One of the first bird apps that I have downloaded was “Chirp!” by iSpiny. There are two versions: one for “Bird Songs of Britain and Europe“  and one for “Bird Songs USA“. Both have about the same functionalities and they keep on adding birds. At the moment (November 22th 2009, with just another update) there are 78 birds for the European and 121 birds for the US app. You can narrow the selection by choosing states or regions. In the European version you can change the language of the app and the birds in the iPhone/iPod settings.
The app is designed in landscape mode and is kept very simple. This makes it easy to navigate. Besides the region selection one can either view the birds and listen to their songs (listen) or you can take quizzes (challenge).

All the selected birds are listed with name and a little picture. It can be sorted by name, commonness and song type. The latter is a very helpful function that might help identify a bird by its song.
Tapping on one of the birds in the list selects it, shows a bigger picture and plays its song. It also activates the wiki link that will take you to wikipedia. In the newest update there is a little “i” symbol on the picture. Hitting it turns the picture around and gives you a short description on the bird song and migration of the bird.

chirp! offers four quiz levels. The levels differ by the number of birds being presented: 10, 20, all and custom or 7, 25, 50 and custom in chirp! USA. The custom level itself is divided into easy or hard.
In all the quizzes you get 10 songs to identify and you have three lives. you lose a life when you tap on the wrong bird. The faster you identify the bird song the more points you get. In the harder quizzes you not only get three birds to choose your solution from but six.

She’s friendly, so friendly… She can catch you in a conversation and hold your attention, even if you’re a stranger to her and therefore, have technically nothing to talk about. And I don’t know how many times I’ve been rushing around uni, only to bump into her and end up talking for ten, fifteen minutes easy.

I do, very much. I look up to her and she inspires me… unknowingly, of course. FB stalking =)

There’s too many good things about Jess, and it’s hard to figure out if any of them are winning the fight to be the “best”. Some of (the very few) good things about Jess is her easy going nature, her ability to get along with all of the friends I introduce her to (and there’s been a lot!), her open mindedness, non-judgmental nature… It’s all there.

OK this is a tough one.

I have a very brief clip here which I’m trying to figure out its exact placing.  It’s about 2-3 seconds long so it’s only a brief section of a sentence.  It plays several times at different speeds to help you.  It comes from the Lost in Time DVD but I don’t think it fits where they thought it does, so I’ve taken the sound off to avoid distractions.

Can you tell what fragments of words he is saying?  or what sound it seems to your eyes/ears?  I don’t need the exact words, just a general idea of the sound structure of the words he’s speaking, so I can play through the soundtrack and figure out where it fits.

To those who have the soundtrack of this Reign of Terror episode, it’s listed as a segment from episode 5, though it might be mislabelled as a piece from episode 4.  It’s definitely not from episodes 1-3 (Ian’s clothing confirms this) or from episode 6.

I haven’t put up what I think he’s saying as that might get a sound stuck in your head which you can’t override.

I’m sure someone is clever enough to figure it out.  I’ve played through the soundtrack myself and it doesn’t seem to fit with any bit I select!

EDITORIAL

The greatest success story since Sylvia rescued the Hall from demolition is the Music Club run by Lianne Hall at the weekends, which has put the Hall on the international venue map. Members continue to express their regret that the escalating price of film hire caused the Film Society to shut down after three seasons of extraordinary and unusual showings of classic films, accompanied by detailed and well-researched notes. The Hall, the 16mm projector, the membership list and £100 donated by Steve Birch all still belong to the Association should anyone have any ideas to revive this enterprising film club.

After last year’s great Christmas party, the ever constant Vinod and Meena are thinking about organising another one, to co-incide with Bright News’ 25th Anniversary. Details have yet to be finalised.

In 2010 take the opportunity to meet and greet your neighbours. Communities are good for the spirit. Happy New Decade.
