The Selby, a blog by photographer Todd Selby, posts looks into creative people’s lives, workspaces and homes. Selby’s latest series focuses on Martin Greenfield, a tailor in Bushwick, Brooklyn whose shop has been in the same location since 1917. The photos were taken for GQ’s December ‘09 issue.

Greenfield’s shop makes suits for Band of Outsiders, Rag & Bone and many others. Back in April 2008, when we honored Massimo Bizzocchi as our ‘Best Dressed Man’ of the year, he mentioned a collaboration with Greenfield.

Greenfield started working at this shop in 1947 as a floor boy when it was GGG Clothes. He worked his way up to VP of production, and then bought out his bosses in 1977, renaming the business Martin Greenfield Clothiers. His sons Jay and Tod joined him in the 80s. Greenfield told The Selby that it takes about 10-12 hours to make each suit.

the rag & bone pre-fall womenswear collection presents effortless chic. the clothes are still casual, but still, there is an element of sophistication. i love that the rag & bone creative team doesn’t focus to hard core on hard-core elements of glamour & glitz, things are kept simple. we see black, blue & white with hints of off white; as well as the on-going trend of waist belting. no hints of red like some of the other collections but rag & bone usually maintains a minimalistic design aesthetic free from any hardcore influence of existing trends & other seasonal ‘of the moment’ style elements. simple collection. very chic.

Immediately when Ivanov starting modeling for Calvin Klein everyone knew he would be moving on to bigger things. Ivanov walked in 14 of the Spring 2010 menswear shows and has had a slew of magazine editorials. This guy is on his way to superstar status.

Patrick Kafka
Kafka won a modeling contest at the end of 2008 and was shot in various editorials, including L’Officiel Hommes shortly after. Walking the runway in some of the seasons best shows and widening his portfolio, Kafka is on track for a successful career with his unique look.

Comfort is key for Spring fashion as sweatpants make their debut. Once a fashion faux-pas, the baggy drop-crotch pants are now a chic addition to any ensemble. Designers like Yigal Azrouel, Alexander Wang, Elie Tahari and Rag & Bone can’t get enough of this comfy design. Take a look at these spotted styles!

Went to the downtown Saks Fifth Avenue on Michigan Ave. in Chicago a week ago. There was nice selection of Rag & Bone clothing but sadly I could not find pictures of them on the internet to post on my blog. But on the Saks Fifth Avenue website they did have this one Rag & Bone Houndstooth Sportshirt that I really liked. It’s a nice, slim-fit shirt.

Winter is here but I still see people wearing the wrong things outside, so I’m going to help you out! Here are a few of my suggestions:

Let’s start with the coat. Pea coats are the best because of it’s versatility. Try a Pea coat like the one in the picture below designed by Adam Kimmel.

Next you’re going to need to cover your neck and chest with a scarf. I suggest the Flat Knit scarf by Prada.

Last but not least, wear a hat. If you could pull it off, I’d go with the Trilby by Rag & Bone.

Taylor Momsen was spotted filming Gossip Girl on December 2nd wearing a Loeffler Randall coat with contrast sleeves and carrying YSL Roady bag. Can anyone ID those fierce booties?

Because my body temperature seems to average about 10 degrees cooler than a normal person’s, scarves are a staple in my wardrobe most of the year. If you are starting to feel the chills of December too, take a look at some of this neckwear, found in shops all over the city.

Online shopping is really great for “big” purchases… If they’re not in your state, no sales tax and often times there are random free shipping offers. So find a site you love, and sign up for their email updates. Spot your fave item and order when they have sitewide sales or free shipping.

That’s from an article from the front page of yesterday’s The Wall Street Journal.  Ok, it wasn’t a headline, but still — front page.  Maggie Betts, 34, was quoted in Rachel Dodes’ article about how fans of the harem pant trend are subjected to an alarming degree of ridicule, including the occasional “Hammer Time!” taunt.   Dodes writes that harem pants have been a top seller despite inciting polarized public reaction, but I’m grateful those sales aren’t coming from anyone I have to look at daily.  You know, it’s nice to hear a 34 year-old still use the word, “loser” — although this is from a woman who also wears harem pants.

So what’s a girl to do if she’s looking for the comfort of sweatpants, minus the fashion reference to the flashy 80’s rapper, that she can actually wear in public?  I recently stumbled upon incredibly comfortable, equestrian-inspired pants from Eryn Brinié.  Unlike leggings, which I think only look on 19 year old Eastern European giraffes, these pants don’t depend on stretch alone for fit.  They’re really cut well, with contrasting black panels along the waist and sides that actually make your hips and legs look slimmer.  And while I’m not a fan of synthetic fabrics, they are thermal without being bulky, superbly soft, and well-made.  If you’re devoted to Rag & Bone’s Classic Leggings, you’ll love these.

One note — they have hidden side zippers at the ankle, so having them hemmed might be a pain.  They fit best if you’re 5′6″ to 5′9″ (the model in the photos is probably 5′8″), and run true to size.

I have them in both colors (navy/black,  brown/black), and I’ve been complimented by three gay men in the two weeks I’ve had them.  Enough said.

The problem with being a self-aware, (relatively) self-controlled shopaholic is that I know my upper limit. Edon Manor, selected as one of the best boutiques in the West Village

Rag & Bone 104 Christopher Street between Bleecker and Bedford

One of Retail Specialist Elliott Dweck’s favorites, Rag & Bone has simple yet chic styles for both men and women. Their pieces are classic and well-made, with a great selection of high quality denim. The shop is in one of the busiest neighborhoods of the West Village, not far from recently leased space 11 Christopher Street.

Darling Boutique 1 Horatio Street

Filled with top designers like Yumi Kim, Quail, Max & Cleo, as well as their own label, Darling Boutique has a romantic and feminine style. It’s the perfect place to find a dress for a special occasion. The shop also has a quiet garden in the back for shoppers to take a break from the bustle of the city. Nearby is space for lease 24 Horatio Street, which is also a nice spot for a boutique.

Albertine 13 Christopher Street

With Victorian inspired decor, Albertine sits right next to leased space 11 Christopher Street. The shop has a comfortable feeling, with a friendly staff, soft couches, and a collection of vintage jewelry and leather boots. The owner Kyung Lee, tries to choose smaller, unique labels, making it a spot for shoppers looking for a one-of-a-kind wardrobe.

Edon Manor, 391 Greenwich Street

A cross between a country manor and a glamorous Victorian dressing room, Edon Manor is filled with rare books and custom made velvet furniture. The store sells clothing, shoes, and accessories with brands like Givenchy and Alaia. One of their most impressive features may be their shoe selection, carrying designers like Valentino, Moschino, Chloe, and Vivienne Westwood. The store is nearby space for lease 50 Hudson Street.

Actress Sienna Miller attended  Rag & Bone Soho store opening last night.  She showed off her legs in a pair of  Rag & Bones’ Pliss Tweed Shorts , she completed the fall trend with her signature bootie.

Il était installé dans un coin de la pièce, proche des grandes fenêtres qui jetaient des carrés de lumière grise dans le café. Il avait dû glisser quelques sachets de sucre sous les pattes de la table pour l’empêcher de balancer au moindre mouvement. Devant lui s’ouvrait un cahier de croquis aux pages vierges, une paire de lunettes qui ne s’accordaient plus vraiment à sa vue, un crayon de type 2B, une gomme à effacer malmenée et un café fraîchement infusé.

Il n’avait pas encore pris en main son crayon, ni touché à son café. L’esprit ailleurs, il regardait le morne paysage d’automne à l’extérieur dans l’attente d’une inspiration. C’est alors qu’il la vit s’approcher. Elle marchait ni rapidement, ni lentement, mais elle avait une démarche gracieuse et décontractée. Ses longs cheveux châtains lui arrivaient aux épaules et frisottaient à cause de l’humidité.

Le sang de l’artiste ne fit qu’un tour lorsqu’elle entra dans le café. Il l’observa se diriger directement au comptoir. La serveuse, l’accueilli d’un sourire et l’invita choisir une place. La fille la remercia doucement, sa voix était basse et mélodieuse avec une pointe d’accent français, peut-être belge, puis s’installa à quelques tables de l’artiste.

Elle retira son sac ainsi que son foulard puis se concentra sur le menu. L’artiste pris alors son crayon et commença à faire le portrait de la fille. Il la regardait intensément, ne s’attardant sur son coup de crayon qu’à peine une fraction de seconde par minute, comme s’il avait peur que la fille ne n’évapore d’un seul coup. Elle commanda un espresso double allongé ainsi qu’une pointe de tarte à l’érable malgré l’heure matinale. Il s’attarda sur la ligne douce de son cou, la coube de sa mâchoire. Elle sortit un bouquin et commença sa lecture. L’artiste la vit disparaître, mais pas comme il l’avait craint. Au contraire, elle resta bien assise sur sa chaise et devint complètement immobile. Les jambes croisées au niveau des genoux, les coudes sur la table et le visage dans son livre, elle tomba dans une immobilité quasi statuaire. Elle ne s’animait que pour tourner une page de sa main droite. Ses doigts fins d’allongeaient alors, soulevaient une page parchemineuse et la poussait doucement vers la gauche.

Dans cette bulle d’immobilité, l’artiste détailla un a un les grains de beauté dans son visage ainsi que chacun de ses cils courbés dépouillés de tout maquillage. La serveuse lui apporta sa commande, mais la lectrice ne fit pas mine de s’en apercevoir. Ils continuèrent ainsi, l’une lisant, l’autre dessinant pendant un temps jusqu’au moment où entra un duo d’étudiants bruyants. Le son des voix fit sortir la lectrice de sa torpeur qui referma son livre et attaqua son café maintenant froid et son dessert. Elle regarda sa montre, rangea précipitamment son bouquin, paya sa note puis affronta la pluie qui commençait à l’extérieur.

Sur son papier, l’artiste avait fait naître une femme simple et belle, penchée sur Anna Karenina.

I don’t really know how much time it’s been since the last time I posted, but comments kept coming, so I thought I’d come back around here. School is hard. I’ve barely had any free time in the past month, let alone time to read and/or blog. Now it’s midnight, I’m wide awake, and I felt like writing a bit. Maybe some bullet points will make my randomness more “look, he can organize seemingly unrelated ideas properly” and less “look at that piece of unstructured prose over there.”

- I looked at pictures from Spring 2010 fashion weeks, and I was kind of underwhelmed. As usual, I loved Burberry Prorsum, Rag & Bone, Yves Saint Laurent, and (oddly enough) Alexander McQueen. As usual, I hated Marc Jacobs (Kabuki theater? Please, that disaster of a fashion show was obviously inspired by homeless people), John Galliano, and Louis Vuitton. I thought Prada was meh, as were most of the American designers.

- I haven’t had a lot of time to read lately, but I am becoming such a Neil Gaiman fanboy. He is awesome. I just can’t get enough of “Fragile Things” right now. I wanna be like him when I grow up!

- I used to think Marketing was a fun subject, something I could’ve done if I hadn’t chosen International Business as my major a long time ago. And the class was cool… for about two weeks. Now it is the most annoying, time-consuming, boring 3 hours of every week. Okay, maybe not the most annoying (Statistics takes THAT particular prize), but it is not enjoyable at all. I miss not having homework and/or quizzes every once in a while.

- I got a Chuck Bass haircut, inspired by awesome editiorial he had in the July edition of American GQ. I like it.

- I think I’m gonna add my 2009 reading list to this blog. EDIT: It’s done, AND it has Amazon links!
