Quantum

The Age of Aquarius has given us the gift of a new paradigm called the Laws of Quantum Physics.

Already, like any new idea, it is being divided into two opposing camps of theories.

One, being the camp of the Scientific Quantum Physicists who seek all their answers in the world of the physical. They are the Scientists, Professors, Inventors and Healers who attained all their knowledge in the halls of the great universities.

Their God is the Big Bang theory of Chaos God.

Then there are those, like myself, who belong in the camp of the “Spiritual Quantum Physicists.”

We too may have learned a great deal in the musty halls of the universities. But like myself, we always walked these hallways with the belief in a Creator God. A Grand Architect of the Universe.

I seek the answers to my physical reality in the non-physical world. In the world of the Quantum Ocean, Mind of God.

I know that everything I see around me is only the effect of the energies I carry with me in my own personal belief system. My physical reality is unique to me. No one else can feel, experience, know or even think about my personal, unique individual reality.

It is mine. I am an individual soul, who has ‘blinked out’ of the Quantum Ocean, Mind of God into a new incarnation. I can only experience the energies I have brought with me.

You have your reality. I have mine. We are all connected as part of the Mind of God much as a single drop of water is connected to the ocean it resides in.

It is only when we ‘blink out’ of the Quantum Ocean, Mind of God into a physical Reality, that we “seem” separate.

It is this seemingly separate physical existence that allows each of us to gather the experiences that we need to fulfill our unique destinies. And that is to evolve, raise our levels of consciousness and become more God like.

We can both eat a piece of an apple pie, that has ‘blinked out’ of the Quantum Ocean, but I can not know how it “tastes” to you.

The basic unit of the Quantum Ocean is a “Quantum”(plural: Quanta). According to the Scientific Quantum Physicists it is the smallest unit of any physical object.

Since I am a “Spiritual” Quantum Physicist, I say it is the smallest unit of ‘energy’ contained in the Quantum Ocean. It is not part of a physical world until it ‘blinks out’ of the Quantum Ocean.

My website is about Quantum and I will discuss the differences between Scientific and Spiritual Quantum Physics.

Some of the subjects or the the levels of abstraction of Quantum are: Quantum Physics; Quantum Healing; Quantum Consciousness; Quantum Evolution; Quantum Communication; Quantum Mind; Quantum Theory; Quantum Energy and Quantum Psychology.

I will, to the best of my ability explain these subjects from a “Spiritual Quantum Physics” point of view.

César Lattes (Fonte: Texas A&M University)

O curitibano Césare Mansueto Giulio Lattes, mais conhecido como César Lattes, foi um notável físico brasileiro cujo trabalho teve importantes repercussões internacionais. Fundador do Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas (CBPF), Lattes foi o responsável pela comprovação da existência  da partícula subatômica méson pi.

A descoberta desta partícula rendeu um prêmio Nobel ao japonês Hideki Yukawa, mas foram as experiências realizadas por Lattes na década de 1940 que comprovaram sua existência e provocaram uma revisão dos conceitos físicos sobre a estrutura da matéria.  A revisão do conceito de partícula elementar como algo indivisível levou, mais tarde, ao estudo da estrutura dos prótons, mésons e outras partículas. Assim,  o desenvolvimento da teoria dos quarks tem relação direta com os estudos de Lattes.

Em 1997, Gilberto Gil lançou o disco Quanta. A música que dá nome ao álbum foi uma homenagem a Lattes, ao méson pi e à física. Leia aqui a carta enviada a Gil por Lattes após ter recebido o K7 com a gravação da música. E veja aqui a letra completa da música (com cifras).

César Lattes faleceu em março de 2005 aos 80 anos. A famosa Plataforma Lattes, sistema de informações organizado pelo CNPq para integrar bases de dados de currículos e de instituições da área de ciência e tecnologia, recebe este nome em homenagem ao cientista.

Google is planning to launch a branded smartphone that will bypass mobile operators and compete with handset vendors running its own Android platform, reported TheStreet yesterday citing an analyst source. Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar, who claims to have talked to Google’s design partners about the plan, says the device will be sold via retailers rather than operators. By bypassing the operators, Google is aiming to offer a device that lets users determine the functions. The rumoured “unlocked, low-cost, Web-friendly touchscreen device” is also likely to undercut the Android phones being developed by the likes of Motorola, the report says. “It’s a bit of a departure from Google’s strategy, but I think the speculation is valid,” says Michael Cote of the Cote Collaborative.

Kumar predicts that the device could be launched by year-end, though others think this timeframe is optimistic. He adds that the device is likely to be based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform but it is unclear who will actually build the device. The report noted that Google already has plans with computer-maker Quanta to build its own netbooks that will run on a Linux-based Google Chrome operating system (OS) and be available next summer. But TheStreet says that Taiwan’s HTC is the most likely vendor to build Google its own Android phone. HTC was an early supporter of the Android platform and already has four Android phones available in the marketplace. Neither Google, HTC nor Quanta were available to comment. A report this week by AdMob claims that Android has secured a 7 percent share of the smartphone OS market since launching a year ago.

Notebook YeeLoong8089

Uma notícia muito boa, dada pelo Alexandre Oliva, que transcrevi neste post, foi o lançamento do primeiro netbook completamente livre do mundo. No post, Alexandre não deu detalhes técnicos, mas consegui informações neste site, que transcrevo aqui:

Trata-se de um netbook com tela de 8,9″, totalmente equipado com software livre (BIOS, drivers, Sistema Operacional) e com hardware livre, ou seja, ele pode ser desmontado, copiado, a cópia pode ser vendida, mas o conceito de “livre” implica que qualquer outro desenvolvimento a partir dele deva ser livre também.

Segundo o desenvolvedor, a Quanta Computer, o maior fabricante de notebooks em OEM do mundo (não dá para falarmos mais em “fabricante”, já que este pode ser qualquer um que queira fabricá-lo), diz que ele tem o melhor desempenho dessa classe de equipamentos, baixo consumo de energia (12 Watts para a versão equipada com drive SSD). É possível, ao contrário dos outros equipamentos móveis “não livres” do mercado, alterar as configurações de hardware, anexando módulos como disco rígido, wireless, câmera, bluetooth e GPS. Você pode escolher uma configuração que mais se adapte às suas necessidades evitando pagar por hardware que não utiliza.

Während eigentlich alle Welt meint, dass der große Trend Netbook heißt, scheinen sich in Wahrheit All-in-one-PCs zum Kassenschlager zu mausern.

Darauf deutet jedenfalls die Ordersituation von Quanta hin, wo die Rechner gefertigt werden – egal, ob hinterher Fujitsu, Acer oder MSI draufsteht.

Besagte drei Firmen jedenfalls haben – so wollen es die üblichen taiwanesischen Quellen erfahren haben – bei Quanta kräftig neu bestellt und sollen die neuen All-in-one-Computer demnächst erhalten, damit sie dann unter eigenem Namen den begierigen Käufern präsentiert werden können. Ebenfalls für Oktober erwartet wird ein HP-Rechnr, der bei Quanta fabriziert wird.

Quanta wird inklusive  dieser Bestellungen 2009 wohl zwei Millionen All-in-ones ausliefern; allein im letzten (noch kommenden) Quartal wird mit 300.000 Touchscreen-Modellen pro Monat gerechnet, wohl nicht zuletzt wegen Windows 7. [dieter]

Those of you who have been following my Linux Critic blog know that I’ve been on an app-hunt to replace some of the applications to which I’ve grown used to in KDE, mostly so that I can break my ties with that desktop and move forward completely without it. So far I’ve had some measure of success in this task, so I thought I’d do a writeup in case anyone else out there is moving on from KDE and needs some ideas about how to do that.

Finding replacement apps: It’s like switching from Windows to Linux all over again

It feels like I just did this, even though I’ve been running Linux as my primary OS since around 2002. When I decided to stop using KDE recently, I was surprised to find how many KDE applications on which I had become dependent, and how little idea I had what to use as alternatives. Some of them are little and therefore easily replaced, but others that are more full-featured have been quite a challenge. Here’s a sampling of the ones I’ve been working on lately.

Konqueror File Manager

This one is quite possibly the hardest one I’ve had to replace. Anyone out there who has grown accustomed to the power and flexibility of Konqueror File Manager can attest that it’s very difficult to settle on something else once you’ve used it for any length of time.

Fortunately for me, there are many file managers out there for Linux, so I had options a-plenty, but none quite so robust as Konqueror, so I simply found that I had to compromise a number of things in the process. In the end, no single file manager fit my needs, so I replaced Konqueror with two: Thunar and XFE. I chose these two ultimately because they both have a tree-view in the left-pane and a folder/file view in the right-pane, and they both let you type your path into an address/location bar instead of clicking through a bunch of breadcrumbs (I hate file managers that only give you breadcrumbs).

Thunar is pretty, and simple, and has some nice features like thumbnail previews of image files, and it’s very lightweight when compared to Konqueror (but face it, just about ANY file manager is lightweight when compared to Konqueror). For most file management tasks, Thunar does pretty well, with the only thing I really miss out of it being the lack of tabs. One complaint I have about Thunar is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to turn off the stupid delete confirmation dialogue.

Really? Seriously? I know that shouldn’t drive me nuts, but come on. It makes me feel like I’m using Windows 98 again. In fact, in my testing, I also gave PCManFM a try, and that one even has tabs… but it too had no way to disable the delete confirmation dialogue.

I have what I consider to be very simple tests to determine whether a file manager doesn’t suck, and this is one of them. It’s not a complicated thing.

So, when I get tired of that particular FAIL in Thunar, I switch to XFE. XFE is lightning fast, very Konqueror-like in its flexibility and power, but it has a couple of annoyances as well. XFE also doesn’t have tabs, but I discovered that pretty much everywhere, and I can live with that if I have to, but some basic behavior in XFE bugs me.

Example: You just copied a bunch of files into the clipboard and you navigate to the folder into which you wish to paste them. If that folder is full, anywhere you right-click to paste just shows the context-menu for the file in that spot. Basically put, if there’s no white space for you to right-click on, there’s no way to paste into that folder, aside from going up a level and right-clicking ON that folder and selecting paste.

Like the delete confirmation stupid I mentioned above, this is a little thing that should not bother me that much, but it does. I found myself getting burned by this simple behavior time and time again, and it eventually frustrates me and slows me down so much (I’m used to flying through file management tasks with Konqueror) that I close XFE and go back to Thunar.

I actually really like XFE in nearly every other way… the fact that it has an integrated editor (“xfw”) and the myriad configuration options in the “Preferences” give me lots of ways to make it do what I want it to do.

However, I have discovered, unsurprisingly, that replacing Konqueror is a tough task. In the end, what I have is a pair of applications (Thunar and XFE) that I alternate between based on whichever one happens to be annoying me the most at any given time. This may change down the road, of course. Maybe Thunar will end up with tabs and a way to shut off the “HAY STUPID, ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DELEET THAT?” dialogue, and maybe the XFE devs will make some of its rather counter-intuitive behavior here and there (like I described above with copying and pasting) go away. Or, maybe some friendly reader here will pipe in and say “hey! Why don’t you try $XYZ? It’s just like Konqueror, but BETTER!” and suggest something that I never ran across that is a critic’s dream of a file manager. Who knows?

Kontact

I’ve written on switching to Thunderbird before, but I felt it relevant to mention it here, given the rest of the discusssion.

Kontact is a full-featured “personal information manager”, not just a mail client. The only other all-in-one such app that does everything that Kontact does out-of-the-box that I found in the open source universe was Evolution, and my recent experiences with Evolution have been less than happy, so I looked elsewhere. What I discovered was that Thunderbird had improved quite a bit over the past few years since I last tried it, and since there are more add-ons for it than you can shake a proverbial stick at, I thought that I might be able to get it to do at least a few of the things I wanted, namely Google calendaring and tasks on top of just POP mail.

I was right. With the Lightning add-on, I had a really nice integrated calendar, and I found out that it can talk to Google for calendaring (which is one up on Kontact… I had to do some pretty goofy stuff to get Kontact to do that even in a half-assed fashion, as opposed to Thunderbird with Lightning, a “full-assed” solution).

So for me anyway, Thunderbird with one simple add-on was enough for me to replace Kontact. It’s a solid mail client, and installing one add-on didn’t impact its performance by any measurable amount, and it added some great calendaring functionality, so I’m pretty happy with the results of this alternative.

Amarok

Amarok, like Konqueror, was another hard one to replace. While there are tons of open source music player applications out there, most of them are pretty feature-light. In fact, most of the ones I tested that liked to pretend to be “full featured” turned out to be less usable than even the lightweight XMMS. While there’s nothing wrong with XMMS, when you compare it to Amarok, it’s like comparing a compact economy car to a Cadillac. Yes, both will get you to where you’re going and they both do their stated job well, but when you’re used to the Cadillac, going to the compact economy car will leave you feeling short-changed.

So I tried a fair number of music players out there, including (but not limited to) Songbird, Banshee, Rhythmbox, and Audacious, and found that none of them were an adequate replacement for Amarok. I’d almost given up, but I had one more to try, and I’m glad I did try it. That one was Exaile.

Exaile is practically a GTK+ implementation of Amarok, it’s so close in form and function. It organizes your music library with a simple tree on the left, has an integrated album cover manager, sane buttons for controls, a big queue list that can be loaded simply by right-clicking on an artist, album, or song and selecting “append to current”, and the ability to create playlists very quickly and easily.

K3b

I haven’t found a replacement for K3b yet. Brasero is the one people always suggest, but I just find it a lot less intuitive than K3b. I can live with it, I suppose, but I’m still in the process of searching when it comes to DVD/CD burning.

Quanta

Like K3b, I haven’t found a replacement for Quanta yet. Bluefish is the one everyone suggests as an alternative to Quanta, but there really is no comparison. Granted, I don’t do a huge amount of web authoring, but I have grown very attached to Quanta for writing my Linux Critic articles, since I prefer to just write in straight-up HTML rather than use the WYSIWYG editor in WordPress, and Bluefish doesn’t even come close to making that process as fast and as slick as Quanta does. So I’m still looking in this particular department as well.

A resource I need to use more

One thing I should mention, for anyone else out there that is also going through something similar, is a great place on the web to find alternates to various applications. Osalt.com has a huge list of applications to suggest if one is looking for another option for anything.

For example, just digging around a bit to look for Quanta alternatives yields this page which lists a fair number of applications I still have yet to try, so obviously I need to spend more time on that site in my endeavoring to replace KDE applications.

I’ll write up an update if or when I make any more progress in this task!

Und die heißt Qmulous (zusammengesetzt aus – man ahnt es – Quanta und cumulous cloud, dem englischen Begriff für die klassische Schäfchenwolke): Das gemeinsam mit dem MIT geplante Projekt soll 2010 beginnen und es jedem jederzeit und überall ermöglichen, mit beliebigen elektronische Geräten auf Online-Daten zuzugreifen.

Das klingt erstmal spannend, sollte technologisch auch möglich sein, kommt aber mit dem üblichen Fragezeichen – was soll der Spaß denn kosten? Denn – und da bin ich wahrscheinlich nicht der einzige, der so denkt – mobiles Computing ist zwar eine feine Sache, aber erschwinglich sollte es bitte auch noch sein. [dieter]

I was asked about the usefulness of my last writing on the uncertainty principle. I guess I did not make its usefullness clear enough for anyone other than myself.

The reason I wrote that last article was as a way of helping myself and perhaps others explain away one of the many “inexplicables” that we term “quantum weirdness”.

One of these quantum weirdness items is that produced when a point-like particle is sent through a hole in a screen and later when another is sent through another hole it appears that in the world of quantum mechanics the universe already knew of the presence of the second and subsequent point-like particle(s) because we have a wave-like pattern when clearly we believed we only sent particles spaced perhaps days apart through the slits in the screen. What we were expecting was two dots on the grid indicating two point-like particles hitting it but instead we got a wave pattern which cannot be explained unless the quantum world already knew of the existence of the second and/or other particles that would be coming through in the future.

What I was explaining is that these are not point-like particles and never have been. They are waves and so when the first one goes through the slit (or hole) in the screen it has already radiated energy which arrived before it and left an imprint of a wave pattern on the detection grid but we only see the strongest energy (which is the energy at the tangent of the wave-front) as being visible to us in the shape of a point-like particle (this is the tangent point) because the grid was not able to register the weaker radiation emitted from the wave which arrived at its surface long before the actual wave-front did .

However, once the second and subsequent waves were sent through the screen their radiated energy (also wave patterns) which we would also not be able to detect individually added to the already present energy (remember that energy was absorbed by the grid and is now being re-radiated as blackbody radiation) and so we can now visibly see the wave pattern because the energies which were to weak to be detected individually have now been added together to make them strong enough to detect on the grid (remember also that energy is in packets called quanta and so the added energies now have enough energy to make up a quanta packet). What the grid shows is the wave pattern that was already there and is now being interfered with by the newly radiated wave pattern (constructively in some places and destructively in others) that came through later.

There is no “quantum weirdness”; all is explicable as interactions (what we also call entanglements) in the quantum world.

Bringing HD to netbooks is a big thing right now and Nvidia started it out with their Ion graphics. Another company plans to bring HD to netbooks [and notebooks] without the need of an internal graphics chipset. At IFA, FaceVision has shown off that they can bring 1080p HD to netbooks with an ExpressCard slot.

“Quanta subsidiary FaceVision is launching a card that you can plug into a notebook or netbook that will add the ability to play 1080[p] videos in the H.264 format.” We don’t know when this will launch and we also don’t know the price, so in the meantime you’ll just have to check it out on video below.

Okay, just to be clear, what I’m doing is taking Dr. Robert Anthony’s course “The Secret of Deliberate Creation”. I’m going to find out if –when I follow his instructions to the letter– I’ll end up getting what I want.

Today I listened to the first 9 mp3s. Let me give you an overview of what Dr. Robert Anthony discusses, without spoiling the fun for you.

Intro – Dr. Anthony says that there are other truths out there, and that he is just going to give us the benefit of his 30 years of reading and experience. I think that’s cool; I don’t like it too much when people go around saying or pretending they have all the answers.

He then proceeds by giving his general thoughts on following through and ‘doing’. Then he addresses creation. An explanation of how thoughts become things, and a discussion of the hidden commands in the brain follows. We are going to ‘learn the art of manifestation without getting hurt’. Nice!

Quantum physics – for me this is a familiar area as I have spoken with quantum physicists before and also with Law of Attraction teachers. Still, Dr. Rhobert Anthony proves to be a very good teacher. He’s able to discuss complex topics in simple words and he understands the power of repetition.

Well worth listening to. I won’t repeat the whole explanation, but in short, the whole Universe consists of pockets of energy called quanta. It’s our job to convert these quanta –that don’t have a physical shape yet– into a desired physical reality. What’s really important here is understanding that all of this is based in science, which helps to build the faith and belief to deliberately create.

Law of Attraction – the glue that holds it all together. It’s impartial and impersonal. Dr. Anthony discusses the creative process. He also includes the influence of the collective, which is good, and forgotten by some of the teachers out there. One thing that stood out was: you can’t eliminate what happened in the past, but you can create something new in the now. Relax, let go and allow what you want to manifest.

How the collective consciousness of others affects your life – this is another very nice mp3. Some highlights: groups collectively cause their effects; get what you want by helping otheres to get what they want; you can only change the world one person at the time, which is change from the inside out.

How to use your Inner Guidance System (IGS) – pay attention to how you’re feeling; it determines what you attract. Your IGS gives you 4 messages that help you get closer to what you want. If you can make sense of them! Feel good as often as you can.

The Secret of the Flip Switch – this is an example of how Dr. Anthony’s constant repetition of the most important points will probably help you get the results, whereas just reading the highlights like you’re doing here probably won’t.

Introducing your Essential Silent Partner (ESP) – Dr. Anthony explains the difference between the ego and the ESP, your authentic self. Other than the ego, the ESP is not bogged down by the past, beliefs, etc. We’re here for a specific purpose a mission. We have free will, so how we get there is not determined. The ESP knows our mission and specific purpose, and talks with us, through desires and feelings to help get us there.

Heartset vs mindset – The mindset is a fixed belief system, formed by past experiences, education and training. There’s no emotional power behind it. The heartset is what we have our heart set on having, being, seeing, feeling and experiencing.

Dr. Anthony explains why we follow our mindset, and why that might not be such a good idea. Success is inevitable when you follow your true heart’s desire(s)

CenterPoint Energy, Inc. (NYSE:CNP) announced that on Aug. 4, its electric transmission and distribution subsidiary, CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric LLC, applied to the U.S. Department of Energy for a $200 million grant for a project titled “Houston’s Smart Grid: Transforming the Future of Electric Distribution & Energy Consumption.”

The project involves two distinct but interdependent parts. If granted, CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric will use $150 million of the requested $200 million grant to accelerate its current smart meter and associated equipment installation that make up its Advanced Metering System (AMS). The $50 million balance will be used to accelerate the installation of the first phase of CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric’s Intelligent Grid (IG) that utilizes the AMS and other technologies to build a self-healing grid, and improve operational efficiency and reliability.

“CenterPoint Energy’s electric infrastructure is critical to the international commerce that flows through our Texas Gulf Coast service territory, which is susceptible to hurricanes,” said Tom Standish, group president of Regulated Operations for CenterPoint Energy. “We’re committed to strengthening the company’s electric grid to increase reliability and speed restoration following outages. Our Smart Grid alliance, including company personnel, together with consultants from IBM, GE, Itron, and Quanta who have subject matter expertise, firsthand knowledge of our company and the electric industry, and proficiency in Texas’ competitive electricity market, provides for a level of skill, experience and know-how that is unmatched in the industry.”

CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric is a regulated electric utility whose rates, operations and services are subject to the jurisdiction of the Public Utility Commission of Texas. It provides electric transmission and distribution delivery services to more than two million metered customers in a 5,000-square-mile area of the Texas Gulf Coast, including Houston, the nation’s 4th largest city and “energy capital of the world.” Houston is also home to N.A.S.A., the Texas Medical Center and the Port of Houston Authority, the largest port in the U.S. in terms of foreign tonnage.

CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric’s five-year smart meter deployment began in March 2009, and on Aug. 1, the company reached a significant milestone with the installation of 45,000 smart meters and started delivering enhanced smart meter functionality to REPs, including 15 minute interval energy usage data. By the end of the year, 145,000 smart meters will be installed along with the necessary communications infrastructure and computing systems. More than 2 million meters are expected to be installed system-wide by the project’s completion in 2014 or by the end of 2012, with the aid of the federal grant money.
