The red light from the setting sun over my right shoulder almost makes it look like the trees have already started changing colors. I shot this in RAW format using my old Canon Digital Rebel and then tonemapped it using the excellent qtpfsgui tool.

Am 29.08.2009 wäre Michael Jackson 51 Jahre alt geworden. Ihm zu Ehren gab es an diesem Tag weltweit Flashmobs.

Der Zombie-Flashmob in Berlin wurde von BerlinCityMobber angekündigt, und von MaskWorld.com tatkräftig gesponsort.

Ich fand die Veranstaltung klasse, und möchte mich bei allen Teilnehmern und den Initiatoren bedanken. Es ist nicht so einfach das alles zu organisieren, eine Choreo einzuüben, und die Leute auf den Punkt zu bringen. Das war einfach großartig, laßt euch da mal nichts einreden. Ihr hattet eine Menge Spaß, und ihr habt die Leute unterhalten, darauf kommt es an.

Für mich war das eine willkommene Gelegenheit, meine neue Kamera auszuprobieren, und die Bilder hinterher zu bearbeiten. Dafür, daß ich mich als blutigen [sic] Anfänger betrachte, ist das Ergebnis gar nicht  mal so schlecht geworden, oder?

Ich habe die Bilder etwas “zombifiziert”, damit die Wirkung noch besser rüberkommt Dafür habe ich die Bilder als HDR bearbeitet und per Tone-Mapping den Zombie-Effekt realisiert.

Ganz unten befindet sich übrigens ein Index-Bild. Bei insg. 280 Fotos fiel die Auswahl ziemlich schwer, und wenn ihr meint, daß davon noch ein Bild in die Galerie aufgenommen werden sollte, dann schreibt einen Kommentar und benennt die Bildnummer.

Alle Bilder können per Klick vergrößert dargestellt werden. Wer gerne ein bestimmte Bild in noch höherer Auflösung haben möchte, kann diesen Wunsch (unter der Angabe der Bildnummer) in den Kommentaren äußern. Dafür solltet ihr im entspr. Feld natürlich eine gültige Mail-Adresse hinterlassen (Adressen werden natürlich nicht weitergegeben, ich mag auch  keinen Spam).

Ansonsten können die Bilder frei verwendet werden, einen Link auf das Blog möchte ich dann aber gerne haben.

Yo se que esta técnica de fotografía tiene ya algun tiempo pero pues yo no la conocía y la quiero compartir con aquellos que aún no la conoces.

HDR, o High Dynamic Range, consiste en tomar 3 o más veces la misma foto a diferentes niveles de exposición con el fin que queden registrados la mayor cantidad de detalles tanto en sombras como en lugares iluminados. Luego, estas fotos se “unen” ya sea con un programa especial que hace casi todo por uno -como qtpfsgui (gratis) o photomatrix pro (pago)- o con photoshop.

Sono tornato da poco da una breve vancanza sulla riviera del Conero, e mi sono trovato con una serie di foto di paesaggio con buone potenzialità ma un po’ piatte a vedersi. Il problema è che il momento migliore per questo tipo di fotografia sarebbe l’alba o il tramonto, quando la luce è quella “giusta”, il cielo si riempie di colori, rosso, oro… ma non sempre si può scegliere. Scattando foto nelle ore più calde della giornata mi sono ritrovato con un cielo troppo luminoso ed il paesaggio piatto e con colori spenti (come nella foto qui sotto).

Riviera del Conero - Prima del trattamento HDR

In questo caso sono stato abbastanza fortunato, durante la giornata alcune nubi hanno velato il cielo e la luce si è fatta un po’ meno intensa. Il risultato così com’è risulta comunque abbastanza scadente.

Per ovviare al problema ho deciso di provare a recuperare in parte le tonalità più estreme della foto utilizzando Photomatix, il programma più diffuso per la realizzazione di immagni HDR. In breve la tecnica consiste nell’utilizzare più foto riprese a diversi valori di esposizione,variando solo il tempo di posa e non l’apertura (per mantenere costante la profondità di campo), il programma poi prende il meglio da ognuna in termini di esposizione. In questo modo si possono ottenere anche immagini creative, nel senso che la foto perde parte del suo realismo per prendere un aspetto quasi pittorico, come in questo esempio di una foto di mio figlio.

Purtroppo non avevo scattato altre esposizioni per questa immagine, ma Photomatix dà anche la possibilità di ottenere un HDR a partire da un singolo file RAW con buoni risultati. Così ho dato in pasto il mio paesaggio al programma, ho impostato i settaggi in modo da ottenere una immagine abbastanza realistica ed il risultato è stato soddisfacente. Ecco qui sotto la mia foto dopo qualche ulteriore leggero ritocco con photoshop.

Riviera del Conero - Dopo il trattamento con Photomatix

I colori sono molto più vivaci ed anche il cielo ed il mare hanno preso vita, la foto che prima appariva piatta adesso ha acquisito profondità. Non è un trattamento che uso su ogni immagine, anche perchè il tempo impiegato per tutto il procedimento è stato di circa 20 minuti, ma sicuramente ne è valsa la pena.

Photomatix non è l’unico programma che uso per fare immagini HDR, un’altra ottima soluzione è Qtpfsgui che per di più è gratis e permette di ottenere ottimi risultati. Forse un po’ più complicato per via delle molte possibilità di mappatura dell’immagine (tone mapping), ma con un po’ di pratica si impara velocemente.

L’unica raccomandazione è di non farsi prendere la mano, è facile creare un’imagine che a prima vista sembra bella ma che a lungo andare si rivela troppo processata. Io per sicurezza le riguardo sempre il giorno dopo a mente fresca, e a volte mi ritrovo a tornare sui miei passi per recuperare la foto ed ottenere qualcosa di visivamente pià realistico.

Kinzie Street Bridge. My first real foray into HDR…

During my visit of Amsterdam, I tried to do some bracketing at places with a big difference between light and dark areas, having in mind to follow the present hype: High Dynamic Range effects, sometimes really nice and sometimes simply exaggerated, but always somewhat interesting. I’m aware of the differences in the opinions of people about it, as willwm says in his blog:

Some people love the effect and others hate it. Some say it’s not ‘pure’ photography others ask what pure photography really is? Some call it ‘fake’ and others see it as a thing of beauty.

Well, to be honest, I don’t really care about what people say about it in general, because it can be so extremely different that you cannot really evaluate it as a hole. What I think is that it can be nice and ugly, depending on how it’s used, and that I seem to use it a bit too intensively because I want to play with the effect. Maybe I’ll learn that in the future

Because I did not carry a tripod with me, some of the images where not fitting exact enough to make a hdr-image with them, others weren’t different enough in their exposure (still too bright/too dark areas), but some where ok and so I started generating HDRs, then took these and tonemapped them (everything in Qft… Qtfp… – let me look up the name – Qtpfsgui). After some tweaking in gimp, they looked like this:

I thought I can show them here, since they are the first more or less successful tests I did (although it has really nothing to do with 3D graphics). Would be interested in what you think about it.

Para hacer una foto en HDR (High Dynamic Range) o Alto Rango Dinámico, existen varios programas algunos disponibles para PC y Mac. Aunque la finalidad es la misma, trabajan de forma muy distinta y los resultados varían mucho de unos a otros. Podéis partir de 3 fotos iguales con distintas exposiciones, o partir de un raw, ya que este tiene suficiente información para hacer una foto en HDR y sin el inconveniente de que se mueva la cámara (trepidaciones) o aparezcan personas o varíe la escena.

• Qtpfsgui: Es gratuito bueno, con licencia Open Source. Disponible para Mac, Windows y Linux. Acepta manipulación de la foto y variar los datos EXIF

• Photomatix: uno de los más conocidos, pero de pago (aunque hay una version de evaluación para Mac y Windows). Fácil de utilizar, interface sencilla, intuitivo y buenos resultados, aunque elimina los datos EXIF. Han creado un plugin para Lightroom (Mac y Windows)

El HDR es un resultado impresionante pero no hay que abusar. Hay muchos grupos en flickr de fotos en HDR, algunos especializados en cada herramienta.

Photoshop tambien permitiría componer fotos en HDR, pero sin Tonemaping, así que el resultado no es muy espectacular.

Consejo, las fotos con nubes y claros, así como las de suelos mojados y brillos quedan espectaculares.

As far as I can tell, HDR just improves the dynamic range of your shots by stitching together multiple exposures. It also creates mucho fail on the internet.

So, I just wanted to try out this HDR tonemapping software on Linux called Qtpfsgui (they need a better name, srsly), and having no shots to HDR, I just snapped one to test out the software. The software itself was kinda OK, and had some interface issues (profile 1-6, WTF? Tell me what they are or at least give an inkling of what they are good for).

HDR cannot save thy failness

I need to find a legitimate use for HDR. Maybe when I get a shot where the detail in the shadow and in the highlights need to stand out. I seriously HATE how everything appears oversharpened and/or oversaturated after HDR tonemapping.
