This weekend the Backyard Bang went off in downtown Denver at the Art Institute. Milling through the crowd during the morning set up, some of the first people to be found were local Echo fans that had come out to enjoy a day of shred and to support the Echo Team. High fives were distracted hellos as everyone’s attention was on the 3 stories of scaffolding in the middle of the intersection. With so many familiar faces showing up early on, the day was shaping out to be a promising one.

Tucked between tall city buildings in the shadow of the capital building, the setup took shape with 3 options; a down flat down rail, a gap to down box and a rolling down box complete with hubba options. After a warm up session of testing out features and figuring out tricks the competitors were unleashed in 3 different heats. Echo Team riders Collin Backowski, Andrew Burns, Seth Hill, Nick Brewer and Marc Moline got after it early with Seth, Nick and Marc all making the finals.

In the Finals there was no holding back as bruised and bloodied competitors threw down banger after banger and kept going back for more. In the end however, only one person walked away with the $2000, Six Eight Six team rider Forrest Bailey. With so many familiar faces and a great showing from the Echo Team, the Backyard Bang was an amazing event. Thanks to everyone who came out to show their support and thanks to the Team for throwing down.

Yesterday was an awesome day at the Burlington Free Press. I felt a little weird going down but when I walked in to the office I got to watch Ryan taping an episode of the paper’s “Live Wire”. Live Wire is an online vidcast that goes out every week. It features local bands and musicians from the Burlington area. I can’t exactly remember who was playing but he sounded nice, kind of a folk indie hybrid with a splash of country. As soon as I can get more info, and a link to the video, I’ll be sure to post it. But just being around all that multimedia really gave me goose bumps. It was awesome to watch a live taping of something that was going to be shifted onto the internet in the matter of a few days, and then next week they have to come up with something new. A lot of creative thought going into this project, hope it works out.

After watching Ryan tape the Live Wire session we started looking over my pictures of Champlain’s Rail Jam 2009. That was my kind of self assigned photography project of the week. It took place last Friday on Aiken Lawn at Champlain. It was a real experience for me in a photographic sense. I was shooting the fastest subjects I’ve ever tried to catch in a camera before. Not to mention the nerves I got from the nine other photographers around me trying to all get the coolest shots of the contestants speeding by. My first problem was the lens I was shooting with. It was a lens of Ryan’s that I had shot with once before doing portraits on church street, it was a wide angled lens and didn’t zoom. So in order to get anything decent I had to get as close to the skiers and snowboarders as I could, without getting hit, and breaking a lens that wasn’t mine. It was a little awkward at first, but I eventually got the hang of it, here are a few of the shots, and all of them are up on Flickr if you’d like to see the whole album.

As we were going over the pictures Ryan pointed some things out to me that I should improve on. Some to remember for next time. Take risks, I really need to remember this one. There’s a lot more going on than just the event, get the people around the event, get up close and personal, capture their emotions. The ambient light can make a cool silhouette effect with the light going around the subject.

Anyways, it’s definitely time to catch some shut eye before tomorrow, it’s going to be a long day.

Skiers and snowboarders will be shredding the University of Wisconsin- Madison campus Thursday, Nov. 12 5 p.m. until 8 p.m..  The Wisconsin Hoofers, a student activity club, is hosting a rail jam at The Memorial Union Terrace on the shores of Lake Mendota.  Hoofer’s inspiration?  “A growing crowd of freestyle skiers and snowboarders out there who love showing off their talent.”  Registration is $25 at www.hoofers.org.

The Chicago Ski and Snowboard Expo, otherwise known as Ski Dazzle, will be in Chicago, Ill. this weekend, November 6, 7 and 8.   The traveling show’s Chi-Town stop will feature hundreds of booths displaying ski retailers and resorts throughout North America.  This year’s expo also includes a rail jam.  Rail jam entry fee is $35, which includes a ticket to the show, space is limited though, so signing up asap is wise.  Prizes from the jam range from gear to team sponsorships.  Freeskier Magazine, out of Boulder, Colo., will be covering the event.  Side note: a purchased regular admission ticket comes with a free lift ticket to Shanty Creek Resort, a hill in Northern Michigan.  Start kicking off the Midwest season and check SkiDazzle.com for more info on this event.

ACT FAST!  Friday, November 23 3-9pm the Greenhouse Coffee Co. in Whitewater, Wisconsin and The Board Shop in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin are hosting the Fresh Brew Rail Jam.  The event will take place at the Greenhouse Coffee Co. on Main St. in Whitewater.  The competition will feature separate divisions for skiing and snowboarding with 1^st – 3^rd place announcements along with best trick.  To compete you need to sign up ahead of time by calling The Board Shop at (262)248-1703, they’re only taking 30 riders total.  Entry fee is $20 for students, otherwise it’s $30 and a “promo bag of goodies” comes with entry.

The event will also feature a DJ, BEER TENT, product toss and onsite reps.

Raging Buffalo Snowboard and Ski Park hosted the second annual Southside Rail Jam this past Saturday.  The slushy mud-fest took place on a sunny afternoon.  Skies were blue, temperatures mild, and vibes positive as Midwesterners flocked to the Chicago area for some much needed preseason rail time.  Along with a heap of snow, Raging Buffalo brought in one of their flattop rails, a wide box and a narrow box.  The drop-in and surrounding park remained snowless.  The event was open riding.

We have had a lot of friends and fans show us their work, and ask us to put it on our shirts. So we decided to start an open design contest where anyone can submit and vote for the design they like the best. We know there are a lot of talented people out there and we want to give them a chance to see their work on one of our tees. Voting doesn’t begin until the submission deadline is over, but we will be putting up some of our favorite designs early just to show you some of work… so keep an eye out. If you miss the deadline, be sure to submit it to the next contest that will be starting after this winner is chosen.

The Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour is currently rooted on the west coast, but in reverse settler fashion, there are intentions to spread east.  Although the tour was scheduled to make stops at Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin- Madison this October, financial restrictions from sponsors have put these destinations on pause until fall 2010.  According to a post by CRJT on newschoolers.com, “[CRJT was] ready to make the trek and crush the Midwest with our new events, unfortunately some of our partners we’re not.”

The goal of this grassroots snow sports movement is to promote the amateur ski and snowboard scene.  The set-up takes place right on campus, transported snow and all.  The tour aims “to provide you with a well-rounded event, utilizing creative rail features, jamz you can dance to, ridiculous post-shred partying, and an overall awesome experience.”  Unfortunately, unless you’re privileged enough to attend school out west, you’re going to have to hold tight for yet another year.  You can learn more about the tours at CricketCampusRailJamTour.com.

Twenty (20) of the most progressive rail riders from all over North America will be shredding in Occidental Park in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square on Saturday October 10 from 2-5pm.

How bout an after-party at the Pyramid Brewery with Seattle’s own Minus the Bear? Yep…but you gotta buy a ticket for that.

As always this event is TOTALLY FREE so pack up the car, hop on the bus or skate down to Pioneer Square to watch some radical shredding, hangout with homeless folks (besides Gus Engle) and have a damn good time.

This is an awesome idea. Hopefully this takes off across the country. The class actually moves around rather than most gym classes where you stand in line, waiting to do some stupid shit like shoot a bow and arrow or play volleyball. Can’t wait til this catches on around the country. Check this vid out!

October 17th- Northern Illinois will be getting some pre-season action.  Raging Buffalo Snowboard and Ski Park is hosting the 2^nd annual South Side Rail Jam in the parks of Homewood Illinois (just outside of Chicago).  The good folks of Raging Buffalo are trucking in snow and ice chips (super fun to ride on!) and bringing in their boxes and rails.  Not only is it a chance to get back out on some park set-ups, but also the jam is free to enter.  There may be ‘Best Trick’ but this rail jam is mostly a chance to ride and hang with those that love to ride too.  Check out the event on FACEBOOK for more details.
