Ralph Lauren just put up their winter collection online last week. Although it’s not something revolutionary, we’re in the Christmas mood and this is the closest we have in the fashion world right now. They have some surprisingly solid Christmas sweaters that will look good in places other than a tacky Christmas party. Ralph Lauren Polo, to be exact.

You cannot walk 500 meters without spotting at least three stores with the standard Ralph Lauren Polo boards in blue! Initially, I thought that the area next to our hotel had branded stores but then I could not find anything else, it was either Polo or the local art. Strange, I say. Later when a tout on the roadside asked whether we wished to rent a car, go jet skiing, or buy a Levi’s 501 in the same breath, I came to the conclusion that Bali has a big counterfeit products market to lure the tourists. But more I think about it, more perplexed I am. Unlike the fake Levi’s jeans or the fake Nike tees, Ralph Lauren Polo stores are proper shops, and on a closer look the apparel seemed authentic as well. However, why on earth will anyone open a store at every turn of an extremely curvy road?

But soon as we stepped out of Tanjung Benoa (where our hotel was), I realized that the Ralph Lauren phenomena is not limited to the village but is spread island-wide. Definitely, they are fakes, nevertheless my quandary remains why only Ralph Lauren? Although I did spot a D&G in Ubud, but that is one against thirty in two days. And this is one of those rare occasions when even a Google search refuses to help.

Soooo…  I trust you’ve all done your part for the economy… nay… the country, by rising at 3 A.M. and shuffling off to your local national chain to purchase oodles of brand name merchandise at low-low prices, yes? By now you should be comfortably standing in a line somewhere, behind that old lady paying for everything with a check that she hasn’t written out beforehand and that family of 24 (23 of them children) and that gaggle of gossipy gals getting goods one… by one… by one… am I right? Of course I am. And it goes without saying (except that, well, I’m saying it right now), that you’ll take that iPhone of yours, or that Blackberry of yours, or, for the more gadget-conscious, that Droid of yours, and pull up edhoncho.com to see what kind of knowledge I’m dropping today. I mean really, who wouldn’t? Look around, see all those other people looking at their phones with sly smiles on their faces? With a look that probably says, without bragging, “I’m better than everyone here”? Yeah, they’re here too.

And you picked a good day tune in… just like yesterday, and the day before that, and tomorrow, and the day after that. All good days to tune in… but especially today, cause it’s today. I’m in the moment people. Come join me.

So, on the topic of today, I would like to make a couple of proposals. First, it should be a national holiday. I mean, we beat around the bush with Christmas and Halloween and Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, pretending they’re about something other than super-consumerism, why not just have a day where we admit to ourselves “that’s right, you heard us, we have a holiday that’s solely about buying stuff”? I mean, this is America, right? Could there possibly be a more American holiday? And let’s be honest readers, we’re not the country that passively avoids international disdain. We’re just not that country. We’re the country that says “here’s what we’re doing. Don’t like it? Suck our giant balls.” Right? I mean, isn’t that just so us? And of course, before you know it, every country in the world will have their own version of Black Friday, because we’re the popular kid… everyone hates us, but they all want to be just like us.

Which brings me to my second point… why such a bleak name for such a wonderful day? I know, I know… “in the black”… I never said I didn’t understand it… of course I understand it… it’s just that, well, I think we can do better. I’ve conducted a brainstorming session with some of the brightest minds around (myself), and here are some suggestions:

• Consumption Day – Simple, understandable, and more to the point, to the point.
• Buy Something Day – OK, sure, this is a reaction, possibly childish, to Adbusters proposal to make today “Buy Nothing Day“. Are they trying to ruin our country?
• Recession Avoidance Day – Really, can we afford to roll the dice with the future of the world?
• Thanksgiving, the Sequel – Also thought about going with Thanksgiving II: Return of the California King. Really, who better to thank than the wonderful men and women that provide us with goods and services that we clearly can’t live without?
• Christmas – Let’s be honest. Today is the first day of Christmas. This would extend Christmas and make it more like Hannukah, except instead of eight days celebrating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, we’ve got 25-32 days celebrating shopping.

Surely, from amongst these pretty-much-transcendent ideas, we can come to a consensus on the new name for our wonderful holiday.

Now, what kind of adviser of men would I be if I didn’t offer some wonderful suggestions to you and yours on what to get your sports-loving loved one (or, you know, yourself)? Not a very good one, that’s for sure, and as you all know, those are words that simply aren’t used to describe yours truly (well, except “good”… oh, and “very good”… but not “not very good”… in conjunction with one another, all three, they aren’t associated with yours tru… oh, forget it, let’s just move on).

A replica, full-sized, of the video screen at Cowboys Stadium. Let’s be honest… hosting parties and get-togethers with today’s standard sized 205 inch televisions just isn’t cutting it. You can barely tell how many days facial-hair-growth Edwin van der Sar is working on, let alone make out DeShawn Stevenson’s neck tattoos. This is unacceptable, of course. Suggested hint drop: (while watching the Cowboys play at home) “You know honey, that thing could fit in here if we knocked all the walls out, and bought the neighbor’s house and knocked all their walls out, and connected the two homes. I’m just sayin’.”

The INADA i.2A Massage Chair. You’re going to need a respectable place to sit while watching your new VS (video screen), and while the old lazy-boy might be comfortable and worn-in… it’s time has come. You simply cannot watch the new VS from a lazy-boy… it’d be like wearing your Ralph Lauren loafers with that new K-50 Kiton suit. It just lacks class. An upgrade to the VS requires… demands… a corresponding upgrade to your seat. Lucky for you, the family Inada has your back (and your ass, and upper legs, if we’re technical). Suggested hint drop: “My back! It’s killing me from looking up at this thing all day. Oh God, the pain!”

Michael Jordan Fantasy Camp. Sure, it’s getting harder and harder to pull off that killer crossover you’re known for, and maybe you’ve lost a few feet off your set shot, and maybe, just maybe, that patented running hook shot has been missing the rim a little more than it used to… but’s it’s nothing a few days with his Airness can’t fix. Plus, you get a real chance to back up all those claims you made during the 1998 NBA Finals about taking Jordan to the hole. What’s to lose? Suggested hint drop: “I’m telling you, I could take that guy to the hole.”

The Pontiac Silverdome. Because you can afford it. Suggested hint drop: “You know, honey, I know we’ve been talking about that efficiency flat in San Francisco… but how ’bout the former home of the Detroit Lions? We save money on the deal, and the new VS will easily fit.”

That’ll have to do it for now, readers. I’ve just made it to the front of the line I’ve been waiting in, and apparently it’s rude to be on your notebook whilst checking out. Stupid cultural norms. I’ll have to address these when our new holiday comes to pass. Until then, spend like the wind!

Ralph Lauren cased a stir with their latest advertisement

Was Demi Moore’s head photoshopped onto Anja Rubik’s body?

When is anyone every thin enough? As demands on models grow to the extremes, they keep getting thinner. But even the thinnest of the top models aren’t cutting it in the fashion industry these days. They’re being photoshopped to half their size and made to appear inhuman, like some animated character. That’s what Ralph Lauren model Filippa Hamilton looks like to me in their new advertisement – an animated figure in some movie.

Many are now shocked over the latest cover of W magazine, featuring Demi Moore. Or is it really Demi Moore? Doesn’t it look more like Anja Rubiks body, and Demi Moore’s head and photoshopped face? I think so. W magazine claim they did not do anything out of the ordinary on Demi Moore for her cover of W. But you’ve got to wonder… why is her right hip more rounded than the indent left hip?

I for one have never noticed before that Anja Rubik and Demi Moore have the exact same body shape, down to the collarbones.

My morning usually starts with me doing 5 different things at once, until eventually I focus on one. For example, this morning I was having breakfast, while checking my mail, getting dressed and watching “Les Poupées Russes” – the follow-up movie to “L’Auberge Espagnole” (haven’t seen that yet).

As I was starting to settle into the movie, my mind started wandering to Russian dolls, and I started remembering how captivating they are – both visually and metaphorically. I’ve always been fascinated by their intricate illustrations and how perfectly they fit into each other. So I started googling, while still doing all the other things.

In Russia, these little dolls are called “Matrioshkas”, and I found some really funky ones that were designed for the 10 year anniversary of Vogue Russia:

Last year, some of fashion’s biggest names teamed up to design Matrioshkas, that were realized and hand-painted by Russian craftsmen. The result was a unique set of Matrioshkas, each “a piece of art in itself,” said Aliona Doletskaya, Russian Vogue’s editor-in-chief. Check out a few of the designs:

You can spot the distinct designers in each of the dolls. It would’ve been cool to see the entire set for each doll – inside out – but doubt there was enough time to implement. Does anyone know where I can find designer knock-offs of these dolls?

I’m simply just feeling all things LONDON right now . their vibe & appreciation for art, culture, & life in general reminds me of the times my mother lived in. Where people just appreciated and respected the integrity & hardwork of a person perusing their mind beyond the norm. Whether it received acclaim or just released tension, people, liking it or not, just respected it ! And their culture is something i can truly appreciate !! One thing they’ve inspired around the world is the ‘Pop-up Shop’ . It has become even bigger in the midst of the recession but turning a crisis into an opportunity with ingenuity is something the London culture seems really adept at doing . the picture is of House Home (in London) .

” How you gone say i ain’t no ‘Lo head… ” well i’m not a ‘Lo head but i’m definitely a big fan of Ralph Lauren and his classic American style . These RL Ranger Boots aka ” Cookie Boots ” are a major part of RL’s urban market . Not that i believe he intended to do so but the strap across the forefoot is as stylish as you can get . The previous colorway was tremendous but i think this Grey colorway tops it . i’m almost certain i will have a pair . About as certain as 88keys will have 2 pairs as well .

This is something you’ll see me post quite a lot of on the blog . ARCHITECTURE . i love it ! i like modern architecture with a very minimalist style of interior design . clean lines , with large floor to ceiling windows that let in a lot of natural light & a lot of use of ‘earth-friendly’ material . Homes, like this one inspire order & organization for me . i like subtle sophistication and can appreciate it even more within simplicity . ( the house you see is from the DLuck House Studio )

Ever since my days at the MIGHTY GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY, I have wanted a pair of Polo boots. The New Orleans and Atlanta cats knew they stayed Polo down to the socks! Last night I had a brief moment to slip out of the office and into the Milano Fashion Global Summit in the center of Milan, where the industry leaders of Italy were gathered to talk about “Who Will Survive” the Global Financial Crisis, and more importantly, how.  Of course, with most speakers getting between 5-10 minutes on the floor, it goes without saying that there was not much depth (or height, in this case?) to the Summit.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t get away in time to hear Matteo Marzotto speak about his plans for reviving the Vionnet brand, but I was able to make it there towards the end of the day, when one of my favorite topics was being highlighted: Web & Mobile Luxury. However, upon arriving at the venue, I was disappointed to find that the presentation was entitled: “Is Luxury Compatible with the Internet?”

Seriously?! …After writing about this for more than a year, and studying and working in the field for longer, I sometimes can’t believe that we are still hearing this question asked among those considered to be the industry elite.

But I digress.

The presentation was delivered by Jacques-Antoine Granjon, French CEO of vente-privee.com, a members-only online retailer of some 850 brands, typically selling end-of season products through 3-day flash sales. It’s kind of like the European version of Gilt Groupe, with what appears to be a much smaller selection of merchandise and fewer high-profile brands.

The presentation was brief, but in his defense, with only 8 minutes to deliver a message to convince business leaders that luxury and the internet do belong together, he made an entertaining synopsis.

Without further ado….

My Brief Notes on the… Brief Presentation

Following are the notes I took from the presentation. I tried to keep it as verbatim as possible, so read this with a French accent. To begin to illustrate his point, Granjon started with an analogy to online luxury…

Question: What is the most exclusive toy in the world of luxury today?

Answer: The Luxury Jet

• It saves time & offers control (controlling the when & where in life = freedom)
• It provides the best service (with highly skilled staff, pilots, maintenance & 1-to-1 travel care)
• It offers the utmost in innovation & know-how (provided through superior R&D, highest quality materials, technology & design)
• It is exclusive (traveling alone, in privacy = power)
• It provides the dream (exploration, imagination)

These five points represent the luxury codes, which the internet can provide for brands. BUT, these codes are not enough for luxury online. There are several more points:

1. The internet is not just a new format of boutique. It requires a new distribution strategy.
2. It accelerates growth and visibility of brands everywhere around the world, but only if controlled.
3. There can be no mistakes, because the internet is permanent, and it takes time to build a presence.
4. The internet is a world that requires new skills and entrepreneurial determination. In addition to the luxury codes mentioned above, in order to be successful on the internet, luxury brands need the following:

• Tech skills: must evolve as quickly as they emerge
• Digital factory: create graphics, coding, etc
• B2C distribution centers
• Award-winning customer relationship services
• Knowledge of online marketing

I see your point, but…

For those of you out there who are, like me, thinking, “That’s IT?” after reading this… yes, that’s it.

They still don’t get it. While it may seem obvious if not insufficient to those of us who eat, sleep and breathe this stuff, I have personally met CEOs and marketing managers of major luxury brands within the last year who are reluctant to start developing a branded web-presence because they fear losing control of the brand image. On the other hand, I have also met online wizards who are eager to take advantage of this lack of luxury presence online, but fail to realize that they need savvy logistics and distribution systems as well as a killer CRM program before even contemplating the notion of luxury e-commerce.

But, back to that presentation. There are two primary associations to luxury that are critical, and are blatantly missing here. When a branded online environment is created, they should definitely be addressed.

The first, and perhaps the most important of all luxury codes is connectivity (this can mean a lot of things, among them the connection a customer feels to what a brand represents, like American Aristocracy with Ralph Lauren, or to a brand’s history of jaw-dropping elegance and sex, which is what a customer is buying in a modern Vionnet dress). Some people will call this “history,” but I think it’s also important to indicate that the luxury customer is  buying into a community, connecting that history with their own.

Most luxury brands have a profound history, and if they don’t start with one, it’s often fabricated, as was the case with the Tod’s brand under Diego Della Valle’s brilliant marketing strategy (he had shoes from the new Tod’s brand superimposed on famous images of Audrey Hepburn and other classic icons). Just as the luxury jet connects us either to a location from our past, or to an exciting future, so does the luxury brand. There is a story behind it- something both intimately familiar and excitingly new. The internet is the perfect vehicle to convey that history, to tell the story about how a particular brand developed and why that brand is loved, and to build a connected community of “lovers” around it, like a family that shares the same values.

Finally, an unfortunate association to luxury that is certainly present with the private jet, and a term which occurred in my graduate research on the topic more than any of the other luxury codes, is waste or excess. Happily, the internet can help to eliminate waste in so many ways, from streamlining the supply chain on the back-end to providing the transparency that allows consumers to understand and choose what tradeoffs they are willing to make between such hot points as carbon footprints, “Made in…” issues, labor conditions, and production materials, versus price and quality.

Moving on to the other points of the presentation, I disagree with a couple of things:

  • My point: The internet accelerates growth and visibility of brands everywhere around the world, regardless of whether or not the brand controls the message. It’s always better to establish your own online presence than to entrust it solely to outsiders and amateurs, who could accelerate brand growth and visibility in an entirely undesirable way.
• His point: There can be no mistakes, because the internet is permanent, and it takes time to build a presence.
  • My point: No one is infallible. Tell a brand manager that she has to be perfect in every way on the internet, and she will never build a presence there. The beauty of the internet is that you can address mistakes right away: you apologize, publicly correct the situation, and in the process it’s likely that you actually increase your fan-base because people trust you.

So, for those of you out there who are fashion/web geeks like me, take heart: we’ve got a lot of fun work to do!
