Well that’s one college course finished. Hopefully, if I haven’t messed up, I will soon

Well that’s one college course finished. Hopefully, if I haven’t messed up, I will soon actually have a teaching qualification – PTLLS. That’s quite a big step actually. Well for me it is, not sure any potential employers feel the same way, but there you are.

Speaking of potential employers, they seem to be a bit thin on the ground lately. Hopefully it’s just a lull in anticipation of the Christmas break and there will be a big demand in the new year. Having said all that, I have had a little flurry of applications in the last few days, 7 or 8 of them I think. Before that, I was actually reduced to applying for a job in a bank! How low can you go? Anyway, I do have an interview on Wednesday that sounds hopeful (not at the bank!), and possibly one on Tuesday, depending on what happens at a meeting on Monday. I’ll be doing a few miles next week!

Christmas is looming large on the horizon now, something to look forward to. We usually have a good day, just the family. The four of us will sit down to dinner together and have a good laugh, eat lots of good food and then chill out before it’s time for Dr Who. Then on Boxing Day we will meet up with family at my sister’s house and eat yet more food! There will also be another exchange of presents, so the kids effectively get two Christmas Days – which is fun!

We’re away for New Year in the caravan, so I think that I will take a good weeks break from job searching, hopefully a new year, a new start and a new qualification will bring about a change of luck!

Anyway, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

CISSP: Gaining and Maintaining Your Certification

The CISSP is the original information security qualification, held to ISO (International Standards O

The CISSP is the original information security qualification, held to ISO (International Standards Organisation) regulations and it remains a globally recognised and highly respected qualification. To achieve CISSP certification you need to pass an examination of 250 multiple choice questions. However, the world of computers does not slow down and programs and systems are forever being updated and replaced. This means that there can be no one-off qualification for Information security.

(ISC)2, the body which created and regulates CISSP certification, understands this need. Every year, every month, computer security needs to advance and so the CISSP qualification needs to be maintained throughout your career. The original certification lasts for three years and after that there are options available to renew and maintain the status.

You could choose to retake the CISSP exam but (ISC)2 have provided an alternative solution in the form of CPEs or Continued Professional Education credits. These can be earned in various ways including: attending online seminars and security conferences, publishing articles or books on the subject of security and participating in self-study courses.

(ISC)2 also allows people to help maintain their CISSP certification by submitting reviews for books on information security to their website. This is simple and easy and, if your review is accepted, you automatically gain CPEs.

You can even receive credits for subscribing to an information security magazine, providing training for other people on information security or volunteering to help charitable organisations maintain the security of their computer systems.

None of this is any good without the original qualification, though, which is just as easy to study for. There are many books and computer training courses available for CISSP qualifications. If you are looking for a way to stand out in information security and you have five years of experience in the area, then you could qualify for CISSP certification. If you think that this certification could help you there are DVD training and online courses available to help you study for the exam.

To find CBT options for CISSP certification, have a look at www.cvision.co.uk, which has a range of computer based training courses, not only for CISSP certification, but also Microsoft qualifications.

We invited Will Rigby, an AQA Functional Maths examiner, to tell us how teachers are responding to F

We invited Will Rigby, an AQA Functional Maths examiner, to tell us how teachers are responding to Functional. What they like and what they dislike. Will’s been helping to host the recent AQA Launch events, which has given him direct access to teachers’ views. Will also shared a few views of his own:

We have had lots of very positive Heads of Dept (mostly) at the launches who see the value both educationally and morally of what we are trying to achieve… To educate, enthuse, and develop thinking skills for life, rather than teaching solely to a test.

What teachers really fear is that they will be forced to teach to a Functional exam and this will be in their 6 A* to Cs or the school record card. This, of course is a million miles from teaching Mathematics functionally. One always has to remember that teachers are subject to the guidance of Heads, Secretaries of State, county advisors, who are themselves under pressure to deliver one thing… results. And grades. This shifts the emphasis away from preparation for further study, developing logical reasoning, or engaging in mathematical concepts for their own sake.

We’ve been hearing that this situation is bugging teachers most, because many desperately want to develop their classroom teaching in Functional terms but are constrained by the above. I meet so many that welcome Functionality. These are delightful people who teach and care and want the best for their students.

Equally, many staff are temporary or non -specialists and are therefore not confident delivering in a Functional manner.

These then are our stumbling blocks and we need influential people in the public eye supporting teachers in this seed-change and, in particular, getting away from the quick-fix mentality. If league tables were not the priority that they currently are, we could make Functional a more valuable field of study. The rich tasks that can be developed from Functional methods of teaching help the young adult to become more engaged in maths, and in the longer term will yield a significantly more numerate work-force.

As a country we have a great opportunity to re-energise education with the 3 Functional skills….we just need politicians to shout it from the roof tops!”

In our survey we wanted to tease out any scepticism among teachers about Functional Maths, and any r

In our survey we wanted to tease out any scepticism among teachers about Functional Maths, and any reluctance to engage with it. So we asked them to rate factors which might stop their centre from offering Functional.

We’re pleased to report, from Functional’s point of view, that teachers rated these negative factors as far less significant than the positive factors mentioned in our earlier post, below. Here’s a list of the negative factors, and how many teachers rated them important or very important:

26% – “At my Centre we don’t know very much about Functional Maths”

48% – “Functional Maths is no longer a hurdle to achieving Grade C at GCSE”"

36% – “There has been a low pass rate in the Functional Maths Pilot”

13% – “My Centre is not interested in teaching Functional Maths on principle”

22% – “My Centre has not found the Pilot specification and examinations to be a successful way of delivering Functional Maths”

So the stand-out issues are clearly (1) that Functional is no longer a hurdle to Grade C at GCSE (no surprises there…) and (2) the low pass rate in the Pilot exams. Clearly, QCA and the Exam Boards need to address this latter point before specs and SAMs are finalised next April.

We also think Publishers (that’s us, amongst others!) need to do a better job of teaching Functional and supporting teachers. When we look through the books already produced on Functional, we find them very hard to navigate – it’s almost impossible to tell which chapter is teaching which maths topic…

Watch this space over the coming months for more thoughts on publishing Functional resources! Meantime if you have any thoughts on Functional, please send a comment.

All in all, it looks to us that the enthusiasm of teachers for Functional far outweighs the doubts or scepticism. More on this in the next day or two – we’ve invited one of the Functional Pilot examiners, Will Rigby, to write a guest blog. We hear from him that teachers are committed to Functional, if only they didn’t have to teach to the test………..

Well seen as this website is mainly about getting to Kona, I thought I would outline how I actually

Well seen as this website is mainly about getting to Kona, I thought I would outline how I actually plan to achieve that.

Currently I have IM Switzerland lined up for July, which is my main race this season (2009/2010) and then after that race, I go back to uni. Whilst this allows me more training time, it does mean that I will be again lacking an income so my IM races in 2011 are going to be seriously limited. By the looks of it I will probably do IMUK again as it will be the cheapest for me to do. Although it will be my third year racing Ironmans (assuming I stay on track), and the course favours my strengths, chances of qualification are very, very slim. Unless slots increase dramatically, there will be one slot, so I will either need to win my age group, or get extremely lucky with the roll-down, even if I have the perfect race.

After this year, I will (hopefully!) be back in a job earning money, so unless stuff comes up I will move to 2 IMs a year, and will probably race Lanzarote in May, seen as it has a killer bike course and I can cope with heat quite well. This will be my B Ironman race of the year, as main qualification race of 2012 will be IM Wisconsin. This course favours my strong cycling and is not especially hot. More importantly, being a big American race, the number of slots will be 2 or 3 depending on the number of entries in M18-24. This will give me a far greater chance of qualifying, and with another year of IMs in my legs, I should be placing higher up.

If I don’t qualify then, I will return the year later, as well as doing another early season IM. If I do qualify, then obviously 2013 willl be all about IM Hawaii. I will also probably do a Challenge race, possibly Roth. After 2013, I move up an age group! So thats my plan, but plans do never seem to do what you want…

Want to gain a valuable certification in IT and make the most of the ever more important computer as

Want to gain a valuable certification in IT and make the most of the ever more important computer aspects of business? Our MCITP training courses can get you recognised qualifications to work in IT that will stand out to employers and help you get the job you want.
In a world where even the oldest and youngest members of society are computer literate, employers are becoming ever more vigilant when looking at IT certifications. It is no longer enough to know your way around a computer. Having professional and well thought of certifications such as Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) qualifications can give your CV a huge boost and single you out from the competition.

The MCITP certifications provide practical experience and knowledge of areas – such as database and server administration on Microsoft products – that will actually come in useful, not just helping you understand the jargon. They show employers immediately that you don’t just understand the theory; you will also be able to do what they want.

However, a lot of people are caught in a vicious circle: they can’t get the job they want without a new qualification but can’t earn that qualification while working. Classes take time and that’s something you might not have – especially if you’re working full time and looking to retrain. For these reasons, among others, people often choose home learning instead. Unlike evening classes or other class-room and instructor led courses, learning from home is cheaper and more flexible, so you can arrange it around your own schedule and you don’t even need to leave your house so all the issues of travel are eliminated.

Having made the decision to study at home, there are still questions to ask:

•	How do I know the people teaching me know what they’re talking about?
•	Is this the complete course or do I need other supplements?
•	Is what I’m learning up to date?

You can eliminate the risks by choosing to study from DVD or online courses from a well-established and respected company. This will leave you free to study for the MCITP certifications at your own pace and safe in the knowledge that the people helping train you know exactly what they are talking about.

So, why don’t you check out some MCITP Training courses and see how you can use them to gain the qualifications you want in a way that’s convenient for you?

Other computer training courses can be found at www.cvision.co.uk , take a look and maybe sign up for a Microsoft qualification while you’re there.
