I know I joke a lot on this blog and don’t tend to be serious 100% of the time. But damn, Ru is right. It may be 2013, but sometimes the way some of the gay community is still being treated is disgusting. Fortunately for me, I have lived a very prosperous life, with accepting peers, teachers, and one hell of a family. Everyone has helped me grow into the strong, confident person I am today and it severely hurts me that some people aren’t given that. They aren’t given acceptance and most importantly love. I am not sure how, what, or even where I would be in life without any of that. So thank you readers, supporters, friends, family and everyone in between. Seriously, thank you.

With that being said, I feel the need to help some of my sisters out by giving them a shout out. Hopefully you’ll check out a couple of their sites and blogs and see what they’re bitching about. Haa.

A tape has surfaced depicting a Rutgers men’s basketball coach spewing gay slurs, firing balls at players’ heads, and even kicking and grabbing players.

Rutgers invited journalists to watch a 40-minute video of Coach Mike Rice heaping abuse on his players—including calling one a “fucking fairy” and “fucking faggot”—that was complied from his first three years on the job.

It’s believed the school made the video public as damage control because it was set to air on ESPN this weekend.

Rice was suspended in December for three games and fined $50,000.

The anti-gay language was “at the core of the suspension,” according to Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti. “It absolutely concerns me. It is not acceptable.”

But Eric Murdock, former director of player development at Rutgers, say his contract wasn’t renewed because he reported Rice’s behavior. The video was actual produced by Murdock’s lawyers and he is considering legal action against the school.

Rice, meanwhile, is back at work after undergoing anger-management classes and being observed during practice by a monitor.  Pernetti, who gave Rice a vote of confidence last month, says that he’ll remain coach barring any further incidents.

We’ve never understood the strategy that prevails in male-dominated communities like team sports and the military of shouting insults to get men to perform better.  What’s that all about anyway?

It’s great that Rice won’t drop any more f-bombs during practice, but is “maggot” or “waste of space” really any better

But in last week’s Uncanny Avengers #5, writer Rick Remender stirred controversy with a scene that had a major mutant superhero bemoaning his minority identity and requesting that he no longer be identified as a mutant—or as he put it, “the ‘m word.’”

“Having an X-gene doesn’t bond me to anyone,” the mutant Avenger Havoc, a.k.a. Alex Summers, declared at a press conference. ” It doesn’t define me. In fact I see the very word ‘mutant’ as divisive.”

While most of us in the LGBT community want to be viewed as people first, and sexual minorities second, the speech rankled many for promoting assimilation over pride—be it mutant, gay or other.  It was especially galling since so many parallels have been drawn between the X-Men and gay people, both by comic writers and readers themselves.

ComicsAlliance writer Andrew Wheeler writes:

Havok’s speech makes a huge leap from, “my minority identity doesn’t define me” to a rejection of minority identity.

Havok is a mutant, but he says the word is divisive and that it represents everything he hates. He asks people not to use it. He is, definitively and explicitly, self-loathing about his identity.

There is an implication in Havok’s speech that “mutant” is a slur, “the “m” word,”—which, whether the writer intended for it to or not, very obviously draws parallels to the n-word—but it’s the word mutants use to describe themselves. It can be used pejoratively—as can “gay”, “girl”, “black”, “Jew”— but it’s still the definitive linguistic presentation of a minority identity…

The speech leaves us to believe that Havok doesn’t want there to be any word that describes his minority identity. He’s not saying that he’s not just a mutant, but that “mutant” is not among the things he wants to admit to being.

Remender (right) recently spoke with comics site Newsarama about the controversy.

I was looking to give Alex a POV that was unique, that was the polar opposite of his brother, thus defining him and giving some context to his character and his struggles, and opening the door for continued debate on the issue. Alex might wonder why people hate and fear him and his super powers, but not Thor and his super powers? Is it simply because he’s been labeled a “mutant” instead of an “Asgardian God?”

Alex has come to the conclusion the labels are the problem. [The Scarlet Witch] has a very different dilemma coming up, and ultimately a very different solution to the same question. But, again, none of these characters or their dilemmas should be read as metaphors for any real world position I personally take on anything.

The beauty of the mutant metaphor is that it’s so inclusive — there are so many ways a person can relate to it. The mistake, I think, is to apply your own personal metaphor onto it and assume everyone else sees it the same way or that your version applies more than someone else’s. Everyone sees the mutants as themselves. Everyone.

We all love these characters and love seeing them stand up against a world that hates and fears them. We can all feel that way and identify with that; it isn’t a metaphor for any one single type of real world person, I think we all get to share ownership to the identification of being/feeling on the outside to varying degrees.

Does Remender have a point? Do characters in a comic book (or movie or TV show) have to have the “right” political philosophy? Or is it more realistic to make them wrongheaded or even prejudiced?

Or should a straight, white male think twice before writing long speeches about how annoying identity politics are?

The Utah Pride Center petitioned to start a troop for middle-schoolers and, well aware of the BSA’s ban on out members and staff, brought in a straight volunteer to act as troop leader. Pride Center director Valerie Larabee even promised the troop would follow the dictates of the BSA’s ban.

But that didn’t cut it for the Boy Scouts.

The Scouts’ Great Salt Lake Council returned the entire application intact just four days later, reports the Salt Lake City Tribune. “Based on the mission of the [Utah Pride Center], we do not believe a chartered partner relationship is beneficial to Scouting,” wrote BSA spokesman Deron Smith.

So no gays scouts, no gay troop leaders and no gay groups helping out. Are scouts even allowed to have gay people in their family?

At the RuPaul’s Drag Race Battle of the Seasons on Saturday night, Alaska Thunderfuck stunned the audience with a straight-up lipsynch of Mariah Carey’s “Hero” interrupted by a unearthly howl reminiscent of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. When we were recounting the amazing number to a friend, he recalled seeing something eerily similar a few years back on YouTube: An unnamed drag queen in the Philippines got more than a 1.5 million views with her rendition of “I Will Always Love You” (below), which was also punctuated with some truly monstrous turns.

Is this merely a coincidence, or did Alaska lift this gurl’s bit? (Ms. Thunderfuck has apparently already admitted her trademark “hiiiii” came from another queen.)

Well, if Alaska is guilty, she’d hardly be the first queen to snatch a routine. Even Queen Bey has lifted her videos from Italian singers and old Audrey Hepburn movies.

Sen. Kirk made the announcement on his blog today:

“When I climbed the Capitol steps in January, I promised myself that I would return to the Senate with an open mind and greater respect for others. Same-sex couples should have the right to civil marriage. Our time on this earth is limited, I know that better than most. Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back–government has no place in the middle.”

Freedom to Marry applauded Kirk’s statement of support, noting that the Senate is “on the verge of a majority for marriage.”

“As members of Congress are talking with their family, friends, colleagues, and constituents, they come to understand why marriage matters to gay couples as to non-gay, and speak up in support of fairness and freedom,” said Freedom to Marry founder and president Evan Wolfson. “Senator Kirk’s heartfelt words about values of treating others as we’d all want to be treated in our precious time on this planet powerfully make the case for the freedom to marry — and the need for decision-makers to end marriage discrimination in the United States.”

Nope, this isn’t a belated April Fool’s joke.

Alternative-medicine proponent Gian Paolo Vanoli told Vice (Translation via HuffPo):

The vaccine is introduced into the child, the child then grows and tries to find its own personality, and if this is inhibited by mercury or other substances present in the vaccine which enter the brain, the child becomes gay.

The problem will especially be present in the next generations, because when gays have children, the children will carry along with them the DNA of their parent’s illness.

Because homosexuality is a disease, even though the WHO has decided that it is not. Who cares! The reality is that it is so. Each vaccination produces homosexuality, because it prevents the formation of one’s personality. It is a microform of autism, if you will. You will see how many gays there will be in the next generation, it will be a disaster.

We’re not Jonas Salk, but if a chemical introduced into the body causes homosexuality, how can it be passed genetically?

Though Vanoli insists homosexuality is “an illness…that does not respect the order of life” he says gays can’t be blamed for their condition, and he supports same-sex marriage in heavily Catholic Italy.

Hey, that puts him one step ahead of the Pope, another weirdo with crazy ideas about human sexuality.

Well, the healing can begin because Monsignor Meth has pleaded guilty to earning more than $300,000 by selling meth out of his home.

On Saturday, the band Garbage paused in the middle of its concert at Detroit’s Majestic Theater to let a fan propose to his boyfriend onstage.

Lead singer Shirley Manson explained how Dominic had been supportive of a sick friend of the band, and her desire to thank him for his efforts.

“As it happens I was on my Facebook page yesterday, I was on the tour bus and I was going through messages as we do,” Manson told Dominic onstage. “I saw this message from your boyfriend, Scott, and he told me that you were really super amazing.”

Manson then brought Scott out and he popped the question to Dominic, his boyfriend of four years.  As the crowd goes wild you can hear Dominic shouting an emphatic “Yes! Yes!”

Spinner reports that, as a final homage to the loving couple, Garbage dedicated the song “Vow” to Dominic and Scott.

Currently, Michigan has a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage but a judge has delayed ruling on a a challenge to that law until after the Supreme Court rules on marriage equality.

Garbage continues its tour of North America with its latest album, Not Your Kind Of People.

All the challenges came from everything I’ve done, which is radio, producing myself, marketing myself, dissecting what it is that could take me from below 14th Street to mainstream Betty-and-Joe Beercan. And we also wanted to celebrate drag as an art form, which during the post-9/11 era had really gone back underground.

When a culture is engulfed in this hostile fear, gender identity issues really have to go underground because people don’t have time for it and it fuels their fear. But everything is cyclical and I could sense that it was time again.

Also, with my own legacy, to bring these young kids through me to build a platform for them to become stars. Because, truth, I was the only bitch in the game for 20 years at this level. – Sen. Robert Casey (D-PA) announcing support for marriage equality and the repeal of DOMA after feedback from LGBT Pennsylvanians, their families and the nearly 13,000 signees to an online petition (via the Philadelphia Gay News).

A study by Facebook suggests that nearly 3 million people changed their profile photos in support of marriage equality.

According to Facebook’s report, roughly 2.7 million more people updated their profile photo on Tuesday, March 26 — a 120% increase from the previous Tuesday.

Facebook found that the surge in increased profile updates came as the Human Rights Campaign urged users to change their photo to the red equal sign in support of the historic gay marriage cases before the Supreme Court last week.

The report’s findings include:

*Roughly 3.5% of 30-year-old Facebook users updated their profiles in response to the events surrounding the HRC campaign.

*On average, 2.3% more self-reported female users updated their profile photo, compared to 2.1% more self-reported males.

* Washtenaw County — home of Ann Arbor, Michigan and the University of Michigan — saw the largest increases in profile photo changes: 6.2% of users.

*Many of the top 25 counties that showed the greatest support for HRC’s campaign were home to college towns, including Orange (University of North Carolina), Durham (Duke University), Monroe (Indiana University), Johnson (University of Iowa), Athens (Ohio University), Dane (University of Wisconsin), Boulder (University of Colorado), and Travis (University of Texas at Austin).

*Many counties housing large cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City, showed only modest increases (2.4-2.9%) in support.

The applicants all asserted that they were “open” and “avowed” heterosexuals, in keeping with Scouting policy, but the BSA was having none of it.

“The BSA is engaged in an internal discussion about its membership standards policy and is working to stay focused on Scouting’s mission,” the Boy Scouts’ PR director Deron Smith said in an email to The Salt Lake Tribune. “Based on the mission of the [Utah Pride Center], we do not believe a chartered partner relationship is beneficial to Scouting.”

The applicants said applying with the backing of the Utah Pride Center was not a stunt and included the names of ten middle-school-age children who wanted to join.

Some of the applicants were “surprised” that they were rejected — “All the adult members and youth that were submitted with the application were straight,” said one in disbelief. However, Peter Brownstein, a troop leader in Salt Lake City, seemed more disappointed than anything.

“I sincerely believe that the current Scout policy is a barrier, and without it, more young men would otherwise be able to benefit from a great program,” Brownstein said, “and [I] look forward to the future when more young men will be able to benefit.”

The BSA is expected to announce their ruling on the ban in May.

They’d all prefer another rousing round of mindless yowling. Today’s trigger: Alyssa’s assertion that she will lip sync her way to the top if she has to. Rather than question the likelihood of such an outcome (which is zero), people try to label this as “bad attitude” and “lack of sportsmanship.” Who even cares? If she wins, it worked; if she doesn’t, it didn’t. End of story. Can we for once put our lashes away without things becoming a zoo? Like, how long before the lipstick message on the mirror is rendered unreadable by all the flung feces?

Luckily, the object of this week’s mini-challenge is to shout argumentative nonsense at the pit crew loudly enough to draw blood.

April Fools! The real contest is to see who can eject a different inside liquid. (Tears, ya perv.) This seems like the kind of thing that Jinkx would nail, what with her acting background and all. Instead, she accidentally validates the running critique that she can only do one thing by using the crying challenge to showcase her comedic abilities. Maybe she was all dried out after that backstage interview about Ivy? Then again, it’s possible I wasn’t clear on the instructions, because Alaska and Roxxxy follow suit, delivering over-the-top caricatures that are sad, but not in the way that makes one weep.

Alyssa, on the other hand, comes out of nowhere with full-on waterworks. And just when I’m trying to wrap my head around a world in which Overbite McNonsense is capable of that kind of success, Detox dives in while choking back sobs to relate the desperate tale of finding her boyfriend’s corpse in her home. What’s that smell in the air? It’s Genuine Human Emotion™, by Jinkx Monsoon.

The two clear winners wipe the mascara from their cheeks and go about the task of choosing teams. Their main challenge will be to act out a telenovela-style script while deploying as many stereotypes about the Latino community as possible. I could write a thesis on this episode’s problematic relationship with race, but there isn’t room for that here. All I’ll say is I’m shocked I didn’t see one of the queens give birth to an anchor baby or predict Armageddon on a stone calendar.

Anyhow, the team selection process is optimized for drama: Rolaskatox is reunited, while warring parties Jinkx, Coco, and Alyssa (Jilyssco?) are forced to call an uneasy cease-fire. Surprisingly, it’s Alaska who feels the worst about the arrangement. After emancipating herself from the clique at the advice of the judges, she’s basically like a child being adopted back into a broken home. I hope she doesn’t act out in school or start writing lamentable poetry!

Both groups run into a critical snag before filming begins. Over on the Cojinkssa side, Alyssa’s decision to wear Jinkx’s dress saps the team of much-needed energy. It takes a lot of work to shove too much lady into not enough garment while rolling your eyes at maximum strength! Alyssa is nonetheless determined to have a giggling good time. Her ability to amuse herself has gone from cute to alarming, though: I have it on good authority that inappropriate laughter is a telltale symptom of schizophrenia. Meanwhile, Detox questions the logic behind getting rid of the garish mask she had intended to wear. I’ve never understood the girls who don’t immediately take Ru’s advice. You know that Ru decides who goes home, right? When she says she doesn’t like something, maybe take that to heart. Don’t be the idiot laughing during a crying challenge.

Team Alycocnkx (I’m beginning to understand why they didn’t get a cute name) struggles to meet even the low standards set by daily soaps. Despite her uncanny knack for overwrought facial expressions, Alyssa opts for subtlety in portraying her death-by-involuntary-orgasm. Is it opposite day up in here? If Michelle shows up with small boobs and tasteful beige slacks, I’m finding a bunker and hiding until the horsemen are gone. Coco can’t remember her lines because Wilmer Valderrama is so sexy, but even when she knows what to say, she says it blandly. Thank heavens for Jinkx, who singlehandedly carries the day by hissing, hollering, and humping the armchair until it’s pregnant with twins. (Word to the wise, though: don’t talk about serving Sofia Vergara when you’re really dishing out Amy Winehouse. Or Amy Casa de Vino, in this episode.)

Rolaskatox has an easier time of it: Alaska’s legitimately funny, and Roxxxy and Detox at least know how to make a scene. Their main obstacle is that each of them wants to be the center of attention for as long as possible, and since there are a finite number of words to deliver, they end up inserting constant dramatic pauses. Ru has to jump in and save things before their segment becomes a silent film.

The next day, the ladies do a little routine verbal sparring as they prep for the runway. At this point, throwing shade is as natural to them as tossing a ball back and forth, and twice as predictable. Everyone accuses everyone else of doing the same thing each week. You’re all special snowflakes, ladies. Now shut up. Once things have calmed down a little, Roxxxy gets Detox to open up more about her earlier revelation. While we don’t learn how specifically her boyfriend died, we do learn that he was actually her EX-boyfriend who had been stalking her for weeks, implying a grisly obsession-fueled revenge-suicide. I’m not making a joke about that. That’s horrible. I really thought getting abandoned at a bus stop was going to be this season’s low, and now I kind of wish it had been.

The catwalk theme this week is “the first thing that pops into your Republican aunt’s head when you mention Mexicans.” Sombreros! Maracas! Clothes the color of Fanta! Luckily, Jinkx’s aunt was smart enough to say Dia de los Muertos, carrying her to a sensationally spooky win. Even scarier than a sugar skull, however, is the prospect of watching Alyssa and Coco lip sync against each other, and that’s exactly what’s about to happen.

I honestly feared the two of them might run directly at each other, perhaps while extracting concealed razor blades from their wigs. Instead, they basically become a video game fight sequence: Alyssa does a spinning jump into a split while Coco whirls her mango jumpsuit sleeves into a terrifying whirlwind. Someone’s gonna throw a fireball any second! In the end, Ms. Montrese lands a fatality by audaciously pointing to her mouth while stone cold nailing the rapid-fire lyrics. The feud over the Miss Gay America crown may not be over in their hearts, but at least I don’t have to hear about it anymore.

I’m always sad to see a queen sashay away, but the end of that tired drama makes me so giddy I could issue a few Award Awards!

The first prize goes to Santino Rice, who gets a Boxed Set of RuPaul’s Drag Race DVDs to go home and review. You finally speak up at the judging panel, and it’s to say that Alyssa’s dress is the ugliest one you’ve seen in the history of this show? Let’s look back. Jiggly’s baked potato getup? Mystique’s mall realness? Serena ChaCha only left a couple weeks ago, dude. If I hadn’t seen your entire bald head recently, I’d worry that you’d suffered a concussion.

Next, I offer guest judge María Conchita Alonso a Big Bucket of Appreciation and Apologies. Seriously, thank you for mercifully avoiding statements like, “Hey, this is some minstrel bullshit. I’m slapping the next white lady who rolls her Rs.” You would have been completely justified, but the whole ordeal was uncomfortable enough already.

And lastly, I give the Penny Tration Memorial “Nice Try” Blending Brush to Jamie-Lynn Sigler. Her repeated admission that she was less talented than the contestants she was critiquing got kind of depressing. Maybe an award would cheer us both up.

ON UNTUCKED: Was there a gas leak in the Gold Bar? Were those champagne flutes filled with sparkling vodka? Did I have a stroke? No one backstage made a lick of sense. By the time Alyssa uttered the non-word “squirping,” I had accepted the television as a portal into a parallel universe with different social norms and physical laws.

Oh, children — so young, so impressionable. A wise woman once sang — incredibly on-key and on-pitch — that the children were our future and if that’s true, we’re all going straight to hell.

In North Carolina, where Winston-Salem’s Green Street United Methodist Church has refused to perform weddings until same-sex marriage is legalized, an 11-year-old and his goading parent-of-the-year decided to give thanks unto the Lord the only way they knew how — marginalizing the homose’shuals.

Armed with a “Jesus Must Be Your Lord Or He Will Not Be Your Savior” sign, the young boy warns Green Street’s congregants that the gays are “worthy of death” and by “approving” the heathens, they’re definitely going to burn for all eternity.

Kids say the damnationest things.

The New York Post reports:

Blubbering Lisa Winters was led away in cuffs after Bronx Supreme Court Justice Martin Marcus signed off a deal that’ll keep her locked up for two to six years.

She pleaded guilty to second-degree larceny on Feb. 14, in connection to her $338,000 rip-off of the Bronx Community Pride Center.

Thankfully His Honor wasn’t buying it:  “I’m amazed you are in the position you are in now,” he replied “There was absolutely no excuse.”

Winters clearly didn’t learn her lesson: In February, the Daily News reported she was back in the “fund-raising” business, soliciting donations for an animal-rescue group called A Winter’s Tail. (The News says Winters, using Scroggin’s last name)  referred to Winter’s Tail as an all-volunteer organization but it was “not listed with the state Attorney General’s Department of Charities.” (The group’s website was deactivated shortly after the article was published.)

Sadly, the Bronx Pride Community Center closed after 16 years last summer. At the time, board members blamed “economic difficulties, past debt and inability to raise [funds]” for the closure. Hopefully sympathetic New Yorkers will open their hearts—and pocketbooks—to help get it back up and running.
