I am always grateful and honored whenever someone asks for my opinion on a matter. On the internet because of this site I am far more social than I am in person, I’m rather shy, awkward and giggly. With clients, teaching, during events I get into some sort of groove and any nerves or tension seem to disappear.

I’d like to share some questions that I have been asked lately. The questions I’ve been asked lately have no been as serious as normal but even so I appreciate that people are taking the time to ask!

<3

Q: Are you planning on raising your children as raw vegans?

A: Technically speaking vegans do not consume any animal products, I completely support breastfeeding. So in a really exact sense no. If/when I have children they will live a compassionate living plant-based foods lifestyle. I do intend to teach them about farming, vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, seeds, animal rights, compassion towards all living creatures, the importance of taking care of our environment and so on.

<3

Q: Is every day the perfect day, do you ever have bad days? I feel like a lot of raw vegans only talk about feeling great all the time.

A: Oh heck ya I have my off-ish days! Eating raw foods does not “solve” everything or put me on cloud nine 24/7. But even if I am having an off day I consider it to just be that. I try not to dwell on it as much, see what lessons I can learn and understand that there is obviously something going on that was meant to happen. It’s all about perspective! I may not like where the winds are going, or how rough they feel but I have control of the sails. I have some of the control.

<3

Q: Do you ever go through phases with vegetables or fruits where you just crave that for a while?

A: YES! Big time, I am the worse with fruits especially when they come in season it’s all I want. I’ve gone through phases before with beet juices, any sort of kale concoction and right now all I’ve been wanting lately is citrus fruits and melons.

<3

Q: What do you do when you have to eat at a “regular” restaurant?

A: Usually I pre-load on food before going out and almost always have some sort of fruit in my purse. But for the sake of answering the question, I would order a salad and ask for extra toppings. I usually have my own dressing, or ask for some lime and or lemon slices to squeeze juice over the greens. At some restaurants they make their own fresh salsa or guacamole that depending on my mood I might ask about. Or I can always pack my own homemade dressing and toppings!

<3

Q: What have you noticed with clients or people who ask for your assistance with food? Like, is there anything they struggle to grasp or not believe?

A: Wow, really great question! So something I have noticed is that people are either aware that the food industry does not have our health on their mind or this is an idea that sounds completely paranoid and unbelievable to people. There does not seem to be a grey area on the matter. Another subject that people either agree with me or do not is about consuming wheat, rice and beans. I personally do not consume them and find these foods to be extremely acidic, difficult to digest and should not be consumed or ones intact should be very small. This idea of foods that are acidic are active in causing illnesses and harm to our body I think it was really surprises people. We are brought up believe these foods are great for our heart, the fiber is essential for our body and so on. This is all just a marketing platform, the same nutrition facts that are on boxes are made-up by a marketing group. There aren’t a group of doctors, nurses or nutritionists coming up with these “facts.”

<3

Thank you for taking the time to stop by my site! I would like to send a huge thank you to everyone who sends or asks me questions. This is a fantastic way to help others too, every question is an awesome question. Much love <3 and raw power

But, for the past week I have noticed she has a sour milk smell to her breath. It is not unbearable but it is there. The weird thing is she does not drink milk but gets calcium other ways through yogurt and cheeses.

I looked up causes and I see a lot of reflux responses but she does not have reflux issues only has the bad breath symptom.

Is this normal? Does anyone else’s child have bad breath?

This wasn’t so much a question that was submitted as a search someone made, namely, when should a clicker be introduced to an Olympic Recurve archer?

I have some fairly strong opinions on this, but others do as well. I will explain mine.

I think beginners should shoot barebow until they have fairly consistent form. Then, if they want to shoot a clicker, or I think they are ready, we do a test. It goes like this: the student draws on target and settles in. When their arrow stops moving (back, only back; if it saws back and forth, they aren’t ready) I put a dot opposite their rest hole/plunger with a suitable marking pen (silver Sharpie, whatever). Then they let down. I ask them to relax, take a breath and we repeat. This is done 5-6 times resulting in 5-6 dots on the arrow shaft. I then show the student the shaft. What I want to see is the farthest dots no more than a half inch apart. If they are more than an inch apart, the student is not ready for a clicker. Between the half inch spread and one inch spread, it is your call. If the student is in a rush to be a champion, I’d make him wait. If the student is diligent, patient, and hard working I’d tend to go ahead with the clicker.

“I have some fairly strong opinions on this, but others do as well.
I will explain mine.”

This is obviously a test for draw length consistency. I do not want to introduce a clicker until an archer has a fair degree of form consistency because if that is lacking, trying to learn a clicker will be very frustrating. If you know any clicker stories, I will bet dollars to donuts they center on the frustration of using the danged thing.

Next a good starting point for the position of the clicker needs to be selected. And an excellent place to put the clicker is where the arrow point is when the spread of dots on that shaft is centered on the plunger. Voila! Adjustments, of course, will need to be made but you already have a good starting point

The situation I am trying to avoid is a student with a one inch or longer spread in arrow point location, because about one sixth of the time, the clicker works as we want it to, but one half of the time the student pulls right through the clicker on the way to anchor and another one third of the time, the student is so short at anchor that they can’t get through the clicker at all and have to let down.

I want them to practice succeeding using the clicker and five failures out of six tries is not good practice. And the frustration can deter an otherwise eager archer.

This works for kids, adults, everybody and I recommend it to you.

A friend and fellow coach Tammy Besser asked for some advice on teaching the finger release. She commented on one young man who was shooting a compound bow with “fingers” and was a real “plucker.” Once she tried to correct him when he plucked wildly and his response was “But I hit the bulls-eye.”

This is a not uncommon problem. It is exacerbated in this case and many others by the fact that the young archer will receive advice from all and sundry, much of it being conflicting. I fervently wish that all well-meaning archers when tempted to give unsolicited advice to either refrain or ask “Do you have a coach?” first. Since I do not believe in miracles, we teach our students what to do when they receive unsolicited advice. We teach them to say “Gee, thanks, Mister/Ma’am, I’ll tell my coach the next time I see him/her.” This phrase is magical. It gets the youngster off of the hook in that they don’t have to immediately take the advice of a senior, and it satisfies the advice giver, possibly because somebody is working to help the young archer.

Back to the issue at hand: how to teach the release to youngsters. Here is what I recommend.

“I fervently wish that all well-meaning archers when tempted to
give unsolicited advice to either refrain or ask ‘Do you have a coach?’ first.”

When working on the release:

Don’t Work on the Release Yep, don’t even mention it. Work needs to be done on what will result in a good release, namely good alignment and relaxed hands. So, is their elbow in line? If not, how can they get it in line? That needs work. A “flying elbow” guarantees a pluck, while an elbow “at or past line” almost cannot result in a pluck. You can try asking them to rotate their elbow back around at full draw and you will touch it as a signal that they can release the arrow. Getting them to focus on the elbow will result in progress. Focusing on the release almost never does, because it creates an urge to “do something” with the release hand which is not what is needed. What is needed is the relaxation of the muscles in the forearm that are creating the finger hook. You can’t address that intellectually with a young archer, so you have to get them into a position where a good release will happen automatically.

Develop Their Awareness Young archers tend to focus on all of the wrong things. (How could they know what the right things to focus on are?) Typically when they release an arrow they are focused on where that arrow lands. (All beginners shoot arrows to find out where they will land. Experts know where they will land once shot.) But archers need to develop the awareness to know, for example, where their string hand ends up after the shot (and bow arm, too). If they learn to recognize when their string hand ends up in a wrong position, they will realize that they made a mistake (probably an alignment one) they need to correct. This requires a great deal of reinforcement in the form of questions: Where did your release hand end up? Did you notice where your release hand was at the end? etc.

Take the Target Face Down! Beginners think a good shot is one that goes into the center of the target face. When working on any part of their shot, they need to shoot “blank bale.” The target gives feedback that cannot be ignored (not by them, not by you, not by me), it must be removed. Then the young archer has to evaluate what a good shot is without an arrow score. This will move them into developing their body awareness.

There are more advance techniques, but those probably aren’t appropriate for beginners.

Tammy, I hope this helps!

Answer: Most child welfare agencies make every attempt to find permanency for children within their own city and state. The CASA volunteer can also be instrumental in advocating that a child stay close to their home of origin. Arizona CPS is currently involved in a project initiated by the Annie E. Casey Foundation called “Family to Family,” which concentrates efforts to keep children in their local geographic areas and schools, thereby keeping them connected to the important people and relationships in their lives. This requires a major effort to locate more foster homes in all areas. The Family to Family concept involves other major components as well. More information can be found at the Annie E. Casey website: www.aecf.org, under “Major Initiatives.”

If a parent relinquishes their right to a child during the court process, do they (the parent) then become off the hook financially? Can the other parent or foster parent or other family member receive child support from the initial parent?

Answer: Termination of a parent’s rights does not terminate their duty of support. That duty of support is only terminated the date that child is legally adopted by another. Other relatives or foster parents who are caring for the child will receive funds from CPS/the state, since they are fulfilling the role of parent when a child is in the system.

Australia is a lucky country that has a lucky culture. And if you don’t believe that look at the photo to the left: (From left: former Prime Minister John Howard, author and chief opinion editor of The Australian, Nick Cater, Caitlin O’Sullivan, columnist Janet Albrechtsen, former Liberal Party powerbroker Michael Kroger, and 7.30 Presenter Leigh Sales. Photo by John Feder: The Australian).
Politics, power and journalism, and not a latte-sipping leftie in sight. There weren’t many at the function, unless you count me, and I drink instant coffee and the occasional flat white. The launch last week saw a good roll-up of journos, politicians and business people, including Niki Savva, Arthur Sinodinos, Warren Brown, Rebecca Weisser (Nick’s partner), Troy Bramston, Paul Kelly, Malcolm Colless, Brian Toohey, Gerard and Anne Henderson, Peter Coleman and Judith Sloan, to name just a dozen of the 150 or so who were at the Art Gallery of NSW.
Shona Martyn, publishing director at HarperCollins Australia, called the book a “barbecue stopper,” said it was already on the best seller lists, and Rupert Murdoch loved it. She said he asked her to send a box of copies to New York, and read a statement from the Chairman of News Corp: “The Lucky Culture is a great book and particularly relevant as it comes in a moment of high political excitement. I particularly loved Nick Cater′s passion for the great Australian dream. It is the first step in restoring that dream.” http://bit.ly/19gEFnQ
Whew, when your boss says something like that about your book, all your Christmases come at once. Then to add to that warm glow, the publisher hands over to a former prime minister, John Howard, who says Murdoch gave him a copy to read, and launches The Lucky Culture by saying it is “a very, very important book. It’s well written and an easy read.” (Before I go any further, I have to disclose Nick Cater is a long-time mate of mine, and I helped get him a job in Australia by introducing him to another friend, then editor-in-chief of a News Limited newspaper.)
Mr Howard agrees with Cater that human rights is a “debased currency,” courtesy of the new ruling class, and a “morally snobbish intellectual” one as well. The former PM also said: “Despite their very best endeavours, human rights practitioners have failed to unearth convincing evidence of institutionalised discrimination in any layer of public life in Australia.” Well, I could have said but was too polite to interject, that the Coalition failed to unearth convincing evidence of weapons of mass destruction in any layer of Iraq either.
He went on to say: “Human rights and issues reduced to simple claims of anti-discrimination have become a new weapon with which to bludgeon people in this country, whether they’re in public life or otherwise, who dissent from the new elite’s view of what is morally acceptable. You see it emerging in debates surrounding issues such as same sex-marriage … such as border protection. How can you possibly be in favour of this because it goes against human rights.”
HOWARD: BORDER PROTECTION THE GREATEST POLICY FAILURE
So it’s not surprising that John Howard considers border protection “the greatest policy failure of this government by a country mile.” He also had a go at politicians who never had any job outside politics, comparing the Chifley and Menzies governments where soldiers, farmers, barristers, accountants and the like dominated the Cabinet. He praised Cater for bringing together the strands of the story of the ruling class and exposing “a morally superior, dismissive, sneering group in Australia.”
It’s a book that’s attracting acclaim from many conservatives. The Opposition Leader and the growing favourite for Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, reviewed The Lucky Culture in the Spectator Australia and called it a “beautifully written and perceptive book” and a “personal reflection by a refugee from Thatcherism, now a born-again conservative …” http://bit.ly/12okcfQ
Mr Abbott says Cater sees “a powerful new commentariat, dominant in the media, academic and public administration, that is every bit as condescending as the aristocracy he left behind in Britain. In contemporary Australia, the worst snobbery is not directed towards people of lower status, he says, but towards people of different opinions. He thinks that this ‘my opinion must be better than yours’ conceit is putting at risk the egalitarianism that’s at the heart of Australians’ sense of self.”
But the Opposition Leader doesn’t agree that a new ruling class has been created: “Happily, the book’s subtitle, ‘The Rise of an Australian Ruling Class’ is not entirely substantiated. Cater correctly identifies the cultural self-doubt verging on self-loathing that permeates much of our media and higher education. As he clearly demonstrates, though, most Australians are cheerfully resistant to these national and civilisational neuroses.”

But if you only have time to read one review before you decide to buy this book, I recommend Peter Craven’s superb critique of The Lucky Culture in the latest Weekend Australian (May 11-12). The founding editor of the Quarterly Essay is one of the best critics in Australia, and very readable. Witness this summary of Cater’s book: “The Lucky Culture is a vigorous, impassioned and polemical work, full of enthusiasms and discontents, by a man who as one of the editors of The Australian has always seemed to stand for the breadth of the national daily, not its firebrand side. That said, the book is a conservative forensic attack on that fraction of Australian society – the latte-sipping inner-urban wankers – that its author thinks is white-anting the commonwealth. It is a fascinating and red-blooded articulation – more particularly if you happen to be, as I am, a left-liberal-leaning parasite of the crumbling terrace belt – of how the other lot think or feel (or think they feel; it can get confusing with the likable Cater) about the irritating enemy.” http://bit.ly/17WeeVE
Craven says Cater gets some things wrong, for example, calling historian Manning Clark a Marxist. He “was a left liberal; he did write a sentimental book about the Soviet Union and he did have a close relationship with a communist defector. But a Marxist, nothing like.”
He is also critical of the author for being so scathing about the educated. “They are a ‘self-appointed elite’ who assume some citizens who are educated are smarter than the rest and ‘therefore their opinion should carry greater weight.’ The upshot is a ‘hubris’ where education becomes “a commodity purchased for the purpose of self-advancement’ and that this makes ‘the educationally credentialled citizen entitled to look down on the educationally deprived.’ … Of course it may be true that a politician who has not been to university – a Winston Churchill, say, or a Paul Keating – may be better endowed to lead a country, than one who has, just as a degree-less Gideon Haigh or a Robert Hughes may write better journalism. But for heaven’s sake, education does not therefore cease to have value, often of a definitive kind.”
I could not agree more. And I wholeheartedly endorse Peter Craven’s conclusion that “anyone who cares about Australian society will want to buy The Lucky Culture to argue through the vision of Australia it projects.”
NOT ALL SHARE HIS VISION
There are those who do not like Cater’s vision: Bob Ellis, for instance. The author, playwright and former ALP speechwriter thinks the book should be pulped. This is part of his rant on his blog, Table Talk: “I have just seen Nick Cater on Q & A and am inclined to sue him … and to ask his publishers to pulp it pending discussions with me on how it should be rewritten. What a loathesome (sic) shallow Murdochist piece of Pommy filth he is entirely. “ http://bit.ly/14gPW6z
And Nick Cater had a torrid time on that particular episode of Q & A on April 29. Here’s a sample:

TONY JONES: And just to bring you really to the point of the question there, I mean, is it your contention that if you go through university and come out the other side as a conservative that you are not part of the pernicious new elite that you are talking about?

NICK CATER: No. Let me say quite clearly that’s absolutely not what I am saying, Tony. I don’t know whether you had a chance to read the book at length…

TONY JONES: I did. I am not recommending it but I did read it.

NICK CATER: It is…

JAMIE BRIGGS: That’s only because you’re not allowed to.

TONY JONES: We’re not allowed to recommend books, as you know.

NICK CATER: You’re not allowed to recommend books.

TONY JONES: It would be a commercial. http://bit.ly/11y7U85

Nick Cater loves Australia. Ever since I’ve known him as a researcher/producer in the Seven Network London bureau in the early eighties, he’s wanted to come Down Under. It’s not a crime to be successful as a foreign correspondent in Asia, the editor-in-chief of The Weekend Australian, the chief opinion editor of The Australian, and now a best-selling author. He might be suffering from Tall Poppy Syndrome, following the reaction from some of the left. I don’t agree with everything he’s written, but he wants to start a debate because Australia thrives on discussion. “In that spirit,” he writes, “I do not expect everyone to agree with everything I have to say, and I sincerely hope that vigorous debate will ensure. I hope the discussion will continue on my website – luckyculture.com.au – where correspondence will be gladly entered into and clarifications noted.”
I came to Australia on a free trip and to get as far away from Richard Nixon and Vietnam as I could, and I fell in love with the country and its egalitarian culture. It just so happens we had the same culture in my hometown, Philadelphia. Many times I have said, and heard it said of me: “You can take the boy out of West Philly, but you can’t take the West Philly out of the boy.”
A few years ago, I was a passenger in a Sydney taxi – in the front seat, of course – when the driver, who was a middle-aged Chinese man, nearly ran into another car, trying to avoid hitting a vehicle that stopped suddenly. The driver made a gesture of apology to the young, trendily dressed bloke in a late model convertible, who shouted angrily as he drove alongside: “What do you know. You’re just a taxi driver. That’s all you can do. You’re nothing.” This led me to respond with some good old-fashioned West Philly swearing, saying the driver was making an honest living, and worth ten of you. This young bloke, a member of the sneering class, was left speechless, never expecting such a thunderous response.
The driver and I shook hands as I got out of the taxi at my destination. “Thank you,” he said. “The pleasure was all mine,” I said. It was.
I am allowed to recommend books. This one is worth reading.

Amy left this note for me on Facebook:

“I was just curious if you had any tips or blogs or any help on nutrition for running a marathon! I ran my first Marathon about a week and a half ago. It did not go to well, I got really dehydrated and hit the wall fast, after that ! 17-23 turned into the death zone! Anyway I did train but my stomach is just not that good and cramps a lot! So it is hard for me to drink a lot and eat much of anything while I run! Also I lost weight training which is okay but I do not want to lose weight again! I am going to start my training up again in June for the Chicago Marathon. I would just like to feel good while I run and I know the key to this is nutrition! Distance wise I felt I was prepared! I am pretty sure I did not eat enough food before, looking back now! So if you have any pointers, info, book whatever I would love to hear it!! If it matters I do not run to fast but would love to pick it up for next Marathon! However not feeling like death would be great !!”

Amy, you are not alone! When I first started running marathons, I didn’t even like to drink on the run. The idea of drinking 4-6 ounces of every 2 miles seemed crazy. That is one of the reasons that I had trouble starting at about mile 17 on my first marathon as well.

Marathon Nutrition is a tricky thing. For most of us, our bodies will begin to run out of resources somewhere between mile 15 and mile 17 if we are not careful before and during a marathon. I will split the nutrition advice into three stages: training, tapering, & race day.

Nutrition During Training

Before I get specific about foods and supplements, let me make one comment about weight loss. Marathon training means an increase in weekly mileage and a gradual increase in the distance of your weekly long run. As your mileage increases, your need for nutrition increases. As a result, marathon training is not very compatible with weight loss. You need more carbs during marathon training, not fewer.

As for the specific foods to eat to maximize the benefits of your training, the answer is simple: eat healthy. Instead of cutting back on food to get healthy, you should be changing the kind of food that you eat. As with any time, you need a balanced diet. You also need to eat less and less processed foods while increasing the amount of simple natural foods. Dietician Cassie is always talking about striking a balance at each meal with PFC: protein, fat, and carbohydrates. In marathon training, it is still ideal to balance these three, with an increased emphasis on carbs. While carbs are the focus in the last days of the taper, you must keep eating healthy fat and a good amount of protein at each meal. Here is my blog post about protein for runners.

Some folks, including me, need a little extra help from supplements during marathon training. I need extra the electrolytes offered through capsules, tablets, drinks, & powders. I mostly stick with Endurolytes Capsules from Hammer Nutrition. Each electrolyte supplement has different directions to follow. Personally, I need more than the average person. I know that I need more electrolytes when my leg muscles are twitching a little bit while I am relaxing after my workout. Finding your electrolyte balance during training & especially on your long runs can save a great deal of pain and cramping during the marathon!

Nutrition During the Taper

The taper is usually about two weeks of gradually lowering your mileage and effort as you approach the marathon. Nutrition for most of the taper period is no different from during the rest of training. It is normal and healthy to gain a few pounds, especially during the last week before the marathon. Your body knows what is coming and is storing energy, electrolytes, and water. This weight gain is good. You will use it all during the marathon, I promise!

In the last 48 hours before the marathon, you will no longer stick to the protein/carb/fat balance that you normally consume. You will gradually reduce your intake of protein and fat while increasing your healthy carbohydrates. You also want to shift towards carbohydrate sources that have less fiber.

Jeff Galloway makes the following suggestions:

Rules:
1. Don’t try anything new.
2. Go through the same schedule and foods that worked for you in training.
3. If you hear sloshing in your stomach, you don’t have to drink for the next 30 minutes.

24 hours and before: Plenty of liquids all day long, especially electrolyte fluids. Before marathons you can eat extra carbohydrates.

18 hours before race: Start eating small meals, every 2-3 hours. Keep drinking fluids. After lunch, cut out red meat, fried foods, dairy products, fats, nuts, and roughage.

12 hours before race: Don’t overeat. Only light, digestible foods like energy bars, bread, small sandwiches, which you’ve tried before long runs and races. Keep drinking water and electrolyte fluids. Avoid salty foods.

Nutrition on Race Day

Before a marathon, you need to have a substantial number of calories in the morning. One expert suggests consuming enough easy-to-digest carbs to provide 200 calories for each hour you are awake before the race. Keep it simple. Avoid fat of any kind on race morning. Whatever you eat that morning, get it in your body about 3 hours before the start. As the start approaches, shift to your race fuel. (gels, sports drink, …)

Water mostly, with some electrolyte fluid, in small, regular amounts. Cold water is absorbed quicker. I recommend 6 oz. every hour, 8 oz. on hot days. If you want Vitamin C, take it two hours or more before the race.

DURING the marathon is even more complicated. For a half marathon, most just need one or two gel packets to make it through. There are mathematical formulas involved in the calculations for marathons and other races longer than the half marathon. At 160 pounds, I know I personally have to consume around 1,100 calories through gels and sports drinks along the marathon route in order to avoid running out of energy.

Here is what Lucia Mahoney from FitBodyNutrition says about fueling during the marathon:

under “normal” conditions, the average runner needs 16-32 fluid ounces per hour of exercise. For best absorption, drink 1/2-1 cup of fluid every 15-20 minutes. You will require more on very hot or humid days.

for every pound you lose on a run, 2 cups of water are required to replace.

1 pound of sweat = loss of 500 mg sodium (the equivalent of 1/4 tsp of salt)

dehydration will increase body temperature, reduce blood volume and thereby weaken muscular endurance and strength. Result —-> you slow down

your gel or sports drink should include electrolytes; studies show that ingesting electrolytes (remember: sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium) during the run will improve performance and help delay fatigue. Electrolytes are important for muscular contraction and for optimal absorption & retention of fluids

**how much do you need?** Carb intake during prolonged exercise should be approximately .5-1.0 grams per kilogram of body weight per hour. A 165 lb (or 75 kg) athlete would therefore need 37.5-75 grams per hour. That is equivalent to 2-3 gels or 1-2 gels plus 8-20 ounces of sports drink per hour (most gels contain 20-25 grams of carbs and sports drinks contain 12-14 grams/8 oz)

important: each gel must be taken with 8-10 ounces of water (not sports drink) to promote absorption and avoid gastrointestinal distress

Remember This:

Start your eating and drinking within the first mile or two.
If you start your fuel and water intake after 2 miles,
you may have already ruined your marathon.

Be careful to consume enough of everything your body needs to succeed at the task that you are asking it to accomplish.

Train hard, eat well, & enjoy the run!

Crystals for the day: Bastnaesite & Sodalite. Venus and Uranus in a square will produce an atmosphere that is unstable, impulsive, restless, and rebellious. Be prepared! Try not to let things shake you. Think of it like a snow globe: it is fine just standing still, but it needs a few shakes to make it spectacular.
