The first ten week period of a newborn puppy’s life is the best time to teach a puppy that biting is

The first ten week period of a newborn puppy’s life is the best time to teach a puppy that biting is not acceptable. And training your puppy to avoid an incidence of dog biting is crucial.

This is especially because biting comes naturally to them and it is the easiest form of dog aggression that he can resort to in situations that induce fear, anxiety and aggression. And such training is best done before strong adult teeth take the place of small nibbling ones. Curbing aggressive dog behavior among adult dogs is far more difficult than training puppies.

While training puppies, always remember that physical punishment does not work. Punishment is tantamount to making the dog more resolute in his behavior and in such cases aggression is likely to become a permanent concern.

The approach that you take should clearly indicate to the puppy that you love him but hate the biting habit instead. At the same time you must assume leadership as the dog considers you as part of the pack. Unless he perceives you to be the leader he is likely to let go of aggressive dog behavior easily.

Dogs use their mouth to express themselves. A pup also uses his mouth and his tongue for communication. Encourage licking, although not a compatible dog behavior, by offering treats and praise. Give licking a name so that he remembers the activity the next time. If the puppy uses his teeth on you, make an abrupt startling sound (e.g. OUCH) right in his face. His instincts will tell him that he has to stop. Isolate him for five minutes if you feel that the loud sound did not have an impact. Pick him up after some time and see how he responds now. Continue this till the time you feel that the pup has got the idea of what is acceptable and what not.

By the time the pup is six weeks he should have understood that he can use his mouth on you but only for licking. If you have brought an older puppy, you might have to repeat this for some time since he may need more time to adjust to new faces and the new environment.

Expose the puppy to other dogs and humans. The reactions of other puppies and dogs when bitten are likely to make him understand that he should desist from biting. Exposure to humans will remove fear of strangers.

Training alone does not inhibit dog biting. It is also necessary that all those who interact with the dog adhere to certain norms that restrict dog biting.

Children are prone to unpredictable behaviors. This, more than anything else, puts a dog on his defensive. Keep children away from the puppy till the time you are sure that he is trained. It is pertinent to teach children the manner in which they should approach a puppy or a dog and what specific actions need to be avoided.

* Do not play aggressive or competitive games with the puppy.
* Define the areas that are out of bounds and consistently stick to it.
* Never tap on the head. Instead scratch below the chin.

Biting comes naturally to puppies. In a litter, they play by rolling over and biting each other even before they have developed their teeth. A younger dog can cause more harm with his sharp teeth in spite of the fact that his lower jaw is week. By the time he grows up his teeth may become duller but the strength in his jaws can inflict maximum damage. Teaching young puppies that no teeth can touch human skin or clothes always help in the long term.

For the past 6 years I have been living a lie. I thought that it worked for me, I thought it made sense…but I was wrong, so very wrong.

In 2003 I lost my dog Josie at the young age of 6.5 years old to cancer and decided that I would never have a dog in my life again. My sister has Piper and I thought that was good enough for me, I get to see her when I visit but have none of the responsibility. Perfect, right? No, so very unperfect.

Then, on October 11th, 2009 I decided to browse through the puppy section on Kijiji…oh, so many cute ones to look at! But, just cute, nothing more…*click*…uh oh, there she was, the cutest little face and sooo happy! I picked her up the next day at 9.5 weeks old I was the new owner of a Boston/Beagle puppy who I call Buffy.

At first I was unsure that I made the right choice…I suddenly had to be responsible for her entire world; her eating, bathroom habits, knowledge, play, sleeping, training…omg!

The lie is over. My life is full again! It surprised me when I realized how much I needed her in my life until I had her. She’s fits perfectly into my world.

It’s been almost 2 years since Darby past away. I am starting to feel having another dog again would be great. The happy memories I shared with Darby will be there for ever. You the reader can share those memories with me and Darby. The book is written to celebrate his life and the hope of all rescue dogs.

First I ask my self do you have the time?

The reason I ask this. My animals are more like people than animals. Each have there quility moments or two…. : ) I work from home. So I am here. What if in a year my schedule requires me to leave the house for days … what then. I know the cats hate the fact I leave to go grocery shopping! Let alone away for a couple of days…….

As dog owners I believe we all have a responsibility to help members of the public that are afraid of dogs, not by pushing our dogs at them, but by demonstrating the dog is under control and therefor no threat!

Never dismiss anyone’s fear of dogs, it is real and respect of another’s feelings is the first step to helping them get passed their fear.

I was out with one of my dogs one day near the beach, I stood by the car changing my boots, my dog Teddy, was running round nearby, when someone walked into the car park, Teddy was near the entrance and though not taking any notice of the person was obviously to close for comfort for this person, I saw the scared look and the person freeze, my first instinct was to call out “it’s okay he won’t hurt you” but immediately realised that was irrelevant for this person and instead shouted “down” to Teddy, who hit the deck immediately and I called him to me, once I had him with me I apologised for the scare they had had, and put Teddy on the lead to further reassure them that they were safe.

I knew they were safe with Teddy on or off the lead, but this person did not, I could see the surprise on the persons face and the relaxed look that soon replaced the scared look. Teddy and I did more in that moment he obeyed me than any verbal reassurance from me could ever have done!

Happy Monday all! Who else is TOTALLY stoked for another short work week!?

Yes, that’s what I thought…all of you! I’ve been keepin myself busy at work today getting all sorts of odds n ends wrapped up, which feels GREAT, considering how many projects I was working on over the past two weeks. Ahhhh the joy of not running around like a….well, y’know…

Maybe you read my tweets but I seem to have misplaced my camera, and since I can’t really go another week with no post, I’m going to do my best to sum up the weekend with photos that are not mine, thus the title I know, seriously I SHOULD take up a second job in comedy…har har har.

Friday I got into work, acting all superwoman like, but our MD in the office took one look at me and IMMEDIATELY sent me home. No doubt about it, peeps, I totally had a case of viral conjunctivitis. I stopped off at a rite-aid, picked up one of these, and high tailed it home.

PS, this stuff was a total rip off. $10 bucks and provided NO relief of redness or swelling. HMPH.

So I spent the majority of Friday snoozing on the couch with the pups, emailing “dad” pictures to make him jealous he wasn’t home too…

Yeah, they are TOTALLY spoiled rotten by ‘Mom’

Friday night we headed over the Brent & Ashleys house to begin our Star Wars marathon! We sat & chatted for a bit, having a drink & some snacks-

AGHHHH hubba hubba! LOVED him in the first 2 movies…we won’t talk about my disappointment during the third

So we made it through 2 movies officially, and we were all pretty much down for the count.

Something like that

Saturday morning, rise n shine at the gorgeous hour of 6:30!! Seriously. TJ had his first scrimmage of the season (he coaches 7th grade boys basketball, I KNOW, its adorable) so off he went, and I headed home to feed the pups & run out some of their energy. I drank one of these to try and get rid of my raging wine hangover-

but instead, it just left me feeling queasy & nauseas. UGH. So I numbed my brain with a couple episodes of this:

Ahhhh much better. I was almost feeling like myself again by the time Coach came home with his teams first victory under his belt! We went out to celebrate like so:

Hot wings & Beer. Budlight for him, Shock top for me. Go big or go home, right?! We headed back over the star wars casa to continue on the marathon.

I nursed a couple of these:

Old bottle- no blue mountains!

And for our intermissions during episodes 3 & 4 we had more snacks-

Chili cheese dip- low fat cream cheese, turkey chili & more cheese baked at 400 for 20 minutes. No brainer!

crock pot sloppy joes (I wish all MY pics were this great!! AHEM, I WANT A DSLR, COUGH-COUGH)

And, to get some veggies in, broccoli soup that ash beefed up (ironic, no??) with an entire bag of broccoli. LOVED it.

Fast forward 8 hours later, we finally made it through 3&4. Yeah, we took a lot of breaks. Dinner was FABBBBB FABulous! Homemade Lasagna & garlic bread OMG it was the BEST lasagna I have EVER tasted (sorry mom!!). I seriously didn’t want my piece to ever end. Paired with this red, it was one of the best saturday night dinners EVER!!!! No lie!

Sunday we headed back over for day THREE of the marathon & some football. I know it sounds like I did a LOT of sitting around this weekend, but I am so completely exhausted!

Time to get back to work, its an early day for me…gotta make it to my man’s first official game of the season! Go Lakers!!! Hope your Monday flies by as well!

Until next time folks….!

Before you go and buy. Seek advice… sometimes 2 weeks at a horse camp would be safer and more fun. For the boy and his dog… read Darby’s Story for guidence. This delightful children/family book helps you/the family look at your home life style, the house and the safety concerns of space in the back yard to how close the house is the road.

This is so sad! You must read the article below courtesy of Orlando Sentinel online. Sentinel Staff

This is so sad!

You must read the article below courtesy of Orlando Sentinel online.

Sentinel Staff Writer Willoughby Mariano wrote this week of an uptick in pet thefts:

The customer wanted a companion for her children, so she chose two: 10-week-old male and female Yorkshire terriers, valued at $2,000.

It seemed like an ordinary sale, said Jeremy Mitchell, 46, owner of Best Friends Puppy Boutique at Seminole Towne Center mall. Then four days later, he learned the purchaser closed her prepaid Visa account a day after the transaction and was nowhere to be found.

Mitchell was had. The Yorkies were puppy-napped.

“Stealing anything is bad. But a couple of little puppies like that? It’s horrible,” Mitchell said.

With that transaction, Mitchell’s Yorkies joined what experts think is a growing number of stolen pets. News accounts of the crime are up 30 percent this year, according to the American Kennel Club.

Pets are a tempting target for thieves, especially puppies. They’re small, easy to carry and sell for as much as a nice Louis Vuitton tote. Some warn that as the holiday season approaches, the number of thefts may rise.

“It’s out there, and it’s becoming more and more prevalent,” AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said. State and federal agencies don’t track pet thefts, so news accounts are the only way to tally incidents of the crime, she said.

During the past 12 months in the Orlando area, a woman lifted a $1,300 Pomeranian puppy from an Orlando pet shop by stuffing it into her purse. A $2,000 English bulldog puppy was spirited from an Orlando home in August, along with a flat-screen television and thousands of dollars of jewelry and cash.

A $599 bird was swiped from a Petco in Altamonte Springs last November by a man police suspect of dealing in exotic animals. Iguanas and turtles were stolen this summer from the backyard of an east Orange County reptile dealer.

To read the rest of the artical visit

Hi Everyone…

I had to write Mason’s blog today because he is so cranky and out of sorts with everyone. I am sure it will pass, but you know how he hates change of any kind (unless it is a new food being added to his diet!), and Grandma and Grandpa’s new pug, Cecily, has really put him in a funk. I, however, am beside myself with excitement and cannot wait to meet my new sister friend. I know from Mom that she is a beautiful black pug who has had two litters of puppies and that she was shown a few times. She sounds so sweet and fun that I can hardly wait. I feel sad for her because she has always lived with lots of pugs and has never been the only dog until now. I think Mason and I need to welcome her into our family but Mason is being a brat about it. You know how he was (and still is sometimes) about my coming into his life. He is not a typical pug who likes lots of friends around, sharing his space and playing with him. He can be a real pill about that and just last week he went for me when I was licking Mom’s hand while we were sitting on the couch. He tolerates me up to a point and then he just can’t seem to control himself. I think he needs anger management.

I am really anxious to meet this new pug and I already think we are going to be great friends. Mason just mutters to himself about her. “She’s probably as stupid as Lizzie, She’s probably going to steal all of my food, She’s probably going to sniff my butt and then want to cuddle with me, She probably thinks she’s the boss of Grandma and Grandpa, She’s probably found all of my old hiding places in the woods.” He can go on for hours this way until I want to bite him! Well, I wouldn’t bite him but sometimes I really want to.

So, Cecily, welcome to our family! I will be your friend even if Mason doesn’t want to right away. Be patient and you’ll see…he’ll come around. His bark is much fiercer than his bite. See you Wednesday night!

Your loving sister/cousin/friend,

Lizzie

Even better, the organization is based in south-central Pennsylvania!

Susquehanna Service Dogs is a member of Assistance Dogs International or ADI. Part of ADI’s mission is to “establish and promote standards of excellence in all areas of Assistance Dog acquisition, training and partnership” as well as to “educate the public to the benefits of Assistance Dogs and ADI membership.”

Interested in helping out Susquehanna Service Dogs? Aside from always welcoming monetary support, the group has a wide variety of volunteer needs. Consider helping at their PawsAbilities event each Spring at the PA Farm Show Complex. If puppies are your passion, consider becoming a Puppy Raiser. Helping can also be as simple as donating your used ink and toner cartridges to Cartridges for Canines! I just found out about this program and I’m definitely going to start saving mine!

****** is the name of the Brady Family’s dog, who appeared in many of the early episodes. The original dog used was run over by an automobile and died of his injuries before the fourth episode, but a replacement look-alike (named "******" in real life) was found. This version stayed on until partway through the second season, when he was quietly written out of the series. This paralled the Brady’s Friday night companion show The Partridge Family who’s dog Simone also disappeared that year without an explanation.

If you are an animal lover and haven’t seen Babe you should, I wasn’t too fond of the sequel Babe: Pig in the City but the first one is a classic.
