The CYCHI Christmas function at the new HI Yacht Club was a great success as

we enjoyed canapes and drinks on the flag deck as the sunset cast a golden
glow on the copper sails of the yacht club’s roof. Our thanks to Michael
Saville and his team for an excellent evening.

Next weeks race is a non point score with prizes for yachts with a lady
helmsperson, Bree certainly laid down the gauntlet with her win in this

I’m sure by now you have grown weary of reading race reports from me, so I will keep this one

I’m sure by now you have grown weary of reading race reports from me, so I will keep this one short and sweet. Very sweet, actually.

Typical pre-race routine – oatmeal; pb, banana and toast; coffee.

I convinced the whole family to come and support me for this second to last race of the season…so the hubby and the two furry friends all piled into the Jetta with me to travel to Woodstock, CT – about 35 minutes from my house.

Weather was near perfect – a little cold, making it tough to figure out how many layers to shed at the start…but I’d rather be a little warm in the cold than a lot warm in the heat.

Michelle and April-Anne were there – this was April-Anne’s last race and run for the season. She’ll be joining us again in the spring, if she can resist the running chicks for that long. And Michelle brought reindeer antlers for all of us to wear. With jingle bells on them, of course.

Registration was being held in a tiny golf course club house that had a roaring fire in the fire place and was just bustling with all sorts of activity. The start line was a half mile uphill from the registration area, which served as a great warm up.

And with a simple ‘ready, set, go!’ we were off!

The first mile was all downhill. As we passed the club house, I threw my jacket, gloves and reindeer antlers to Jason…and was greeted by my adorable doggies wearing antlers of their own. Totally hilarious (there are pictures – to be posted soon). As I passed the first mile marker, I was shocked to see 6:40 on my watch. Wow. This one was really gonna hurt if I kept that up. But then I realized that I had been running entirely downhill, so that must have had something to do with that crazy split.

As we approached the turnaround point, the leaders were all passing by us on the opposite of the road. I think I counted two or three females ahead of me. Holy cow….how did that happen?

Mile two ticked off in 7:09 and we started the gradual climb back up the hill. It was at this point where all the negotiating began…’Slow down, wait for Michelle and April and just enjoy the race. Why must you kill yourself at these things?’…and other similar thoughts crossed my mind. But I also started thinking about how cool it would be to get a sub 22:00 time…so onward I pushed.

Mile three started to get hard and I felt like I was hitting some kind of mini ‘Wall’ out there. I hit the mile three marker in 7:31 and knew I just had a little farther to go. There was no kick left really…I had once again managed to leave it all out there and couldn’t wait to stop running. I was in a 2/2 breathing pattern for the entire race. Damn, that was really hard to maintain (not to mention all the throat-clearing and spit – eww).

Hit the finish line in 22:09 – so close! But still a PR and a great time as far as I was concerned.

My body wasn’t feeling so great immediately after I stopped – some weird and wild cramping going on in my intestines. I crunched into a little ball for a minute or two and then we walked back down the hill to the clubhouse. By the time we got to there, I was feeling much better.

At the awards ceremony, I learned that I was first in my division! And I think I was the third or fourth female across the line. Michelle placed third in the same division as me, and April placed third in her division as well.

The Running Chicks, a winning team!

(PS – AND, and, and…My pregnant arch-nemesis missed this race…so I have slipped into first place – age division – for the Race Series that we are in!)

Yesterday morning, I had a chance to talk to sports executives working in a multinational company wh

Yesterday morning, I had a chance to talk to sports executives working in a multinational company which is a major sponsor in Sports Events in the country and even in Asia. It was a casual meeting and we had a brief conversation about running in the country, the Standard Charter’s Singapore Marathon and other running related activities.

Our conversation led to our present standing in the 25th SEA Games of which two of the executives openly told me that they just arrived from Vientiane, Laos to observe the preparation, opening ceremony, and initial conduct of the Games. I asked if it is true that our National Athletes arrived in two groups, in two separate “chartered” planes—one group of athletes was supported by POC and the other group of athletes was supported by PSC. POC is the Philippinje Olympic Committee which is headed by Jose “Peping” Cojuangco while the PSC is the Philippine Sports Commission which is headed by Harry Angping.

If you have been reading the Sports Pages of our national dailies for the past months, you would know that there is an animosity between these two sports institutions in the country. The PSC is a government entity which is responsible for our national sports excellence by providing the necessary funds to the Sports Federations and to our elite athletes; while the POC is the country’s representative organization of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which is responsible in sending our National Athletes to International Games under the auspices of the IOC. SEA Games and ASIAN Games are the only International Games under the auspices of the IOC. In short, funding for training & incentives for medalists is the responsibilities of PSC; while the expenses for the travel of athletes to IOC’s International Games is the responsibility of the POC. I might be wrong but this is my impression about their arrangements when sending our National Athletes to such IOC meets/games.

Anyway, it is true that our athletes arrived in Laos in two separate “chartered” flights direct from Manila. My source of information could not determine if it is really true that one plane was boarded by PSC-supported athletes while the other plane was boarded by additional athletes recommended by POC and POC Officials. I also confirmed that there were no officials from the PSC who joined the delegation & party. However, by knowing that the delegation of our country nearly reached 400, there is a need for two planes to ferry our athletes and officials.

You might be wondering why our delegation was able to get a chartered flight from the Philippine Air Lines. It is because the release of the funds to buy for the tickets for our athletes and officials were delayed and in turn it would be expensive to buy them with few days before the scheduled departure. The other reason for the chartered flight is that, there is no direct flight from Manila to Laos and our delagation has to change plane from Bangkok/Saigon/Hongkong and this will entail additional expenses and more hours for the trip.

And now this is the worst part, the executives who were present during the 25th SEA Games Opening Ceremonies almost cried when they saw our Philippine Delegation marching at the Oval Track in “Athletic Attire” (Athletic Jacket; jogging pants & rubber shoes) while the other Country Delegations were wearing Suits & Leather Shoes. I was told that the Vietnam delegation wore a Barong Tagalog- look alike with “crumpled” look (“Gusot Mayaman Barong”). And the best part among the worst news is that, the uniform that our delegation wore during the Opening Ceremony was given on the day before the delegation left Manila. (Note: If you want to see a picture of our delegation during the Opening Ceremony, browse at www.laoseagames2009.com and click at the Photo Gallery on the left side of the site. Look for picture #38 and click it).

I am not making a post showing a “crab mentality” attitude in our sports excellence program but I am trying to show the prevailing situation in our sports, moreso, with the “message” we are showing to our neighboring countries and to our people. We always talk and read about “unity in purpose” and “unity among us” but for us, as a nation competitng with other nations in an international sports meet, we should show our best.

The good news is that Ed “Vertek” Buenavista and Jo-An Banayag won the Gold Medals in the Men’s & Ladies’ Marathon Race in this morning’s 25th SEA Games Athletics events. Their finish times at 2:21+ and 2:46+ hours, respectively are good enough to win the gold medal with a cash incentive of P 300,000 each, but it is still far from the ASIAN and OLYMPIC Games’ standards. Nevertheless, what is important is that we got the GOLD in the most important running event for us who are long distance runners!

Whatever will be the final results of the 25th SEA Games, I hope there will be no “finger pointing” as to who should be blamed for our dismal performance and lowest output in the history of the SEA Games. However, I am still sure of the following assessment: (1) that “politics” and “sports” do not mix, and (2) for the government and the private sector to help in the funding and support to our athletes.

Let us see what will happen to our National Team in the next ASIAN Games which will be held in 2010, next year!

Good morning sailors,

Race 2 of the Cruise Indigo series and race 13 of the Fantasea Cruises Club
Championship was sailed in a steady 14 knot easterly making for an easy
reach to Henning and for most a single leg work to the finish. The lee of
Henning island as always caused a few problems including the very rare sight
of Darren falling off his windsurfer, certainly something I’ve never seen
before.

The CYC is having a Christmas function at the new Yacht Club on Monday 21st
December from 6-8pm. The cost is $20 for members and $40 for guests, this is
a very heavily subsidised price for food and we thank HIE and the Yacht Club
for their support. We are restricted to 100 and ask that members only bring
one guest each, tickets can be purchased from Georgina and the close off for
tickets is Friday 18th. Your ticket will also enter you into the raffle for
some wonderful prizes. Dress is smart casual.

Good morning sailors,

Race 1 of the Cruise Indigo series was heralded with a steady 8-10kt
nor’easter that shed a different light on the course particularly with the
incoming tide. Some close racing ensued as we beat our way down to Pelican
Rock then eased sheets and set kites on the run home with the wind and tide
behind us.
It was a rare race this season to not have Run A Muk first across the line,
as this week Adrenalin managed to haul her in and beat her across the line
by a mere 6 seconds.
December being a 5 Wednesday month will have 4 races in the Cruise Indigo
Series and the fifth Wednesday will be a non point score and lady skipper
race.

Cruise Indigo Race 1 Fantasea Club Championship
1st Adrenalin Run A Muk 22.25pts
2nd Hedonism +2.51mins Adrenalin 27.5
3rd Sunmaid +3.44 Hedonism 30.75
4th The Lemon +7.06 The Lemon 33.75
5th Run A Muk +7.13 Bahai 39.75
6th Hamilton Mentor +8.17 Sunmaid 40.25
7th Bahai +8.40
8th JAR +10.21
9th Sunsail +14.51

Our thanks to our monthly and annual sponsors, so give your friends and
relatives a treat and enjoy a dinner cruise on the Denison Star or a trip to
Whitehaven aboard Banjo Patterson and pick Adam’s brains on how to go as

Will Rader is a 17 year old road, mountain, and cyclocross racer with the Metro Volkswagen Cycling Team while attaining the high marks at Highland Park High School. Fresh off a stellar finish to the 2009 road races season with strong performances at the Tour of Austin, the Texas State Road Race Championships, and the Piney Hills Classic as well as a huge solo win at the Downtown Denton Criterium, he’s marching towards Bend, OR for his first trip to CX nationals. If you’re heading up to Bend for the festivities December 11-13, be sure to say hi to Will and the Durata Training crew who will be hoping for sloppy conditions. Here’s Will’s account of the inaugural Mellow Classic-

“Starting on the very last row at the Mellow Johnny’s Classic wasn’t quite how I pictured having a great race in the big boy field. I new that it was gonna take some monster power to get around 50 other people to get a top 5 result like I really was hoping for, and from the start list thought was the goal i needed to shoot for. I had heard that they were calling people to the line for start placing based on the number plate and not just a free for all for the front row, the latter of which I was hoping for.

My fears were confirmed as I rolled up to the start finsih and was directed to the last of 10 or so rows. I knew that by the time I got clear of all the traffic and into a rythm the leaders of the race would have at least 3 minutes on me.
As I was still standing trying to get into my peddles the leaders were 200 meters ahead shooting for the single track. Finally starting to roll i powered off the line and started the unfriendly job of moving up like a mad man. I had passed 10 or so people before going into the single track, the first mile was horribly slow because of all the traffic.

Once we started hitting the false flat ups my 6′3 150 pound frame was flying past people left and right, I got a few dirty looks as I was cutting a few passes pretty close, but were absolutely essential to me being able to do well in the race. My brain went into overdrive as I was trying to find lines to pass the other racers and stay up right on the slippery course, the first 2 thirds of the first lap went by as a blur to me. I finally came clear of a big train of guys and saw day light for the first time in the race. I could barely make out 2 figures about 30 second in front of me and about to start the dirt road lined with people. I drilled it and put my head down and focused on catching them by the top of the climb, my heart was about to jump out of my chest sense i had been above 200 beats a minute for the last 5 minutes. I passed Keith at the base of the road and redoubled my efforts and passed David at the top of the climb. I had broken the top 10 ,sitting 8th by the end of the first lap and left awesome.

I set into tempo and try and bring down the 3 min gap between me Matt and Scott. The second lap was really steady as I tried to rest after killing it the first lap. At the end of the second lap I sat 7th and was recouped and ready to kill the last lap after eating and rehydrating. Going through the start finish people were saying i was only 1 minute down on Matt and Scott, 6th and 5th, I sucked up the pain and got ready for a very fast and painful lap trying to get my podium spot for the race.

I was starting to see Scott on some of the winding climbs when he was 2 or 3 turns ahead of me. I bombed a down hill and going up the other side of the hill I cut my rear tire;it was flat in 5 seconds. I jumped off my bike and tried to get the cut to seal but it was a lost cause after 2 quick fills and injecting stans into the tubular. Having my goal in sight and seeing it slip out of my fingers was extremly disapointing… there is alwasy next time.”

17 year old Durata Training athlete Kevin Fish just finished a strong fourth place at the first Mellow Classic held at one of the most storied plots in Texas Hill Country, Lance Armstrong’s ranch near Dripping Springs. When Kevin is not banging on drums or keeping his blog, he’s an easy going high school senior with high hopes for the 2010 race season. Kevin has had a very consistent 2009 season which featured wins at Emma Long’s Revenge and Friedburg MTB Challenge. From Sea Otter to the USAC National Development Camp, Kevin’s performed best when it matters most, exuding his steel and confidence as his biggest strengths. He’s frequently been the top 17yo ride at many races, and kept that streak going last weekend. Let’s catch up with our podium finisher-

KF: This season I have entered into 13 races, not including the local dirt derby races on Tuesday nights.

DT: Why did you choose the Mellow Classic as an important event?

KF: When I saw big names like David Weins, Lance, and JHK entering into the event, I decided to choose this race as an important event. It was a great opportunity to compete with these guys. You learn a lot in races like that. Also anything Lance puts on or is associated with is going to be big.

DT: Was your training any different going into the Mellow Classic than other events?

KF: My training going into the MJ classic was the same as other events. Lots of intervals on the trainer that got progressively higher in power and time on the trail.

DT: Did you run any special equipment for the race?

KF: The only special equipment I ran was the Sauserwind tires by Specialized for the muddy conditions. Also I did run XTR cranks which were different than past races, just because my Specialized cranks broke and I couldn’t get in new cranks in time.

DT: So, photos from the start line show that you were lined up right next to your gracious host, Lance Armstrong. How were your nerves for the start of the race?

KF: I was actually not really nervous at all. I’ve done so many races now that I really don’t get nervous at the start. Instead of getting nervous I would say I get more excited. Lining up by Lance was definitely an exciting moment.

DT: What were you concentrating on during the race?

KF: I was concentrating on getting in nutrition and staying consistent. My plan was to really get everybody on the 2nd and 3rd lap when they started slowing down.

DT: Any different mental approach to the first half of the race versus the last half?

KF: The first half of the race I didn’t really know what to expect or how the race was going to play out. I made sure to push it hard but not too hard so I wouldn’t blow out in the second half of the race.

Good morning to the extreme athletes of CYCHI,

A fading nor’westerly certainly tested the fleet in race 2 of the Bruce
Finlay Series and race 10 of the Fantasea Cruises Club Championship.

The long work up to the northern end of Henning had some close racing
between The Lemon and the JAR the two Status 19’s as well between Hedonism
and Adrenalin with the Hamilton Mentor in her maiden race closing fast and
then dicing with Hedonism as well. In the meantime Run A Muk had disappeared
to go on and win the race by 13 minutes on corrected time. Hamilton Mentor
not only looked spectacular on the water, but with her crew of students
turned in an excellent performance despite not knowing how to extricate a
headsail from a ’sausage bag’ and missing her start by 2 minutes.
With a post race turn up of approximately 80, the bbq went in fine form with
Allan Connell off the JAR producing some first class steaks.
Oatley Wines have again kindly supplied prizes for the weekly winners, our
thanks for their support.

Race 2 Bruce Finlay Sails Series
1st Run A Muk
2nd Hamilton Mentor +13.49
3rd JAR +14.10
4th The Lemon +15.27
5th Adrenalin +18.14
6th Hedonism +19.14
7th Sunmaid +23.24
8th Sunsail Falcon +lots
Bahai DNF

Have a great Whitsunday week.

Thought for the week
‘Any ship can be a minesweeper. Once’.

A gentle reminder…

“All members should be reminded that racing organised by and on behalf of
the committee of the Cruising Yacht Club of Hamilton is under the auspices
and sole discretion of the race director and the committee.

Safety is paramount for all sailing events. Last week’s race was cancelled
by the committee due to very marginal weather conditions and some criticism
was levelled at the committee as a result. Every effort was made to have a
race with conditions constantly reviewed throughout the afternoon right up
to 15 minutes prior to the start. Two of the committee have a combined
yachting and meteorological experience of over 70 years and do not make
decisions lightly. Members may not realise it, but the committee is
personally responsible if an event is started in known adverse conditions,
and as the committee is volunteers, it is not warranted that they should
shoulder this responsibility on behalf of a minority who wish to sail
regardless.

It is appreciated the organisation that is required to finish work, organise
crew and prepare a boat for an afternoon race, however safety considerations
far outweigh that disruption. We have seen the club grow dramatically over
the last couple of years with an equal increase in club profile and interest
shown. Let us not have five minutes of glory tarnish the unblemished safety
record of the club.”

I wish we had this explained to us before the race and wish the racers also had a better explanation. Not sure if anything would have changed in the overall outcome but it would have made it a much more even playing field.

UPDATE: I apologize to Grant that wrote the very informative article explaining the Portugal race format and want to make clear that he does not direct or have anything to do with the event. He was present at the race this year and thought it would be very helpful to all of us to get a good explanation out there. Thanks Grant!
