I decided that rather than just complain about female MC’s not getting enough credit and recognition, i’d get down with some affirmative action and make a top 10 list. Runners-up, MC’s who just released one or two tracks and MC’s I admit that I just need to hear more material from before considering them for the list include: Antoinette, Monie Love, Dimples D, Foxy Brown, Tiye Phoenix, Li’l Kim, Heather B. and The Real Roxanne. Who else did I forget?

10) Eve/Remy Ma

This is split between two very talented MCs who have yet to put out a dope LP. Eve Of Destruction from Philly is almost always on point, but has been held back artistically by exactly what has given her commercial succes: Wack to medium beats aimed for MTV and collaborations with wack rappers and pop artists. But when she gets a nice beat and rhymes for the heads, as on You Got Me by The Roots, you can see there’s enormous potential there. Remy Ma doesn’t have the intellectual lyrics or diversity of content that Eve has. But she is raw, confident and hard as nails. Reminisce is married to Papoose. They also share an unfortunate habit of putting out tons of mixtapes of varying quality. Sometimes you really have to dig for the gems. Also, as you probably know, she is in prison (expected release: 2015) and probably won’t be making a mark on the hiphop scene for quite a while. Still, she’s the illest female street MC of the modern era, as witnessed on tracks like Lean Back by The Terror Squad and my favorite Remy jam, Cancel Christmas with Papoose.

09) Salt ‘N’ Pepa

Some of you are probably shaking your head at this selection. I agree that Pepa and Salt are not exactly the female Rakim and KRS lyrically. And yes, they have put out their fair share of annoying pop fodder. But if you’re an older head or just know your 80’s stuff, you will remember and treasure classic 12″s like The Showstopper (originally an answer record to Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick’s 12″ The Show/La Di Da Di), Beauty And The Beat, Push It, Tramp, Twist And Shout and Shake Your Thang. So they haven’t made any classics in the last 15 years, but neither has LL Cool J and he still has legendary status.

08) Apani B-Fly Emcee

Apani B-Fly Emcee was my favorite female MC for years during the indie era in the late 90’s/early 00’s. She burst on the scene with Estragen in 1996. Then she dropped dope verses on big tracks of the time like Pharoahe’s The _ss, DJ Spinna’s Time Zone and Da Beatminerz’ Shut Da Fu*k Up. She was also one fourth of the underrated group Polyrhtyhm Addicts, who released the LP Rhyme Related in 1999. Apani was the illest MC on this album, which featured tracks like Motion 2000 ( I love this joint!), Big Phat Boom and Should Have Known Better. Her string of dope solo 12″ singles was awarded even less attention. But I really liked tracks like Spot Me, Strive and Progress (which isn’t even on youtube) and I’m glad I collected these records. Since then she has dropped the “B-Fly Emcee” from her name and appeared in a documentary talking about a forthcoming album called A. But I don’t think that ever came out? Let’s just hope Apani hasn’t disappeared from the scene all together!

07) Jean Grae

I must admit I’ve been very slow when it comes to BK’s Jean Grae. Her name kept popping up here and there but she sort of flew under my radar for some reason. Only recently have I noticed her ill lyrics, presence on the mic and unusual consistency. Already several LPs and EP’s deep, she has proven she can hold her own with, and even outrhyme, giants like Masta Ace and Talib Kweli. She has some really dope tracks to her own name too, like Keep Livin’ and Hater’s Anthem. My sources tell me she is also great at rocking a live show. She’s a really complete MC, so don’t do what I did. Don’t sleep on the Grae!

06) Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah is perhaps better known as an actor today, which is a shame, basically. She ruled Tommy Boy and the Flavor Unit in the late 80’s and Lyte is the only one on this list who has more classic cuts. Or what do you say about tracks like Ladies First, U.N.I.T.Y., Latifah’s Had It Up 2 Here and Roll With Tha Flava?

05) Bahamadia

We enter the top five and you can tell by the quality of MC’s we see here. You should all be familiar with Bahamadia already. You probably know she was a DJ originally and that she has one foot in the spoken word café scene of her native Philadelphia. In the classic late 90’s version of the Gang Starr Foundation, Bahamadia was the only female artist and the queen of monotone. Her debut Kollage (1996) is a straight classic LP from the golden era of the GSF. It has tracks you know and love like 3 Tha Hard Way, Total Wreck and Da Jawn. I’m also a huge fan of the 1999 Rawkus B-side Chaos that she did with Reflection Eternal. In 2000 she dropped an album (or actually a double EP) on GoodVibe entitled BB Queen. This one didn’t get a lot of love as heads missed the Premier and Beatminerz beats from the first album. A lot of people also had a hard time adjusting to the fact that Bahamadia had developed her vocal style into even more monotonous and subdued territory. I agree it was not on par with Kollage, but everyone needs to stop sleeping on tracks like Special Forces and Commonwealth (Cheap Tricks). I saw Bahamadia do a live show here in Stockholm just a couple of years ago and she can rock the crowd too, no matter what your prejudiced view on people associated with spoken word might be.

04) Rah Digga

Why Jersey’s Rah Digga is not a household name by now is a mystery to me. She’s a battle rapper and a dope album artist, just like MC Lyte. She has underground bangers produced by Premier and Pete Rock as well as club material and cuts that sound like instant hits for the commercial market. Yet her LP Dirty Harriet didn’t get too much of a buzz and she remains relatively unknown outside of her fan following. Discovered by Q-Tip, she was the only female member of Busta’s Flipmode Squad and Da Outsidaz. And, with the possible exception of Busta, she was my favorite MC in both of the crews! If you haven’t heard tracks like Lessons Of Today (Premier), What They Call Me (a BANGER by Pete Rock), Fu*k Y’all Ni**as, Do The Ladies Run This… and Handle Your B.I.…well, then you’re just missing out. I still play the Dirty Harriet double LP today. Her new album The Big Ten is due out in april 2010, in time for the tenth anniversary of that album.

03) Roxanne Shanté

You all already know about Shanté; important member of Marley Marl’s Juice Crew, 1980’s queen of diss tracks and answer records. She had tons of attitude and fresh 80’s B-Girl flavor. Plus a voice you never forget and that has been sampled heavily through the years. Take your pick from a catalogue of immortal classics like Have A Nice Day, Roxanne’s Revenge, Bite This, Def Fresh Crew, Big Mama and Brothers Ain’t Shit. She has not cut any new records for a while, but continues to rock the mic occasionally. I saw her in that same live show with Bahamadia and it was def fresh indeed!

02) Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill is one of the illest MC’s ever. She’s also a very good singer, but that must come second, especially on a list like this. She was the only MC worth the fuss in The Fugees and pretty much carried Pras and Wyclef, in my opinion. On their first LP, Blunted On Reality (1994), she stood out on tracks like Vocab and Nappy Heads, but noone predicted the artistic development or commercial succes that would follow. 1996’s The Score of course sold something like 100 trillion copies in a year, much thanks to Lauryn’s contributions. By now, her singing was attracting fans that wouldn’t touch rap with a ten foot pole. But she dropped iller rhymes than the last time around too, and definitely iller than the two guys. Her rhymes on The Score, Manifest and Fu-Gee-La are classic. In the next couple of years a Fugees member would appear in every third video on MTV. Lauryn was on songs by everyone from Common Sense and Nas to Wyclef and even Aretha Franklin. Singing beautifully. She did lay down a couple of rhymes on Rumble In The Jungle, the track that The Fugees and the Tribe did on the soundtrack for When We Were Kings, but she wasn’t rapping much anymore.

When that classic solo debut, The Miseducation Of Ms. Lauryn Hill dropped in 1998, it was universally celebrated and it probably is the best album she was ever on. But me, I was a little sad. It’s not that I don’t like her singing. I love it. But there are probably hundreds of talented female R&B singers in the industry. And there’s still very few female MC’s on the scene. Especially female MC’s as ill as L-Boogie. They come along like once every ten years. So, I’m not dissing her for chosing to focus more on her singing and I congratulate fans of Soul music everywhere. I’m just saying: for us hiphop fans who get tired of hearing 99% dudes on the mic, it was a bit of a loss. Having said that, the album did feature some songs with her best emceeing to date. On joints like Lost Ones, Everything Is Everything and Doo-Wop (That Thing) she gave us some really nice rhymes and left fans fiending for more. I saw her in concert in 1999, touring off the Miseducation LP. The unforgettable show had true hiphop atmosphere and the DJ set and MC parts of the show actually got lots of love from the crowd. After that she went another route of course, which is of no consequence for a list like this.

01) MC Lyte

Not only the illest female MC, but one of my top 10 favorite MC’s ever, period. Most people rate the early MC Lyte 12″s as classics. I’m talking about I Cram To Understand U (Sam), Paper Thin and 10% Diss. In fact, most people who have heard it list the entire first LP as a classic aswell. It’s called Lyte As A Rock, and apart from the three 12″ tracks it includes an absolute showstopper called Kickin’ 4 Brooklyn, which has been often sampled since then. And we mustn’t forget the title track, Lyte As A Rock, which is my favorite joint on the LP and perhaps throughout Lyte’s entire career.

MC Lyte came on the scene with a raw hunger and youthful energy unrivaled by almost anyone to this day. From the first 12″ she had absolute command of the mic. She had rough and humourous battle rhymes and one-liners for days. Heads who remember the second LP, Eyes On This, or have since discovered it, usually rank it on pretty much the same level as the debut. But for some reason demand seems to be low for both of these LP’s. No represses have been coming out, yet prices for the originals are low, compared to other classic albums of the same era. You have all heard Cha Cha Cha and Cappuccino of course. But are you aware that Eyes On This features production from people like Grand Puba, PMD, Audio Two and Marley Marl? Dope beats all the way and Lyte had developed her mic skills aswell. Lyrically this is probably the nicest album by a female MC ever released. Don’t sleep, ’cause you might slip!

Album-wise, Lyte would not reach these heights again, but she would continue to bless us through the years, with fresh singles and collaborations like I’m Not Having It, Ruffneck and Poor Georgie. Classics all the way. More recently she managed to hook up with annoying pop phenomenons Puff Daddy and Missy Elliot and still come out on top with the big hit Cold Rock A Party, which I personally love, no matter how you may feel about it. Just a couple of years ago she hooked up with someone who gets a little more street cred than the aforementioned, namely none other than DJ Premier, and released a dope track called The Wonder Years. There was an LP supposed to drop on the back of that, but sadly it hasn’t materialised yet. Then in 2008, there was an EP by her new group Almost September, but nothing more after that. The game needs Lyte! Crate Adventures salutes the illest female MC ever.

Peace in the middle eas’!

Bonus Footage: I was trying to find a clip of what I thought was Jean Grae for like two years. I heard this girl rapping on interludes for 9th Wonder’s 2007 Dream Merchant II. The only female emcee associated with him, or so I thought at the time, was Jean Grae so I just assumed it was her. In the process of looking for this clip I learned that it was not Jean Grae. It was in fact a female emcee named Rapsody. You learn something new everyday. Please enjoy and pay thorough attention to the second clip…9th Wonder is a beast, but Rapsody’s voice just….well watch it.

Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
★ / ★★★★

I decided to revisit this movie because it scared me when I saw it back in middle school. Directed by Steve Beck, “Thir13en Ghosts” was a mess in every sense of the word. A father (Tony Shalhoub), his two kids and the nanny (Rah Digga) were invited to visit a home they inherited from an uncle (F. Murray Abraham) who dedicated his life collecting spirits. Not knowing that there were ghosts locked up in a basement of a mansion made out of glass, the family decided to visit, along with a psychic (Matthew Lillard) and a man (JR Bourne) who let the family know about the inheritance. This movie did not make sense to me. It spent about half of its running time showing the characters walking around the place and arguing. It quickly got annoying because it didn’t help the story to get anywhere near interesting. In fact, I really wanted the ghosts to escape their respective cells and start killing off the characters because maybe then they’d stop arguing and finally face the mission at hand. I was astounded that there were twelve very interesting ghosts (various methods of scaring and killing their victims, for instance) but the audiences never really get to know them other than their names. Some of them were obviously angry and were prone to attack anyone, while some of them looked more sad and just stayed in one corner. It made me wonder about their varying reactions to their visitors. The “scary” scenes were aided by a booming soundtrack so I didn’t find it to be truly scary. The violent scenes might have been gory and kinetic but my actions of flinching and looking away had nothing to do with genuine fear that is requisite of truly chilling horror pictures. If the movie didn’t take itself too seriously, it might have worked in some angle. There were some lines voiced out by the nanny that were very amusing but none of it was enough to save this sinking ship. If Beck spent more of his time actually helming the suspense instead of the violence and loud sountrack, this definitely would have been a rewarding experience. Instead, the audiences unjustly got a movie with loud barks and no bite.

“Following the success of the Show and Prove showcase/competition, I noticed the lack of a female presence on the stage, but recognized their strong presence in the crowd. It hit me that ‘Show And Prove’ is an obvious platform to show that Hip Hop is not gender struck. Without MC’s like Rage, Bahamadia, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Rah Digga and so many more, Hip-Hop would not be what it is today. YUME and Brooklyn Bodega feel responsible to provide a launching point for emerging female MCs and artists who are so often overlooked.” – YUME Member Michael Peterson

Here are the finalists:
Gypsy Flesh – STRENGTH, SUBSTANCE, STYLE, STREET & SOUL is defined in Most Women today, especially in this Emcee. Beautiful, young and talented this South Bronx native possesses a larger then life personality.

Inspired by Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill and Al Green, Gypsy is all about Inspiring Others. Whether through her Music or her constant commitment to her community through her non-profit organization, Gypsy’s Big Heart shows when she’s working with children.

Hard at work on her EP, “The Evolution, her Music will add Inspiration for those that listen. Known for her thought provoking, concept driven, and inspirational sound, Gypsy the Emcee, the Entertainer, Business woman, and Leader is on the verge of being more than a STAR.

Zarinah - Zarinah has been called a staple in the Philadelphia hip-hop community. She is known for her constant support. Being born and raised in Philadelphia she grew up in the illest eras of music. Taking a quick hiatus to the other side of the country, living in New Mexico for about 5 years is where a great deal of her Latin influences came from. Listening to various genres of music from alternative to soul she knew that music would change her life.

She was involved in varying performing arts such as Hip Hop, Jazz and Afro-Modern dance which were studied at the Koresh Dance Company and with her own dance troupe. All the while taking various acting courses at the Wilma Theaters. At the same time she studied piano under the incomparable jazz pianist Dave Burrell and soon after studied vocals under the beautiful jazz vocalist Sherry Butler, former backup singer for Teddy Pendergrass. Soon after taking a break from dance and solely focusing on music, she decided that music would be her main focus.

Being inspired by musicians such as the late great J Dilla, Beyonce, Black Milk, Carmen McCrae, Incubus, Lauryn Hill and Little Brother, Zarinah strives to make her own lane and earn the respect of her peers. Currently she is working on various collaborations with other artists such as Charlie K of Writtenhouse (Philly) KennStarr of the Low Budget Crew (DC) and Chaundon of the Justus League (NC), as well as her own projects which include: The Dope Becomes Her mixtape.

Kallae All Day – The young rookie from Queens is busy making her way in this Hip-Hop game. Both MC and vocalist, Kallae All Day is a breath of fresh air. A talented MC with a fresh perspective she will add Show and Prove to her growing list of accolades.

GNU – GNU, pronounced NEW, was formed by the hand of angels in 2035 BC. The all girl trio is now a full force musical movement of lyrical opuses and magnum cum louder! The group exists only in excerpts of stage performances and public stints. Their music can’t be found via myspace, facebook, or twitter, in order to experience GNU, you must come a live performance.

So I thought of putting up actual playlists that you can listen to. I’m not the best playlist maker

So I thought of putting up actual playlists that you can listen to. I’m not the best playlist maker and I still need a lot of practice, so if this isn’t the best thing in the world, well, too bad. However, I just listened to this when I was high, and I think it’s actually pretty good.

I would start this playlist when you first light up. The first song is amazing to listen to, and its repetitive nature makes it great to listen to when you’re smoking because you can be distracted and still really enjoy it. I’m not going to go through the rest of the playlist, but generally speaking I think there’s a good transition between each of the songs and even though there’s a drastic shift of mood, it is done pretty smoothly and without a too sudden shock.

Needless to say, this is an intense playlist. So if you’re not in the mood for that, just don’t put this on. Finally, if you’re missing up to three songs from this playlist, I would recommend either downloading the songs that you’re missing or ignoring this post altogether.

Do It Again – Three Legged – Sam Jogo
Dear Mr. Man – Never Forget: A Series of Revelations – Prince and Cornel West
93 ‘til Infinity – 93 ‘til Infinity – Souls of Mischief
Definition – Black Star – Black Star
Put It On Remix – Dangermouse
Bushonomics – Never Forget: A Series of Revelations – Bushonomics
Da Mysetery of Chessboxin’ – Enter the Wutang (36 Chambers) – Wutang Clan
Who Shot Ya – Born Again – The Notorious B.I.G.
Clan in Da Front – Enter the Wutang (36 Chambers) – Wutang Clan

Shy but confident…The “strong silent type”. IMAKEMADBEATS aka NeMo lays low in the background, always grinding and politicking.
Born in the Left Coast (Ca.), bred in the south city of Memphis, he now rests his head in NYC.
He is a dynamic beat chemist, thanks to the musical impact his family had on him, mainly his pops. The late great Dilla was also a huge inspiration.
The masked man worked with local artists (from Orlando to Tampa) such as Illustrate, J Biz, Critical, Butta V & The AB’s formerly known as Asamov while living in Central Florida. He later worked with internationally known artists including (Smif-n-Wessun, Mic Geronimo, , Fredro Starr, Sabac Red, Planet Asia, Rah Digga, Beretta 9 (Killarmy), Shyheim, Roc Marciano etc.) & corporate America – with beats licensed to various forms of media (MTV & Univision to name a few).
He is a licensed recording engineer at Quad studios in Times Square and has a production team, StrangaZ Productions, with his just as talented brother, TzarizM.
Another Ozone (Orlando) resident, and NeeMz’ right hand man, is MidaZ The Beast. They collabo’d, made BlakOut & in turn are making the album titled Nightmusic. BlakOut is also working with Beretta 9 (Kinetic 9) on a project called Trilogy.
His other current projects consist of a collabo with Toronto Rapper Felony aka J Freedome, formerly known as Felony (also featured on the Transcontinental), titled “J Freedome and IMAKEMADBEATS are The Sound of Freedome”.
The self titled album, IMAKEMADBEATS, featuring Black Milk, Steele, Roc ‘C’, Supastition and more. It will be coming out in June
And the very anticipated Transcontinental project with Roc ‘C’ of the Stones Throw Family. This is going to feature Rakka Iriscience (Dilated Peoples), Chino XL, Wildchild (Lootpack), Big Pooh (Little Brother), Oh No & more.
Transcon received a Japanese licensing deal (& worldwide distribution) with E1 Music (Formerly Koch) which came out in Japan on Dec 12th 2008. It is due out in the US on May 19th. Dont sleep!!

Now this takes me back! Who remembers Nikki D? She, without a doubt, is the original “gangster b@tch” (no disrespect)! Her flow was hardcore, and her music often packed an positive message. She could hang with the dudes and still maintain her lady-like qualities. Her stay was short, but memorable.

The intro to this video was hilarious to me. Terrible acting. That’s a brave dude on the bottom. Lol! Salute…

This week’s throw back is Nikki D’s “Lettin’ Off Steam”:
