I make my living in tech PR; A.J. makes his by snoring on our couch. While A.J. likes discovering new small animals to scare when he’s awake, I like finding new web and tech companies to pitch or play with at work. I found one today courtesy of CNET’s Webware called Pet Charts from Purina. While Purina can hardly be considered “new” or even a tech company, they’ve recently launched a very new and techie social news site for pet owners which looks to be a fun if not mindless way to burn some downtime–at work.

Pet Charts – The Definitive Guide to The Best Stuff Online is a site for users to “Discover new and popular Pet stories, videos and photos, then vote for your favorites.” If you’re unfamiliar with a similar site (for everything, not just pets) called Digg, then what Pet Charts does is highlight content the community thinks is good for other users to discover. Think of it as a popularity contest for pet pictures and videos; people upload their shots or movies to the site, and the Pet Chart community of users gets to vote on it. The most popular pics, videos and stories make the front page “top” spots for their categories and are seen by a large audience. Not so popular stuff….not so much. Users can view content specifically for “cats and dogs,” “cats” and “dogs.” I don’t see anything for small animals or birds but then again, I don’t think Purina caters to those markets.
