Hard to believe that Thursday gone I told my CBT therapist that I had been feeling so good that if I

Hard to believe that Thursday gone I told my CBT therapist that I had been feeling so good that if I were to continue feeling as good as I had been that week I would struggle to differentiate my own experience from that of anyone else. I had perhaps felt that way for a couple of days. It was something I had said to B_____ as we went walking up in the hills with our headtorches one foggy night last week. I had eaten pretty well for a while, taken a lot of probiotics, and felt, after reading Gut and Psychology Syndrome, that I was taking care of things.

I don’t know how it was I came to feel that way, only that it was as bizarre a reflection of my own microclimate that feeling that way for a couple of days, with less going on cluttering up my head than usual, led me to think that I was cured.

Friday was a tough night. I Met up with everybody from my old place of work after a break of six months or so. And I didn’t drink. Didn’t drink because I’m trying hard to keep off it, trying to stick to a meaningful anti-candida diet so I can calm down my head for good and get to the top of that hill I’ve been aiming for for months. Didn’t drink because every time I have drank, anything, over the last few months, I have seen so clearly how it only makes me angry and distracted, and irritable and lacking in concentration for the next few days. That was difficult in itself. I chatted for a while, and people were welcoming. But the group grew and grew drunk, and I struggled. By the time we moved upstairs I didn’t want to deal anymore with the complications of women coming on to me I wasn’t interested in, with the people I ended up sat next to who I had literally nothing to say to, with feeling like the dullest man in the world. I left feeling foolish and lost. People around me were having the time of their lives, struggling with the emotions they felt to people they were now not supposed to be feeling emotions for. I was making people feel uncomfortable.

I smoked that day, as I smoked the week before, in a similar position in the first leaving do for a friend of mine, one of two or three friends I have had for years and see on a reasonably regular basis. From that Friday, when I came back at what may have been little later than 12 midnight and stayed up until three with the clenched head I get after being around people and processing it all for hours at a stretch to tread water, I have fallen into a kind of ennui that sits best with the nocturnal hours. All day I find myself rudderless and anxious, and then, at ten, eleven, twelve, I make it up to the summerhouse to the typewriter with a hot water bottle.

I have rediscovered poetry, and written something maybe most days since that Friday, when I had to get something out, however rough it may have been. But the stories have been slow moving. I did finish Quiz Night last Monday, and had the idea for Sham almost immediately afterwards, but it’s moving slowly with this routine I’ve found for myself and almost wilfully exaggerated by being too self conscious about it all.

And as for my head being quiet! The last few days I have been a blacksmith – the result of opportunities that have been discussed and which provide me with a dilemma. I have made damascus steel knives, bracelets, forks and I don’t know what else. I have shown my work to various people and expressed all of the facets of a truly bellicose manner that befits my mood and the role of a blacksmith.

It struck me on Saturday that smoking does for me in much the same way as drinking and bad food. I know this. And yet I forget this, and so here we go round again.

But I’m tired. I came in an hour ago tired to the point of near collapse and have been wasting my time with this barely-coherent piece since.

Once again, I have got to get back to basics. It’s not easy.

Despite quiz night and dinner with friends, it’s been a fairly low-key week, so not a lot to say. I’ll just cover the highlights here.

Tuesday was another Murphy’s Quiz Night at the Potdeksel. Our goal is simply not to come in last, and once again, for the third month in a row, we’ve achieved that goal. This time we tied with another team for second-to-last place. One round had us putting names to the faces of child actors. I believe René said we came top in that round. We could have done even better if I hadn’t changed my guess of Natalie Wood to Judy Garland. G came through for us with Jodie Foster. Nice one!

Friday we had Willianne and Edmar over for dinner. It’s always a pleasure to see them and we always have fun. I’m looking forward to doing it all again sometime soon.

After dinner and dessert on Friday, we all headed over to the Potdeksel to finish off the evening. I met a woman who was very pro-Obama and sort of cheered me on for the US finally having a good president. I met a guy who was pro-America, and a third person who hates America and says that Americans are liars. I figure two out of three is good odds. It’s certainly nice to at least not have people hate me because of a president I didn’t vote for.

I put up our (fake) tree on Friday, with only the lights. Last year I wanted to get all blue lights, but only found one short string of blue lights, along with a longer string of multi-colored lights. Today, we headed out to Gamma (hardware store) to try to find some more blue lights, while also picking up some paint supplies. Unfortunately, their lights selection seemed to be limited mainly to outdoor Christmas lights, or fancy indoor lights only in white. I’ll keep looking, but for now, our tree is multicolored again this year, because I wanted to go ahead and get it decorated. It does look quite pretty, though. Maybe it will help get me in the holiday mood. So far, I’m just not feeling it this year.

Finally, the picture at the top is of a set of teddy bear ornaments that I’ve had for years. Andrea, my best friend at the time, gave them to me some time in the very early 1980s. I’ve held onto them, though, and they’ve moved with us from Florida, to North Carolina and now to the Netherlands. It’s nice having a fond memory of something that can be pulled out and pondered every year.

Friday night saw another great FOBSA event with the autumn term quiz night. The evening was expertly compared by our very own school governor, John Bauld. John kept us all well entertained with his anecdotes which we particularly enjoyed when they revealed the answer !

The Warrener family scooped this year’s first prize of a case of wine. Our local tree surgeon joked on arrival that he hoped there would questions on trees and clearly was delighted when there was. I’m convinced if there had been more questions on wine and chocolate, my team would have thrashed them!

There are a lot of aspects to organising this event so a big thank you goes out to all those who contributed – that’s writing the quiz, preparing it, printing it, comparing it, marking it, making the supper, baking and bringing puddings, running the bar, serving the food, setting up and clearing up! Phew – exhausted just writing it all down! Thank you all so much, a really good time was had by all and £312 was made for the school.

If you want a taste of what we had to endure, then check out a few of the questions from the Mensa round below. If you think they are easy then you must come along next time! Trust me its more tricky after a few glasses of wine!

Last night was Quiz Night again at the Potdeksel. As I’ve mentioned before, the quiz is in Dutch, unlike some of the other quiz night’s in town, although we’re fortunate that René is the quiz master, so he’s kind enough to translate when we don’t quite understand some of the questions. We can sometimes get the basic words, but lose the meaning due to the word order, so we’re making progress with understanding the language, but are a still quite a ways off from understanding properly.

There were seven teams competing last night and in the end, we came out sixth for the evening. Not too shabby, since we still beat some natives. Although I suspect that was due more to the fact that we’ve got at least four years on the two who lost, so we were able to do slightly better on the music round, which was songs from the 1980s last night. Despite my love of ’80s music, I still didn’t do too well on that round.

Today I was supposed to go clothes shopping with Merian, but unfortunately I was laid out with a severe headache today. I’m feeling better now; just a bit of a dull ache. Much better though than the piercing pain I had earlier today. I guess pride really does come before a fall.

A couple of nights ago the hubby and I were setting up for an invigorating game of scrabble (I know, we are the most boring couple on the planet!!) and we had lit a few candles on the dinning room table. Now, I’m not sure what Jiji thought that I was doing up there, but food (her usual motivator to do anything that requires, you know, moving [Jiji is our personal incarnation of Jaba the Hut {but without the hot, ill-fitting metal bikini clad Carrie Fisher on the end of a chain}]) wasn’t part of the package. So, she hops up on the table to nose around and, well, not to put to fine of a point on it, sets herself on fire. Now, something that I learned from watching the fire woosh up her side is that cat fur does not have the same flame retardant/resistant properties as wool!!! She wasn’t hurt at all, just had a bunch of her hairs singed which caused her to clean herself for hours after we brushed the cat fur charcoal off of her so that she wouldn’t ingest it. Ahhhh, the smell of burning cat fur right before bed….

Tomorrow night is Yarn Therapy here in lovely Ivinghoe Aston. I know I haven’t mentioned it too much of late but it seems that everyone decided to join a knitting group while I was traipsing around the US and Canada. So, to that end I will be in the pub two nights in a row as tonight is Quiz Night! Woo hoo! On the first Monday of each month we have these down at the Village Swan. Neither Tech Support nor I are any good at them usually, sort of a cultural relevancy issue mostly. What I mean is that people who are famous here are quite often not the same famous people as in the US. That, and we didn’t really learn Prime Ministers in the US:-) Anyway, it’s a fun night for us as we usually learn a great deal about recent the history of our village from one of our team mates as well as it being a really good time to pump people for information about, well, stuff around here as most everyone in the village without small children tend to attend.

I also want to give a great big shout out to my friend Terri Pike who got a huge mention on Cast-On today!! Go check out her very cool website with tutorials on how to felt. Just remember Terri, we were on Cast-On first

I am sending to the pond once again, the gray sock. Not only does it not fit my feet but while traveling home from the US an entire needle slid out dropping all of the stitches which, pretty bad on it’s own, was then compounded by the motion of the baggage being moved around and such making all of the dropped stitches run like wussies back down the foot of the sock until they came to the heel. This sock is not only being frog-ponded but it will have the added pleasure of being put into the time-out corner as well! Since that left me sans a sock to knit on, I got out the Krafty Koala sock yarn that I got at Woolfest this spring. It’s called Tui Sock and is a Merino/Cashmere/Nylon blend in the colorway “Undergrowth”. To say that I nearly had a yarngasam just balling it (get your mind out of the gutter!) would be an understatement. This stuff is so soft and smooshy I really would love to knit a pillowcase out of it. The color is a dark green with just hints of blue-ish in it. I will post a picture when I find a time that I can stop fondling it. Until then, I have some yarn to molest

Tonight’s Quiz Night — Staples boys soccer’s annual fundraiser — drew the largest and most diverse crowd in its 5-year history, and generated the most enthusiasm.

Virtually every varsity, JV and freshman player participated — many at tables with non-soccer friends, parents, grandparents, neighbors and teachers. When 6 rounds of questions were over — ranging from the name of the orphan in “Slumdog Millionaire” (Jamal Malik) and how many men have walked on the surface of the moon (12) to how many ribs a human body has (24) and the distance between bases on a Little League field (60 feet) — the team of Jeff Krieger and his parents, Izzy Claveloux, Colleen McCarthy, Andrew Zold and Chuck Reach finished on top of the 200-plus crowd.

Their winning gift basket included a pair of adidas Predators, Knicks tickets, a year’s membership in Fitness Edge, and numerous gift certificates.

Prizes were also awarded to the 2 runnerup teams (tie), and the last-place finishers. Dozens of attendees also won raffle prizes, ranging from soccer balls and iTunes gift cards to personal training sessions and an actual pair of scrubs from “Scrubs.”

Thanks to all the Staples boys soccer parents who helped organize, score, sell food and raffle tickets, and obtain prizes — and to all the local merchants who donated gifts.

There are a few quiz nights around the city, but I have yet to find one as entertaining as the one at The Three Lions Cafe. It takes place every other Tuesday and it guarantees a night of laughs and (mostly) friendly competition. The evening also offers two for one appies (make sure one of them are the zucchini sticks!) and great beer specials. It has become a tradition for me and my friends and we have yet to go home without at least one of the epic prize packages.

Just got back from my first Thursday night music quiz night at the Rosebud near Rothwell, South Leed

Just got back from my first Thursday night music quiz night at the Rosebud near Rothwell, South Leeds.

The Rosebud is Sam’s local pub, located on a quiet road of houses that overlook pleasant fields. It’s one of last pubs in the area that still regularly brings in guest ales and is a nice little spot for watching Leeds United with a real ale in hand.

Anyhow I met Sam and the chaps and the four us got to trying the guest ales, which were Ginger Pig by Springhead (who’s web site SEO isn’t great!), Sharp’s Cornish Coaster and Copper Dragon’s Golden Pippin.

Copper Dragon's Golden Pippin - pride of the Rosebud pub this Thursday

Firstly I ordered a half (yes, it’s a school night!) of Ginger Pig which had caused an amicable rift amongst the table; Sam believing it to be a little heavy whereas the rest believing it nice and refreshing. The elusive Springhead Brewery have created a straw coloured beer that is light and, if I’m honest a little bland and watery.

Perhaps it’s just very subtle, but this beer is named after it’s core differentiating ingredient, ginger. This is no Blandford Fly by any account, but whilst it sips easy and is refreshing and enjoyable, it’s not much more than pleasant and would benefit from a little extra complexity and depth. Not that it’s bad, I can se it been ,much better on a hot day as a refreshing light ale, but just not as entertaining as I was expecting on a dark and rainy night.

Second up came Cornish Coaster, one of Sharp’s ‘Other Beers’ (again with the poor SEO – titles of their web pages could with some improvement!). Now this beer is interesting! In my notebook I simply wrote ‘you can taste the country air’ (which would have been the first line of my review had I taken a picture of it).

This was a much darker beer than Ginger Pig, deep browny-orangey-amber, with fruit wallowing in each sip and a tang in throughout that reminded me of the aroma of proper traditional country cider. Overall strongly fruity with a measured malt finish: not quite as bitter as I’d favour but enjoyable and drinkable (and more memorable than doom Bar I thought…?!)

But, then it was on to the Golden Pippin, and one of those moments when you take a sip and go ‘now that’s a good beer’. With absolutely no Yorkshire bias, I can say that Copper Dragon definitely made a winning move by adding Cascade Hops to this beer. Because the American influence is just what edges it to a level above the previous two beers. It stood out because of it’s richness and being that little bit more complex (which might be a little ‘unfair on Cornish Coaster which I actually felt had more longevity in terms of being a session beer).

‘Pippin is citrusy/floral throughout, as well as being beautifully but not too dominantly bitter. It almost has a gentle fizz to it when first poured (it doesn’t actually) but it leaves a little tingle that livens it up in your mouth.

All in all, not a bad selection of guest ales at all, but I drank in the order that I’d count them down in too.

I shall be back to the Rosebud in the not too distant future with the camera, to do the other two beers justice and also sample some Samba from Leeds Brewery which wasn’t on, but I’ve missed at the Midnight Bell in rather of the eponymous flagship dark mild instead.

And as for the quiz? 3 half pints (and a few more full pints for the other lads!) resulted in us achieving a modest, but not last-placed 12 out of 25 on music (and we were the only team that deduced that Marvin Gaye must have been born in the 30’s, even if we didn’t get the questions on Wings right.

And as someone who isn’t a fan of Paul McCartney’s efforts post-Beatles, I’m pretty happy with that.

Let it be known that I love a good quiz night as much as the next person. As long as that next perso

Let it be known that I love a good quiz night as much as the next person. As long as that next person is not my husband, of course, who doesn’t like them much at all.

But I have to admit I was just a little bit worried when I bought ten tickets for the Teeny Tots Jazz Ballet Fundraiser for a Mothers Group Night Out. As I handed over my money, one of the organisers rushed forward to hug me and, with tears in her eyes, told me she loved me.

My train of thought went something like this: Oh shit…We might be the only table there… But then at least we’ll win… Unless, of course, we begin competing with each other… In which case it will get pretty damn nasty… And will probably end in some spontaneous naked jelly wrestling.

Actually that last thought was my husband’s. Stupid husband thoughts.

On the morning of the quiz night, I confessed my fears of a Dud Night to the Mild-Mannered Lawyer.

“Whatever happens, we’ll have good food and cheap fizz,” I philosophised. “It will be what it will be…”

“… and that is rowdy,” the MML concluded and I agreed. And we may even have then both punched the air and shouted “QUIIIZZZZZZZZ NIIIIGGGGGGHHHHHHHTTT!!!” in a spontaneous expression of our sheer excitement.

But when the MML and I first arrived at the quiz night that evening, our rowdy excitement was somewhat quelled. Something about the flourescent lighting in the cold Scouts hall and the family groups sitting around eating bowls of Cheesels and drinking soft drinks that made us both nervous.

“Do you think we can open our champagne?” the MML whispered, ever-so-slightly panicked. “Nobody else looks like they’re drinking…”

“Oh god, there are small children present!” I whispered back.

Luckily the rest of our table arrived, as did other people, and soon the hall was buzzing with conversation and our (numerous) bottles of wine weren’t quite so conspicuous.

“Of course, it will be a different story at the end of the night when we have to sneak out all the empties,” I observed quietly to the MML. “But by then, we will probably be too drunk to care.”

And sure enough, that “Beyond Care” moment came, but quite possibly a little sooner than I would have liked. I knew it was upon me the moment I accidentally tripped over something and, so that people didn’t think I was drunk, I just kept on walking. Of course a sober person might turn around to look at what they’ve tripped over. Or, arguably, not have tripped over at all.

But listen, in my defence, it was The Night After The Day Before (see “A Normal Person“) and I had just a little bit of unwinding to do.

And no, I’m not proud of my behaviour. I’m not proud that I tried to bribe the quiz night judges by giving them cupcakes. Nor that I manually altered the results on the whiteboard by adding a digit to my team’s score. Nor that I ended up screaming “Luscious Lushes!” repeatedly in the Quiz Master’s face while my stockings fell down. Nor am I proud that I texted the lyrics of The Beach Boys’ “Kokomo” to my husband – although, admittedly, that was the MML who did that and I’m actually proud of her for doing it and quite possibly would have done it myself had I not been so bloody drunk.

The next day, my husband looked at me nursing my aching head and asked: “Do you think they’ll ever let you attend one of those quiz nights again?”

“Why of course they will! Everyone in that room would have regarded me as a bon vivant of the best kind…” I replied confidently, before adding: “As long as they were as drunk as me.”

Unlikely.

Finally booked a flight to head back to New York in August. As much as I’m missing New York and can’t wait to see my friends, family and the City, part of me is most excited about getting another round of Delta’s in-flight trivia.

Have you given this thing a try? Basically you play trivia against anyone else on the plane, but the great thing about it is that it tells you the seat number of the person you’re playing with.

And for the entire flight, I have a nemesis.

I can’t get enough of it. Especially if I’m winning on a regular basis that means there is someone else on the flight who I don’t have to wave a pretentious book or piece of knowledge in front of to let them know I’m smarter. And for somebody who works a crappy day job while STILL pursuing a BACHELOR degree IN THE ARTS, this is all I’ve got. For all my abilities with trivia and assumed “knowledge” I’ve managed to shun all opportunities of using that knowledge towards making money and have utterly fucked myself. So trivia is it. It’s all I got, and without question it’s the best part of air travel.

I’ve also noticed that the better the person’s seat is that I’m beating, the better I feel about myself. If someone got to the point in life where they can afford the extra-legroom seat and I’m winning, I feel pretty good. I feel great if I’m beating someone in business class, and if I can knock off a first classer, there’s an extra kick in my step for a solid week. Now I want to take on the pilot. I managed to fail at everything else, but not this. Here – on my Priceline discount airfare that requires me to transfer twice and get in at 4 A.M. because it’s the only thing my $10/hour job can garner, this is where I get my victory.

The problem is that getting really invested in the trivia can backfire spectacularly when you get up and spy on your nemesis. One time I got really worked up because I had barely eked out a win, spectacularly coming back from far behind and winning by just a couple points after half-assing it for the first half. I got up to go take a look at the person who I had defeated – fully prepared to rub it in his or her face – just to find out that it was a 10-year-old kid who had been clicking randomly.

And back to work we go.

Call the Deadline Newsroom on 0131 561 2233" width="267" height="300" />By ALEXANDER LAWRIE

A REMOTE Scots island community has been ripped apart after a pub quiz row about what Old Mrs Hubbard kept in her cupboard.

The islander’s bickering over a bone has led Colonsay’s only pub to cancel its long-running quiz night – usually the social highlight of the week on the tiny Hebridean island.

The trouble erupted last Thursday when one team of quizzers lost by a single point after their answer of bones was ruled wrong.

Local shop assistant Keir Johnston refused to accept the official decision and started up an island-wide petition asking people to sign up if they thought the legendary nursery rhyme character did indeed keep bones in her cupboard.

But furious quizmaster Angus MacPhee then retorted by putting up posters in the hotel bar and general store announcing the cancellation of the popular quiz night.

Mr Johnston, 24, said: “This has all been blown out of proportion and it should have been laughed off at the time, but Mr MacPhee has just gone over the top.

“The quiz night is the busiest and best night on the island and I think the hotel will rue their decision to cancel the quiz.

Mock petition causes split

“It all blew up last Thursday when myself and my friend were going for seven quizzes in a row. We were leading by a point when the question about what Old Mrs Hubbard kept in her cupboard came up.

“We all agreed she kept dog bones in the cupboard and were stunned to be told that answer was wrong and that she kept nothing in her cupboard.

“We were a bit annoyed about it at the time because it meant the quiz went to a tie-break which we eventually lost, but we soon forgot about it.

“I told my boss about it the following day and he, jokingly, made up a mock petition and started asking customers who came into the shop what they thought the correct answer was.

“It was just a joke really, but Mr MacPhee, the hotel’s bar manager and quiz master, took it to heart and got really angry about it thinking we were having a pop at the him and the hotel.

“The next thing we know he’s in here putting up posters announcing the cancellation of the quiz night.

“His reaction is just so over the top.”

Bad losers

The Colonsay Hotel has been running the quiz night for over 20 years and is said to be the establishment’s busiest night of the week attracting up to 200 keen quizzers.

But quiz master Angus MacPhee, 60, is adamant he made the correct decision on the night and the losing team should have acted with more decorum.

He said: “I couldn’t believe it when I heard there was a petition going about the island asking what the correct answer is.

“It costs us a small fortune to download our questions and answers from the internet, so it’s not as if we are just making them up ourselves.

“I was raging about the petition so decided to play them at their own game and put up my own notice cancelling the whole event and informing them in no uncertain manner that they could organise it themselves if that was their attitude.

“They only began to question the answer because that particular team was going for seven in a row – I just think they are bad sportsmen.”

Islanders have now vowed to descend, as usual, on the hotel for the weekly quiz night tonight (Thurs) in the hope the management will relent on their decision.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin

Can I do you now, sir?

Can you hear me, mother?

The day war broke out

Didn’t she do well?

Don’t forget the diver

Ee, it was agony, Ivy

Evening, all

Everybody wants to get inta the act

An everyday story of country folk

Exterminate! Exterminate!

A good idea, son

Good morning, sir. Was there something?

Goodnight children … everywhere

Have you read any good books recently?

Hello, good evening and welcome -

Here’s one I made earlier

I didn’t get to where I am today without …

I don’t like this game, let’s play another game – let’s play doctors
and nurses

I don’t mind if I do

I go – I come back

I’m in charge

I’m worried about Jim

It all depends on what you mean by …

It’s being so cheerful as keeps me going

I’ve arrived and to prove it, I’m here

I’ve started so I”ll finish

Left hand down a bit!

Let’s be careful out there

Mind my bike

Nice to see you, to see you nice

Oh, calamity

Pass the sick bag Alice

Seriously though, he’s dong a grand job

Take me to your leader

The truth is out there

The weekend starts here

We have ways of making you talk

What’s up, Doc?

You bet your sweet bippy

You might well think that. I couldn’t possibly comment

You’re going to like this, not a lot, but you’ll like it

Your starter for 10

You silly twisted boy

You rotten swine

The next FOBSA event is fast approaching and it takes the form of the ever popular Quiz Night. Teams of up to six players battle it out to take pole position in the battle of the brains! Even if you think you are hopeless at general knowledge it’s a great excuse for a night out without the children and it’s amazing how you can capture the warm, beer-soaked atmosphere of a good pub quiz in a large, airy school hall!

To enter, all you have to do is pull together up to six willing teammates, give yourselves a team name, and turn up at 7.30 pm on Friday 13th November. A case of wine is up for grabs for the winning team! Team members don’t have to be Bagshot School parents, just gather any of your clever clogs friends and family and bring them along.

If you don’t have enough people to make up a team then let us know and we’ll team you up with some other players, or if you are really confident you can enter a team of less than six – now there’s a challenge!

The cost is £6 per head and includes a two course supper. And of course there will be a bar as well!

If you have any questions or need any help pulling a team together then contact me outside Cherry Class or at friendsofbagshot@hotmail.com. Otherwise to enter, just fill out the reply slip overleaf.

Look forward to seeing you there!
