Variety reports that Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith will star in the Chinese-Hollywood movie Kung Fu Kid, which is a so-called remake of the 1984 American box-office smash hit The Karate Kid.  In the original, the late Pat Morita created one of the most iconic characters in movie history, the Karate master known simply as “Mr. Miyagi.” He mentored Daniel Larusso, played by Ralph Macchio, a high-school kid who suffers humiliation and physical abuse at the hands of bullies who take karate from a slave-driver coach with a serious attitude problem.  Chan will apparently be a second incarnation of the “Miyagi” role, and the part of the young pupil will be played by Jaden Smith, the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith who starred alongside his father in The Pursuit of Happyness. Will Smith is also acting as one of the movie’s producers.

It’s strange to me that Kung Fu Kid’s being called a remake when so many aspects of the original have been changed. According to a post on Movieline, “the project is shooting in China due to financial obligations, thus forcing changes to parts of the original story that were specifically Japanese. These include the change from Mr. Miyagi, a carpenter born in Okinawa, to “Mr. Han,” a Chinese janitor, and also the change from karate to kung fu.”

The movie is scheduled for release next June of 2010. It is a joint project between Columbia Pictures and the China Film Group, and is being directed by Harald Zwart.  Here’s a first look at Jaden as the Kung Fu Kid.  Enjoy!

Chan was delighted by Jaden’s work ethic. “He took the training very seriously. I was very impressed with him,” Chan enthused. Chan plays the role of Mr. Han, a maintenance man who guides the young American. “Jaden had a lot of respect for me as his teacher, even off the set,” said Chan. “He is professional as many adult actors who have been in the business for years.”

“Jackie taught me to ask, ‘My left or camera left? That helped,’” said Jaden, explaining some of the knowledge Chan shared with him over the course of the shoot. Location filming in Beijing was highlighted by scenes shot on top of the Great Wall of China.

Although Jaden learned much about the film business, karate’s lessons of obedience, respect and discipline did not stop there.

“His dad told me that Jaden had changed,” Chan revealed. “When he takes his shoes off, he doesn’t throw them in the corner, but puts them away neatly!”

Jaden is best known for his role as Christopher opposite his dad in the uplifting tale ‘The Pursuit of Happyness.’ Will is the only actor in history to have eight consecutive films open at number 1 at the box office including ‘Hancock,’ ‘Hitch‘ and ‘I, Robot.’ Jada co-starred opposite her husband in ‘Ali‘ as well as in ‘The Matrix Reloaded‘ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions.’ She currently stars as Christina Hawthorne in ‘Hawthorne,’ a medical drama on TNT.

It’s November which for me is essentially closing time for the year’s great songs, because we all know that what you download in December will just end up soundtracking the early part of next year. So let us declare which ones need a download as we go through the past year.(and maybe even December of last year)

Bat For Lashes-Daniel

This might be song of the year, but there is no doubt that this single holds the best cover of the year.

Told ya it’s greatness! Anything that mixes airbrushing, Ralph Macchio, and sexy middle eastern women just can’t fail, which is exactly why I’m starting this list with it.

Like most of her work,the absurdly gorgeous Natasha Khan imparts an influence both earthy and heavenly on this song, but what separates this one from all the rest is the dark, electronic synthesizer lines and beats that are reminiscent of Touch era Eurythmics. (i.e. the album with Here Comes the Rain Again/Whos That Girl). There is also a remarkable amount of restraint shown in her soprano vocals for once, best illustrated in the fantastic Daaaaaaaaniel chorus that has yet to grow tired some eight months after it’s release. In short, it’s the best thing she’s done,  it’s the best of this new wave of Kate Bush influenced female pop songs and it’s downright unstoppable.

You get the great live appearance on superstar presenter Jools Holland’s program , even though the original video is as great as the cover(blame non embeddable video for that),

Quentin Tarantino I’ve missed you.

I’ve missed your rapid fire monologues and adventures into the deep recesses of your brain. I’ve missed your wit, your ability to make blood beautiful and most of all I’ve missed your single-minded assurance in taking what most consider a highly charged, sensitive subject and blowing the shit out of it in a battle cry that is overdue by what 70 years give or take??

Yup. My love is rekindled. Inglourious Basterds, a film with the main theme of revenge, is set in an alternate history of World War II in which the entire top leadership of Nazi Germany, namely Hitler, Goering, Goebbels and Bormann attend a film premiere in Paris celebrating the exploits of a German sniper who had managed to kill 300 American soldiers in Italy. Most of the film’s timeframe is set in early June 1944, after the D-Day landings but before the liberation of Paris.

I attended a SAG screening and director’s Q and A led by QT which included the irreverent and talented international cast single-handedly selected by QT himself. (The Tagline is a direct quote from QT in answer to why he wouldn’t meet with German born actress Diane Kruger who happily resides in LA but was required to travel to Berlin for an audition with QT.) The man has a method so don’t bother mixing meetings with your American actors in Germany or your Italians in England. If there’s business to be done it’s gonna get done in your natural habitat with the ruthless precision of “the actor’s director.”

You really don’t watch a Tarantino film nor apparently do you show up to “act” your part in one of his films. “There is a tight, clearly drawn vision with a poetic meter and pace. It’s almost like rap music.” noted QT in answer to his creative process of writing and directing. “Yeah, it’s a poetic rap which if you try to improvise or throw in your own stuff totally destroys the rhythm of the work” observed the one and only Brad Pitt.

I have always felt that you don’t really watch a Tarantino film you enter a world where the only requirement is to suspend reality and just go with him to someplace completely different than you thought you were going. Anything is possible, anything is reality. It’s like getting lost on a road trip and deciding to stop at every roadside bar, not for directions but to get the stories of strangers in process of living their lives. One of my favorite moments in the film, for example, was a scene where a one-sided romantic interest between 2 of the characters culminates in a feverish shootout. As the two lay dying in pools of blood, the scene is taken to another level by the beautifully scored music of Ennio Morricone. Pure Tarantino.

Brad Pitt as a Basterd

Brad Pitt, dressed in head to toe gray, his gorgeous mane of hair hidden by a knit hat and sporting a 3 inch goatee was the epitome of handsome indifference. He elaborated on the subject of being on a Quentin Tarantino set which apparently does not allow for going through the motions even though “ the script, the characters, the work, it is already done for you.”

“When you come on set, you gotta be ready to play. You are in church, the script is the Bible and Quentin is….GOD… You are in school and there are no naps allowed.”

Literally.

At this point Brad told the story corroborated by QT and the rest of the cast that if you where caught taking a nap on set, Quentin would snap a photo of your sloth-like mug in blissful slumber, with a huge purple dildo nestled up to you and then post it for all the cast to enjoy. Brad held up 2 fingers to the audience confirming his dubious distinction of being posted not once but twice on the board of shame.

There were many highpoints to this event like seeing the Oscar bound German actor Christoph Waltz describe his journey from relative unknown in America to landing the prized part of Col. Hans Landa, or QT relating the genesis of the film from idea stage to completion as a truly international film which is as much a foreign film with a healthy supply of subtitles as it is a vehicle smacking of American gumption and Spaghetti Western references.

At one point actor and audience member Martin Kove from The Karate Kid 2 stood up to compliment QT on his music selection which featured David Bowie’s theme from Cat People and to relate his experiences of working on the Karate Kid with the aforementioned Ennio Morricone. At that point Brad Pitt interjected that he had just watched The Karate Kid with his children and that his oldest daughter now insists upon wearing her hair spiked like Ralph Macchio’s character in the film.

At the close of the 4 hour event I realized not only was I being asked to leave the theatre but I was walking through the looking glass and exiting the magical alternate universe that is a Tarantino screening and Directors Q and A in Hollywood.

…give me the magic potion, I wanna go back.

~Smooth jazz superstar Paul Hardcastle has recorded his first-ever Christmas song, and it’s available beginning this week on the CD The Very Best Of Christmas. The CD is released by Trippin N Rhythm, Paul’s record label.
Hardcastle says he’s been asked numerous times over the years to record a Christmas CD. He hasn’t done that yet, but now he does now have the brand-new recording, “Coming Home For Christmas.” The song features vocalist Beki Biggins, who made her debut on 2008’s Hardcastle V CD. The song also has Paul’s daughter, Maxine, on background vocals, and Paul’s son, Paul Jr., on sax. Paul Jr. is also featured on his father’s current Smooth Jazz Top 20 hit single “The Circle.”
“Coming Home for Christmas” will have its debut the weekend of November 14 on a special Christmas version of Smooth Jazz Weekend, hosted by Allen Kepler. It will also be a Feedback track on the Smooth Jazz Top 20 Countdown on Thanksgiving weekend.

Who's a pretty boy?

The Hub loves nature and all that crap.  He’s not soppy about it: he will kill something for food; but only for food.  Except flies and mosquitoes.  He hates those and rejoices in every kill he makes, believing he has saved a life elsewhere, from malaria or death by fly faeces.  You should see him with his pound shop electric fly swatter: forget Monica Seles; he grunts for Africa but never misses.  He’s the Ralph Macchio of Stockport.  He has had malaria himself, so it’s understandable.  We thought at first that his ME/CFS was just another annual attack, but it never went away.

Yes, he loves nature, and spiders in particular, though he’s very fond of bees as well.  Several times, he has tried to revive a dying bumble bee, settling it on the windowsill on a leaf, with water.  It has never worked and they all died.  He has each one preserved in little plastic pin boxes with clear lids.  I think he intends to photograph them for a project.  Or he’s a nutter.  He read recently that they need honey (which seems kind of obvious now it’s been pointed out), so I had to get some in for next summer, just in case.  I’m not keen on this nature-lovin’ weirdness of his, but I did at least learn to stop being afraid of hover flies when I put out washing: they hang around in the summer, like James Dean wannabees of the insect world, and used to freak me out because they look like wasps or bees.  He took some photographs, did some research, and gave them a stay of execution because they are good for the garden and don’t come in the house.

I returned home from Nashville last night feeling moderately exhausted. Melee came over and snapped me out of it which lead to a most excellent hang.  There was plenty of homemade chicken salad and croissant rolls, Guinness was chilling in the fridge, and Crossroads was on Netflix Instant.

Not that Crossroads. This Crossroads:

I don’t know how this film got by me as a child, but it did. I blew it. Ralph Macchio crane kicks the dump outta that guitar. Throw in Joe Seneca, Steve Vai, the chick in Twister that’s not Helen Hunt, Robert Johnson, and Satan, you got yourself a veritable grab bag of yes please. Ralphie should’ve made more hobby-mastering movies. Mark told me he took up the guitar after seeing Crossroads. I wonder how many men and women out there are unadulterated Karate badasses thanks to another little  Macchio picture you might be familiar with. But how can I become awesome at something, too?

I figured it out.

How to be awesome:

1.) Pick your interest

2.) Find an old man who looks like he would know about that interest

3.) Badger him until he takes you under his tutelage

4.) Accept all advice and brutal criticism; complain mildly

5.) Complete all assignments no matter how absurd–THERE IS ALWAYS A LESSON

6.) Solve life and win forever

Okay, now I just have to get out there and do it. There’s no time to waste. I’ll get started next week-ish sometime if I’m not busy. When will you start your life?

สมัยก่อนเฉินหลงอาจจะเป็นยอดนักบู๊ฝั่งเอเชียคนนึงที่เป็นมือหนึ่งในด้านแอ็กชั่น ได้รับเสียงตอบรับในทางที่ดีและมีแนวทางในการเล่นผาดโผนอย่างโดดเด่น แต่ทุกวันนี้ ด้วยวัยที่มากขึ้นบวกกับน้องรุ่นใหม่ๆที่มาพร้อมสโลแกนเล่นจริงเจ็บจริง หรือจะเป็นเพราะตัวเขาเองที่อยากลองเล่นแนวอื่นบ้าง พักหลังๆมานี่เราจึงไม่ค่อยได้เห็นเฉินหลงออกมาบู๊ระห่ำเหมือนครั้งก่อนๆแล้ว

และถึงจะเป็นบทในหนังแอ็กชั่น ก็มักจะไม่ใช่บทแอ็กชั่นฮีโร่เต็มตัวเหมือนเมื่อก่อน แต่จะหนักไปทางตลกไม่ก็เบาลงในงานที่ต้องออกแรง ดูได้จากผลงานที่ผ่านมาและกำลังจะตามมาในอนาคต เพราะหลังจากเสร็จ Rush Hour 3 หนังต่อมาที่เป็นการร่วมงานกับเพื่อนรักเจ็ท ลีอย่าง The Forbidden Kingdom ก็ไม่ใช่หนังบู๊มันๆอย่างที่แฟนๆรอคอย แต่เป็นเทพนิยายในการตีความใหม่ของชาวตะวันตกเสียมากกว่า แถมยังเล่นเป็นอาจารย์ให้พระเอกด้วย เหมือนบทในหนังต่อมาอย่างแอนิเมชั่นสุดฮิต Kung Fu Panda ที่อาศัยความเป็นยอดกังฟูในอดีตมาสร้างคาแรกเตอร์รุ่นพี่ของเจ้าแพนด้าตัวเอก หรือการกลับมาร่วมงานกับฝั่งเอเชียเองอย่าง ใหญ่แค้นเดือด ก็ลดดีกรีลีลาบู๊ลงไปเยอะ

ส่วนบทในอนาคตที่น่าสนใจก็จะตามมาด้วย The Spy Next Door ที่เจ้าตัวรับบทคล้ายๆกับวิน ดีเซลใน The Pacifier เฉินหลงในเรื่องก็คือพี่เลี้ยงเด็กชาวจีน ( หน้าให้มาก ) ที่วันนึงความลับเผยว่าแท้จริงแล้ว ว่าเขาคือสุดยอดสายลับ ( เนื้อเรื่องคุ้นๆมั้ยเนี่ย ) และเรื่องที่เรากำลังจพูดถึงในตอนนี้ก็คือ Kung Fu Kid ที่เป็นหนังชื่อกังฟูเกี่ยวกับกังฟูอีกเรื่องที่พี่เฉินของเราเล่นเป็นอาจารย์

หนังใช้เค้าโครงเดิมจากหนังเก่าชื่อดัง Karate Kid ที่เป็นเรื่องของเด็กหนุ่มที่ได้มาเจอกับอาจารย์กังฟูจนได้วิชานั้นมาและกลายเป็นคนใหม่ที่กลับมายืนบนลำแข้งตัวเองได้อีกครั้ง

ซึ่งเวอร์ชั้นใหม่ก็ได้เปลี่ยนจากวิชาคาเรเต้มาเป็นกังฟูอย่างที่เห็น เพื่อที่จะได้เข้าทางเฉินหลง แต่หนังจะทำได้ดีเหมือนที่ฉบับเก่าสร้างไว้ได้หรือไม่ มาดูกันว่ามีอะไรบ้างที่ทีมงานต้องหนักใจ

อย่างแรกเลยหนังฉบับปี 1984 เป็นหนังที่ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างสูงจนขึ้นแท่นหนังคลาสสิก ตลอดจนมีภาคต่อตามมาอีกสองภาคและแจ้งเกิดให้ดาราหนุ่ม Ralph Macchio อย่างสวยงาม……Jaden Smith ที่ผ่านงานแสดงมาแล้วสองเรื่อง ล้วนแล้วแต่ประสบความสำเร็จไม่ทางใดก็ทางหนึ่งเช่นกัน อาจจะแจ้งเกิดได้ในวงกว้างหรือเปล่านั้น น่าลุ้นยิ่งกว่าอะไรทั้งหมดเสียอีก

สอง นี่เป็นงานกำกับของ John G. Avildsen หนึ่งรางวัลออสการ์จาก Rocky หนังกีฬาดราม่าคลาสสิกเช่นกัน แต่ของใหม่นี่ได้ Harald Zwart ที่เพิ่งคว่ำไปกับภาคต่อ The Pink Panther 2 เมื่อต้นปีมาหมาดๆ แต่เคยทำหนังสายลับรุ่นเล็กจนดังมาแล้วจาก Agent Cody Banks

สาม Pat Morita ที่เพิ่งลาโลกไปไม่นานมานี้ เจ้าของบทอันน่าจดจำ Mr. Kesuke Miyagi ที่เป็นผู้ถ่ายทอดวิชาให้เจ้าหนูนั้นชิงออสการ์ครั้งแรกและครั้งเดียวจากเรื่องนี้ และเป็นรางวัลเดียวที่หนังเข้าชิงด้วย ส่วนเฉินหลงนั้นถึงจะมีฝีไม้ลายมือเป็นที่ประจักษ์ แต่ทั้งโลกก็ยังจดจำเขาในฐานะฮีโร่หน้าตี๋มาดฮาๆอยู่ดี แต่หลังจากรับเล่นในใหญ่แค้นเดือด บทที่เป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงพอสมควรจากเล่นๆมาเป็นเค้นอารมณ์ บางทีนี่ก็อาจเป็นอีกหนึ่งจุดเปลี่ยนอีกครั้งก็ได้

อย่างไรก็ตามกว่าหนังจะฉายก็ 11 มิถุนายนปี 201O โน่น ยังมีเวลาให้จับตามองอีกเยอะ ถึงนี่จะเป็นหนังรีเมคก็ตามที และอย่าลืมว่านี่เป็นการเจอกันของอาจารย์เอเชียกับเด็กน้อยผิวสีอีกด้วย !!!

Poucas horas depois do falecimento de Patrick Swayze, por todo o mundo surgem manifestações de saudade e carinho. Segundo a Folha Online Demi Moore, protagonista juntamente com Patrick Swayze no filme “Ghost – Do outro lado da vida”, lamentou a morte do ator em sua página do Twitter na madrugada desta terça, 15.09.2009:

“Patrick, você é amado por tantos, e sua luz vai brilhar para sempre em nossas vidas”, publicou a atriz no microblog.

Patrick Swayze em 'The Beast', seu último trabalho na TV

Hollywood está de luto nesta terça-feira após a morte do ator Patrick Swayze vítima de um câncer depois de 20 meses de luta contra uma doença que este ano também levou Farrah Fawcett e Bea Arthur.

Swayze foi protagonista de sucessos como “Dirty Dancing” (1987) e “Ghost” (1990), obteve três candidaturas ao Globo de Ouro e foi considerado o homem mais atraente do mundo pela revista People em 1991.

Seus companheiros de profissão Rob Lowe, Whoopi Goldberg e Kirstie Alley foram os primeiros a mostrar suas condolências à família e a fazer chegar sua tristeza após produzir-se a morte ontem.

“Foi um ator intenso, cheio de paixão e vigor. Definitivamente tirava o máximo disso e viveu cem vidas em uma”, manifestou Lowe.

“Ele sempre estará perto”, declarou à revista People Whoopi Goldberg, sua companheira em “Ghost”.

I’ve never been the biggest Karate Kid fan, partly because I never understood why anyone in the 80s thought Ralph Macchio could carry a movie. Probably the best part of the music is the crazy over the top evil of the bad guys, especially Johnny played by William Zabka. Zabka has written and directed the music video above featuring his character. The song kind of sucks, but the video is fascinating. More because it involves people still harking back to their moments of glory from their youth. This could easily serve as a warning for peaking too early. I certainly hope that when I am in my mid to late 40s I won’t still be trying to recapture my shining moment from my twenties (not that I’ve necessarily had one…)
