This coming from “that” guy from the rap face-off commercial with the late Francis M and the new Mcdo Commercials.

For a guy who is made to look hilariously stupid on TV, he is precisely on point with this.

The youth, probably the biggest “swing” vote there is ever going to be, cannot help but be targets of media bombardment and trends. Fads, and excessive media exposure plays a huge part in dictating what they want (for the moment, that is)

Not to underestimate Mr. Bautista (who is a disc Jock at 99.5RT and teaches at the UP Film Institute), but he does make a fine point.

Could this be just another fad?

Are Politicians using this “What’s In” mentality to their advantage?

I do believe the youth is now more aware of the issues. But its probably wise for the youth to stop and ponder first.

Do I vote him because it’s cool to vote for him?

Or do I stop and think it over first, and hopefully realize that the election is not merely a choice between what’s cool and what’s not.

Thank God for Ramon Bautista.

I have to admit it I’m an avid fan of this guy. He is funny as hell! All his videos made me laugh.

Living in Singapore by yourself is not really fun. And I survive the loneliness by watching this guy’s funny antics. So, whats up with Ramon Bautista? Aside from his new babe as shown in the picture… well he is now introducing a new sport to be played in the Olympics.

I dedicate this video to my Singaporean friend Benjamin. Why? Because this is the first video I posted that he will probably understand! Ramon tried his best to speak in English in this video – that alone is reason enough to laugh.

This time Ramon Bautista went to the busy streets of Cubao as Dan Michael the Magician. He’s been doing magic since last year, he traveled, entertained and uplifted the hearts of men. How did he do it? He said true magic comes from within. It is something that cannot be taught.

“It’s nothing to me really, magic is second nature and to top it up I have good looks – how can I go wrong?” he said. “I have always proven to be the best in whatever I do, I’ve been there – done that… and now its time for magic”.

Indeed, what he is saying is true. Prior to this he battled the king of pinoy rap – Francis Magalona for supremacy.  One on one rap battle that shook the earth.  “I’ve battled Francis Magalona and came out as the second finalist – not bad right?”

Yeah… right!

Let me introduce to the world – Ramon Bautista; The good, the bad, and the funny. Philippine TV comic and radio personality goes to a very rigorous rap training to challenge the country’s top rapper into a showdown.

Who the F*ck is Ramon Bautista you might ask? The answer – nevermind.

Ask Ramon what it takes to be a rap star, according to his video you need to have a natural talent and good looks like him. But it would also help if you will enroll to a rap school. And his recommendation – Master Balagtas School of Rap.

There he learned from the very best – Master Balagtas.

He mastered the ancient art of rhyming. For example he said, here is an example:

“Baa Baa blacksheep have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir, three bags of _________”. The correct rhyme is – “three bags or four“.

Aside from rhyming what else do you need to be a master rapper? Master Balagtas said “Get up” is very important.

“I have to learn to walk the talk” says Ramon Bautista. “After all the right looks can make me sindak the opponents immediately.”

Bautista also reveals that to futher hone his craft, he will try to challenge people he meets along the street.

The finale will be a duel with Francis Magalona, the Pinoy King of Rap!

There’s more to Ramon Bautista than meets the eye

Bautista straddles his existence
between teaching and filmmaking.

Ramon Bautista—if that name rings a bell, its because he had been invaded MTV with his very own show, staring in various music videos for local bands, endorsing products here and there, hosting the Pasyal television travel show for Studio 23, and the Brewrats radio program for Campus FM 99.5. This guy who claims bumming is his passion has a lot of work on his hands.

The professor and the filmmaker

Bautista, a filmmaker, was hired as a professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute after his thesis Makina—a short animated film on greed—and Mga Bangkang Papel sa Swimming Pool ng Kumukulong Arnibal—a documentary about film making—both won awards here and abroad. He is currently finishing his masters degree in Film.

As a professor, he puts on his serious side. “Being a teacher in the premier state university in the country, most people expect a lot from me, so I try hard to do my best. I can’t do all the stupid stuffs in front of them. There has to be mutual respect. Their grades are in my hands so my students have to take me seriously. It’s 80 percent education and 20 percent fun here, which is the opposite on my shows,” Bautista says.

Besides working hard at being lazy, Bautista declares that filmmaking is his second passion. This independent filmmaker has little sympathy for the beleaguered mainstream movie industry. “Just let the passionate filmmakers make films and let the passionate moviegoers watch film. That’s all we can do, if it dies it dies.”

Gadfly

Having appeared in humorous music videos of Radioactive Sago Project and Sugarfree, he has been typecast as a comedian. But Bautista doesn’t considered himself as one. “I prefer to be in other roles too like drama or boy-next-door type, maybe it’s some sort of untapped talent for directors out there to come and discover that. I’m a real good actor you know, I’m really an emotional guy,” he claims.

His stint in music videos led MTV to create the Ramon Bautista Show with award-winning music video director RA Rivera. In one episode of the show, Bautista asks for help from different local artists to teach him how to play the guitar in his trademark deadpan broken English.

With Brewrats, he joins fellow filmmaker/television icon Tado Jimenez to create a radio version of the defunct television show Strangebrew. “It’s like an absurd, comedic gag show which talks about anything but most of the time it’s really educational if you take a closer look,” he explains.

As absurdist as his works may seem, Ramon Bautista’s artistry and intelligence shows itself to those who discern.

Last Tuesday I guested at the Brewrats radio show in 99.5 RT FM and performed a short stand up comedy set to promote my book Chopsticks 2 and Nosebleed Magazine.  The gang of Ramon, Tado, and Angel were very accomodating and even interviewed me about the book, I met UP volleyball players Cathy Barcelon and Maan Panganiban along with my magician friend Marcelle Fabie who also guested to promote their November show with Wikipilipinas.  We even had the chance to answer questions from the listeners and give opinions on different topics that they discussed like weddings, chinese stuff, and magic.  I’ll be back again next month to promote our Conspiracy and Spicy Fingers shows.  Brewrats is from Monday to Thursday 9PM to 12AM so tune in to 99.5 RT FM for some humorous insights from the terrific trio of Ramon, Angel, and Tado!

Where it all begins

(While my producer Monster is holding me on a project embargo until I finish the film, I’ll be posting entries about how it was like to shoot Baby Angelo)

Call sheet: “Basurero day”
8 April / No. of sequences: 8 / No. of actors: 8 / Call-time: 9 am / Estimated pack-up: 2 am / Actual pack-up: 6 am

Big day!! After many weeks of starts and stops, of finding just the right mix of crazy staff and talented actors, we’re set to go. Our main location is in Baesa, Caloocan City. Prior to the shoot I’ve never even been in Caloocan in my life. Apparently neither did 90% of the rest of the staff and cast.

Cast as Genevieve Homes, our main actor, is a U-shaped apartment complex owned by Andong, a jeepney driver who saved up enough to build the apartment. It’s an odd building, with one wing having pebble-washed halls and walls, and the other wing done in yellow-painted cement. We transformed the center of the complex into a community area where our characters would meet. The residents were great; they were very excited to have us around. They were also very accommodating and at the end of the shoot, many had become fast friends with the staff. Very friendly. Anyway little did they know that we would be ruining their lives for the next month…

Today was pretty much a warm-up day, mostly transitional scenes and moodsetters and scenes with minor dialogue. Jojit Lorenzo (“Bong”) our lead was on hand as well as fellow ensemble actors Dante Balois (“Mr. Chiu”) and Cedrick Lamberte (“Ike”). Jojit is scheduled to show up for every shooting day, poor guy, while everyone else had only half of that, max.

The first company call. We prayed for the real Baby Angelo and Tracy’s dad, Tito Gozen, who was sick.

First scene shot ever for the movie: Seq 90: Mr. Chiu sweeps.

What the staff had to contend with during the first few days. You’d think we were shooting a Judy Ann Santos movie instead of a handful of theater veterans. Later on though everyone there pretty much treated us as furniture.

Two hours of tengga in the middle of the night while waiting for our actors for Sequence 1, both very busy guys who took time off their busy schedules to work for us. Can you guess who they are? Seq 1 is our only big scene for the day. We packed up at 6 am, chasing the light, something that I really, REALLY f**king hate. Little did we know that this would be something we would be doing for the rest of the shoot.

In the days leading to the shoot I was a nervous wreck, my face broke out like a horny teenager’s, I was madly scribbling notes in any bit of paper I can find, reading the script several times a day until I memorized where each semicolon was, and watching many, many movies – til I stopped because I feared I would be ripping them off (I probably did). On shoot day itself I put it all away, confident that the salient parts were so buried in my consciousness that it would just tumble out when we do the shots.
You know what they say about the best laid plans. So I let them all go. You have to let the movie come out, let it speak to you and tell you what it needs to be, and as the director you let it breathe and just become. Instead of hammer it into what you think it is. It’s a fantastic feeling, the feeling of creation; a feeling that won’t go away for the next 13 days no matter how sleep-deprived, dehydrated and exhausted I was.
