Se confirmaron los invitados, alternantes e invitados de honor para la edición 25 del Torneo Quiksilver en memoria de Eddie Aikau.

Éste evento de ola grande organizado por la ASP, Quicksilver y la Aikau Foundation, que entrega un total de 98 mil dólares en premios, se llevaría a cabo en un sólo día entre el primero de diciembre, 2009 y el 28 de febrero, 2010 cuando las olas en Waimea Bay, Hawai, sean de más de 20 pies (10 metros).

La tradicional ceremonia de inauguración se llevará a cabo el día 3 de diciembre en Waimea Bay.

La historia de Eddie:

Eddie Aikau nació en la isla hawaiana de Maui, pero se trasladó a la de Oahu con su familia en 1959.

Eddie fue el primer salvavidas de Waimea Bay, Hawai. Como surfista destacó por su capacidad para surfear olas grandes. Ganó premios como el Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship en 1977 donde participaban los mejores surfistas del mundo en ese momento como Barry Kanaiaupuni, Terry Fizgerald, Mark Richards y Shaun Tompson (campeones del mundo éstos dos últimos).

Eddie participó en una expedición en 1978 que cubría la travesía entre Hawái y Tahití para rescatar las tradiciones y cultura del pueblo hawaiano y rehacer la ruta hecha por los polinesios, en una tentativa por revalorizar las tradiciones y la propia cultura hawaianas.

La “Polynesian Voyaging Society” organizó la expedición y construyó la Hokulea, canoa-catamarán de 18 metros, réplica de la antigua embarcación utilizada por los polinesios, para partir del puerto de Magic Island con destino al Pacífico Sur.

Ya en alta mar, el capitán David Lyman (integrante de la primera expedición en 1976 con el mismo destino) notó que estaba entrando demasiada agua en la embarcación.

La tripulación se puso a trabajar para deshacerse de la mayor cantidad de agua posible y de cualquier mercancía que no fuese vital, dado que comenzaba a verse en serio peligro de hundimiento. Los vientos y el oleaje eran cada vez más peligrosos, hasta que una de esas grandes olas volcó al Hokulea. Eddie, acostumbrado a cualquier situación en el mar, se ofreció para ir en busca de ayuda ya que pensó haber visto la noche anterior luces que creyó eran de la isla de Molokai.

Eddie partió en busca de ayuda junto con dos aletas, pero rechazó en un momento llevar chaleco salvavidas porque le molestaba para remar, pero al final accedió. Algunas horas después de su partida un navío costero se acercó en dirección del Hokulea. Todos pensaron que Eddie había conseguido ayuda, pero el navío se queda parado y reanuda su marcha sin percatarse de la presencia de los náufragos.

Al día siguiente fueron rescatados por la marina de Estados Unidos. La búsqueda del cuerpo de Eddie Aikau y sus compañeros fue suspendida semanas después. Solo encontraron la tabla flotando en la zona, pero se convirtió en una leyenda.

Antton’s assignments lead him all over the planet, and LocLum is there to provide the best material.

On the last weekend the TONY HAWK X QUCKSILVER Show took place in Paris.
Combining, art, music and skating the event featured a number of local acts including Andre, Busy P and an extensive street-course set-up where just the best European skaters got an invitation for.

Estas estupendas tablas para surfear están diseñadas mas ni menos que por el buen artista parisino Andre el cual muchos conocerán por sus colaboraciones en el mundo skate y bueno le toco colaborar junto con Quicksilver para lanzar estas estupendas tablas, dicha colección esta compuesta por 11 diseños cada una con su respectivo diseño único.

La fecha de lanzamiento aun no se sabe pero en cuanto la tenga se las rolo, espero y sea para estas fechas decembrinas para todos aquellos que no saben que regalar tengan esta buena opción ó para aquellos que huyamos del frío hacia alguna playa es la opción.

If you have a mac, and don’t use Quicksilver, well, you should!

Here’s how to use Quicksilver to shorten URLs using bit.ly. This is useful for many things, but especially for posting links to twitter.

Obviously you need Quicksilver installed, and you also need to create an account with bit.ly, and get an API key. (API stands for application programming interface, which is basically a set of standard ways to interact with bit.ly using computer code.) You find the key listed under your account once you register. You’ll also need Growl, which is a program that delivers alerts from different apps to your mac.

So, to start, you open Applescript, and paste the following into a new script:

Now, find in the script where I wrote in all caps YOUR_BITLY_ID and YOUR_BITLY_API_KEY — that’s where you plug in your info from bit.ly.

Next, save this file (I use the file name “Shorten URL”) in your Actions folder, which is located on your mac in:

Home -> Library -> Application Support -> Quicksilver -> Actions

One note — make sure your Actions folder appears in the Catalog in quicksilver. If it does not, open the catalog (apple-comma), go to Custom, and use the + sign on the bottom to find your Actions folder and add it in.

Rescan the catalog, and you’re done.

To use it, first copy a long URL to the clipboard. Then, invoke Quicksilver, paste the URL in, and tab to the second box. Type “Shorten URL” (or whatever you named the script), and hit enter.

You should see a growl alert with the new URL, and it will be in your clipboard. Paste away!

Programming is all about remix, really…

Well, it’s now five months later and the best I can say for this story is that it’s finally over.  Thank. Freaking. God.  With “The Unspoken”, I feel that Mighty Avengers has hit something of a sophomore slump.  I finally gave up on this issue, and the overall storyline, about halfway through when, during a giant-sized fight with the Unspoken, Pym says “You’ve chosen to spend your time wallowing in past mistakes…not learning from them and moving on.”  I thought this was terribly apropos as it’s exactly what Slott and Gage have done.  These are both smart guys and good writers, and yet their sprawling story was exactly the kind of uninspired, MacGuffin-driven nonsense that was in style back in the 70s.  I’d like the think the bar in storytelling has risen considerably higher since those halcyon days, and yet this story utterly failed to become anything more than a less-than-average potboiler.

This story more or less seems to have been hatched for no other reason than to bring the various Avengers teams together for the upcoming ‘Siege’ storyline.  There is some value to this decision, as it was truly entertaining to see characters from the Initiative, New, and Mighty Avengers interacting with each other.  However, considering what a non-threat the Unspoken turned out to be, (which was a shame considering how much time the writers spent building him up to be a Serious Villain) and the disappointing way the Xerogen gas was finally resolved (really, Pym?  That was your great solution?  Kind of a buzzkill for the guy Eternity named Earth’s Scientist Supreme), I almost wish Pym would have called up the other teams and invited them over for beers and Xbox since it would have achieved the same goal, been just as entertaining, and taken up a fraction of the issues.

Despite an incredibly uninteresting, disappointing storyline, culminating in this issue that proved to be too little too late, I nonetheless feel like this book is headed in a direction that’s going to pay off in a big way down the road. Of the crop of Avengers books being published right now, this is the one that keeps me coming back month after month because I believe in its potential, even when the comic doesn’t live up to it.

This time I still had some tools I heard already, but didn’t find the time to have a closer look at them.

Dropbox:
I really like the idea. I just need to get over my internal hurdle, which is about uploading data into the cloud and of course, I’d never upload very private things.
And this will be one of the challenges … which data to upload and which not to upload.

What would your girlfriend or wife say if you upload pictures into the cloud, which show both you and her  … half naked or so

Another challenge will be the upload of company data. Of course, it is not allowed (is it?), but still I believe that many employees will use the services without challenging it.

Drop.io: almost the same as dropbox, but much more integrated into the web world as you use your browser instead of a folder installed on your client computer.

Cotweet: seems to be a really helpful tool to organizing multiple twitter accounts. Only thing I wonder is, if this is really going to be successful as with cotweet comes some more complexity on user management and account organization. So, I am not quite sure yet whether I am pro or cons.
Anyway, I could image that bigger companies with centralized twitter account management (TAM) can make use of it.

Quicksilver: just cool to quicker find whatever you have on your computer mainly focusing on opening programs, etc. Bad news is, that you only can use it on your Mac.

Somos muchos los que no podíamos imaginar un Mac sin QuickSIlver. Desde que apareció Snow Leopard no se ha podido encontrar un versión que funcione perfectamente, y de hacerlo, reconoce los nombres de los programas en ingles.
