To describe this game as the long awaited sequel to MW1 is an exercise in Understatement which would

To describe this game as the long awaited sequel to MW1 is an exercise in Understatement which would put the most brazen of snollygosters to shame. Even the normally cold and detached Green Gamer was shaking with child-like excitement and wonder as he tore the game disk from its green casing and fired it into the eagerly awaiting Xbox 360.

Initial reactions – awesomeness. Cool intro sequence (not as cool as the first one but still quite cool). Awesome single player missions and graphics so realistic you almost feel like you’re really there, murdering people left, right and centre with a dizzying selection of automatic weapons. But you know what, maybe it was over-hyped in the media, or maybe I over-hyped it in my mind, but I was left feeling a little underwhelmed by this game’s single player mode. I realise and appreciate that there is only so much a developer can do with the basic premise of the FPS, but still I felt like MW2, tasteless gimickry aside, just gives us more of the same old rubbish we see in every other game of this type.

But then, I kinda knew I would play this game mostly for the multiplayer mode. And boy, Infinity Ward have produced a slick, twitchy and exciting multiplayer experience. Old favourites like the Kill-Cam are there, as well as power-ups for kill streaks and player ranks. The maps are, of course, excellently designed and look superb.

Thing is, MW2 costs around 55 euro. I downloaded Battlefield 1943 (a remake of the old PC shooter BF1942) for 12 bucks. And it beats MW2 hands down in the mulitplayer department. Even though its set in WWII, it makes for a better paced and strategic feeling game. In Battlefield you can comandeer tanks, jeeps even fighter aircraft to fight in and from. In MW2 its just you on your feet. In Battlefield, the battle sways back and forth as teams capture and lose various checkpoints. You just dont feel that in MW2, its all just a bit Quake 2. Nice graphics but damn deathmatch sure gets boring.

Anyways, it all comes down to this : If I could somehow travel back in time, I would tell my past self to avoid this disappointing game and to continue to love and enjoy Battlefield. Or to forget it all and go play some WoW, which is always great advice at any time!

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

Some software is so good is makes you want to buy hardware so you can run it best. The classic exam

Some software is so good is makes you want to buy hardware so you can run it best. The classic example is Visicalc which is responsible for making the Apple ][ successful. Over the years a few software apps have been compelling enough that I bought hardware for them:

AppleWriter -> 80 column card - The original Apple ][ could only render a 40 character wide, uppercase display. However, one of the first WYSIWYG word processors, AppleWriter supported an 80 column card. This was a card you'd plug into a slot in the back of the Apple that will let it render 80 column, mixed-case text. It was a must for word processing.

Doom -> Gravis Ultrasound - Doom was the breakout 3D FPS shooter. It also had awesome sound support – spatial audio with a kickass sound track. The best way to render all that audio was the Gravis Ultrasound. It had really fine sounding midi soundbanks to make the distorted electric guitars sound like it came from a NiN album. I can still remember with great fondness the soundtrack for Episode 1, Level 1:

Quake – > 3DFx Voodoo – the first gaming 3D accelerator (remember video passthrough cables)- all of a sudden 3D FPS games could render at 25 Frames per second.

It has been a while since I’ve been engaged enough with a piece of software to buy some hardware for it. Sure I’ve upgraded memory and video cards to run a new game, but those were natural upgrade stepping stones aligned with the release of software. However, now, once again, I find myself with a piece of software that makes me want to upgrade my hardware in order that I can get the most out of the software. The software is the Spotify iPhone app.

I installed the Spotify app on my 1st gen iPhone yesterday and have been playing with it all day. There’s something about having 5 million songs available in my pocket ready to listen to that is just indescribable. On the drive home, I listened to the WeAreHunted playlist, During dinner time with my 14 year old daughter we listened to the Glee soundtrack. On my after dinner walk I listened to some tracks that I hadn’t listen to since High School. It is quite an interesting feeling to be out in the middle of nowhere, have a song come to mind, and moments later be listening to it. And so I want more. My feeble 1st gen iPhone with its edge network doesn’t get the music fast enough for me, so I have to rely on Wifi syncing. Plus the paltry memory size leaves me with less than 2GB for the local Spotify audio cache. Perhaps enough for a thousand songs, but I want more! And so I shall be upgrading my iPhone soon – the 3G and 32GB footprint will help me take full advantage of this wonderful app.

I’m in a hotel room in Dundee just now getting ready for the first ever NEoN Digital Arts Festival which kicks off at 8:30 am tomorrow. The event is a celebration of Dundee, which is now deemed as a centre of video game development excellence in the UK and will involve tons of brilliant events, speaker slots from key digital media figures and of course a world-exclusive multiplayer hands-on of the Crackdown 2 multiplayer!

I’ll be live tweeting from the event at my Twitter feed – @davescook – as well as blogging whenever I get a spare five or ten minutes and you can also check out the official event programme here to see what all the fuss is about.

The speaker sessions for Friday and Saturday in full:

Chris Van Der Kuyl, CEO of Brightsolid and owner of the popular ‘I used to fancy you in high school’ networking site Friends Reunited will open with a keynote address.

Colin Macdonald from Crackdown developer Realtime Worlds will be discussing game development and showing off the incredibly exciting new MMORPG All Points Bulletin.

Bud Luckey, the iconic Pixar character designer and creator of the Sesame Street animated shorts will be holding a rare Q&A sessions, so Toy Story fans will NOT want to miss out on this coverage as the lovely gentleman created Buzz and Woody among others.

Colin Anderson from amazing digital TV and console game developer Denki, creators of forthcoming Xbox Live Arcade party game Quarrel (which every single one of you should buy on release – think Scrabble, meets Advance Wars and Worms!) will be talking about all things games.

Alice Taylor, commissioning editor at Channel 4 and a member of the first UK professional Quake clan will be giving a superb chat on digital goodness, but what exactly I’m still not sure. She’s a great speaker though so this is guaranteed to be a good session.

Simon Parsons at the BBC, single handedly revolutionised children’s programming at CBBC and integrated digital elements to make tv better for tykes everywhere for years to come. Something of a legend in these parts and extremely up on his tech. Digital folk, this session is for you.

Tommy Tallarico, the incredibly energetic front man from Video Games Live, the world-famous video game soundtrack orchestra will be talking to attendees about the role of music in video games. NEoN closes on Sunday with the fist European tour date of Video Games Live! for 2009. Good times.

Plus plenty more to follow. Keep up to date with all the speakers and events here and don’t be afraid to chip in with comments.

I am a PC gamer. I am a huge fan of COD4, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I think it’s the best FPS PC game ever released and its sales figures back up that claim. As with all games of this genre, while the single player experience is fun, the multiplayer mode is why you buy the game and what gives the game its replay value. In this regard, COD4 is awesome, absolutely without peer, IMO.

So, as you might imagine, ever since they announced a release date for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, I have been waiting in eager anticipation. Now, imagine my surprise when it turns out that Activision/Infinity Ward, in MW2, has stripped out all the multiplayer features that made COD4 such a success. Not only is this a major multiplayer experience downgrade (which they’re charging $10 more for), but it seems that this was done deliberately, as a slap in the face to the PC gaming community!

Modern Warfare 2: The Battleground for PC Gaming?

Every once in a while (every 10 minutes or so), the death knell of PC gaming is cried out by someone or other. And once in a while, it seems like they might be right. PC gaming is not, however, going anywhere. With such an open platform that allows anyone to get in without buying a dev kit, there will always be something to play. Nonetheless, the release of Modern Warfare 2, to me, signals one of the loudest shots fired from the bow of a major publisher against PC gaming.

Freelancer Mitch Dyer commented on his twitter feed earlier today that he was ranked one million something in Modern Warfare, meaning that in just 12 hours, the game has sold over a million copies on one platform. Any doubt that this game would be huge should be a distant memory by now.

The two console versions are pretty much feature-identical, as far as I know. It comes down to preferences for controllers and online service. Beside that, they’re the same game.

But then there’s the PC version.

The thing about PC gamers is, they expect certain things out of their games, things that have always been there as far back as Quake. First and foremost is the exclusion of support for dedicated servers. Back in the Quake II days, I remember logging into the same server (Nostromo) every night over the summer to play deathmatch over dial-up. On the 360 and PS3, matchmaking is an accepted part of the platform.

To not have that, as little an inconvenience as it may be in reality, seems like a major affront to PC gamers. Having the option to get familiar with a server and the group that shows up there has always been one of the benefits of the game, along with having the option to vote users off the server if they’re being disruptive without having to wait for an admin to get to it. Also, when the game isn’t hosted by a player, no one gets the home field advantage and no one affects the game when they pull the plug mid-match.

Of course on the publisher side, you get problems like servers with weird settings that encourage cheating and most importantly, servers that don’t verify that your copy of the game is legal. That’s the big thing. By having the entire online game run through a service, you force all your users to verify their copies of the game if they want to play online. Even if it means no clan home servers and worse, no local play.

Another missing aspect is the lack of console access. The best way to describe a PC gamer, to me, is to compare them to those car nuts that build hot rods from scratch. PC gamers build their systems, know the specs of every part in their computer, and have everything set-up just the way they like. Check out their World of Warcraft interfaces when they get to higher levels, and you’ll see something that barely looks like the same game. Similarly, some gamers like to have their shooters set-up just-so. Tweaking the field of view settings and sensitivity of the controls are things gamers expect to have the option to do as necessary. Instead, Infinity Ward has told gamers that they’d like them to play the game as they designed it, regardless of any user preferences that may not conform to what the publisher thinks is important.

Other limitations include restricting the maps to 9v9 (when the first Modern Warfare allowed games with 16v16) and the exclusion of the lean move, in the name of not having to recalibrate the maps. That lower team limit is a major thing for all the clans that formed on Modern Warfare servers trying to make the jump to the sequel. Split the team up? Have Alpha and Bravo teams? Not play the new one?

I won’t even mention that the PC version of the game is selling for the same price—$59.99—as the console equivalents. Oops, I just mentioned it.

All this together makes me think Infinity Ward/Activision is excluding expected features in hopes of discouraging PC users. Maybe not discouraging them, but taking away many of the advantages that have drawn PC users in the past while doing as much as possible to combat piracy. Of course, where there’s a will there’s a way, and there’s always a will in PC gaming, and I won’t be surprised if we see dedicated servers with 16v16 games within a few months.

Whether the mad geniuses of the mod world come up with a solution, Activision’s decision strikes me as a very clear message that PC games—or at least hardcore PC gamers—do not play a large role in their equation. While indie gaming and MMORPGs thrive, I have a feeling that some of the bigger publishers are going to give the PC less and less attention when they have a much more reliable option available.

Needless to say, I’m extremely dissapointed and conflicted by this fiasco. I was really looking forward to playing this game but, on the other hand, on principle, I don’t want to financially reward Activision/Infinity Ward for their blatantly arrogant and hostile treatment of loyal PC gamers. They expect us to pay more for an inferior product after we’ve already seen that they’re capable of putting out an excellent multiplayer game like COD4. It sucks.

/for now, I guess I’m going to sit back, think about it some more, and wait and see how this controversy plays itself out

spiele ich seit ewig am PC. Entspannt mich herrlichst. Was spielt ihr?

¡puedes llevártelo a cualquier parte!

¡Jugando a OpenArena!
