The first eight schools I visited were in Shanghai, and I compiled some of my findings for a friend at the link below. I also have information about lodging and regular semester courses, but the friend for whom I created this map didn’t need that. If you do, or you want to know what’s available in Nanjing, Qingdao, or Tianjin, just leave a comment and I’ll help however I can.

Tomorrow I return to Shanghai to complete this 2000-mile circuit that began and ended in Shanghai, with stops in Nanjing, Hefei, Tianjin, Beijing, and Qingdao. Here are a few observations about China that I didn’t want to forget:

New Drivers: Think high school parking lot. One out of every six drivers is in his first year, and one out of three is in his first or second year. Driving and parking on sidewalks and in bike lanes was already common, but add to that inexperience, and it’s pretty messy. Especially in an urban setting. You should see the ordeal that surrounds parallel parking.

Old Exercisers: Lots of senior citizens here exercise, but they do it in weird ways. They allow themselves to fall backward into trees, they flail about, they punch their lower backs repeatedly. Here on the beach in Qingdao, where it’s 23 degrees (12 degrees with the windchill), there’s a constant stream of people, usually old men wearing only speedos, from the bathhouses into the ocean and back again.

Nighttime Dancers: In several cities, I’ve stumbled upon groups of 20-60 people braving the cold, dark night to dance. Outside in flat areas–parks, mall plazas, waterfronts–they crank up the CD player and dance, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes Western tunes, sometimes Chinese.

Enough about that. Here are three Qingdao photos from today: the Tsingtao plant on beer street, beach #1, and Qingdao’s primary walking street. Shanghai by train tomorrow.

6) The Size (with 3-4 million people, it’s China’s 20th largest city)

10) Sailing (my favorite college class and their claim to fame since hosting the 2008 Olympic event)

11) Pedestrian Considerations (a coastline jogging path, intersection underpasses, and countdown traffic lights)

12) Good, Cheap Hostels

13) The Beer (had to mention this one–it’s been their specialty since the 19th-century German occupation)

Here are two photos from my hostel (an old observatory), a few of beach #6 and its volleyballers, and three from the Olympic sailing piers.

Mention Qingdao, and many people will recount rather hazy nights spent consuming lukewarm longnecks

Mention Qingdao, and many people will recount rather hazy nights spent consuming lukewarm longnecks of China’s most famous beer. Indeed, Qingdao – the capital of China’s northeastern Shandong Province – is home to the most famous brewery in the country. But there’s a lot more to the city of nine million people than beer, bubbles and brewing.

Boasting the largest fishing and trade port in northern China, the beautiful coastal city is one of extremes. Located in Jiaozhou Bay, the former German treaty port boasts an expansive German concession district, replete with unique colonial architecture dating back hundreds of years, beautiful old villas, and wide, tree-lined avenues. Qingdao also has notable Japanese and Korean communities, thanks to their close proximity to the city, and important trade relationships as a result.

Aside from China’s southern Hainan Island, Qingdao has arguably the best beaches in the country. Further out of town, the magnificent Laoshan Mountains are a starkly beautiful conglomerate of granite steeps and peaks, overflowing with natural springs, and offering spectacular vistas of the ocean and city below.

But perhaps Qingdao’s biggest claim to fame is its designation as an official Olympic city. Come August 8, 2008, it will host the sailing events for the 2008 Beijing summer Olympic Games – one of only five cities home to Olympic events outside of the capital. In preparation, a 45-hectare (111-acre) dockyard in Qingdao’s Fushan Bay has been transformed into a world-class sailing facility, garnering rave reviews from sports enthusiasts during Olympic test events. After the Games, the marina will be remodeled into an exclusive resort featuring a five-star international hotel, an Olympic museum, spa, fitness and health clubs, a shopping mall and office space. Qingdao’s going for gold indeed.

Attractions
Located to the southeast of the city in Jimo, Qingdao’s numerous natural hot springs vary widely in terms of size and temperature. Generally heated to between 30 and 60 Celsius, although sometimes reaching a scorching 93 Celsius, the waters are laden with minerals that will heal even the weariest limbs.
Island Hopping – Also known as Lute Island for the fact that it resembles the ancient musical instrument when viewed from the air, Xiaoqingdao Island is a pleasant little peninsula, connected to the mainland by a thin thread of land. Dotted with black pines, flowers and trees laden with fruit when the season permits, it’s extremely popular with young lovers who converge to stroll through the parks and enjoy views of nearby Yellow Island (Huangdao).

Beach Baby – Qingdao has six beaches, and doesn’t let you forget the fact. The sensibly named Number 1 Beach is also the most popular. If you visit in the winter you’ll see that it’s lined with fine yellow sand, overhung with giant pine and cypress trees. If you visit in summer, all you’ll see is a 580-meter (1,903-foot) stretch of beach umbrellas. The Number 6 Beach is also very popular, especially with tai chi practitioners and fishermen.

Art And Culture
Qingdao is hugely famous for its intricate shell carvings, and the Qingdao Shell Carving Museum is the place in town to get up to speed with the latest trends in the art. Aside from checking out carvings from China’s greatest masters, the museum is a good place to pick up shell souvenirs.

History Of Hops – Tired of checking out hundred-year-old ceramics and bones that have seen better days? The Tsingtao Brewery Museum might just be your pint of ale, then. Built in 1903, the museum is located on the premises of the original Tsingtao Brewery, and it’s an interesting place to learn not only about the history of the city, but also about the history of everyone’s favorite beverage, beer.

Entertainment
Underwater Love – Opened in 1932, China’s first public aquarium, Qingdao Underwater World, sprawls across both sides of the street, just opposite the bustling Number 1 Beach. An underground tunnel connects the various chambers of the sea world, with conveyer belts ferrying you about, permitting almost 360 degree underwater vistas.

Just Cruising – If you’re not in a hurry to get to your next destination, cruise there in style aboard one of the many cruise liners docking in Qingdao. From the Qingdao Passenger Transport Center, ships depart for Shanghai, Yellow Island, Xuejia Island, as well as Inchon, Korea and Shimonoseki, Japan.

Wining And Dining
Take To The Streets – Some of the most authentic cuisine to be had in Qingdao can be found in the dozens of quaint restaurants lining Yunxiao Road Gourmet Street, Minjiang Road Gourmet Street and Maidao Seafood Street. The latter is particularly famous for fried spicy clams, seafood wonton, and roasted squid. For barbeque, head to the stalls of Taishan Road – you’ll be able to smell the sweet aroma of roasting meat and seafood well before you see it.

Beery Good – A small street annexed from the Qingdao Brewery, Beer Street is pretty much just that – a street dedicated to beer. Located in the Dengzhou Road area, the street features dozens of small bars serving up many local brews, as well as liquid gold from all over the world.

Retail Therapy
Mass Market – Attracting almost as many visitors as the Great Wall of China, Jimo Lu sees an average 200,000 daily shoppers hit its aisles for a bit of friendly bargaining. This is the place in Qingdao to visit if you’re after, well, just about anything really – from purses to second hand bicycles, furniture and even obscure Chinese medicine.

Night Shopping – if you still have some energy left, head to the Tai Dong night market. Opening around 5 p.m. every day, Tai Dong is a cheap and fun place to pick up Chinese souvenirs. It’s also a great place to try out local snacks, including smelly tofu, meat skewers and local pork hamburgers.

Hot Events
Clamming Up – Paying homage to its fishing village roots, Qingdao throws out the nets every May for the annual Clam Festival. The festival, which also marks the onset of warmer weather, is basically just an excuse to consume fresh seafood and local beer in the sun, but who’s complaining? If you tire of all the consumption, there are organized activities, including tours of local fishermen’s homes, fishing competitions, and military simulations.

Qingdaofest – Established in 1991, the Qingdao International Beer Festival is one of the most highly anticipated annual events in China. Kicking off on the second weekend of August and lasting 16 days, the festival pays tribute to liquid gold with beer drinking competitions, parties, entertainment, trade exhibitions, and dozens of food and beer stalls representing countries from all around the world. Last year, over 930 tons of beer were consumed across town.

Company info:
Tsingtao Brewery
QINGDAO, CHINA

[No site listed on bottle]

Bottle size sampled: 330 mL

Alcohol: 4.7%
Standard drinks: 1.1

Cap type: Non-twist

Cost: I picked this up for AU$3.20

Label info: ‘Since 1903 our beer has been internationally recognised as the finest beer in China. Our master brewers choose only the finest hops and malted barley to produce this award winning beer’.

What the label really means: Well la di da! Look at us! We’re internationally recognised! Internationally recognised.
In all fairness, this is a pretty decent label description, despite the text requiring a magnifying glass to be read.

The Hell-Cat review starts here

Label: I like the metallic looking green and gold label, the Chinese characters, the Tsingtao (pronounced ‘Ching-Dow’) font, and the little logo. What I don’t like is the neck label giving me details on how I can win a trip to Beijing. Advertising a competition on the label? What, am I drinking Tooheys Extra Dry here? I believe the neck label has been added by the Australian importers of Tsingtao, so unfortunately the low rating is due to their evil hand.

I give it a label rating of 4.5 out of 10.

AROMA: This smells good! A delicious malty, full flavoured aroma wafts out!

Taste: GLASS – This pours really light in colour with an average sized head. I take a sip and note that it is very lightly carbonated…it’s almost to the point where I am searching for a use-by date, indignant that the bottle is flat. I can’t find any indication that something may be wrong with this bottle so I look to the company’s website that informs me “spring water from China’s Laoshan mountain region” is used in the brewing and I wonder if this has caused the lack of carbonation…maybe it has some property that kills bubbles!
On the upside, the light carbonation means it is very smooth. There is a slight citrus taste with an enticingly bitter aftertaste.

I give it a beer from glass rating of 6 out of 10.

Taste: BOTTLE - It’s a little more flavoursome from the bottle (perfect if you order one of these at your local Chinese restaurant and get handed a small water tumbler and told it’s a beer glass), with a stronger bitter hit. But still very mild. It goes back a tad easier here. Bubbles? Where are you? (and I’m not referring to the one under Michael Jackson’s bed)

I give it a taste from bottle rating of 6.5 out of 10.

A word from the wife: “Flat and unenjoyable”

She gave it a taste rating of 3 out of 10.

Accompanying food: Being that this is so light in flavour, I can’t help thinking it has been designed to be consumed with spicy Asian dishes. I suggest a hot Chinese or Thai dish, and the Tsingtao in your greasy palm will hit like a gentle breeze down your trouser leg.

Best season to appreciate: A real Summer beer here folks. Enjoy in the sun.

All-nighter beer? I’d like more carbonation (I still can’t get over this point….), but yeah I’d give it a go all-night!

Other notes: If you believe I have sampled a dodgy bottle, with less carbonation than is normal, let me know! I may just have to re-sample at a later date.

By Gu Qing’er, Epoch Times, Staff Nov 6, 2009 - Eight police officers arrived at Jiang Ming’s

By Gu Qing’er, Epoch Times, Staff Nov 6, 2009 -

Eight police officers arrived at Jiang Ming’s home in Qindao City, Shandong Province on Sept. 15. Jiang, 38 years old and healthy, was summoned to the Badaguan Police Station to sign documents related to an incident from 2006 that had never been closed. Two hours later he was dead, leaving behind a young wife, a 9-year-old son, and elderly parents with illnesses.

Jiang’s wife, Gao Lianqiao, had asked to accompany him to the police station but was not allowed. Worried, she went to the station about an hour after he was taken.

“I found my husband tied with iron rods to an interrogation chair with his head hanging down. I called his name, but he did not respond. He was drooling and appeared to be having a convulsion.

“I asked the police why he was still handcuffed. I wanted them to hurry and take him to a hospital, but they said they would have to wait until after their lunch break to get permission for hospitalization from the Municipal Public Security Bureau. My husband was dying! I was crying very loudly,” Gao said.

Deputy director of the police station Chen Wei responded to Gao by pounding the table and yelling, “I’ll be responsible if he dies,” Gao recounted. She said Chen only agreed to send Jiang to a hospital after Jiang’s older brother and sister-in-law arrived and began calling higher authorities with their cell phones.

But Jiang was not carried to the police car. Instead, police grabbed his arms and dragged him to the car. As the family watched in horror, he stopped breathing and died. Family members said blood was coming out from his ears and liquid from his nose. There were bruises all over his body.

Though there were hospitals in the vicinity, he was taken to a hospital far away where little was done to resuscitate him, according to Gao.

Suspecting he was tortured to death, Jiang’s family has been appealing to various government departments. All the local public security departments, administrative departments, and courts have refused to become involved, and no suspects have been arrested.

“Our son is only 9 years old. He was doing very well at school, but now he doesn’t talk much and cries whenever someone mentions his father’ s death. My mother-in-law suffers from heart disease and cries all day. My father-in-law is diabetic. The whole family is now in chaos,” Gao said…….
My love for the beer Tsingtao led me to the seaside town of Qingdao. A little over 2 hours from Beij

My love for the beer Tsingtao led me to the seaside town of Qingdao. A little over 2 hours from Beijing, Qingdao was a German colony for a while in history and the best thing they left behind is no doubts the beer.

We had lunch at a delicious local restaurant close to the Tsingtao brewery. Of course, we had a beer, or rather I had a pretty big mug of it! The brewery tour was interesting on more of a historical level and the highlight for me is the tasting of the daily brew which is only available at the brewery. The fresh brew was crisp and clear, I loved it!

Delish Tsingtao Beer

Besides the brewery, I would urge you to take a day trip to Laoshan, get a good driver who knows the roads. Some notable sights are the Buddhist temple, the local restaurants along the way, as well as the tea plantation.

Qingdao is charming in many ways, the beer is delicious, but honestly, I wouldn’t linger for more than three days, after that, it may get a little sedated, especially for those who enjoy a good night out!
