“Charles Sidney Burpee was born in Sheffield, Sunbury County, New Brunswick, on June 18, 1817, the son of Jeremiah Burpee and Elizabeth Stickney. He was educated at the common school in Sheffield, and eventually became a farmer. He was married twice: first to Mary Perley and then to Charlotte H. Perley.

He unsuccessfully contested the Sunbury County seat for the House of Assembly in 1854. In 1867, he was elected to the House of Commons as a member of the Liberal Party for Sunbury County. He was re-elected in 1872, 1874, 1878, and 1882. At the General Election of 1887, he was defeated and retired from active politics. In 1900, Burpe was made a member of the Senate of Canada, and sat until his resignation to become Commissioner to the Paris Exposition. Burpee died November 29, 1909, at Sheffield. He was survived by two sons.

The Burpee Papers, which date from 1814 to 1949, are largely made up of Charles Burpee’s correspondence in which political discussions play a major role. A great deal of information on Sunbury County matters and personalities can also be found in the letters. Material, which is not correspondence, is found at the end of the collection, and includes legal papers, notes for speeches, and general information on the Burpee family. The series measures 13 centimeters.”

I’ve been working up in Oak Run, California about 30 miles east of Redding. Turkey hunting season starts the second weekend in November in California. So feast your eyes and ears on some wild turkey action in northern California. (It’s difficult to see any turkeys because this video was shot with a mobile telephone believe it or not, but you can sure hear them.) There must have been close to 40 turkeys (Hens from what I could tell. Couldn’t see any bearded Toms) “clucking”, “whining”, “cackling” and “gobbling”. Very exciting!

Here are some pictures of a rafter of turkeys I’ve seen regularly on my drive to work. The first time I saw them I was running a bit late and scared the heck out of them. The first one lifted up and flew away and then the rest of the group joined, all at once. It was something to see – these awkward birds flying across the road in front of me!

The day I took these pictures, I was driving at a much more leisurely pace and the turkeys were in a more zen place themselves.

I took the first shot through the windshield, certain that the birds would run away as I approached. To my surprise, they continued eating on the side of the road as I drove through the group.

I wish I could have recorded the clucking I heard as I took the pics from my side window. This is not a group of birds that would be able to hide undetected, they really can make a racket!

As for the title of this post, it really was just an excuse to include this video of a great 80’s band that never got a lot of airplay. The Tom Tom club was started by two of the band members of The Talking Heads. I really enjoyed their up-beat sound and have to pull up youtube every once in a while just to hear them. Happy Friday everyone! My official move north is this weekend!

Paper wasps build their nests out of paper. The paper wasp makes its paper by chewing tiny pieces of wood and mixing the pulp with saliva in this mouth.

The wet paper paste is then patted, pulled and stretched to form rows of cells, like those of a bee’s honeycomb. When the pulp dries, it becomes paper—something like the paper your newspaper is made of.

Each cell in the paper wasp’s nest is a nursery in which a baby wasp will grow. Hornets and yellow jackets make paper nests, too.

The paper nests are sometimes hung from tree branches or stuck beneath the rafter of an old barn. They may also be built in the holes in the ground.

Not all wasps make paper nests. The carpenter wasp bores holes in trees or old posts. The mud wasp builds a nest of mud. The cuckoo wasp doesn’t build a nest. It lays its eggs in a mud wasp’s nest while the occupant is away.

So….I grew up watching great tennis players such as Lendl, Edberg, Agassi, Sampras and Becker

So….I grew up watching great tennis players such as Lendl, Edberg, Agassi, Sampras and Becker…..Well Becker always sticks out as one of the unique people in the world who inpregnated somebody after receiving “oral pleasure” in a restaurant toilet…while his wife was in hospital with labour pains. Classy.

Each one of those players had something about them. Lendl and Edberg- nice guys who played the game in the traditional way. When their time was up Sampras and Agassi came along to take over. Sampras, a monkey like creature who had no personality and married Adam Sandler’s girlfriend from the cult movie “Billy Madison”. Sampras won a lot of money and tournaments being “mister nice guy” but not a lot of fans. Agassi on the other hand had the wild “David Lee Roth” hair style, wore fluoro cloured shirts and sweatbands, plus he was always agressive and fought over every call he disagreed with. Agassi also married Brook Shields (before his current wife Seffi Graf….What amazing tennis playing children they will produce). Agassi was that wild boy next door the fans loved.

With a few pretenders coming and going such as Jim Courier, Pat Rafter, Leighton Hewitt, Gustavo Cuertin, Juan Carlos Ferrero but to name a few we now find ourselves in the “Federer/Nadal” generation. Roger Federer, again is our Mr Nice guy who has no weakness against a fiery sex symbol in Rafael Nadal who plays every point as if it’s his last.

It brings us to the eternal question…..Is he the greatest ever tennis player? Like football has the great Maradona vs Pele debate, tennis now has a pool of a few to choose from. Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer are just some of the names that always come up. Borg left on such a high and nobody got to see whether he had the prowess to come back after going on an inevtible downward slide like all tennis greats. Sampras never really had the fan base for anybody to go “wow” about him. Federer on the other hand now has finally won his first Grand Slam on Clay .Winning in straight sets against Robin Sodderling of Sweden thus becoming only the 6th male ever to win all 4 grand slams. Is he the greatest ever though?

The debate will always continue I suppose, even when he over-takes Sampras to win his 15th grand slam and becomes the only male ever to do so.

Records are made to be broken, and history is always in the making. With Federer it seems like just another day at the office……

Leave your thoughts

I got my tank back from rafter at the 77 raffle part, so that and the fork ears were done in white. Rafter did a great job on it all, and I’m excited to get that bike back together. I still need to rebuild the motor (airsal, etc) and paint the 5 stars, maybe that will get done soon.

First though is getting the Limited up and running. The 2 speed suffered some exploded clutches the other night, so I need to pop in a new 1st speed and it should be fine. I got the forks painted and now all thats left is the wheels and I need a throttle. I just scored a set of my favorite tires, of course the michelin m29s, 2.75×17. Brand new and cheap too! Those will get mounted up once everything is together. My goal is to have most of it done by the end of next weekend, and hopefully running.

Derbi is up and running on the oko, but its still too rich and I need to still get that timing dialed in. We’ll see how much gets done this week with a chem midterm. We might get some track time on friday if everything goes to plan. Chappy will probably be on the chop block this week, I guess we’ll see what kind of interest it generates. I guess polini sold their stock chappy for 1k, so I’m hoping for more. Still need to figure out how we are getting to LA.

In its 17th year, the Noise Pop Festival is even more fierce than previous years. The festival, which runs Feb. 24 to March 1, 2009 in venues throughout San Francisco, brings together some of the best local artists with an incredibly impressive lineup of indie acts from out of town.

There are simply too many great shows to mention, and some of them are already sold out unless you buy a full festival badge. But here’s a small sample of some of the highlights.

Kicking things off Tuesday night is what promises to be a highlight of the festival, with Deerhunter and Lilofee at The Mezzanine. This show (get there early, folks — this one is free with RSVP) begins at 10pm and showcases one of the biggest buzz bands in the indie world. Their latest album Microcastle received rave reviews as a break-out album for this previously under-appreciated ambient rock group. Combined with local electro-pop band Lilofee, this show should kick-start the festival with a bang. If you’re looking for a more mellow festival appetizer, Antony and the Johnsons will play at 8pm at the Nob Hill Masonic Center.

Wednesday, let the games begin. The first full night of shows is packed with music with a John Darnielle solo set at Swedish American already sold out. However, one of the most exciting shows of the night, Stephen Malkmus (most widely known for his work with Pavement, but now performing with The Jicks) will perform a solo set at the Great American Music Hall at 8pm. The Jicks’ latest album, Real Emotional Trash, was released in March of last year to mixed reviews. Malkmus occasionally slips into old shoes and performs Pavement material at shows, but one can only guess about this show. Kelley Stoltz, Peggy Honeywell, and Goh Nakamura will open for this legendary indie rocker.

Sold-out shows continue into Thursday with Josh Ritter performing solo with a string quartet at the Great American at 8pm. It’s clear why concertgoers would immediately see the value in this show — Ritter’s tender folk rock will surely be breathtaking backed by a string quartet. And with Laura Gibson, Dave Smallen and Tiny Television opening, it promises to be a night of amazing up-and-comers. Ritter released a self-titled record in April of last year that consists of 12 songs he wrote in college. He will continue to tour nationwide through Spring. Two great local bands will also headline other venues that night — Thee Oh Sees and From Monument to Masses. As for all sold-out shows, hope is not lost! You can gain access to these shows by purchasing the ever popular Noise Pop Festival Badge which will grant entry into all shows during the festival.

With a new album pending, St. Vincent will grace the stage at the Great American Music Hall on Friday. Her debut record Marry Me has brought her international fame, and her live performances showcase her raw talent as a vocalist and guitarist. She’ll be joined by Cryptacize, Rafter and That Ghost at 8pm. The Independent will host yet another sold-out show (but remember, you can still get a badge!) from Ra Ra Riot. The band’s name matches their energy onstage, even with a cello and violin taking a leading role in their upbeat indie tunes. Their debut album The Rhumb Line has sent them straight to the top of the indie scene, with a performance on Letterman, a placement in Spin magazine, and much more. Cut Off Your Hands, Telekinesis and The Hooks will open beginning at 8pm.

Saturday, the festival reaches a peak with legendary punk rocker Bob Mould (best known for Hüsker Dü) taking the stage at the Swedish American. At 48, Mould still has a sense for what music fits him and fits his fans. A new album Life and Times will be released in April. Mould will be joined by Mark Eitzel (of American Music Club), Donovan Quinn and Jason Finazzo beginning at 7:30pm. Local buzz band Sholi will also headline on Saturday at Bottom of the Hill, with The Dead Trees, Everest and Jake Mann. Sholi’s recent shows with Iron and Wine and their signing to Quarterstick/Touch and Go Records have turned the eyes of many fans nationally. That show starts at 9pm.

Ending the festival with a bang on Sunday, New York indie legends Les Savy Fav will perform at The Mezzanine with The Mae Shi and The Drums. After six years of silence, Les Savy Fav reemerged in 2007 with Let’s Stay Friends. Having suffered from writer’s block, the album made fans and critics grateful for the quality that resulted in a final burst of inspiration — an album these “godfathers of indie” could be proud of. With no planned shows upcoming, this is a unique opportunity to see the band, perhaps before they head into the den in search of more material. The show starts at 8pm and thus we will bid farewell to Noise Pop 2009.

Of course, these shows are all on top of an overwhelming amount of film, art and industry events that will be going on all week. And there are multiple happy hour shows with fantastic local acts such as Maus Haus, Scissors for Lefty, Man/Miracle, The Aimless Never Miss and more. Check out the full schedule for more details and tickets, and have fun.

PLAN A: Bunky, Free Stars, Rafter Band @ Soda Bar. If the sound of his Sweaty Magic is any indication, Rafter Roberts has plenty of energy to spare. He’d better—dude is playing sets with all three of these bands. PLAN B: Molotov @ House of Blues. Veteran genre-blenders Molotov rap over dance-rock tunes, which may induce cringing. Not that they care—these Mexico City natives are all about throwing caution (and good taste) to the wind. –Todd Kroviak

Yay for Rafter and his magic band of animated animals:

Peppermill Records: a fun little netlabel based in the mountains of British Columbia, attempting to make interesting musical art.

Buon ascolto e/o buon lavoro!

As many of you who read this blog already know, I’m mostly indie rock girl but I do dabble in a little indie pop/electronica from time to time. I am attracted to that Euro/ambient/dub pop/downtempo groove. However, it’s the rare album in this genre that can hold my interest all the way through. Which is why you won’t find many (if any) electro/pop albums on my top 20 list for 2008.

But there were many great songs of this variety that stood out to me this year. And here is a compilation of some of those tracks that moved me. I love listening to this mix and hope you will too. Enjoy!

I loooove Rafter. Mostly because he’s a bona fide freak who makes really compelling, interesting and fresh music. Fast on the heels of ‘Sex Death Cassette‘ (one of my favorite albums) comes his new EP called ‘Sweaty Magic’. A distinct shift from his prior work, this album is quite bootylicious. As his label, Asthmatic Kitty, so aptly put it:

“Sweaty Magic is Rafter center stage in a gold Speedo (American Apparel banned at the door), firing lasers of love from his eyes. If you’re not shaking your booty by the second track, you might want to look behind you to make sure it’s still there.”

Asthmatic Kitty recently held a video contest and here are the winners to two of my favorite ‘Sweaty Magic’ tracks. Go ahead and ‘put a little salt in it!’

Number 49 In the opening seconds of their latest record, Sex Death Cassette, Rafter easily make thei

Number 49

In the opening seconds of their latest record, Sex Death Cassette, Rafter easily make their case to fit like a glove on the strange Asthmatic Kitty Records. Kicking things off is the psychedelic opener, “zzzpenchant”, busting in and making a statement that the record to come will indeed be an open playground for the band to experiment, and you’ll either absolutely love it or severely hate it; there’s no in-between. With the average track clocking in at around a minute and a half, this Cassette does right by giving us 19 songs to journey through, so in the end I didn’t find myself wanting more but rather saw it as just enough. The sound of Rafter is impossible to describe as they paint with every single color in the musical palette on this record, making us scratch our head when we think of what they could possibly throw at us next. They are certainly an acquired taste and a “I need to be in the mood for this” band, and I am definitely on their side after hearing this collection of music. My single favorite track on the record is “Sleazy Sleepy”, and the other standouts I have in bold below.

1.zzzpenchant
2.Sleazy Sleepy
4.I Love You Most of All
7.Chances
9.Breathing Room

Most residential projects and wood framed commercial projects utilize roof trusses. A roof truss is

Most residential projects and wood framed commercial projects utilize roof trusses. A roof truss is generally cheaper and less time consuming than a roof framed with rafters. It has these advantages because it is created from smaller pieces of lumber and it is fabricated in a shop and then only has to be set up in the field.

When we design a house we do a truss layout where we show where we anticipate each truss going and give information on what the shape of the top and bottom of the truss is, what the plate heights are and what the loading criteria is for the trusses. We also call out if the truss is a flat bottom truss, a scissor truss or an attic truss. Then the contractor gives our layout to their truss supplier. The truss supplier does the actual design of each individual truss based on our roof design. The reason for this is that each truss supplier may have a slightly different preference for how they construct the truss and they use their own proprietary software for the design. When the truss drawings are complete the contractor sends them to the Architect for review. Usually the drawings are right on when we review them.

The wrinkle that we are starting to see more of is municipalities requiring the submittal of truss drawings to their building department prior to the issue of the building permit. This can cost some time because typically the truss supplier doesn’t do their design until after they are selected as the winning bid. In other words the truss supplier has to be selected prior to the completion of architectural drawings, otherwise expect another week or two added to the schedule. Oftentimes in a bid situation the contractor hasn’t been selected at this point.

I’ve recently run into this new policy in Jefferson County and Commerce City, Colorado. I’d urge municipalities to look at this policy and consider going back to not requiring truss drawings to be submitted as part of the permitting process.
