I have been a little scarce over the alleged holiday season. I found myself with this stack of books and nothing like the time I wanted to devote to them; I blush to say I have still only accounted for three entire ones and parts of four more.

Right now I am embarking on John Gribbin’s In Search of Schrodinger’s Cat. I’ve never liked that cat gedankenexperiment, in which the observer effect in  quantum physics is illustrated by imagining a cat in a box with a poison gas capsule that does or doesn’t deploy and, until you open the box to look, the cat is “both dead and alive…” well, let’s say that if time travel is ever discovered I stand ready to kick Erwin Schrodinger’s ass around the block for even imagining anything that would hurt a cat, but meanwhile, physics is one of those things that fascinates me consistently even if my mind slides off it like a grapnel off an obsidian wall. I get it up to a point, and then I lose my grip. Gribbin, whose book is a classic I have culpably neglected, was recommended by a medical friend who also sent me The Botany of Desire. (It’s about plants that humans have fucked with, not plants that conduce to fucking.) More as I read it.

In the same breath — sort of — I’ve been devouring Harry Potter scholarship. So sue me, I’m an old used literature major whose undergraduate work was all elbow deep in the poets and prosodists of the Neoplatonic and Enlightenment centuries, not to mention an unapologetic taste for The Inklings, despite a temperament best described as pagan skeptic. I got sucked into the Potter stuff, inevitably, and given the conspicuous historical, mythical and linguistic literacy of the series, there was no way I was going to pass up a book like Unlocking Harry Potter, which proposed to trace influences and undercurrents as various as the alchemical Great Work and the devices of Jane Austen. It was such a rip that I bought three more books written or edited by its author, John Granger, genially known as “The Hogwarts Professor.” If some of my literature professors had been as deft in demonstrating the philosophical substructure of the poems and plays that I loved just for their own internal virtues, who knows, I might be on some faculty today. (But probably not: tenure battles and similar bitchery would have driven me to operate a sandwich wagon or something like that, eventually, not to mention the crap I would have had to take for doing handstand push-ups against the door of my office and drafting my graduate students for donkey raises.)

The whole glut is giving me swimmy phantasmagoria as I fall asleep, in which a hippogriff in a box with a poison egg emerges before the physics class can open it and kicks Erwin Schrodinger in the head before flying off with Hermione Granger, Time-Turner and all, astride his winged back.

And we haven’t even brought in the vampire novel yet.

Yes and no. Terrestrial scientists are not even in agreement as to what is really going on in the quantum world. That is why several different models have been developed over the last 80 years to express different interpretations.

While scientists do agree that the quantum micro-world represents a strange realm where primal entities exist in a non-local state of potentials (superposition), they are unsure whether this state is something strangely physical or completely non-material. Adding to this difficulty, scientists cannot grasp how the indeterminate and schizophrenic world of quantum froth (wave/particle duality) gives birth to the determinate properties of larger scale systems (like solar systems and galaxies). What is the causal connection between these opposing situations?

Simply throwing up one’s hands and chalking up everything to irreducible chance means there is no rational reason for why the universe is structured so rationally and orderly. Which is awkward since science believes it has reasoning on its side (rather than faith and religion). Furthermore, if scientists cling to the notion that the universe appeared out of nothing (ex nihilo) then creation could not have had a physical cause!

If the laws of physics ruling the universe on the fundamental level of reality, emerge out of a non-material, pre-space and pre-geometric realm beyond time and space, then you open a door for God to enter into the equation.

So if angels actually exist they would live in a non-local realm and would know which approach to quantum physics was most correct. Angels would have first-hand experience in observing creation and causal process from non-material first principles.

For assistance in helping us understand angelic perception, I believe that scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg offers us the most complete and rational approach. He claimed that angels perceive dynamics, process and action totally removed from their involvement with time and space. While most scientists who cling to materialistic philosophies see action devoid of time or space as impossible, Swedenborg offered an abundance of rational approaches to this problem. By the way, eminent physicist John Wheeler theorized that spacetime might have arisen out of a pre-geometric realm.

Swedenborg would have described Wheeler’s pre-geometry and the Spiritual World as one and the same thing. This means that he would have identified pre-geometry as spiritual forms resulting from spiritual forces and activity. To form a picture of this non-material realm we merely need to focus on our own thoughts. We can be standing at a bus stop in winter but our mind may be on a Caribbean beach. Our thoughts have real trajectories, directionality, and targets. Mental activity is non-physical and not constrained by physical laws. More intriguing, thoughts can be arranged into real order and coherent structure, giving rise to human understanding and belief-systems (worldviews). This non-physical structure and order is oriented towards our life-choices and values.

To sum all this up, Swedenborg claimed that complexity (including bio-structure) emerged from non-material complexity in a non-spatial and non-temporal realm. An Infinite Creator, like God in heaven, certainly fits the bill for representing a non-physical source of irreducible complexity. Nature’s incessant drive for self-organization comes from a creative, unifying force from the non-physical realm of heaven. This force, or first principle in the universe is LOVE!

Everyone can agree that the essence of Love is to unite. Love unites people as well as creates the non-physical structure of our worldviews from the values we choose. What we love, we value. Similarly, all order and orientation in the physical universe comes from Love’s non-material endeavor to unite things into coherent structure.

Love in heaven corresponds to harmonic principles in the physical universe.

So, physicists will be challenged in the future to see that within their idea of quantum foam lay deeper worlds of order and process—including non-physical process. Physicist David Bohm had similar ideas of a hierarchical or layered design of reality.

Winter is a time when we slow down and become introspective. Sitting and staring into the fire, we ponder the big questions. If you have been following this blog, you know that the focus here is science, science that can be done simply in outdoor settings. But we are more than scientists, and science has well defined limitations that need to be understood by everyone who does science or studies its findings. This winter I am using one post per week to develop my own viewpoint and biases, in particular sharing my take on the relationship between science and spirituality. In part this defines for me what these two realms of human experience are all about, and also develops the separate methods used for inquiry in each realm. I plan to place this paragraph in front of each entry in this series, so that those who are interested only in natural history or in scientific practice can skip these posts.

What is the Physical Universe, Really? (1: “Particles”)

We are accustomed to a world in which objects are solid and constant, with properties such as color and density that we regard as “real,” i.e., as having some objective truth about them. If the physiological discussion already presented was not enough to shake up that view, here come the physicists.

Curiosity leads us to wonder, what are things made of? What gives them their properties? The quest for answers to such questions has led scientists into the world of the very small, and that world is strange indeed.

Various measurements and tests have been done to discover the basic building blocks of matter and energy. It has been demonstrated in many ways that the tiny “particles” that comprise matter are not particles, really, but are what physicists refer to as quanta, having properties of particles but also properties of waves. The electrons, photons, etc., seem to behave as waves up to the point where certain measurements are taken, and then they register as particles. Other measurements clearly indicate that they are waves. Thus they are present in any particular spot only statistically, not in any solid, constant sense.

Atoms, like air guitars, are mainly empty space, and what isn’t space isn’t really solid. Gary Zukav’s analogy (1979. The Dancing Wu Li Masters) is to say that if a baseball were Earth sized, its atoms would be as big as grapes. However, each atom’s diameter would have to be elevated to the size of a 14-story building before its nucleus would grow to the size of a grain of salt. The electrons then would be as massive as dust particles.

Empty space isn’t what it seems, either. Even a “vacuum” contains energy. (So do vacuum cleaners, as many a dog and cat will attest). This energy is stirring in such a way that matter is constantly appearing and disappearing within it. The amount of vacuum energy density is called the cosmological constant. Some theoretical calculations give ridiculously large numbers, 120 orders of magnitude greater than what is observed. That amount would have blown the universe apart if that large in fact. Nevertheless, the accelerating expansion of the universe suggests a nonzero, positive cosmological constant. The possibility is being considered by some theorists that it is not in fact constant or even uniform, and it may change quantum-wise. The mystery has been given a name, “dark energy,” but it is not at all understood.

Getting back to the strange, statistical nature of “particles,” these are constantly changing, dividing, reforming and cycling among themselves in various combinations of still more elementary particles such as quarks and gluons. For example, within a nucleus, protons and neutrons constantly are exchanging bits and pieces, becoming one another and other less familiar forms of particles in a never-ending game of musical chairs. Some of the participants in this game are anti-particles. Anti-particles are thought by some physicists to be particles moving backwards in time; we perceive them only for an instant, and so cannot see the direction they are moving through time. (The brains of terrorists are thought to have unusually high concentrations of anti-particles).

Thus, a surface only feels solid. In fact it is really only “there” in a statistical sense. When I hold my finger and thumb together to make the OK sign, my digits don’t pass into each other because there are enough electrons present at any moment to repel the two surfaces.

Already there is a website on how to speak the Na’vi language of the lithe blue people of Avatar’s planet, Pandora. A Google blog search turns up 87,484 hits for the name of the tribe and its language and 917,000 for Neytiri, the main Na’vi woman in the film, played by Zoë Saldaña.

A professor of astrophysics who specializes in searching for life in the universe has written an extensive piece in understandable language on the accuracy of the science in Atavar and given it mostly high grades. (One item – there is a reason everything is so blue).

In its first two weeks, Avatar grossed nearly $213 million on about 7,000 screens nationwide, more than half showing the stunning 3-D version, in which fire sparks flicker and Woodsprites dance inches from the audience, and one can look deep into the lush landscape and almost ride the swooping banshees.

Outside the U.S., Avatar took in $164.5 million in five days from 64 markets, not counting Japan (opened 12/23), China (1/4) and Italy(1/15). It is showing on 1,350 screens in Russia.

President Obama and the First Lady took their daughters to see the film on New Year’s Eve while on vacation in Hawaii, in between calls regarding the Christmas Day attempted bombing of an intercontinental flight into Detroit.

All this is to say that the movie has been seen by millions of people around the globe, written about by thousands, and if we are to believe even the most skeptical media researchers, it will not only entertain and employ, but have an effect on the attitudes and behaviors of large numbers of people all over the world.

In the lingo of memetics, some people will link many of the concepts in Avatar with what they feel is a desirable way to live and pass those links, or memes, onto others.

This possible effect of movies isn’t new, but it is likely to happen much more quickly and extensively in our 2010 interconnected world that it could, for example, when Dances with Wolves presented some similar ideas in 1990 or Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner challenged racial attitudes in 1967.

Our vast access to each other’s thoughts and beliefs is the first of two new forces involved. For example, among the tweets that were flooding Twitterdom at the rate of 50 a minute at about 9 p.m. Chicago time on New Years Eve were these:

One woman from Indonesia tweeted:
“Avatar seriously owns me. I’ve never wanted to be blue and to have a tail so bad in my life.”

Another tweet, from Bali woman, included a link to a photo of the sky she had seen during an outdoor New Year’s celebration:
“They’re bubbles in the air, and suddenly I miss Eywa from Avatar.”

And a third from Canada:
“A day after Avatar this thing landed on my son! So weird! He’s been chosen by Eywa!”

Sure, some of this is joking, and many people will forget about the movie quickly. But as the discussion of Avatar’s religious, environmental, political, gender and racial dimensions continues to appear in media channels across the board, some people are being encouraged by the message of unity with nature and a Mother Spirit, while others are critical and even fearful.

Roger Ebert summed up part of the film’s impact:

“Avatar is not simply a sensational entertainment, although it is that. It’s a technical breakthrough. It has a flat-out Green and anti-war message. It is predestined to launch a cult.”

It doesn’t seem to be the environmental and anti-war messages, however, that are stirring up the most heated discussions. It’s not even the “white people as oppressors and then saviors” undertones, although those are being criticized.

It is the vibrant and deep spirituality of the Na’vi, which includes a networked nature connected to and nourished by the Mother God, Eywa, that seems to push the most buttons.

On the Op-Ed page of the New York Times, conservative columnist Ross Douthat derided the movie as another example that “pantheism has been Hollywood’s religion of choice for a generation,” and then dismissed the spirituality depicted in the film as lacking any value.

In response, Mark Stricherz, a self-proclaimed “orthodox Catholic” writing on TrueSlant, toed the company line that pantheism was heresy, but still criticized Douthat’s view and gave Avatar a nod for containing the “kernel of truth” that “nature should not be subjugated or mastered…but celebrated as an expression of God’s bounty.”

But Stricherz and others, including the writer of  “Avatar inspires thoughts about our awesome future,” are clear that it is a separate, transcendent God that they prefer people see as their spiritual link, not a female Deity and a conscious, interconnected world of spiritual beings, humans, plants and animals.

The concept of interconnectedness, however, is the second force involved in the potential power of Avatar, and its movement from the fringes to the main stream is accelerating.

The Internet has a lot to do with the growing understanding and acceptance of our interconnectedness, as does the maturing of the uber-connected Millennial generation, the technology that allows virtual meetings and a new physics that includes particles and waves that can communicate with each other across miles of space.

If this were a new experience, however, it would be easy to dismiss, but that is not the case.

Director James Cameron seems to have tapped into a spiritual thread dating back 2,600 years. It waned for centuries in the West, pushed to the side by Aristotelian/Cartesian dualism and Newtonian physics, which were important in their day, only to begin to grow again in the early 20th century as quantum physics emerged and a renewed interest in the unity of spirit and creation came to the fore.

One of the more thought provoking blogs about the religious aspects of the film comes from an unexpected source. Fr. Andrew Damick, who describes himself as an orthodox Christian priest, praises Avatar for its more pagan than pantheistic philosophy, pointing out that Eywa answers prayers and the Na’vi have temples, and considers this line of thinking to also be present in more traditional religions.

“What I think is worth noting in this pagan/pantheistic view of god, man and nature,” Damick writes, “is its similarity to Orthodox Christianity.”

He could have said the same about the concepts the film shares with Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sufism and the mystical traditions within Judaism and Christianity. A big, strong tent and growing.

Overview

We are now in the Age of Aquarius. Our Solar System we will be here for 2000 years. We have just left the Age of Pisces.

There will be a need for a New Age of Aquarius Healing Clinic. The new paradigm of the Age of Aquarius is the Laws of Quantum Physics. These laws tell us that all is energy. The Planet is energy, the Solar System , Galaxy and Universe are energy. God is energy.

Therefore the New Age of Aquarius paradigm for a healing clinic will be all about energies. Energy healing.

Two very important points to begin with. One: since I am not a doctor, nor do I belong to the AMA, then by their arbitrary law it is against the law to talk about curing – healing. The clinic does not heal. It teaches you how to heal yourself.

The second part is this: Since we are energy beings, our health and well being depends upon a continuous flow of life force through out our bodies, through our chakra system. It is life force that heals.

Illness will be defined by us as blockage to the flow of energy or life force any where in the body. If a chakra is blocked of life force, ill-ness will occur.

Therefore the new Age of Aquarius healing clinic will be based on clearing up energy blockages and increasing the flow of life force in the body.

When this happens, the body will naturally heal itself. The body is intelligent and will take care of itself if we give it the energy it needs.

Here is a general over view of the healing energy techniques we will use in our new Age of Aquarius healing clinic.

The energy healing tools are : Chiropractic, Color healing, Bach flower remedies, Homeopathic remedies, Eeman circuits, Radionics devices, Acupuncture, Herbology and Reflexology.

All these methods are based on removing energy blockages in the body and increasing the flow of life force.

The New Age of Aquarius healing clinic will be housed in a huge, many roomed mansion on at least 100 acres with a large pond. The grounds will be covered with gardens of flowers, fruit trees, herbs and vegetables.

The mansion will have separate healing rooms designated for each of the energy treatments.

There will be a complete staff of energy specialists, a Chiropractor, a Homeopathic doctor, a Bach flower remedy expert, a Dinshah Color healing expert, a Radionics expert; a Nutritionist, an Herbalist, an Eeman circuit specialist, a Yoga and Meditation teacher, and last but not least several Pendulum experts who will help with all the correct remedy selection.

The clinic will be absolutely free. But there will be a large urn at the door way for those compelled to leave a donation. A gift for a gift.

There will be no advertising, nor media exposure. The clinic will attract those who need it through the laws of Resonant Frequencies.

Just like in the movie “Field of Dreams,” they will come.

Those who leave the clinic with positive experience (again I cannot say healing) will by word of mouth spread the news of the clinic rather than advertising.

Since I personally love the Runes, Astrology and Quantum Physics , classes will be held in these subjects. As well as others including painting, writing and music.

Operation

The overall function of the Age of Aquarius Paradigm Healing Clinic is to enable people to heal themselves.

This is done through a full scale energy clinic that has all the 21^st Century, Age of Aquarius energy healing techniques.

We make no claims of healing at any time. We allow people to heal themselves. We teach through a series of classes and lectures that everything is energy. People are energy beings. As energy beings they need an unblocked flow of life-force (Prana, Galama, Elan Vital) though out their body.

Blockages of Life-Force anywhere in the body will cause what is known as “ill-ness” or “dis-ease.”

I can’t tell you what motivated this post. The timing and fact alone that I am making present enough correlation for an argument of some sort, to say the least.

However, this post is overdue – the term “overdue” here used with utmost euphemism.

And yet, this post is about nothing – nothing, at all.

That being said, I will henceforth argue that those believing the above statement carries no meaning are parties herefore ignorant and on my part ignored, from here-on-out.

One of the kings of New Age nonsense, Deepak Chopra, has written a widely read article at the Huffington Post (yet another reason to no longer take HuffPo seriously), and I felt that it deserved a bit of analysis.  The piece, titled Woo Woo Is a Step Ahead of (Bad) Science, is an interesting rant on the part of Chopra about why all things about the modern skeptical movement, “western” science (science is science folks, wherever it’s practiced), and Michael Shermer are off base, wrong, and just plain mean & nasty.  Chopra really seems to have had something stuck in his craw, and I suppose this was his way of getting it out…

There’s plenty of silliness to cover in Chopra’s article, so we might as well get started…

In reference to a recent discussion he had with Michael Shermer on Larry King Live, Chopra states:

Afterwards, however, I had an unpredictable reaction. I realized that I would much rather expound woo woo than the kind of bad science Shermer stands behind. He has made skepticism his personal brand, more or less, sitting by the side of the road to denigrate “those people who believe in spirituality, ghosts, and so on,” as he says on a YouTube video. No matter that this broad brush would tar not just the Pope, Mahatma Gandhi, St. Teresa of Avila, Buddha, and countless scientists who happen to recognize a reality that transcends space and time. All are deemed irrational by the skeptical crowd. You would think that skeptics as a class have made significant contributions to science or the quality of life in their own right. Uh oh. No, they haven’t. Their principal job is to reinforce the great ideas of yesterday while suppressing the great ideas of tomorrow.

Right off the bat, Deepak Chopra gets the whole endeavor of modern skepticism wrong, and I think he does so intentionally.  I think he is both creating a straw man to fight in his characterization of Shermer (and the “skeptical crowd”) as well as poisoning the well by attempting to turn all “spiritual” people against the skeptical movement.  He’s not making any kind of rational argument here, he’s simply making a blatant appeal to people’s base emotions in an attempt to create a false dichotomy: Chopra is on the side of “good”, while Shermer and the “skeptical crowd” are on the side of “bad/evil” – thus, by extension, he and the other “good guys” must be right.  How silly.

And here’s the biggie: Chopra states, quite incorrectly, that all skeptics summarily dismiss all paranormal claims (such as the kind made by Deepak Chopra all the time) out of hand in a very nasty & cynical fashion.  I will admit that while some people in the skeptical movement do that, most (like Shermer) do not; most skeptics are genuinely interested in having rational discussion with those who make such outlandish claims as made by Chopra.  We are interested in having a reasoned discourse on these topics, but before we can accept the claims we have a standard of evidence that must be met – in keeping with the scientific method.

For example, as a physicist I’m perfectly willing to give Chopra’s claims of “quantum healing” some serious consideration, if he would 1) display that he has even a basic understanding of the accepted science of quantum physics, and 2) would be willing to put his claims to the test.  But instead he and numerous other New Age gurus would rather just talk (using a lot of flowery & pseudoscientific language in the process), and when people like Shermer and me refuse to accept his claims just on his say-so, he throws a hissy-fit.  Wah.

In short, charlatans like Deepak Chopra want the validity & respect of modern science, they just don’t want to do the work to earn it.  Let’s continue analyzing Chopra’s tantrum, after he challenges Michael Shermer to a public debate…

The rules will be simple. He can argue from any basis he chooses, and I will confine myself entirely to science. For we have reached the state where Shermer’s tired, out-of-date, utterly mediocre science is far in arrears of the best, most open scientific thinkers — actually, we reached that point 60 years ago when eminent physicists like Einstein, Wolfgang Pauli, Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrodinger applied quantum theory to deep spiritual questions. The arrogance of skeptics is both high-handed and rusty. It is high-handed because they lump brilliant speculative thinkers into one black box known as woo woo. It is rusty because Shermer doesn’t even bother to keep up with the latest findings in neuroscience, medicine, genetics, physics, and evolutionary biology. All of these fields have opened fascinating new ground for speculation and imagination. But the king of pooh-pooh is too busy chasing down imaginary woo woo.

I bolded the most relevant part of Chopra’s screed to point something very important out: he’s dead wrong.  Dead frakking wrong. First of all, he royally screws up when he states that Albert Einstein was somehow applying quantum theory to anything – Einstein actually rejected a fully-developed theory of quantum physics, and he spent the better part of his final years trying to do serious theoretical work without quantum physics.  The result: in the evolving physics community, he was seen as somewhat of a failure for ignoring the new (and undeniable) physics.  If Deepak Chopra knew anything about Einstein, he should know this, shouldn’t he?  I suppose Chopra was too busy sticking pins in his Michael Shermer doll to take the time to actually – gasp! – read up on the history of physics.

Secondly, Chopra’s claim about the actual quantum physicists – Pauli, Heisenberg, and Schrodinger – somehow applying quantum mechanics to the deep, spiritual mysteries of life is total B.S.  Chopra makes it sound like the entire motivation of these scientists was to answer the questions that he is attempting to “answer” – nothing could be further from the truth.  These scientists were interested in developing a physical (not spiritual) model of the world to explain what they and their contemporaries had observed about the universe.  Of course, if you are interested in spouting meaningless, non-sensical, and flowery language in an effort to empty people’s wallets (like Chopra), then why not throw in some false claims and crap you made up about quantum physics?

In the next section, Deepak Chopra sounds like a creationist right out of the Discovery Institute:

Skeptics feel that they have won the high ground in matters concerning consciousness, mind, the origins of life, evolutionary theory, and brain science. This is far from the case. What they cling to is 19th Century materialism, packaged with a screeching hysteria about God and religion that is so passé it has become quaint. To suggest that Darwinian theory is incomplete and full of unproven hypotheses causes Shermer, who takes Darwin as purely as a fundamentalist takes scripture, to see God everywhere in the enemy camp.

… I won’t go into detail about the absurdity of such rigid thinking. However, the impulse behind dogmatic materialism seems intended to flatten one’s opponents so thoroughly that through scorn and arrogance they must admit defeat, conceding that science is the complete refutation of all preceding religion, spirituality, psychology, myth, and philosophy — in other words, any mode of gaining knowledge that arch materialism doesn’t countenance.

Wow, yet more ranting business about materialism, God, blah-blah-blah.  First off, Chopra is ignoring the fact that there are many skeptics who also consider themselves religious.  Secondly, he seems to want to have a philosophical argument about “God vs. materialism” while also mixing up things with evolutionary theory – a scientific notion.  This is the same thing that creationists do all the time in an effort to muddy the waters: they scream and rant about “godless materialism” while in an effort to replace well-founded science with their half-baked, non-scientific ideas.  If Chopra wants to have a philosophical debate, he should just say so and stick to philosophy/theology, but he won’t do that because – as I pointed out earlier – he, like many other pseudoscientists, want the label of science without having to do the hard work for it.

Lastly, he (again, like creationists) creates a straw man argument by implying that skeptics somehow see Darwin’s work as a kind of religious dogma – that’s hilarious, as pretty much every skeptic I know acknowledges that there were plenty of things that Darwin got wrong or didn’t figure out in his time.  This, of course, doesn’t mean that evolutionary science is incorrect, it simply means that it has moved on (140+ years on) past Darwin.  Contrary to what he writes, it is Deepak Chopra who is stuck in the 19th century – I suppose it’s easier for him to stay there, fighting old battles, as opposed to staying current with modern science.

Deepak Chopra admonishes those who criticize him to “have an open mind”, and I agree.  Just don’t have a mind that is so open that your brain falls out

Blue Moon 12-31

Got to thinking about the Norway Lights again watching the full moon or Blue Moon, on New Year’s Eve.  http://blog.seattlepi.com/whidbey/archives/189486.asp?from=blog_last3 Just too busy imbibing and celebrating to post before now.

The next blue moons will be 2012: August 2, August 31 via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_moon . The next time New Year’s Eve will fall on a Blue Moon (as occurred on 31 December, 2009) is 2028.  Barring cataclysmic destruction in 2012, I pray we all are alive to see it.

It’s called a blue moon when there are two full moons in a one month period, and it happens pretty infrequently.  The moon doesn’t turn blue.  The only thing blue in the dark skies at night are these odd blue lights, most recently over Norway but seen other places too.  China. Russia. Experts are claiming it was a failed missile lauch.  

This is a submarine launched Trident Missile PEM-1 Launch failure.  While it does spiral, it explodes rather quickly.  There was no explosion caught on tape in Norway, and the blue spirals lasted 10 to 12 minutes according to some eye witnesses.

Why are there two different spirals? One is blue, one is white?  To my unscientific eye, the spirals are going in two different directions.  Maybe a piece of something broke off?   The energy beam went crazy?

Here is a video of an eyewitness describing blue lights over China. I have no idea what he’s saying but if you forward to the last 20 seconds you can see the image is comparable to the lights seen over Norway.  

The following shows Trident II SLBM launched from Ohio-class submarine, soon after disintegrates.  It does not linger in the sky for 10 minutes.  

The Russian SS-NX-30, or Bulava, is an intercontinental-range, submarine launched, solid propellant ballistic missile.  It is a version of world’s most advanced ICBM RS24 and a recent supposed launch failure is the official explanation for the blue lingering lights.  First the Russian Navy denied it was their fault, but have apparently taken the blame.

 A friend of mine sent me a youtube video of Zakir Naik a muslim caller  proving the existence of God. He mentions about if we come across machinery we do not think that the machinery came from nothing. We will usually say that there was a maker up of the machinery or an inventor. I am not an atheist in the sense of believing in a nihilistic viewpoint, but I am of the type to think of the concept of God much different then western religions.

 Seeing machinery or let us just say a piece of paper, we wonder where it came from. In Buddhism everything comes about through infinite causes and conditions. That piece of paper that is crumbled up on the ground is said to belong to Buddha. But what does it mean to belong to buddha? Does it mean the man, Siddhartha Gautama who lived in India 2,600 years ago? No, it belongs to the Buddha as in it comes about through interdependence.

 There are INFINITE causes and conditions that brought that paper to its state of being crumbled on the ground. Within that paper are trees infinite and vast. In the paper there are bugs and birds. In it is the sun and the moon. The atmosphere of the earth and the planetery stations of other planests in our solar system and many other galaxies. Water is seen in the paper. Countless human lives are found in it. Not only this but animals are found in it. The humans that made the paper out of the tree come about through infinite causes and conditions. If you remove just the sun the conditions are not right for that human to take form nor for the paper.  So from a Buddhist point of view it is not just looking at a piece of paper or machinery and believing it came out of nothing.

 Zakir Naik in the video alleges that the Qur’an supports the Big Bang Theory. He quotes this verse of the Qu’an:

Do the Unbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, before We clove them asunder? We made every living thing from water. Will they not then believe? (Qur’an 21:30)

It is nice to see this, but if only the Muslims could truely accept the Big Bang theory, it would clear up a lot of their myths and tales.

According to the Big Bang Theory which may or may not be accepted as truth states that the entire infinite universe was infinite potential, infinite small matter, that was condensed in infinite hot and dense place. From this matter as we know it which is basically just energy vibrating at a certain rate began expanding and continues to expand. This means there is no end to the universe.

 Now to some scientist and in particular Quantum Physicist, the view of the universe being an entanglement is probably due to the big bang. What is important to note here is that in Hinduism (more properly refferred to as Sanatana Dharma), Buddhism (the teachings of the Buddha), and Taoism (ancient Chinese way of life arisen from Shamanism) all teach that the Universe as infinite as it is is just one Whole Living Organism. This means that you and I are the same as a tree, rock, animal, or skies.  Muslims who dont know much about this might say its silly or its an unproven theory. However, scientist have proven the interconnectedness of the universe. There are many experiments in the US and Europe that shows the relationship of the Universe. When we study subatomic particles we have to conclude that everything consist of these and thus there is truely oneness.

 Not only this but scientist have proven Emptiness, which the Hindus (yogis and masters of old) knew way before Muhammad was even a small baby. The Taoist also knew this and after them the Buddhist. Shamans of not only eastern origin but also western knew of this as well. We might as well become Buddhist, hindus, and Taoist, and study western shamanism.

 So firstly we have to ask the Muslims if they believe Oneness of all that exist. The answer would be no, unless you were asking a Sufi who would be branded a heretic for expounding the doctrine of Wahdat al-wujud (Oneness of Being-which includes Oneness with Allah).

Would Muslims like to admit that a Believer is equal to an Unbeliever? It is as one eastern philosopher said as much as we hate Hitler, he is still apart of us. This is QUITE LITERALLY.

Muslims are not ready for this truth just yet. Perhaps in the future when there are not so many radicals that are willing to slit your throat for believing in doctrines outside of the Quran. The Buddha, and many Yogis before him awakened to the Reality of the Universe and the One Life that exist. That single Unicity of consciousness is called God in some Hindu sects. Buddhism likes to keep things with less concepts and simply call it Emptiness or Shunyata. It is all the same thing. Muslims cannot accept this.

Another thing that the Big Bang Theory would provide an explanation for Evolution which is not really a theory as Muslims, christians, and jews like to say. Evolution is fact. It doesnt mean that we just all came from monkeys. It is more infinite then this. If Muslims understand evolution is quite possibly caused by the Big Bang. The scientific community is quite convinced that evolution is fact. We even see this today. Just recently on Yahoo News there was a story of a type of bird that was evolving because of the size of the bird feeder it was feeding from. Plants have been evolving as is evident in the many species. Not just that but plants actually sometimes fight for sunlight with other plants and make attacks on eachother. Through evolution plants have developed defense mechanisms against other plants and bugs as well as fungi.

No Scientist have proven a creationist theory. It is difficult to say that there was just a FIRST CAUSE and then here the universe is.

Its odd that Zakir Naik uses this verse to prove the Qur’an without realizing that it promotes a doctrine other than creationism. The Qur’an still accepts that Allah created Adam and Eve. If we trace back the lineages through the prophets and history we would find the earth not to be as old as modern day scientist tells us. This is the problem Judaism, christianity, and Islam have.

 A Islamic caller named Yusuf Estes claims that evolution can be supported by the Qur’an. This to me just seems to be an apologetic claim.What is his proof? His proof is that Allah is called the “Shaper” in the Qur’an. This is a far stretch to conclude that evolution would be supported. We really would have to discard the story of Adam and Eve. We would also have to give up the fairy tales of Noah’s ark.

 If Zakir Naik really wants to prove the Big Bang Theory then he has just squashed the whole Islamic view point of creationism.

 See Hindus believe in a Deity, but in Sanatana Dharma this Deity is expressed in all things and transcends all things. In Sanatana Dharma (hinduism) evolution can be supported by the vedis. The same thing can be said in Buddhism and Taoism. So does Zakir Naik want the world to become Hindus, Buddhist, and taoist and perhaps Shamans? Or does he just want to narrow his views down to what he interprets of the Qur’an?

 Where are all the Islamic Scientist in the field of Quantum Physics that are finding the discoveries of Emptiness, Entanglement, and studying the possibility of the Big bang? How come they are silent and waited until modern day science (after non muslims began discovering it)? They could have told us all way before the modern science boom. We would be far more advanced, but the theories that the Qur’an supports these only came after Science became a strong foundation to discovering how the Universe works. It is much like the christians using so called scientific evidences in their works to prove their religion right. How come they all waited until these findings and then claimed the findings were in their books? Why didnt they lead the way and teach us about Emptiness, Oneness, Entanglement, and the Big Bang before non muslims founded it? If the truth had been in the Qur’an all along why not expound it?

 The difference between Judaism, Christianity, Islam, with religions like Sanatana Dharma (hinduism), Buddhism, Taoism, and Shamanism, is that Hindus, Buddhist, Taoist, and Shamans are not trying to convert people based on scientific findings in their scriptures, but instead are explaining scientific findings by direct experience as taught in their scriptures. So instead of making a doctrine about it, the Buddhist, Hindus, Taoist, and shamans are busy actually experiencing the truths and finding for themselves in their physical bodies and out of their physical bodies how the universe works.

Company Gloom Vs. Company Bliss
Quantum Physics states that everything is vibrational. Every time that you tune in to the positive radio station, Company Bliss becomes more powerful and Company Gloom becomes less powerful. This helps make the world be a more peaceful place.

I often think about life. Not exactly the meaning of it, but more how when I open my mind and let it all flow without any preconceived ideas about what it should be, I’m fascinated. Curious. In the moment. It’s quite liberating actually to just ‘Be’ and appreciate the moment in time where there is no past and no future, only now.  And as I am in the now, I can rest my conscious mind from all the busy chatter  during the course of the day. In the now, I am fully present and focused and can fully appreciate my experience. I am content.

This is not to say that I don’t have any ideas, dreams and ambitions as to what I want my life to be- I do- but I am also open to the journey of the stepping stones which take me off ‘course’. There is no real course unless one believes in fate and destiny. The jury is still out on that one. I have no idea where I will end up, what experiences I’ll have as I continue on my path but I will welcome them. My past has shaped me into the person that I am today and I have no regrets; because of the past, I have learned some valuable life lessons, painful as they were.

Where is this blog taking me? I’m sorry to all you readers out there who are scratching your  collective heads:-)!

Life as a concept is surreal. We are born, we have experiences and then we die. When I really think about that it’s most bizarre. I am all about quantum physics- does this blog really exist, do my experiences exist, can I create my own reality?

In times of complete uncertainty, this is what helps me the most:

Simply do this: Be still, and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself. Empty your mind of everything it thinks is either true or false, or good or bad, of every thought it judges worthy, and all the ideas of which it is ashamed. Hold onto nothing. Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught, nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. Forget this world, forget this course, and come with wholly empty hands unto your God.

Can you do it? Can you lay aside all false ideas about yourself and the world? Can you relinquish all ideas of lack or of littleness? Can you let go of your fear of the future? Or memories of pain of the past?

Can you have faith in One Who Knows you and knows you perfectly?

This is the great challenge of our species. Will you go on denying that there is a God who loves you totally? Will you put your faith in the temporal? Or in the eternal?

Time is a sleight of hand. It isn’t even real. You are making up time to prolong your inevitable demise. You cannot die. You are not a body. All fear stems from this one idea: that you can annihilate yourself. And it’s simply not true.

You are an eternal loving being created by an all loving God. He would never allow you to suffer pain, sickness or death. Love knows not of fear or death. He does not know of what you have made of yourself. You are perfect and whole as God created you. You could not alter yourself.

You are asleep in a dream, that is all. It is time to awaken and be free.

I have been challenged to my core. I have experienced deep losses. So have you. There is no difference, except perhaps I woke up and am aware that I am dreaming. And in this dream, the only thing I need do is let go. Forgive and be forgiven. Heal and be healed. I am in a continual healing experience that makes my little life seem insignificant. My mind is total, it is whole. It is not separate from you. The losses were only experiences of release of a self-constructed identity that could never be real anyway.

I must let go absolutely. Until then, I am nothing. I am afraid, selfish, self-seeking and dishonest. The program of healing the mind that is A Course in Miracles is also the 12 Step Program. This program has helped me immeasurably with my awakening. It brought me to my KNEES when I couldn’t find my way out of the pain. Taking inventory showed me the secret fears that I kept hidden from myself.

I can do nothing of myself. But I can let go and let God. This is so important and has gotten me through the deepest, darkest moments of my journey. I know there is a God because I have put my total trust in Him to heal me of my dream of separation from Him.

Do I have doubts? Am I uncertain about everything?

You bet. Do I know what to do when I have them? Yes. Get on my knees and ask to be shown. I don’t have to know what to do about tomorrow. I just have to know about right now. This is critical. Because all my fear has to do with the future.

I don’t know how I will pay my bills, I don’t know if I should sell my house. I don’t know if I should go back to school, find a new job, get remarried…you fill in the blank.

The kicker is this:

How can I know what to do when I don’t know who I am?

You see? The uncertainty is inherent in the fact that you don’t know who you are. So your job is to relinquish your ideas. Let go of the need to be in control. This seems like an easy directive, but try it. Do it every day.

All I really know is that if I ask for help and it will be given in the moment I most need it. I have to get really quiet, stop my questioning, let myself not know everything for a moment. In the now, I am totally uncertain, and in the uncertainty, I am free to let God direct me.

This is what total freedom is, it is the uncertainty principle. The Master Teacher always tell us to “stay uncertain”. Why? Because cause and effect are not apart. You are doing this to yourself. You cannot solve your problem, because the problem is YOU.

Quantum physics tells us one important thing, nothing is as you see it. There is only light, the physical matter you are viewing is coming from the visual cortex in your brain, and you are a projector of imagery! You are affecting everything around you. That is why it is so important that you take care of your thoughts. Every thought has an effect.

This is a bit scary at first, but when you experience the fact that everything you think is what makes up your experience of yourself, it is important to become totally self responsible. You want to be healed, because in your healing is all healing. You affect everyone and everything! It is a singular experience.

Because there is only ONE MIND…yours!

This is how it works. I wake up each morning and open the book and do the lesson. I am like a little kid who knows that my parent is with me and is taking perfect care of me, even when I am afraid. I let this parent know I am in His mind today. Everything is in His care.

This is a miraculous occurrence. I feel grounded. Loved, protected and guided.

It is a miraculous release! It has only to do with loving myself, my enemy. Serving my brother. Taking care of myself in the moment. Being good to myself and letting go of my agenda.

I don’t try to “create my day”. That is an attack on God. I let my day be led by Him, an all loving God who knows my best interests. That way, I know I am not separate and I can be happy. Totally out of control! Free to be passionate, to be blown away by love and the freedom of mind that comes with loss of control.

All control is an attack upon myself. I can stop attacking myself, surely, if I simply choose to let God be God. Then and only then can I be of service to those who still suffer. Working my 12th Step has shown me that I am not the center of the universe. That you are. You, a representative of God, are my savior and helper. I can rely on God, I can rely on your help and I can know that you are not separate from me. I know you are me.

If I harbor hateful thoughts about anyone, anyone at all, I cannot stand it. Love is the answer and forgiveness is the key. But how to forgive when it seems like someone has wronged you? Here it is: It’s you. You have that thought, you have made it up. You are projecting that onto the other guy. He is an image in your own mind.

He is You!

You are responsible for the cleanup. So, be about it. Let go your thoughts about the other guy. Has God changed His Mind about him or about you? Get on your KNEES. I love the direction, don’t go to sleep on a grievance. Take an inventory every night. Make that call!

Then ask yourself this. Who walks with me? Who is my guide, my protector, my friend?

Stay in communication with this Mind. You are being led on this journey out of time, out of space…to a place of perfect peace. And it is not in the future. It is right NOW. It is not in a distant galaxy, it is right here on Earth.

In all the years of this journey with no distance, I have continually found that my own ideas are the problem. It is where I hold onto the idea of trying to be safe here, in a world of death. People appear to be getting sick and dying. I see it around me and I am dismayed.

My freedom from this nightmare comes from knowing WHO I AM. And letting that self be totally free to be itself, in spite of what anyone else says, thinks or does.

When it’s really dark, and I can’t find my way, I get on my knees and ask to be shown. It is a miracle of grace that comes from Love itself.

In spite of your misgivings, your doubts, your fears, you are healed. Why? Because you are as God created you. You are not the alter-ego that denies it. Just stop. Because ultimately, God wins. God is love and He needs you. Yes, you.

Love is letting go of fear. Anger, doubt, faithlessness, is all part of fear. It is not different. That is why I love the 12 Steps. It forces me to look at my fear. To reveal to myself the darkest thoughts I hide from myself. Then in the relinquishment these fears, I am miraculously healed. If I don’t look at these fears, these ideas of pain, I am still protecting them, so I still want them.

I don’t like being in pain. I don’t like feeling that I am all alone here. I am sick and tired of it. If I look straight at these fears, they are released and I am undone. Doors open up. I find myself in a new place. There is hope, a guiding light within me that is totally present. It may feel a bit strange or unfamiliar, but it is totally happy and joyful. Peace is joy. I am happy for no reason at all. Happiness is natural.

It is fear that is unnatural to your state of mind. Your only job is to let this fear be undone.

Be free to be yourself. Open up. Let go of all of your ideas. All your fears of future or past experiences. What if you are completely wrong about all of it? What if you have no control over anything anyway? Ha! Just let go because it isn’t true that you have anything to say about your life. It belongs to God. It belongs to Love Itself, for that is what you are.

Just open up to let God in. He is real. He is the Answer… in all ways.

Nanotubes

The world of physics became very excited with the advent of silicon nanotubes (also known as nanowires) – describing them as wonderful, but what do we do with them?

Well, two uses are of real interest to us.  The first is the ability to turn waste heat in to energy and the second is a new generation of very efficient batteries. However, what is a one-dimensional object?  Well the prefix of the word Nanotubes tells you that these are microscopic objects. They are one-dimensional structures: that means that the nanotubes have length but no width or height from a physical standpoint. One-dimensional objects (like carbon nanotubes) are ideal for conducting heat or power because it is difficult to scatter or deflect whatever is being transported. It’s like a maglev train for molecules.

The Lawrence Berkeley National Labs is California estimate that some 55%-60% of all energy consumed in the USA is dissipated, much of it as waste heat.  The concept of converting heat to electricity is not new Approximately 90 per cent of the world’s power is generated by heat engines that use fossil fuel combustion as a heat source and typically operate at only 30–40 per cent efficiency, releasing roughly 15 terawatts of heat to the environment. If this “wasted heat” could be recycled at even the 5% level, the impact globally would be enormous.  The first attempts to produce nanotubes resulted in tubes with a ‘rough’ surface – initially disappointing researchers.  However, thermoelectric testing showed that rough nanowires allowed current to flow from a heat source toward a cold source but, astonishingly, the heat did not flow. By optimizing the roughness of the wires they were able to reduce the room temperature thermal conductivity by a factor of 100. While the physics behind the effect is not completely understood at this time, it maybe that thermal transport is impeded as heat waves simply bounce off the rough contours on the surface of the nanowires, but current flow is not impeded, as electrons are not similarly slowed down.  One can imagine recharging a mobile phone with electricity produced by the user’s body heat or reclaiming the heat that is released through a car’s exhaust system to power electronic devices.

The other area of excitement is in a new generation of batteries. The new technology produces 10 times the amount of electricity of existing lithium-ion, known as Li-ion, batteries. A laptop that now runs on a  battery for two hours could operate for 20 hours, a boon to all of us who love our mobile devices.  This has been described not as a small improvement, but a revolutionary development.  Material scientists are already very familiar with silicon, and therefore it should not be long (it is predicted within five years) that we see electric vehicles whose new silican nanotube-based batteries give them the kind of performance we have come to expect from their fossil-fuelled cousins.

Teletransportation

Apart from this being a mis-quote, ie no character ever said these words on Star Trek, these emotive words conjure a vision of ease of transport, or if you understand the principles, a fear of having your body destroyed by ripping all the atoms in a body and converting them to energy and then recreating a new version of the body in a different place.  One has also to consider that quantum mechanics, especially Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, have a lot to say as to why it is not possible.  To overcome this the producers of Star Trek invented the ‘Heisenberg Uncertainty Compensator’ as a key component in their transporter.  One physics-savvy reporter was curious and asked a producer how the Heisenberg compensators worked, to which the reply was ‘they work very well, thank you’.

However, a giant leap (a quantum jump ?) has been taken in the development of quantum computers with some very excited about the possibility of a teleportation device becoming a reality as a result.   A team from the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) at the University of Maryland (UMD) and the University of Michigan has succeeded in teleporting a quantum state directly from one atom to another over a substantial distance (1 metre).  The previous efforts have only succeeded over distances of micrometres.  Other attempts have transferred the quantum information of photons over very large distances.   The newest attempt has not actually moved matter over a distance, but provides a feasible means of holding and managing quantum information over long distances (the data stream in Star Trek).  The report claims that it works 90% of the time, so some way to go before 100% reliability is achieved.

Quantum teleportation depends on entanglement, one of the strangest of the many strange aspects of quantum mechanics. Two particles can become “entangled” into a single entity, and a change in one instantaneously changes the other even if it is far away.  This theory was well known by Einstein who described it as “spooky action at a distance”.  However, for the moment I think I’ll stick to Emirates Airline to transport me from one location to another distant one.

Jesus Christ was not a man of compassion; he was a man of radical compassion. From his voluntary mission to this broken world, to his mysterious ascension back into the heavenly realm, there was no theme he stressed more in both word and deed. From his opening salvo quoting Isaiah about bringing release to they know not what they do,” Jesus exemplified a compassion far beyond what the world had seen before. Indeed, it was and is a radical compassion.the captives and good news to the poor, to his dying plea of, “Father, forgive them for

 Jesus’ stories about the Prodigal, the Good Samaritan, and his treatment of the woman caught in adultery all point to the need for a compassion that transcends the normal boundaries defined by contemporary culture, then and now. Indeed, it was and is a radical compassion.

 Five-hundred years before Jesus, another prophet of radical compassion graced our world. Gautama Buddha was an example of grace and perfect love incarnate. After finding his awakening under the Bodhi tree, the Buddha went about spreading the truth that he had discovered, a truth that when astutely applied to life, could liberate beings from endless rounds of suffering. Just as with Jesus who would come later, Buddha taught through sermons, informal talks, parables, and above all, his actions.

 Just as Christ would later set an example for his disciples to follow, the Buddha also would serve as the divine prototype for the essence of “metta,” or “loving-kindness.” In Metta, there is an internal manifestation and an external manifestation. Internally, increasing feelings of loving kindness give rise to a vital uuusense of compassion that is also based on the realization of the oneness of all things. These internal states of loving kindness and compassion result in the external manifestation, which is proactive service to the world.

 This eventually gave rise to the Mahayana Buddhist ideal of the Bodhisattva. On a theoretical level, one can accurately say that the ultimate goal of the Bodhisattva is enlightenment and to some extent this is true. However, on a highly practical level, the Bodhisattva’s highest goal is selfless service. Personal enlightenment takes a back seat to serving others, spiritually and materially. Perhaps no where in the sacred writings of the world is this reality presented so directly as in the 13^th Chapter of the Gospel of John.

 Radical compassion is compassion with legs; radical compassion is a verb. Just as the Bible tells us in the Letter of James that faith without works is dead, also, compassion without concomitant action is a lifeless phenomenon. Many sincere aspirants have the mistaken notion that the ultimate goal of the spiritual path is enlightenment. Although a sincere desire for motivation is one of our most treasured possessions, it is actually penultimate. The real aim of the spiritual journey is simply this – Sacred Service. All that we do is dedicated to the greatest good of all beings in all the worlds. Our gain is their gain, our loss is their loss, our advancement is their advancement, and it is to this sacred reality that we offer our benedictions at the end of our times of meditation and prayer.

 In the Christian faith especially, personal enlightenment takes a back seat to serving others, spiritually and materially. Perhaps no where in the sacred writings of the world is this reality presented so directly as in the 13^th Chapter of the Gospel of John.

 Imagine for a moment that you are one of Jesus’ twelve disciples and you, your band of rag tag friends, and the Master arrive at the Upper Room after a long, tedious, dusty day going about your business. You sit for a moment to catch your breath and unwind a few moments before you go wash up for the evening meal. You close your eyes for a few minutes, only to feel something or someone taking off your sandals. And to your utter disbelief, kneeling in front of you is the Master Jesus with a basin and a towel. Incredible….

 The Master taught his disciples, and all of us who have read of this amazing episode, a clear and concise example of the essence of spirituality: selfless service with a heart of humility. If only more of us, especially those who claim to be followers of Jesus, would take this lesson to heart, our world would have much less pain.

 The Kingdom of God is a divine realm of proactive compassion. This is the message that Jesus came to deliver and through his actions as well as his words, he delivered it consistently. In all that he did and he said, Jesus revealed to us the nature of God. This incarnational revelation was hinted at in the Master’s magnificent prayer in John 17. In the 21^st verse the Master says:

 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one – as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.

 In the Bible’s most well known verse, John 3:16, it is stated that for God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life. (NLT)

 Now, to make this even clearer, let’s look at one more verse in John 17. In verse three John records:

 And this is the way to have eternal life, to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. (NLT)

 Putting all this together, Jesus gave us a powerful but very real theology in this prayer and his disciple, John, fully caught its significance by saying in 3:16 that God loved the world so much that he sent his Son to save it. On God’s part, this was a perfect example of “proactive compassion” or what we often call “grace.” Motivated by the purest form of love, God was moved to have compassion on we fallen creatures, even in our blind ignorance, and he literally gave that compassion flesh by sending us the Master Jesus.

  In order for compassion to become more than just a nice idea or a sentimental feeling, it must flow out of the internalized wisdom of the ages, particularly as related to the reality of “interconnectivity.” The idea of interconnectivity, now confirmed by the field of quantum physics, has been around for many centuries and is at the core of interspiritual mysticism, that one aspect of world religion that seems to transcend culture, time, and especially theology. It is a mystical connectedness that promotes compassion and engaged action to make the world a better place for all who dwell here. In essence, it is a deep wisdom that gives flesh to grace. The great spiritual writer Kahil Gibran spoke of this interconnected reality when he said:

 Your neighbor is your other self dwelling behind a wall. In understanding, all walls shall fall down. Who knows but that your neighbor is your better self wearing another body? See that you love him as you would yourself. He too is a manifestation of the Most High.

 In India, for example, we have the story of Indra’s Net, which is strung throughout the universe with a precious jewel at the places where the cords of the net intersect. These jewels, in turn, reflect all of the other jewels. Similar to the modern discovery of the hologram, the image of Indra’s Net is filled with symbolic wisdom depicting the interconnectivity of all that is. Gary Zukav, in his groundbreaking book entitled, The Dancing Wu Li Masters tell us:

 …the philosophical implications of quantum mechanics is that all things in our universe (including us) that appears to exist independently are actually parts of one all-encompassing organic pattern, and that no parts of that pattern are ever really separate from it or from each other.

 In the Christian tradition, the writings of the great mystic teachers echo these same truths, often in symbolic and metaphorical ways. Julian of Norwich especially comes to mind as well as Hildegard of Bingen and Madame Guyon. The writings of Saint Theresa of Avila and the life and work of St. Francis also point to the interconnectivity of all life and the necessity of having a heart of radical compassion.

 The great Romantic poets like William Wordsworth and Percy B. Shelley have voices that ring loudly with the sense of the interrelated aspects of the natural world and their American counterparts, the Transcendentalists, in the writings of Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman, also echo this theme of divine connectivity. And then there is the work of that master of the arcane, William Blake who spoke of the mystic’s ability:

 To see a World in a grain of sand,

And Heaven in a wild flower,

Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,

And Eternity in an hour.

 The world that we interact with each day only appears to be solid. In point of fact, it is an intricate dance of sub-atomic waves and particles that obey none of the traditional or expected moves of predictable choreography. At its core level, our apparently solid, material world is less like classical music and more like jazz. Just when we think we have a handle on how things are, these very things change, morphing into something totally unexpected and often totally mysterious. Someone wise, I forget who, once said the life is not a riddle to be solved but a mystery to be lived. How true, and the sooner a person grasps this fundamental truth, the less frustration will appear in his or her life.

 It is not my intention to travel too far down this road of quantum physics at this juncture. Suffice to say that contemporary science is increasingly coming to grasp the same fundamental truths that mystics and shamans have voiced for many centuries. Simply put: Everything is interrelated and interdependent and when one part is affected by something, at a very core level, every other part is also impacted.

 In teaching about the interrelated aspect of the universe, I often use a simple analogy that explains these principles in a basic way. I use the example of raisin Jell-o. Imagine you have concocted a delicious tub or raisin Jell-o. Choose your favorite flavor if you like. The raisins are the important thing, here. Now, what happens when you take your index finger and thump one of the raisins? All the raisins move. Crude as this metaphor is, it makes the point that all the raisins in the bowl are connected and if one raisin moves, they all move. This is what the mystics, and the quantum physicists, are talking about when they speak of interconnectivity.

 Christian writer and teacher Elizabeth Elliot, looking at God’s wondrous creation with both attentiveness and wisdom, grasps the profundity of this theme of interconnectedness and how it illustrates a foundation of commonality between humans and other species in God’s creation:

 The closer one comes to the center of things, the better able he is to observe the connections. Everything created is connected, for everything is produced by the same mind, the same love, and is dependent on the same Creator. He who masterminded the universe, the Lord God Omnipotent, is the One who called the stars into being, commanded light, spoke the Word that brought about the existence of time and space and every form of matter: salt and stone, rose and redwood, feather and fur and fin and flesh. The titmouse and the turkey answer to Him. The sheep, the pig, and the finch are His, at His disposal, possessed and known by Him…We too are created, owned, possessed, known.

 As the church moves into the second decade of the 21^st Century it has already become apparent that great changes are in the wind. I feel some of these changes are connected with an increased understanding of how God’s magnificent creation is put together in this incredible holographic manner in which each part contains the totality of the whole and every aspect of his world exists in an interdependent relationship with every other part. This is no romantic sentimentalism I am speaking of. Instead, it is a living, vibrant reality that, when one takes it to heart, changes everything. For the church, the message of the gospel become less of “let me show you the way,” and more of “What do you need?”

 This move toward proactive compassion is a move of grace. Perhaps you are not accustomed to looking at grace that way, but grace is what we are dealing with. As stated earlier, a major part of Christ’s incarnation and our ongoing mission is to give flesh to grace. Caroline Myss makes this cogent observation in her book, Invisible Acts of Power:

 What really happens inside you when you respond to someone in need? Why do some people jump out of their seats to help another person, while others look the other way? No doubt, some people have been taught to be kind and others may be naturally thoughtful. But I think something greater than compassion or good manners is at work, something beyond the motivation of the strong to help the weak or the wealthy to help the poor. I think it is the invisible power of grace, moving between the open hearts of give and receiver. The action itself, the lifting of a heavy piece of luggage or the drink of water offered to the thirsty man, may be small. But the energy that is channeled through that action is the high-voltage current of grace. It contains the power to renew someone’s faith in himself. It even has the power to save a life.

 It should not be too difficult of an intellectual jump to see why this concept of interrelated reality should lead to a true and radical sense of compassion. What happens to me in the ultimate sense, happens to you and vice versa. When a child dies of hunger or disease in a poverty stricken nation, some part of each of us dies. We may not feel it, understand it, or even recognize it. Still, it is a fundamental spiritual and quantum truth. It is wise to remember the words of the 17^th Century poet John Donne as he spoke of the custom of the time which involved ringing the town’s bell whenever someone died:

 Any man’s death diminishes me, for I am involved in mankind;

Therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.
