It has been a month since I have posted anything and I feel like such a failure to my blog readers.

It has been a month since I have posted anything and I feel like such a failure to my blog readers. A lot has gone on in the last month. My friend (Kristi) and I have been planning and preparing for the midnight showing of Breaking Dawn Part 1 where we will be camping outside the movie theater from 5pm til midnight. I will of course be sporting my new Breaking Dawn t-shirt and wrapped in my new Breaking Dawn fleece throw blanket. Yes, you can be jealous now.
In other news…. I was walking along minding my own business when a top cabinet door swung out and rearranged my forehead. This happened last Thursday and I STILL have a baseball size knot that is a pretty shade of black and blue. Dr. said that once I started to move around that the blood would drop to my eyes and dang if he wasn’t right. So, I have a baseball size black and blue knot with raccoon eyes to match. This last Saturday when the pain was just too unbearable, my mom takes me to the ER where they give me a pain shot guaranteed to make my loopy and pain-free. Well, it didn’t make me loopy or pain-free but I thought I was certifiably insane when I felt the hospital bed starting to shake. O.M.G I was in an earthquake. Not something you want to experience while on hospital grade pain drugs. We finally got over 4 inches of rain which is a very good thing but has anyone else had the pleasure of having 4 dogs running in and out of a doggy door during said rain? Well, I have and it isn’t a pleasant experience dealing with an irate parent who loves these dogs dearly but don’t like them when it rains.
A good friend of mine (Jessica) has stopped working in the town I live in and has gone back to her home in Florida. I will miss her so very much so I am glad for the modern technology of cell phones, texting, computers, and chatting. I hope to make it to Florida sometime and get to see her again. I love having a set day every month for a mommy and me day. My mom and I go to Wichita and go shopping for girl stuff, groceries, and medication. This last girl day just happened to be the day after inheriting my newly arranged forehead. Needless to say I nearly passed out in the mall (which if I had my mom promised she would leave me laying there acting like nothing happened. Can’t you just feel the love lol?), threw up at wal-mart (I will probably never be looked at the same by the employees), and it was a good thing I wasn’t driving because the lines on the road kept multiplying and moving around. I think that brings you up to speed for the most part. I will try to get back to my daily routine of posting. Don’t forget…tomorrow is Five Friday so I will definitely have something else tomorrow.
God Bless and Remember to Let Go and Let God,

I had planned a post on egalitarianism for this week, but Christina’s poignant essay on Monday

I had planned a post on egalitarianism for this week, but Christina’s poignant essay on Monday gave me pause. This is less a response than a musing along similar/related themes.

As some of you know, I worked as a semi-professional costumer/designer for several years. After a heart-wrenching amount of internal debate I have decided not to make it my career choice, although gifs like this make me regret the decision. As a costume designer, as an aspiring “obscenely polished” corporette (:-P), and as a pseudo-Orthodox Jewess (I call myself shomeret mitzvoth or observant), I think about clothing and appearance roughly 870,053 times a day. More if I’m at a theatrical performance or at synagogue on the High Holidays…

The HP headline is not that relevant here. Like every female bookworm with bushy hair in the past decade, I always assumed Hermione Granger was written about me. During freshman year of college, the girls on my hall who Sorted everyone in my dorm decided I was Molly Weasley, which is much more accurate. (Don’t. Mess.) But Hermione is a fashion-awkward brown-nosing do-gooder, just like my teenage self.

DRESS CODE SHENANIGANS

One of the reasons I am so interested in costume design and personal style is precisely because of tzniut* (modesty), the halakhic concept that is much broader than sartorial choice but propagates a heavier double standard than almost anything else in Orthodox Jewish culture. My family was very strict about this when I was growing up, for various reasons. My little sister routinely heads to high school in outfits in which I would have been forbidden to walk down the block. (Everyone in my family has acknowledged this, thankyouverymuch.)

*Tzniut [tz-nee-OOT] is the pronunciation in Modern Hebrew. Tznius [tz-NEE-yus] is the Ashkenazi pronunciation, which is more commonly used when the Orthodox discuss the subject.

Here is a partial list of feminine clothing restrictions I have experienced, both from my family and from religious authorities (educators, rabbis, and elder laypeople):

Skirts must fall at the very least an inch past the knees (WHEN SITTING) and preferably to the ankles

Pants are never worn except for exercise (when no males are present); baggy sweatpants or “Aladdin pants” (harem/palazzo pants) are preferable. One of my gym classes allowed girls to exercise in long skirts, as long as they weren’t denim.

Shirtsleeves should be at least halfway between your shoulder and your elbow in a Modern Orthodox environment; at least halfway between your elbow and your wrist in a central Orthodox or haredi environment. I got cited by the dress code police at least three times in day school for cap sleeves. This meant I had to put on a sweater.

The shirt neckline should NEVER go lower than the collar bone. If for some reason you must wear a dress with a plunging neckline, then: A) chances are you’re Modern Orthodox and trying to look trendy at a wedding and B) you’re going to put a long-sleeved white t-shirt under it. (I haaaaaate this look.)

Bare feet are not acceptable. No peep-toe anything. Wear tights/stockings with everything. Many religious high school girls wear striped knee highs with knee-length denim skirts as a daily uniform for YEARS. If you’re in a Modern Orthodox community in California or on a religious kibbutz, TEVAs might be acceptable. (I hope you all know that that’s an Israeli company. “Teva” means nature in Hebrew.)

No brand names or printed designs on t-shirts. I was 13 before I owned a shirt with a cutesy slogan on it, which I was only allowed to wear to drama camp. I was 15 before I owned more than one, and I bought them myself. The obvious exception here would be synagogue/youth-group apparel.

Long hair should not be loose, as that’s immodest. Married women wear wigs/hats/snoods or other head coverings. Unmarried women keep their hair braided, ponytailed, messy bun-ed, or otherwise pulled back. Short hair is really Not Done.

No more than one piercing per ear, and that one should be in the lobe only. (Males are never allowed any.)

Obviously unnatural hair dye is not expressly forbidden (usually), but there is no way it would be socially acceptable. I have only known one person to flout this rule in my lifetime, and he was a 6’1″ attractive student from a well-regarded family, attending a secular university at the time. His hair was bright orange, which made it easy to find him during Shabbat services. Within months he had shaved it all off. A girl in his position wouldn’t dare.

No raised-Orthodox person would EVER seriously consider getting a tattoo. Ever. It’s not about being buried in a Jewish cemetery (an urban legend), it’s about respecting the sanctity of your body and commemorating the Holocaust. An unnamed relative of mine has a tattoo on her body. It’s so tame that most of you wouldn’t blink if you saw it, but my 85-year-old grandfather would go apoplectic. If I got one, my father would probably stop speaking to me for weeks. I. Would. Never. (Yes, there are many compelling reasons to get one. I simply cannot stomach the idea of permanently altering my body OR of facing my father afterwards, even if it were hidden.)

I could go on, but this gives you a cursory understanding of the sartorial pressure and anxiety I was under for many, many years. Arguably it wasn’t until I got to college that I had true freedom of dress, because then there was no way my mother or rabbi could find out what I was wearing.

I hated dress codes, and I was a goody-two-shoes straight through college. Still am, most of the time. It’s not that I had a desperate need to wear pants or plunging necklines. I simply hated the constant pressure and public examination that comes with tznius culture. One or two day schools I have known actually had uniforms, but mostly they just had lists of do’s and don’ts. The do’s for women usually read something like this: white or light blue long-sleeved button-down shirt, blue/black ankle-length skirt, closed-toe shoes with socks, hair pulled back. Naturally the don’ts list was much, much longer. I would take a uniform over a dress code any day. Absolutely.

Of course, there always is a male dress code as well. Young, unmarried men are supposed to be clean-cut and shaven, except for their peyos, their forelocks. (Witness the subcultural success of The Maccabeats, the Yeshiva University all-male a cappella group. I will blog more about them in the near future, I promise.) The yeshiva uniform of white button down, black pants, and visible tzizit, is not that far off from the Modern Orthodox uniform, particularly on the Sabbath. Collared shirts are not always required but frequently expected. Shorts never go above the knee, but what straight male would wear short shorts anyway? :-p

One day I will write at length about the double standard enforcement issues in tznius culture, but today is not that day. Suffice it to say that since the unstated Standard Operating Procedure in Orthodoxish culture is that “women don’t have sex drives”, male tzniut is considered less important. (BTW, the Talmud contradicts itself several times on this issue. As the Talmud does on pretty much every issue.)

ON MAKEUP

My father set the tone for this one in our house. My parents both grew up as relative leftists, although they’re getting more socially conservative as they age. To summarize, NOT verbatim: Why on earth would you wear makeup? Pretty girls certainly don’t need it and non-gorgeous girls should highlight other attributes, if it matters at all, which I highly doubt. What is the point of shaving your legs? It just grows back. Bright red nail polish is “trampy.” <– the only time he ever used the word, and he’s come around on this particular issue after many years. My mother doesn’t like things that might harm the environment or animals.

I first wore makeup to prom (senior year, at a public high school), after getting coached by a lovely cosmetics lady at Nordstrom’s. Freshman year of college I wore it maybe five or six times total. In Fall 2011, I have a face that I literally put on for work most days. It appears natural to the untrained eye. It has nothing to do with being natural.

All of her work is fantastic

I think stage makeup is fascinating and eyeliner/lipstick are fun. I don’t wear mascara because my eyelashes are dark and it intimidates me. I don’t feel like learning how — a personal feminist-halakhic fence, if you will.

ON HALLOWEEN

Oh, you mean Goyishe Purim? :-p

This was the first year of my life that I dressed up for it, and only because I was attending a costume party. I was Avril Lavigne, circa 2002.

YM Photoshoot, 2002

I already owned half the items for this look (still rocking the same pair of Doc Martens since middle school), and a quick trip to my local army/navy surplus store supplied the rest. Note that my stomach was not visible. I categorically refused to flat-iron my hair — it would take upwards of two hours without help — and since my hair is not blonde, a shockingly large number of people didn’t get it.

What The Hell? It wasn’t that Complicated. Clearly I needed a Sk8er Boi on my arm. My costume was so Hot, and it was clearly the Best Damn Thing at the party. Don’t Tell Me none of them or their Girlfriend[s] had a pop/punk phase in middle school. (Do you think maybe I should Let [it] Go? :-p )

The two most important aspects of this costume for me were the eyeliner and the spike bracelets.

EYELINER

I’ve already mentioned my family’s historical attitude toward makeup, and being raised in a tznius culture means that I am always wary of drawing potentially sexual attention to myself. I never had a raccoon eyes experimental phase — I went from zero eyeliner to subtle eyeliner in 60 seconds. It was INCREDIBLY cathartic for me to simply, literally, paint my eyelids with black. There was no pressure to make it look “understated” or “sexy” or “not-too-sexy”, since the whole point was to look silly. I totally succeeded, and one of my weekend victories was walking in an urban neighborhood Saturday night, passing by tons of adult strangers, and not giving a shit about how I looked.

SPIKE BRACELETS

They’re not spikes, exactly. Eyelet bracelets would be more accurate but sound waaaay less cool.

the best stock image I could find

They cost $8 each, and I’m positive I could have gotten a better deal somewhere else, but I’m fine with that. They were new, real leather (sorry Mom), and surprisingly comfortable. I still haven’t replaced my broken watch, so suddenly wearing something heavy on my wrist was familiar yet distracting. (For the party, I also accessorized with red and grey plastic bangles and black hair ties.)

I thought the bracelets were goofy when I bought them, but I have fallen in love with them since Friday. I wore them on Sunday as a laugh, and I wore them to work on Monday in an attempt to recreate a portion of my costume for visiting friends.

These bracelets have nothing to do with my current personal style and are exactly the kind of things to make my parents shudder, my rabbi raise an eyebrow, and my high school teachers scold/punish. They remind me of several of my high school friends who I miss dearly.

These bracelets scream “look at me” just like an adolescent girl who is REBELLING AGAINST TEH WORLD!!!11!!1 I’m still sad I’ll probably never dye all of my hair bright blue (wrong for my coloring anyway), and at my current job I can’t put the fire-engine-red tips from last January back in.

I unabashedly adore the Disney Channel, and I love problematizing adolescence in pop culture, perhaps to a fault. On the other hand, I often feel like I went from “good tween” to “mature adult” without the standard snotty, unfocused rebellion in the middle.

I have decided to call these my power bracelets. I’m going to wear them all week.

Look for a post on Jessi J’s song “Do It Like A Dude” to appear next Wednesday, in sha’allah.

Product Thursday When it comes to make-up, I am a “less is more” kind of gal. Picture by

Product Thursday

When it comes to make-up, I am a “less is more” kind of gal.

I try to use foundation now that my strawberries-and-cream skin has decided to be red most of the year, especially at the nose and cheeks.

The one product I have the most trouble with is eye-liner. I have tried so many, it is not funny. The skinny crayons make me look like a raccoon. Some of the harder pencils don’t bother leaving enough color no matter how many times I go over one spot.

My past favorite eyeliner that did not smudge was a metallic from Wet-n-Wild but it is no longer being made. I can never find it anymore when I go looking.

I finally found a replacement.

Wet-n-Wild Coloricon in Mink Brown.

The first thing that attracted me was the price of $.99. I could have bought several different colors at that price. However, it was all a crap shoot at that point.

Once I took it home and opened the packaging to use it, I was hooked. The pencil was smooth and creamy as I drew it over the eye. I could make a thick line or a thin line, easily.

Another benefit?

The color was there, really there. When I thickened the line at the outside corners, I did not have to practically blind myself to do it.

The color is Mink Brown.

So while I get use to the better color and quality of the liner, I will have it for a long time because the pencil is about 9 inches long.

The only con is that there is a bit of a smudge and I have to use cream or lotion to remove it at the end of the day. Cleaning off old make-up should just be my routine and I am sure powder under my eyes would help the smudging be less of an issue.

Let’s just call it for what it is. A win-win situation.

Every Thursday I review a product or service. If you have a suggestion or a product that you would like me to review, please write me at bowmankaryn@sbcglobal.net.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Another day has come & gone. I hate that. How come vacation days always go by so quickly?

I am getting serious raccoon eyes from those babies! – It’s storming behind me, see it?
My old navy long sleeve shirts are definitely saving me from some sunburn! Getting in & out of the water makes it hard to keep sunscreen on – with these long sleeve shirts I only have to remember to keep it on my face & legs.

Today we went to the north side of the island to go spearfishing. Lobster season starts on August 1st, so today we couldn’t look @ lobster, but we couldn’t spear them.. I guess you could, but you run the risk of getting caught…and let’s face it. No one wants to go to jail in a foreign country, or get huge fines while on vacation.

We headed out around 8am and our first stop was Port Lucaya to get ice & gas.

I heard that Pirates & the Caribbean was filmed in Port Lucaya and that this might have been one of the boats in the movie??

Then we were on our way to the cut to go through the island to the North side.

The water on the north side of the island is much more shallow than on the south side of the island. It makes spearing fish & lobster a heckuva lot easier.

In the Bahamas you can not use dive tanks to spear anything; this means you have to snorkel on top, and then dive down to spear. (I will have video of this in a few weeks. Jeremy has to edit all of the video first).

I love to fish, but snorkeling and seeing all the fish is my favorite part of the trip. My favorite, favorite, favorite part is seeing sharks. For the most part we just see nurse sharks lounging around the rocks. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another kind of shark just swimming around. (I’ve caught other species of sharks, but never seen them when I’ve been in the water).

Chris looks like he is getting ready to go down & spear something. It’s hard to see, but he’s holding a yellow spear and he has the black rubber band cocked back so when he dives down he can let go & it will (hopefully)spear a fish!

Jeremy has a mutton snapper on the end of his spear! (That was his first “Catch”!)

That’s me & my dad checking out the scene. I think this was the big rock that had a few lobster on it, and a bunch of shark. I get so excited when I see sharks! Seriously, makes me pee a little.

Basically we just drive around the north side looking for dark spots with a white ring around them. The dark spot is a rock, and the white around it is usually a path where the fish swim around the rock. They are “donut holes.” When we see a dark spot we stop, put on snorkel gear, and bail off the side of the boat In hopes that there is a big fish (or lots of lobster) on the rock.

I have an underwater camera, but it’s old school and will require me to take it to the store and get the film developed. ( who does that these days?)

At the end of the day Jeremy decides to tell me that his digital camera is also an underwater camera. I didn’t even know such a thing existed! This is definitely on my MUST HAVE list! I think I spend enough time on the water & at the beach to justify a nice underwater camera!

On the last rock we dove on there were quite a few sharks and some good lobster. I took Jeremy’s camera and snapped a few pictures!!

SHARK!

There were 4 or 5 of these cute nurse sharks just chilling in the rocks. I’m not sure exactly how big they were. I’m guessing between 4 –5 feet..maybe?

Once we get back to Florida I will create a flickr album that has all of our pictures. It’s impossible right now to upload any amount of pictures. I’ll be happy if I can just get this post uploaded tonight!

Monday will be another day spent on the North side of the island. Lobster season opens and we have some lobsters to catch! Yum!

As a make-up junkie I find it necessary to write make-up reviews about what I wear. I will always give my honest opinion regardless of what brand it is. So my first review is mark. scanda-lash hook up mascara.

Pros:

It’s a “hook up” so it’s ultra portable, great for travel, having it in your bag for touch ups, or whatever you need.

It’s a buildable mascara. What I mean by this is that you control what look you want. If you want more of a day time look, apply less. If you want an evening eye, then just add more. It’s like having two mascaras in one.

Wand size. The wind in narrow but long and full of bristles. This means it’ll cover more of your lashes and with the bristles being close together will separate your lashes perfectly.

It doesn’t flake. I wore this all day and even rubbed my eyes and no flakes.

Comes off easily. I washed my face and didn’t experience raccoon eyes that I do with other mascaras.

Despite the size it adds a lot of volume!

It doesn’t clump.

Cons:

Size. Yes I put this as a pro, but for me personally it’s a con. I don’t go to the gym and I don’t travel much, so having a mascara this small will mean that it will run out sooner.

Smudging. After I applied the mascara some of it got on my eye lids. This happens to me with a lot of mascaras so I think it’s the way I apply it rather than the actual mascara.

I wanted to emphasize the fact that it’s buildable because this really appeals to me. I’m a full time student and work in a lab so having long luscious lashes isn’t very practical. I took some pictures to really show how you can build it up.

Here are my normal lashes:

This is after one application:

This is after the second application:

This is after the third application:

Conclusion: I like this mascara. Theres enough good qualities for me to want to purchase it for myself. I have to admit though this would not be my go-to mascara. Because of it’s size I would rather have it as my back up mascara. There have been times I’m out and about and I have to wash my face for whatever reason, and there goes my make-up. This mascara would be perfect for those emergency times.

If you’re interesting in reading more reviews about this mascara or taking a look at it check it out at my eBoutique.

Stay pretty

Dark eyes can be quite dramatic when applied with eye liner…or if you’re a raccoon. But dark circles

Dark eyes can be quite dramatic when applied with eye liner…or if you’re a raccoon. But dark circles in the form of “bags under the eyes” make us look old and tired and simply detract from the rest of our appearance. Cover up and eye makeup can help hide dark circles, but the best solution is to understand the real cause and apply an effective remedy.

Dark circles under or around the eyes can be caused by many different factors. The most common causes are:

Fatigue, lack of sleep: Excessive tiredness can cause paleness of the skin and poor circulation, which can cause the skin to appear darker.

Nutrition: The lack of nutrients in the diet, or the lack of a balanced diet, can contribute to the discoloration of the under eye area.

Stress: A too-fast-paced lifestyle, or long hours on the computer, can contribute to bags under your eyes, especially when coupled with inadequate sleep.

Heredity: Like varicose veins, dark circles under the eyes can be an inherited trait. The skin under the eye is very thin. When blood passes through the large veins close to the surface of the skin it can produce a bluish tint. The more transparent your skin, the darker the circles appear.

Allergies, Asthma and Eczema: Any condition that causes eyes to itch can contribute to dark circles under the eyes because rubbing or scratching can darken the skin. Hay fever sufferers particularly will notice under-eye “shiners” during the height of the allergy season.

Medications: Medications that cause blood vessels to dilate can cause circles under the eyes to appear darker. Because the skin under the eyes is very delicate, any increase blood flow shows through the skin.

Age: As we get older, there is a shift in the fat pad under the eye, and you may develop creases. This can looks like dark circles, because the creases cast shadows on the skin. This shadowing greatly improves with the application of fillers, such as Restylane, under the skin.

Consult with your dermatologist to determine the actual cause of the dark circles. And follow these simple guidelines to improve your circulatory health and appearance right away.

Get eight hours of sleep: This is a must for all of us, especially for people with dark circles under their eyes.

Diet: Eat a whole-foods, plant-based diet, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, coffee, tea and soft drinks.
Include green leafy vegetables and all other food items that are rich source of vitamin K. Vitamin K is very effective in treating the damaged capillaries around the eyes.

Tea Bag Treatment: Try applying a cold compress of green or black tea to increase circulation, which helps reduce swelling around the eyes. Steep for 20 minutes, then strain and chill. Place over eyes for 15 to 20 minutes, once a day, as needed.

Moisturizer: To minimize the appearance of bags, plump up skin with moisturizer, one that contains vitamin C, green Tea, vitamin K and other antioxidants.
Whether from heredity, stress, diet or any other reason, dark circles under the eyes just make us look tired. Simple diet and lifestyle changes can help reduce those circles, but to erase them most effectively consult with your dermatologist and say “goodbye” to raccoon eyes.

Wrinkles, crinkles, dark circles, puffy, baggy, saggy eyes. Everyone seems to have issues with the skin around their eyes!

Here are a few simple tips to easily de-puff and correct your under-eye circles, etc. from our skincare specialists.

Tip #1 - Eye Contact Conveys Confidence! Let your confidence shine through with longer lashes.
Latisse is the most exciting product available to safely, easily and effectively give you longer, thicker luscious lashes. See special offer below.

Tip #2- Use a proper Concealer -Choose a concealer that’s a shade lighter than your foundation. If your circles are very dark go 2 shades lighter.

Tip #3- Invest in a Vitamin K-based eye product -
Dr. Tanne Eye De-Puffer will rescue your tired eyes and strengthen capillary walls making dark circles become less visible. At our Dr. Tanne Skincare retail boutique, Ginnie, our skincare expert, will guide you in creating a skincare program that gets you the results you want and deserve.

Tip #4- Wear High Quality Sunscreen and Sunglasses -
The delicate skin around your eyes requires extra protection. Don’t forget sunscreen that contains UVB and UVA protection (ask Ginnie for sunscreen advice), and a pair of sunglasses that filter out harmful UV rays!

Tip #5- Anti-Aging Eye Treatment -At our Simply Beautiful Spa, where we are known for providing state of the art treatments, we are introducing our new Sonic Infusion Treatment: soothing sonic pulse gently massages the choicest ingredients such as vitamin C to lighten, soothe & hydrate immediately reducing fine lines and wrinkles with long-lasting results.

Tip #6- Laser Treatment -eMatrix -
Kiss those crepey lines and Crow’s Feet good-bye! From the very first treatment, this laser can rejuvenate and firm your skin by increasing collagen production, giving you smoother and more youthful eyes. Three treatments are what you normally need to achieve beautiful results.

Tip #7- Juvederm Dermal Filler -Hyaluronic Acid filler is the safest non-surgical treatment to restore the “Volume of Youth” to this delicate area. Juvederm flatters and contours the visual impact to the under-eye area, adding volume to your hollow trough and decreasing the look of dark circles. See special offer below.

Tip #8- Botox – Nothing works better to reduce the crunchy, scrunchy Crow’s feet lines around the eyes. This is the most popular and effective non-surgical treatment available
today. See special offer below.

Ok…after viewing the vids below, I will try this water & salt routine to test the outcome. I do have food allergies and Asthma today. I take an oral inhaler when the need arises (in the past I used the inhaler once or twice every other month, but I have not needed anything for the past 12 months due to my strict food elimination diet). I will report back in time with any improvements in my health.
