With the fast pace of fashion these days, it may feel like it’s been an eternity since New York Fashion Week drew to a close, but it’s really only been one week! Just enough time for us to sort through our photos to pull out a few quick snapshots from our whirlwind trip to New York. I sweated the whole way walking there, but it was well worth it. After arriving on the thirteenth floor, I walked into an atmosphere with cutout haunted house decorations. Dubbed “Antonoff Manor,” it featured models with cutout axes, a cutout bed and archway, and graves, complete with jazz and swing music coming from the DJ booth above. The models sported long pigtails (consistent with the fact that Rachel took her inspiration from Wednesday Addams) and wore outfits that both fit well and contrasted nicely with the theme. The collection was very playful, with crop top ruffled blouses, polka dots, floral print, dresses of all lengths, miniskirts, and a few interesting pairs of shoes, notably wing-tips with clear insets. Also worthy of mention were the hats, a collaboration with Albertus Sawnepoel, and all the sheer the collection sported. No Alexa Chung appearance this year, but this presentation was far from lacking.

Fashion Week has only just begun, but we’ve already decided that the Rachel Antonoff Spring 2012 show is one of our favorites of the season! On Thursday, show-goers crept into the whimsical “Antonoff Manor” on the thirteenth floor of West Village’s Ramscale building, and watched as models transformed into haunted-looking dolls donning girlish dresses, sinister grins, and Wednesday Addams plaits. We caught up with Rachel herself to get the low-down on her inspiration, chatted with the DJ, Tennessee Thomas of The Like, and even got to meet Mr. Wendy, the kitty star of the show!

Ok. Rachel Antonoff officially wins the Cuteness Award of the millennium. (Although she might have to share it with this guy.)

Fashion is what it is, but I am most interested in the way it is presented. The style of a photograph, the choice of music at a show, the atmosphere of a presentation. It’s an art. It’s design. It’s important.

And Rachel Antonoff wins everything.

Her clothes are cute as f*ck, let’s be real. But the atmosphere she created at her s/s 2012 presentation killed. Think a 13th floor loft in the West Village (nicknamed Antonoff Manor for the show). Think black and white Tim-Burton-esque sketches, cardboard cutouts, ghoulish graveyard, victorian bedroom. And a real live fluffy black kitty (Antonoff’s own?).

Think Wednesday Adams goes boating.

Oh and Tennesee Smith from The Like spinning records on a lofted section of the apartment overlooking the fantastic scene.

BRAVO.

Rachel Antonoff is just as sweet and adorable as her clothing line. We met a few years ago when I attended her first fashion show–which was also the first show I ever photographed for The Greyest Ghost! (You can see that very show here.)

Flipping through the Rachel Antonoff Fall/Winter 2011 lookbook sends me rocketing right back to childhood. Not only because these pieces resemble those I donned as a little girl, but because there is something so sweet, feminine, and whimsical about these garments that makes them irresistible.


Antonoff’s collection is jam-packed with all kinds of girly details: bows, velvet ribbons, cat-shaped pockets, button-up backs–and even a fun trombone print fabric! Now, every discerning fashionista can appreciate some quality detailing, but what I find most promising about this collection is its versatility factor. The cute party frocks could easily be dressed ‘down’ for a day at the office, or stand alone quite successully. The separates are classic with a bit of a twist, making it easy-peasy to mix and match and, consequently, offer up endless possibilities of wardrobe fun. And those tights with cat and heart-shaped prints placed at the knee caps? Now there’s something I know 5-year-old and 24-year-old Amber both appreciate!

Esme Wissels is so new to the game that I couldn’t even dig through Modelinia or NYMag for information… but some thorough Google investigation and Style.com digging yielded impressive results. Stephanie Rolland, Victoria Beckham, the lovely Rachel Antonoff, Dennis Basso, and Vena Cava are among her runway creds, while Figaro, Elle Belgium, and Harper’s Bazaar are listed in her editorial portfolio.

Her big pout and big eyes will undoubtedly become her signature… but how can you not fall in love with that gorgeous hair?! Although, this ‘do might be more appropriately credited to stylist Odile Gilbert, since these pics were snapped backstage at Rodarte‘s Fall 2011 show… and the catwalk pic is from Tory Burch.

Yesterday I turned 27.. and received the adored Rachel Antonoff x Bass wendybird loafers from my manfriend. Isn’t he sweet?

Being forced to take 4 days off of work and rest has been hellish, but all in all.. it was a great day to turn 27. The true gift will be being able to bend my leg normally in a week or so.

Nothing is more frustrating to me than seeing something I want and having to wait MONTHS for it to become available. As soon as I saw the Rachel Antonoff collaboration with Bass I was in love and had my heart set on these SPECIFIC saddle shoes. I placed my order as soon as they appeared on free people‘s site and found out weeks later that they were actually sold out and i would have to order the other colorway (pinkish red/beige) and i was bummed, but did it anyway after much complaining to everyone i know and love. Randomly the RIGHT saddle shoes appeared at my office desk.. over a week after receiving the red pair. I don’t know how it happened or why, but…A tragic love story with a happy ending.

Earlier this week I decided to take a stroll down W8th Street. When I was in high school this was the street to shop on if you were looking for a pair of shoes or really cool sneaker because it was right off the 8th Street PATH train stop. Anyway, much like everywhere else in NYC this street has changed enormously (I had just also walked down St. Marks…don’t even get me started) but W8th still holds a handful of shoe stores (Kinway is still standing!) and I spotted these super duper cute saddle heeled shoes in a window. Like any shopaholic I went home and researched them and realized they were by designer Rachel Antonoff for Bass. I thought the name sounded familiar so I researched more and realized I have a 4 degree of separation from Rachel. Thanks New Jersey Pop Punk scene! The end.

Bass and Co.  We’ve already discussed my childhood demand for Bass Weejuns, and it’s a little known fact that a favorite accessory of mine is actually a Bass belt I stole from my father sometime in the early nineties.  So on one of my recent visits to the Bass site, I was very pleased to see a new collaboration with a designer that I have had my eye on since 2009 — New York design darling Rachel Antonoff.  I immediately recognized a kindred style spirit upon viewing her very first solo collection for spring 2009.  I adore her penchant for bows, the little skirt, sensual necklines, luxurious textures and her rapt attention to small detailing.  She is the perfect combination of whimsy and nostalgia, but her collections are decidedly au courant.  If you are not familiar with her work, please do spend a bit of time meandering through her website!

The Rachel Antonoff Fall 2011 RTW collection had a 50s sock hop prom-themed presentation complete with glittery balloons and tinsel streamers.  The collection consists of cardigans, brocade dresses, buttonup oxfords and bowtied Bass saddle shoes.  The prom theme combined with the preppy, geeky models have me feeling nostalgic and pining for imaginary 50s high school days.

The sheer creativeness behind the concept of a high school dance to showcase her collection won a lot of people over before they even entered. It was hosted at Laguardia, a school for the arts down the block from the Lincoln Center, fitting the theme. Upon entering, a live band (The Like) was playing, and the models were actually dancing in individually, as couples, and  in groups. The clothes were as youthful as the atmosphere, featuring tights with lightning bolts, hearts, and other designs, plaid dresses, blouses, vests, and various interesting prints. Our favorite pieces were the tights.  We’d like a pair please! This is definetly a stand-out presentation this season, (not to mention that there were twinkies and candy necklaces on each table, which are the key to our hearts obviously). This collection brought out the likes of Tavi, Brad Goreski, Susie Bubble, and Rumi Neely and with good reason.


]]> <![CDATA[Modacycle 1st Semi-Annual Emerging Designers Showcase]]> http://adriannafavero.wordpress.com/2011/02/02/modacycle-1st-semi-annual-emerging-designers-showcase/ Wed, 02 Feb 2011 14:00:31 +0000 adriannafavero http://adriannafavero.wordpress.com/2011/02/02/modacycle-1st-semi-annual-emerging-designers-showcase/ One of the founding principles that drives modaCYCLE is the search for and support of excellence in design.  We believe that excellence can come from anywhere and that it should be encouraged, supported and highlighted whenever possible.  This humble set of beliefs rather quickly evolved into the First Semi Annual Emerging Designers Showcase.  The modaCYCLE editors, Seth Friedermann and Charles Beckwith, chose ten young designers who they felt produced the most compelling collections of the Spring 2011 New York Fashion Week and hosted a party in their honor.  The designers were Zoe Twitt, Karolina Zmarlak, Logan Neitzel, Jose Duran, Victor de Sousa, Copperwheat, Kaelen Farncomb, Katie Gallagher, Sunghee Bang, and Rachel Antonoff.  Each designer was accompanied by a model who wore three looks from the respective collection over the course of the evening.  Prizes for the designers included patterns from Johnny Wu, use of the Natuzzi SoHo showroom for the next season’s presentation or runway, and each designer received their choice of sewing machines from Brother.

My role in the scheme of things was working with sponsors, specifically Best Social, Natuzzi, and Brother, and ringleading the designers, models, and hair and makeup artists.  Being involved in this event was a collassal undertaking but was also incredibly rewarding and exciting experience.
