Don’t go and paddle out the back until you have mastered the whitewater. All you need is a surfboard, some swimming ability and a nearby beach.

Your height will also help you determine which board is for you, because your surfboard should always be at least 6″ taller than you are no matter what. Longboards are more stable than shortboards, and catch waves with less effort on the part of the beginner surfer.

Safety, surf etiquette, positioning yourself for the perfect ride, and getting acquainted with your surfboard and what you need to know first. Easier to carry and manage out in the water but with all the surfing ease of a longboard. Surfing in familiar territory always helps.

Get fit and spend time in the pool if you need to. Lead with your head. You’ll need to do a lot of this later on, and it also improves your balance.

Take note of where you should be surfing before you go out, and make sure you stick to it when you are out. If you are paddling out then keep hold of your board, you’ll get out back to the line up more quickly and you will not put anyone paddling out behind you at risk.
