“Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayi” (1971) was a musical blockbuster where every song from the movie was extremely popular. In fact these songs remain popular to this day.

I have posted two songs from this movie already. Here is the third song. This song is in fact the theme song cum title song, as the title of the movie figures in the lyrics of this song.

Rafi is the singer and he has sung this song with gusto. He puts in amazing amount in energy and enthusiasm in the song which can be readily felt by the listener even today.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music.

The song is picturised on Rajendra Kumar and Sadhana. These two icons of 1960s sadly fail to match the energy and enthusiasm of Rafi. Both look over the hill. I never thought that I would have to make such an observation about these two who were the icons of 1960s. But then time and tide waits for no one. This song, and this movie indeed turned out to be one of their last appearances as lead actors in Bollywood.

Of course, one does not need to watch thevideo to savour the song. Its audio is enough. And in fact that is how I , and most of the music lovers have enjoyed this song all these days. and this song is a perfect example of Rafi at his energetic best. It is a gem of a song indeed.

Just now I stumbled upon a 50 year old song, and listened to it for the first time.

This song is from “Maa Baap” (1959). It is sung by Rafi (and chorus) and picturised on Rajendra Kumar (and others). The lyrics by Rajinder Krishan are interesting. It talks of one’s hand as being one’s trusted companion. Chitragpta is the music director.

I was neither aware of this song no this movie. But now I have realised that this movie had some interesting songs. So it follows that I need to post more songs from this movie in the days to come.

“Akeli Mat Jaiyyo” (1963) was one of those movies that failed at the box office despite boasting of names like Rajendra “Jubilee” Kumar and Meena Kumari. Madan Mohan yet again had the mortification of watching his music go down the drain because his songs from this movie failed to take off as a result of the failure of this movie.

Here is a lovely song from this movie which I heard for the first time only just now- more than 36 years after this song must have been created. It is a lovely song written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and sung by Rafi and Lata. This song is picturised as a roimantic song on Rajendra Kumar and Meena Kumari.

This song is one of the forgotten gems that deserve to be better known.

“Dharti” (1970) was one of the last movies in which both Rajendra Kumar and Waheeda Rehman were seen in lead roles. By this time both had begun to show their ages and were soon upstaged by younger and fresher faces.

This song is a song where Waheeda Rehman, while sleeping in her cot, imagines herself to be globe trotting with Rajendra Kumar to exotic locations, like a honeymooning couple.

Rafi and Lata sing this duet which is written by Rajinder Krishan. Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

In Bollywood movie songs, it the the boy who wooes the girl and the girl takes exception. But what happens when it is the other way round ? When the girl starts wooing the boy, then the latter is very uncomfortable. And that was much more so half a century ago.

Here in this song, Minoo Mumtaz comes on hard at Rajendra Kumar. The lyrics of this song , written by Prem Dhawan are quite seductive, and it is made even more so by the voice of Asha Bhonsle. This song has to be one of the more seductive songs seen in a Bollywood movie.

Mukesh singing for Rajendra Kumar is not as common as Rafi singing for him. However, “Sasural” was one movie where Mukesh had given playback for Rajendra Kumar.

Rajendra Kumar, known for copying Dilip Kumar’s mannerisms, was known as Jubilee Kumar, because almost all his movies tended to be jubilee hits. Those days,movies completing 25 weeks were called silver jubilee hits and movies completing 50 weeks were called golden jubilee hits. Almost every Rajendra Kumar movie was a jubilee hit.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight, I feel that much of the success of Rajendra Kumar movies was because of the music. What great music and music directors we had those days ! And the music of Rajendra Kumar movies tended to be amazingly popular. Songs of Rajendra Kumar movies, viz “Sasuraal”, “Aarzoo”, “Suraj” etc were amazingly popular. I do not think there is much content left in these movies if one takes these songs out of these movies.

In most of these movies, it was Rafi who tended to be the singer for Rajendra Kumar, typically under the music direction of Shankar Jaikishan.

Here in this song, it is rather different. Here Mukesh sings for Rajendra Kumar and Dattaram is the music director. Pradeep is the lyricist.

“Suraj” (1966) starring Rajendra Kumar and Vyjyantimala was the biggest music blockbuster of the year. I have posted a few songs from this movie already.

Here is another song from this movie. It is a duet sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Hasrat Jaipuri wrote the song and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music. It is a roadside tamasha song where people gather in a circle and watch the performers performing in the centre.

In bollywood, we have “teasing” songs where hero is seen teasing the heroine rather roughly against her wishes and getting away with it. In real life India, such a conduct is considered highly objectionable and rightly so, since it is clearly sexual harassment. In fact, a uniquely Indian term called “eve teasing” has come into existence in India, much to the amusement of non Indian observers. And such “eve teasing” is punishable under Indian Penal Code, articles 298 (A) and (B).

Though Bollywood movies talk a lot about article 302 of IPC (murder), and older movies had some person wrongly prosecuted under this article, I wonder why no Bollywood hero was ever prosecuted under section 298 of IPC. For evidence against the hero, one could show the “eve teasing” song that the hero was so blatantly shown singing in movies.

How I would love to see Rajendra Kumar, of all the eve teasing heroes, to be hauled up for “eve teasing”. I have seen him indulging in such conduct in many songs. Here is one such song from “Anjaana” (1969). The song is sung by Rafi, lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and music direction is by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The eve teasing by Rajendra Kumar is quite rough in nature.Babita rightly takes exception against that for much of the song. And I believe that expecting the girl to enjoy such obnoxious conduct is wrong.

And therefore I am not really unhappy to know that Rajendra Kumar ( the notorious eve teaser in my books) was soon shown the door by the public. Even the great music of the movie, which used to bail hiom out in his earlier movies, could not help him this time.

Give me Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz any day, where the teasing is gentle and both seem to enjoy it along with the audience.

This song itself is wonderful and one can enjoy it without needing to watch the picturisation. Rafi, Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant Pyarelal have come up with a wonderful song here.

I have listened to this song many a times, and I liked this song, but all these days I had no idea which movie this song was from.

It comes as a surprise to me to know that this song is from “Geet” (1970). This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Lata and picturised on Rajendra Kumar and Mala Sinha. Considering that the title song of this song is sung by Rafi and picturised on Rajendra Kumar, I had no clue that Mahendra Kapoor too had sung for Rajendra Kumar in this movie.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Kalyanji Anandji composed the music for this song.

This song was a long pending farmaish since last october. I was unable to comply with this farmaish for the simple reason that I had no clue about this song. In fact, I was not aware about this 1975 movie called “Sunahra Sansaar”.

Now, I have been able to locate the video of this rare song from this obscure movie. I find that this movie had Rajendra Kumar ( then past his prime) and Hema Malini ( then in her prime). Rajendra Kumar was no longer a jubilee Kumar and this movie is one of the most obscure movies that Rajendra Kumar ever appeared in.

Like Rajendra Kumar, Naushad, the music director of this movie, had also left his best days behind. The choice of audiences had undergone a sea change and all the efforts of Naushad to make comebacks did not succeed . The music given by Naushad was quite good, but the songs of this movie did not become too popular. At least I was not aware of the songs of this movie.

This song was written by Anand Bakshi, and he, like Hema Malini was in the peak of his prowess.

“Aas Ka Panchchi” (1961) may have been forgotten by now, but when I listen to the songs of this movie, I am quite impressed.

this movie has memorable songs sung by different singers. earlier, I had posted a song ( Dil mera ek aas ka panchchi) sung by Subir Sen. Here is another memorable song from this movie. This song ” ae mere pyaar ki manzil” is sung by Mukesh and picturised on Rajendra Kumar.

It is a piano cum party song, where Rajendra Kumar sits on a piano and sings this song.

Shailendra wrote this song and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

This is one song I remember listeneing to in my younger days. This was just the kind of song that kids would enjoy lisytening to. And like many such songs of those days, I had no details available about the song.

Now, I have managed to collect those details, and that has taken me just four decades ! And I must say I was surprised to know who the music director was. It was not Shankar Jaikishan or Laxmikant Pyarelal or Sonik Omi, but this youthful tune was composed by one of the seniormost music directors on the scene viz Naushad !

Picturisation of this song shows Rajendra Kumar teasing Vyjyantimala. Rajinder Krishan, the veteran lyricist had written this song.

It is indeed interesting to note that such veterans were involved in creating this youthful song.

Incidentally, this movie was the last that one saw of Rajendra Kumar and Vyjyantimala as lead actors. Rajendra Kumar continued to act in lesser roles, but this movie was the last Bollywood movie in which Vyjyantmala appeared.
