Ragdoll, the creepy, ‘Raggedy Andy’ contortionist of the DCU. A cold blooded murderer, a treacherous teammate, his body a patchwork of surgical scars…how could this little scamp NOT be a fan favorite? He’s like the little engine that could, but with MURDER! And a better costume.

This is actually the second time I’ve cobbled together a Ragdoll custom. The first (along with a Secret Six style Parademon) ended up in the collection of a ‘Six fan after she spotted ‘em here on my blog. Woof, talk about no good deed going unpunished…you should have seen the looks on the faces of some in my gaming group when I broke the news. Turns out Secret Six-themed teams were popular, I teased them with the ability to go full-roster and then took it away. Yeah, comic fans can be a reasonable bunch when you mess with their plans. Anyway, I promised to make new customs for my gaming group and now, six months later (irony!) I finally got around to it. You can check out my second stab at a Parademon here.

Ingredients: I dug around for a thin, spindly body and came up with Ragman (Collateral Damage). His head came from…hmm, some bald dude. I’m guessing Ultimate Electro (Ultimates). His hands came courtesy of Dove (Crisis), and to—hopefully—convey the broken, loose feel of the character, the pose I went with required some figure support. The pillar from the Question (Origin) delivered the goods.

Lots of little detailing went into this bugger. Each strand of hair is a thin strip of index card paper twirled for that “perm” look, a pinpoint of Elmer’s used to hold it in place. Repeat until he had a full head of hair, shape the final style with tweezers and then PLOP, a drop of Krazy Glue hardened the whole mess. The same trick went into making his scarves. All the assorted stripes on his costume will make you want to push your expensive, fine-tip paintbrush through your eye and into your brain. Enjoy!

Secret Six (Volume 3) #15

This guest issue by the old Suicide Squad team was decent. It recapped the origins of Deadshot and his first meeting with Batman – things I didn’t know about the character. It always nice to learn about a character’s history. Caliafore’s art was good and was consistent with the art on this series usually. I think there were some things that were unclear about Deadshot’s family but all-in-all I’d say that this issue was a success.

Whenever birds start to chirp outside my window, you could hear 2 figures scrambling at a LIGHTNING speed onto the bed nearest to the window. 2 of them would stick their heads and rest their heads on the window grills to look at the birds. As you can see, the fat cat on the right, could not even bother to pull the curtains apart and place himself at a more comfortable position as compared to the skinny one on the left.

His oh so glutton-ly actions just made my day. (:

Then again, exams are in 2 weeks.

Secret Six (Volume 3) #14

If you are not reading Secret Six, if not just for the fact that Ragdoll says that (title of my post) to Mr. Smythe as he bashes his head in with a wrench. I can’t say that I didn’t cheer while reading that. Not to mention the perfect ending where Deadshot kills the bastard. Simone shows how great she is at writing Wonder Woman here by showing what kick ass fighter and leader Diana is. Bane takes over the team and kicks Scandal off in a surprise move. This was an action-packed, beautifully drawn, and fun issue. By far the best thing DC is putting out right now.

Andy is a Ragdoll. This breed of blue-eyed cats is supposedly even-tempered and docile; loving and placid; doesn’t shed much; and enjoys being held.

Hah! I will concede that Andy has blue eyes. He also has orange ears, an orange nose, and lots of matting, shedding white hair. He hasn’t a placid bone in his body. Once in a great while he’ll let himself be cuddled, under protest. Not that he isn’t affectionate, in his way. He especially likes to sit on the back of Lee’s chair and groom his head. Or alternately, climb up on Lee’s chest when he’s on his back in bed, stick his nose in Lee’s beard, and knead his neck. If Lee’s not around, Andy will get on the back of my chair and do the grooming thing. He sprawls on the desk when I’m typing, within reach so I can give him a scratch. And stands right in front of the computer so I can’t see the screen.

Andy is the most curious of cats. He’s an into-everything, bat-things-off-the-shelves sort of cat. He loves the outdoors. We have a screened-in patio that partway satisfies his desire to be outside. He periodically sneaks out when one of us isn’t quick enough to close the door. Fortunately, there are so many fascinating things outside that (so far) we’ve been able to catch him before he vanishes from sight.

We’ve been deep in home improvement these past few months. Most recently we updated the bathroom. The rest of the room turned out so well we decided to replace the shower fixtures. Access to the shower is through a closet in Lee’s office, by means of a large piece of plywood that is generally nailed down. When the plywood is removed, not only is the back of the shower accessed, but also the space below the house. We said to each other, better keep the closet closed.

(I think Mozart the raccoon is living under the house. We had all the crawl space openings closed up after last year’s adventure with the dead possum. Shortly after I made Mozart’s acquaintance, my next-door neighbor came over brandishing a big stick and said there was a big raccoon under the house –I’m not sure what he thought he was going to do with the stick; Mozart is big enough to take it away from him. I looked and sure enough, one of the crawl space coverings was ajar. I propped it back up, with bricks. The next day it was open again. I figured, what the hell, and left it alone.)

(I went out one morning last week and the cat food container wasn’t where it was supposed to be. I found it in the back yard, tipped on its side. I suspect Mozart came for a snack, found no food, and had a hissy fit.)

We did keep the closet closed. Until the day we didn’t, and Lee saw Andy wandering around outside. We’ve no idea how long he was out, or how far he went, but he hissed when Lee picked him up. Lee was shocked. Usually I’m the one who grabs Andy, so I’ve been hissed at before. However, the hissing didn’t stop for a good half hour after we all went back inside. Andy was so jacked up he went running through the house hissing at me, at Lee, at Mo, at nothing and everything. When he stopped hissing, he started meowing. He wanted to go back into the closet. He wanted to go outside. He may have wanted to go hang out with Mozart, for all I know.

He still wants to go back outside. He wants to go into the closet, though the opening has been closed up, and the contents restored. He meows and meows. I feel bad for him, but ragdolls are indoor cats. They’re lovers, not fighters. Supposedly. Gentle, placid, goofy Mo can yowl ferociously when strange critters come around.

Mo has no desire to go outside. He likes to sit inside the patio door and watch the birds eating the feral’s cat food. We step around him as we go in and out and he doesn’t even budge. Mo’s the easy child.

Andy isn’t. We’re thinking about a leash.

Secret Six (Volume 3) #12

I like how Wonder Woman can take Deadshot down by swatting her fingers but Jeanette punches her and Diana actually bleeds. This shows how powerful Jeanette is. Jeanette is revealed to be a banshee in this issue and even looks like the Silver Banshee but I have no idea how people become banshees in the DC Universe. I suppose I will look that up. This was another great issue.

All of the Secret Six are so messed up it’s great. Ragdoll desperately wants to look good in Wonder Woman’s boots and tiara, Bane thinks prison would be the perfect way to live, Scandal being trained in horrific violence by her own father…I love it! Oh and they are all very willing to kill each other. This was a violent issue so once again I have to say this series is not for the squemish, but it sure is great!

The Story: Half the team (Bane, Scandal and Jeannette) are on the run on the lunatic island prison with Artemis, who is looking to save other Amazons. The other half of the team (Deadshot, Catman and Ragdoll) are watching Wonder Woman being prepped to be the supper for some gruesome monster. And, they’re being sent to track down and kill their rebellious colleagues. Simone even fits in a romantic look at Liana K. struggling with her feelings for Scandal.Random  note: Being a Canadian sci-fi guy, I actually met Liana K. in real life.

What’s Good: The art was great. There are so many names on the art team this month that I couldn’t tell you who did what, but whatever twister game they used to decide who would draw what panel, the end product is great. I would even say that the art in this issue beats the solid art in the last. There are a few faces that look a little forced, but there are many others that are expressive, clear, and beautiful.

There’s a lot of tension and immediacy in the danger the Secret Six is in right now. But somehow, without breaking the pacing or relieving the tension, Simone showed us Scandal’s childhood, some vulnerability in Bane and Jeannette, more funny weirdness in Ragdoll, and some moral compass in Catman and Deadshot.

Simone is also a deft hand at handling issues that others would find difficult to balance. She managed to fit extraordinary rendition, a modern-day run-around of human rights, into the story without making it look preachy or clunky. She depicted a lesbian romance without being titillating or crass. And while almost all her characters kill at some point, she spent a moment in this issue humanizing the victims of the Secret Six. Well done, Ms. Simone!

What’s Not So Good: Having Wonder Woman unconscious in front of the monster who will eat her, but then deciding with no explanation to tie her up nearby was weak villainy and Simone could have done better. She’s a solid writer and plotter who didn’t need to fall back on this clichéd (and creaky) plot device. In the end, despite the danger, neither the monster, nor the Secret Six’ employer come off quite as scary as all that. The former is a bit too cartoony, and the latter is a sociopathic Mr. Rourke with a different kind of island.

Conclusion: Gail Simone continues to hit doubles, triples and home runs. If you like your heroes weird, anti-social, filled with a healthy dose of lethal vigilantism, you should be reading this book.

We are back in Toronto. Feels good to be home. Spent the entire last week of summer sick with colds. Small price to pay for great health and a great summer in Barbados. Today is Labour Day. Tomorrow is back to school. Talking of labour, still feels like yesterday. Now, each of my three kids will be in three separate schools. How did that happen? All I know is that the adjustment might be a little awkward at first. Like this picture. Makes sense but seems upside down for some strange reason.

Having spent an entire summer with my kids every single day I should be elated. Or should I? They have been my little friends. My little foes. But mostly, my little heartbeats for the summer. I have so enjoyed my time with them. All the things they experienced, many for the first time in Barbados. Sailing on the ocean. Witnessing baby turtles make their way to the sea. A mother turtle laying eggs. Snorkeling on a ship wreck. Diving. Reconnecting with cousins they had forgotten. And the list goes on… All good. Great actually.

Une nouvelle semaine va commencer.

Et celle qui s’acheve a ete plus que chargee. Je suis en plein dans l’histoire, Rome antique, remise a niveau en geographie et X-XI siecle. Le tout parseme de methodologie. Ca ouvre l’appetit right?

Donc le matin, je rejoins le Starbucks apres avoir dejeune avec Matheu, un caramel macchiato tripple shot au lait de soja  a porte de main et des piles de bouquins / fiches / listes que notions a maitriser. C’est dur. Mais ca me plait.

Faudra que je vous ecrive une petite note sur les habitues du starbucks, c’est une etude sociologique a elle tout seule.

On a fait une petite viree a Ikea un soir. On est revenu avec une bibliotheque (faut bien un rangement pour tous ces bouquins !!) et … et … et … et …

Quatre au total. (et ce n’est que le debut, une petite plante grasse me fait de l’oeil, ainsi qu’une feuillu verte)
Et oui, visiter la maison de Rose m’a donne des idees !! Elle sent bon le bonheur et la vie… J’adore ce lieu.
Donc nous avons decide de mettre de la vie (en plus des chatons) dans l’appart, incarnee par des plantes. Elles ont trois jours et sont encore en vie. Pas mal pour une Pomme etourdie !

Reste plus qu’a trouver un moyen pour mettre la terrasse en valeur. Empecher les chats de sauter cinq etages, installer la verdure et de la lumiere. Ca va doubler la surface du salon, juste en ouvrant les portes de la baie vitree !!

Sinon, ce soir ou demain, je vous poste des photos de la robe.
Meme si je n’ai aucune envie d’assister a ce mariage, elle n’en reste pas moins tres jolie.

Bon je vous laisse, les patounets de Gribouille sont tout secs, faut que je file acheter de la creme.

Il est huge, a seulement un an et demi, deja 7kg. Et dire qu’il lui reste encore plus de deux ans de croissance !

~ Lau ‘ : J’habite a Singapour, donc en fait, je retourne environ tous les trois mois en France, pour passer des exams, voir mon pere, acheter des bouquins, profiter de ce beau pays, a petite dose !

~ Lea : J’ai 22 ans, et ca va faire trois ans que j’habite sur l’ile.

~ Plume : j’ai repris mes etudes en histoire, avec le CNED. Donc ca me laisse la liberte de faire mes cours a Sin, tout pres de cheri et des chats.

~ Clotilde : pour le no-poo, tu peux utiliser n’importe quel apres-shampooing qui ne contient pas de silicione (les ingredients qui se terminent par -ane ou -one). Les silicones forment une barriere protectrice sur tes cheveux, qui les etouffe au fil du temps. Le seul moyen de l’enlever, c’est d’utiliser un shampooing tres riche en agent detergent, ceux que tu cherches a eviter avec le no-poo. Donc pas de silicone, et le tour est joue !

     It’s the newest issue of Secret Six, and Wonder Woman is pissed.  Yay for crossover!  Anyway, when Deadshot calls her an Amazon, Wonder Woman tells him not to say that again.  So this is post-Rise of the Olympian.  Deadshot shoots at her, and all hell breaks loose.  Mr. Smythe watches the battle from his compound and talks about some mysterious beast.  Vandal Savage has everyone run as far as they can and cover their ears, and suddenly as Wonder Woman beats Jeannette up, she unleashes her banshee powers.  She looks a lot like Silver Banshee, so my guess is that’s what banshees look like in the DC Universe.  Jeannette makes Wonder Woman feel and hear her own decapitation, and thus, Jeannette wins the battle.  She passes out shortly later.  Catman insists on staying loyal to their employers, so the team splits in half.  Bane, Vandal, and Jeannette also take Artemis, though Catman insists on keeping Wonder Woman to give to Mr. Smythe.  Artemis wakes up and saves Vandal and Bane, and Catman, Deadshot, and Ragdoll meet Mr. Smythe’s devil, a mysterious creature living under his compound that is part of his plan to recreate the Nine Levels of Hell from Dante’s Inferno.

     Well, that fight between Jeannette and Wonder Woman was just epic.  And remember, Jeannette was the last victim of the completely nutty noble and serial killer, Countess Bathory (a real person, by the way).  Since she killed Bathory, she was a killer even before she became a banshee.  Jeannette is one of the coolest new characters in any comic that I’ve read in the last year, so props to Gail Simone for coming up with someone so interesting.  I’m sad to see the Six split up, but I know it’s only temporary.  Catman will find out something really bad about Smythe’s operation or something, and they’ll all be forced to regroup together somehow.  And Artemis is pretty kick-ass too, by the way.  She’s no Wonder Woman, but she’s pretty dang tough.  This series continues to make amoral characters lovable, and Gail Simone does such a good job with it all that you can’t help but love it.  And the focus on Jeannette made this one of the best issues of the series.  Oh yeah, and Nicola Scott’s pencils made things even more awesome.  So even if Simone doesn’t knock things out of the park with Wonder Woman, she’s doing so in this series.  I’ve loved almost every issue, and I look forward to seeing more of the twistedness of Mr. Smythe.

With the craze and current app boom of the iPhone app store, I have created this feature to appeal to the people who own these pocket computers (AKA: Rich, aristocratic suburbanites). iPhone app of the week will showcase an app a week that demonstrates true creative talent, and is fun to play.

This Week:

Ragdoll Blaster is a puzzle game. Yes, its a puzzle game. You solve said puzzles by shooting ragdolls to move things, reach things, and power things mechanically. You have to somehow have a ragdoll reach a physics enabled target. This seems like a simple concept, but it actually progresses steadily in terms of difficulty. Eventually, the player will have to do things like power a Rube Goldberg type machine by shooting ragdolls at various components, then hit the target before it rolls out of sight.

The controls aren’t something you would expect from innovation. You tap an area of a screen to launch a ragdoll there. Physics controls the rest. Its not the as other games like Tap Tap Revenge or some of the other titles that Apple has featured on their commercials. But its controls aren’t what make it fun. The fun is when you finally figure out a level, and then experience the joy of beating it. Yeah, not a very original concept. But Ragdoll Blaster gets so hard that eventually, assuming you beat any of the later levels (and there are lots of them) an immense sense of satisfaction washes over you. Its a sense rarely achieved by other games. And all the while being calmed by one of Beethoven’s symphonies, well, its just a great package deal. Give this game a try, it will not let you down!

We have two more weeks left of our summer vacation in Barbados. Words cannot describe how good this has been for my children and I. To give my kids a taste of what my life was like growing up is so important to me. This summer has been all about reconnection. To home. To roots. To sun. To sea. To family. To friends. To Barbados.

Now my kids want to reconnect every summer.
