Winter 08/09 – Officially a Record Breaker

Meteo France’s roundup of the winter 08/09 snow conditions proved what I had suspected, having skied more powder than piste last, that the season was exceptional. Reading the article I reflected on some of my best days on the hill.

According to experts the season was particularly remarkable in length. Substantial snowfalls at the end of October and the beginning of November meant the season kicked off early in many resorts. And sustained sub-zero temperatures from December through to February, coupled with frequent dumps of snow, meant the snow hung around long after the Easter holidays. My personal experience bears out the stats, I first dusted off my kit at the beginning of November and, while I packed it away at the beginning of May, Chamonix’s hardcore were still heading up the Aiguille de Midi at the end of the month. That’s an incredible 7 month long season!

It all started back in October when there when the first flakes at altitude and November saw significant dumps even at modest altitude. By the end of the month there was snow in the above 1000m in the Northern Alps and above 1500m in the Southern Alps and there were record snow depths above 2000m right across the French Alps. Many resorts opened early thanks to the excellent early snow conditions.

Once the season was underway it was punctuated by frequent heavy snowfalls, often at low altitude, and spread fairly evenly over the winter months. Mid-December saw a massive dump of snow of 1.5-2.5m dropped on ranges bordering Italy. Hefty snowfalls were also recorded on or around 6th January, 24th January, 6th February, 5th March and 1st April. In many resorts, including Bessans (Haute-Maurienne, 1800m), Saint-Véran (Queyras, 2040m) and Isola (Mercantour, 1915m) the amount of snow that fell over the whole season reached record breaking highs of 6m+.

The prevailing cold sets winter 08/09 apart from the two preceding winters. It wasn’t remarkably cold but temperatures remained largely below average from December through to the end of February. The cold meant the snow base was preserved until the very end of the season and that conditions were excellent even at mid-mountain level. Record breaking snow depths were recorded all season, particularly in  resorts on the Franco-Italian border such as Isola and Montgenevre.

I’m hoping that winter 09/10 will be another record breaker.

“Sounds good” I’d said when the idea of camping had come up over after a couple of glasses of Pastis. The alcohol nicely fuzzing memories of school-enforced camping trips. It was only now, entombed in my sleeping bag like an Egyptian mummy, that the memories of a night spent gripping canvas before gale force winds finally blew the tent away to oblivion, surfaced with horrible clarity.

On that occasion, water had been rocket-propelled from the sky. At least one thing had improved since my last camping trip. It hadn’t rained as yet.

Laying in the pre-dawn light, I reflected on the fact that the blow-up mattress hadn’t made the same technological leap as our new 2 second tent. The built-in pillow must have been a foot high, adding to our altitude and the air-bed itself was not flat, but had as many valleys and ridges on it as the mountains we’d just crossed. Maybe the French don’t mind sleeping on rows of inflatable brise blocks I thought.

I felt claustrophobic and struggled out of the tent, but stepping out from the pine trees, the view caught me unaware and I suddenly revised my opinion of camping.

It would seem that pitching a tent in the Alps did have a certain je ne sais quoi after all…

• Du samedi 23 au vendredi 29 Août : 7 jours dans la vallée de la Clarée (refuge Ricou), entre le Queyras et le massif des Ecrins
• Dimanche 31 Août : La Croix du Nivolet par Lovettaz (à Saint-Jean-d’Arvey), la cascade de la Doria et les Grottes du Docteur Carré
• Dimanche 7 septembre : rives ouest du Lac du Bourget pour aller jusqu’à l’abbaye de Hautecombe

Aprovechando una pequeña estancia en Ceillac (Alpes marítimos), incluyo las reseñas de cascadas y corredores de hielo que pudimos recorrer los días 18, 19 y 20 de marzo.

Acceso: debemos llegar desde la N94, ya sea desde Briançon al norte, o desde el sur, Gap-Sisteron [ejemplo en GoogleMaps]
Hay que tener en cuenta el desvío hacia Guillestre, y luego siempre hacia Ceillac. Una vez en Ceillac, seguir la carretera, sin entrar en la población, dirección las pistas de esquí, y dejar el coche en el párquing.

Couloir Y, 250m, II/3+
Aproximación: es el corredor que se ve más claro desde el párquing. Caminar en dirección a las pistas de esquí, atravesar un puente, atravesar una pista de esquí, y empezar a subir hacia el corredor. Puede estar el camino trazado, y entonces no hay casi ninguna pérdida, siempre que no os vayáis a otro corredor.
Recorrido: Tiene una única entrada, pero tras el primer largo, se bifurca, generando dos recorridos: recorrido por la derecha (couloir Y droite), y recorrido por la izquierda (couloir Y gauche),. De ahí que se llame “corredor en Y“. Los dos recorridos son de dificultad similar. Tiene R0 con parabolts, en la entrada, y la R1 se puede instalar alargando el primer largo, hasta la bifurcación, en alguno de los árboles. A partir de aquí hay algún tramo que se puede hacer en ensamble, y resaltes de hielo que convendrá asegurar.
Descenso: una vez en la salida, flanquear a la derecha, hasta encontrar una canal con un camino evidente de bajada.

Sombre Heros, 100m, II/5
Aproximación: Empieza igual que hacia el couloir Y, pero está situado más a la izquierda, así que habrá que flanquear a la izquierda un poco más.
Recorrido: Tres largos, con reuniones preinstaladas al principio y al final de cada largo. El segundo largo es el que le da la graduación a la vía. Os incluyo la foto del estado en que lo escalamos, aunque si buscáis fotos por internet, la llegaréis a encontrar muy diferente. Debimos escalar 4 ó 4+ como mucho.

Descenso: 2 rápeles por el mismo corredor.

Easy Rider, II/3, 70m
Aproximación: Este corredor se encuentra a la derecha del couloir Y, así que habrá que cruzar el puente, y buscar alguna traza que ascienda la ladera hacia la derecha. Sinó, emplear el sexto sentido. Atención, porque el canal justo a la derecha del couloir en Y, es el de descenso, Easy Rider, es la siguiente.
Recorrido: Corta y fácil, pero muy bonita. Buen ambiente. Se puede hacer en dos largos, haciendo R1 en mitad del corredor en reunión preinstalada o en el mismo hielo. R2 en los árboles de la parte superior. En una de las ocasiones, el primero de cuerda abrió con 60m de cuerda, y, a continuación, seguimos en ensamble, hasta que pudo montar la reunión superior, pocos metros después.
Descenso: Ràpel por el mismo corredor, o flanquear a la izquierda, hasta encontrar canal con camino evidente de bajada.

PD: Como véis, es una buena zona donde pasar un fin de semana haciendo varias cascadas (más de una en un mismo día), con guinda de pastel si encontráis Sombre Héros bien formada

Qui si conosce l’attività umana nel parco delle Alpi liguri. Storie di uomini che vivono a contatto con le Alpi, proteggendole e rispettandole.
La storia dell’uomo in Liguria ha molto a che vedere con queste montagne che si gettano in mare. Già a partire dalle prime popolazioni liguri il rapporto uomo/montagna era già chiaro sotto forma di rispetto reciproco.
Se da un lato l’attività umana mantiene la montagna, dall’altro la montagna con i suoi frutti mantiene l’uomo. Un rapporto srcitto nella storia e nel paesaggio della Liguria.
Andiamo quindi alla scoperta di cio’ che accade oggi sulle Alpi o poco lontano.

I VOLONTARI DI LEGAMBIENTE A MOLINI DI TRIORA

Legambiente, in collaborazione con il Parco delle Alpi liguri ha organizzato un campo di volontariato internazionale. La base de volontari è stata organizzata a Molini di Triora. I ragazzi provenienti da Italia, Francia, Irlanda del Nord, Turchia, Ucraina, Korea, Giappone si sono occupati della pulizia del bosco al lago Degno e della restaurazione di alcuni sentieri.
Un esperimento ben riuscito per migliorare e far conoscere le Alpi Marittime ed i comuni limitrofi.
