Q: is the Ash’ari’a sect bid’aat (an innovation)? Are its aqeedah (beliefs) not in accordance with the teaching of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam?

A: With regards to Aqeeda there emerged two great figures during the third century hijri, viz Imam Abul-Hasan Ash’ari and Imam Abu Mansoor Matureedi. Most of the Ulema after them subscribe to one of the two Schools of Aqeeda espoused by these Scholars, viz the Ash’ari and the Matureedi Schools. The Hanafi scholars favoured the School of Matureedi, while Shaafi Scholars inclined towards the Ash’ari School of Aqeeda. These two great Imams do not differ in the fundamental and basic beliefs of Quran and Sunnah. Instead their differences are confined to either academic definitions or to the secondary level of beliefs that spring from fundamentals. For example, they all believe and accept that Allah has unique and uncreated Attributes, and that these Attributes were with Allah since His existence, which is from forever. However, they will differ as to the definition of these attributes in an academic sense, or in how these attributes of Allah affect human beings.

It must be emphasized that these differences are not based on personal opinion, for aqeeda is never expounded and promoted in such a manner. Instead, the aqeeda that these great Imams expounded were based on Quran, Sunnah, and the fatwas of the Sahaaba and Ulema after them.  If any of them adopted a belief different to the other, it would be supported by the above sources of Islamic teaching.

On this basis you will understand that both Ash’ari and Matureedi belong to the Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama’ah. The Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama’ah is that group who follow in the footsteps of Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and his Sahaaba. The Matureedi and Ash’ari Schools of Aqeeda do not divert from the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alaihi wa sallam and his Sahaaba. The hue and cry with regards to the Aqeedah of Matureedi and Ash’ari and the question of them not belonging to the Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama’ah, only developed recently with certain ardent and biased followers of Ibni Taymiyyah, especially the Ulema of Saudi Arabia. Before then, for centuries. there has been total and absolute unanimity among all Scholars that the Ash’ari and Matureedi are of the Ahlus-Sunnah.

We cope most of the time however there are times when we could do with the money. I am contemplating taking him to court however I am not sure if it is Islamically correct?

A: First try other avenues; get family members to speak to him, ask your local Ulama to speak to him, etc. It they do not work, your last resort will be the court and it will be permissible.

Pakistan:  A Muslim political candidate suspected of murdering a Christian has instigated calls from mosque loudspeakers for attacks on Christians, whom he blames for his May 11 election loss.

Tensions were high in Punjab Province’s Okara district after provincial assembly seat candidate Mehr Abdul Sattar, sought by police in connection with a 2008 murder, on May 13 arranged for mosque calls for violence against Christian villages.

“Burn their homes to the ground … Punish them such that they forget Gojra and Joseph Colony,” blared village mosques in the district, according to Younas Iqbal, chairman of the Anjuman-e-Mazareen Punjab, a peasant movement fighting for land rights.

Iqbal told Morning Star News by phone that that when unofficial election results were announced on May 12, Sattar’s supporters ambushed a convoy of about 100 Christians on their way to congratulate his opponent on his victory.

“They destroyed two motorcycles and threw them in the canal, besides damaging a tractor,” Iqbal said. “We went to the Okara Saddar Police Station to register a case, but the police officials refused to move against Mehr.”

Recent religious furor has been easily stoked in Pakistan. In Lahore on March 9, about 3,000 Muslims attacked Christians in Joseph Colony, destroying 175 homes, after rumors spread of an alleged remark against Islam by a Christian. In Gojra in 2009, eight Christians were burned alive, 100 houses looted and 50 homes set ablaze after a blasphemy accusation.

Sattar has targeted Christians in several villages, designated by number-letter combinations from British colonial times, particularly village 8/4-L, for voting against him, Iqbal said. Christians largely voted for Mian Yawar Zaman, also a Muslim, for a provincial assembly seat in the general election on May 11.

Iqbal said that early on May 13, Sattar’s men prevented the Christian principal of the Government Primary School, Shamoun Masih, men from entering the institution.

“They told Shamoun that since the Christians had voted against Mehr, he wouldn’t be allowed inside,” he said. “They also roughed him up, but there were no serious injuries. In 3/4-L village, Amjad Masih was harassed.”

Iqbal added that Sattar’s supporters had also forcibly occupied land of some Christians.

“The threat of violence in 8/4-L is most serious because of the tiny Christian population there,” Iqbal said of the village of roughly 600 Christians. “Sensing the gravity of the situation, we immediately informed Zaman, the legislator-elect, who pressed the police to deploy personnel in the village.”

Okara Police Chief Rao Jabbar told Morning Star News that officers would take all necessary measures to protect the Christian peasants.

“We have taken notice of the inciting speeches made by Mehr Abdul Sattar, and I have assured the Christians that we will initiate legal action against him,” Jabbar said. “Meantime, I’ve directed all police officers concerned to remain vigilant and ensure that there is no damage to life and property of the Christians.”

Police have been helpless in the face of Sattar, though, Iqbal said.

“Even though the district police chief has promised to protect the area’s Christians, the danger will always remain there,” he said. “Several cases have been registered against Mehr, but no action has been taken against him. In January this year, the police tried to arrest Mehr and his men in a murder case, but his supporters blocked three main highways for several hours, forcing the police to abandon action against him.”

Police sought Sattar in connection with the murder of Javed Masih, a Christian who had opposed Sattar in a 2008 election.

“The late Javed Masih used to tell the peasants to vote according to their conscience and not get intimidated by gangsters like Mehr,” Iqbal said. “His efforts bore fruit, and Mehr lost the general election in 2008. Unfortunately, Masih had to sacrifice his life for the cause, while several others were injured in an armed attack by Mehr’s men.”

In this month’s election, Iqbal likewise told Christians to vote for the person they thought best. Zaman belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which has emerged as the single largest party in national and Punjab assemblies.

“The humiliating defeat further stoked anger in Mehr, and he’s now bent upon punishing us,” he said, adding that Sattar has targeted no Muslims for opposing him.

“Our application against Mehr Abdul Sattar is still pending with the police, but it seems more Christian blood will be shed before he is brought to justice,” Iqbal said. “But this will not deter us from using our right to vote. We refuse to give in to the tyranny of criminals like Mehr.”

Besides village 8/4-L, the threatened Christian areas in provincial constituency PP-191 are village 10/4-L, with an estimated Christian population of 3,000; 11/4-L, where 2,000 Christians live; and 26/4-L, in which around 1,000 Christians are settled.

The peasant land movement that became the issue of contention for Sattar arose more than 10 years ago in response to what Iqbal calls the Pakistan Army’s illegal occupation of 64,000 acres in some 10 districts of Punjab. Catholic Capuchins had relocated Christians to the area of central Punjab Province to provide dairy products to the British Army during World War II, and the British turned the land over to the Pakistan Army when the sub-continent was partitioned, Iqbal said.

“At the time of partition of the sub-continent, the Christians were not given the land rights which were promised to them by the Capuchin fathers,” he said. “Because of this, Christians are at the forefront of the peasants’ movement, which is facing the powerful Pakistan Army for their due right, as the Britons had handed over the lands to the Army after the partition.”

Sattar had initially worked with the peasant cause, he said.

“But then he began creating fissures in the movement, coaxing the Muslim members not to take directions from the Christian leadership,” Iqbal said. “He then left the movement and got involved in criminal activities, subsequently landing in politics. However, Mehr’s political career failed to take off because thousands of Christians of the area don’t vote for him.”

(F) Intentionally causing serious bodily injury.— The act of a person who intentionally causes, or conspires or attempts to cause, serious bodily injury to one or more persons, including lawful combatants, in violation of the law of war.

وَأَطِيعُواْ اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ فَإِن تَولَّيْتُمْ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَى رَسُولِنَا الْبَلَـغُ الْمُبِينُ

(12. Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away, then the duty of Our Messenger is only to convey clearly.)

Surah 64 Al Taghabun Verse 11-13

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Allah informs us as He did in Surat Al-Hadid,

(No calamity occurs on the earth or in yourselves but it is inscribed in a record before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah.) (57:22) Allah said here,

(No calamity occurs, but by the permission of Allah,) Ibn `Abbas said; “By the command of Allah,” meaning from His decree and will.

(and whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart. And Allah is the All-Knower of everything.) meaning, whoever suffered an affliction and he knew that it occurred by Allah’s judgement and decree, and he patiently abides, awaiting Allah’s reward, then Allah guides his heart, and will compensate him for his loss in this life by granting guidance to his heart and certainty in faith. Allah will replace whatever he lost for Him with the same or what is better. `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from Ibn `Abbas,

(and whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart.) “Allah will guide his heart to certainty. Therefore, he will know that what reached him would not have missed him and what has missed him would not have reached him.” There is an agreed upon Hadith (that Al-Bukhari and Muslim collected and) which states,

(Amazing is the believer: There is no decree that Allah writes for him, but is better for him. If an affliction strikes him, he is patient and this is better for him. If a bounty is granted to him, he is thankful and this is better for him. This trait is only for the faithful believer.)

The Order to obey Allah and His Messenger.

Allah said,

(Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger;) Allah commands obedience to Him and to His Messenger in all that His legislates and in implementing His orders. Allah also forbids one from all that His Messenger forbids and prohibits. Allah the Exalted said,

(but if you turn away, then the duty of Our Messenger is only to convey clearly.) meaning, `if you refrain from abiding by the faith, then the Messenger’s mission is to convey and your mission is to hear and obey. ‘Az-Zuhri said, “From Allah comes the Message, its deliverance is up to the Messenger, and the adherence is up to us.”

Tawhid.

Allah states that He is the One, Whom all creations need and seek, the One other than Whom there is no (true) God.

(Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa. And in Allah therefore let the believers put their trust.) So, He first informs about Tawhid and its meaning. The implied meaning is to single Him out for deification, being purely devoted to Him, and relying upon Him, as He said;

(The Lord of the east and the west; La ilaha illa Huwa. So take Him alone as Trustee.) (73:9)

Reflect on this. In the Qur’ān, Allāh jalla wa ‘alā says:

“They ask you about the crescent moons. Say…”
“They ask you what they should give. Say…”
“They ask you about fighting in the prohibited month. Say…”
“They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say…”
“They ask you about menstruation. Say…”
“They ask you what is lawful for them. Say…”
“They ask you about the Hour, ‘When will it happen?’ Say…”
“They ask you about it as if you were eager to find out. Say…”
“They ask you about the battle gains. Say…”
“People ask you about the Hour. Say…”

Every single non-repeated honest question in this form in the Qur’ān, is followed by the command from Allāh jalla wa ‘alā to: SAY…
Except for one verse.
Allāh jalla wa ‘alā said: “If My servants ask you about Me…I am near.”
Amazing. He never told the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) this time to, “Say…”
Why? Because this is about du‘ā. There are no intermediaries needed such as previously like the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam), when it comes to du‘ā.
This is about the slave of Allāh wanting to speak to his true Lord – a Lord who doesn’t need appointments, loves to be asked, loves those who make constant du‘ā to Him, loves those who don’t depend on anyone but Him, loves that there are no intermediaries between Him and His slave, and loves to respond directly when spoken to directly and sincerely.
Allāhu Akbar. This really is a breath-taking point to consider from the amazing splendors of the Qur’ān.
The most striking thing about the beauty of an authentic orthodox Islam as practiced by the Salaf, is just this direct, pure and immediate access to Allāh when you want to speak to Him.

There are no Catholic Priests, or in a more orthodox Christian light the Son of God, or indeed various gods from a polytheistic angle such as Hinduism, or special intermediaries in Sufi mystic orders and tarīqahs, or certain Imāms with the Shī‘ah, and even the use of the Prophet within some Sunni Muslim sects, that are required to carry your message, plea or request to Allāh Almighty Himself.
No. It’s just you and Allāh. Speak to Him directly to your heart’s content. And now after realizing just how easy Allāh makes this and wants you to come straight to Him, I hope you will do so even more now. Du‘ā truly is the weapon of the Believer. Don’t be stingy or delay using it ever.

The background of Ayah 6:26

The character of the story: Abu Talib (the Prophet Muhammad’s Uncle)

Abu Talib used to defend Muhamad against the unbelievers and idolaters of Mecca; he kept warning them against harming the Prophet Muhammad, but, at the same time, he kept away from that which was revealed to him and Abu Talib was one of the unbelievers. Why is that? He used to say: it is shameful for me to leave the religion of my fathr and my grand fathers!

One day, the Prophet Muhammad went to see his uncle Abu Talib to invite him to embrace Islam. At the same time, many of the chief idolators of Mecca gathered at Abu Talib’s house, intending to harm the Prophet, to take permission from Abu Talib to maltreat and hurt Muhammad. Abu Talib did not give them permission and warned them iagainst harming Muhammad.

Abu Talib said unto Muhammad: By Allah, they will not reach to you with all their numbers until I am laid buried in the
ground. So carry on with you matter unobstructed and receive a glad tiding and peace of mind. And you have presented a religion which is most certainly one of the best religions on earth. Had it not been for fear of criticism or being insulted you would have found me a firm believer in it.

Herein, it is interesting to know that the idolators of Mecca and so were the entire Arabs used to worship Allah as the supreme God but the used to worship the idols too, they believed that the idols were the Angels daughters of Allah and they were the gate to go to Allah.

Well, what the idolaters of Mecca have done after meeting Abu Talib? They stayed away from Muhammad fearing his uncle abu Talib, but they used to forbid people from following Muhammad!

Then Allah, exalted is He, revealed the verse 6:26; it says:

They forbid the people from ffrom Muhammad and the Quran and keep away from it.

It is also said that this was revealed regarding Abu Talib, who used to forbid people from hurting Muhammad, but he did not himself believe in him!

Allah is warning the unbelievers wherever they were saying:

They do not realise that they carry the same sins of the men they were warning. It is only themselves they destroy, when they keep away from Muhammad, because the harm thereof will befall them, but they do not perceive this.

QARIB:

They forbid from it (the koran) and keep away from it. They destroy none except themselves, though they do not sense it.

SHAKIR:

And they prohibit (others) from it and go far away from it, and they only bring destruction upon their own souls while they do not perceive.

PICKTHAL:

And they forbid (men) from it and avoid it, and they ruin none save themselves, though they perceive not.

YUSUFALI:

Others they keep away from it, and themselves they keep away; but they only destroy their own souls, and they perceive it not.

“Allah has full knowledge of everything.”

Although I kind of knew where the sister in this video is coming from, the way she said it just blew my mind, she knew exactly what she had to say to prove her point, and she just said it! Now that’s what I call a feminist approach on Islam, let me tell you that! And for the sisters who are not in Islam, but they want to understand us better, I advice them to just research the way our prophet Mohammed treated his wives, and our prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was the ideal example of worship towards Allah, and every muslim should take his behavior as an example, that’s why we have the sunnah.

All in all, the subject of women in Islam is so rich to say the least, and I would really love to get into it a bit more, but for now, I would just let the sister in the video do the talking, and I will continue the subject in a future post! Allah states, within His Noble-Book, “And, do not kill someone, whom Allah has sanctified, except with justification.”.(Noble Qur’an: Chpt.6, V.151)

When it is mentioned, within this verse, “whom Allah has sanctified”, it also applies to one’s self…Each and every one of us has a life, given to us, by Allah, the Creator/Lord of the Universe, which is sanctified, sacred, full of relevance & purpose. Unfortunately, sadly, we allow ourselves to be negatively-influenced, to such a staggering degree, that we deem it necessary to terminate ourselves, to remove ourselves, via Suicide, from this Mundane-Life. My teacher/mentor, Jeffrey Kearse (AKA Imam Siraj Wahhaj), made a very poignant point, about the reality of Suicide: I heard him once say that, “Suicide is a ‘permanent-solution’, to a ‘temporary-problem’.”. I, myself, no longer want people to choose Suicide as “permanent-solutions” to their “temporary-problems”; rather, on the contrary, I, myself, as well as others who are of liked-mines, deem to establish putting a definitive end to Suicide, any way that we Humanly can. This also includes being sensitive to the sensitivities of others, to not make people feel low, to not berate them, that they no longer feel Human, or loved, or self-worthy of anything, or view Life as something that’s worth living any longer.

The following poem is a summation of all that has been mentioned previously:

We wish You were still with Us!!!

We love and miss you.

We wish that we knew.

We were too oblivious to the fact that you were in pain & needed our help.

Us losing you is like suffering from a beating, scared by a permanent welt.

Why didn’t we ask, “How are you doing?”, we should’ve looked for the signs.

You should’ve been told, by us, “I love you”, so much more often.

Question:

I am experiencing group-ism (firqa) in Islam. All are saying that they are right and all others are wrong. So as being a common man, how to decide who is right and who is wrong. Please guide me about this.

Answer:

May Allāh bless you for your concern.

In principle, it is to be noted that all humanity must be honoured, respected and treated with fairness, regardless of their faith, gender or religious persuasions.

Allāh Almighty has stated, “And We bestowed dignity on the children of ’Ādam” (Qur’ān 17:70)

That being said, it is important to know that there are two types of matters regarding the religion of Islam. ‘Fundamental Matters’ and ‘Subsidiary Matters’.

Examples of fundamental matters are, Allāh is the One and only God, the Prophet Muḥammad is the final messenger (peace and blessings upon him), the Qur’ān is the final testament of God etc.

While examples of subsidiary matters are, raising and positioning the hands in prayer (ṣalāh), the two optional prayers before mandatory sunset (maghrib) prayer, the repetition of the iqāmah words prior to congregational prayer etc.

Once the above is understood, it is worthy to point out that, in fundamental matters; our guide is the decisive primary source texts of the Qur’ān and Ḥadīth. These matters cannot be disputed once there are clear instructions in the Qur’ān regarding them.

As for the subsidiary matters, difference of opinion is acceptable based on the interpretation of ambiguous primary source texts. This is why we see adherents of various religious persuasions such as Ḥanafī, Shāfi’e, Mālikī, Ḥanbalī, Salafi schools of law etc. Each group is correct according to the interpretation of various jurists from within each school.

Hence, in light of the above, in your particular dilemma, if you feel there are groups disputing in fundamental matters, use the Qur’ān as your guide. It is advisable to get in touch with reliable scholars to help you understand the texts and their interpretations.

You are to still respect groups who may go against the proper understanding in fundamental matters, while adhering to your own view.

There have always been difference of opinion and plurality in subsidiary matters from the time of the Companions (may Allāh be please with them) until the present era. Just follow what you feel is correct, under scholarly guidance, while avoiding to impose your view upon others. Also abstain from negative behavior towards those who’s fiqh ideology does not conform with yours.

May Allāh grant us all understanding and respect.

The Background of Ayah 25

The Place: Kaabah, the Holy House of Allah present in Mecca. (Type ‪Kaaba‏ if you want to see it on YouTube or see the appendix)

The Prophet Muhammad used to pray in Kaabah.

During prayer, the Muslims have to recite a piece of the Quran.

While He was praying, Muhammad was reciting the Quran. Not far from him, the unbelievers of Mecca used to watch Muhammad with their evil eyes.

A compamy of the chief and wealthy unbelievers of Mecca came close to the Prophet Muhammad while he was reciting the Quran aiming to listen to it.

A man of this company was an old man called Al-Nadr; he was famous of the knowledge of the history of the ancient people and the past nations. Al-Nadr used to talk abundantly about bygone nations.

After listening to the Quran, the company of the chief unbelievers sid: O Al-Nadr, what does Muhammad say?

He said: ‘I swear by Him who has made His House [the Kaabah], I do not know what he is saying, except that I see his lips moving, muttering something. But what he says is nothing but the fables of the people of old, like the stories I used to relate to you regarding bygone nations’.

Then, Allah, exalted is He, revealed the verse 6:25; it says:

And there were some of them, who listen to you, when you recite, and Allah has placed veils and covers, upon their hearts so that they do not understand it, so that they do not hear the Truth and guidance.

And there is heaviness in their ears, deafness, so that they do not hear it with a willingness to accept it.

And if they were to see every sign, they would not believe in it,

So that when they come to you to argue with you, the disbelievers say: ‘This Quran, is nothing but the fables, the lies and stories of people of old.’ similar to their jokes and strange tales of bygone nations.

QARIB:

some of them listen to you. but we have cast veils over their hearts lest they understand it and in their ears heaviness; and if they see every sign they do not believe in it. when they come to you they argue, the unbelievers say: ‘this is nothing but the tales of the ancient ones. ‘

SHAKIR:

and of them is he who hearkens to you, and we have cast veils over their hearts lest they understand it and a heaviness into their ears; and even if they see every sign they will not believe in it; so much so that when they come to you they only dispute with you; those who disbelieve say: this is naught but the stories of the ancients

PICKTHAL:

of them were some who listen unto thee, but we have placed upon their hearts veils, lest they should understand hate, and in their ears a deafness. if they saw every token they would not believe therein; to the point that, when they come unto thee to argue with thee, the disbelievers say: this is naught else than fables of the men of old.

YUSUFALI:

of them there were some who (pretend to) listen to thee; but we have thrown veils on their hearts, so they understand it not, and deafness in their ears; if they saw every one of the signs, not they will believe in them; in so much that when they come to thee, they (but) dispute with thee; the unbelievers say: “these were nothing but tales of the ancients.”
