For me the best track on Fantazia’s First Taste album. Its got it all, rocking breaks, massive synths and a piano/ vocal break thats out of this world.

Delara just clocked me rocking out to it and told me im due to join the 21st century (she even did a nice running man for effect). If there was ever a track that would make me not want too. This would be it.

Daniel Wise of the New York Law Journal has an interesting article out today on a recent New York state court decision involving a complex dispute over assets of former Philippines dictator, Ferdinand Marcos, being held by Merrill Lynch in New York.  The court ordered that the funds be paid to satisfy part of a $2 billion judgment awarded to class members in a successful class action filed in federal court in Hawaii under the Alien Tort Claims Act, on behalf of individuals injured by human rights abuses committed by the Marcos regime.  The current government of the Philippines claims entitlement of the funds, claiming that it has a sovereign interest. 

The same funds were the subject of a federal interpleader action filed by the brokerage to resolve issues over various competing claims to the funds.  The United States Supreme Court dismissed that action in 2007 after concluding that the Philippine government and a Philippine commission, who had sovereign immunity from having to participate in the interpleader proceeding, were indispensible parties.  The state court faced a similar issue, but interpreting the state joinder rule, it found that the two entities were necessary, but not indispensible parties, which meant that the case could go forward without them.

The cases reflect an intriguing and complicated interplay between a variety of private and governmental interests.  The individual class members claim entitlement to a personal remedy for injuries caused by human rights violations of the former Philippine government.  The current Philippine government has a sovereign interest in being free from having its rights determined by foreign courts, and it wants to use the assets to fund public programs.  The State of New York has an interest in making decisions about disputed funds held within its borders, but one of its courts disagrees with the analysis of the nation’s highest court about the importance of the sovereign interests of a foreign nation over those same funds.  In the middle of it all is a bank who probably just doesn’t want to get sued again for giving the money to the wrong party.

Something tells me that there will be much more to this story…

I’ve mentioned my love of skirmish games in the past – games usually involving only a handful of models, where each is significant, where each matters. Prime examples would be GW’s Necromunda and Mordheim games, both of which were pretty bloody awesome, even if they’re currently not in general production and you have to get your bits and bobs from their online store.

Well, until Privateer makes me squeal with glee by releasing an Iron Kingdoms squad-based skirmish game, preferably with a character development system of some sort, I have to look at other options.

Enter Malifaux.

A game still very much in its early days, it’s a squad-based skirmish level game set in a gothic/horror/steampunk/wild west kinda setting. Okay, I’m not into horror stuff as a general rule, but I do dig steampunk (I blame Privateer entirely for that), and I can get into a Western setting, so my curiosity was piqued enough to do some further research.

After staring at the models for a while, I chose a crew and ordered the rulebook. Yes, this contravenes the directive to actually know what models do before choosing a faction and investing, but I’m nothing if not a creature of whimsy, and dammit, I liked what I saw. Rules be damned, I have difficulty enjoying a faction if I don’t like the way it looks, so choosing based purely on the model aesthetic wasn’t *too* far off my normal procedures anyway.

I read the book, I played a test game against uberpainter Hank Raab and skinny Khadoran Rich “Orcasaurus” Godwaldt (Moonova had to skedaddle, unfortunately). I fully assembled my models, cleaned ‘em up and hit ‘em with some Privateer white primer. Let’s take a look at some initial impressions.

The System

Here’s some significant in miniatures gaming: No dice. Everything’s based on a deck of cards… and yes, you can use a regular household deck of cards if you don’t want to fork out for an official Malifaux deck. 52 cards in four suits + 2 jokers and you’re good to go.

This takes some real mental adjustment, and I’m thinking will be one of the hardest initial hurdles to getting people interested in the game, but even after a single game of say, at least half a dozen turns so you have time to try things out, players will be comfortable enough with the card mechanic.

It works thus:

Everything you want to do – cast a spell, shoot an opponent, poke ‘em with a stick, whatever – has a target number, and in some cases a target suit. You check the appropriate stat on your model, then flip the top card of your deck. Add your stat to the number, compare to the target, and right there you know whether you succeeded or not. For the record, many interactions are duels – My stat+card against a target number of Your stat+card.

Now that’s pretty similar to a dice-based mechanic – my stat+roll vs your stat+roll… but here’s where it gets funky.

You can cheat fate, or spend soulstones.

Cheating Fate: As well as having your deck, every turn you have a hand of cards. Once in each interaction, you can replace the card you flipped with a card from your hand. You might want to do this to increase your total, or to change the card to a suit you need , since some spells and abilities require both a target number and a specific suit.

Soulstones: In Warmachine terms, these are your Mk II Warjack points, and whatever points you had left over in your list. Say you were building a 25 pt Malifaux Crew, but only bought 22pts worth of models. You’d get 3 soulstones right there, plus whatever was listed as your Master’s cache value. So if that cache was 4, you’d get 7 soulstones to use during the game. The way these affect the game is, you can expend one (as long as the character you’re activating has the ability to use soulstones) to flip a second card from the top of your deck, and add it to the existing card, giving you a higher total and potentially two different suits if your action required them.

Example: My dude, Bob, wants to shoot your dude, Jim.

• My combat stat is 3, I flip a 9 of Masks, for a total of 12. Your defense stat is 4, you flip an 11 of Crows, for a total of 15.

• Right now it looks like I’m going to miss, so I Cheat Fate with a 12 of Tomes I had in my hand, bringing my total to 15, equaling your defense total – I’m hitting.

• You don’t have any cards higher than an 11 in your hand, so you can’t Cheat Fate to make your total higher, but Jim is your Master, so you spend a soulstone and get to flip another card – a 7 of Rams – and add it to your total, so now you have a combined total of 22, and both the Rams and Crows suits.

• I’m gonna miss, but Bob doesn’t have the soulstone ability, so I can’t raise my total any further. I miss.

• If it turns out your Jim had a passive ability that triggered whenever he defended with a Rams card, you could fire it off now too.

It all sounds a bit complicated, and there’s always abilities which will affect the values further, but one or two tries and you’ll have it down pat.

The neat trick here is that by cheating fate, you’ve got the option to (in Warmachine terms) boost the attack roll after seeing whether or not you miss – you can counteract a low number – but your resources are limited. Much like your Warcaster with his focus, you’ve only got so many cards and so many soulstones to ‘boost’ with. Do you use them now, on this attack, or do you camp them to boost your armour?

Additionally, you can keep whatever cards you want in your hand each turn, while the rest cycle back into the deck. Do you keep high number cards in your hand for next turn, knowing that that leaves a higher proportion of low number cards in the deck, or do you keep the lower number cards in your hand, increasing the chances of your flipping a higher value card initially or when you use a soulstone?

Then, there’s the additional scope for buff and debuff effects. Not only might you be able to increase or decrease a stat value, you can pull a Vlad/Calandra. In terms of a buff this means flip an extra card and use the highest value. In terms of a debuff, flip an extra card and use the lowest. There are abilities that can put out a two cards buff or debuff, meaning you’re flipping a total of three cards and using the highest or lowest accordingly.

And of course, the red joker is essentially a critical hit, and the black joker is a critical miss.

Another variation from what we WarmaHordesers are used to is the activation order. Each turn, initiative is determined by a card flip (which you can cheat fate or use a soulstone on if you want), and then the winner gets to activate a single model. Not his entire crew, a single model.

Players then alternate activating models until everyone’s activated.

This can be freakin’ critical, because by and large most effects don’t carry over from activation to activation – they end at the end of the turn.

Case in point, in our test game Rich was able to activate his master, Pandora, first. He then slapped a handful of debuff effects on my master, Rasputina, before I could set up a single defensive measure. Nothing.

I then had to pass a willpower test to do an action at all, a second one to attack Pandora, and then – only after I passed both – was I able to flip for an attack. These willpower tests were debuffed so I was flipping two cards and taking the lowest, and if I didn’t cheat fate or use a soulstone to make sure I passed the test, I took damage. It was freakin’ brutal.

In activating that one model to try to get the last minute win with her three actions, I used something like 6 soulstones, every card in my hand, and approximately half of my deck with flips and cheats and soulstone use et al. I don’t care that it didn’t work in the end, we were playing to learn the game and it was freakin’ epic as Rasputina tried to fight through everything Pandora had thrown at her. Much fun.

Now, if I’d been able to activate Rasputina first, I could have summoned ice collumns, a defensive windwall/snowstorm, whatever. Or, I could have activated one of my other models, and simply walked it over to block line of sight. There were options, but since Rich had initiative, he got to get his assault in first while my defenses were down.

So yeah, the card system looks awkward and confusing at first, but lo and behold, it’s actually viable, and potentially gives you a lot more control over the game then dice do. It’s worth at least sitting in on a demo to get a feel for it before you balk and thumb your nose at it.

El Madrid es como esa pareja que después de 20 años de espectaculares polvos con la receta del misionero, deciden probar el salto del Koala cuando sube al alcornoque y terminan rompiéndose una pierna. Creo que se han aburrido de ganar, y que ahora lo que les pone cachondos es hacer el ridículo. Porque si caer eliminado por segundo año consecutivo por un Segunda B es para mear y no echar gota, descubrir al día siguiente que tu lateral derecho podía jugar y tú no lo sabías, es de pisquiátrico. Yo creo que a Pellegrini se le olvidó que podía contar con Pellegrini. Y entonces se convirtió en algo más parecido a Abel o a Aguirre o a cualquier tuercebotas que alguna vez haya sentado sus posaderas en el banquillo colchonero.

Al chileno lo ha sacado ya el Marca de la lista de Papa Noel,  y ahora me imagino que andarán buscando a otro. Da igual. El Madrid no necesita otro entrenador. Necesita un condensador de fluzo que permita a Florentino volver al principio de temporada y poder apostar por el entrenador que él mismo había elegido. Necesita un Delorean que vuele y que trasnporte a Pérez al primer partido de Liga para que le pueda decir al chileno que entrenar al Madrid es hacer lo mismo que hacía en Villarreal pero con unos señores que visten de blanco. Porque el mareo sensacional al se ven sometidos los entrenadores de la Casa Blanca desde hace unos años con eso de la responsabilidad histórica sólo tiene una salida, el ridículo.

Y a mí, como atlético, esto me preocupa. Y mucho. Me preocupa esta trayectoria circense que está describiendo el Madrid en las últimas semanas, porque ya no nos deja lugar ni para ser el pupas. ¡Seis a cero, gensanta! ¡Qué barbaridad! Y todo después de la jarana del Calderón, que me ha tenido cuatro días en el dique seco y de la que nada más esbozaré la siguiente reflexión: cinco años seguidos sin ganar convierten el partido en un trámite para el Madrid. Pero doce ya lo elevan a la categoría de tradición.  El derbi se ha convertido en la cabalgata de los Reyes Magos. Es posible que si por fin logramos ganarles algún día impugnen el partido acogiéndose al Derecho Consuetudinario.

Decía un famoso entrenador que cuando un equipo no está cerrado, hay muchas posibilidades de que termine resucitando a los muertos. Se refería a que un equipo que aún no está del todo hecho, acaba teniendo minutos de desconcierto que puede aprovechar su adversario para meterse en el partido. Ayer, fue inevitable que me acordara de él en el tiempo en que el Madrid navegaba a la deriva resignado a su suerte desde que Agüero pusiera un 2-3 que se antojaba imposible unos minutos antes.

Lo cierto es que, siendo justos, los acontecimientos fueron muy desfavorables al Madrid en esos minutos. Para entonces Raúl ya había salido por Higuaín y, aunque la lógica decía que el equipo merengue necesitaba un delantero rápido para las pocas contras de que dispusiera, no era menos necesario reforzar el centro del campo cuando el equipo se quedó con 10. Así, el damnificado fue Benzema (para mí de los mejores ayer) para dar entrada a Gago. Ahí se terminó el Madrid y asistimos atónitos a una remontada de la que sólo el Atleti es capaz. No la culminó, pero bien pudo hacerlo si Agüero llega a acertar un gran pase de Maxi en el tiempo de descuento. Fueron minutos locos que no supo –o no le dejaron- jugar el Real Madrid. Se vio superado, y Raúl fue incapaz de aguantar un solo balón para que el equipo se estirase un poco. Tampoco ayudó la facilidad con que Gago pierde la posición. Pero sobre todo, esos minutos evidenciaron las terribles carencias de Marcelo como lateral. El agujero por su costado fue la vitamina que necesitaba un Atleti moribundo para engancharse al partido.

Pero no nos engañemos, esos 15 minutos fueron una excepción. Una bendita excepción de locura Atlética que llegó cuando el partido estaba decidido. Antes, el Madrid había sido insultantemente superior. Sin hacer un gran partido, los blancos manejaron a su rival y le noquearon hasta dejarlo K.O. O casi. Kaká hizo diabluras ante la parsimonia de un equipo local que no tenía como pararle. Benzema, que va a más, se desenganchaba para combinar con todo el mundo, y Marcelo aportaba llegada desde su desorden. Estuvo más rato como delantero que como centrocampista, pero lo cierto es que llevó peligro y su partido puede calificarse de bueno (hasta que Pellegrini tuvo a bien retrasar su posición). Xabi Alonso y Lass se comieron literalmente al centro del campo colchonero, en el que solo Jurado soltó de vez en cuando algún pase acertado. Es curioso que Quique lo eligiera precisamente a él para introducir al Kun Agüero después de ver como Cleber y Raúl García apenas aportaron nada. Pero era tarde, pese a que el argentino hiciera auténticas diabluras que pusieron en duda el resultado final. Me sorprendió que saliera desde el banquillo. El Atleti, ya sin Champions, y con la jornada de selección que se avecina, hizo una concesión a su rival. Estos partidos hay que jugarlos con los buenos y dejarse de milongas.

Y si concesión fue la no inclusión de Agüero, habría que buscar un calificativo para el regalo de Perea. Uno más. Me pregunto que pasaría por la cabeza del colombiano para tratar de regatear a Higuaín en esa zona del campo. Me pregunto también que ventaja esperaba sacar de hacerlo. El pipita le robó la pelota y puso un 0-3 que deja en evidencia que hay cosas que un entrenador no puede cambiar. Lo lógico es pensar que Perea no va a volver a jugar un partido con Quique en el banquillo. Igual debería bajar a entrenar con los juveniles para repasar ciertos conceptos que tiene olvidados.

La conclusión es que el Madrid, que hizo un partido más que digno, vio empañada su victoria por unos minutos de descontrol total en los que el Atlético pudo neutralizar la ventaja de tres goles que le llevaba su eterno rival. El mal tino (y Casillas), hicieron que los tres puntos se fueran a Chamartín. Una vez más. Y van muchas en los últimos tiempos como para pensar que fue casualidad. El Madrid fue el mejor y el árbitro el peor. Sin discusión.

Casillas sigue estando ahí. Cuando sus compañeros se relajan y dejan jugar al rival, es el portero quien gana los partidos. Contra el Atlético volvió a repetirse la misma historia. El Madrid volvió a mostrar dos caras, como en Milan. Dominó y combinó en la primera parte y desconectó en la segunda. La justa expulsión de Ramos no tuvo efectos positivos para los blancos, que vieron cómo el Atlético rozó el empate. Menos mal que estaba Casillas.

Había ocurrido en los últimos años y esta vez siguió la tradición. El Real Madrid se puso por delante nada más comenzar el partido (minuto 4), gracias a un soberbio derechazo de Kaká desde la frontal. Fue tan brillante que la luz del brasileño se apagó para el resto del partido. El marcador a favor afianzó al Madrid en el campo, tan móvil y rápido como en San Siro.

El segundo gol fue obra de Marcelo. Benzema recibió en el área y se la dio al antes lateral. Ahora es extremo o incluso delantero, cualquier cosa es factible dentro de su caos. Marcelo se perfiló con la derecha y fusiló a Asenjo por el palo corto. El Atlético no apareció hasta el final de la primera parte. Simao disparó seco y Casillas sacó una mano complicada, pero que él hizo fácil.

Tras el descanso, el Madrid volvió a demostrar que no es capaz de jugar alerta 90 minutos. Aun así, supo aumentar su ventaja. Perea le regaló el balón a Higuaín y el hambriento argentino no perdonó. Fuimos muchos los que dimos el partido por finiquitado, victoria fácil para el Madrid.

Entonces, un minuto después, llegó la expulsión de Ramos. Agüero entró veloz y el sevillano le hizo falta por detrás. Roja justa. Pellegrini retrasó a Lass al lateral y cambió a Benzema por Gago. Al contrario que la semana pasada, la recomposición no salió bien. El Madrid se acababa en el mediocentro. Arriba sólo estaba Raúl, luchando contra gigantes y defensas.

En el 78′, Forlán conectó con Ujfalusi. El checo centró al área y el uruguayo llegó desde atrás para marcar, mientras Pepe le marcaba con la vista. El Madrid sacó de centro, Cléber robó rápidamente y envió para el veloz Agüero, que le ganó la pugna varonil a Pepe. El Kun batió a Casillas y acercaba el milagro.

Cuando vi las fotos de tu boda, me emocioné. Al diseñar ramos de novia, intento adaptarme a la personalidad y al estilo de nuestras clientas. Creo sinceramente, que los ramos de novia son el complemento de una boda que más marca la personalidad, incluso tanto como el vestido. Nos indica el carácter romántico, tierno, actual, sensible, optimista o amigable de una mujer. Diseño el ramo intentando imaginarme como quedará ….. así cuando me trajiste las fotos, Ángela, me emocioné. Estabas radiante y preciosa, y con mucho estilo. Enhorabuena.

Gracias a ti y a otras novias donzoileras, consigo avanzar desarrollando mi propio camino. Un camino lleno de bellas flores. Gracias a todas.

As a seemingly fitting anniversary present for us and nearly exactly one year since his dismissal as head coach at White Hart Lane, (along with Damien…); Juande Ramos is once again out of a job. Seems that he can’t keep one these days for love nor money. We can suspect that losing 3-1 at home to FK Moscow was the final straw on the camel’s back this time; a result which saw CSKA Moscow drop to fifth in the Russian Premier League. Whilst it is somewhat ironic that Ramos would consider taking a job in Russia, with his specific weaknesses in adapting his language and style of coaching to the culture that his team are from. Simply put; what was the crazy bastard thinking!? Especially seeing as he restored some of his credibility with a somewhat successful stint as the top dog, (or indeed bitch) at Real Madrid.

I hold no real massive grudge against Ramos; as it was his impetus that brought Modric and some of our other good prospects to the club that fateful summer. (Though Bentley and Gio haven’t really made too much headway so far; I think we can still consider them purchases which were, for the most part ambitious when compared to our previous dips into the market). Whilst it can be seen as a bit of a linear way of consoling what can be seen as a largely haphazard stint at the Lane for Ramos, there was always a sense that under the surface he knew what he was talking about, despite the fact that seemingly none of the players themselves had a clue. Inspired performances and eventually taking home the tin cup was the evidence of this, and whilst Harry’s campaign last year was nearly as fruitful you can perhaps argue that we weren’t looking to win the cup in such a considered style.

Whilst Ramos’ tenure can largely be seen as a inkblot on the exercise book; his removal did coincide with that of the much hated Damien Comolli, who in charge of transfers could arguably be seen as the man who single handedly saved Ramos, (and indeed our headhunting chairman), from total and utter travesty, as it was Ramos’ reputation that allowed us to attract a different breed of player and for the most part be the equivalent of the ambitious Manchester City if only for one window.

Times have changed now, and whilst we can look back frowning at a wasted season last year, (if only Harry had come in earlier?) it can be argued that despite their resemblance to a shower of fecal matter, the dastardly duo managed to set us up with a squad that with some development can give the oil teams a fierce run for their money and even (maybe) get us back on the european stage once more.
