The Rainbow Six series have been around since the late 1990s throughout a range of console systems, portable systems, and the PC. Most of the games have been stellar, but there have been some duds such as Lockdown. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a direct sequel and partial prequel to the events of its predecessor Rainbow Six Vegas. The game has various multiplayer modes and a single player campaign. The player also has a lot of customization options this time around as well.

Graphic and sound:

The graphics in Rainbow Six Vegas 2 are almost identical to the previous iteration with no changes in the game engine used. Everything from character models to environments look realistic and behave naturally. Sound effects and voiceovers are on par with other titles in the series.

Gameplay and controls:

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 has a single player campaign that can be played in co-op mode with one other player or solo. The multiplayer modes available are: Item Extraction, Hostage Rescue, Demolition, Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Total Conquest, Team Leader, and Co-op Terrorist Hunt. Item Extraction involves having one team locate and retrieve intel while the other team attempts to stop them. Hostage Rescue consists of one team extracting hostages to a safe zone while the other team prevents them from doing so. Demolition involves having one team planting a bomb while preventing the opposing team from defusing it before detonation. Deathmatch is a free for all mode in which player compete with each other for most kills. Team Deathmatch is identical to Deathmatch except that players compete in teams instead of individually. Total Conquest consists of teams capturing satellite transmitters and holding them for 30 seconds. Team Leader is a mode in which teams have a leader selected within their team that must be protected from the opposing team. Co-op Terrorist Hunt is a co-op mode in which four players cooperate to eliminate all terrorists on a level. Controls in the game are very easy to use and the game walks the player through most of the equipment and control buttons used to navigate through the game. Multiplayer in RSV2 is very fun, especially the co-op modes where players are forced to work together as a true team against the CPU AI.

Overall thoughts:

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a positive improvement over its predecessor. It allows for gaining XP for character customization from both the multiplayer modes and the single player campaign. Also, the player can use voice commands to control their squad and direct them into the battlefield. I highly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of squad based tactical shooters or fans of previous Rainbow Six or other Tom Clancy tactical shooters.

Dear Big Whinny Babies: While I very much enjoy playing Team Deathmatch with 23 other gamers, I find

Dear Big Whinny Babies:

While I very much enjoy playing Team Deathmatch with 23 other gamers, I find it more then humorous that there are a few who are always quick to cry to the host: “boot that guy off! He got in my way and I almost died!”

Though it sounds more like: “waaaaaaa waaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaa! The big bad man made me miss! I almost got shot! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!”

Of course it’s always the cry baby with the microphone and the loudest voice who is always telling people what to do. They just keep crying and crying non stop until they get what they want. And, it’s always the big suck that thinks this is really life and death.

I have news for you sunshine. It’s a game. It’s a game where your character dies over and over and over, and you come back to shoot again. You get to keep playing! There are actually no consequences to this at all!

For those of you who are unaware of the premise behind this game, it’s a first person war type shooter where you can play on one of two teams, with up to 12 people or so per team. The host, or person who sets up that match, can decide what weapons one is allowed to have, and if friendly fire is allowed or not.

It’s really quite hectic, with bullets flying everywhere, grenades, and people running quickly in and out of rooms.

But should one happen to try to run into a room at the same time as another, and one of those people feels offended by that incredible transgression against their movement, even for one moment, AND if one of those two people has a microphone, then you can bet he’s the one that will start crying like a colossal suck to have the other person booted out of the match.

Usually, the host has better things to do, like I don’t know, oh, maybe play the freakin’ game! But a lot of times, the host will either boot the person being accused, just to shut up the whiner, or because they know the whiner. Unfortunately, if you don’t have a microphone to instantly respond to the wittle baby looking to suckle on his mommy’s teats, then you will indeed get booted.

To conclude this little rant, it’s a game. Get out of your mother’s basement, and grow the bloody hell up if you can’t take a little heat in a bloody war game!

Games That Can RUIN a Relationship

In a world with an increasing number of multiplayer titles more and more gamers are playing together

In a world with an increasing number of multiplayer titles more and more gamers are playing together whether it be in cooperative play or side by side in ranked competitive matches.
However, you might want to be careful if playing with a sibling, friend or spouse, as some games can absolutely ruin a relationship (or at least cause a LOT of fighting).
Without further hesitation, here are some of the games I truly suggest thinking twice about when playing them with a person you want to continue your relationship with.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2

Some games can be difficult and others can be thought provoking…this title blends difficulty and intelligent gameplay like no other title before it.
The problem is that the odds are either you or your partner won’t be as able minded as the other and thus lead to a lot of aggravating deaths (especially if you try realistic) followed by conflict. You can only endure so many attacks from the rear due to a partners lack of being alert or sit back while you have to wait for your partners respawn for the 10th time in one chapter before you want to lose your mind.

Gears of War

For those who remember the original Gears, you depend on your ally immensely because of one simple fact: the game chooses to separate you frequently and once you are just downed (not killed) the game is over as an A.I. partner can not revive you. This alone can lead to “what the hell are you doing on your end” being said ad nausea.
Add in some gut wrenching infuriating moments (UV turret anyone) that require precise teamwork and focus and now you have the beginning…of the end of your peace in the relationship.

Dead or Alive 4

If you thought playing a single player game was a good idea, try and make sure you re-evaluate what the single player game is. This (albeit a great fighter) game is one of the most soul crushing heart shattering miraculously difficult games in existence. The boss fight with alpha-152 (believe that was her number – final boss – ) can put you into either a rage fit or a depressive bout, depending on how you handle your emotions.
If you have anyone near you and they say ONE thing that can be taken as wrong, you will, without doubt, get into a fight and let all of that pain out of your system…on your buddy/spouse/sibling.

Resident Evil 5

For some reason Capcom saw fit to make you unable to move when shooting while having to manage items in an awkward template in real time. This alone will frustrate you.
Now add in the fact you and your partner need to watch multiple points of entry, fend off waves of agile zombies while moving like a tank yourself, and ration off ammo and health that comes in a VERY low supply and this mix of needing supplies with irritating situations leave a lot of room open for some personal chaos.

Sacred 2

This is a dungeon crawler hack and slash experience with so many technical issues you could vomit. Lousy hit detection, glitched out mounts, random spawn deaths, getting stuck on terrain, and so on will already have you seeing red.
When playing co-op, make sure you don’t add fuel to the fire and check your new gear/dropped items EVERY TIME YOU GET ONE. Honestly, I think ALL of us have played with a person (online or local) that goes “Oh, whats this” and stops the game or breaks the party progress since they need to see what new and shiny item they have. This, over time, will make you want to find a new partner…to play with.

Well I hope you enjoyed these samples of games that can seriously put a dent in your relationship. So before you fire up that game, try to think if…
- You plan to keep this person around
- How they play a certain genre of games
- If you have any comfort food, a punching bag, or a stun gun handy just in case

Live and Let Game !

Here we go, 60-51 in GregHorrorShow’s Top 100 Games! A quick recap on how I decided who came w

Here we go, 60-51 in GregHorrorShow’s Top 100 Games!

A quick recap on how I decided who came where:

I decided, as so many games mean so many different things to me, I should come up with a fair way to judge them. This is what I came up with:

Time Spent Playing

Storyline

Difficulty

Fun

Ground Breaking?

A few provisos before we hit the next ten games…

Firstly this is my list of my Top 100 games. I certainly don’t expect you guys to agree with it (though hopefully you’ll agree with some of the choices ) and would welcome any comments.

Secondly, I’m not planning on putting the scores or totals up, just listing the games in the order they came out in.

Lastly, I never owned a Nintendo or Microsoft console so my experiences on these games were limited to friend’s houses etc – bite me

Let’s crack on with the next ten…

60. PAPERBOY (ZX Spectrum)

I reckon most people in the world have played Paperboy, with it’s near crushingly difficult streets and inhabitants. This is one of those games that will have you screaming in frustration one moment and celebrating a perfect delivery in the next. There are objects flying at you from every direction and all you’re trying to do is deliver the papers. Also loved the training sections at the end with the ramps etc. A nice slice of gaming history.

59. RAINBOW SIX VEGAS 2 (Playstation 3)

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was a great follow up title featuring more of the same tactical SWAT style shenanigans. If you like your shooters fast and furious (ala Killzone 2) then this won’t be for you. Methodical planning and several ways to strike make this a tactical dream. But it’s still a FPS at heart and there are a few frantic firefights waiting for you as you return to the Strip.

58. HEAVENLY SWORD (Playstation 3)

Heavenly Sword was supposed to be THE game to showcase the power of the PS3. But somehow everyone got caught up in how good Nariko’s hair looked and the game got itself some lukewarm reviews, with it’s short length (5 Hours) cited as a problem. For me this was a fun hack n slash that actually did a few bits better than the genre defining God Of War games (combos for a start). Yes it was short but it was really enjoyable and the cut scene graphics still rank up there as among the best I’ve seen. Worth checking out, especially as you can get it for about a tenner now.

57. STREET FIGHTER IV (Playstation 3)

As comebacks go Street Fighter IV has to be up there with the best of them. Other than Mortal Kombat nothing had come close to touching Street Fighter II for years – Tekken on the PSOne was the most fun following SF II but we all knew Ryu and co. wouldn’t be beaten. So imagine our surprise when the trailer for SF IV turned up. Sweet artistic graphics? Check. Decent roster of old and new characters? Check. Same move sets but with a few added extras? Check. Street Fighter IV is one of the best looking fighting games ever. And the fact they retained the move sets means anyone who has ever played Street Fighter II can pick this up and get involved straight away.

56. DESERT STRIKE (Sega Mega Drive)

Desert Strike sees you piloting a helicopter on covert missions in the Middle East. Whether it’s blowing up satellites or rescuing M.I.A’s (soldiers Missing In Action, not the pop star ) you will have a blast. Using a mixture of machine gun, rockets and hellfires (big rockets ) you will be tasked with all sorts of missions. The ‘copter was a bitch to control most of the time but that only made it more fun; seeing yourself bounce off a building as you reverse at full speed always raised a chuckle. Memories of my Dad being up until 3am playing this also raise a smile

55. CAPTAIN COMMANDO (Arcade)

For years this was known as the ‘game with the baby, y’know, the baby in the robot suit’ by me and my brother – much to the confusion of 99% of people we were trying to explain it to. This arcade machine suddenly appeared in a local shop one day and once we played it we were hooked. It’s essentially a re-skinned Final Fight but with the added bonus of being able to use ED-209 style bots throughout the levels. Oh and did I mention the BABY IN A ROBOT SUIT!

54. MIRROR’S EDGE (Playstation 3)

I completely applaud EA for putting this title out and trying something new. This is a game that is totally first person (while you play) but involves very little shooting and lots of parkour and hand to hand combat. It’s not often a company will take a punt on something as ambitious as this and it has it’s problems but Mirror’s Edge has a lot of heart and it was a great gaming experience – possibly one that might shape future first person games so that they aren’t all shooters.

53. ROBOCOP (ZX Spectrum)

Man, I loved Robocop on the ZX Spectrum. Shooting criminals, then putting together photofit ID’s of them. Then shooting some more… This was one of those games that looked amazing in the arcade and… quite frankly didn’t on Spectrum. However the gameplay was there and I spent a lot of time on the streets, trying to wipe out the OCP scum

52. SPACE INVADERS (Arcade)

Another classic like Pacman – the gameplay of this title is almost ingrained in our pysche. Defending yourself from the hoardes of aliens, while trying no to shoot at your own shields is one of the most basic yet fulfilling gaming experiences. This was back in the days when there weren’t levels as such, or an end to the game. It was all about the points. And they were there to be racked up in Space Invaders, as you faced huge numbers of enemies. There’s something almost tragic in the fact that basically you can’t survive the invasion – it’s just a case of fighting them off for as long as possible before dying as they take over

51. RACE DRIVER: GRID (Playstation 3)

Race Driver GRID is one of the best driving games on the market and featured a revolutionary new gameplay mechanic enabling drivers to rewind the race (up to 4 times) and effectively have another go at that tricky corner or overtaking manouvre. It really does bring a whole new dimension to the gameplay, making people more likely to take risks and therefore have more exciting races. The graphics of the game itself are really impressive and the crash mechanics are up there with the Motorstorm series. The World Tour mode is very deep and offers plenty of different options. Definitely one to pick up if you don’t already own.

So there we go, we’re at the halfway stage!!

Graphics The graphical impression left on me is one of a love hate relationship. For the love portio

Graphics

The graphical impression left on me is one of a love hate relationship. For the love portion, I was a huge fan of the environments in this game. From the varying locations (warehouses, casinos, parking lots, etc) you never felt like you were in the same place twice. Also, and in my opinion a key factor, the levels were designed with multiple layers and points of entry, all of which appeared like natural extensions of the world itself. But I absolutely hated the hideously common enemy models as well as the sketchy and unimpressive characters. Overall, I think the attention paid to the environments paid off as I walked away pleased.

7/10

Story

You are part of an elite military unit set out to stop specific terrorists acts. The face this game has to confidence to infuse terrorist acts into its plot alone stood good with me as that isn’t a topic every developer will have the brave points to tackle. Now there are story ties to the first RSV which I can not attest to their importance as I was not familiar with it. So with this game being judged entirely on its own weight, I would say its solid but truly not that memorable. The dialogue is filled mainly with military lingo along with some basic group banter but nothing that is going to be marked amongst the best stories ever told.

6/10

Gameplay

I whole heartily declare that this is the most intelligent shooter I have played this entire generation. Instead of going with the run n gun style of most fps’s or falling victim to cover spamming like most tps’s, this game truly puts you in the mindset of a realistic firefight. You need to carefully sweep and clear rooms to avoid being flanked or shot from behind. You need to constantly be aware of your surroundings as enemies can come from different points of entry at any time. The powerful in depth realism of these notions makes this game a wondrously refreshing shooter in a sea of clones. You can take cover and peek out to take a well times shot (having to keep in mind some light cover can be penetrated) or use varying explosives for a multitude of tactics (such as door breaching or distractions). In terms of weapon variety, you start off with a basic selection but can earn many more as you kill enemies in either close quarters, long range, or with explosives. Also, the weapons (and your armor/gear) are customizable, which add a lot of options to fit your personal play style. In addition, the varying weapons truly do play out differently so a sniper feels like a sniper should (with long reloads but devastating power) and a shotgun works as you’d expect that too as well (short range destruction).
Toss in an awesome terrorist mode (where you can have varying sized firefights with up to 4 allies) and a solid on line mode (basic game types available such as death match, etc) all add up to a dynamic and unique experience. The ONLY sour note here (which is not too bad in the grand scheme) is that the difficulty levels don’t seem to make a difference as virtually every shot is a one or two hit kill anyways, so when I did a casual and realistic run of the campaign, I noticed little to no difference in difficulty.

10/10

Overall

If you have been bored with the average shooter, run to your local store and pick this game up. Brilliant environments, tactical game play, loads of weapons to be tinkered to fit your personal play style with lots of awesome firefights to be had. No reason to pass up this genius title.

8/10

Recommendation: Purchase

Every few weeks I get a weekend off and drive across the bridge to Hal’s. Hal lives with a ’slave’, a real-life woman who obeys him. Mostly. But this post won’t be about their absurd relationship. I’m a firm believer in the main point of Geroge Orwell’s essay, “Shooting an Elephant”, which is. when one party assumes the role of tyrant, it’s their own freedom they destroy.

Sorry to get you interested in what I won’t be talking about for the rest of this post, but here’s a little bit more: Hal’s slave is far younger than he, with great snowy skin, but she’s fat in a not-hot way, despite the large rack. Also, though Hal knows her moods, I find her unsmiling obedient presence dour; I’d like to show her the door when I’m over there.

Hal has one of those ginormous big flat fucking televisions and all we do 90% of the time is play Xbox360. I find myself totally absorbed in the games, especially on the huge screen.

For the third time in as many weekends we tried to get the cheat of “Unlimited health” for Metropolis in the terrible Superman Returns game, but it never works. I really wanted to love the game, but it just sucks. I bought it for $9.99 at a Gamestop where the girl clerk said she should pay us $5 just to take it away.

After Superman, we played the demo download of the new X-Men Origins: Wolverine game. This was the highlight of the day. While the game has some flaws (everyone has their nitpicks) Wolverine the character is damned-near indestructable, just like in the film. But the game is so much gorier than the movie and Wolvy so brutal, I actually felt bad for some of the African mercenaries, literally diced into salsa like tomatoes in a blender. Nerdgasms will ensue.

Hal and I played the new UFC game demo. It was realistic and fun, and I say this not as a UFC fan. I like fighting and fights, strategy and sportsmanship, but UFC is a sport, not combat, and after awhile the ground stuff begins to look gay, even when one guy is ground and pound-ing the shit out of the other’s face. I found myself getting angrier and angrier at losing quickly. Just like in the real UFC, being hit at the correct angle drops your guy like a bag of dirt. I was cursing up a storm even when I won.

I played Ninja Gaiden II on the sissy setting. Excellent graphics but very tedious.

After a long, LONG day and night, eating the shit out of everything in sight (pizza, cheese sticks, ribs) and with my eyes feeling like scoops of napalm jelly, Hal and I fired up Rainbow Six Vegas 2, an excellent game with a dizzying shitload of options. Hal and I played split screen matches where we hunted 35 terrorists in various settings. We both ended up infuriated with each other for our incompetence and lack of communication, and were shouting and cursing and getting more and more pissed off. It was both hilarious and very depressing to be killed so many times, I wondered if these games make anyone think twice about going to war. Thanks to practicing meditation, between rounds I did have moments of absolute calm where I would laugh at the intensity of my rage. When I felt anger, frustration and hatred it was VERY real, yet a few times I could close it all off like a spigot. Negative emotions literally eat your strength away, but don’t tell it to Hal, who admires the Sith.

That was how I spent my last Saturday off. It will be three weeks before I get another one. We need some new games.

Just read a tip-off from Joystiq that GameStop is having a “buy two, get one free” deal on used games and accessories. The code is “BUY2GET1″. What’s nice is that you can buy them online, and there’s a code for free shipping: “SAVER”.

I just bought Mirror’s Edge, Far Cry 2, and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 for $60 total. Not bad, considering that’s how much I would have paid for EACH of them when they first came out.

Played a few game of Halo with the old faithful cousin on guest, mixed bag of results. First game was great, CTF on Sandtrap, 2 flag scores and 25 kills, could not have gone better. After that i thought we were set up for a solid few hours of Halo related fun, until we played Valhalla and got paired with 3 team killers. A bunch of betrayals and 3 bootings later we got beat. No surprise really.

Next game saw us on One bomb on Avalanche which is my favourite map. I had good feelings about this one. Did not score the first round but i managed to lead an awesome defence which saw us hold them off until my team mate decided to move the hog that was blocking the teleporter…thanks. They scored with about 4 seconds left. Safe to say we got beat thanks to weak teammates, cant win them all though.

So after that 2 game bad run my cousin pulled out Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 which he picked up in town. Being an avid fan of Black Arrow and the first Vegas game i fired it up for some split screen action. First annoyance, vertical screen splitting, for the life of me I could not find the option to change this. Can you? Please help me, I prey I’m being stupid. After I got used to this we proceeded through the first two missions.

First mission was the usual skulk around save some hostages and kill some bad guys. In fact so was the second mission. And I presume so was the next 7 missions. I’m not saying its not fun its just not new. I felt like I was still playing the first game, the 2nd level saw me in a casino which i swear was in the first game. Total Dejavu! I mean the games ok but why would anyone spend 40 quid on it, I’m shocked that they actually released this as a game, it should have been DLC. Bad developers!

Anyway, hopefully have some more positive reviews soon. Just wait until I review skate

This might seem very tactical, but sometimes your teammates are just douchebags

Eighteen months after the first Rainbow Six Vegas was released, the new installment in the series came and brought many new features, but some issues like the frustrating moments with the AI teammates remained the same. This is gonna be a quick review about some new fatures like the new weapons, and one of the main changs like the ACES (Advanced Combat Enhancement and Specialization). This new attribute allows you to get poins by killing terrorists in many different ways as shown below:

Close Quarters: obtained by doing close-range kills and using your smoke and flashbang.

Assault: anything such as muliple kills and using your c4 and frag grenade will get you assault points.

Marksmanship: Obtain points by doing headshots (my personal favorite) and long-range kills.

The more points you get, the more related weapons and gear to each that you will unlock. Each level can go up to a maximum of 20. Also by simply killing you get exp points which go down into the new exp bar at the bottom of the screen. Each time you level up, you will unlock a new set of gear and some weapons.

Talking about weapons, they have added 11 new guns and new armor sets for you to fullfill your terroris-killing needs. Here is a video of some of the new weapons in RSV 2:

One of the things I liked is that now anything you unlock in the single player campaign can be used in multiplayer and vice versa, which in the previous game was an annoying thing. Also a player can jump into action at any time for the co-op campaign. The first player called Bishop will control the two AI teammates, and the second player, called Knight will act like a regular unit. Now you can play with four teammates and achieve a whole new tactical level.

Multiplayer has not changed much except for the part that the matchmaking system was greatly improved, also adding new modes like demolition, which is basically a counter strike-like-plant-the-bomb mission.

As you may know, I’m a petty and jealous person. That being said, I can’t allow Mike and JPark to write about 2008 without throwing in my two cents. And, as much as I have been avoiding the wrap-up/review type post (since we have all been bogged down with them for the past month) I thought it would be prudent to touch upon the top Co-Op online games I’ve enjoyed over the past year. Keep in mind that this list excludes MMORPGs.

Gears of War 2

I have two words for you: Horde Mode. Strap up your chainsaws with one to four of your best gamer buddies and get ready for onslaught after onslaught of alien baddies. Use strategy, cover for each other, and don’t get caught in the middle. And remember, aim for the tanks and you can take care of that flame thrower pretty damn quickly. Granted, you can obviously play the Campaign mode, but after you do it once, Horde is where its at.

To see the rest of my favorite co-op games, well, you know what to do…

Left 4 Dead

Left 4 Dead is slowly becoming my favorite game to pop in for 30 minutes or so. I know I’ve covered this before, but the team strategies involved in this sweet horror/action title are pretty in depth. Yeah the obvious stuff is, well, obvious: Crouch with a shotgun, teammate with an assault rifle behind you; You take out the close range stuff while your buddy with the A/R mows down the zombies from afar. And you better watch your friend’s back, since Jack Shepard and the creators all tell you the same thing: Live Together, Die Alone.

But what about when you are playing as the infected? Play the boomer foolishly and the suvivors will run all over your team, making it to the next saferoom and leaving your smoker friend to cry in the corner. (Not to be confused with the Witch, let her cry, trust me.) But sneak up on a lone survivor with the hunter and its lights out Zoey…

FIFA 09 Be a Pro/Club Mode

This is one of the more underrated improvements to the Fifa franchise. Initially tested out a few months after launching Fifa 08, the 09 interation of Be a Pro mode allows you to go online with up to 9 friends and field a full team for any match. Can’t shoot but have a knack for playing the long ball over the defense? Try playing as a midfielder. Cool finisher in the box but tackling aint your thing? Be a striker and claim all the glory.

Play in the club mode, and they will track your performance and give you a rating, much like they do for real life players. Combine this with the twist that all players have the same rating, thus defeating the advantage that Manchester United always has, and you have some of the most fun, addicting, and balanced co-op play around.

Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 Terrorist Hunt

Now I will admit I have only logged about 5-10 hours of this mode myself, but, much like the horde mode in Gears 2, Terrorist hunt pits the online players against a collection of AI terrorists. Luckily, AI has come a long way from the first Rainbow Six (anyone remember the original for PC, with the last level in the BioDome-esque building?) The AI is smart, and this also requires a fairly advanced level of tactics and intelligence. In fact, I think I am going to have to get my hands on this to give it another whirl.

So that’s my top Co-Op games of 2008. Are we missing any? Am I an idiot? Do you think you can score on me in Fifa? Leave comments or forever hold your peace.

PS: I realize that there is no mention of Rock Band/Guitar Hero in here. Despite their obvious cooperative nature, I didn’t want to include them, since I’ve never played any of them online and probably never will.

When I lived with my previous flat-mate, many hours were spent with Xbox 360 controllers in our hand

When I lived with my previous flat-mate, many hours were spent with Xbox 360 controllers in our hands huddled over our TV hunting terrorists together in Rainbow Six: Vegas. The result was usually one of us being killed seconds into the mission and the other saying ‘Right, let’s do it properly this time’, even though the phrase had already been said eight times that night anyway.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 arrived today from LoveFilm, and it’s almost exactly the same as it’s predecessor. A bad thing? Yes and no. Yes because it retails for the same price as any other Xbox 360 game, so it doesn’t seem totally fair that a lot of it is a re-hash of the first game. Sound effects, music, weapons and a few other things are all used from the original, and are apparently justified because the story takes place on the same timeline as the first game, so it has to be the same for continuity’s sake.

Yeah it's the same game, but who cares when there's a sustained terrorist threat and huge explosions? (Image from GiantBomb.com)

The original Rainbow Six: Vegas was awesome though. It combined stealth with the perfect amount of full-on action, and the story was well constructed. So taking a lot from it’s big brother means Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 is a very good game. There’s a few new tweaks here and there, such as the ability to change armour and weaponry at certain stages in a mission as well as a new experience points system, but it transfers the same tight gameplay and tense narrative that made the original so impressive.

After playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I thought most shooters I played after it would feel stale and run of the mill in comparison, but my heart holds a soft spot for Ubisoft’s second installment of the Vegas series, even if it probably should be called ‘Rainbow Six: Vegas 1.5′ instead.
