Sean plays bass for Camden-based trio, The Stayaways, fills his bedroom with mahoosive amplifiers and his stomach with oddities from Borough Market. He enjoys fiddling with programming codes, oooh-ing and ahh-ing over planes, and spoiling his dog, Muddy. Oh, and don’t touch the hair.

LLO: How long have you lived in London?
SM: Erm, 27 years

LLO: Where are you (or your family) from originally if not London?
SM: Mum’s Irish; Dad is from London

LLO: Best thing about London?
SM: Me…..Does that count? Otherwise, the diversity. It’s one of the few places where you can dress or do whatever you like and no one really worries about it. Also, there are so many hidden places and quirky independent things to keep you interested and always something going on.

LLO: Worst thing about London?
SM: Dodgy winters without real snow, smelly people on the tube, busses with erratic schedules…

LLO: North, south, east or west?
SM: Northwest every time

LLO: Best restaurant?
SM: Depends on mood. Ooooh, the Jerk Pit on Wardour street, I think. I like the Chelsea kitchen too. Paul for hot chocolate.

LLO: Best shop?
SM: Depends on funds, but Wunjo or Macari’s Musical Instruments for interesting vintage guitars or cool handmade effects and a good chat. Foyles for books and coffee and cakes

LLO: Best place to escape the city?
SM: Hampstead Heath or the South Bank, walking along the river.

LLO: 2012 Olympics – stay or go?
SM: Go

LLO: How do you spend your time on the tube?
SM: Reading and/or people watching.

LLO: Most random thing you’ve seen in London.
SM: There’s a guy with a pink tank in Southwark. I’ve only seen pictures, but it looked cool.

LLO: Best place to catch a gig?
SM: Dublin Castle

LLO: Best local band?
SM: Can I say mine? The Stayaways

LLO: Favourite book, song or film about London?
SM: Dial M for Murder is kinda getting up there. I just saw it in a theatre and it was really good. There is a film version set in London. Quadrophenia is a film I really love too and it is set in London.

LLO: Favourite London discovery?
SM: There’s a part of Hampstead heath where you can climb up this building and see all over North London.

LLO: Best place to spend a Sunday afternoon?
SM: Pub having a roast or walking through Portobello Market. Ooooh, or the food-y part of Camden Market.

LLO: Best museum or gallery?
SM: The Victoria and Albert is amazing, although there’s a place called the Shuttleworth Collection just north of London that has loads of vintage planes that still fly. It’s really cool and good fun for aviation geeks :0.

LLO: Favourite market?
SM: Portobello. There’s loads of cool stuff from the guys selling old things they’ve discovered to the old clothes, food stalls and then down to the classier end. Always a good vibe and you can stop off at a pub to take a break or get a fresh coconut.

LLO: Most influential Londoner?
SM: If I was under the influence, could I be classed as influential?

LLO: Best time of year in London?
SM: Probably around June/July when things start to get warmer and the days are longer.

LLO: First place to take a visitor?
SM: Some pubs around Camden to experience the nightlife and at the same time a kind of local feeling if you get the right ones.
 
LLO: Boris is……
SM: …a scary cyclist

LLO: What would you change about the city if you had the power to do so?
SM: Hmmm, I’d love it if the tubes ran later.

LLO: If you were to dress up as one of the tube station names for a costume party, which would you be?
SM: If I was playing safe then probably go for King George V (on the DLR), however I think I’d prefer to be daring and try Queensway

Modkultur in Düsseldorf und anderswo!

Musikalisch ist Düsseldorf ja in einigen Disziplinen in der ersten Liga unterwegs.

Weltweit bekannt ist ja die Kraftwerk- und Elektronikvergangenheit (und Gegenwart); ebenso die Toten Hosen, Heino oder Marius Müller Westernhagen sind als Düsseldorfer Jungens weitläufig bekannt. Auch das der Punk u.a. in Düsseldorf und da besonders im Ratinger Hof (Mit-) erfunden wurde ist spätestens seit der Würdigung durch die Aussstellung „Zurück zum Beton“ in der Düsseldorfer Kunsthalle offiziellen Kreisen häppchenweise nachgereicht worden.

Tja und was gab es sonst noch so, etwa zeitgleich zu Beginn der Punk Explosion?

Richtig, die MODS. Der THE WHO Film „Quadrophenia“ hatte sie dann Anfang der 80 er Jahre salonfähig gemacht, die Parkaträger und Rollerfahrer mit Ihren Dreiknopfanzügen und College Schuhen.
Ganz klar, die Mod -Welle schwappte seinerzeit von der Insel rüber – Pub Rock, Northern Soul und Ska standen musikalisch Pate. Der verhältnismäßig übererwachsene Kleidungsstil sollte Rebellion ausdrücken, der Roller die Freiheit und der Parka zunächst nur vor Wind und Wetter schützen.
Und die deutschen Szene Zentren lagen in Düsseldorf (!!!) und in Hamburg. Die Düsseldorfer waren besser gekleidet (ach ja?!) und hatten mehr MOD Anhänger, mit „Stunde X“, den „Profis“ oder „Start“ vielleicht auch die bekanntesten Band und mit dem OKIE DOKIE auch den angesagtesten Club innerhalb der dafür gerne erweiterten Stadtgrenzen (war nämlich in Heerdt beheimatet).

Auch die Altstadt zwischen Ratinger Hof und dem DinANull sowie Fattys Pup waren beliebte Treffpunkte, oder die LÖWEN Skulptur auf der Kö. Passend zum Stadtwappen wurden sogar die „Düsseldorf Lions“ als Mod Club gegründet und Patches (Aufnäher) in Umlauf gebracht.
Es gab Fanzines (Fan Magazine!), Mod Treffen, Auswärtsfahrten (Hamburg, England, Eckenförde, ….

I want to give you guys a preview of a new project I’m currently working on.  I’ll soon be launching SoulShoot Photography which will be a dedicated area of my portraiture geared to Mods & Scooterists.

During the sixties my dad (Darrell) spent a lot of his youth on the back of a Vespa (a GS160 to be exact), cruising around and getting up to no good no doubt  His love of scooters is still in him today with him currently owning two Vespas and still attending local meets and rallies.  Of course, this era wasnt just about the transport, but the clothes, the music & just the way of life and this scene is still rife today all over the world with enthusiasts, like my dad still celebrating this culture that has stood the test of time.

Where I come in is that I, like my dad have always been fascinated by this phenomenon and so wanted to play my part in this culture and celebrate it by dedicating a part of my photography to producing some nostalgic, yet contemporary images for those guys that still live the scene, capturing personalities in their own environment.

I have my first shoot booked in for the weekend, so am really looking forward to seeing what we come up with.  I look forward to putting the images up for you all to see real soon.

This little gem came off a Who live bootleg, Taking the Capitol, recorded at the Capitol Centre in Largo, Maryland back in ‘73.  It’s not the best recording or the best performance, but it does have a very prominent bass and some wonderful snippets of Townshend explaining Quadrophenia.

I can really relate to that quote, though.  Quadrophenia changed my life.  I finally had something to relate to for my various identity crises and struggle to be a mod.  And mod has been the only subculture I’ve been involved in that I really clicked with and didn’t make me feel like a poser trying to assert myself.

What can I say, they’re my favourite band.  And they always will be.

Quadrophenia es una película británica de 1979 basada la ópera rock de 1973 Quadrophenia por The Who.

Corre el año 1964 en Londres, y Jimmy pertenece a una banda de mods, jóvenes impecables que se mueven en sus scooters italianas Vespa o Lambretta. Sus disputas con los rockers -que visten de cuero y llevan grandes motocicletas-, son continuas.

Der Oktober vor 30 Jahren war für mich eine absolut lebensverändernde Erfahrung.
Ich war aus meiner Heimatstadt weggezogen nach Köln, es war nicht meine erste Wohnung, aber eine völlig neue Stadt.
Ich hatte mit dem Studium angefangen. Geschichte, Theater-Film-Fernsehwissenschaft, Germanistik. Eigentlich wollte ich ja mal Psychologie studieren, aber den NC hatte ich verpasst. Nun da ich sowieso Musik machte und Kabarett, wollte ich etwas in dieser Richtung machen. Dazu war und bin ich ein absoluter Erich Kästner Fan, der hatte Deutsch, Geschichte und Theatergeschichte studiert. Smile.
Ein Glück war dass viele meiner Freunde auch nach Köln gegangen sind. Es war die schönste Zeit meines Lebens dort in Köln zu studieren. Ich lernte sehr viele wunderbare Menschen kennen. Köln hatte damals schon ein Nachtleben wie kaum eine deutsche Großstadt neben Berlin und München. Das Luxor und das Blue Shell sind immer noch mit die angesagtesten Läden für Nachtleben und Konzerte. Cool.
Nur als Info für die Nachgeborenen: Damals hatten wir weder Handys noch Internet. Ehrlich keiner von uns hätte sich sowas auch nur vorstellen können. Die meisten von uns hatten noch nicht mal ein Telefon. So war es notwendig sich rechtzeitig vorher zu verabreden, wenn man Samstagabend ausgehen wollte. In Köln konnte es dann schonmal passieren, dass man sich verpasste, wenn man zu spät kam. Und so zog ich manche Samstag Nacht alleine durch die Nachtlokale, um am Montag in der Uni dann zu hören, daß die anderen auch z.B. im Blue Shell gewesen sind nur eben früher als ich.
Ich war in dem Sommer 1979 für 3 Monate bei meinem Bruder in Melbourne gewesen. Australien war eine Erleuchtung für mich. Ich habe nie wieder so eine geniale Mischung aus Disziplin und Südländischer Lebensweise erlebt. Die Menschen dort kennen kein Vordrängeln, kein Schubsen kein ich habe es eiliger wie Du oder ich bin besser wie Du. Weil alle dort zeit haben, unendlich viel Zeit. Der Hauptzweck der Arbeit ist die Freizeit vernünftig zu gestalten, dafür macht man gerne Überstunden, um die in einer sinnvollen Form wieder abzufeiern.
Ein Freund meines Bruders war auch zu Besuch damals, er lebte auf Papua und machte auf mich den Eindruck eines Gurus. So eine Ruhe und Weisheit strahlte er aus. Aber er war eigentlich nur ein Farmer.
Das waren meine Eindrücke die ich mitbrachte und die mich völlig verändert hatten.
Das war mein Leben in diesem warmen Oktober 1979.
Gleichzeitig marschierten die Sowjets in Afghanistan ein, aus den selben Gründen wie heute die Amerikaner und mit denselben Problemen. Dies und der NATO-Doppelbschluss sorgten für eine neue Eskalation des Kalten Krieges. Das bedeutetete für uns Menschen, daß jeden Moment die Erde in die Luft fliegen konnte. Jede Sirenenübung bedeutete kalte Angst.
Die Grünen zogen 1979 zum erstenmal in Bremen in ein Landesparlament ein. Noch gab es keine Bundespartei.
Das Atomare Endlager in Gorleben war Dauerthema. Es war das Jahr der Hausbesetzungen. Beides war ständiger Stoff für Demonstrationen und harten Auseinandersetzungen mit der Polizei. Es wurden Telefonlisten eingeführt unter den linken Studenten. Man wurde über eine Demo, eine Hausbesetzung oder auch eine Räumung eines besetzten Hauses von jemandem informiert und hatte genau eine Telefonnummer, die man selber informieren musste. Heute würde man das wohl als Flashmob bezeichnen. Gleichzeitig gab es Tips und Infos, woran man erkennen konnte, dass ein Telefon abgehört wurde. Schließlich befanden wir uns in einem Deutschland, das überall Terroristen und Sympathisanten vermutete, wo es um eine andere politische Meinung ging. Für mich begann an der Universität überhaupt ein verstärktes politisches Leben.
Im Kino starteten Apokalypse Now und Alien, die ich beide nicht im Kino gesehen habe. Dafür habe ich mir 2 Wochen später dann Quadrophenia den Film von The Who angesehen. Immerhin war das schon lange meine Lieblingsplatte.
Musikalisch änderte sich auch alles New Wave und Punk beherrschten mich und die Hitparaden. Joe Jackson, The Police, Gary Numan’S Tubewayarmy, Peter Gabriel, das waren meine Topacts 1979 und sie veränderten meinen Musikgeschmack total. Heute ist vielleicht nicht mehr so klar, dass Peter Gabriel einer der wichtigsten New Wave Musiker war. Es war keine Genesismusik, die er Solo produzierte, sondern purer New Wave.
Aber es spielten diesen Oktober 1979 auch Supertramp in Köln in der Sporthalle mit ihrer Breakfast in Europe Tour.
Die neue Generation Musiker war schon am Start, die alte noch auf ihrem Höhepunkt.

Yes, I’m very lazy. I’m tired, it’s a long weekend, and I’m not in the mood to be snarky or witty. I’m just enjoying my relaxation time. I went to Armageddon yesterday, and I’m going to hand out flyers tomorrow, so I’ll blog about those at some stage tomorrow, hopefully with photos. But for now, Music! I’m going to put my iPod on shuffle, and the first interesting song that comes up, I’ll leave you with.

There’s a scene in Tommy, The Who’s rock opera, where Roger Daltrey is screaming, “I’m a sensaaaation” while flying around, bare-chested, on a hang glider. I was secretly hoping this is how Daltrey would open his Commodore show on Saturday (Oct. 10), gliding to the stage from a rope ala Mary Poppins but nope.

Andy Betts marches across the Fox Blog turf with his Filbert Street Memory from The FOX 108 – October 2001

There is a defining moment in Director Franc Roddam’s fine 1979 film of The Who’s ‘Quadrophenia’. The Mods, having arrived in Brighton beautifully suited and booted and pilled up, park up their Lambrettas and march (no, make that ‘strut’) through a disbeliving Bank Holiday public singing en masse:  “We are the Mods, we are the Mods, we are we are we are the Mods!”
It is one of those cinematic adrenaline rushes that I marvel at every time I watch the video.
I have come close to such a moment but once in my forty-four years, it was at Filbert Street on June 7^th 1971 when City played Cagliari in the Anglo-Italian Tournament.
I don’t know or care who devised the short-lived competition or even on what basis teams were selected to compete in it. What I do know is that even in the less cynical climate of 1971 it was regarded as pretty much of a joke with its sole saving grace being the provision of more exotic and competitive pre-season action than was the norm then. I suppose its current counterpart would be the Inter-twobob Cup.
I had arrived in Leicester in 1969 as an eleven year old whose Dad’s job had brought the family here from Ipswich. We settled in Oadby and once I had endured a couple of ‘new boy’ kickings at Gartree High School I settled in and found the sense of music and fashion in Leicester an absolute revelation after the ruralism of Ipswich. Being in my early teens and obsessed with music and clothes I experimented with the ‘Scooby’ look – all greatcoat, tie die and loon pants and although I loved seeing ‘Head’ bands at the Uni and DeMontfort Hall I always felt a bit of a plonker in the clobber.  I also realised that many ‘Scoobs’ were swots or snobs or even both and as I was neither I fell out of love with them.
The ‘Scoobs’ rivals in 1969 and into early 1970 were the Skinheads, whose patriotism, unambiguity and work ethic I admired but whose violence and racist tendencies deterred me from allegiance (also, I couldn’t fight my way out of a paper bag). But around Christmas 1970 my struggle for an identity started to bear fruit. First up, my mate at school, Dave Harvey, played me his Blue Beat Record’s copy of Prince Buster’s ‘Al Capone’ which stayed in my head until it was blown out of there in March 71 when Radio 1 played a reggae instrumental called ‘Double Barrel’ by Dave and Ansil Collins. I remember running to Brees Records in Oadby to hear it on their booth before buying it, running home and playing over and over on my ‘Dansette Challenge’. One month later it was joined by my first Motown record, ‘Remember Me’ by Diana Ross (who was the first woman I loved, and it was love. Honest!).
While I devoured the staple music diet of the ‘Skins’ the cult metamorphosed into the much more acceptable Suedeheads who were a step back towards the halcyon days of the Mods.
The clothes were lovely and through a combination of saving my paper round money and pestering my Mum I soon had the whole wardrobe and in that June of 1971 I rather nervously set out on the Midland Red from Oadby to the station attired in my Prince of Wales Harrington jacket, Fred Perry, raised seam trousers and ‘blakeyed up’ brogues. Studiously avoiding eye contact (or in my case bi-focal contact) with anyone who looked tougher than me (ie everyone) I skulked into the Kop for City v Cagliari to join hundreds of youths dressed just like me.
‘Of Fossils & Foxes’ shows we won the game 2-1 and that Nish and Weller scored. What that excellent tome doesn’t mention is that at half-time every ‘Suede’ standing in the Kop End into which City had been kicking in the first half legged over the wall and swaggered chanting past a powerless small police presence and a contemptuous but silent Main Stand into a cowering Filbert Street End to take up residence for the second half.
Somewhere in the midst of those marching Suedes, absolutely cacking himself but peacock proud and buzzing, was an awkward, myopic youth genuinely feeling somebody for the first time in his fourteen years.
In the thirty years since, Filbert Street’s highs and lows have run a course through my life but nothing on the field of play has quite galvanised me the way that march from the Kop did.

The Filth and the Fury , The Sex Pistols -  documentário sobre a banda inglesa de punk rock Sex Pistols. E ainda tem Vivienne Westwood (que casou com o produtor da banda Malcom McLaren) e o início da sua carreira, incluindo a loja SEX, que tinha a borracha como sua principal matéria - prima. Para entender que o Pistols foram tudo e nada ao mesmo tempo.

Em 1963, o hit I Want to Hold Your Hand, dos Beatles, ocupou a primeira colocação nas paradas de sucesso nos Estados Unidos , abrindo espaço pra que em 1964, uma enxurrada de bandas inglesas divulgasse seu trabalho ao público yankee. Foi a assim chamada British Invasion, evento importante na história do Rock’n'Roll.

Dentre esses artistas, estava um bando de rapazes que tocava Mod Rock, cantando com voz rasgada e uma certa pegada de soul, tão comum em bandas britânicas da época, justamente as músicas deste primeiro disco, contendo covers como Beautiful Delilah e Too Much Monkey Business, de Chuck Berry e Cadillac do grande mestre Bo Diddley, além do hit que deslanchou o The Kinks, You Really Got Me.

Não á toa, que The Kinks está presente na trilha sonora de filmes ambientados nos anos 60, como um dos clássicos de filmes de gangster, dirigido e atuado por Robert de Niro, Desafio no Bronx, e Quadrophenia, produzido pelo The Who, sendo esse exatamente conhecido por retratar a frustrações de um jovem, tendo como plano de fundo e causador de crises existenciais, os conflitos tribais entre os Mods e os Rockers.

Live every day! We’ve certainly lived this day.  I’m not sure how it’s possible to pack so much into one day.  I’ve been for a 20 mile cycle ride through West Sussex, later Ess and I cycled to town for small shopping and to collect items from the post office, we sat by the lake in the sun and ate our lunch, we did a bit of gardening, we went to see Quadrophenia and I cooked us roast lamb tonight.

Nos encontramos ante otro desastre de acogida de la crítica que hoy se ha convertido en un clásico.

La película es un canto a la juventud, sus contradicciones y su grandeza: los ideales, los sueños, las primeras sensaciones, los errores y la aceptación de la realidad. Todos nos podremos ver reflejados.

Comienzo de Quadrophenia con The Real Me

Ambientada en el Londres de 1964, un chico llamado Jimmy (Phil Daniels), perteneciente a una banda juvenil de estilo mod enfrentada a los rockers vive su juventud: la relación con los amigos, las drogas, el amor. En definitiva la ilusión por todo. Conforme avanza la película irá comprendiendo que no es todo ideal y chocará con el mundo real.

Elementos interesantes de la película:

• La actuación de Phil Daniels que interpreta a Jimmy con su sensibilidad, su rebeldía y locura me parece sensacional.
• La música de The Who con temas como my generation, love reign o’er me o bell boy.
• La actuación de Sting como As de oros y en concreto un momento de la película en la que baila en una discoteca con cara de chulo, sencillamente descojonante: The Ace Face (Sting)
• Los últimos 20 minutos que reflejan la conversión del ideal de la juventud a asumir el mundo real en tres videoclips enlazados: Nostalgia – Choque- Aceptación

- Nostalgia (love reign o,er me): Junto al mar, Jimmy observa un hombre mayor nadando, impasible ante las olas. El agua de una ola llega a él en la orilla pero no quiere que le moje.., caminando por el paseo marítimo se cruza con varios abuelos en silla de ruedas obervando la playa, los ve muertos en vida, no quiere ni mirar.. Después encuentra el callejón donde durante la batalla campal de los mods contra la policía y los rockers estuvo follando con Steph, quien después se iría con otro amigo suyo. Entra en él y mirando hacia arriba, con una rotación de la camara puede observar entre las dos paredes el cielo, cada vez más estrecho.

- Choque (bell boy): Sale del callejón y torna ilusionado al encontrar la moto de As de oros, uno de los líderes del movimiento pero para su desencanto, lo ve en un hotel vestido de botones , aceptando las ordenes de la autoridad contra la que se rebelaban los mods. La realidad llega e indignado le grita y sale corriendo.

- Aceptación (i’ve had enough): Decide coger la moto de Sting y se dirige a los acantilados de Beachy Head donde duda que es lo que debe hacer. Finalmente con la angustia controlada, se dirige acelerando la moto hacia el acantilado y lanza allí sus ideales, su esencia de juventud rebelde: Secuencia final y desenlace de Quadrophenia

El suicidio de Jimmy

Se ha hablado mucho de la última escena de la película sobre si Jimmy se suicida o no. Es un debate esteril puesto que en la primera escena del film se ve que vuelve andando desde el precipicio. Incluso en la escena final sólo se ve caer la moto y además existe un corte con el protagonista en lo alto del acantilado:  El supuesto suicidio de Jimmy

Se trata simplemente de una metáfora en la que el protagonista mata sus ideales de juventud, el estilo mod, impulsado por las decepciones con los amigos y las chicas y los problemas en el trabajo y la familia, el choque entre lo que creyó que sería o debía ser y lo que fue.

En definitiva, una película que hay que ver si no se está consumiendo Prozac.

Filme lançado em  1979,  tem como protagonista o personagem Jimmy Cooper, em 1964, integrante de uma guangue de Mods. O filme retrata a rivalidade entre Mods e Rockers. Um feriado de três dias que desencadeia um grande confronto entre as duas gangues acaba se tornando definitivo para Jimmy  que vê sua vida desabar, sendo expulso de casa , perdendo seu emprego e a garota que gostava.

O filme, baseado num dos  álbuns da banda The Who,que tem ótima trilha sonora assinada por Pete Townshend, influenciou uma geração de jovens  e chegou a ser considerado um dos melhores filmes britânicos de todos os tempos.

Recently I watched some AMAZING movies. Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Nuns on the Run, which I have on Netflix.

The Wall was very intresting. I really have no words for it… but it was really good! Pink Floyd is an awesome band. And I love movies that are based off of albums like The Who’s Tommy and Quadrophenia and Paul McCartney’s  Give My Regards to Broad Street. There was one part in the movie that I thought was a bit weird. When the kids were singing the song Another Brick in the Wall, they would fall into a meat grinder and they were wearing really weird masks. And Pink shaved off his eyebrows!! JELOUS!! Yes, I want to shave off my eyebrows. I think that it’s unnessesary hair and if you don’t want something, then just get rid of it. And the ending was pretty… intresting. A bizzar movie, but well worth watching!

Nuns on the Run was really funny!!! I LOVED it! I watched it because Eric Idle (from Monty Python!) was in it and as it turns out, the guy that plays Hagred? from the Harry Potter movies is in it and George Harrison is one of the producers. One of my favorite parts was when Eric Idle said, “I’m trying to commit a horrable crime! So go away!”. I love Eric Idle. He’s really awesome! So, two mobbsters steal money and are running from the cops so they dress up as nuns. Awesome!

As for the new book that I was gonna get? And the winner is… According to The Rolling Stones. I know that wasn’t one of my three choices, but I really wanted to read it for the longest time and the library FINALLY had it, so I snached it up!
