QTVR Panorama Uni Hannover 1996 — nebenbei meine alte Uni ...

My two last posts have had pretty serious content, so maybe I’m allowed something which is just trivial fun… These are actually called “Stereoscopic 300 degree projections”, a sort of sub-category of panoramic photography.

Princess Sophie next to our summercottage (click image for more)

Took me a while to figure out how these are done – I mean directly out of raw images it was straight forward, but out of existing content, either QTVR or an equirectangular? But I figured out the solution eventually.

Some more examples I did yesterday can be found in the Princess Sophie Equirectangulars.

Not that you could really use them for anything more than an odd curiosity item occasionally…

Well, not very much… I mentioned the Berlin blog earlier; the slideshow I did with four simultaneus images over there did generate some discussion… What I would have liked to do, was having four simultaneus slideshows, with one ambient audio looping. Then each of these four slideshows would have acted as a hotspot linking to a “proper” slideshow of that particular athlete.

But, this would have meant several I-frames overlapping – and frame-within-a-frame – and this several times – is always a bit scary to do. And within a time-frame of couple of minutes, I just couldn’t pull that one off.

Mikko Hirvonen’s WRC-racecar in Jyväskylä got quite an audience on the MTV3 website, and I am actually pretty proud of it. Considering that it is a simple jpeg image, check the lensflare on the sidemirror. Talk about adding an illusion of reality…

Flying with a helicopter – also in Jyväskylä – and trying to align a racecar and another helicopter shooting live video of the race below us was pretty challenging, as you can see in this audioslideshow. Visually this is – in my opinion – rather boring, but it is very informative (if you understand Finnish, that is…)

Madonna Concert in Helsinki earlier in August got over 50 000 hits on my server. I did iPod versions of both Hirvonen’s car (in PangeaVR) and Madonna (in Quicktime) and especially the Madonna one is pretty cool, but unfortunately for copyright reasons, they cannot be published here, sorry.

I have just discovered my first dislike for this WordPress.com blog – Flash embeds are not per

I have just discovered my first dislike for this WordPress.com blog – Flash embeds are not permitted in posts, pages, or text widgets. For security reasons the tags needed for these to work have been removed.

This is frustrating because I’ve spent quite some time on learning how to create immersive spherical panoramas. After the Supanova cosplay event I discovered another Melbourne photographer’s website, Neil Creek, who has some really neat examples of these type of projections. 360 Cities also has some extraordinary dynamic scenes which boggle the mind.

As for available resources on the web explaining how to compose, execute and stitch the required photographs and then convert the projected composite to view as a QuickTime VR or Flash object, here are some that I found:

Peter Gawthrop’s Creating Spherical Panoramas with the Canon 5D and 15mm Fisheye Lens

Outside the Lines’ QTVR for the Rest of Us

panoramas.dk STITCHING AND AUTHORING PANORAMAS

Panomundo’s How to Make QTVR Panoramas

Alfred Nicholas Gardens Lake - Equirectangular Projection

After taking a set of images from a standard tripod at the Alfred Nicholas Gardens on Mt. Dandenong I set about trying to develop my own budget method for creating and displaying immersive spherical panoramas. The summary is as follows:

Panoramic stitcher: Hugin 0.7.0

Flash and QTVR panorama converter: Pano2VR

Free Flash object hosting: Google Sites

Permitted blog embedding: Blogger

The immersive Flash panorama of the above projection can be viewed on a Blogger account I created. Noting the Flash object’s width, height and hosting URL: http://sites.google.com/site/ccdoh1flash/Home/Boathouse_out.swf, the HTML code I used to embed it within Blogger is:

Obviously I have a long way to go in refining the method (particularly in exposure control) but I believe this to be an excellent beginning.

Maybe I should mention that Photoshop and its snazzy function called “photo merge” produced this panorama quicker than I could say “QTVR!”. It pulls several shots into one nice panoramic view. No heavy touch ups required.

I remember the pain of stitching shots together for the legendary Apple QTVRs (why was that called Virtual Reality anyway, wasn’t it real world photos?).
If you want to create a 360° panoramic image or a QTVR movie (like this one), this post exaplains ho

If you want to create a 360° panoramic image or a QTVR movie (like this one), this post exaplains how to do it easy and for free. This is very simple tutorial for beginners. There are three steps: make photos, stitch a panoramic image then transform it to QTVR movie. Step two is done with a free open-source program called Hugin that runs on all platforms. Step three in this example is done with a free Mac software MakeCubic, for others OS you have to find another software.

Step One: Make photos

Very easy: stay somewhere, like on a top of a mountain, and make photos all around you. Photos must overlap, about 25-30% is sufficient. Last photo must overlap the first one. Photos must be well aligned, otherwise your panorama will be wavy. Use manual mode if your camera has one, so you will have the same exposure and white balance for all photos.

Step Two: Stitch photos with Hugin

In the past one had to manually define common points in pictures. This was boring and time consuming. Latest versions of Hugin includes a tool called Autopano-SIFT that do this dirty work automatically. After you have installed Hugin, go to “Preferences > Autopano” menu and make sure that the “Use alternative autopano” checkbox is unchecked.

Then, in the “Assistant” tab (the one that is opened by default) click on “Load Images…”, select all your photos and click “Open”. The automatic panorama creation process starts. First, the autopano tool searches for matching points in your pictures; then Hugin try to find the best way to stitch them together. All this takes few minutes, or more. When the process is finished you are presented with a preview of the result. At this point it may be interesting to save the project file.

If you are happy with the preview, click on the “Stitcher” tab and set some parameters. Actually, only one parameter is really important: “Panorama Canvas Size”. It’s the size of the resulting image. Choose your width, the height is updated automatically. For my example I choose the width of 5000. Then, click on “Stitch now!” button, choose a file name and wait again. After few minutes your panoramic picture is ready.

Step Three: Make QTVR with MakeCubic

This last step is not so automatic, you may have to do many tries before you reach the correct result. Launch MakeCubic program, then press Apple-O to open its working window. First, choose your panoramic file. Then, choose the width and height in pixels of the movie. Click the OK button and wait that your .mov file is ready. Open it. The result is not perfect: there is a lot of black space below and above the panorama. So, go back to MakeCubic, press Apple-O, and modify the “Tilt” parameter. Min tilt value controls the lower part of the picture and the max tilt controls the upper part. Default is -90 and 90. Set something like -30 and 30, then build a new QTVR with those parameters. The black space is now gone, probably a part of your panorama is gone too. You may have to make many tries before you reach an acceptable result.

Other parameters are also interesting. The “Pan” controls the initial horizontal rotation of the panorama, so you can choose the most nice part of the picture to present first. The “FOV” controls the zoom, I used the maximal value (= the minimal zoom). As I had the requirement to fit my .mov in 2MB I had to modify the compression. Finally, I found that setting the “Tilling” parameter to 1×1 produces smaller files without visible quality loss.

That’s it.

I drive past these beautiful towers every evening. The way Al Khobar is developing at the moment, I don’t think it will be very long before they lose their splendid isolation.

I wonder if photography is still illegal in Saudi Arabia? When I first flew into the country 9 years ago, the flight attendant read out a message to say that drugs, alcohol and photography were illegal in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. That same year I applied for a permit to take photographs on the street. It was granted, but the conditions were so restrictive I never used it. I had to say when, exactly, and where I was going to take photographs. An explanation of why the photographs were to be taken and how they were going to be used also had to be submitted in writing – each time I went out to shoot. In addition, I had to have a Saudi assistant with me at all times to explain what I was doing, just in case somebody asked.

I think the conditions have improved somewhat, but as I set up my tripod to take this shot, my heart was thumping in my ears and I was scanning the horizon for police cars and angry security guards carrying machine guns.

The light at 5.30 pm is beautiful at this time of year. Even the beat up Toyota Echo looks almost good.

§ Security flaws in how QuickTime handles movie files. By luring one of your users into viewing a maliciously crafted movie file, an attacker can exploit either of two QuickTime flaws to execute code on that user’s computer (or, less worrisome, crash QuickTime). Some of the files susceptible to this attack would be formatted as H.264 (typically arrives as a .MOV file), MPEG-4 Part 10 (the format used on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD files), or MPEG-4 AVC files (the format used by many consumer-grade camcorders and on iPod and PlayStation3). These vulnerabilities can be exploited on Windows and OS X computers.

§ Flaws in how QuickTime handles PICT images. PICT is a graphical image file format that still enjoys some use, but has largely been replaced by PDFs. An attacker can craft a malicious PICT file that is designed to exploit any of three different errors in how QuickTime opens PICT. If a user opened the booby-trapped file, the results could either crash QuickTime or execute the attacker’s code on the victim’s computer. These flaws affect both Windows and OS X.

Apple’s alert also describes flaws in handling QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR) files. QTVR essentially stitches photos together to give the impression of a 360-degree view. You might see it in use, for example, on a web site that shows what the inside of a hotel room looks like. It is not used by the vast majority of our subscribers, so we’ll spare you the details (although you can get them in Apple’s advisory). Apple also mentions flaws in QuickTime’s handling of a codec called Indeo. Indeo is just another way of creating .MOV files.

Solution Path:

Apple has released QuickTime 7.5.5 to fix these security issues. Windows and OS X administrators should download, test, and deploy the appropriate update at their earliest convenience. By default, the download bundles iTunes with QuickTime; because iTunes often has security issues of its own, we recommend that you select the option of downloading QuickTime alone.

§ QuickTime 7.5.5 for Windows

For All Users:

Because QuickTime handles so many different media types (many of which are essential for doing business today), trying to block exploitable file types using your firewall may not be the best way to support your organization’s mission. Instead, your best solution is to download and install Apple’s fixes.

Status:
