportable a pesar de que había salido el sol. Lo que atiné es a ver el paisaje y luego me quedé dormida entre bultos y mochilas. aunque no lo crean fue una siesta muy agradable y relajante. Llegamos a Amantaní y subimos por unos pequeños caminos de tierra hacia la parte alta de la isla y fue al bajar de la lancha que a mi amiga y a mi nos llevaron a una casa y al resto a otras.

La estadía no seria muy cara porque fueron 20 soles por persona e incluia comidas.

Llegamos a la casa del señor y eran unas habitaciones sencillas pero cómodas, nos instalamos y fuimos al comedor a almorzar.
Luego fuimos a la plaza que estaba a casi al costado, por donde nos hospedamos había un camino no había nada de cuadras y llegamos a la plaza si siguiendo por un costado fuimos rumbo a Pachatata donde hay un mirador.
La subida es tediosa porque como es altura falta el aire así para hacer más fácil la subida la hice de espaldas. En una parte de la subida que es todo empedrado encontramos una división del camino, ahora vino la incertidumbre porque no sabiamos si ir por la derecha o por la izquierda. Al final fuimos por la derecha y resultó que era el camino más largo ploppp.

Caminamos y caminamos hasta que llegamos a la cima de la isla y nos tomamos un mate de muña para el estomago y para la altura. El paisaje era impresionante porque se podía ver toda la isla y todo el lago y hacia donde uno veía lograbas observar la isla del sol y de la luna que pertenecen a Bolivia, era como dije realmente impresionante. Lo malo que la caminata fue como casi de 1hr o algo más y estuvimos un rato en el mirador y luego tuvimos que bajar porque ya estaba oscureciendo.

Bajamos lo más rápido que pudimos pero al llegar la noche recién habíamos llegado a la plaza, lo malo es que no nos acordabamos donde era la casa del hospedaje y caminamos por el supuesto camino que creíamos pero nos perdimos entre los árboles y la oscuridad, felizmente encontramos a alguien que andaba por ahí. Con temor le preguntamos por la casa del señor ( del que no recuerdo su nombre) y nos dijo que nos llevaría si le dabamos un sol. En ese momento preferí darle el sol en vez de quedarme en medio de la oscuridad porque en nuestros intentos por llegar casi nos metimos en la casa de otra familia.

Así fue como llegamos al hospedaje y el chico que no llevó había sido sobrino del dueño del hospedaje.
Sólo nos quedaba esperar al día siguiente para salir a la muy popular Isla de Taquile.

29.October:
The dad in the house woke us up at 7am. We then had a quick brekkie with the rest of the family. Marita bought the hat she borrowed from the family the day beforefor 25 soles (50 NOK). Then we said goodbye to the whole family and gave them a bag of unpopped popcorn as a going away present:) they thanked us, but looked a bit perplexed, so I had to explain the dad what it was and how to prepare it. Then we left Amantani by boat.

A three hour sunny boat ride later we arrived Puno, where I spontaenously bought a Pan flute with some nice carvings for 10 soles (20 NOK). At this point, the streets of Puno were filled with people in fantastic costumes parading through the city. The university in Puno had a fifteen year anniversary and the people of Puno recognized this event as an excellent opportunity to dress up and parade the streets. The parade went on from 2pm to 8pm!

A bit later that evening three people tried to play a trick on me to pick my pocket! While walking down the street, I suddenly felt a splash of water in my face. As I looked around trying to determine where it came from, two people next to me started pointing at some power wire above my head while babling in Spanish. At the same time as I´m looking in the air somewhat distracted, I feel a hand reaching into my pocket going for myt camera! Luckily I notice straight awaty. I grab the hand and notice that it belongs to a fairly old shady looking guy. I get furious and yell out; ´What the fuck?!´ while I kick the bastard and walk off. If the guy had been younger, he´d be in for a serious beating.

27.October:
ashad breakfast at 8.30am before taking a taxi to the bus station only to find that the bus was delayed. Once the bus arrived, it turned out to be another one than the one we had bought tickets for, but somehow our tickets had been transferred to this lower class local bus. We were definately the only gringos on the bus. 7 hours and an extremely weird movie (displayed on TV with only red and grenn color) later we arrived Puno. Luckily we randomly met a guy representing the hostal which we were aiming to stay spend the night at, next to the toilets at the bus station.

We checked into the hostel (20 Soles), paid for a homestay at Isla Amantino (65 Soles) the following day and paid Ukuku’s (restaurant) a visit for some tender alpakka meat. After dinner we witnessed an amazing dog trick show in a nearby park before we went back to the hostal for a good nights sleep.

Still reeling from a memorable journey to the citadel of Machu Pichu, I left Cusco around 7.30am and arrived late afternoon at the coastal town of Puno. The journey was interesting as today I journeyed through the Andean altiplano. The sun’s intensity is high and everything sparkles at this altitude. There is a narrow patch of land that we travelled between the mountains and it was fascinating. The road climbed gradually and I could sense that we were gaining altitude. Snow peaked mountains came into view. Partway through the journey, at a high pass of 4330m, Abra La Raya, it was interesting to see a small market place had been established. The stalls selling weaved materials, drinks, fruits and more handicrafts. The local artisans are capatilising all avenues for their business. The sun was intense, the air dry and cold wind blowing. A few farming communities survived on this dry and harsh landscape. A train passed through altiplano plains like iron horses from another planet. The animals didn’t blink either. The roads didn’t belong as well.

From a high rim, the road descended into Puno with a 180 degree amphitheater with the other half hugging the coast of Lake Titicaca. It was impressive from the top but as the bus got closer, the town is nothing to shout about. The blue waters of Titicaca looked inviting. The bus operator offered his hostel for the night at US$15. While scouting for more tourist, the price came down to US$12. At Puno, some of us offered, US$5 [15Sol] Guess what, he agreed. I accepted and off we went to Casa del Abuelo on Calle Tarapaca. A decent place – whole room with double bed and attached bath plus towel. Another fact, it is near the nothing to say plaza but is only minutes from the happening place, Calle Lima.

After dusk, the weather turned chilly. I spent most of my time wandering Calle Lima, sorting out a boat trip to Uros and Amantani Islands. The street was lined with restaurants, travel agents, money changers and handicraft shops. A small market place had been established at one end of the street, opposite the church, selling local handicraft – chullo, textiles, CD´s, household items and other things.
I would advice that you get a few quotes on the prices of the various tours. The tour to Amantani Island with an overnight stay including visiting Uros Island, floating Islands, and on the return, stopover at Taquile Island cost me 55Sol. The price ranged up to 125Sol for the same thing! Pays to shop around.

There was a fantastic restaurant just off Calle Lima that did wonderful vegetarian pasta. It was patronised by mostly locals. That made my day. Had a nice hot shower. The hostel was near empty which translated to less noise. I looked forward to a good rest.

Tomorrow I head to some of the islands including Isla Amantani on the highest navigable lake [so they say]. Titicaca.
