<p>I feel like I&#8217;ve dropped the ball big time on this one. I was one of the beta users almost a year ago when this was first created but, I was using a Windows PC. I&#8217;ve played it several times on my PC and had some good old fashion fun. Now, it is available for Mac and Linux users. The plugin downloads quickly and installs easily. The content is then installed through your web browser of choice and that takes several minutes but, is worth the wait. For those of you who are looking to play Quake 3 Area online in your web browser, look no further. I haven&#8217;t played a FPS that is this fast paced since well, Quake 3 Arena. Be prepared to take some time to get your fragging legs back. I get really good performance in Firefox but, the web site says that it works with Safari too. Click on the link below to sign up and create a FREE Quake Live account and start fragging in no time at all.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>El día 23 de este mes la web de la ESL nos dió una agradable sorpresa a los jugadores de Quake Live, y es que han anunciado el inicio de una competición <strong>muy hardcore </strong>de Quake Live, que es bastante compleja.</p>
<p>La competición se llama Intel Game On, y se organizará de la siguiente forma:</p>
<p>Habrá 8 copas a nivel nacional, en la cual se conseguirán puntos, y los 16 mejores jugadores que hayan disputado las copas, disputarán la final nacional (seguramente se hará en Lan, aún no hay detalles), y el ganador de la final irá a la fase mundial, en la que jugarán los mejores jugadores de cada país.</p>

<p>Zunächst war dieses, durch Werbung finanzierte Browsergame als Quake Zero konzipiert. Bis auf den Namen hat sich jedoch kaum etwas am geplanten Prinzip geändert. Seit Februar 2009 ist Quake Live für jedermann verfügbar. Um neben der grossen Quakegemeinschaft auch andere für diesen schnellen Ego-Shooter zu begeistern, wurde vor allem darauf geachtet, dass die technischen Anforderungen möglichst gering sind. Es basiert auf der Quake III Arena Engine , die mittlerweile 10 Jahre alt ist.  So kann man auch mit seinem Arbeitsrechner problemlos die Mittagspausen verdaddeln.</p>
<p>Inhaltlich hat es nur kleinere Veränderungen gegeben. So wurde in Quake Live auf Gewaltdarstellungen wie z.B. Blut verzichtet. Es stehen dem Spieler fünf verschiedene Spielmodi zur Verfügung. Neben Capture the Flag, Clan Arena, Team Death Match und Free for All, kann man sich im Modus Duel beweisen.<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-562" title="Quelle: http://www.the3dzone.de/wp-content/bilder/quake_live_190208-1.jpg" src="http://verdic.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/quake_live_190208-1.jpg?w=300" alt="Quelle: http://www.the3dzone.de/wp-content/bilder/quake_live_190208-1.jpg" width="300" height="150" /></p>
<p>Mir hat vor allem die Serversuche gefallen, die sich auf die Erfahrung des Spielers einstellt. Diese wird durch das Tutorial ermittelt und berücksichtig dann die erspielten Statistiken des Spielers. So werden einem dann im Servermenü bestimmte Server empfohlen, die den eigenen Fähigkeiten nahe kommen. Hier können  auch bestimmte Spielmodi oder Spiele in denen sich gerade Freunde aus der Friendslist befinden, bevorzugt angezeigt werden. Die eigenen Statistiken,  die von anderen Spielen oder internationale Leaderboards lassen sich jederzeit einsehen. Auch die Informationen der letzten gespielten Partien lassen sich nachschlagen. So ist es möglich auch Tage nach einem gespielten Match, Spieler mit denen man gerne gespielt hat zur eigenen Freundesliste hinzuzufügen.</p>

Don&#8217;t think this deserves me geek cred because it doesn&#8217;t &#8211; sadly Quake Live is the first version of Quake I have ever played. I&#8217;m not a cool hardcore fan whose followed the series since the original. And I say that without sarcasm.</p>
<p>However, even in my mind, skill and addiction to playing an online game is no cause for respect. If anything, in the real world, probably the opposite. However, Quake Live has a nice way of making its players feel better for becoming socially retarded introverts. I recently recieved this award after a pretty intense game where I likely dominated:</p>

<p><em>Quake II</em>? As in the one that came out in 1997? You&#8217;d better believe it. People probably aren&#8217;t buying <em>Quake II</em> anymore, but I still want to put my impressions of the demo up&#8230; just because.</p>
<p>So, first off, why did I bother to play the <em>Quake II</em> PC demo? Well, I saw it on Steam today and thought I&#8217;d give it a look. I&#8217;ve been reading a book lately about id Software, and the <em>Quake</em> series is one of the things they are most famous for. <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/"><em>Quake Live</em></a>, the free-to-play, multiplayer-only browser adaptation of the series is the only <em>Quake </em>game I had played, and I wanted to change that with this demo.</p>
<p>My immediate impressions were, &#8220;Seriously? <em>These</em> are the graphics?&#8221; Everything had a very pixelated look, even though all the environments and characters were in total 3D. The next thing I noticed were the controls&#8230; specifically how the arrow keys were used to move and W, A, S, and D did nothing. At first I couldn&#8217;t find a way to look up or down, so I assumed <em>Quake II</em> would be like <em>Doom</em>, where your shots hit enemies as long as you directly face them, regardless of their elevation. That thought got thrown out the window as soon as some demented looking thing started shooting at me from below a staircase, and my shots aimed towards it but not directly at it did nothing. So, messing around in the options menu, I turned on the &#8220;free aim&#8221; (why exactly would that not always be on?) and changed the button configuration to match my preference &#8211; specifically, using W and S to move and A and D to strafe.</p>
<p>Now that I could finally navigate the game, I could actually focus on the action at hand. The demo consisted of only one level (not counting the multiplayer portion; I tried to find a server to log on to, but of course I didn&#8217;t find one) split up into a few different sections. The location was standard id affair &#8211; a base on some distant planet overrun with demonic, heavily armed bad guys. I couldn&#8217;t tell exactly what the story was despite a staticy radio voice buzzing in my ear the whole time, but I did appreciate the atmosphere the ambient noises created. I never felt scared or anything like that, but there was a sense of being in only a small part of a larger conflict, as distant explosions could be heard in the background.</p>
<p>The guns were cool, but some felt a little overpowered. At the beginning each enemy posed a threat because I had nothing but a pistol, but once I started finding things like the chaingun and the super shotgun, everybody took just one or two hits before exploding into bloody, 1997-quality gibs. Even the boss at the very end went down easily, so I can&#8217;t help but wonder whether all the weapons in the demo were put there just so people could see what was available in the real game, or if they are really supposed to be there. If the latter is true, then <em>Quake II</em>&#8217;s main challenge comes from simply trying to find out where to go next. I had a couple times where I was confused, but ultimately I was able to find the right path, so in the demo at least, navigation isn&#8217;t too much of an issue for <em>Quake II</em>.</p>
<p>When I reached the end after about 20 minutes, I immediately uninstalled the demo. It wasn&#8217;t bad, but it was dated. I certainly wasn&#8217;t going to go back to it time and time again, anyway. If you&#8217;re interested in retro 3D shooters as I am at the moment, go ahead and download the demo from Steam or some other place on the internet. For those wishing to stick to a better version of <em>Quake</em>, I say go play <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/"><em>Quake Live</em>.</a></p>

<p>Hoy, en mi primera entrada &#8220;seria&#8221; en el blog, me apetece hablar de un juego que está dando mucho que hablar últimamente, por si el título de la entrada y el Banner que está encima de este texto no te son suficiente para averiguar de que hablamos, pues te lo diré yo: <strong>Quake Live</strong>.</p>
<p>Y muchos se preguntarán ¿qué es eso? Pues es ni más ni menos que <strong>una copia de Quake 3 oficial y gratis, jugable desde un navegador web</strong>, y muchos se creerán que por ser gratis y de navegador será un mal juego, pero no, está muy logrado y es bastante entretenido.</p>
<p>Es prácticamente igual que en todos los juegos de la famosísima saga Quake: Matar (fraggear) otros jugadores con un gran arsenal de armas y capacidad de movimiento a tu disposición, ya sea contra jugadores controlados por la máquina, que contra gente del todo mundo, en equipo, o todos contra todos.</p>
<p>Lo único necesario para jugar es registrar una cuenta (que no se tarda más de 5 minutos) y instalar el plug-in del juego para el navegador (en Firefox al menos funciona de maravilla el juego), y actualizar tal (que por cierto, la actualización me dio problemas, tenía que estar dándole todo el rato a F5 porque se paraba).</p>
<p>Según se instala el plugin, mientras actualiza el juego se puede pasar un rato jugando en la fase de entrenamiento, donde una jugadora controlada por la máquina <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">con más pecho que cabeza</span> te enseñará lo básico del juego y determinará tu nivel de destreza, para así la web aconsejarte servidores de gente con la misma experiencia que tú.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Era <strong>agosto</strong>, faceva molto caldo, ed io non ero in vacanza. Ero <strong>al PC</strong>, come sempre, a caccia di notizie. Letto l&#8217;annuncio su <strong>ESL</strong> della <strong>SteelSeries Summer Cup &#8216;09</strong> di <em>Quake Live</em> mi iscrissi e, dopo qualche settimana, si chiusero le iscrizioni: <strong>due iscritti al torneo</strong>, io e <strong>Frusten</strong>, giocatore di <em>TrackMania</em> che aveva deciso di provare la sua prima esperienza a più alti livelli. Solo che, quella volta, mancavano davvero i partecipanti d&#8217;alto livello. Mi aspettavo un&#8217;affluenza maggiore, con i veri pro della scena a battersi, ma questi, a quanto pare, erano tutti partiti per il mare o la montagna.</p>
<p>Così, io, rimasto solo contro un neoarrivato giocatore, una promessa, mi trovavo a poter vincere la mia prima competizione di <em>Quake Live</em>. Non che abbia vinto molto in altre discipline, ma certo a <em>FIFA 08</em> e <em>Unreal Tournament III</em> avevo già ottenuto degli ottimi piazzamenti in tornei di buon livello. Non è mai bello vincere contro i più deboli senza faticare, senza sudarsi la vittoria, però questa volta era una buona occasione per guadagnare un <strong>award di ESL</strong> e, si sa, gli achievements li hanno inventati studiando la community dei netgamer, ed io ne faccio parte. </p>
<p>Il giorno della partita mi ero preparato come al solito, tra l&#8217;altro era un periodo in cui avevo moltissimo tempo per allenarmi, perciò giocavo in continuazione per non venire beffato da un avversario fresco di ore di allenamenti. La sera, quando <strong>Frusten</strong> mi contatto e mi diede il suo <strong>nickname</strong> di <em>Quake Live</em>, scoprii che però lui non aveva ancora giocato quella settimana. Vinsi, ovviamente, con un divario enorme. </p>
<p>A distanza di un mese, ESL ha pubblicato <a href="http://www.esl.eu/it/quakelive/news/101468/SteelSeries-Summer-Cup-09-Vince-Kumo-/">la notizia sul proprio portale</a> ed ho richiesto i premi: <strong>Premium Account di 1 mese</strong> e Award correlato. Essendo newser di ProGaming Italia e, inoltre, redattore di ESL Italia col ruolo di scrittore di p/review, <strong>ho deciso di dare nuovamente in beneficienza il Premium Account</strong>. Non è infatti la prima volta che faccio una cosa del genere, tempo fa ne aveva vinto uno <strong>Natul</strong>.</p>

Si tratta nientemeno che di una competizione che si propone di rilanciare gli <strong>FPS da duello</strong> (quali <em>Quake</em>) nei tornei più prestigiosi. Con questo tour, l&#8217;Association of Gaming Professionals non vuole far altro che dare un segnale forte alla community. <em>Quake Live</em> è il gioco giusto per rilanciare gli FPS 1v1? A mio avviso, <strong>sì</strong>. Speriamo solo che questo tentativo serva davvero a qualcosa, perchè finora i montepremi dedicati al nuovo capitolo della serie Quake sono scarsi, e non siamo ai tempi in cui s&#8217;investiva solamente in un torneo di <em>Quake 3</em>. Non bisogna far altro che sperare. Ed iscriversi, a patto di pagare la quota d&#8217;iscrizione di circa<strong> 30 $</strong>: un vero controsenso per un tour che vuole rilanciare qualcosa di un po&#8217; spento, no?</p>

<p>Nos últimos tempos, a industria dos games está gostando mesmo de debater, e o principal assunto é a publicidade dentro de videogames, mas um estudo abalou todas as opiniões, não a minha. Um grupo de investigadores da <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Europa e América </span></strong>chegaram a uma conclusão que pra mim é até lógica, a conclusão deles foram de que os jogadores, nós no caso, se lembram muito mais da publicidade de jogos violentos do que de jogos sem qualquer violência. Mas tenho que admitir que as vezes isso é superado, um exemplo <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Little Big Planet</span></strong>, veja o sucesso que ele faz sem qualquer violência.</p>
<p>Para chegarem a estes resultados, vários investigadores da <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Universidade de Luxemburgo</span></strong> criaram um jogo chamado <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">AdRacer</span> </strong>que colocava os jogadores para atingirem letreiros publicitários. Existia uma versão violenta desse mesmo jogo onde os jogadores atropelavam peões enquanto o vidro do carro ficava coberto de sangue. Assim que terminavam, os jogadores lembravam-se melhor das publicidades da versão violenta do jogo, ou seja, todo mundo saia de lá com a mente um pouco pertubada.</p>

<p>Contudo, um dos investigadores lançou o aviso de que a introdução de publicidade em jogos violentos pode ter um efeito contrário ao desejado.</p>
<p>Para se ter uma idéia, mesmo que com lucros da publicidade em jogos ultrapasse os <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">600 milhões</span></strong> de dólares em 2013, a <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">id Software</span></strong> já anunciou que a publicidade em jogo não vai conseguir manter <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Quake Live</span></strong>, então para salva-lo só um milagre, e isso prova que as vezes essa publicidade pode não ser tão vantajosa, mas que em pelo menos 92% ela é isso eu garanto viu.</p>

<p>    * Added cg_deadBodyDarken  (default = 0) Toggling this cvar on will darken &#8216;bright&#8217; players as soon as they become corpses.<br />
    * Added cg_deadBodyColor  (default = 0&#215;101010FF) Altering this cvar allows you to customize the color applied to dead bright bodies when cg_deadBodyDarken is enabled.<br />
    * Changed shotgun pattern to use 20 pellets in a diffused 3 ring pattern, each dealing 5 damage for a total of 100 damage.<br />
    * Added cg_smokeRadius_NG  (default = 16) Lowering the value of this cvar will scale the radius of the smoke puffs drawn in the nailgun trails. A value of 0 will entirely disable the smoke trails.<br />
    * Added cg_bubbleTrail  (default = 1) Toggling this cvar off disables the underwater bubble trails drawn behind many bullets and projectiles while underwater.<br />
    * Removed cg_noProjectileTrails due to the addition of the cg_smokeRadius_NG and cg_bubbleTrails.<br />
    * Added cg_waterWarp  (default = 1) Toggling this cvar off disables the minor under-water warping effected that exists when submerged underwater. The effect has little impact on gameplay but can be induce disorientation in some players.<br />
    * Added cg_zoomScaling  (default = 1) Toggling this cvar off disables the zooming in / zooming out scaling effect that is used as a transition between your cg_fov and cg_zoomfov; causing the +zoom to act as a quick snap to and from the zoomed fov.<br />
    * Added cg_zoomToggle  (default = 0) Toggling this cvar on alters the behavior of +zoom such that a single key press will enable zooming and a repeated keystroke disables zooming, no longer requiring players to hold the key down while zooming.<br />
    * Added cg_zoomSensitivity  (default = 1) The value of this cvar is multiplied to our current zoom sensitivity, allowing the user to increase or decrease their sensitivity while zoomed. A value of 0 will revert the zoomSensitivity code to the Q3 legacy code that was previously available in QuakeLive.<br />
    * Added cg_drawFragMessages  (default = 1) Toggling this cvar off disables the &#8216;You Fragged So-and-So&#8217; centerprint message from drawing on your screen. The shorthand obituary will still print to the HUD to make note of any kills.<br />
    * Added cg_buzzerSound  (default = 1) Toggling this cvar off disables the end-game buzzer sound in all gametypes.<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Gerade muss ich in Nostalgie schwelgen. Es gab mal so ne Zeit, da ging man zum Zocken hauptsächlich auf LAN-Partys. Hauptsächlich deshalb, weil die Kosten für einen spieletauglichen ISDN-Anschluss meist das Budget jedes Schülers oder Studenten sprengten. Und mit Modems und den daraus resultierenden 500er Pings wars auch kein Spass. Ein Game, welches die allgemeine Counterstrike-Mania immer ein wenig durcheinander gebracht hat, war Quake 3 Arena. Eigentlich ein krankes, sinnloses Geballere, aber doch irgendwie fordernd.</p>
<p>Anfang August bin ich nun auf <a href="http://www.quakelive.com">Quake Live</a> gestoßen. Quasi Quake 3 spielbar im Browser. Ich war am Anfang sehr skeptisch, da man zuerst ein Plugin installieren muss, das zu dieser Zeit nur für Windows verfügbar war. Nachdem jetzt das Linux-Plugin auch da ist, fange ich langsam an, die Genialität dieser Idee zu begreifen. Einfach auf einer Website ein paar Einstellungen machen, sein Profil verwalten, etc. Mit einem Klick ist man dann im Fullscreen und es geht richtig ab. Das Spielgefühl, die Smoothness ist nicht vom alten Quake 3 zu unterscheiden. Allerdings tummeln sich auch viele Pro-Gamer, die wohl seit 10 Jahren nix anderes zocken <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' />  Im Server-Browser kann man aber Server mit solchen Spielern schnell erkennen.</p>

I&#8217;ve been trying, I mean <em>reeeeeally trying</em>, the last few days to get into the free-to-play-now-on-Mac <em>Quake Live</em>, but I just can&#8217;t do it.</p>
<p>Overall, I&#8217;m just not a PC gamer. To me there is nothing intuitive about hitting buttons on a keyboard to run around and shoot, and there never will be. The simple act of moving in the space feels blocky and cumbersome, and having to concentrate on the WASD keys while trying to frag fools in a game that is this fast and twitchy leaves me very irritated, and very often dead.</p>
<p>The game itself is well ported though, and it reminds me of 2001 when we would play <em>Quake II</em> on N64 at Tyler&#8217;s house while just growing out of <em>GoldenEye</em> (at least I think that&#8217;s what it was. I can&#8217;t be expected to remember eight whole years ago). In the browser, it looks sharp (even in fullscreen), runs smooth, and is easy to jump right into a game. I think the friend system is a little buggy right now though, because even though I kept accepting his friend request, I just couldn&#8217;t hook up with Russ.</p>
<p>Maybe with some friends to frag in the room, I might have a little more fun with this, until then, I&#8217;m going to avoid any more one-kill and thirty-something death frag fests.</p>

<p>Единствено при Mac OS X играта все още върви само под Safari заради някакво бъгче, но следващият ъпдейт ще добави поддръжка и на Firefox.<br />

<p>1 plugin and you can play, which is quite awesome I believe.</p>
<p>Add me, I play CTF and Any deathmatch mode&#8230; Xtr4M1nty is my name.</p>
<p>Top weapons:</p>
<p>1) Best for newbs the Rocket Launcher sees wide use and is extremely powerful and funnily enough accurate too!</p>
<p>2) My favorite, the Shotgun is powerful for speed-warriors and CQC guys.</p>
<p>3) Lightning Gun, Awesome for Non-Camp Snipers.</p>
<p>Styles:</p>
<p>Speed Warrior: An under-rated, chaotic, crazy, fast paced shooting style which uses RLs and Shotguns. Basically you run around as fast as you can grabbing frags with the Shotgun or camping then shooting thier RL and bolting to the other end of the map.They are like flies&#8230;.Pesky&#8230;Swat &#8216;em as soon as you can. (I think i just slagged myself by calling myself a fly, <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':P' class='wp-smiley' />  lol )</p>
<p>Treehugger: A rather good camping style where you hug walls and only do a run-around of the map if you need health,energy or arent getting any traffic to blow to shreds&#8230;Shotgun and Lightning Guns are the best for this style.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Quake Live is, well, live.]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[Quake Live, a free browser-based version of Quake III Arena, went into public beta on February 24th ]]></description>

<i><a href="http://www.quakelive.com/">Quake Live</a></i>, a free browser-based version of <i>Quake III Arena</i>, went into public beta on February 24th of this year (my birthday, don&#8217;t forget the presents next time) and has been available to play on Macs since yesterday.  Never one to turn a free thing down, I tried it out.  You set up a quick profile, and then play a 10-minute placement match so that when you play online you are up against people of the same skill level.  Considering <i>Quake III Arena</i> has been out for ten years, I&#8217;m happy to walk into a match and not get slaughtered.  From there, you can either play online or against bots, which is great.  Bots should be in every FPS game, if you ask me.</p>
<p>The game is fast and simple, and I actually played it for a few weeks about six years ago, so it felt pretty damn good to play it again.  This is the era of computer-based FPSes that I like best.  Not because they&#8217;re the best, but because they run well on my non-gaming computer.  I also really like the idea of just jumping on a website that has a long and faithful community and popping off a few frags, and then going right back to google image searching for adorable puppy photos.</p>
