There’s a reason why they call it the Christmas Spectacular. It truly is spectacular to see the Rockettes perform at Radio City, New York City. My biz partner, Terry, and I were invited with our families to meet and mingle with the Rockettes and Santa, of course. The show promises to dazzle (my six year old particularly loved the sparkley leotards and high kicks) and entertain (our boys loved the 3-D movie, feeling as if snowballs were being thrown their way). Did you know that many of the Rockettes are in fact mothers? We even learned that some of them time their pregnancies to fall in the off-season. So, for all of you who are between 5′6″ and 5′10 1/2″, there is still hope. Now wouldn’t that be something SPECTACULAR?! We are pleased to offer you discounted seats through MyWorkButterfly.com.

Speaking of spectacular experiences, we had the pleasure, I mean honor, of co-presenting the Women’s Future Leadership Forum with Junior Achievement of New Jersey, sponsored by Accenture. The forum paired diverse female executives with inner city, suburban and rural high school girls for a day of mentoring and inspiration, offering work/life readiness tools to succeed in a global economy. Junior Achievement of New Jersey selected these girls because of their achievements in school and their participation in the Junior Achievement High School Heroes Program, where they serve as JA volunteer role models at their local elementary school. To witness the transformation in these young girls and to see the glimmer of hope in their eyes, is to know that we all have the capability to mentor the business leaders of tomorrow.

Pamela Craig, CFO of Accenture and chair of the event, said it best, “We all need support- and today’s challenging economic environment reminds us that no one can build the skills to succeed alone. Mentoring those who will follow us is a privilege and a calling. It is also essential to how we define ourselves as leaders. By offering guidance and support, we can help young people we care about chart their paths toward successful careers- and also make sure they know they are not alone.” In addition to Ms. Craig, the panelists for the event included: Rhonda Crichlow, Executive Director, Alliance Development & Philanthropy, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation; Caroline Dorsa, Executive Vice President & CFO of PSEG; Yvonne Hao, CEO of D&M Holdings; Marilyn Thompson, Director, Global Diversity & Inclusion for Consumer Business Group at Johnson & Johnson and Nina Mitchell Wells, Secretary of State, New Jersey. Can you say WOW?! Not only did we throughly enjoy being surrounded by so many accomplished women in business, we interviewed each and every one of them. While we could have stayed all day, we knew that you’d want us to hurry back to the editing room so that you could be inspired yourselves. Video coming soon to MyWorkButterfly.com and our new Moms Quick Survey for you to take NOW! By completing the survey, you can enter a valid e-mail address to be entered into one random drawing for $25 Visa Gift Card!

In the season of giving, we feel as if we’ve already unwrapped our presents. Each woman we meet, each mother we interview and each member that signs on… you all have become our gift. And for that, we say Thank You! Thank you to Dawn Schwartz, VP Development, and Catherine Milone, President, at Junior Achievement of NJ, to the panelists and the High School Heroes for leaving such an impressionable mark on our lives. And thank you, Butterflies. Enjoy your families as you put work aside this Thanksgiving.

We truly have so much to be grateful for.

At 8pm tune-in for the new ‘Radio City Christmas Spectacular Starring The Rockettes”. This holiday special features numbers like legendary “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and thrill as Santa takes you on a magical ride to his workshop at the North Pole, where playful ragdolls come to life. Everyone marvels at the stunning reenactment of the first Christmas in the “Living Nativity”

Taped in December 1999 at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, accompanied by the Vienna Symphony and joined by the Gumpoldskirchner Spatzen Children’s Choir, this program features popular Christmas songs such as “White Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” as well as beloved carols and sacred songs such as “O Holy Night,” and “Amazing Grace.”

I get to attend the Rockettes tonight at the Fox Theatre. I simply cannot wait. I sure hope they let me take pictures.

As far as black and white week go, I have not taken any pictures. I will hopefully get some tonight while I am out and about in the city.

I currently have an obsession with weeds. I am also really getting into this whole deviantART thing. It’s a great site to get connected with other photographers and find inspiration. Everyone is very encouraging and not stuck up like on many photography websites I have been to. I hate snobs.

Although I recently posted some news about Radio City on vox, I decided that I’d do the same here. It is my new blog, so why not?

Radio City may be a small town rock band, but they definitely aren’t “Speaking with Nothing to Say.” These four hard-working boys are on a mission, not only to get their music out there, but to make music that reaches people, that makes them feel understood.

After a year of playing in their hometown of Emporia, KS, Radio City is starting to expand their musical horizon. They’ve started booking gigs in Kansas City, Wichita, and Lawrence; and, thanks to their new EP Tonights Not the Night, they’ve been played on radio stations in Manhattan and KC.

So what’s next? The signing of their distribution contract, of course. In a few months, everyone can find Radio City’s music on various online sites, such as iTunes. And if things go really well, they’ll be featured on some random television show or movie.

Thanks to Eric’s heartfelt songs, unique cigarrette-rough voice, and tedious guitar playing; Jack’s killer bass riffs; Matt’s rock-star guitar thrashing, up-beat semi-screamo songs, and intriguingly unpredictable harmonization; Ryan’s literally bloody trap fills; and a little bit of luck, Radio City may actually start making some money.

Intrigued yet? Check them out at www.myspace.com/radiocitymusic and let me know what you think. We’re all lovers of feedback, good and bad.

A record label. A collection of musicians. An ethos. A cult. The Elephant 6 Collective is all that and more. Based in Athens, Ga. (after originating in Denver), and formed by Bill Doss, Will Hart, Jeff Mangum and Robert Schneider, it started out as a way to record and release their psychedelic influenced lo-fi pop. It soon spiraled and transformed, with other artists joining and band members working on each others’ albums. Eventually, it became less of a recording company than a pool of artists who shared a similar style and philosophy about making music. And it was from this pool that some of the greatest artists of the genre’s modern era — Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo, of Montreal and The Olivia Tremor Control to name a few — got their start.

So what’s the very best of trip-hop? 20 Watts’ MARC SOLLINGER has the answer in our ninth 20 installment. Watch for new 20s each Thursday, only on 20 Watts, and check out our previous 20s below!

By back then I refer to the 1930s when I grew up in The Bronx.

First off The Bronx was not, and I’m pretty sure about this, the slummy, desolate area you picture.

We lived on a parkway with a playground on the other side of our street. My school was a hundred yards away. (And yes, I have told my children about walking miles through the snow.)

There were large parks and ball fields everywhere.

All of our parents, save one, were immigrants. The offspring of That became a lawyer and Broadway actor who studied the Olivier part in England.

Our parents were totally occupied in making a very modest living. My father made $32.50 walking up and down buildings selling insurance.

The non-immigrant was an accountant with a teacher wife. He had played baseball in college and tried to teach us some of the basics.

A losing cause.

Our parents basically left us alone.

We played basketball night and day and friends and acquaintances played for CCNY, LIU and NYU. They were damn good; one was on the team that sold out at CCNY in the first great basketball scandal. He was good, but not good enough to be bribed.

We traveled downtown to The Roxy, Paramount and Radio City movie palaces to see a film and a headliner on stage. By ourselves.

We saw The Yankees play. By ourselves.

And we traveled to The New York World’s Fair. 1939 and 1940. By ourselves.

At The Fair we rushed in, took the brochures they would allow us to have and rushed to the next building. And then to the next building.

People tell me how much they learned from The Fair.

I basically remember a large brochure from Australia and a smaller one titled Why Burlington?

Not much to take from a Fiorello LaGuardia, Grover Whalen, Robert Moses inspired project but that’s what we did.

There were hundreds of brochures and I ultimately parked them at my brother’s house in Mount Vernon. He, of course, threw them away.

They’re now worth a small fortune. Hmm.

One good friend attended Music & Art High School and naturally became president of Max Factor and later Neutrogena.

Another ran the paper at De Witt Clinton H.S. and ultimately the educational side of PBS in New Hampshire and later in San Jose, CA. A daughter is an army general.

I went to the Bronx High School of Science and developed a vaccine for the swine flu epidemic that was to arrive 70 years later.

I guess not!

I went into advertising and publishing and was never heard from again.

Back to the question. Are things different now?

There was a war on the horizon and it took most of us; a limited few fatally.

We came back and many of us prospered.

We grew up in Depression Years but never really faced hardships. In some respects we didn’t realize we were poor.

Kids now face drugs and guns. Virtually all of them.

Guns we knew from the movies. (I became a radio-gunner in the Naval Air Corps, flew from here to there and back again. I see the mountains of Afghanistan and tremble.)

We smoked and believed we were Humphrey Bogart waiting for Ingrid Bergman.

The streets of today are dangerous. A check of the 6 PM Local News tells you all you want to know about drugs and guns, streets and roads.

Let your children go miles away by themselves?

I don’t think so.

The kids of today face incredibly more danger than we ever did.

People may have been evicted from their houses back then but we didn’t know any of them. People may have been killed but we didn’t know them either.

Frankly it was a more cheerful time then. The future really did look bright.

I’m not sure about that today.

i worked a lot this week. i worked hard. i am exhausted. back to school night and general hustling to make things happen in LA kicked my bootay. i have very few plans this weekend beyond catching up on my dvr and getting ready to see my friend nikki james perform at musical mondays this coming week. i’m so grateful she’s in LA for another month because i’ve gotten to spend a lot of time with her!

but my friend sara, had an even crazier week it sounds like. i’m so behind on catching up on friends’ lives this week that i just finally got to see this. miley cyrus has the flu or strep throat or something and sara was her standby that’s for sure! wow. now that is called professional! i am so proud to be her friend–a friend that can jump in and cover on a dime! that takes talent.

my dear, dear friend stacey is getting ready for another season as a Radio City Rockette–this year in NYC! I am so excited for her as well. and my brother peet is going to be shooting wipeout in a month. snaps! hoping for my own excitement soon, but so proud of him!!

Kirjoitin aikaisemmin maamme epäluotettavimpaan mediakonserniin – Sanoma-WSOY:hin – kuuluvan Radio Rockin henkisesti kaksikymppisinä itseään mainostavien (ja todellisuudessa henkisesti kolmetoistavuotiaan kuvan itsestään antavien)

Jussi Heikelän

ja Aki Linnanahteen

Jussi Halla-ahoa vastaan käymästä mustamaalauskampanjasta, jota pojut ovat käyneet – ilmeisesti tietämättömyyttään – korporaatioksi nimeämässään ehehehehehe-pissa-kakka-pieru-teinihuumorilla kyllästetyssä ohjelmassaan.

Haluan lisätä jotain vielä samaan asiaan liittyen. Vaikka Heikelä ja Linnanahde antavat kuvan rennosta ja vitsikkäästä menosta, kyse on kuitenkin varsin ilkeästä ja – näköjään täysin seurauksia miettimättömästä – henkisesti keskenkasvuisesta henkisestä masturboinnista.

Kuunnelkaa huviksenne eilisen ohjelman podcast. Ohjelman kohdassa n. 10.55 min. – 12.00 min tulee varsin mielenkiintoinen kommentti – mahdollinen yllytys rikokseen.

Ohjelman vieraana oleva Simo Rantalainen puhuu aivan muista asioista tuohon saakka.

Me vastaamme: Me emme ota kantaa Suomen valtakunnansyyttäjänviraston harkinnassa olevaan kantaan suomalaisesta sananvapaudesta (paitsi, että aina tuo virasto on ollut väärässä).

Radio Jore vaan vaikenee – Hyvää ötyä.

* * *

Kerran heille tulee kuitenkin – kolmen siiderin ja kahden promillen kännissä – sellainen kuningasidea, etiä haetaanpa (teoreettisesti) pahin mahdollinen vastustaja tälle rotutohtorille – suomalainen muslimi.

Crowds gather outside the Radio City Music Hall in New York. A young man carries a Roland TR-808 d

Crowds gather outside the Radio City Music Hall in New York. A young man carries a Roland TR-808 drum machine under his arm and proceeds to throw it atop of a fire billowing toxic smoke from a large pile of discarded shutter shades and vocoders.

A sign reads: ‘Kanye, How Could You?’ Just an evening previously, the greatest musician who ever lived shocked the world by humiliating a young girl, for no reason at all other than he thought the Beyoncé video where some girls dance for a while, was better. While this may seem on the surface, the inexplicable actions of a despicable tosser, it is far more complicated than that. You see, when Kanye learned how to be a master of everything, a certifiable genius and the greatest musician of ALL TIME, he forgot how to think rationally.

In the spirit of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Rosa Parks, Kanye protests vigorously against what he perceives as injustice. So when the ridiculously named teenage sensation Taylor Swift, a name that could just as easily be a men’s razor, won the award for ‘Best Female Video’, Kanye had to act!

Like a child chasing a balloon across a road with scant regard for the oncoming traffic, Kanye burst onto the stage to interrupt Taylor and make the ludicrous claim that Beyoncé’s video was on of the best of all time. Has this man no sense of perspective? No. No shame, no dignity, no brain either.

Amidst the fierce backlash towards Kanye essentially making a fool of himself, the world is a better place because of people like Jay-Z, who in times of crisis like this, can put things in perspective. Mr.Z, presumably angling for a job working for Scotland Yard, helpfully points out that Kanye ‘didn’t kill anyone’, this startling new development was followed by an assertion that Kanye is just ’super-passionate’. A passion for what? Stupidity?

Quoth Tupac: Life goes on. Surely the greatest man that ever lived can survive this episode? He’s taken to apologising maniacally, the way people do after they’ve fucked up beyond repair, just an exercise in damage control. Oh well, we’ll always have the internet to remind us of the seven days that shook the Kanye West ego.

More on Kanye West here. If that’s not enough, there’s even more here! The whole series will be released in a leather-bound special edition in time for Christmas this year! Don’t delay! Preorder your copy today!

Click image to see all merchandise with this design, from Our Krazy Kulture!

NBC’s one-man dramatic workshop is a 30-year-old, horn-rimmed, half-pint scrivener named Arch Oboler, who in the last five years has written some 200 radio plays, cast many of them, directed some of them standing on a table so the actors could see him. About Arch Oboler are many unmistakable marks of genius. His inspiration is the music of the masters; amid the correct mufti of staid Radio City he sports Hollywood-style polo shirts, violent jackets, unpressed bags; in his atelier he kept a pet horned toad until last weekend it died after overdoing a diet of worms.

This sort of front, plus a prodigious capacity for turning out ideas and listenable plays, make Arch Oboler NBC’s No. 1 Wonder Boy. His start toward such a ranking goes back to a bundle of estimable playlets he turned out in 1934-35 for the Grand Hotel program. This got him an NBC job writing for Rudy Vallee’s hour, as well as a Wednesday after-midnight radio dreadful called Lights Out. After two eldritch years, during which Lights Out collected a batch of eerie-minded fan clubs and curdled more next-door neighbors than any program on the air, Arch Oboler left the series in other hands, feeling that not even he could top the high in horror he had by then achieved.

Click image to see all merchandise with this design, from Our Krazy Kulture!

Since March, Arch Oboler has been writing, casting, directing, dabbling with radio tricks and sound effects, in a Saturday night play series specializing in “emotional conflict.” To last Saturday’s, NBC paid special attention, giving a full hour for the first time, and using the NBC symphony orchestra for the first time in a dramatic show. Reason: sixtyish Alla Nazimova, Stanislavsky-trained, Ibsenite and cinema siren, had been won to radio.

For the occasion, Playwright Oboler had constructed This Lonely Heart, a doloroso radio fluoroscoping of the troubled soul of Tschaikowsky’s ever-loving patroness, Mme von Meek (Nazimova).

Grey-bobbed Nazimova took to the microphone like a trouper reclaimed for a Billy Rose floor show, emoted copiously in black slacks in an audienceless studio, wasted wordily away at the finish like a traditional Camille. Mightily pleased with the play, the playwright and a medium which let her hold most of the stage for a full hour without a single program or gum wrapper crackling, Alla Nazimova let out a secret. “Always,” she confessed, “I have hated audiences. Always!”

I usually prefer to listen radio , when, I go for a walk, in the night. Yesterday, I was listening the Radio city and heard the song from one Bollywood flick, I enjoyed it, and suddenly surfed to another FM channel..Radio FM and was amazed to heard the same song been played…..with so much sync..so much in tune with tune….line by line…that, I once thought that my radio got something wrong….but again refreshed the thing and heard the same song on 2 different channel at same time…in …..hand in hand !!!!! and I enjoyed the scenario very much by jogging between the channels and comaparing the quality of air transmission for both …so…at least, I had a chance to learn something new….

So, it is the example of co incidence, where a life is a silent spectator or listener in the case. But, enjoy everything as it comes…..as life is a journey, where all foot falls , do not fall on comfort zone as well as on dis-comfort zone ,every time….

I never in my life would have imagined that I’d be one of those people standing in a crowd outside of some Red Carpet award event like the VMA’s. I mean, who does that? And why?

But my friend Laura, Bushwick, indie-loving Laura, thought it’d be hilarious if we went to check out the “shitshow.” So we did. And it was insane. We went a few hours early and got a good spot close to the front even though we still couldn’t really see a whole lot. At least half of the people around us were from other countries, saying long strings of words really fast, in which the only things we could understand were “Lady Gaga” and “America’s Next Top Model.” A quarter of the crowd was from New Jersey – this one girl talking way too loud and saying inappropriate things for attention while taking sips from a beer in a brown bag and then dropping it on the ground, spilling it everywhere. The other quarter, I’m not too sure. Probably 20% gay men who were calling every single person in their phonebooks to tell them they were “At the VMA’s” Sorry kid, you’re just across the street. The last 5% were probably people like me, who live here and came out of sheer curiosity only to wonder what the heck they were doing once they actually got there.

But I’m glad we went. We got to see a lot of famous people from really far away: Kanye, people from The Hills, Katy Perry, Jimmy Fallon, Akon, Green Day, Jack Black, Paramour, Fefe Dobson (hell, yeah!), Taylor Lautner (I don’t care but maybe someone reading this does) and Alessandra Ambrosio. She used to be my friend Kayti’s obsession. Probably still is.

Here’s a shot of funny man Andy Samberg doing his thing from across the street. He’s blurry in the photo but he wasn’t in real life.

See that little figure in the light jacket in the center of the photo? That’s him.

Oy. I heard Kanye was a real ass during the show tonight. And we’re surprised? I’ll have to read about that one in all my blogs tomorrow.

SWV – I’m So Into You

Radio City: Class Of ‘77 (Radio Heartbeat, 2009)

This is a lost power pop gem from the late seventies.. or can you lose something that was never released. Radio City was too pop for the punk scene of New York and never got the break they would have deserved, but they did record a fantastic bunch of songs that finally thirty years later see the light of the day. Especially the opening tracks Don’t Mistake Love (recorded 1980) and Little Runaway (recorded 1978) are really wonderful pop songs that should be listed among power pop classics. The next eight songs are from Radio City’s demo tape that was recorded live in winter 1977. It still sounds good to me and there’s some really good songs like Tomorrow, It’s Ok, Bleecker Street and She’s A Heartbreaker among them. Class Of ‘77 ends with three songs from their live rehearsal tape. I’m not 100% sure was it a good idea to add them, because eventhough the songs are good the sound quality isn’t and it doesn’t make it that enjoyable to listen to them. However, the first one So Easy is such a great song that I suppose it would have been criminal to leave it out. Not as criminal as not giving this great band a record deal back in the seventies though.
