This is without a doubt the worst Rangers and Celtic squads that I have seen in the entirety of the time that I have been old enough to have an opinion that counted! (at 30, that’s 15-20 years in case your wondering)

Gone are the days of who’s best. The winner of the SPL is now determined by who is worst! With the glory times over, Gone are the days of high profile signings and big big money getting thrown about for average players (Flo, Rothental, Bratback). The old firm can no longer even afford to simply buy out all the best players from their lesser competitors in order to maintain the gap (Caldwell, Brown, Boyd, Whittaker, Naismith, Hartley……….. This list could go on a while!).

In fact, during this time when both Rangers and Celtic are struggling domestically, and in Europe- I find the fact that they feel hard done by because of their Premiership rejection absolutely hilarious!

A successful strategy that I have enjoyed this year is to oppose whom ever is play the old firm in Europe – home or away!

We’re now more that a quarter of the way through the Scottish season, and we have 3 points separating the top four teams.

Rangers will struggle to dominate an Aberdeen side, who shall be up for this one (why can’t they raise their game against every other team? – this must frustrate reds fans!). Celtic would normally have their match against St Mirren in the books before kick-off, but such outcomes can no longer be banked upon! Neither side shall be on my coupon this weekend! Gone are the days that I am willing to take odds of 1/3, just to boost the winnings- NO THANK YOU! The bookies must be killing themselves laughing this season!

I fancy Hibs to stuff Falkirk this weekend, & the match up between Dundee Utd and Motherwell will keep both sides in touch of the Glasgow giants, regardless of the outcome. But can any of the teams outside the top 2 sustain a run that we are still talking about in May?

Will this be the year of the underdog- probably not. Bet my top tip in Scotland for the foreseeable future, is to keep clear of the old firm, because their opposition no longer fear them!!!

Reported yesterday, Andruw Jones signed a one year deal with the Chicago White Sox.  My guess, is that for the next 3 – 4 years you are going to see this happen every off-season.  What is incredible is that Jones is still gaining interest from teams.  He has proven since his last season in Atlanta that he has given up on being the potential 40 – 40 he once was.

No now you get a large turkey (had to put a thanksgiving reference in there).  Once he was a slim 195, now he has ballooned to nearly 250lbs or more.  He once was a nightmare to hit to given his athletic ability, now he owns the DH slot.  About the only thing he can do in the outfield is catch the ball (as long as it’s hit within 10 feet of him).

To me, this signing makes no sense.  The already have Omar Vizquel and Mark Kotsay on the bench.  Both bring a veteran and coaches mentality to a relatively young team.  What does Jones bring to the table?  If anything you don’t want your young players emulating him in his current state.  I see this as a “Well he can’t hurt the team right?” or “We could use a power bat off the bench!”  I get that and I also get that for $500K + incentives that he will never hit, it’s potentially not a bad deal.  However when are we just going to give in that his dangerous days as a hitter are all but over.

I was thinking that he would make the team out of training camp and stay the season, but the more I think about it, the more I think, this may be a half season deal, then another half season deal in June for another sucker.  Maybe the Royals or Mariners can use him, better yet, maybe the Braves will let him retire as a Brave.

As far as Jones’ cards go, his autograph can be had for under $5 and his game used cards are now considered commons.  It’s sad that this once incredible player who hit 0.263/51/128 and finished 2nd in MVP voting is now a last man on the bench, who last season hit 0.214/17/43 (didn’t even hit his weight).  You can expect less out of his this season as hopefully he rides off into the sunset.  What are your feelings on him.

So Walter Smith is back to being the worst manager in the world again after some of his strongest critics being somewhat quiet of late.

What’s changed? Is it a case of the voice shouting the loudest is often the only one that’s heard? When we have been playing well of late, no one seems to have been quite as vociferous in their support and praise of the manager. Is this because it is the minimum that we are Rangers supporters have came to expect?

Before I start this discourse on the current state of tenure of Walter Smith, I feel like I should make one thing clear. Last night against Stuttgart was not acceptable. Our European distraction this season has not been acceptable. The managers decisions were not up to scratch for me, however more importantly, the performance of the majority of the players was beyond reproach. We have crashed from Europe with nothing but a whimper – a team that has as much potency and commands as much respect in Europe as Herman van Rompuy.

But can all the blame simply be laid at the door of Walter Smith, Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowell?

Sadly, this time there is a very strong argument that Walter Smith has simply gotten it wrong in Europe this year. The defeats at home this season have been nothing short of embarrassing. An embarrassment we’ve not felt since some of the European forays Smith made towards the end of his first term at the helm of Rangers.

I wrote an blog yesterday saying that second guessing Walter Smith in Europe was as frivolous as trying to spell out words by poking a chopstick into a tin of alphabet spaghetti – something that was proven yet again as Smith deployed a very left-field formation (with Miller on “supporting wide” as I had predicted).

News of the tactical shape was leaked to the papers an hour or so prior to kick off with many dismissing it as tabloid rumour. However the rumours were true, Walter was going to shoehorn his squad into what sounded a very attacking 3-4-3 formation. On seeing it on the park though, it clearly wasn’t that.

In practice it was more like five at the back; quite possibly the most defensively that Walter has asked his troops to play since he came back to the club. Yes, much like the debate that 4-3-3/4-5-1 are actually the same thing – one is the shape when attacking, one when defending – the same is true for 3-4-3 and 5-3-2. Similar to the 4-3-3, the shape changed based on game-circumstance, where the wingers dropped into midfield, the two wide players from the four man midfield ended up dropping back into full back positions.

This drew pressure and allowed territory and space to Stuttgart too deep in our own half.

Our three man defence of Wilson, Weir and McCulloch was not up to the task of playing together in that formation. Despite the experience of Weir, he couldn’t help McCulloch through the ordeal and it seemed that Wilson was the most mature head at the back in many occasions. It was the kind of formation that Basile Boli would have revelled in.

We didn’t really challenge Stuttgart at all.

In all fairness they cruised it and had it not been for the inspired form of Allan McGregor we could have faced a much heftier deficit. McGregor, Wilson and Davis being the only players to come out from the debacle with pass marks. Boyd didn’t have as bad a game as many will have you believe. Yes, he missed that chance, but his all round game up front pretty much as a lone Ranger was passable. He didn’t set the heather on fire but he was not the worst player on the park. He would deserve to play against the Spaniards in the final game based on his performance in my opinion.

But I am talking about the players here. Not the manager. Who is to ‘blame’ for the European misadventure? Walter? The players?

If everything is considered with a sensible head then it’s a combination of both. Walter may have judged his tactics wrong last night, but the players didn’t show the fight and desire to win for Rangers that we have the right to demand from our players. We are not European no-marks like Gonnoreah Urziceni. Not one player pulled themselves and the players around him up over the precipice.

As much as the players all seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet within the squad, there is not the level of commitment that is required to play well and win in Europe. Maybe the players in our squad are simply not good enough to compete and perform at that level? However that is a path that leads back to the manager. It was him that signed them and it’s him and his assistants that train them to mould them into the players that they are now.

So I suppose for me there is no direct blame for our European failure, it is a collective failing and everyone associated with the club has recognised that.

Players and management have been quoted last night and today saying that it wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t, they recognise that and we recognise that. But for me, the doom and gloom merchants need to get a grip of reality. We may have slipped out of Europe, but two of the sides in our group are filled with magnificent players – some of the best of in the world, especially in the case of Sevilla. We are leading the league and are still on course for the other two domestic cups.

Look at it this way. The money in Europe is from the Champions League; we’ve played in the Champions League, we will receive the money. We are all disappointed to not be in the Champions League after the New Year but let’s face it, our squad is not good enough to be there. Apart from the last sixteen, the best we could have hoped for was a Europa Cup campaign which could have stretched our squad to it’s limits.

The league this year is our bread and butter. Simply, we have to win the league this year. Failure is not an option for the future of Rangers (without intervention from a new buyer). We must ensure Champions League football next season for our debt to be better managed. I know I sound like a bit of a drama queen here, but I genuinely believe that it is that important and I think that belief can be backed up when the figures from the latest financial reports are considered. It’s not the case that the club will cease to exist immediately or vanish like Gretna, but everything that we have came to expect and love could potentially begin to be stripped away.

Put quite plainly, if failure to reach the last sixteen of the Champions League or gain entry to the Europa cup means that our players are galvanised and we can go on to win the league then I’d very happily take that. Not every year, but this year I’d take it. Walter Smith knows that he won’t be the manager of Rangers for the next five years, he knows his time at the helm is coming to an end. Without a new owner there will be no fresh exciting young manager to come in. Who else would offer to work on without a contract as Walter has? He is what a lot of what Rangers should always be – proud, loyal, honest and a Trojan of a worker for the interests of the club. People should remember that before castigating him.

There wasn’t a bad word said in his name when he broke the news that the bank were severely influencing the club. He was lauded for protecting the clubs interests and for making the fans aware of a situation that we needed to know about. So let’s maybe cut him some slack.

Last night was a complete shambles, but we always need to look to the positives in life. This season is by no means over yet. We still have some of the most important months in Rangers history ahead of us. What the club, players and management need right now is us to be behind them in what they are doing. I may not like some of the decisions made by management and some of the performances and attitudes of the players, but I will continue to lend them my unwavering support – this season more importantly than most we need to be a collective unit, fighting for the same cause for the best of the institution that means more than anything to us all.

We might have whimpered out of the battle for Europe but the much more important and telling war is yet to be won.

As you can tell by the title, obviously I’m back. Sorry for not posting anything for the last week or so. I’ve had four projects due Thursday, Monday and today and was swamped with them so I didn’t have any time to do anything.

A lot has gone on in Rangerland since my last post which was the game versus the Thrashers on the 12th. The Rangers are 2-2 since that post and have not played very well excluding last night.

The Rangers lost to Washington and Florida, but beat the Senators in an exciting shootout game and beat the Blue Jackets last night 7-4.

Last night, the Rangers got what they have been looking for all year, secondary scoring. The goals last night were scored by Gaborik with 2, Avery with 2, Del Zotto, Gilroy on a breakaway, and Anisimov on a deflection on a shot by Wade Redden.

Now, Henrik Lundqvist has not played as well as he should be the past few games, but he has kept this team in so many games that it is time for the Rangers to re-pay him for what he has done for them the past 4 years.

Coming up, the Rangers play the Panthers, Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh twice to finish out the month. Now, the Rangers should be able to beat the Panthers and the Lightning and hopefully at least get a few points against Pittsburgh. If the Rangers go 2-1-1 in their next four games, all of a sudden they are 14-11-1. Now, that’s not the best record, but you have to start somewhere.

On a seperate note, I know I said that the next set of NHL Power Rankings would be up yesterday, but as I mentioned, I have been very busy, so the Power Rankings will be up next Monday instead.

Also, this may or may not be my last post until Monday as it is Thanksgiving and I may or may not be going to visit relatives, so if I’m not back have a Happy Thanksgiving and LET’S GO RANGERS!!!

Random thoughts:

So, I did manage to stay awake for the rest of last night’s game. Jackets did get another goal to make the score look somewhat respectable, but really, that was not a respectable performance by any stretch of the imagination. They were just bad. But it happens in hockey. It’s a long season, and every team is going to lay the occasional egg. No time to dwell on it, though, as the Jackets play again tonight in Montreal. The Habs are another team behind where they might have been expected to be at this point, but as we’ve seen of late with the Wings, Preds, and Rangers, that’s no reason to take them lightly. Also, this is the only game on the schedule tonight, and is being shown nationally on TSN and RDS in Canada, so no doubt the Canadian-born Jackets will want to put on a good show for their family and friends watching at home.

The Jackets move on to play Ottawa on (American) Thanksgiving, but won’t get to face off against former Jacket Pascal Leclaire. He is out for a month with a broken cheekbone, the result of being hit by the puck while he sat on the bench. I always did like Leclaire, and I still think he has some real talent, but the guy has just been snake-bitten by injuries throughout his entire pro career.

I was intending to take in a film tonight, but given that I’m still a little hobbled by this virus (although greatly improved over yesterday), I’ll be staying in to watch the game. Hoping for a better one than last night. Got myself psyched up for a game in La Belle Province by watching Les Boys III today. Okay, so maybe it didn’t psych me up all that much. It was an okay movie, but about half an hour too long. The first movie in the series was pretty funny and enjoyable, though, and if you haven’t seen it, I recommend searching it out.

Having spent the last couple days at home, in between my hours of judge show watching, I’ve had lots of time to surf the web, and dug out some worthwhile hockey stories:

After all the sturm und drang about Hitchcock’s coaching style after Filatov went back to Russia, there have been a couple of stories in the past couple days that point to Hitchcock having a good effect on young players. NHL.com on Rick Nash and his growth into the captaincy in Columbus and Tom Reed in the Dispatch on the blossoming of Rusty Klesla.

Meanwhile, speaking of the prodigal Filatov, he’s happy to be back with CSKA and playing well. But he’s still saying the right things (publicly at least) about Columbus.

And not Jackets related, but this Buccigross piece at ESPN about Brian Burke’s son Brendan, and his decision to come out publicly, is a must-read. And it speaks well to the character of Enrico Blasi and the program he’s built at Miami, so there’s something in there for the Ohioans.

And it sounds like something interesting might be happening on Judge Mathis, so I leave you with those thoughts. à bientôt.

- Divers objets utilisés pour le jeu (râtelier, stimpaks…)

- Un décors de BAR style post-apocalyptique.

- Des retouches sur les photos de la journée.

This week’s Champions League games will go a long way in deciding the final spots in the knockout stage.  Liverpool need a miracle, namely they need to beat Debrecen and they need some Lyon (who’s already in) to beat Fiorentina.  If Fiorentina wins or draws either of their final two games, Liverpool is out.  The Reds will be without Fernando Torres, who’s still battling a groin injury.  Fellow striker Ryan Babel also picked up an injury in the draw with Manchester City this weekend. Defending champion Barcelona finds themselves in a similar boat.  They need to beat Inter Milan at home to keep their chances at advancing alive.  Barca will likely be without Lionel Messi due to injury.  Several players are also ill with the H1N1 virus.

Yeah, so, I’m sick with the flu and will probably fall asleep before this game is over. But so far it’s been one giant ball of suck. Okay, it was a good game for the first few minutes, when the fourth line contributed a couple goals to make it 2-0 Jackets. But then the wheels fell off in spectacular fashion and it’s pretty much been awful. In fact, I believe watching this game has made my flu symptoms worse. So I’m going to bed.

He says all the right things about doing what it takes to win.  But his actions say something completely different.  He’s really just another suit trying his damnest to crank up the profits at your expense.  Oh, I know he makes a great show of signing “key” free agents but if you look even a tiny bit closer, you can see that its all to create the illusion of being competitive.  That’s the key word here… “illusion”.  He wants to do just enough to convince tens of thousands of people to sign away their life’s earnings for the privilege of watching mediocrity.

If you are a Jets fan, I’m going to have to ask you to clear your mind for a second because you too may have been taken in by his scam.  Forget Thomas Jones and Braylon Edwards and let’s focus on coaching.  Woody bought the team in 2000.  In the 9 years that he has owned the team, he has had 4 coaches…Al Groh, Herm Edwards, Eric Mangini and now Rex Ryan.  That alone speaks volumes about his stewardship.   What do these august gentlemen have in common?  None was a head coach in the NFL before Woody decided that they were ready to don the headset.  If that happens once, maybe twice it’s a fluke.  4 times?  No fluke.  The guy just does not want to spend the cabbage necessary to lure a top name.  Look at last year.  Cowher, Shanahan, Gruden, Holmgren, Billick were all out there.  5 coaches with Super bowl rings.  Who do we get?  another ex-coordinator in Rex Ryan.  Coaching is Exhibit A. 

Exhibit B?  The draft.  Since 2000, the Jets have taken only 2 offensive skill position players in the first round.  Why?  I’m sure there are tons of possible explanations but my mind lands on just one….Woody just doesn’t want to pay the high dollar contract of a top rb, wideout or heaven forbid, a qb.  It took Woody 9 years to finally draft a first round signal caller in a qb driven league and surprise surprise…it just happened to coincide with moving into a brand new stadium in 2010 and the need to shift seat licenses.  Never mind the fact that Sanchez had all of 16 college starts and that Woody had a shot at dozens of better qbs in the last 9 years.  Ribbon cutting was just around the corner and with the ole Gunslinger moseying up to Minneapolis, the Jets needed a new poster boy.  The fallout from Woody’s tightwad ways is the talent level on the team which is incredibly low.  The only skill position players to make the Pro-Bowl during Woody’s reign are the ole Gunslinger, Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Curtis Martin.  Washington was the only player drafted by Woody and he’s a special teamer.

I’ve been writing about my angst for at least 15 years in Jets newsgroups and occasionally on this blog.  No one will argue that they have been one of sports most dysfunctional franchises in the last 40 years.  The Jets previous owner Leon Hess was a whole lot easier for me to accept.  He struck me as a somewhat loveably incompetent millionaire who could have won had his loyalty and sentimentality not gotten in the way.  Woody is something completely different, something far more sinister. Despite his record of futility, I don’t see him as a bumbling billionaire.  I see him as a cool, calculating businessman who will spend the minimum to give the appearance of trying in the interest of commerce.  Earlier this year I railed about what a rip-off I thought the new Yankee stadium was.  One thing makes it easier to swallow.  Without doubt the Yankees are all about winning and spending what it takes to win.  We as fans are subsidizing a dynasty.  That, I can almost take.  What I can’t take is a carpet bagging owner who wants to charge top dollar while not plowing it back into the team.  We’re now stuck with Dolan in hockey and basketball and Woody in football.  If you are a Knick, Rangers or Jets fan, time to start shopping for another team.

Last night,Dick Clark and ABC television hosted the annual American Music Awards, where all kind of crazy and cool happenings went on,and Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert still stood out.

I like it how every year some new act feels the need to shock and push the limits of the public morals to the breaking point, and this year the winner for that category is Adam Lambert.

Adam,the runner-up for last seasons American Idol competition,decided to out do Katy Perry who kissed a girl, or at least had a hit record about it, by kissing a guy on stage.

And, as if that was not enough to get his point across, he then grabbed a male dancer, and had him kiss,…or do something like that, to his crotch. Many guys have done this on stage before,except with women.

I think the best one was that awards show on Spike TV hosted by Jamie Foxx,when he grabbed Halle Berry’s nice behind and laid a good kiss on her…remember that.

…Oh yeah…as usual,like clockwork…Lady Gaga got down!…she is the most interesting performer out there currently, and whenever she performs…I simply can not take my eyes off of her,because of her performances.

She has way more concept than the rest of her fellow performers,and I can tell she is having a big influence on others stage shows. Good going Gaga….

With the acquisition of this card I am now just 2 cards away from completing my Fergie Jenkins player collection.

When I set out to collect every card issued by a major card company from Fergie’s playing days, I never knew how enjoyable this goal would be.  Starting with zero cards, it was fun to shop for my ‘needs’ and along the way my appreciation for Fergie and his stellar pitching career sky rocketed.  This collection has taken longer to complete due to the age and condition of the cards I needed, but this extra time has allowed me more opportunities to learn about and enjoy stories focusing on Fergie.

Today I can proudly say that Ferguson Jenkins is my favorite pitcher of all-time!!!
