Happy Father’s Day! In a mash-up of dad-centric stories/baby name news, I bring you:

MSNBC’s story on the pluses and perils of being a Junior. The predictable story? There are good and bad things to sharing your name with Pop. The interesting takeaway? The percentage of juniors has been dropping for at least forty years or so;

In a guest post at Nameberry, Brian Sargent bravely admits to being difficult when choosing names for his twin daughters, Lila and Victoria;

Speaking of dads, Emmy Jo’s husband actually sat down and toyed with Nymbler. I declare myself jealous! And her list rocks – it will be fun to see how they narrow things down.

Elsewhere online, you might enjoy:

Over at Tablet Magazine, an online journal about Jewish life, Marjorie Ingall encourages parents seeking a traditional Jewish name other than Jacob or Hannah, to Go Moe! Among her suggestions: Akiba, Felix, Hosea, Philo and, of course, Moe for boys. For girls, there’s Adiella, Hepzibah, Ida, Mehitabel, Noa, Sarai and Zillah;

The Toronto Star reports on yet another truly unusual choice. This time, the nicely named Declan is big brother to Kenzi and Saffi. The girls were almost Braeda and Saffron, but dad couldn’t remember Braeda and somewhere along the line they decided that the hippie-chic Saffron was too “stuffy”;

You’ve probably already seen Linda’s Titanic post at Nameberry, but I found myself scrolling through it again, remarking that yes, Denzil has been around forever. And there were some other fabulous names aboard the ill-fated ship – Sibley, Rossmore, Eugenie (a servant), Sigrid, Clear and Argene, just to name a few.

Got a few hours? What a Lovely Name seems like a middling name search engine at first, but don’t leave too fast. Create a logo and you can order personalized gear with your kiddo’s name. Quite cute;

Celebrity Baby Blog remarked on all the famous celeb kiddos called Max, in one form or another in their post Mad About Max. Me, I’m waiting for some parent of boy/girl twins to dub them Max and Minnie;

In starbaby news, over at Celebrity Baby Blog:

In an interview with Mary Louise Parker on the adoption of her daughter Caroline Aberash, little sister to William Atticus, the actress explained that Aberash was the name chosen by her daughter’s birth mother, saying: “I can’t give her a locket, a picture, a letter — that’s it. That’s profound to me and I don’t want to rob her of it.” It’s a poignant reminder of the power of names;

In another celeb birth, Maura West of As The World Turns welcomed a daughter called Birdie. Big sibs are Benjamin, Joseph, Katherine and Basil. Mom’s taste has certainly become more daring over time;

And Carnie Wilson welcomed Luciana Bella – Lola Sofia’s little sis. But she’d announced her name choice long ago.

But this week’s biggest news is a veritable celeb birth in the blogosphere – Elisabeth of You Can’t Call It “It” has brought home Beatrix’s little sister, Eulalie. Eulalie was Name of the Day at her suggestion all the way back in August 2008. Congrats to the family of four (!) and let me say (yet again) that Lolly is the perfect choice!

Lots of new and exciting changes in the dolly world.. First off I decided yesterday to do away with

Lots of new and exciting changes in the dolly world.. First off I decided yesterday to do away with the chaos and completely redesigned my computer nook to open up the space more in general and to be able to have all my doll stuff be better organized. I was up until four in the morning just moving furniture and getting my desktop working again. My computer desk is now directly in front of the window which means I have more light, can watch for the mailman and I can actually see my tv while I am working without resorting to using mirrors. It will take me a few days to reshelf everyone and then there shall be pictures of my newly designed work space.

Of course in the spirit of adding to the chaos I had a few more dolls arrive and I bought another one >_<

My Adorable Aubrey blythe named Quin arrived a few days ago. I was slightly disappointed with her as all her promo pictures showed her really having red hair and she is actually kind of strawberry blond. I might end up trading her with Requiem as she recently got a PWP to customize and PWP is much more of a true redhead. Alternatively I might give her a RIT dye tomorrow and try to make her hair a more desirable color. I am not sure what my fascination is with red haired blythes..

Little Kero arrived in the mail today ::dies from the cuteness:: she is even more adorable than I anticipated even for being an old style mini pullip (the new ones are much better by the way but also a lot more expensive).

I also purchased another bjd this morning ^^; she is a tiny and roughly the same size as a puki (I think she is slightly larger). She was an impulse purchase because the company that makes her was running a special so she was absolutely dirt cheap but I think in the long run I will still be happy with this purchase. I would hate for the Sugar Shack (the dollhouse I am making for the tinies) to only have one resident.

I am attending another doll meet at Requiem’s tomorrow, lots of stuff going on at it too. I am going to be receiving some additional sewing lessons and two of my blythes are getting their hair dyed (Frosty Frock is going green because green is my favorite color and her hair color is a bit too buttery for my tastes and my Violetina is getting a more attractive shade of violet). I am also bringing home Joyette permanently tomorrow and I am also bringing home Gogo for a visit .

New Zealand downhiller Vanessa Quin has been a major force in the sport since the mid 90’s. Winning the World Champs in 2004 solidified her reputation as one of the best female mountain bikers ever, and she’s certainly New Zealand’s winningest downhill racer, male or female.

Rita Langley caught up with her through the miracles of the internet, record Martha Hucker’s first Podcast.

Click here to listen: Podcast – Vanessa Quin Interview The full interview is 20 minutes long, 8.5 mb, and it may take a while to load. It’s worth the wait!

Here are some highlights from the interview:

Vanessa is still stoked on winning World Champs: “It was always a dream of mine to win a World title, so I’ll forever remember that day. It’s really neat to have that rainbow jersey in my cupboard, and it’s neat to know that I’ve done that, and that can get ticked off my list.”

“Mountain bike was still quite a new sport even when I started, and it was this huge deal in America, and you sort of just got swept up in it all. A bit like snowboarding, when snowboarding first started. Downhill was like, the extreme end of everything, and it was really awesome to be a part of it, and see the sport grow”.

“There were so many women doing it back then, compared to now. At nationals there would be double digits racing the womens, a really good field, not huge depth like the mens but really good caliber. And that was worldwide – to try to qualify for the world cup was incredibly difficult, because every woman there was on a paid ride. Women used to come in from other sports, like skiing or motocross, or BMX like me, but now they seem to come up through mountain biking, so that’s quite different.”

“There’s a lot more women freeriding now, going to Whistler and doing the downhill trails, so they’re downhill freeriders, but they’re not actually going to races. World cup level participation has stayed constant, but I think it’s a financial thing for a lot of women. I think overall there’s more women riding now than there used to be, but it used to be if you were going to ride you were a racer, whereas now there’s this whole new sphere of riding which is freeriding. That’s all about going to ride the trails and going on epic weekends away with your mates, but downhill racers do freeride too. We love to freeride, but want to race against the clock as well.”

“I’ve always said I’d love to see lots of women at downhill races, but some of them just prefer to ride cross country, or ride trails on a freeride bike. And it’s a big commitment, to get a downhill bike, and you probably won’t ride it as much as you would a freeride bike. If they can only chose one or the other because maybe they can only afford one bike, they get a freeride bike. And no-one wants to turn up to a race and be on equipment that’s not going to be competitive. But I still think the sport is really healthy, there are so many juniors riding, and that always means your sport is really healthy.”

“The cool thing about being a women on a downhill course is that, unlike the guys who can all do everything on the course, if you can step up and do some of the jumps other women aren’t, you have a huge advantage. You can up-skill yourself in training and try stuff that other women might not be doing, and that can make a huge difference. The courses we race on in New Zealand I’d say are gnarlier than a lot of World Cup ones we do, but everyone’s just going a lot faster, and it comes down to how fast you can do things.”

“The World Cup circuit is the most prestigious thing you can do. As a rider, you always aspire to get as far as you can. I’ve had the most amazing ten years of my life following that series around. I wouldn’t change anything about it, even the injuries, because it’s just been an awesome life. You make such great friends, and the races themselves are brilliant. Having been away from it this year, it blows me away how fast the women are going now – the likes of Rachel Atherton, the times she’s doing compared to the men, it’s just rediculous, I’d be getting my butt kicked!”

“I’d say to anyone getting into the sport, have a look on the internet after those World Cup races, and have a look at the footage and see how those riders do the different sections. You can learn so much from that, because you don’t get to see it at the actual races. I think that’s the best thing about World Cups, you turn up and you do them, and straight away you’ve elevated your riding because of the caliber of competition. You just know you have to go faster, and you have to work out how to go faster. At world cups it’s always great, you get loads and loads of practice and really good access to the courses so you can get heaps of runs in, so you learn a lot, a lot faster. And you can stand on the side of the track and watch fast people come down the track every ten seconds, and that’s going to make a difference to your riding. And if you’ve got all these women that you’re racing with, and you think ‘if they’re doing it, I can do it’, so you give it a go. It’s an awesome environment.”

“If I saw something in a course and thought I’m not sure if I want to ride that, I’d talk to someone I trust, and see if they think I could ride it. And then I’d either try and get it out the way early in practice, or else get the rest of the course dialled. It can depend on conditions, but as I said it’s confidence, and being able to back yourself and your ability. But sometimes you’ll go ‘no I don’t think I can do that, today’ and then you’ve got to think about how you’ll make it up somewhere else. But there’s always races where you think ‘I wish I’d done that’ or ‘I wish I’d done that better’. But that’s just the racer in all of us, to always want to do it better.”

“Neck braces I think are a personal decision. For me, I’ve broken my neck a couple of times, and the last time I did it I wanted to get back on the bike as soon as possible. I was back racing World Cups so soon after breaking it the second time, I thought I’d be a bit of a mug not to wear it. For me it was a way to get back on my bike quickly, I just knew I was a lot safer than without it. I thought it was great for me personally, but I did find it restricted my movement, and it took me a long time to get it to fit right. I had to modify my body armour, and I think anyone getting one should go down to the BMX track with their bike, and get someone to look at it while they ride. It took a while for me to be happy with it, but it can be done. At the end of the day, only a small percentage of injuries are neck or back injuries, and if it’s annoying you while your riding it may end up being more of a negative than a positive. It’s definitely a personal choice, everyone’s got the right to choose whether they wear a certain piece of armour or not.”

“I went mountain biking for the first time since my son was born the other day, and I loved it. I don’t have much time with a newborn so I was stoked to get out in the forest. I had a look at the downhill track, and they’ve built lots of lines off the sides, so I can’t wait to try them. I don’t have any plans to race or do anything crazy, but you’ll see me on the downhill track for sure. I just love it!”

Thanks for talking to us, Vanessa! And hopefully we’ll see you out on the trails soon.

Just a quick blurb on a neat webstory.

Daphne reprise is pretty sweet so far, and it’s in its early stages so you can easily catch up. There’s a newly-self-discovered-gay not-really-emo boy, for those of you who like that sort of thing. There is also a cravat. Which is PWNSOME in mention.

“Paul Newfield considers himself to be “nothing special.”
He has a beautiful girlfriend, Willow, a caring, if jock-ish older sister, and few friends, though he’s content without them. Then, when Willow dumps him, everything goes haywire. Suddenly, he’s getting friends, the jocks that used to beat him up and call him gay are now phoning him for advice, and funniest of all, Apollo (THAT Apollo) is his great-grandfather, way back on one side.
Things go even crazier when Lorrie comes into the picture (literally). He’s a snarky homosexual who happens to live next door to Paul, and is making the young painter question his already questionable sexuality.
A tale of growing up, independence, individuality, coming-of-age, and paint, Daphne, Reprise has got it all.“

I got your letter in the mail Saturday, but I didn’t really have time to finish writing and get down to the post office until today.

Planning the wedding isn’t nearly as fun as it should be. You’re gone, Chris refuses to help, and Robert’s been working overtime for the past few weeks trying to impress his boss. There’s this opening at work and he can make an extra couple thousand a year if he gets it. It’s kind of selfish of me to say that he can’t do what he’s always wanted just because I can’t handle a little reception all by myself, isn’t it? Lola’s helping out – she’s wonderful, but there’s only so much an eight-year old can do.

I miss you. We all do. You left so suddenly that we didn’t even have time to adjust to the idea of you not being here. Chris is taking it especially hard – he graduates soon, which is just a few weeks before the wedding. I was thinking of getting him that iPod he wanted, but I think what would be best for him is if you came home. I haven’t told Rob this, but I’m not sure he’s quite ready for high school. I found his report card yesterday. He failed math and was barely passing the rest of his subjects. I’d like to try to help him, but there are many good reasons that I’m teaching philosophy and math isn’t one of them. Rob doesn’t exactly seem like the best person to help Chris right now. Even though he never says anything, you can tell Chris blames him for your leaving and all my time being eaten up by these plans. He’s had to inherit your chores, too, and he’s not too thrilled about that, either.

Lola likes to help him out though, and she’s actually dealing with all of this change a lot better than Chris is. She misses you terribly of course, but I teach her the names of the wedding flowers and colours of the dress fabrics to keep her mind off missing. She’s started fluffing your pillows every night before bed just in case you come back.

Rob doesn’t like to show it, but he feels your absence too. He knows how well you talk to Chris, and how much better Lola feels when you’re here. You’re such a big help to me, and without you it’s a lot harder to take care of everyone. Chris claims he will never voluntarily cook a meal. Lola tries, but she’s still too young. Rob’s always working late now, but in a month or so he’ll be in a stable enough position to help out a bit. He regrets whatever it was he said, and I’ve talked to him. He said he was shocked and he needed time to think, but he found he doesn’t much care how you are or who you’re with. He wants you here, with Chris and Lola and I so we can be a proper family. It would be nice to know who you’re living with, too. You should bring him over for lunch sometime, especially since Rob packs his own food instead of coming home and Chris and Lola will be at school.

Everything’s so hectic, and sometimes I wish that you were still young enough to bring back. Even though your birth certificate says you’ve been an adult for the last two years, you’ll always be my baby.

The Prekkendile was once in charge of everything. It held existence between the palms of its scaly hands. Reality and Not-Reality were together as one, shifting between the Prekkendile’s claws. The Prekkendile watched them shift, looking down upon the humans as they were visited by their hopes and dreams; their nightmares and self-wrought demons.

This went on for a long time, and the Prekkendile saw many things. It saw the demons throttle their creators, and the dreams destroyed by the very ones that had brought them to be.

You Me At Six

Because accents count for originality…? I dunno. Apparently they’re big in the UK, but I can’t find that much info on them anywhere. All I know is that the lead singer’s name is Josh Franceschi (I call him Josh F.) and the backing singer’s name is, um… Max. The first song I heard by them is ‘Save it for the Bedroom’ (which is catchy and adorable) and my current fave is ‘If You Run’. I think ‘If I Were in Your Shoes’ would be liked better if I had a download.

Here are teh Random!MusicVids.

1. IIWIYS

2. Jealous Minds Think Alike

If you grab the lyrics and listen along, you are in for some the occasional vowel-related surprise. It’s almost unreal sometimes how different the English language can sound…

Also, one random thing I noted was Josh F.’s tendency to swing the microphone. Like… one day it’s gonna fly off and they’ll lose a guitarist.

Oh, another band!

This is Metro Station (in case you couldn’t tell within the first ten seconds) and Mom really likes this song. It is… extremely catchy. I think that if you put the two singers together, you’d have one well-done emo singer, instead of ‘the short fat one’ and ‘the tall skinny one’.

3. ‘Shake It’

Oh…. (strange tangent) You’ll never guess who the ‘tall skinny one’ is related to.

4. 7 Things

If you didn’t catch on (If not, I weep for you) He’s related to Miley Cyrus. (He’d Be Trace Cyrus, and he’s her brother.)

Ummm…. okay. That’s all I have in the way of MVs. Now, here’s something loosely story related. And note – I say loosely. As in, nearly not at all, but adorable anyways.

MySpace Babies! (Because they stole the FB app)

If you’ve not read Domtar5, then maybe now is a good time to. I did babies of them – Dommie and Mara respectively.

Why the slightly constipated expression? Well... he doesn't like people. And his mission involves very many of them.

Mara's okay with humans~

Next are Aivery and Aileena. If you don’t remember (from this post), Aivery’s one of my realistic fiction characters that attempted and failed dismally at suicide. If you remember (Pei and Adam, I believe. Maybe Matt, because it was when we were filming) I mentioned very much wanting to do an indie Canadian film involving a transgendered boy and a circuis. Though the circuis bit seems increasingly difficult to pull off (doesn’t ‘circuis’ look like it’s spelt wrong?) Aivery’s still here. And his snarky older sister. Aivee’s obviously the first one, with the sick-looking expression on his face, and Aileena’s the second one.

Aivee! Angst because of gender discrimination!

Anger! Because she's convinced her Dad loves Aivery more than her! When it's really mom's fault!

Remind me to give Aivery’s backstory a seperate blog post…

Okay! Time fer the Halpern Sub inhabitants!

For the Sub’s first debut, we will have the spotlight turned upon the glorious Quin…

Quin!

…and the Eloquent Tanner!

Tanner!

Okies… Quin and Tanner live together in a moderately decent Halpern Apartment in a moderately terrible district with, like, thieves and stuff. Quin works at some office job, drives a motorcycle, and paints in his spare time. Tanner’s slightly more practical (opposed to a peppy dreamer) and tends to worry a bit more about things like life, when he’s gonna get a real job (opposed to the coffee shop/waiter two-job deal he has going currently), and Quin in general. His current expression is the ‘Quin, I’m worried about you,’ face, and Quin’s current expression is probably something along the lines of ‘Oh, Tan, nothing’s gonna happen to me. You know I’m indestructible. And if something does happen? I know you’ll be there to save me~’

But little does Quin know he’s been armed with something that renders him perfectly capable of saving himself…

*cue the blood and screams and horrified expressions. and theme music~*

Okay… that’s all I have to say today.
