A local Rakı producer company declared the existence of World Rakı Day in 2006 and since then more and more Turks (and certainly Kurds) are happily joining ranks to celebrate Rakı drinking. The exact day changes one or two days since then – since this tradition is still being invented- but this year collectively decided: 13 December. For outsiders, Rakı is very similar to Greek drink, Ouzo.

Rakı drinking is definitely a social activity and Rakı cannot be though without a rich existence of meze… A few days ago it was patented as a Turkish product (!)

Back from the long weekend- the Islamic Kurban holiday coincided with Thanksgiving this year, so I got to have two holidays in one week. I helped cook a full Thanksgiving dinner for 75 on Tuesday (we started planning Monday…) and then left Wednesday to spend the rest of the holidays with one of my Turkish friends, Candan. I can’t say enough about what incredible hosts she and her parents were. We visited friends and family, ate an enormous amount (think of Thanksgiving and then multiply by 4 days), supported the Turkish economy with a day-long shopping trip, listened to a lot of Turkish and succeeded in speaking a little too, created quite the scandal at the family wedding, played with some babies, and learned a whole lot about this crazy wonderful country. Soooo many stories to tell, but I’ll go ahead and post some pictures until I more time.

I made the pie dough and filling for two apple pies and then we moved to the school’s industrial kitchen to use their ovens. As I started rolling the dough out, the pastry chef came over, seized the rolling pin, and created a masterpiece that I could in no way take credit for. After much stress, chaos, some desperate skype calls home and with a lot of help from the kitchen staff, we (the exchange students) pulled a pretty great dinner – miracles of all miracles we had enough food, ate only 30 min late, and no one got food poisoning.

One of the many huge meals we ate this weekend (this in particular was breakfast). Absolutely delicious!

Celebrating the holiday with Candan and her parents- take one swig of Raki (a kind of licorice/anise vodka-ish drink) and chase it with a swig of fermented purple carrot juice- sounds like something out of Harry Potter, but I won’t lie, it’s pretty good.

Raki est un jeune garçon qui a vu récemment mourir ses parents des mains d’un Yoma. Ces êtres démoniaques se font passer comme les prédateurs des humains. En raison de leurs capacités à prendre l’apparence de n’importe quel humain ainsi que leur mémoire et leur comportement, il est impossible pour une personne normale de les distinguer. Le seul moyen connu pour éradiquer la menace des Yomas est de demander l’aide d’un mystérieux groupe : les Claymores. Ceux qui le constituent sont toutes des femmes mi-humaines mi-Yomas vivant en marge de la société car craintes des humains en raison de leur origine et de leur apparence. En effet, un des détails qui les caractérise sont leurs yeux argentés qui changent de couleur lorsqu’elles combattent un Yoma.  Afin d’éliminer le Yoma qui se trouve dans le village de Raki, le chef de celui-ci fait alors appel à cette organisation. C’est ainsi que le jeune orphelin fera la connaissance de Claire, une Claymore qu’il suivra dans ses missions ce qui lui permettra de voir si les Claymores sont aussi inhumaines qu’on le prétend.

Cet article ne sera pas une critique mais plutôt une sorte de mise au point intermédiaire.

Comme ce n’est pas une critique, pas la peine de faire de préambule: Claymore c’est de la dynamite. Autant l’anime est à bien des égards décevant (pour ne pas dire nul car ne suit pas tellement l’histoire du manga), autant le manga envoie du lourd.

16 tomes sont sortis en France et je peux dire que, non seulement la série ne s’essouffle pas mais qu’en plus, on arrête d’avoir des rebondissements qui permettent de relancer constamment une machine déjà bien huilé. Je n’avais pas eu autant de plaisir à commencer un manga depuis Berserk. Non, la comparaison n’est pas si bête car les deux mangas ont des points communs. Certes, Claymore ne brille pas par son dessin mais son histoire ne laissera personne indifférent.

Pourtant, les premiers tomes m’avaient laissé perplexe mais dépassé le 4, l’histoire se met en marche et n’est pas prête de s’arrêter. Et je peux dire que les derniers chapitres annoncent du gros et du bon.

Bref, si vous n’avez toujours pas compris où je voulais en venir, je vais être plus clair: lancez-vous. Si vous aimez les shonens qui évolue dans le bon sens ou les mangas à la Berserk, c’est du garanti.

Visiting Greece and its wonderful islands was something we wanted to do but its food was no lesser than its sights… Towering over the city of Athens is The Acropolis and hidden in a street corner, we had wonderfully grilled pork chops at a taverna called Telis, at the corner of Epikourou and Evripidou street. As with all Greek grill places, the pieces of meat were grilled to perfection over hot charcoal, remaining succulent and juicy with a nice hint of the coal accompanied with a load of fries. We also ordered a plate of greek salad, where for the 1st time, we were greeted with a generous slab of feta cheese served on top of the salad, drizzled with olive oil and a good sprinkling of herbs. Together we washed it all down with a carafe of house wine. Not to be missed if you are in Athens…

If you like coffee, give the Frappe a go, this is the favourite of the greeks apart from greek coffee. Here, the Nescafe is blended with water till foamy then ice added to make it a cold and refreshing drink. Be warned, the greeks have theirs with lots of sugar. This is a cheaper and good alternative to an espresso or cappuccino.

While making your way to Plaka, stop by Thanasis Restaurant for a hearty serving of Kebabs or Souvlaki. This establishment is a local icon located along Mitropoleos Street at the end closes to Monastiraki station. The chicken souvlaki is grilled to perfection, juicy and well seasoned served with an abundant of fries.

If you like kebabs, try the beef kebabs, its done like an indian shish kebab, minced beef around a skewer and grilled over charcoal.

Order the full portion if you are a big eater, 4 kebabs together with fries and pita, its sure to fill you up… Order some Tzatziki or spicy cheese dip to go with your meal.

While enjoying the sights and shopping around Plaka, make a beeline for a taverna called Peristeri, on Patroou street.

For a first timer like me in Greece, the friendly owner made me feel at ease and the food was good too. As with most taverna, you can choose the dishes from a display inside the shop. We had pork in red wine sauce and potatoes, grilled whole bream, roasted eggplants and a basket of bread that was welcome, we used it to soak up the gravy from the pork dish.

A bottle of super cold coke each rounded up the meal. Good local home-style cooked food.

Another good place to eat is Thespidos, to locate this place, walk along Kydathenaon street past Adrianou and climb the steps, its on your right side, at a quiet location that you forget you are actually in the city. Sit outside next to the ruins of ancient Athens, close to the Acropolis. The fried cod fish was suggested by the owner and it was wonderful. Fried to golden with the just the right amount of seasoning. The sausages were good too, slightly spicy with herb seasoning. The owner was surprisingly friendly and stood by the table to chat while we were there.
If snacking or having a pie is something for you, head on to this pie place called Ariston, close to Voulis street.

The range of pies available here is astounding and you will see the locals queuing to get their share. The filling was substantial and moisture just right that will not make the skin soggy. The pastry is wonderfully light and not oily too.

As tourist, you’ll be spending most of your time in and around Plaka, Monastiraki and along Athinas street to Omonia Square. Tavernas are scattered all over and in the area of Psiri, where it’s up and coming, you’ll find Platia Iroon. A cosy place that serves nice grilled octopus, the tentacle is very tender and comes served with a salad.

Try the moussaka, where layer of lamb though too much for me is layered high just like the italian lasagna. The lamb pot is good and is well complemented with the boiled vegetables where its cooked till soft and a little soggy.

Try the Rakimilo, which is hot raki with honey. Nice drink for a cold autumn night.
To me, a must visit if you like lamb chops is a place called Taverna Tou Psiri, it’s packed nearly every night with people going for the lamb chops and like any taverna, check out the dishes on display inside. The eggplants and salad are really good too. The lamb chops were so good, we had 2 servings and all washed down with a carafe of red wine. We were even offered fruits after our meal… Bonus.

Hiçbir şey yapmamayı özlemişim..Uzun zamandan sonra ilk kez bir yere yetişmek kaygısıyla zamanı kollamadım, telefonumdan 3 saatte bir fırlayan gereksiz ‘hatırlatmalar’a maruz kalmadım ve trafikte 2 saat saplanmadım..

Saatlerce gazete-çay yetmedi; yarım kalan kitabıma gömüldüm..İyot fakiri bünyeme kıyak yapıp sahilde yürüyüşe çıktım; deniz kokusunu bol bol içime çektim, oltalarını geriye ok gibi savuran balıkçıların iğnesine takılma pahasına denizin tam dibinden yürüyerek, kıyıya vuran kocaman deniz analarını izledim..

Tam bu sırada; deniz kenarına şahane ve bir o kadar da iptidai; ufacık tefecik rakı masası kurmuş olan Aydın Boysanvari amcalara doğru ‘işte huzurun resmi budur‘ diyerek yanaştım ve sağ elimdeki telefonu kaldırıp dedim ki : ‘Resminizi çekebilir miyim ?’

Bu naif teklifimin sebebi resmi buraya koymak ve hakkında bir iki kelam etmekti.. Yanılmışım. Amcalardan biri; o tonton ve ‘rakı masasında bilgece tatlı tatlı anılar anlatan güngörmüş ihtiyar’ düsturundan uzaklaşıp parmağını bana doğru salladı ve “Hayır, Hayır çekmeyin” diye bağırdı.. Gülsem mi bozulsam mı bilemediğimden ikisini de yapamadım ve sadece şaşırdım..

“Çekiyorsunuz resimleri ondan sonra televizyonda izliyoruz görüntüleri” diye söylenmeye devam ederken; yanındaki nispeten biraz daha genç ve sakin olan “Yanlış anlamayın sizle ilgisi yok” dedi.. Elimdeki telefonu gösterip “Bununla mı televizyona göndereceğim resminizi” diyebildim sadece ve ‘öyle olsun’ der gibi bir jestle yanlarından uzaklaştım..

Hani filmlerde başrolün kafası bir şeylere kızdığında; hayatın yükünden bunaldığında gittiği ve dertleştiği balıkçılar olur ya; rakıları koyup sandalların-ağların arasında inceden müzik eşliğinde meşk ederler..İşte öyle bir görüntü hayal edin:)

Ieri i greci festeggiavano il giorno del no di quando cioè Mussolini  si provò di fare il ganzo coi greci: “Forza mangiafeta, fateci passare che dobbiam far la guerra noi!” ma i greci alzarono il dito medio: “Fottettevi fasci”.
“Ah sì?” fece allora Mussolini mettendo su un collo a tacchino ” e noi vi spezziamo le reni!”. Poi si sa come finiron le cose e insomma fine spieghino.

Dunque ieri era una festa non proprio contro gli italiani ma insomma, contro quelli fascisti un po’ sì. Così mentre noi italiani comunisti, che invece potevamo circolare, facevamo i turisti ad Atene ed i greci ficcavano la bandiera nel portabandiera (qui tutti i balconi ce l’hanno di serie) alcuni anarchici entravano nella stazione di Polizia  col kalashnikov.

Ma insomma. Entriamo ora nel vivo di questo post. Alcolismo ad Atene. I posti che dirò son ganzi assai che conosci solo se stai con  un ateniese ganzo  anch’esso altrimenti finisci a moijto&Shakira no grazie.

1. Nel quartiere Thisio, via Amifktionos incrocio con via Akamantos (fotina 1)  c’è un cafeneio-bar con la porta azzurrina che sembra una casa privata, non ha insegna e nemmeno un nome ma che è ganzo assai anche perchè è segreto, solo gli ateniesi e non tutti lo conoscono. Rakì fantastica. Rakomelo per freddolosi.

2. Scendete verso il quartiere di Plaka e cercate il Kapnikarea (fotina 2), via Mitropoleos con via Ermou,  fanno musica rembetica dal vivo, bevete rakomelo che ha il miele e disinfetta.

3. Proseguite nel quartiere di Psirrì, andate  a farvi una rakì al mercato coperto (fotina 3), anche il rakì fa bene, il mio amico Juan una volta l’ha usato per togliere lo smalto dalle unghie, figuratevi che miracoli come digestivo.

4. Andate ora nel quartiere  Stathmos Larisis e cercate il cafeneio Ghi, via Alkamenous (fotina 4). Rakì, Tsipouro, Rakomelo o birra fate voi.

5. A questo punto se avete bevuto secondo indicazioni avrete una fame spaventosa. Salite allora verso il quartiere degli anarchici e dei perduti, Exarcheia (i socialisti appena saliti al governo hanno adottato la politica maltratta l’anarchico, rastrella e punisci, così tanto per mettere subito in chiaro che anche se non sono di destra non son mica dei mollaccioni). Cercate via Mezonis 43  ed andate all’Avlì (sono così commossa che metto pure il telefono tel.2103838167 – fotina 5).

6. Per il dopocena se volete calarvi nell’atmosfera di Exarcheia già che siete lì andate a Karilaou Trikoupi, c’è un parco autogestito (fotina 6  ma ‘un si vede una sega) per il bivacco libero (il comune ci voleva fare un parchegggio, i punk greci allora son corsi ad occuparlo, ci han piantato alberi e messo scivoli per bambini).

Il giorno seguente non ne potrete più di questi maledetti fricchettoni e di fare quelli che ci han pudore a fare  cose da turisti. Andate a Licavittò  a vedere Atene dall’altro guardate quanto minchia è grande oh madonna sembra infinita eppoi ‘un c’è uno sputo di verde e quel poco che c’è se lo son fottuto i ricchi con le loro case con le piscine sui tetti (altre fotine) e allora poi avrete fatto tutto.

Se siete in auto e se ci avete culo, avranno occupato i caselli autostradali e qualcuno vi griderà dal casotto Vai amico vai vai! e non pagherete nulla.

Uzun zamandır, liberal ne demek diye düşünüp duruyor ama bir türlü araştırmıyordum. Tembelliğimden olsa gerek, Google’a yazmak baya bir zorlamış beni anlaşılan… Ama bugün öğrendim ne olduğunu, hatta biraz şaşırttı beni.

Ben “liberal” demenin ne demek olduğunu bilmez iken, onu aşırı solcu takımın kullandığını düşünürdüm ve bundan biraz negatif elektirik aldığımı itiraf ediyorum. Daha önce de dediğim gibi, aşırı uçtaki bir takım idealistik düşüncelerin esiri olmuş kişilerden pek haz etmediğimi söylemiştim. İşte bu nokta da anladım ki, liberallik de böyle bir şey.

Orucunu tutan, inançlı bir arkadaşımın kendisini çok liberal olarak ifade etmesi asıl beni araştırmaya itti. Çünkü beynim bunu kaldıramazdı “hem liberal hem muhafazakar?” pek mümkün gelmedi açıkçası bana. Dedim ben herhalde bu insanı yanlış tanımışım ki, ne pis biriymiş bu böyle ne olduğu belli değil dedim.

Aslında “liberal”, ansiklopedi anlamıyla “kişi özgürlükleri, düşünce özgürlüğü ve siyasi özgürlükler yanlısı kişi; başkalarına karşı hoşgörülü olan kimse, hoşgörüye dayanan tutum.” demek. Ayrıca ilginç olan bir şey var ki, Liberallik inanılmaz bir anlam kargaşı yaşamışrı. Bu kavramının Amerika’da solla özleşmesinin temel nedeni, sosyal demokrat bir partinin yaptığı bir takım hareketlere bu ismi takmasıdır. Ve muhafazakarlar bu liberallerden hiç hoşlanmazlar ve onlara liberal diyerek kötüleyici ve aşağılayıcı ithaflarda bulunurlar. Gelelim Türkiye’ye, biz de ise ilginç olan şu Liberaller sağcı kesim olarak değerlendiriliyormuş. Yani genellikle, sağ partiler ekonomik liberal politikalar uyguladıkları için, ülkemizdeki liberal aydınlar da sağdaki partilere destek veriyorlar. Solcular da bunlara liboş diyorlar ki; liberallik illa ki gay ya da muhafazakar sanılmanın nedeni diyebiliriz.

Sanırım bunun en iyi dengesi Avrupa da var, orada sağ sol karmaşasından çok, merkezde yer alma dengesidir Liberallik. Daha çok, ülkeyi muhafazarların halka karşı baskıcı ya da tutucu yaptırımlarından korumaya yönelik, sağ ve sol partilerle koalisyona giren ve ekonomik ve siyasi liberalizmin yaşandığı yer Avrupa’dır.

Özet bilgi: Liberallik;

Rakı içen AKP’li, Namaz kılan CHP’li, samimiyetin yapmacık görünmesi, özgürlük kavramına kendisi hapsetmiş kişi, gay, muhafazakar, ya da solcu.. Hiç aydınlatıcı değil mi? Nasıl bir kelimesin sen liberal, zamanında hep iyi adamlar için kullanılan sen, şimdi anaya küfretmekten beter bir kavram bile oluyorsun.

Oysa ki ben Liberalim.. o kadar öğrendiğim olumsuz bilgiye rağmen, anlamın çok güzel lan “Liberal”.

Liberalim, öyleyse muhafazakar gayim. Var mı?

Nicole and I in the Amari Valley

 As we left the main highways and wound our way up into the hills of the Rethymnon, Kostas spent his time educating us about the region, her people and of course, the food, always with a sparkle in his eye. He loved this land and it showed.  It was contagious.  Crete’s Amari Valley is gloriously fertile and  supplies food for Crete as well as many other areas of Greece. Coming up around a bend, we rose over the lush valley and i instinctively drew in a breath of delight as we looked for miles down into its green folds. I knew we were in for a fantastic day!

Today i will describe our experiences with bread, pastries and, well all things good and baked!

Breakfast of fresh cheese, honey, nuts and fruits

After a delicious breakfast in Panakron (more to come on this place!) consisting of local delights, we headed up into a tiny village where we stepped into the aromatic bliss of fresh baked goods. 
  
Outside our shop were buckets of tiny wild berries and inside were rows of cookies, pastries and fresh breads. YUM!

 This is where we met Maria, our baker. Being that the following day was the feast day for Mary, Maria was incredibly well organized and knew that after we left, she had a long day of baking ahead. Yet she never rushed us. She was enjoying us as we were enjoying her time.

 

 After bringing out a bubbling mass of batter in a large bowl, Maria added olive oil and flour and heated up a  pan of olive oil. Maria skillfully pick up a handful of the sticky goo, squeezed it through her fist and quickly spooned up a small a ball of dough to toss into the fat. I am pretty sure this could have been preformed in her sleep.

Perfect. My turn. Not as easy as it looked! she let everyone give it a try. 
 

After getting our fill of pastries and boxing up the rest for later, we headed to Thronos where we met Lambros, his lovely wife, their milk goats, fat pig, chickens, bunnies, dog..

who am i missing? Oh Mr Mentios the donkey! He apparently enjoys being taken for walks.

Lambros was the first entrepreneur in the area who understood the concept that if he builds it, they will come. His gorgeous facility houses rooms for rent, a taverna, a small store with local products and beautiful views in every direction. It was here that we attempted to milk a very patient goat, walked into the surrounding hills for a history lesson as well as an agriculture lesson and learned to bake bread in an oven heated slowly with olive wood.

After Lambros brought out a beautiful sourdough mother , we all got our hands in the dough and kneaded 3 huge bags of different  flours  with some olive oil and water. there was no such thing as too many cooks in this makeshift kitchen. I had flour in my hair, on my nose and on my feet?? this should not surprise those of you who know me

I wish i could post the smell in the air and the breeze that knocked my hat of numerous times. It was so beautiful up here.

After we had started the oven fire crackling and shaped our breads, we headed up in to the hills with our certified mountain guide Aris Koutakis. As we walked through the village to our trail head, Aris lectured us about breathing techniques while hiking in the mountains of Greece and how not to overheat.. I thought, where the hell are we going??? We were surrounded by huge mountains and i was wearing a skirt and sandals! Always the worrier, i of course had nothing to worry about. As we foundour way to the trail he passed us wild plums, walnuts, figs ,berries, carob, thyme, and oregano. He pointed out wild hemlock and up to the mountain where Zeus was raised, hidden from his father. He pointed down the valley where the willow trees touched the river that Zeus had bathed in and the huge olive trees where he had sated his lusty appetites. It struck me suddenly that we were in the heart of greek tradition and Pan still lived in the caves above us. I got goosebumps.

  

After a short beautiful hike, we came up on a plateau which contained the ruins of Ancient Syvritos where the first coins were cast. Unlike  other ruins, these were silent and empty of  people, just a goat or two. There were bits of pottery on the ground and no fences ommiting our curious feet. Aris sat us down on an ancient wall and passed out information about the site and a map of the area.  As the wind raised around us, I felt like part of this place in history. It was lovely.

Walking down the  precarious goat trails back to town, we passed an ancient church and gobbled up plums from the trees. Mr Mentios also received several pats on the bum.

By the time we returned  our breads were hot  out of the oven and ready to eat. They look beautiful and tasted even better!

So ends my journey with gluten in the Amari Valley. Next stop, the glorious world of CHEESE and SNAILS!

I’ve seen the anime version of Claymore, but this was the first I’ve read of the original manga by Norihiro Yagi. That said, this review focuses on just the manga version and specifically, the events of the first volume.

In the world of Claymore, humans are not at the top of the food chain. They are preyed upon (read: eaten by) monsters called Yoma, who are able to disguise themselves as humans.

In order to combat these predators, a mysterious, nameless organization created Yoma-human hybrids. Only women were able to successfully incorporate the Yoma powers given to them, and the humans call them “Claymores.” These not-quite-humans fight Yoma but also fight to avoid succumbing to the crazed Yoma blood running through their veins. This is the story of one Claymore named Clare, and the orphaned human boy who follows her.

The first volume of Claymore is mostly exposition and Raki’s backstory. The dialogue is quite clunky, because the characters have to explain the rules of the Claymore world to the audience. Despite this awkward start, the artwork and creative universe definitely make me want to keep reading.

(Hopefully I’ll be able to pick up subsequent volumes of this manga soon! I want to get past the parts that the anime covered. Now if only I had the disposable income to do so…)

Clare + Sword

That said, this volume has plenty of gruesome Yoma-slaying and kick-ass swordplay by Clare! It’s pretty awesome to see a waifish, bob-haired girl wielding a huge Claymore sword.   (Hint, they were called Claymores after the swords, just in case you didn’t get that.)  This is definitely Hot Chick with a Sword territory.

Those who don’t go for gore should probably stay away from this series, because Claymore is not for the faint of heart. In one scene, Clare takes on four Yoma all at once and promptly slaughters them. In another, she allows a Yoma to shove it’s sharp-clawed hand all the way through her own torso in order to lure it close enough to kill.

Heart-pounding action:  Check!

Character-wise, this volume falls a bit flat. Raki does manage to be less annoying and whiny on the page than he was on-screen, but he still seems pretty shallow as a character.

Clare is a pretty typical shonen-manga action hero, she embodies the strong and silent type.  (Emotionless Girl, maybe?)

The potential for her character’s development is there, however, as we are given very brief glimpses into her early childhood as a victim of a Yoma attack. Clare also hints at her experience of the excruciatingly painful transition from human to Claymore.

I really enjoyed the artwork in this volume, it struck me as being detailed without too much detail or distracting shades or screentones. The village scenes were excellent, in my view, and called to mind other manga set in a psuedo-Renaissance setting such as Berserk. (Except, you know, without the rape, torture, misogyny and violence-porn.)

I enjoyed how the artist set the village scenes without inserting too much detail into the landscape, as other manga artists do. Both Miura and Hirano do this, sometimes to the detriment of characters and story, in my opinion.

The best part about the artwork by far, however, was Clare’s eyes. On most of the panels in which she was featured, her eyes leaped off the page with an expressiveness that undercuts Clare’s otherwise stoic nature. The dramatic transformation from her human-looking eyes (which are silver-colored) to the golden, cat-like Yoma eyes immediately drew my own eyes.

Volume one ends on a somber note, with Clare mourning the loss of another Claymore who had been dear to her. The final words of the volume resonated with me, and neatly summed up the themes of this volume:

Raki: But why?  If it’s so painful, why do you fight the Yoma?

I’m greatly looking forward to reading subsequent volumes of Claymore. Though the story is familiar in these early volumes to anime viewers, I found the first volume well worth the read. I can’t wait to see more of Clare’s Yoma powers manifest themselves, and am interested to see how the manga depicts the other Claymores as well.

If you’re into shonen-style action with a kick-ass heroine and gruesome monster slaying, I’m sure you’ll enjoy Claymore – I did!

This blog post is long overdue but it has taken me this long to go through most of my 788 pictures and figure out how to present my trip here. Of course i begin with my favorite topic: FOOD! My first several days were spent on the magical island of Crete. I am pretty sure i could live there on my own little farm with my goat and chickens and olive trees. After milking the goats and preparing the day’s cheese, i could venture into town for my morning shot of Raki with a pastry and Greek lesson with the locals. Then work in the garden before the afternoon heat sent me down to the sea for a dip and a late lunch of stuffed vine leaves and fresh tomatoes. Sigh…a girl can have dreams right?

After Crete we spent 5 days in Santorini which were consumed with breath-taking views, hiking into volcanoes and wine tasting. There was also a great deal of shopping to do. Our trip ended in Athens; a gorgeous city merging the ancient with the modern and nestled around the Acropolis.  

Greece is a cornucopia of food bliss and ironically the originator of the cornucopia itself!  From my first day in Crete i was in awe of the fresh local produce available for consumption around every corner. Most people have heard about the Mediterranean diet and its amazing health benefits.  I had the pleasure of experiencing it first hand.

Everything you hear is true. The olives, capers, tomatoes, peppers, oil, melons and cheese are all bursting with flavor and color. Many of our meals were cooked at home after spending the morning in a local town picking up produce from local farmers in the market squares. Buying our food from the people who produced it, gave me the greatest sense of pleasure and glee.

In my humblest opinion, Crete was the greatest example of local food done well. There is a passion for the land by the people who live there and a strong desire to keep tradition and heritage intact. But i will detail that in another posting.

For now i present my plethora of  food images…why did i do this before lunch! i am starving now!

WELCOME TO SARAH’s FOODS OF CRETE!

my first meal after becoming coherent from a long travel day was in the harbor town of Chania on the northwest side of Crete. The town was lovely and this restaurant epitomizes the magic of wandering around on the back streets of town. If you ever make it to Crete check out Steki Taverna…the food was excellent!

 this was my first salad. the feta was soft, almost like a salty chevre and the capers were bursting with flavor!

 this was my FAVORITE thing ever! a slab of feta was wrapped in light crisp filo fried in olive oil, drizzled with thyme honey and sprinkled with sesame seeds. it was served hot and salty. SO GOOD

the following day we ventured into the village of Argyroupoli to sample their avocado products and see this town that is build on the side of a mountain and surrounded by waterfalls. so beautiful and about 20 degrees cooler! I could imagine what it was like there a thousand years ago…less tavernas but same water and trails and smiling faces i hope

 Our lovely Taverna owner was plucking fresh trout for lunch. As the meal progressed it became apparent that anyone could take a try with the net but the children had a real knack for it. these fish were fried and served whole with yogurt sauce, capers and lemon.

 we dined on the traditional Crete rusk bread (read really dry wheat rolls) covered in  fresh mashed tomatoes and fresh feta. we also had rice and herb stuffed zucchini blossoms. SO FRESH!

For dessert we had fresh melon kept cool in a local stream. i wish i had caught a shot of this melon, it was sooooo red and juicy and cold. the tavernas just throw half a cut melon on a plate, stick forks in it and place it in the center of the table…that is what i call good eats!

 note the fig tree growing out of the same stream bed. fig trees would grow out of the roof of your car if you let them! they were everywhere.

i opted not to go for the roasted lamb roasting over the open fires about 1 inch from the side of the road.  yup i know…big weenie.

on our way home we stopped in the town of  Georgioupolis to pick up dinner and cheap beach towels for 2e.

While in the grocery store, I was quite mesmerized with this little contraption! Why oh why do we not have these at every market in town? i have discovered another reason to live on Crete. Just grab a container and select your spigot of choice for local red, local white or local retsina….mmmm retsina. thank you thank you thank you for your Retsina wines. Who cant love wine that is made with the tears of wood nymphs?  huh, I wonder what is in the top barrel? i missed that one.

The markets in Iraklion were incredible. we were able to get all of our produce for dinner and breakfast for the next couple of days.

this woman in her typical black garb was my very favorite. if i had more time…I would have loved to meet her. She brought her own cart to the market. in her cart were fresh eggs, live snails, zucchini blossoms, figs, tomatoes, pears, garlic, oil and wine in recycled water bottles and a variety of herbs. When we came back later in the day, she had packed up and gone home. I hope because she had sold all of her items. I wanted her to take me home and teach me to cook!

that night, i made a ragout of eggplant, tomato, onion and oregano, fresh figs with a local semi hard sheep’s milk cheese and these bitty little pears that packed so much flavor i am still craving them, and a fresh Greek salad with feta…of course! 

 we dined on the patio of our villa as the cool evening breeze came in over the sea. it was pretty much perfect. we were also working our way through the vast quantities of local Cretan whites.

after an incredible “slow” day in the Amari Valley (which i will blog about extensively) i discovered that the wild vine growing near the pool with the 1 inch spikes was a wild caper plant!! i was so excited that i sat with it for a good long time poking and tasting and sniffing. it really did smell like caper berries!

in crete they eat the buds and the leaves. I have seen pickled caper berries in the states but i didnt see anyone eat one in Crete and after i opened it, i wasnt going to venture either.

 they are like tiny ripe watermelon. Can we eat them??

At this point i am taking a giant leap to the north and mycontinued quest for food in Santorini.

I discovered quickly that food is not the main focus of Santorini, it is a place for lovers and sun worshippers and shoppers. Although it was quite gorgeous, i only had 2 meals that stand out and one of them was simply because the view would have made a 4 star Michelin meal pale. So i will begin with what i loved best, the wine!

  The grapes on santorini grow close to the ground in small clumps to collect the morning dew from the sea and hold it safe through the hottest parts of the day.

we were lucky enough to tour a local winery called Gavala Vineyards. Gavalas has been producing wines here for 300 years!! lucky for us we were the only people there that day and were given a tasting of 5 delightful wines including a Vinsanto dessert wine that i brought home. I am very much looking forward to the occasion i get to enjoy this!

 they still use the old grape stomping vats to produce their wines which pour through the lower right tube into hte basin with a basket to capture the seeds and skins…which of course then become Raki! ohhh Raki…but that is a tale for another time

 this was my first great meal in Santorini; Pork Souvlaki with a roasted broccoli and cauliflower salad and lemons…everything had lemons. YUM!

I will leave off this wild food extravaganza with a gorgeous sunset over Thirasia Island and a pair of wineglasses full of local Santorini white. if i squint, i can almost pretend i am still there.
