Dr. Christine Heinz has been chosen as the 2010 Nestle Purina PetCare Award! We are so proud of Dr. Heinz’s accomplishment, as it is a well-deserved recognition for her hard work as a veterinarian.

One American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) member veterinarian is chosen each year in recognition for their outstanding efforts to positively influence the lives of animals and people. This year, Dr. Heinz was nominated by one of her clients. This nomination was supported by two more client essays, telling the stories of their relationships with Dr. Heinz over the past few years.

Dr. Christine Heinz received her DVM degree from the University of Illlinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Before becoming an Illini, Dr. Heinz was a proud Spartan, earning a B.S. in Animal Science and graduating with honors in 2002 from Michigan State University- Go Green!

Christine is a native of suburban Chicago, where her immediate family and most of her extended family still reside. While she greatly misses deep-dish pizza, Christine is very happy to call Indianapolis her home. She lives in the Broad Ripple area, not too far from BRAC, with her husband, Aaron, and their two dogs, Kodie and Staley. Kodie was a blood donor dog at the teaching hospital at Michigan State before Christine was lucky enough to be able to take him home. Staley came from the Indianapolis Humane Society and became a wonderful addition to the family and is a great “brother” to Kodie. Christine loves to be outdoors with Aaron and their dogs, will jump on the chance to do a little downhill skiing, and enjoys cooking and trying different ethnic cuisines.

Dr. Heinz’s philosophy of veterinary care: ” I love talking to people about their pets! I want people to understand what is going on with the health of their pet, so that they can feel secure in the decisions they make regarding their little ones. I think that everyone has a different and unique bond with their pets and it’s my job to treat not only their pets, but also their owners with the care, commitment, and compassion that they deserve.”

Dr. Heinz will be recognized at the AAHA Long Beach 2010 Conference in March 2010. She would like to thank everyone who supports her, and entrusts their pets’ care to her as a veterinarian.

This afternoon I had the honor of joining Brock Fitzgerald for a hard hat tour (I really had to wear one!) of the new Purina Farms Event Center.  Last march I visited the Purina facility and they had just broken ground for the new building.  Today there is a huge difference – the building is almost weather tight, and looks like it should certainly make the planned opening in September of 2010.

Below are a number of shots taken inside the building today.

This is a photo of the main event hall. This is a clear span building with 45,000 square feet of competition space.

This is the upstairs banquet facility.  Glass windows on both sides will give views of both the competition hall and the grooming and preparation area.

This is without a doubt going to be the finest dog show arena in the country.  Brock says that they will be open for business in September of 2010.

House Republican leader has just sent a letter to his fellow lawmakers asking them to become co-sponsors of the ‘Defund ACORN Act,’ which Republicans plan to introduce in the House today. In the letter, Boehner, citing undercover video reports of ACORN workers encouraging illegal activity, says, “It is evident that ACORN is incapable of using federal funds in a manner that is consistent with the law.’ Boehner says ‘immediate action’ should be taken to cut off federal funds to the organization. ‘Simply put, ACORN should not receive another penny of American taxpayers’ money,’ the letter says.”

In fact, Lewis will pay back about $1 million he has received so far out of a $1.5 million annual salary.

‘He will write a check to the company,’ Stickler said, adding that Lewis agreed to the proposal because he felt it was not in the bank’s best interest ‘to get into a dispute with the paymaster.’”

A national survey indicated 84 percent of breast cancer patients with cats found respondents were soothed during their battles with breast cancer and 76 percent found kitty calmed them daily during treatment.”

INTENTIONALLY, I have removed a huge list of email addresses and deleted service providers that SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSTED on Craigslist. It gives no credibility to the information that is provided in this posting and serves no useful purpose.  It is the ONLY modification I have made.

Looks like Purina has not cleaned up its act yet. Some of you may recall the email I sent out on this MONTHS AND MONTHS AGO regarding this issue. It seems that ALL BRANDS of Purina Pet Foods have been killing and sickening pets (Dogs and Cats) for a LONG time, and CONTINUE to do so.

Please check labels on all pet foods you buy. Purina makes DOZENS of brands under different labels – ( Fancy Feast, Friskies, Pro-Plan, Alpo, Nature’s Recipe, Meow Mix, Etc, Etc).

You can find Purina Pet food Brands in ALL supermarkets, and in pet Stores Too!

But in Supermarkets, Purina usually TOTALLY DOMINATES the Pet food shelves (Manufacturers often actually PAY for space on shelves for their products, and Purina seems to buy out all the space on Supermarket Pet Food Shelves).

If any of your animals seems sick in ANY WAY, or lethargic, or have unusual symptoms (like bloody vomit, loss of hair, etc), before you search anywhere else for the cause, CHECK YOUR PETFOOD LABELS. If you find ANY made by Purina, this could be the cause.

The complaints below from pet owners are very upsetting.

I was hoping it was just an isolated incident, but after looking around it appears they have a real problem on their hands! About two months ago I switched from Purina One to Purina Nature’s Recipe. After about three days one of my dogs became very ill, with bloody diarrhea and vomiting. It took a week of feeding him home cooked chicken, rice etc before he recovered. Shortly after that the other two dogs became sick with the same symptoms and I likewise cooked homemade food for a week until their symptoms lessened. I had a feeling it was the dog food and I quit giving them the Nature’s Recipe and have not had a problem since.

This complaint is related to my complaint against Purina One Large Breed Puppy due to the exact same problems. I live in Arizona, and my friend lives in Colorado. We were both feeding Nature’s Recipe puppy. We were talking on the phone about our dogs being sick when we realized, it was the same symptoms. Very watery diarrhea, that shoots far, vomit the same color and smell. These dogs have not been around each other at all, yet all her dogs and all mine were very, very sick. We stopped using it, and then they were fine, until I started them on the second bag of Purina One Large Breed Puppy. It all came back after they were normal. I believe these foods are related, and I plan to confront the company.

I have 4 dogs, of all ages and size. I was feeding Purina One Large Breed puppy, because my older dogs needed to put on some extra weight. I was experiencing some problems with the food Natures Recipe, which is currently owned by Purina as well. They were having severe vomiting and diarrhea, both a greenish color. The diarrhea was so bad it would spray on my walls. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. The vomit, was the same color, and smelled the same. You could not figure out what came out of what end.

I had purchased two bags since I go through it so quickly (natures recipe.) The first bag was fine, but the second one is when all the problems began. I did not keep my receipt or the bag, since I use large air tight containers. I threw it away and switched to the Purina One Large Breed Puppy. I went through one whole bag, with no problems. I purchased my second bag, and like clock work it all started up again, same symptoms as with the natures recipe. Horrified, I had to COOK my dogs food for 3 days, because I had to wait to get more money to buy a whole new brand of dog food. Luckily, I kept the bag this time, expiration date was normal. I began to pour the food back into the bag so that I could get store credit when I noticed something horrible. This air tight container had 2 small white worms in the vet bottom, along with a very smallblack/metallic green beetle. I was shocked. My dogs have been eating bugs?

I will be calling Purina One tomorrow. My little puppy has blood in her feces, and my dogs have been having explosive diarrhea for the last 5 days. This diarrhea is like water, and they strain a lot to go. My dogs look sick in the face, and are very, very ill. I just had to switch them again because of Purina, and I can’t even do a slow switch because of what this food was doing to them. Some bags okay, while others have horrible results. I will never use Purina again.

We have purchased a brand new bag of Purina One (Purina One) Urinary Tract Health Formula for Cats. Upon Feeding this to our cats, and them not wanting to eat, we noticed that there are thousands of live insect larva and cocoon inside of the bag, jumping all around. This is a very dangerous product, as we have heard that other cats have died from this. We have staged a complaint with Purina, very doubt it will go far. We are now returning the food to the store that we purchased it and will never buy that brand again. Our cats have been very sick for days.

I normally feed my 2 cats and 1 kitten Meow Mix, however, the Purina One: Indoor formula was on sale for less than my normal brand. With money being so tight, I went ahead and bought Purina. My mother swears by this brand, and actually thought I was doing an injustice to my babies by feeding them something other than Purina. I wish I had not bought that food. My little kitten died just a week after eating it. She had been lethargic for the last few days, and we planned on taking her to the vet Monday, but she didn’t make it that long. She threw up only once or twice, laid around a bit (but still played some), and then I come home tonight and she’s was just laying there, on the floor, trying to live. She took her last breath, and died in my arms before I could even find a vet that would be open this late and on the weekend. My other two cats seem fine, but I’m throwing out the food, and taking them to the vet ASAP, just to be sure they’re OK. I want to know how the people who run this company can live with themselves,
knowing they have caused so many innocent deaths.

I bought a bag of Purina Cat Chow (Indoor Formula) just over a month ago and began feeding it to my cat. Two weeks ago, he began throwing up every time he ate. I thought it was because he ate all the food at once, and scaled back his portions. Four days ago, I came home to find him stretched out under a table, literally screaming in pain. I rushed him to the emergency vet where we discovered that he had developed a urinary blockage. The more research I have done into the causes and treatment of urinary blockage and crystals, the more people I have discovered used the exact same cat food. I got my cat out of the hospital two days later with a 600 vet bill. He will also have follow-up appointments, increased chance of future urinary tract issues, and likely be on a special diet for the rest of his life.

I had been feeding my dog Purina Pro Plan Sensitive for years. Months ago I noticed he had balding spots on his neck. I thought maybe his collar was rubbing against him and that was the problem, even though he has been wearing a collar for most of his life (he’s ten). His hair on his back was also thinning. My doctor suggested we get his thyroid checked. I moved and was unable to find Purina Pro Plan, so I switched him to Purina One Sensitive. Within a week or so he started vomiting and having diarrhea.

The vet ran a thyroid test-it was borderline low-and other tests and could not find anything wrong, so they gave him meds to treat the symptoms. In two weeks I was back at the vet. They wanted to run a more expensive thyroid test but, I was broke, so I just got the meds to treat his symptoms. I finally realized maybe it was his food and switched brands, and also started to mix it with homemade dog food to cut down on commercial food I was giving him. Since then I have had no more episodes of vomiting and diarrhea and his hair is starting to grow back.

I feel the food my have been too high in selenium. The signs of chronic selenium toxicity are hair loss, vomiting and diarrhea. I don’t know this for a fact but I do know I took my dog off the Purina and he hasn’t been ill since.

With my financial situation tightening (like everyone else) I opted to change my dog from dry Science Diet to dry Purina. My dog ate, but not like he ate before. I mixed in some chicken, but he still didn’t want to eat the food. This went on for about four days and, as I again poured fresh food into the bowl, I noticed what looked like larva, or their little cocoon things. Dug again in the bag and the amount I found was UNBELIEVABLE! I was shocked, angry, and sorry I didn’t “listen” to my dog when he wouldn’t eat.

I took the bag back to PetSmart, and the gentleman there not only promptly gave me credit toward a new bag of Science Diet but, get this – he said, “We get a LOT of returns. They are known to have a problem with that. “HELLO??!! “KNOWN to have a problem…” Why is this stuff still on the market. And, if it’s known to have a problem, why do they still carry it?

To top things off, my neighbor got a new puppy. I hadn’t thought to discuss food with her – the neighbor not the dog – and I noticed her dog’s stomach looked bloated. I mentioned the bloat and my neighbor said she wondered about that too. “My dog doesn’t eat all that much and when she does, she seems to get sick.” A light bulb went off in my head, and I asked what she was feeding her. Sure enough, it was dry PURINA! Immediately asked permission to take it back for her and exchange it for Science Diet. Her dog ate a healthy meal as soon as I got back and within three days, the bloat was gone, and she stopped getting ill.

Bottom line: If your dog isn’t eating properly, has a bloated stomach, gets ill after eating (vomit or diarrhea) CHECK THE FOOD your dogs eat. Dogs don’t get diarrhea from the air. My suggestion, stay away from Purina!

There is a multitude of dog shows happening at any given time, but we were just reading about the Incredible Dog Challenge, an, er, incredible event that recently took place at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Mo.

The Incredible Dog Challenge is a series of televised competitions that showcase “incredible dogs” competing in activities like Freestyle Flying Disc, Agility, Diving, and Head-to-Head 60-Weave Pole racing. The events take place in various places across the country, and culminate with the national finals at Purina’s home-base in Mo. (Great photos from the event here)

Aside from the amazing talent of these dogs (congratulations to all the winners!), the event caught our interest because Purina is not only such a powerhouse in the dog market, but because they are our neighbors! Purina Farms is just a few miles from our manufacturing facility in Missouri, and we’re very much excited about the new Purina Event Center is building to house dog shows.

If you haven’t heard, this new indoor-event center, slated to open in Fall 2010, is one of a kind. The facility will have a 45,000-square-foot main exhibition hall a 13,500-square-foot benching and grooming area (which can also be used for smaller shows and events), handler changing areas, a dog bathing room and a dog water station, a fully-equipped show office, a café, a banquet room with seating for over 350, and a conference room.

We can’t wait to see it and are especially excited that Hodges owner Rick Hodges is heading to Missouri next week where he’ll be treated to a hard-hat tour of the site. It is sure to be quite an experience, so stay tuned for updates! And, as always, we’d love to hear about your incredible dogs and events, whatever their size…

After writing my novel its difficult to return to this sporadic posting-style. As it is for most bloggers, I find my most stimulating topics when I have something to complain about. Things have been rather uneventful lately, but I knew my roommates wouldn’t let me down for long. 

The female with her wholly misguided human American consumer brain has just brought home a new type of dry food for my serving platter. Instead of the usual brown grain chunks, I am now being treated to brightly-colored grain chunks. This feast boasts of scientific blend of chicken, salmon, whole grains, cranberries, carrots, garden greens, and cheeses all in one. I don’t think any food product should boast of such a list of ingredients and unfortunately I’m only a fan of 3 of these foods.

In the words of the male. “I love me some cheese” (they use very awkward grammar sometimes) and I am not opposed to variety in my diet, but I’d prefer this variety wasn’t all blended together and dried up with added food coloring. I don’t see the humans collecting all the elements of a fine dinner and then throwing them in the blender.

At first I wondered why she had brought me this bizarre food but now I can picture the female checking out all the food in the feline grocery section and picking out the item with packaging that reinforced her faux-zen, green, hippie, healthy attitude at the time. When she is in a scientific mood, I get food in blue packaging and when in a playful mood she brings me back yellow-packaged food. Before this brand, the only difference in the food was in the coloring and shapes (I like the scientific shapes the best). But this health food is harsh on the olfactory system. At least, it’s a small bag that will be gone soon. I’ve been making a show of how disgusting it is so she’ll understand that I never want to smell, taste, or see this food again. I think she’s starting to get it.

We’ve done a deal thus far for everyone, with the exception of our babies. So, this deal is for our little button noses…too cute!

Il personale presente distribuirà le targhette personalizzabili per cani e gatti e il materiale informativo sui prodotti Purina. Inoltre i Pet Nutritional Advisor saranno a disposizione dei possessori di cani e gatti per consigliarli circa l’alimentazione dei loro amici a quattro zampe. A tutti verrà consegnata anche una preziosa Guida per la salute e il benessere di cane e gatto, che contiene un buono sconto da spendere all’interno del punto vendita Carrefour.

“A scuola di Petcare”

Sarà allestito un Laboratorio interattivo dedicato ai più piccoli, per insegnare loro come si instaura una relazione corretta con cani e gatti. Il Laboratorio, tenuto da educatori professionisti, vedrà sia momenti di gioco che didattici, con lo scopo di aiutare i bambini a conoscere i nostri amici animali.

Al termine del Laboratorio i partecipanti riceveranno un ‘Diploma di pet care’, che certificherà la conoscenza del mondo degli animali domestici. Verranno approfonditi temi quali: il rapporto tra l’uomo e il pet, l’alimentazione adatta ad ogni tipo di pet e la cura per il benessere del pet.

Alcuni esempi di gioco didattico saranno:

CRUCIANIMALE – cruciverba sul mondo dei pet

TRUCCANIMALE – con i truccatori ogni bambino si trasformerà nel suo animale preferito

PARLANDO CON LA CODA – gioco di movimento in cui i bambini simulano il linguaggio degli animali domestici

MEMORY CURANIMALE – gioco di memoria in cui bisogna associare ogni animale domestico a ciò di cui ha bisogno

I think we all can agree that Lucy has some psychological issues.

You smell like flashbulb.

But on top of those, she also had digestive ones. She puked a lot. I mean A LOT. Like Kate Moss preparing for Fashion Week just with less cocaine. We thought it was because we were giving her people food on occasion, so we stopped. The puking continued. And she wouldn’t even do it in accommodating places like on the linoleum or in the tub–she’d crawl under my bed or let it dribble down the couch. Disgusting, I know. But it wasn’t just that it was nasty and a nuisance to clean up daily: I didn’t want her teeth to rot out and her esophagus to be ruined. Not to mention the fact that obviously she was being deprived of nutrients and as I’m sure we can all attest to: throwing up is the WORST EXPERIENCE IN THE WORLD.

Mom insisted she just ate too fast. This seemed feasible. I made her stop giving the cat wet food and just give her dry; this was not easy! Helen HATED feeding the cat, insisting that in the mornings Lucy would stare at her until she got up to feed her. Omigosh. I mean, that was true, but not such a big deal. But still it took mucho persuasion to get her to stop buying the cans because she thought it would be easier to just feed it to her than to deal with Lucy’s inevitable DTs.

So then I researched about cats vomiting a way-too-big amount and eventually found out that this is evil:

Kitty poison.

Actually, plenty of pets eat this stuff every day and are fine, I’m sure, but I wouldn’t suggesting feeding Purina to your pets. And be careful, they put out a lot of different kinds of pet food with “Purina” in inconspicuous places on the package. Like, we had Friskies, but that’s a Purina product. Basically, the problem with Purina is that the main ingredient is corn. Cats and dogs are not meant to eat corn and a lot of them are actually allergic to it (like Lucy, apparently). Of course, the new food I got her, Iams, has cornmeal as the second ingredient, but meat as the first and third which is really important. Domesticated animals have obviously evolved in their digestive abilities, but it’s the same as with humans–we are overloaded on corn and it’s killing us. Go check the ingredients on basically anything: it’s probably made of corn. But that’s because we can grow it in all 50 states and it’s cheap.

But I don’t really care what you’re eating because you have a choice. Lucy didn’t. But I cured the cat! She doesn’t puke anymore! Mom even says she gained some weight (but I don’t think so).

I know, it’s like we’re best friends. She is to me like Giada De Laurentiis is to my mom in that we really don‘t know each other at all, but the Caggianos are delusional enough to believe it. For reals, though, everything Althie (that’s what she likes her friends to call her) makes is so ethereal. It just makes me really happy and wish I could design/sew; however I have not the talent nor the drive to learn. So instead I live vicariously through Project Runway.

I do, though, have the drive to write again suddenly. I got it a little while back and then it got squished. It’s very frustrating. I miss back in high school when I would “work on my novel” instead of listen to Mr. Brehm explain algebra. I used to write from the back of my notebook to the front. Not backwards, just fill up the back of the last page and flip it the other way to keep going. It made sense back then. Maybe this is what I need to do now. I just need some peace and quiet.

My neighbors are less than this. I believe the woman who lives in the apartment perpendicular to mine has a vermin controlling electronic thing or something like that. It’s supposed to keep mice and shit away, but it just fucks with my head! I don’t know if this means that I am vermin (depressing) or just super sensitive, but I can’t sit in the living room with the door open anymore because it will come on and make my brain try to pop out of the top of my skull. If I start seeing things I hope someone takes me to the doctor. Mom thinks I’m nuts because it does nothing to her. Just further evidence that my father is, in fact, a werewolf. Le sigh…the coyotes were howling to me the other night.

Several weeks ago I made a reference in jest to the idea of appetizers for cats (“Of Irrelevance and Catfood” Spatula In The Wilderness, 8/10/09). The idea kind of intrigues and repulses me at the same time. Curious about the concept, I went to Purina’s Fancy Feast page (http://fancyfeast.com/appetizers). Wow. That is the only thing I can say. I’m not a cat hater. They are entitled to meaningful, happy lives filled with love and nourishing food. This is the site for “cat people,” however. Offers for crystal food dishes and drooling foodie descriptions of the pet products offered abound. The photography is beautiful and betrays the nagging reality that, yes, this is food for cats. Each product is sold in a thickish broth and the offerings include real salmon, tilapia, shrimp with seabass and tuna. Before you get the idea that I’m giving a sales pitch for these products, be assured that I’m not. In an era where Americans are growing heavy and sick from a diet of wheat and corn snack foods and fatty fried meat, cats owners are encouraged to purchase genuine seafood and chicken products for their beloved pets. Right or wrong, there it is.

Several things (well, many, to be sure) bother me about the whole apps for cats idea. The television marketing is strange. Often times we are shown cats in the company of beautiful, ultra slender women with lots of time to excercise and take care of their own bodies. The general idea seems to that the beautiful people have cats and that they can afford to feed them gourmet food. This is brilliant when you consider that cats love nothing more than to carry around creatures that they’ve captured outdoors. There is something in their genetic code that predisposes them to hunt. They don’t need courses during dinner. The other nagging idea that bugs me is the high toned marketing of pet foods in general. There is a certain amount of naivity engineered into the sale of pet products. We are lulled into forgetting that animals are animals and that their food is not designed to be, or made from things, fit for humans. One of the memories I’ll always have etched into my addled mind is of the Summer I was 17. That season I lived across the street from a Purina pet food factory. Each morning I awoke to the most delicious smell of roasting meat wafting through the open bedroom window and rustling the curtains. A beefy smell with the slightest astringent, gamey bottom note. Horses. I won’t belabor that story, but the point is that dogs and cats are fed in a different way than humans and their digestive needs are not ours. I get emotional about the fact that real, working Americans go with out quality food, but seafood and poultry dishes are marketed for pets. Good times.

Food – well, mom  found some Purina stuff called Felix in Nairobi and she has slowly been mixing it with food from the states.  She is trying to trick me…..it is not the same- the shapes are different.

Mom says: I bought  taurine capsules in the states upon advice from the vet as that is a very important ingredient in cat food.  Thus far, everything Finley eats has taurine, however, if we have to resort to pilchards, chicken and fresh meat, I have the taurine to add.  Finley has been eating less and appears to have a better “weight” although I am not sure if it is due to altitude, change in food, the transition of getting here (we have only been in Kenya two weeks, one week at our real home) or whatever.

Today I got $195.75 worth of groceries for $42.38!! I do believe that that is the most I’ve saved in one pop! Like I mentioned in a previous post, we didn’t need a whole lot this week so I got to just grab some odds and ends. I do still need to pick up meats and fruit, but I get those at a local farmer’s market. I’ll still come in under my $75/week goal!
