I look after an ever growing number of linux servers as part of my job, almost all of this I do remotely and with the help of our data centre.

All remote access is by secure keys NOT passwords. I use PuTTY SSH terminal on windows so I wanted to use the same key on my linux desktop with, as it happens, Gnome Terminal. I could have just generated a new key pair on linux but that seemed silly.

First export your PuTTY key using PuTTYGen Conversions option and Export as OpenSSH key. Save the file with a sensible name. This is your PRIVATE key, this is the part you DO NOT give out. If this ever does get out in the wild you need to remove the public key from all servers and build a new key pair. If you don’t have a password/pass-phrase on your key you should add one.

Now copy the exported private key to your linux (or Mac, its exactly the same process) home folder, or where ever.

OK, you now have your private key on your linux desktop (or Mac), you need to set the right file permissions on it, ‘chmod 700 private_key_filename’, if you don’t do this it wont work (and the number of times I’ve missed this part…)

Now you should be able to SSH into your server

ssh -p port -i private_key_filename username@hostname_or_ip_address

-p port — on my servers I run the SSH daemon on a different port to 22, if you use 22 you can omit that part

-i private_key_filename — is your key that you just copied

username — is the username on the server you are connecting to, if its the same as the username on your linux (or Mac) desktop then you can omit it

hostname_or_ip_address — obvious

1. Accedemos a Cydia e instalamos la aplicación MobileTerminal.

A while ago the rather Lovely Teresa blogged a simple humbling idea that I was lucky to be part of which was the idea of paying it forward. Over at Teresa’s blog she asked for people to leave a comment and the first three people would receive such unpredictable gubbins through the post. See, I told you the idea was Lovely didn’t I?

And after my emotional return from Shropshire I found the parcel Teresa had sent me filled with stuff to warm my cockles. I promised I’d blog the gradual ascension of the goods she gave me so without further a do I now have photographs:

Inside of which was a Lovely card:

Polite Demands Were Held Inside

Of which asked of me to share the Lovely things I’d been given and of course I shook my head vigorously (even though there was no one in the house to see). Then to the delights I had in store…

TA DA!

In time for Christmas I have my own dinky Grow Your Own Christmas Tree of which the progression of my mini beast will be well documented on here. Here’s hoping it will not grow too tall. Then some bouncing putty which I LOVE! I’ve bought this as a gift many a-time for other people but never had some to myself. YES! It’s fun, that much I know is true. And then last but not least I have miniature clay of wonderous colours. It’s called Toy Clay but I like to call it MY Toy Clay. I’ve decided that after finding out my impending surgery date for gallbladder extraction is 4th December I will keep this close to hand to while away the quiet time I’ll have to be stuck in bed. Oh right, I know how to recuperate!

So my paying it forward time has arrived. Come one, come all… the first three people to leave a comment (preferably a nice one, I don’t want my happy bubble burst just yet) will get some small Loveliness sent their way. On the condition that, as I have just shown and stuck to, you must spread it on to people too. Share the Lovely things!

Building a Linux server is a fairly simple affair. If you’re anything like me, you had some ol

Building a Linux server is a fairly simple affair. If you’re anything like me, you had some old hardware lying around which you shoved into a cheap case, stuck a copy of Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora/Whatever on it, and bob’s your uncle.

But once it’s up and running, should you dedicate a monitor/keyboard/mouse to a computer you barely use? Or is there another option?

Thankfully, one thing Linux has in spades is Options.

Today I’m going to deal with X11 forwarding over SSH. As you may know, SSH is one of the primary ways of connecting in to your Linux server, but it’s normally used for terminal commands – something some people aren’t all that comfortable with.

X11 forwarding over SSH allows the display of any programs you’d normally run from within a Gnome or KDE session to be displayed remotely, with only a few steps to make it possible.

Requirements.

First up, you’ll need an SSH client for your current machine. If you’re using Windows, the best option in my opinion is PuTTY, as it’s free and easy to use. On Mac, your SSH client comes built in, and is called ssh.

Next, we’ll need an X server. Windows-wise, there are a couple of options such as XWin32 (commercial software) and XMing (freeware). As I’m a cheapskate, I’m going with XMing. Again, Mac users have this preloaded providing you installed X11 when you installed OSX.

Windows Howto.

So, first step. Install PuTTY and fire it up. You should see a window like this:

The Host Name or IP Address field is the important one here. Enter the name or IP address of your Linux computer. Leave the port at 22 (unless you’ve changed the default SSH port), then click on SSH in the tree on the left hand side.

Turn on compression to speed up your connection, and bring Blowfish to the top of the list. Blowfish is still relatively secure, but will be a heck of a lot quicker than AES at passing information as your computer doesn’t have to encrypt things so heavily.

Next, click on X11, and turn on “enable X11 forwarding.” You can also modify the display number if you intend to have multiple machines displaying at once, but I usually leave it as default (display 0).

Finally, let’s go back to the session option at the top of the tree and save our session so we don’t have to type this stuff in every time. I’ll call this connection ‘mycomputer’ and press save down the bottom. Then it’ll appear in the bottom window next time I start PuTTY.

Ok, go ahead and click the Open button in the bottom right corner to connect to your machine. You’ll be greeted with a username/password prompt. Use your standard user login, though – as root logins over any remote connection are a serious no-no.

Good, so we’re now connected via SSH and X11 forwarding is enabled. But we can’t run anything just yet, as we don’t have a local X server to display the information we’re after.

So after installing XMing, I’m going to start it using XLaunch, which can be found in your start menu. There are essentially two main options for us to use. First, we can use multiple windows, which will allow us to run single programs within Windows, kind of like VMWare’s Unity functionality. We’ll try that one first.

The next screen gives us the option to start a client, which essentially we’ve already done with PuTTY. You can select another option, which will use an embedded version of PuTTY to connect to the remote machine transparently and fire off a command, but that’s a howto for another day. For now, we’ll leave it off.

Next up is some advanced stuff about font servers which we won’t worry about at this stage.

And finally the option to save your connection as and .xlaunch file should you want to run it again in the future. Save if you want to, then hit ‘finish’.

Once you do, it’ll disappear and you’ll notice a new X logo in your task tray. This means that the X server is now running and ready to accept commands. Go back to PuTTY and we’ll give it one. In PuTTY, I’ll type ‘firefox &’ – the ampersand breaks the process off and lets it run on its own so we can continue using the terminal.

Holy cow, Batman! Remote Firefox!

So running one program at a time is fine, but what happens if we want a full desktop? First thing we’ll do is close our current XMing session by exiting any open programs, right clicking on the X in the tasktray and selecting ‘exit.’ Then we’ll fire up XLaunch again to select a different X server layout.

I’m going to choose ’single window,’ as I prefer to have remote sessions locked a way somewhat.

Hit next all the way through and press finish. You’ll be greeted with an ugly gray crosshatched window.

That’s what an X server looks like when it’s not rendering anything, so there’s no need to panic. But let’s put something up there to cover the blandness.

Back in PuTTY, type ‘gnome-session &’ if you’re a Gnome user, or ‘kde-session &’ if you’re a KDE person. It’ll send a command off to your other computer that it’s to launch your main desktop environment, and after a moment it’ll display like this.

So that’s the ins and outs of connecting to your Linux machine via a seamless X11 forwarded session.

Mac Howto.

Oh, if you’re a Mac user, I probably should tell you how things are done. It’s pretty difficult, so maybe you should all go grab your security blankey right away.

First, open up a terminal session by browsing to your applications folder, then the utilities folder, and clicking on Terminal.

Type the following command:

ssh your.server.ip.address -XC

The X enables X11 forwarding, and the C enables compression.

Once you log in, all you need to do is fire off some commands like ‘firefox &’ and you’re away. Easy, huh?

Remotely possible?

The last thing I’d like to note is that this option is also quite possible over a remote connection (say, from the office so your boss doesn’t know what you’re browsing). All you need to do is set up some port forwarding on your router and point port 22 at the IP address of your Linux server. Then from the office, fire up PuTTY and enter the public IP address of your internet connection.
Enjoy!

regedit /e  <putty.reg path> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham เช่น

regedit /e c:\\Windows\\Temp\\RegFiles\\PuTTY.reg HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham

More and more I’ve found myself managing linux systems and as a result modifying files using v

More and more I’ve found myself managing linux systems and as a result modifying files using vi. For whatever reason, it really took me a while to wrap my head around vi. Now it seems silly to think back to when I found it confusing. I thought I’d put together a quick vi in two minutes tutorial for anyone who may be having the same issues.

I am typically just opening a file in vi, editing it and saving it. In this post I will just outline the commands needed to do this proccess.

vi /path/to/your_file.txt

This should bring up the contents of the file onto your screen. The next command you’ll want to do is pressing the i button on the keyboard. This will enter you into ‘insert mode’ that will allow you to edit the file.

Press i button

Once you are finished with your edits simply press the escape button.

Press ESC button

Now you’ll just enter the :w command to save the file.

:w

Then you simple enter the :q command to exit and you’re all done.

:q

The only other command I find myself using is :q! which allows you to exit without saving changes.

So there you have it, basic file editing in vi. Things can get a lot more advanced but I’ve found that this is the process I go through 99% percent of the time.

Ok..langsung aja..

<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/ssh/HostPort" value="2222"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/ssh/GuestPort" value="22"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/ssh/Protocol" value="TCP"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/apache/HostPort" value="8888"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/apache/GuestPort" value="80"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/apache/Protocol" value="TCP"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/tomcat/HostPort" value="9090"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/tomcat/GuestPort" value="8080"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/tomcat/Protocol" value="TCP"/>

Linux is like a tepee. It has no Windows, no Gates, and there is an Apache inside

Arrived at 07:30 with about 40 prawns broke my net handle in the process of gathering them last night, chilly northery wind and a bit of a choppy sea.

1st cast was iffy so recast and bang float went under, after a nice little scrap I landed this lovely Bass 1lb 15 oz, my PB was 2 lbs and I was determind to beat it, 2 oz better and I would havebeen a happy bunny!!

Didnt set up the pic the sun just bounced of it lovely!!

Had a couple more casts and all yielded a bite, but headless prawns = Cuttle so I am told, about the 5th cast a Pollock of about 1lb came to me.

Quite chuffed I carried on and still was getting a bite a cast, landed 2 Wrasse best about 2lb, and got grounded by 2 others which took me straight down to the rocks/kelp.

The wind almost instantly swithed to Easterly and no more bites for abut 10 casts, time to move to a more sheltered area.

Had a few casts and caught another Bass of about 1lb 6oz he swallowed the hook and bled out tried to swish him in the water but he was a gonna. One of my aims was to catch more than 1 Bass in a session, so that was now acomplished.

Had a few more casts and the float went under again, I hit it and SNAP, the tip of my rod (5 section Shimano Exage) snapped above the spigot, what felt like a brick started to move!! had a brief struggle and knew Mr Bass was having a play on the end of the line, felt a bit bigger looking to the water with my polaroids on I saw him and he looked a bit better, perhaps bigger than my 2lb target, a friendly chap netted it for me and he weighed in at 3lb 15oz.

Chuffed as F**k!!!! The best days shore fishing for me so far.

New target more than 4 in a session and one over 4lbs, will I achieve this in whats left of 2009, I’ll try!!!

Now if you are planning to get Window 7, you will probably be wanting to do a clean install (and you have to if you aren’t currently running Windows Vista), then I just stumbled onto a service called Volery.
This makes it easy to install programs (although at the moment the only programs are ones I would call ‘essentials’, so browsers, instant messaging, media, imaging, documents, anti-virus, run-times (i.e. flash, java), file-sharing, utilities etc.

All you do is simply click on the relevant boxes, and click “get installer”. Then all you have to do is set up an account, using the demo code: howtogeek with your email, and a password (please for the love of God, tell me you don’t use the password, “password” – if you do, YOU’RE AN IDIOT and you don’t deserve to use the internet).

L'Oreal Paris Studio Overworked - Hair Putty On my way back from a long weekend in the Poconos,

L'Oreal Paris Studio Overworked - Hair Putty

On my way back from a long weekend in the Poconos, where for some crazy reason I decided to get my amazing hair cut, my hair products were confiscated at the airport. As I had to wake up for work in about 10 hours, I had no time to run out and grab some products. Well fast forward four days later, I found myself at Publix grabbing a sub (mmm sub).. when I figured it was time to go grab some products to replace my recent loss. The selection at this particular Publix was pretty sparse, so I grabbed a few items .. one of which I’m testing as we speak.

OVERVIEW:
I’ve been in a kind of natural-but-stylish look mood over the past month, so I’ve found myself using more pomades, pastes, and putties. The product seemed a bit hidden on the shelf, as it had no real branding, or crazy 80’s colors … just a simple, circular-white container about 1″ tall with 1.7oz of product. But hey, I’m not a sucker for gimmicks and bright colors, some of the best stuff I’ve used has been under a dollar. For about $4.00 I figure I’d give it a shot. As I said before the container is no frills; basically all white with a clear twist off cap.

There are two things I instantly noticed when I opened the product: 1. Smell 2. Amount of product in the container. The smell was actually refreshing; no crazy pheromone scent or ridiculous stink like some CREW products, almost a high end salon smell. The amount of product in the container left much to be desired. You would think for such a tiny container they would fill it up almost the full inch, but surprise – imagine a new bag of chips filled up only 1/2 the way. But hey, there is no standard protocol on how much needs to be packaged … if the product is really good I think I can surpass my initial shock.

INITIAL USAGE:
I really didn’t know what to expect as I took a ‘dime-size’ finger full, and rubbed it in my palms. The product feels a bit to silky to be considered a putty, more of a quasi putty-cream. After rubbing it in my hands for about 5 seconds it softened up considerably more. After throwing it in my hair, and styling as I went I wasn’t very impressed. However, after a minute or two of styling and teasing, it became much better and I became happy with the results. I was able to get that freshly towel dried hair look and style my hair as I wanted it. After a few tries of doing some crazy hair doos, I gave up on attempting to use this for anything aside from the textured-semiflat look. I thought I needed a bit more product on the rear of my head, so I took about half a dime size and threw it on .. not a good idea. While the product helped a bit more with how I wanted my hair to look, it really took away from that natural/soft feeling … not terrible, but something to note. Also worth noting, this product didn’t mush my hair together, rather it kept my hair styles original textured look.

POST USAGE:
Well after about 8 hours of wear, I noticed the products original great attributes diminish a bit. My hair was still manageable and pliable, but it didn’t have that initial ’soft-hold’. It kind of just started to fall flat and lose volume, however it still maintained its textured appearance. Overall I’m fairly happy with the product, it kept my hair soft throughout the day and held up pretty well. Additionally I only needed to use a relatively small amount to style my hair.

RATING:

/* evaldisp.c */
#include "stdio.h"
#include "stddef.h"
#include "stdlib.h"
#include "string.h"
int main( int argc, char* argv[] )
{
char buf[512];
char* pc1 = getenv( "SSH_CLIENT" );
char* pc2 = strchr( pc1, ' ' ); /* get end of IP address */
*pc2 = '0'; /* set end of string */
memset( buf, 0, 512 );
sprintf( buf, "DISPLAY=%s:0.0", pc1 ); /* create $DISPLAY string */
*pc2=' '; /* set back to original value*/
printf( "%s\n", buf ); /* return $DISPLAY via stdout */
return EXIT_SUCCESS;
}

#evaldisp.py
import os
s1 = os.getenv("SSH_CLIENT")
l1 = s1.split(' ')
print "DISPLAY=%(ip)s:0.0" % { 'ip':l1[0] }

Ensprechend lautet der Aufruf in “.profile” dann, “export $(python evaldisp.py)“.

~~~Nachtrag:
Und der Vollständigkeit halber, ich wurde darauf hingewiesen, man könne unter Verwendung von awk die Problematik auch in einem Einzeiler in .profile formulieren. Danke für den Hinweis und hier die entsprechende Zeile:
export DISPLAY=$(echo $SSH_CLIENT|awk ‘{print $1 ":0.0"}’)
Cygwin users will absolutely love PuTTYcyg. This lets you use PuTTY as a local cygwin terminal. If you use cygwin on your windows, I’m sure you’ll hate the default MS-DOS looking cygwin window. Using PuTTYcyg, you can run cygwin inside PuTTY. I love this add-on and use it for my cygwin on Windows.
OBA (Oracle Business Accelerator) is a relatively new product from Oracle Corp. It aim to boost up t
OBA (Oracle Business Accelerator) is a relatively new product from Oracle Corp. It aim to boost up the setup process time of Oracle Applications via online questionnaire within a timeframe called Project Work Space (PWS). Once all question is submitted, then you can download the Setup Configuration Tool from Oracle Application that connect directly, wth the authetication system using approved CSI number, etc.
After you download the file, then you must continue the automated setup process. During the setup process, this tool will warn user about setup that need to be fixed, and you can choose to fix or to skip it. This process relatively take some workingdays. Once the automated Setup Configuration Tool is finished, the tools will provide you links about statistics in hours & minutes; what happened during the process; Errorred process; setup that you need to investigate and check again or setup that failed and need manual setup.
One of the error during running the config tool is s_display value in $CONTEXT_FILE doesn’t match the vnc or xmanager display value.
Once corrected, you’ll be told to run AUTOCONFIG and resume the Setup Configuration Tool. This error cannot be skipped as the Setup Config Tool will prompt you the same error message each time you resuming.
I checked inside the context file (Application context file, NOT the Database context file since display should have nothing related with the database). The value of s_display is already correct =[hostname]:1.0 ( Read metalink note 467549.1 ) the hostname is the server’s IP address.
You could do the trick using a broadcast and Xstart (from Xmanager) or from VNCviewer these application type is different from application like putty, WinSCP or secureCRT. Using Putty for example, when you close the window, your session is “over” in the server, but using VNCviewer, eventhough you have shutdown your PC, then if you login again, your server session is still “alive” unless you have issued command such as logout or reboot.
The trick is simple,  using VNC viewer, open a terminal then login using root. type :
$ export DISPLAY=[your_server_hostname]:1.0
$ xhost +
or
$ xclock
if the clock is displayed then you have done right, just shutdown apps services, run autoconfig and resume the Configuration Setup Tool.
note : to detemine your_server_hostname value, just type hostname in the terminal, the result is what should be set as s_display environment variable value in the $CONTEXT_FILE.
SCP is a powerful tool introduced in IOS 12.2(2)T which allows us to securely transfer files to and
SCP is a powerful tool introduced in IOS 12.2(2)T which allows us to securely transfer files to and from our routers. With this feature we can transfer files, images and configurations in an encrypted way, and we can also authenticate accesses on the routers.
It’s easy to deploy, easy to use and Cisco recommends to use it in the Guide to Harden Cisco IOS Devices too: why do not use it?!
It relays on SSH and AAA, so both features have to be enabled on the device:
Router(config)#hostname R1
R1(config)#crypto key generate rsa general-keys modulus 512
The name for the keys will be: R1.mydomain
% The key modulus size is 512 bits
% Generating 512 bit RSA keys, keys will be non-exportable...[OK]
R1(config)#
R1(config)#aaa new-model
R1(config)#aaa authentication login default local
R1(config)#aaa authorization exec default local
In order to use scp to manage configuration we must have an user account with enough privileges to access it:
R1(config)#
R1(config)#username admin privilege 15 secret 0 topsecret
Finally, we can turn the scp server on:
R1(config)#ip scp server enable
On the client side we can use an utility such as pscp, from the PuTTY suite, to interact with our SCP server – the router!
C:\>pscp.exe
PuTTY Secure Copy client
Release 0.59
Usage: pscp [options] [user@]host:source target
       pscp [options] source [/source] [user@]host:target
       pscp [options] -ls [user@]host:filespec
[cut]
For example, we can download the startup-config and put it on a directory:
C:\>pscp.exe admin@192.168.0.42:nvram:startup-config C:\MyConfigs\R1.cfg
admin@192.168.0.42's password:
R1.cfg                    | 0 kB |   0.6 kB/s | ETA: 00:00:00 | 100%
C:\>
Using an integrated AAA system, such as a Radius based AAA with IAS and Active Directory as backend, we can also omit the username part and use our own domain password!
Dear TFTP & Co., it’s time for retirement!
