Ah Wednesdays – mid week, half-way through, quite a friendly name for a day of the week and the day after Grazia pops through my door and gives me some food for thought. Must remember to eat tonight.

As most of you will know, or should know, Brad and Angelina have had another bust-up.

Apparently police were called to their house, and blah blah blah. We have heard it all before – this isn’t what I wanted to talk about on this post.

As I was reading it before I fell asleep last night, for one has to have some down time after researching local procurement in governments, I realised that what made the article weaker, asides from the fact that I wasn’t really that bothered about it was this bit:

“As the pictures showed Brad and Angelina looking noticeably strained and frosty hit news websites, bloggers immediately began to comment. One reader wrote, ‘They clearly don’t want to be there or near each other”, while another remarked, “They are so OVER!! They can’t even stand within 3ft of each other.”

What made this article weak for me was the use of the term bloggers. Apparently it still has negative connotations for me, even though I enjoy blogging. Is this the type of blogging that Richard Tait once mentioned in a lecture – pyjama clothed and ready for action? I think so..

But the fact that magazines such as Grazia are now relying on bloggers to pad out their features is interesting. Are they giving bloggers the credibility that they deserve? Or, are they just being lazy journalists in not seeking out more reliable sources, as Mr Fry suggested when he won his King of Twitter award a couple of weeks ago. If Grazia were able to attribute these comments to for example, a renowned celebrity blog, such as Perez Hilton it would add more weight to the feature, in my opinion.

The fact that these “bloggers” said something somewhere, doesn’t really mean anything apart from it creates a more personal feel to the feature. Perhaps by using bloggers comments, Grazia are trying to integrate themselves further into their readership.

But for me, it feels like we are back in the playground having a little gossip about something we don’t really know, that could have happened to someone, at some point.

Blogs, Twitter and Facebook are absolutely ace at bringing us information, leads and quirky stories that we wouldn’t necessarily find without them, but good sources and good writing are still paramount.

Just for the record, I am not in my pyjamas…yet.

After almost getting a heart attack from excitement over last Wednesday’s match…We are all (normal Egyptian people with sane spirits) waiting for today’s game…we either do it and go for a decent chance at the world cup or blow it!

Yes…it is important…just like a warm time you spend with a friend over coffee and a nice walk to boost your gloomy heart or like a concert of beautiful jazz to refresh the routine in your life… winning a football game among many failures around many aspects of our patriotism does that to the 80 million Egyptian people.

I, for one, learned/ gained some insight from those past days monitoring the feelings and attitudes related to the Algeria battle… Algeria is a rough country and it has rough people…not necessarily bad but they are cruel at many occasions.

Anyway…I wish for a triumph and i wish for some screamingly exciting match…i don’t even mind another happiness heart attack

I’ve been walking around my house (a very small house so you can imagine the kind of walking i do) all day fighting a strange urge to cry…i have many apparent (or hidden) reasons for that…but i don’t want any sa3baneyat now…so…i did everything…i surfed the net…watched a comedy…had lots of love…cooked yummy lunch…still, i feel like crying…so…i lit an essence stick that smelled soooooooooo nice and calming…I’m a bit better…weired ha?!!

What’s with depression and not wanting to change my blue silk pyjamas…it’s like my life depends on it…it’s as if it’s the only thing that fits me…like it’s the only thing i have :S

My mom succeeds at giving it a wash and all whenever i am forced to go out…so…it doesn’t stink or anything but it sort of grew on me…

I confess…It is nice, big and soft…blue and that’s my colour…it has little moons and stars and it encourages peaceful sleep…something i don’t get easily…but…i kinda feel insecure taking it off…maybe I’m not depressed…maybe I’m just in love with my pyjamas…the blue pyjamas daddy bought for me!!!

OK, so it’s late, but hey … Saturday, Friday … what does it matter?!

The weather here has been absolutely atrocious with gale force winds, driving rain and general unpleasantness. I imagine the car boot sale will be cancelled tomorrow morning, which will mean about six weeks since I last went to one – I’m getting withdrawal symptoms! All this bad weather has made my thoughts tunr towards booking holidays for next summer ….

Anyway, talking of holidays (oooh, good segue Caroline!) this week I’m going to show you a couple of things I treated myself to on the plane when we flew to Antigua:

This is a rather lovely eye shadow compact by Bobbi Brown, with some lovely shimmery colours which I used while I was away on holiday. I bought it to replace a Boots No 7 one that I’d had for ages, and dropped on the bathroom floor while packing to go on hols: unfortunately it smashed to smithereens, and took bloody ages to clean up – I’ve still got glittery bits all over the bathroom! I’m doubly pleased with this new compact, as I will actually use all the colours in it – so often when you buy something like this, there are one or two favourites, and the others will never get used.

Next up, I did rather treat myself to this fab pair of Jo Malone perfumes – Grapefruit, and Lime, Basil & Mandarin. You only need a tiny squirt, though, as the aroma is so intense, so they’ll last for ages. I love-love-love the box they came in, too – made to look like a carrier bag – how cute is that!

And lastly for this week, my gorgeous new satiny pyjamas from Matalan (only £10), which have caused Ashley to start calling me Spotty. I love these so much – I wonder if I could get away with wearing them when our friends come over for dinner this evening …?!

Despite previous posts about how much time flancers spend on topshop.com rather than working, barely

Despite previous posts about how much time flancers spend on topshop.com rather than working, barely any of them ever dress themselves properly. Today for example, I am wearing striped pyjama bottoms two-sizes too big, some pink ballet pumps over chunky walking socks, a checked, long-sleeved shirt and a turquoise print scarf (the heating isn’t on yet). I last washed my hair when we had a Conservative government and if you asked me when I last brushed it, you could go and make yourself a souffle whilst I try to remember.

For most flancers, their daily ‘commute’ consists of: bed to coffee machine to desk. Therefore, dressing like you’ve covered yourself in glue and sprinted though a charity shop’s ‘To Be Sorted’ pile is commonplace. I regularly scare postmen requiring a signature, unexpected visitors and myself - if I happen to stumble near a mirror. In short – the flancer’s work wardrobe is the sort of thing that would have Jeff Banks waking in the night screaming and gnashing his teeth.

The other day, a friend called me up for coffee. So desperate was I to go outside where other human beings are, I turned off my laptop, put on a coat and unthinkingly left the house. Halfway through coffee I looked down at myself. I realised I had simply gone through the morning’s non-dressing ritual as per, which is fine for my living room/work space but very not-fine for a vaguely respectable - and more importantly, public – area.

As it happened, I was wearing (a) no bra, (b) my pyjama top and a cardi which I had slept in (c) no socks and (d) jeans that had been on the floor of my room longer than the rug. I could also smell something wierd, which in retrospect was probably my hair. On the plus side, looking this bad means people regularly offer to pay for your coffee. On the minus side, people pull their children away in horror and intimate relationships rapidly degenerate when for the third time that month your partner sees you in your ‘work clothes’ and assume you have a drink problem.

One final note: I watched The September Issue the other night which is about U.S. Vogue Dragon Queen, Anna Wintour. I imagined her working from home in thermals, flip flops and a Hello Kitty nightie with soup stains on it and it made me like her so much more.

I have been contemplating my navel, wondering what it is about sewing that can keep me awake until the wee small hours. Then it came to me…LOVE. I sew because I love it.I love the first seed of an idea…be it searching for a pattern or creating a design from scratch.I love to watch that idea grow and bloom. The sense of satisfaction from completing an item ,whether a small gift or a 70 inch square quilt, is amazing. Even better than this feeling though is when I gift the item to someone special and they LOVE it ! If you are a sewist, you know what I am talking about !

So, welcome to my little blog where I shall share ideas, projects, designs and all I find inspiring in the stitchy, crafty world .

My latest project was born from my frustration at the selection of nightwear when searching for some PJs for my 4 yr old…not to mention the ridiculous price. Everything was polyester, not a scerrick of cotton in sight ! Off I trotted to the nearby Spotlight shop , purchased 2 meters of cotton batiste -total cost= $8. Four hours later ( sounds a long time but I am a newbie to garment sewing ) and I had a shirred night dress and an appliqued PJ set. To top it off-they fit and Missy Moo loved them !

The applique was without Viesofix as I wanted it to remain soft. The edges will fray over time but that is the effect I am wanting. Oh, and I made use of my stash of vintage sewing paraphenalia from my grandmother which provided the pink cotton ric-rac. A fab, cheap project that was useful and cute!

Happy sewing,

Peta.

We’ve all got a major, impending deadline so I’m going to cheat a bit. Here’s a review I wrote for a competition last night about a very good contemporary dance show. There’s a matinee at 1pm today – if you’re a keen net reader you could even get along. Alternatively it’s going to London this Friday (6th). Tell me if it’s worth £100, or just a slap in my pretentious face.

Last night’s homecoming by the newly branded National Dance Company Wales began with a lone figure on a blue-lit stage. A silent woman in a sweeping, sexually charged see-through dress squelched her way across the set, making an awkward din in her bare feet.

The audience could only hold its breath. That first minute held promises for stereotypes among dance fanatics; suited middle-aged ballet junkies watching silently as they stroked their chins.

But the show transformed, and quickly. By its end, Cardiff’s Millennium Centre was in joyous uproar. Red lights flashed and swing jazz was piped overhead as dancers leapt over seats and let off party poppers into a shocked crowd.

“We take the work everywhere, whether it’s Milan or Milford Haven,” said artistic director Ann Sholem. And this seems to have been the point. By demonstrating works by three vastly different choreographers, the show argued even contemporary dance should have a wide appeal.

The solitary dancer from 'Hinterland'

The highlight was Veil of Stars, by Greek choreographer Andonis Foniadaki. Masked figures in homemade-looking sparkly costumes flew across the stage at incredible speed, while stage hands laid on more dry ice and thumping electronic music than a cheap school disco.

The strobe lighting made the dancers a religious cult, and it brainwashed the audience. I was in awe of the dancers’ energy and ability to move as one. The spectacle was not in what we could understand, but in what we could see; and in Foniadaki’s piece, this was hypnotising.

Roy Campbell-Moore’s opener Hinterland did not quite achieve the same freedom. Its themes of loneliness were perhaps too complicated, and risked getting lost in the late Alun Hoddinott’s pre-recorded Welsh Dance Suites. Such an intense work needed the grating reality of a live orchestra to get its point across.

So the most memorable scenes, then, were left for Nigel Charnock’s closer Lunatic. Figures in pyjamas set the scene for a trip into dream-land, where Union Jacks were flung around the stage while a man tiptoed around in black stiletto heels.

It was chaotic, and crucially lacked the unity of the other two. Yet, it was actually fun. And if last night’s show was less about making a statement, and more about seeing if contemporary dance could make an audience laugh out loud – then all I can say is, it worked.

Spent two days with Catherine Kleeli this week. Catherine was running a really great workshop at the Regional Print Centre in Gum Arabic Transfer Printing. It’s a process that allows you to print from photocopies in a process not dissimilar to lithography.

I went down to Carmarthen and visited Oriel Myrddin (see review on a-n), a beautiful gallery and shop, with a great range of books and gifts. It was the last weekend of Edwina Bridgeman’s Orchard exhibition, which I loved. I also went over to the Library across the road, where I saw some interesting local history displays, including a group of printing presses and an old pub sign.

We then went on to Llandeilo. I spent half an hour reading Monocle magazine while in the Toast shop (my companion loves this shop and was trying things on). The magazine is really interesting, beautifully designed and printed on really nice paper. I then had a delicious ice cream from Heavenly round the corner before heading off to the National Trust’s Dinefwr Park. There was an exhibition of Bardic Eisteddfod Chairs, but some labels in the wine cellars, some war issue pyjamas, and a fantastic trench coat particularly took me.

On the return journey, which was horrendous in the dark drizzle, we stopped off at Aberystwyth Arts Centre to catch the Ellie Rees exhibition (see review on a-n), which I really enjoyed.

There will be a day (usually around the three-week mark. Every month.) That the flancer wakes up in

There will be a day (usually around the three-week mark. Every month.) That the flancer wakes up in a cold sweat. And not because they realise they drank a whole bottle of wine to themselves again yesterday. They will sit up in their tousled sheets and realise, with a wave of nausea (not wine-related) that they MIGHT HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ELSE WITH THEIR LIVES. This is considered hitting rock bottom, as joining the Workforce Proper means full, Workforce Proper hours. Without deadline anxiety toast-scoffing.* Without unfettered social networking and television access. Without smoking every half hour. With other people they might hate!

However, on the plus side sits: not becoming borderline agoraphobic, getting dressed before 1.30 in the afternoon, actually having money in the bank without the letters ‘OD’ after them** and finally being able to repay their parents the loan they borrowed in 1995.

Flancers are often accused of being job-shy. This monika often falls from the disapproving lips of a successful, aggressively encouraging parent or live-in partner who does something hideously unnatural, like wear a uniform. But it’s hard for someone who gets to ‘clock off at the same time every day’ to ‘understand how those seemingly less numerous working hours are more than repaid in stress,’ and that‘ you can’t force the creative process you know. I have actually been <thinking> for the last two days about this piece.’ And that it may ‘appear I sleep in ’til eleven but more than likely I was up working till 1 am on a deadline the night before.’ Or ‘Ok, I may be on topshop.com <now>, but I’ll be working 17 hours a day when it all floods in next week’.

It’s all relative. Proper-jobbers may protest to never having actually seen this speculative series of events manifest in reality. But they very easily could. There is always that risk and if those Doubting Thomases didn’t bugger off at the first sign that they’d be covering both halves of the rent again, they would see it. Of course, there are flancers who do shift work and any fellow, self-employed creatives admire this sort of ‘coal-face-esque’ grafting. But as a shifting flancer (or ‘freelance scum’ as staffers call them. To their face of course, as they’d be at home with their feet up watching Trisha in a matter of weeks anyway so why pretend?) the home-shaped light at the end of the office shaped tunnel is always in sight. And you always get paid more than everyone else anyway.

The prospect of giving up working amongst your own personal filth is great wrench for flancers*** , despite the silver lining that brainstorming job alternatives is another excuse to go out and buy stationary and write in it over a cappuccino. And hopefully someone will see you furiously scribbling notes and assume you are a very, high-pressured journalist, as opposed to the reality which is that you are writing out the pros and cons of becoming a vet. The biggest obstacle here is that despite a large chunk of flancers being incredibly talented they can rarely do anything else. Except perhaps become a GP **** given the hours spent Googling their own ailments.

Then comes the epiphany that, even in attempting to flee the money-less, misery-fest of journalism, here they are drinking coffee and writing again! Perhaps this is a sign! They cannot escape what they were born to do! Fighting nature is wrong! And decide to keep on with the glorious struggle, before heading off to the bank to ask for another extension on the overdraft.

*because you are not allowed to be seen eating in media offices. This is law.

** Putting through £350 pounds of coffee and sandwiches as ‘entertaining’ can make accountants suspicious. Believe me.

***just look at any staff journalist’s desk and you will see how much they miss it.

After reading the notice regarding Mallory’s latest blog challenge, I started thinking about what makes for a perfect night in, and no, its not just about having some very cute pyjamas, but also about having some very nice chocolates to eat too. So what better way to show off these adorable pyjamas than to be sat on my favorite pillow from Pillow Talk, that also gives you chocolates

If you are looking for some cool and funky pyjama’s, then look no further than inside the fabulous Rotton Toe store, where you can find these cupcake pyjama’s in various colors for only 20L$. If you cannot decide on which color to go for, then at this very resonable price, why not get them all.

After eating too many lovely chocolates I felt a little ill, so grabbed my cuddly bear and my Kitty Slippers hit the floor to take me to bed. The wonderful Kitty Slippers come as part of an outfit from Kat’s Meow and also at a fantastic price. If you have not been to either Kat’s Meow or Rotton Toe, then go check them out to find some wonderful items. Rotton Toe is especially great at this time of year as it stocks some wierd and wonderful designs perfect for halloween.
