Change in the tide is upon us I will reluctantly say in case the water rises again. But for now the flooding has not got any worse where we are and in fact it has started to withdraw from the drive and back into the lane, which doesn’t look as bad as it did a few days ago. A few days ago it resembled a white water river, but now it’s like a bubbling stream. Because the lane is still flooded that means that we still can’t get out of the stables grounds and that also means that we are still getting no customers, or the part time girls arriving to work fri sat and sun. Which is why me and Motoko have been on the yard this morning mucking out and doing odd jobs, we are still going to work the mornings on the three days we have off until all this flooding is over, and the rest of the girls are doing afternoon and evening work.

Our home now has ten sand bags in front of our front door and ten sand bags behind the front door, this works really very well and hardly any water is steaming into our home now, so this is a really good thing! Also currently have some nice big logs on our fire and the warmth is really very welcoming and slightly romantic. As you can see from the picture below our floor is water free.

I put on my waders and strolled out to the sign I painted and put on the yard gate the other day, as I had to re-tie it back onto the gate as some of the cable ties snapped in all theses high winds that has been battering us. Motoko watched from the edge of the drive-way waiting for me to slip up and fall in the flood water, but sadly for her I didn’t hehe. Some of the paint has run off the sign but it looks ok, which is the main thing.

Below is a picture of our predicted weather for the rest of the week, and so far it is fairly on target. Though at the moment it’s raining pretty hard, but nothing like the rain we have been getting of late.

This made me smile found this on YouTube from the BBC© TV show Top Gear. They find out that Cumbria is indeed the wettest place in England.

Well that’s it for now, we are going to do some much needed house work and washing. Pile of work uniform to wash and other things like that. Then we are going to bake some muffins, since we ran out of our last batch.

Well today we discovered that the lane at the bottom of the driveway of our stables this morning has in fact become even more flooded and deeper than it was on the weekend. It’s also moved up the driveway a little bit more which means that the water is getting close to our home, which is not a good thing really. The water is still running though the yards and down the drive and passed our home, but good news is that we now have ten sand bags in front of our front door that hardly any water is getting though. To get into our home we simply open the top part of our front door and in, simple really. Picture below is some of our grazing flooded, and this was on high ground, the bottom two fields are a good 2 foot under water at the lower end of them so no using the bottom fields again this year me thinks.

For the staffs personal wellbeing me and Motoko and told them to wear their 66North waterproof clothing, we normally only ever use for hacking out. Reason is that the 66North clothing is same type as Ocean which is that oil skin type, but its orange and very hi visibility. Unlike our Ocean gear that is Orange and Blue. So all of our staff members now wearing their 66North clothing so they show up on the yard, this means we can see each other though all this flooding and rain. Also Motoko told them to go to their provided cottages and, do a stock take on all of their food and note it down and hand a copy to us so we know how long we can all home out. It’s good news as every one as plenty of supplies for a good whole week, and by then all this flooding should be slowly going. We have a plan to use our canoe and paddle around the flooded lane for supplies from local farm shop which is not as flooded as we are. Also Sam our friend is a flood response operative and she lives on the arm with her partner. So help is a flooded lane away if we really badly need it.

With all this weather no one as you know can enter our leave our stables, so today has been customer free. So that’s not so good, but means that there are no lessons and treks to take and lead. That means there is more time to work on other things.

I think it was a really great performance but not as good as their Devon gig which was just fantastic to hear.

Everyone here been really cheerful and up beat about the whole thing and Motoko has been wearing a lifejacket all day over her gear as a joke all day, that made me smile. Also have a painted sign on our yards driveway gate with a cartoon raft with lots of horses on board it. Was my idea, so I was the one to wade in and tie it to the gate, once again I got my hunters flooded. I really must remember to wear my waders next time I do anything like test the depth or put if funny signs.

This is our new home. In a complete change of everything, this home consists of a white studio. It means rather than making artwork in a domestic space as I have been for the past few years, I’ll be doing domestic things in an art-making space.

It will be very good to see what becomes of all the artwork I’ve made which I feel lives best in a domestic space now that the only domestic space I have is in the service of artwork. The pear holder and the cup handle holder and the things painted red. And to see what becomes of the ‘blurring of art and life’, as Allan Kaprow would say.

On Vyner Street a few months ago Anton and I found ourselves at either end of a piece of string and began to walk together to fold it in half. It was a nice thing to suddenly find going on, but then we noticed we were in an art studio and what we were doing might be ART. We let go of our ends of string somewhere between embarrassment and disdain. We’ll have to see what happens.

Ce am observat prin periplurile mele a fost multitudinea de lucruri care nu-mi sunt necesare. Nu mă refer la lucruri specifice vreunei meserii sau vocaţii speciale. Vorbesc despre obiectele de natură casnică (ca să le categorisesc pe toate în una – ofertă specială, ce mai), tipice oricărei locuinţe normale. Văd atâtea lucruri ciudate încât mi se pare că sunt comandate special pentru a umple rafturile giganţilor cash&carry şi nu pentru a fi vândute. De la vesela configurată în mii de forme, unele făcându-te să crezi că ai lua masa într-un ozn până la încălzitoare de mină de pix, găseşti orice. Inutile dar ghiduşe, groteşti ori banale, mărfurile din zilele noastre au configurat apogeul inutilităţii.

Un alt aspect este legat de diversitatea năucitoare. Ne-am dorit întotdeauna să avem de unde alege în funcţie de formă, culoare, textură, dimensiuni şi aşa mai departe dar s-a ajuns într-un punct în care clachezi. Paradoxal, dar adesea îmi doresc să am ca arie de selecţie nu mai mult de două-trei exponate. Aşa n-aş zăbovi jumătate de oră între 23 de nuanţe de verde ale vreunui tapet, de exemplu. Luând exponenţial necesarul de cumpărături, ajung să observ că afară e deja noapte iar eu sunt acolo dinainte de amiază. Mai mult, o treabă de genul o puteam rezolva în mai puţin de o oră.

Ce ţi-e cu firea umană, nicicum nu suntem mulţumiţi. Când e soare, de ce nu plouă, arşiţa verii de ce nu-i înlocuită de fulgii omătului hibernal, canadiana am schimba-o imediat cu un maieu iar cizmele cu balerinii. Şi viceversa. Afurisită treabă. V-aţi prins, totul e din vina super-hyper-ultra-giga-terra-marketurilor. În fine, trebuie să dau o fugă până la mall că e ziua reducerilor la electrocasnice. Nu acesta este motivul pentru care e musai să ajung cât mai repede. Studierea inamicului din interior e cea mai bună metodă de a-ţi pregăti tactica ))

Ieri am intrat intr-un magazin IT in cautarea unui cablu USB. Dupa culegerea lui din raftul de accesorii m-am oprit la raftul de laptopuri de unde am luat un pliant de prezentare a noii familii de laptopuri de la Apple.

Ce scrie la Design? Carcasa unibody. Cioplite dintr-un singur bloc solid de aluminiu, noile modele MacBook sunt subtiri, usoare, rezistente si extrem de atragatoare.

Mi-am adus aminte de ce am vazut intr-o fabrica de laptopuri in China. Baietii cu ochii oblici finisau carcasa de metal, cea care se gaseste sub carcasa de plastic, cu.. ciocanul. Cu lovituri tintite.. ochiometric.

Revenind in lumea noastra, au scris in ziare ca abia anul viitor Romania va avea macar un calculator in jumatate din gospodarii. Actualmente suntem la 47%. Anul viitor vom fi la 50% si in 2018 la 65%. In conditiile in care cateva tari din Europa au astazi mult peste cei 65% ai nostri din 2018. Performerele sunt Danemarca (88% din gospodarii), Olanda (87%), Norvegia (85%) si Elvetia (79%).

So, a couple of friends and I are hosting a dinner of the underground supper club variety.  And since I am headed to culinary school in six weeks, I pretty much defaulted to the position of head chef.  I usually serve as head chef in my own home and since the event is going to be held in my own home, I’m going to take the promotion lightly.

I brainstormed about a dozen themes and after much deliberation we decided on two: a timeline of food trends in California and bacon.  What is the current food trend?  Bacon.  What was served in everything from cornbread to breakfast in the 1800’s?  Bacon.  What did the native to the Los Angeles-area tribes Tongva and Chumash eat?  (Possibly) bacon.  What was the guy (and possibly his coastal brethren) eating before he died 13,000 years ago in a cave in Oregon?  (Maybe) bacon.

This is obviously a loose translation of history.  It is an even looser translation because I’m not into pork belly.  My bacon comes from vegetables.  (Well, mushrooms and beans.)

I decided to create a menu with the first course highlighting foods that were possibly popular 13,000 years ago with hunters and gathers.  I have a book called Prehistoric Cooking from the English Heritage press that gave me some ideas.  It references the preserved stomach of Lindow Man which is more than I had to go on.  The second course was inspired by the native and heirloom varieties that Gary Paul Nabhan, RAFT, the US Ark of Taste, Seed Savers and others are working to preserve.  The third course was directly inspired by the Little House on the Prairie books that my mom used to read to me.  Luckily, I had the The Little House Cookbook and Eating up the Santa Fe Trail (pieced together with a few west-specific passages from the library) to spark my memory.  The fourth course was inspired by the various blogs that I read and restaurants that I frequent with a bit of inspiration from Greg Atkinson’s West Coast Cooking.  (The beverages section alone will inspire a page full of notes.)  I had accumulated a huge list of desserts at this point and thought that someone with a sweeter tooth than I should select one.

Then I combined my inspirations with my collaborator’s inspirations and put together this menu.

So yesterday, for about 12 or so hours, I circled around our kitchen and made stuff.  Dinner was at seven and my cooking cohorts couldn’t arrive until 4 and 6.  My biggest concern was the bacon.  I tried three different varieties: tempeh, shitake and yuba. The recipes will divulged soon enough, but let me just say that you don’t need to plan more than two hours in advance or purchase stovetop smoker for my versions.

We didn’t get to test the doughnuts.  I thought that finding a doughnut pan would be as easy as a trip to Sur La Table (nope), Williams-Sonoma (didn’t think they existed), Surfas (not in stock) or Target (only offered online).  Next time.

My friend Arnaud was in town from Paris.  He lent his candid French opinion to the event and walked away quite happy.  MS and my cohorts were also thrilled.  We can’t wait until the actual dinner!  It is be November 7th.  Feel free to email me if you want an invite.

Well last weekend was pretty intense. A friend and I actually tried to raft up a river, in the freezing cold, at night. It was a good time. We cast off at 9:00 p.m. and made it quite a ways before we realized that we had holes in the raft and where in danger of sinking. Not a very good prospect when it’s snowing outside. So we pulled the raft up on the shore and made an improvised campsite from the raft and a sheet my friend had brought along (which he had procured from some drunk guys the night before)
So we tried to sleep till morning, because it would be a bad idea to try to go upstream in an inflatable raft, and we really didn’t know where we where. Se we figured that we would just carry the raft back in the morning.
I wake up at 3:00 a.m., freezing cold. I tried to stoke up the fire, put more layers of clothing on, but to no avail. So I woke um my buddy, explained the situation to him, and we decided to carry the raft back in the dark.
It took us about two hours to get back at around 6:00 a.m.
I went to sleep.

This little baby only set me back $4.99 and I spent the better portion of the afternoon floating on her. When you talk about simple pleasures, this would be at the top of the list.

Nothing like a day of hydrotherapy, floating away in the Gulf, the temperature of a bathtub on a day in the mid 90s. THIS is the kind of job I could get used to.

This little weekend getaway is the culmination of a very long birthday celebration. Turning 50 has not been bad. Not bad at all.
