Littleton Pets Examiner article from Examiner.com:

Advertisements, commercials and local animal shelters across Colorado emphasize the importance of ‘thinking adoption first.’ With organizations such as the Dumb Friends League, Max Fund and PetSmart Adoptions, it couldn’t be easier to find a new furry family member.

While these options are great for adopting an adult dog, one can’t deny the appeal of owning a puppy. Luckily, you can have the best of both worlds: adopting a dog in need, and enjoying the experience of raising a puppy. Colorado is home to the Colorado Puppy Rescue, an organization that focuses on adopting out shelter puppies in need of a good home.

Based in the Denver metro area, Colorado Puppy Rescuespecializes in gathering puppies from rural shelters and rescuers in Colorado and surrounding states that do not have the funds or manpower to provide proper care for young dogs. Puppies that end up in shelters that are overpopulated or underfunded are often euthanized. It isColorado Puppy Rescue’s mission to prevent unnecessary euthanasia and find loving homes for every single puppy…Read More

Do you know that for as little as $25 anyone can register a whole litter regardless of breed or heal

Do you know that for as little as $25 anyone can register a whole litter regardless of breed or health with the AKC (American Kennel Club)?

The AKC do not travel to the breeding facility to see if the puppies or dogs qualify for registration.

They even announced it cannot guarantee the quality or health of dogs in its registry.

All they really do is thrive on naive people and make $30 million each year!

$30 million! While countless people falls victim of buying sick puppies from cruel and unsanitary puppy mill.

Read here for more info: http://network.bestfriends.org/2967/news.aspx

So if you are looking for a purebred puppies (Are you being superficial or naive ~ breed does not guarantee great personality).

Adopt from breed-specific rescue group.

It’s way cheaper.

These people knows their breed so you are sure to be getting the breed you want, you breedist.

And they treat the pets well so you will not be getting abused and sick animals.

Again if you see people advertising that their pets are AKC registered.

Don’t be fooled!

It’s like used car salesperson boasting that their cars are registered.

Does it guarantee the quality of the car? No.

Does it guarantee the make and model of the car? Not in this case.

Remember EVERYONE can register.

So stay away from breeders.

These guys treat breeding dogs worst than farmers do chicken at chicken farms.

Out of greed and not having to get a real job like the rest of us they continue to breed despite the 4 million puppies and dogs being killed by gas chambers, heart sticks and lethal injections

each year in U.S. pounds because of overpopulation.

And naive people continue to buy thinking that the AKC papers are worth more than tissue papers.

STOP SUPPORTING BREEDERS & AKC!

SUPPORT ANIMALS & LIVES. ADOPT.

Pet accessories are an important part of taking care of your dog. Generally we use accessories to ac

Pet accessories are an important part of taking care of your dog. Generally we use accessories to accentuate the beauty of things. When it comes to pet care accessories are used to protect your pet from harmful elements. You can also gain a lot of satisfaction from buying accessories for you pet. There is a wide variety to choose from and you might wonder where to start, particularly if this is your first pet.

Here are some tips on what to look for when choosing accessories for your pet:

1. Food and water bowls:

The most important thing about choosing good bowls is that they are not easily tipped over. You will probably want to check that especially the water bowl is pretty sturdy. It’s vital that your dog has free access to water at all times and one of the ways people are doing this is by buying large water systems for their pets. Much like human watering systems these will keep your dog with fresh water for longer.

2. Dog Collar:

Whether you want a plain or fancy variety – collars are important and will be an item you use daily. This means the comfort and fit are important. Experts recommend a space between the dog’s neck and the collar to be at least 2 fingers wide. A collar should never be too loose or too tight. Make sure you get a good fit and take your dog along when you buying a collar.

3. Dog leash:

It’s not hard to choose a leash – you just want to keep in mind that it needs to be strong enough to hold your dog. Leashes are often sold clearly marked with the breeds the leash is suitable for.

4. Grooming accessories:

Depending on the kind of breed you have the amount of grooming accessories needed will vary.

If you have a dog that will need relatively little grooming, that is with a short coat, then you will need only a basic toolkit.

You will need
- dog shampoo
- dog clippers
- styptic powder
- dog toothbrush
- dog toothpaste
- dog brush or comb

These are the basics. There are many other products you can use to keep your dog clean and fragrant. If you have a more high maintenance dog you will need these plus a wider variety of brushes and combs to care for your pets coat and grooming needs.

5. Dog houses:

If your dog will be sleeping outside then it’s important that they have their own place for shelter. A dog house will keep your dog out of the harsh sunlight or rain or even snow. When choosing a dog house try to choose the right size. The dog should fit snuggly inside with enough space to move around.

6. Dog beds:

If your dog will be spending time inside it’s also a good idea to buy a dog bed. This gives your dog a ‘retreat’ and they will value having their own comfy space where they can go when cold or sleepy. Again just try to choose the right size. Many dog beds are designed for specific breeds so you won’t have a problem finding a bed for your dog.

7. Dog toys and treats:

Most dogs love playing, and just like children, love being spoilt. It is especially important if you are away for long periods of time that your dog has something to play with. It’s best to give them a variety of toys; this will keep them away from your slippers!

Again the most important thing is the size. Treats and toys should be size appropriate. If the toy is too big they won’t be able to play with it and it won’t be fun for anyone.

There is a wide variety of toys for you dog to chew, play and bite. Spend some time choosing some fun toys for your dog.

These are the most important accessories you will need for your dog. There are many more things you could buy your dog but by catering for the items on this list your dog should have everything he needs to be a healthy, happy dog.

Many of us know or have experienced the demands and affects a pregnancy can place on your body. Lik

Many of us know or have experienced the demands and affects a pregnancy can place on your body. Likewise, a dog that is pregnant or nursing will experience several developmental changes throughout their entire reproduction process. These changes will affect their lifestyle to include their eating habits. When deciding to breed your beloved pet you will want to carefully plan and monitor their pre-pregnancy schedule, their pregnancy term, their nursing regimen, and finally the process of weaning their litter onto solid foods.

Pre-Pregnancy Planning

If you are planning to breed your female dog, it is essential to examine and assess her body and health conditions well in advance and prior to breeding. You will want to prepare your dog to ensure their body is in optimal health and able to carry a litter to term. Proper diet and regular exercise are crucial to the success of a healthy pregnancy. Breeding a female who is in poor health can cause severe and/or fatal consequences for your adult dog and her litter.

Dogs with less than ideal health may not be able to withstand the physical demands of pregnancy and nursing their young. For instance, an underweight dog will likely be unable to consume enough food and nutrients to support herself and her litter. Newborn and developing puppies have several nutritional needs that are vital to their survival, which they receive through nursing. Likewise, an overweight dog may experience difficulties or have an abnormal labor due to an enlarged fetus, which in turn can be quite painful during delivery.

In preparation for breeding be careful to feed your dog a complete well balance diet. This will optimized your dogs’ weight and health condition prior to breeding and increase your dogs chances of a successful pregnancy and lactation.

Pregnancy

A typical gestation period for dogs is nine weeks. During pregnancy dogs gain minimal weight the first six weeks of their pregnancy; however, they will gain weight rapidly in the remaining three weeks of their pregnancy.

During a healthy pregnancy dogs will generally consume twenty-five to fifty percent more of than their normal food intake throughout their pregnancy; however, their energy levels do not increase until approximately the sixth week of pregnancy.

Nursing

Following the birth of your dogs litter you can expect your dog to lose weight; however, their nutritional needs increase dramatically. Food consumption can increase as much as two to three times their normal food requirements depending on the size of their litter. The larger the litter, the greater the demand is for milk. The nursing mother will need to produce enough milk to nourish her litter of puppies. It is extremely important that your nursing mom (dog) has plenty of water supply; this will help generate the milk volume she needs to feed her litter.

Feeding your nursing mom a nutrient dense diet such as puppy food will help generate the nutrients that are essential for her nursing puppies. Supplying your nursing mom with several meals throughout the day or by offering her unlimited access to dry food throughout the day will also increase her puppies nutrimental needs.

Weaning

Following the birth most puppies begin to show interest in their mother’s solid dry dog food by week five. Weaning puppies will gradually begin nursing less and eating more solid foods. Likewise, your nursing mom will begin to eat less as the demand for nursing decreases. Generally, most puppies have completed the weaning process by week eight and are able to maintain a healthy diet on solid foods. Furthermore, their mother will begin to regain a normal energy level and can return to her “Pre-Pregnancy” diet.

Food for the Pregnant Dog

Although, puppy diets are recommended for pregnant and nursing dogs, it is also essential to feed your pregnant and nursing dog a high quality, nutrient dense food that is developed for all stages of life for your pets.

Are you traveling by car, plane, train, bus, or boat? How long will the trip take? Will you be stayi

Are you traveling by car, plane, train, bus, or boat? How long will the trip take? Will you be staying with family or friends, or at a hotel or motel? Is your dog in good health?

These are some of the questions you will need to answer to make your trip safe and fun.

Safety

A crate or harness that attaches to the seat belt should be used for your dog’s safety when traveling. Crates and harnesses are available from most pet supply stores. Be sure to provide plenty of water and a favorite toy to make your dog as comfortable as possible. Also, be sure the crate…

Is large enough to allow the dog to stand, turn and lie down

is secured to the vehicle

is strong, with handles or grips, and free of interior protrusions

has a leak-proof bottom covered with plenty of absorbent material

has ventilation on opposing sides, with exterior rims or knobs to prevent blocked airflow

has a “LIVE ANIMAL” label, arrows upright, with owner’s name, address and phone number

By Car

When traveling by car, be sure to keep your dog comfortable. Bring along a favorite toy to make your dog feel secure.

If it’s hot, open car windows to provide sufficient ventilation. Do not let your dog stick its head out of the window; this may lead to eye or ear injuries. Also, do not let your dog travel in the back of an open pickup truck. Your dog could be injured in an accident.

To help prevent motion sickness in your dog, take several short trips in the car before your journey. Also, feed your dog lightly before the trip, about one-third the normal amount.

By Plane

When traveling by plane, plan to visit your veterinarian before your trip. Certification of health must be provided no more than 10 days before travel. Rabies and vaccination certificates are also required. Your dog should be at least 8 weeks old and weaned.

Airlines make it clear that it is the owner’s responsibility to verify the dog’s health and ability to fly. Ask your veterinarian if it would be best for your dog to be tranquilized for the trip. Also be sure to check the temperature of the flight’s starting point and destination; it may be too hot or too cold to be safe for your dog.

Federal regulations prohibit shipping live animals as excess baggage or cargo if an animal will be exposed to temperatures that are below 45°F or above 85°F for more than four hours during departure, arrival, or while making connections.

Remember that each airline has its own variations on regulations and services. For example, if your crate doesn’t meet its requirements, the airline may not allow you to use it. They may, however, allow your dog in the passenger cabin if your crate or carrier fits under the seat in front of you.

When making your reservations, you must make reservations for your dog. There are restrictions on the number of animals permitted. They are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

By Train, Bus and Boat

If you decide to travel by train, you may be disappointed. Amtrak does not allow pets of any kind, including dogs. (Service dogs are permitted.) Local and commuter trains have their own policies.

Travel by bus may be equally disappointing. Greyhound and other bus companies that travel interstate are not allowed to carry live animals, including dogs. (Service dogs are permitted.) Local bus companies have their own policies.

Federal law (Americans with Disabilities Act) allows equal access to all “Service Dogs” (ie., hearing assistance, mobility assistance, etc.). It is crucial if you are traveling with a service dog to alert the carrier that you are coming with a service dog so that they may accommodate you with special seating, if available. If you travel with a service dog, you need to know those laws and carry a copy of the law with you and the number for the ADA office in the U.S. Department of Justice, (800) 514-0301 (voice) and (800) 514-0383 (TDD). You may come across a gate agent, ticket seller, conductor, etc. who does not know the law.

If you’re taking a cruise, you may be in luck. For example, the QE2 luxury cruiser, which sails from New York to England/France, provides special lodging and free meals for your dog.

Check with the cruise line or ship that you are planning to use for its policies. Smaller ships will usually not be able to accommodate your dog.

Lodging

If you plan to stay at a hotel or motel, be sure to find out in advance if it allows dogs because many do not.

If your dog is allowed to stay at your hotel or motel, respect the privacy of other guests. Keep your dog as quiet as possible.

Beware of leaving your dog unattended. Many dogs bark or destroy property in a strange place.

Prevent any possibility of unwanted messes or an escape. Keep your dog in its crate at night or if you must, leave it in your room alone. Also, ask where you should walk your dog, and be sure to clean up after your dog.

Please remember, for hotels to continue to accept guests with dogs, it is important to respect hotel property, staff and fellow guests.

International

International travel involves much more than interstate travel. Each country has its own rules and regulations.

Many countries have a quarantine period. Check with the embassy or consulate of the country of your destination for details.

Check with the embassy or consulate of the country of your destination for details.

Other Helpful Tips

However you travel, keep these tips in mind:

Make sure your dog has a sturdy leash and collar. The collar should have identification tags, a license and proof of rabies vaccinations. Your home phone number should be on the tags as well.

You may want to consider a permanent form of ID (such as a microchip or tattoo) that can increase the likelihood of reuniting you with your dog if it gets lost far from home.

Carry recent pictures of your dog with you. If you are accidentally separated, these pictures will help local authorities find your dog.

Take the phone number of your veterinarian and any special medication your dog needs. Some dogs can’t adjust to abrupt changes in diet, so pack your dog’s regular food, bowls and a cooler of water.

If you think you might need to board your dog at some point during your travels, be sure to bring your dog’s complete vaccination records.
