One of my favorite things to do in the 21st century is burn CDs for people. Partly, it is the narcissistic belief that I listen to cooler music than anyone else on earth (Not true! My friends constantly surprise and delight me with new and wonderful music I have never heard before.)

Anywhatthehellhappenedtonapster, I made a CD for a friend and I’ve pretty much been listening to it on repeat for a week or so. (Eventually, I will give her the CD – just.not.yet.)

So I wanted to share it with yalls tonight because obviously, in my infinite wisdom narcissism, I have chosen songs that are ideal for a nice, leisurely jog in the park. Some of them are new, and some are pretty old, but all of them are awesome.

Q&A with Raconteur Brendan Benson for all 37 Metromix sites. Interview went great once Benson got situated but it took a bit of struggling. Here’s the inside baseball part of my introduction, which, understandably, got cut:

The singer-songwriter talked about making his latest release, The Raconteurs, recording with The Stooges and an upcoming album with country singer Ashley Monroe just as he arrived at a tour stop in Germany.

“I’m just getting out of a car now,” hold on a second,” Benson says as he arrives at the Magnet Club in Berlin. “All right, I have to get somewhere quiet … So I think this is quiet enough.”

The interview begins with a question about last night in Amsterdam. His bandmates partied while he stayed in and nursed a cold. Soft spoken, choosing each word carefully, kind of shy while speaking with me, Benson suddenly sounds brusque.

“Hey guys, where’s the backstage?” he inquires. “Sorry, Wade, it’s getting loud in here, man. It’s just fucking…this is retarded. I just got to the venue and I’m trying to find a quiet spot…Bear with me here a second.”

Benson asks two more people for directions, politely greets a gushing staffer and then we continue. The phone connection breaks up on a few, brief occasions but no more interruptions.

No pictures, please…

It was way too cool to sit down with the Raconteurs at Bonnaroo. They are one of the best live bands out there, and certainly worth a trip downtown to go see.

To listen to the full interview, click here.

If you listen to the end of the interview, you will hear the group actually implode from the amount of concentrated cool that is in that one place. Stephen Hawking will be writing about this phenomenon in his next book.

The Raconteurs have restored themselves and are at the WaMu Theater tonight.

Oddly enough, Jack White is on stage tonight, and Alicia Keys is taking the stage tomorrow. Jack and Alicia teamed up for the soundtrack to the new James Bond flick, marking the first time a Bond theme features a duet!

Too cool.

The Racontuers roll hard.

They don’t travel with a huge entourage, but the people they surround themselves with keep things rolling at a tight clip. There have got to be so many demands on this band. (last year here I saw Meg and Jack White performing on Pankcake Mountain, a kids cable TV show hosted by a surly puppet, anong other things) You can see it in the eyes of the people all around them, like they know while the band is fulfilling one commitment, they are breaking about eight others.

Still when Jack White and Brendan Benson came into Radio Bonnaroo to talk to me, it felt like time suspended. I was told three minutes with the band. Hello! No time for foreplay or pleasantries. I managed to get double that. Six minutes. Best six minutes of Bonnaroo so far. Jack and Brendan were gracious, smart, and easy to talk to. I’ll post the full interview and performance soon.

In the meantime, here’s a photo of Jack White and I demonstrating the double secret handshake. It’s so top secret, a smartly clad operative from the FBI is trying to prevent you from seeing it!

While actress Milla Jovovich may be trying to draw in your attention with talk of extraterrestrial o

While actress Milla Jovovich may be trying to draw in your attention with talk of extraterrestrial owls and an imminent fear of the fourth kind, there’s a phenomenon that has been slowly gaining momentum in the music world….

Bands and musicians have been switching members and pairing up like Xenon Octa-Flouride (XeF8) would, if it ever is going to be invented (thanks Wikipedia!). In layman’s terms, we’ve been getting a lot of new supergroups, side projects, and collaborations – some that could have been foreseen, and others that seem to have appeared out of nowhere.

The Almanac Singers seen here with Bess Hawes, Arthur Stern and Sis Cunningham

Now, the idea of a supergroup is not a recent innovation by any stretch of the imagination – the supergroup goes all the way back to the Almanac Singers - a combination of Millard Lampell, Lee Hayes, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie that got its start in 1940. From the 60’s until today, we have been given plenty more supergroups, such as in 1969 which brought us both The Plastic Ono Band (which included the likes of Eric Clapton, both George Harrison and Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and Alan White – just to name a few) as well as Blind Faith (which also featured Mr. Clapton, but had Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and Ric Grech to boot). 1988 brought us the Traveling Wilburys, which was the tour de force of George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. And although they Wilburys only stuck together for about a year after Orbison’s death, that cosmic aligning is something that has not met it’s match… yet.

The Monsters of Folk

Among the recent crop of supergroups is a group I mentioned last week – The Monsters of Folk, which consists of folk songsters Connor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes, M. Ward of She & Him, and Jim James from My Morning Jacket. They’ve been associated under the Monsters name since 2004, but have all been so busy with their respective main attractions that they weren’t able to release their self-titled first album until this year. You’ve definitely heard their track “Say Please” on the Peak – and both M. Ward and Connor Oberst gave free concerts in NYC this summer!

Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar

Moving down the line from most folky to least, next up is the recent pairing of Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard with Jay Farrar, member of Uncle Tupelo and frontman for Son Volt, the two bands that he played with throughout the 90’s before he launched his solo career in 2001. Gibbard and Farrar first got together in 2007 to record the soundtrack for One Fast Move and I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur. Both the movie and the album came out on October 20th, the day before the 40th anniversary of the prolific author’s death. You can see the music video for “San Fransisco”, the last track on the album, here. And you can expect to see more from them in the future.

Taking a detour into the realm of electronica, at the end of September, Thom Yorke, the lead singer of Radiohead, slipped this little surprise into his blog:

hi

in the past couple of weeks i’ve been getting a band together for fun to play the eraser stuff live and the new songs etc.. to see if it could work!

here’s a photo.. its me, joey waronker, mauro refosco, flea and nigel godrich.

at the beginning of october the 4th and 5th we are going to do a couple of shows at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.

we don’t really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz ..well …we haven’t got that much material yet!

Thom Yorke and Flea

Of course, those shows were sold out in 20 minutes. Flea, as you know, is the Red Hot Chili Peppers Bassist – and he seemed to be ecstatic to be on stage with Yorke, playing cuts from Yorke’s solo album The Eraser (2006). There hasn’t been a follow-up to the October concerts, but that’s something you should keep an eye out for as well.

Jack White and Alison Mosshart sharing the mike at Glastonbury this year

Next up come two really driving groups. First is The Dead Weather, whose song “Hang You Up From the Heavens” I featured in my first week of blog-writing. The Dead Weather was formed by Jack White who’s been extremely active – leaping from the White Stripes, to the Raconteurs, to the recent release of “It Might Get Loud” – a documentary featuring White, The Edge, and Jimmy Page. The band also features Alison Mosshart of the Kills on lead vocals, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age and Jack Lawrence, who played with White in the Raconteurs. And to sweeten the deal, they just announced a show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 17th! Tickets for that are going on Sale this friday, so get ‘em quick.

The "Them Crooked Vultures" teaser photo from earlier this fall

And finally, we come to Them Crooked Vultures, or TCV as they call themselves. TCV is big news. On drums is Dave Grohl, from Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. On vocals and guitar is Josh Homme, from the Queens of the Stone Age. The kicker is that John Paul Jones comes soaring in on bass. They’ve got a really great sound, full and rocking, but what remains to be seen is whether TCV will be able to stay afloat once their star power has worn off. Their self-titled first record is due out on Sony in a week, which should be an insta-grab for all hard rock fans. But for now, check out the full album on the band’s website!

So, I apologize about all the name dropping – it’s not something I routinely do. If you think a supergroup has been left out, please let me know. Or if you feel the need to justify the Tinted Windows‘ existence, by all means, please try. But if you do, I’ll kindly remind you that their lead singer is from Hanson, and we’ll go our separate ways. Wikipedia to the rescue once again!

——————————–

Hello once again good people of blogworld. I felt that it was about time I posted again as it’s been nearly a month, my excuse if you’re interested is that I started a new job just about a month ago and I have been just a little busy. But enough of that and on with the post!

Have you read in the press about the celebrations accompanying the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall? I can’t believe that it was 20 years ago, can you? Anyway part of the celebrations involved a concert near the site of the old east-west barrier which included a twenty minute set from U2. The whole shebang was promoted and I believe set up by MTV. I assume that they have some highly paid and highly skilled PR people working for them. Highly paid maybe but highly skilled I doubt very much. Why do I draw this conclusion? Well largely because in their infinite wisdom MTV decided to ensure that the 10,000 ticket holders were going to be the only people that would see the stage. How did they do this? Well they built a wall of course! Did no one see the irony in this? Many German Radio Stations with tickets to give away in competitions sent them back in protest and I must say that I don’t blame them. You can read about it here

It’s been a while since I last posted any criticism of the banking industry, but now those poor impoverished bankers (apologies I should have started that with a W rather than a B shouldn’t I?) are getting close to their bonus levels of old the time is surely ripe. What I will never understand is how a bunch of people who came close to destroying the whole industry and have caused serious damage to the world economy should be paid any form of bonus? What the f*ck is that all about. Anyway if that wasn’t bad enough it has been brought to my attention that Wall Street Banks Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley have bullied their way to the front of the queue for the swine flu vaccine H1N1. At the same time many health care workers, pregnant women and people at risk are still waiting. Click here to read the story. It used to be said that in the event of a nuclear catastrophe in the world the creatures that would survive and thrive in post apocalyptic times would be rats and cockroaches. I believe that is still essentially true, however I think that bankers should also be added to that list although perhaps they are just rats and cockroaches already! What do you think? OK as I have said many times before that this is essentially a music blog so let me bring so music into it, something relevant to the story of course.

“Rat In Mi Kitchen” – UB40. The band bought their first instruments with £4,000 compensation that former lead singer Ali Campbell received from injuries he received in a bar fight as a 17-year-old. Compensation people, not a bonus ok!

Another story in yesterdays newspaper was about yet another failure in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Cerne. It has just been returned to service after nearly a year out of action and £23 million of repairs following a serious electrical fault in September 2008. The LHC in simple terms is trying to recreate conditions that existed just before the Big Bang that created the universe billions of years ago. The search for the elusive ‘god particle’ was stopped this time by another power cut. How was this caused? Well when an LHC support worker found the source of the outage he found a piece of bread being eaten by a bird! I wonder if the bread was the remains of an LHC workers lunch or was it manna from heaven? I thought I’d include the last comment to placate any creationists that might be reading this, you’re wrong but at least I placated you! You can read the Guardian’s article on this incident by clicking here. I must add that this is also one of the headlines of the year too! Big Bang Goes Phut As Bird Drops Baguette Into Cern Machinery!

This time those boffins at the large hadron collider in Cern had made sure that their plans for a big bang would not be upset by some bird brained idea. A rather excellent song and listen out for the counter point vocal from none other than Jack White off of the White Stripes, Raconteurs and Dead Weather

And finally I simply have to mention ITV’s X Factor, sadly I have been hooked beyond the point where all the no hopers have gone (well except for john and Edward, although more about them later). Finally this week John and Edward (or Jedward as the tabloids have christened them) made it into the bottom two this weekend. I would have expected Simon Cowell to use his casting vote to cast them out, but he chose to put it to the public vote which meant that Lucie Jones leaves the show. I never have had any respect for Louis Walsh but I used to maintain a degree of respect for Mr Cowell. However that has completely gone now. Given the opportunity to rid us of Jedward he copped out, or did he simply want to get rid of the act most likely to beat one of the acts he is mentoring. At this point I really hope that Jedward win the competition, not because I think that they have any talent or deserve to win, but simply because that would mean Mr Cowell would have to give these two walking toilet brushes a £1 million recording contract. Perhaps that would finally kill off awful TV shows like X Factor. Big Brother is dead now let’s kill the X Factor!

”See you again soon. God bless!”

sorry guys I’ve been majorly busy and haven’t been keeping up with my 90210 / Melrose series I promised you. That said, 90210 has really been kicked Melrose’s butt with its musical choices so I’m just gonna give you some of my favorite cuts from the past few eps. Oh and hope you enjoy the photo of Trevor Donovan. He plays Teddy on the show and while his character isn’t overtly interesting he is nice to look at. I guess every show needs their Nate Archibald.

Looks like it’s gonna end up being a Top 50. It’s tough being a music nerd. In the meantime, here’s what Jack White has done this decade. What’s up with 2002? What a slacker!!

2000: The White Stripes, De Stijl
2001: The White Stripes, White Blood Cells; White founds Third Man Records
2003: The White Stripes, Elephant; White contributes to Cold Mountain soundtrack and appears in the film
2004: White produces and performs on Loretta Lynn’s Van Lear Rose
2005: The White Stripes, Get Behind Me Satan
2006: The Raconteurs, Broken Boy Soldiers
2007: The White Stripes, Icky Thump
2008: The Raconteurs, Consolers of the Lonely; White records “Another Way to Die” with Alicia Keys for Bond flick Quantum of Solace
2009: The Dead Weather, Horehound; White Stripes tour film Under the Great White Northern Lights premieres at Toronto Film Festival; White stars in guitar love-note doc It Might Get Loud with Jimmy Page and U2’s The Edge

Saying you don’t particularly ‘ get’ The White Stripes usually elicits the same sort of incredulity and anger normally reserved for somebody who decides to drop their trousers and shout “Hallelujah!” whilst receiving Holy Communion at church on Sunday. But the truth is I never really had much time for The White Stripes, Ok so “Hotel Yorba” had a certain rough-hewn rustic knock about charm, but for some reason they reminded me of Timbuk 3 (anyone remember them! ) and I never quite managed to sever that ludicrous mental connection. As the popular music press salivated over each new White Stripes release I would offer the same indifferent shrug I normally reserved for the latest Foo Fighters tune. After hearing Mr White’s rather woefully misjudged James Bond /Alicia Keys rock-warble hybrid I felt a shameful sense of schadenfreude “not quite the godhead you’re often made out to be eh Jacky boy ?” I thought. However despite my resistance to all things JW I could appreciate that he is an amazing, innovative guitarist but I believed that the premature anointing of Mr W as some sort of musical deity was somewhat over the top, but hey, ho, I didn’t lose much sleep over it and I’m damn sure Jack didn’t, – I didn’t dislike The White Stripes they just kinda washed over me and I concluded that some bands you just don’t ‘get’. And so The White Stripes existed -I didn’t bother them, they didn’t bother me, everybody was happy. Then along came The Raconteurs, and I admit I was initially seduced by ‘Steady As She Goes’ and we briefly held hands but when I listened to the full album I realised we were never likely to consummate our musical relationship and so it seemed that another Jack White project was to pass me by … I must admit I did feel I was missing out, but couldn’t quite work out how or in what sense??…..

But now Jacks really gone and upset my apple cart …he’s only gone and produced a sleazy slice of rock n’ roll that even I could not fail to be moved by. His latest single “I Cut Like a Buffalo” from yet another of his ever expanding side projects, The Dead Weather, is the song that really changed everything for me, it became a musical jemmy that opened a mind that was seemingly forever hermetically sealed to all things Jack White… after listening to this track everything slowly started fall in to place, suddenly I started to “get” the Dead Weather and it proved “I don’t know Jack!”

Alongside Jack, The Dead Weather’s dirge rock is the product of Dean Fertita (Queens Of The Stone Age), “Little” Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes) and Alison Mosshart (The Kills) “I Cut Like Buaffalo” is their latest musical calling card from their debut album ‘Horehound’. It’s a track which perfectly captures their gritty rock & dirty blues sound. It’s a dark, organ grinding number containing a Stranglers inspired intro which fuses “Peaches” with “Hanging Around” before crossing over into Clash territory whilst managing to retain that whiskey sodden blues quality that sounds utterly authentic, natural and completely uncontrived. Apparently The Dead Weather formed as the result of a Raconteurs jam session and it kind of has that rough and ready vibe, a raw untreated feel, like it was recorded in a New Orleans crack house on Halloween. Visceral guitars and juddering beats circle Jack and Alison’s vocals like a pack of hungry wolves as he snarls “Is that you chokin’?/ Or are you just jokin’? I’ve no idea what “Cuts Like A Buffalo” actually means, some say it’s a euphemism for death, others that it’s a slightly unpleasant term for bleeding during sexual congress(nice), but I prefer to think of it as somebody who is thick-skinned -difficult to upset, hurt, or insult-tough, a bit like Mr T. It’s a tune that has been playing around in my head for weeks, and is a song destined to one day join the canonised classics. It may well also be the catalyst which inspires me to revisit the White Stripes in the hope that the penny will finally drop …..8/10

This is one of the best things that has ever happened.

I was reminded of it when I heard the original version of the Gnarls Barkley song this morning on the way to work. I’ve seen the Raconteurs twice, both of which were mesmerizing, soul-shaking performances, but I didn’t get this performance in either one. Not sure I could have handled it.

The original is funky and awesome, and it will always remind me of my first summer here in Nashville. It played in every public place I walked into, from Fido to just about any department store, and there was always someone (not counting me) singing along.

This, though? This is rock and roll lustmagic.

My son invited me to see the movie ‘It Might Get Loud’, a documentary about the electric guitar. Three rock guitarists are featured, Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White. I was very familiar with the first two and their work in the bands Led Zeppelin and U2 and have copies of most their albums in my music collection. My exposure to Jack White was only knowing of his association with the White Stripes, a band I hadn’t ever connected with and in fact, actually avoided.

The White Stripes is a duo made up of White playing a cheap plastic guitar purchased decades ago from Montgomery Wards and his older sister drafted to sit behind a small drum kit. I’d previously dismissed their music after not much consideration as yet another gimmick thrown together by some industry executive to sell some records.

This isn’t about the White Stripes or any of those guys in the movie.

This is about how realizing the genius of art requires the viewer/listener to be a willing participant in the exchange. It’s about how the older one gets the more we tend to shut down the unfamiliar, to get into an ever narrowing rut of purposefully limiting our range of experiences. When we do that to ourselves we end up missing a lot. A lot of genius.

In the film, someone talks about finding yourself standing in a managed forest surrounded by trees, seemingly placed at random. Only after moving will you suddenly realize that they’re all planted in precise rows. By simply stepping a few feet in a different direction, the truth is instantly revealed and it completely changes your perspective.

I’ll let you draw your own conclusions from ‘It Might Get Loud’ (an excellent film by the way) and won’t attempt to re-write Jack Whites biography here, but suffice to say my original impressions about White were completely wrong. The musical journey I’ve taken in the few days since making that realization has been very, very rewarding.

A few of us have been waiting impatiently for the movie, It Might Get Loud, ever since we saw the trailer. If you haven’t heard about this and you’re a guitar player or a musician, listen to this!

The whole concept is about bringing three people in to talk about the guitar, songwriting, and the development of their style. That sounds somewhat cool, but when those three people are Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White, you can understand the excitement.

Anyways, we didn’t expect the movie to come here, but the fine folks at the community theatre (they play a ton of indie flicks, documentaries, etc..), brought it in for a week. Let’s just say it was pretty damn good.

I wanted to talk a little bit about one aspect of the show where they talk about the art of creation. Edge described it as making your way through a cluttered forest, eventually you’ll get to a point where all the trees are lined up perfectly and the light shines in. You can work on creating something that just isn’t working, but suddenly out of nowhere, something will come to you, and you’ve got it.

Creativity is a strange thing. The minute you try to control it and consciously call for it, it’s not there. You can encourage it to come out, but you can’t force it. It has to flow at the right time after the inspiration hits. I think the work really comes after you’ve already got the raw song sketch.

¿Díganme, me extrañaron?

Ya había salido en RB2, You Ought to Know, todas del mismo disco.

Of The Stone Age, Dean Fertita.

The alliance of music and film is taken a bit for granted these days, but let’s be honest: The two are inseparable. Take, for example, this, this and this. And that’s with omitting the way-obvious scene in Say Anything where new-wave-kid John Cusack proudly blares Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” out of his ghettoblaster to woo his girl… something that no self-respecting new wave kid would have done, but we digress. (It’s not available online due to copyright restrictions, anyway.) The point is music and film are a match made in heaven, something Hollywood learned well in the ’80s and ’90s and that independent filmmakers have taken even further in the years since.

The latest example is coming to the Moxie Cinema screens a week from this Friday. (In other words, 10/16.) It Might Get Loud takes the viewer into the minds, histories and influences of three of rock’s most prominent and influential guitarists: Jimmy Page of The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin, The Edge of U2 and Jack White of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs. It’s a chance to see each player’s style turned inside-out as the three sit down together and reveal the secrets behind their respective sounds, a rare reveal to be sure. (For The Moxie’s full synopsis, including critical reviews, click here.)

Intrigued? Want to see some of your rock ‘n’ roll heroes show you the tricks of their trade? Tickets are just $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and students and $6 for matinees… or you can watch our Twitter feed later this week and next for chances to win tickets for free.
