She’s Pippi’s lesser-known cousin.

Thanks to Rachel for suggesting Ronia as Name of the Day.

Children’s author Astrid Lindgren had a flair for inventing names, sometimes outlandish ones.  Pippi Longstocking tells us that her full name is Pippilotta Delicatessa Windowshade Mackrelmint Ephraim’s Daughter Longstocking.

Of course, other characters wore evergreen classics like Anna.  Call this one somewhere in between.  Ronia – Ronja in Swedish – sounds like it could be a perfectly plausible appellation for a small blonde child.  With the name currently among the most popular in Denmark’s Faroe Islands, and common throughout Northern Europe, she’s undeniably in use.

But she’s also novel.  Ms. Lindgren snipped Ronja from the name of a lake – Juronjaure.  First published in 1981, Ronja Rövardotter is the story of a princess amongst thieves, heir apparent to lead her father’s band of grifters.  Ronja plays Juliet to the son of a rival family.  But unlike Shakespeare, Lindgren dishes up a happy ending.  After some suffering and a dash of running away, the feuding families reconcile.

The story has been oft-adapted for film, and in one American version, Ronja became Kirsty.  But for the most part, Ronia has been viewed as a perfectly accessible choice.

There are three other possible sources for the name:

• The Hebrew Ronia relates to the word for song.  (Think of starbaby Max Liron’s middle.)  Ron, Roni, Ronit and Roniya are all other related names;
• Especially when spelled Ronya, she may be a Russian diminutive for any name containing a -ron.  (Think of Anya or Katya.)  In this case, the meaning links back to the original source name – which makes it nearly impossible to determine;
• But in the US, Ronia is probably most often used as a feminine form of Ronald.  While she’s never appeared in the US Top 1000, plenty of Ron- variants have, including Ronnie, Rona and Ronna.  And Ronia can be found in nineteenth century census records – occasionally paired with a conventionally Jewish surname, but more often not.  Ronald might be out of vogue in 2009, but he was a Top Ten pick in the 1930s and 40s, and a Top 100 choice much longer. 

History aside, how would Ronia wear on a girl born today?  She actually shares a pronunciation with the Arabic Rania – rhan YAH - lending her a certain cross-cultural currency.  Rania is also worn by the current Queen of Jordan, raising her profile.

Ronia feels stuck in fashion limbo – but that’s not always a bad thing.  If she’s slightly out of step with current trends, then she’s unlikely to be the next Matilda – unless, of course, Lindgren’s novel leads to Hollywood.  In that case, her global roots and distinctive sound could be the next big thing.

Gibt es wirklich eine moralische Gleichwertigkeit zwischen der Berliner Mauer und dem israelischen Sicherheitszaun? Steve Bell vom Guardian denkt offensichtlich so:

Leider steht er damit nicht alleine da. HonestReporting Canada sprach bereits ein ähnliches Beispiel bei CBC an. Und Jordaniens Königin Rania schreibt in der Huffington Post:

Heute feiern wir den Fall der Berliner Mauer; nächstes Jahr feiern wir das Ende der Apartheid in Südafrika. Diese zwei Ereignisse lehrten uns, dass dann, wenn Barrieren beseitigt werden – ob physische Barrieren, gesetzliche Barrieren oder die Mauern, die die Menschen in ihren Herzen errichtet haben – die Basis gelegt wird für Fortschritt, Frieden und Entwicklung für beide Seiten. Die Menschen in meiner Region sehnen sich genauso sehr nach Gerechtigkeit und Versöhnung.

Wie kann man diese Jubiläen besser würdigen als durch das Niederreißen einer weiteren Mauer?

Doch Eldad Beck erklärt, warum die Vergleiche von Bell, CBC und der Königin völlig daneben sind:

Abgesehen von manchen optischen Ähnlichkeiten gibt es keinen Zusammenhang zwischen Berliner Mauer und Sicherheitszaun.

Die Berliner Mauer trennte Mitglieder derselben Nation voneinander, die in der einen oder anderen Weise nach Wiedervereinigung strebten. Auf der anderen Seite markiert der Sicherheitszaun gewissermaßen eine zukünftige Grenze zwischen zwei Nationen, die nicht in einem Staat zusammenleben wollen, sondern lieber ihr geteiltes Land in zwei verschiedene Staaten aufteilen wollen.

Es überrasch doch sehr, dass ausgerechnet diejenigen, die sich lange Zeit für einen eigenen palästinensischen Staat stark gemacht hatten, nun die Entfernung des Sicherheitszaunes fordern. Schließlich brachte dieser Zaun die Palästinenser näher an eine geographische und politische Teilung, die als Basis für ein eigenes politisches Staatswesen dienen würde.

Vorwürfe bezüglich des „Apartheidszaunes“ verdecken die wahren Motive der Palästinenser und ihrer Unterstützer, die an einer Aufteilung des Landes und Koexistenz neben Israel nicht interessiert sind; vielmehr denken sie an eine Übernahme des gesamten Landes.

Seien wir ehrlich, als Schutz vor Terror funktioniert die Grenzanlage, aber legen Sie sich nicht fest. Ramadan Shalah, Führer des Islamic Jihad, hat verstanden.

Beck verweist noch auf eine andere Barriere, die nur die arabische Welt einreißen kann:

Es gibt eine andere Mauer in Nahost, deren Existenz die Protestler am Sicherheitszaun nicht wahrnehmen wollen, geschweige denn dagegen angehen, obwohl es sich hier um die Mauer handelt, die den Konflikt zwischen Juden und Arabern endlos fortschreibt: Die Mauer des Boykotts und Isolation, aufgerichtet von der muslimischen Welt gegen Israel seit seiner Staatsgründung….

Solange diese Wand existiert, werden beide Seiten nicht in der Lage sein, sich besser kennenzulernen, und es wäre unmöglich, Vorurteilen zu begegnen, die den Konflikt anheizen. Die „Mauer in Nahost“ wurde lange vor dem Sicherheitszaun aufgerichtet und sie ist hauptverantwortlich für die Existenz des Sicherheitszauns.

Ich frage mich, ob Bell, CBC und Königin Rania wissen, dass der 9. November kein deutscher Nationalfeiertag ist: die Times of London hat dankenswerterweise erwähnt, dass dies auch der Gedenktag zur Reichspogromnacht ist.

אלפי בחורי-הישיבות מישראל שהגיעו לחצרות-קודשנו לרגל חודש-החגים יוצאים מידי יום שישי וערבי חג ל’מבצע תפילין’ ברחבי העיר ניו-יורק. אחד הבחורים, שניאור.מ המתגורר בכפר-חב”ד, יצא ל’מבצע תפילין’ באחד מהרחובות הסואנים במנהטן.

“במהלך ה’מבצע תפילין’, ניגש אלינו אדם שלצווארו צלב גדול, ואיחל לנו חג-שמח”, סיפר הבחור לכתב COL. “התחלתי לדבר איתו והוא סיפר שהוא ‘חצי יהודי’, מכיוון שאימא שלו יהודיה”. כידוע, על-פי ההלכה היהודית, אדם שאימו יהודיה – נחשב יהודי לכל דבר ועניין.

והבחור ממשיך לספר: “אמרתי לו שהוא נחשב ליהודי והלם היה ניכר על פניו. נתתי לו את תמונתו של הרבי וסיפרתי לו בקצרה על הרבי ועל-כך שאנחנו נמצאים כאן בשליחות שלו. עוד אמרתי, כי הרבי רצה שכל יהודי יניח תפילין. בתום הדברים, הסכים האיש להפשיל את שרוולו ולהניח תפילין”.

באותם רגעים, לכאורה די שגרתיים, החלו מאות אנשים להתגודד סביב הדוכן ולצלם את האיש עם מצלמות ומכשירים סלולריים.

“כל הרחוב היה חסום ולא הבנתי על-מה המהומה”, סיפר הבחור ל-COL. בסיום הנחת התפילין, האיש גילה עוד קצת התעניינות בנושא הדת ואף ביקש לקחת את הכיפה. “יש לי הופעה בישראל בקרוב”, אמר.

רק לאחר שהאיש הלך, ניגש הבחור לאחד האנשים מתוך המאות שגדשו את האיזור, ושאל אותו על מה המהומה. אז, התברר, כי מדובר בפול דייויד היוסון, הידוע בכינויו בונו והוא משמש כסולן להקת רוק האירית U2 – להקה ענקית לה מליוני מעריצים.

יש לציין, כי לפני שנתיים נבחר האיש לאיש השנה על-ידי המגזין הפופולרי “טיים” היוצא-לאור בארצות-הברית.

I recently wrote a Facebook status about how tired I am of seeing perfect women everywhere. I got several replies telling me I had nothing to worry about. That’s not the point: these goddess women are still EVERYWHERE.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy looking at them: I, also, am mesmerized by their beauty. What bothers me is that I feel that becoming flawless or even reaching their level is somehow unattainable.

Nevertheless, these women give me inspiration. For this reason, I decided to dedicate this portion of my blog to women who are more beautiful than I probably ever will be.

The first one I can think of is French actress Audrey Tautou. I watched one “Hors de Prix” last night and I was simply blown away by how gorgeous this woman is.

Of course, there’s also Angelina Jolie. I don’t always find her beautiful, but in her movie Beyond Borders (great movie by the way).

Then, there’s Alice Taglioni. She plays a model in the movie “La Doublure” with one of my personal favorites; Gad El Maleh

Let’s not forget my brother’s crush (whose beauty I can’t deny), Jessica Alba

Well, enough of this for today. I’m starting to feel a bit too humbled by these incredible women.  Maybe I’ll continue on this topic later.

Innan Maldiverna sjunker i det varma havet – om någon generation – så kan det vara läge att inspektera ögruppen. På vackra ön Rania på Maldiverna ingår bland annat egen butler, kockar, dykinstruktör, spaterapeuter och en gigantisk lyxbåt med kapten och besättning. Priset?

Queen Rania of Jordan’s Facebook page describes her as “a mother; a wife; a boss; an advocate; a humanitarian; a queen.”  She is also extremely elegant and has an amazing wardrobe!  Check out her Facebook page to see several photos of her participating in her official duties.  Her website also has lots of information about her work as a humanitarian and an advocate for women and children in Jordan and around the world.

Qualcuno ha scritto: “Non credo che esista un paese al mondo dove qualcuno può scrivere su un sito ‘Uccidiamo il premier’.”

Beh, quanto a questo, sono forse due o tre i Paesi al mondo che hanno come “Premier” un soggetto osceno che si permette di dire “Fare il Premier mi fa schifo” (Al Berluskone 18 Marzo 2009) ma che per ben noti motivi giudiziari e d’affari personali resta ben appiccicato alla poltrona, sostenuto per giunta da una minoranza di elettori.
Infatti, se avesse ottenuto la maggioranza dei voti ancora si potrebbe dire “ad ogni Popolo il Premier che si merita”, ma qui siamo all’assurdo che quello sta a Palazzo Chigi grazie ad una Legge elettorale che regala la maggioranza assoluta in Parlamento alla coalizione che ha una maggioranza relativa (45%) e nella quale le scelte delle candidature sono già state fatte a prescindere dalla volontà popolare.
Un autentico Golpe subdolo!
In queste condizioni è inevitabile che poi si finisca con l’estremizzare e, estremo x estremo x 3,14, finisce che, oltre al responsabile principale, ci vanno di mezzo tutti quelli che emanano anche un minimo di fumus dittatorio (le Rivoluzioni popolari insegnano).
Se Al Berluskone si dimettesse, come farebbe chiunque avesse un poco di dignità, non avremmo ’sti problemi con FaceBook, ma quello ha ben altro per la testa, anche se si sta preparando comode scappatoie con i Tunisini e con Putin nell’eventualità di beccarsi una pioggia di sesterzi in testa al posto delle monetine che toccarono a Craxi.

Si sta preparando un futuro nella Dacia di Putin con l’assistenza velata di D’Alema e di Fini?! E va beh, basta che se ne vada fuori dai coglioni una volta per tutte.

Una nota positiva: ci ha evitato un’ulteriore figuraccia stando ben lontano dai reali di Giordania. Vi figurate questo nano burino sessuomane che fa lo scemo con la bella Rania e questa che, anzi che tenerlo alla larga come ha fatto Michelle Obama, magari gli molla un ben meritato sganassone arabo?!

Non capita tutti i giorni che una regina passeggi a piedi per Milano e si fermi al bar a bere un cappuccino, come una turista qualsiasi. Lo ha fatto giovedì mattina Rania di Giordania, a Milano con re Abdallah II per partecipare al Business Forum Giordania-Italia a Palazzo Mezzanotte.

La regina Rania, uscita un po’ in anticipo dal meeting, ha voluto raggiungere a piedi via Dante, nel cuore della città, per poi sedersi ai tavolini di un bar a bere un cappuccino e un bicchiere d’acqua minerale. Pare che la regina abbia deciso all’improvviso questo fuori programma, che ha colto di sorpresa anche il suo servizio d’ordine.

Uscendo da palazzo Mezzanotte non è voluta salire sull’auto che l’attendeva, ma si è messa camminare a piedi dirigendosi verso via Dante. Poi, scelto il Caffè Sforzesco, è entrata e si è seduta a un tavolino tra gli altri avventori a bere un cappuccino e un’acqua minerale. La regina è apparsa sorridente, ha sorriso ai fotografi e dopo una ventina di minuti è tornata indietro salendo sull’auto del corteo reale.

Il motivo del «fuori programma» della regina in via Dante era forse, oltre il desiderio di fare una passeggiata, anche quallo di dare un’occhiata ai pannelli, sistemati lungo la strada, della mostra «Giordania svelata». Organizzata con il patrocinio dei reali giordani, la mostra consiste in una serie di gigantografie sulla Giordania, come la necropoli di Petra, una foto della riserva naturale di Dana, un cortile del forte romano a Qasr Al Azraq. La mostra resterà aperta fino al 31 ottobre.

Roma è «una creatura di una bellezza e di una personalità uniche, eterna e, oh, così romantica». È entusiasta la regina Rania di Giordania nel descrivere, stamattina su Twitter, le sue impressioni sulla Capitale, dove è arrivata ieri sera con il marito re Abdallah per una visita ufficiale.

«Ammiro la reticenza di Roma nell’abbandonare tanto di sé in favore dei moderni confort», scrive la regina in un altro post sul popolare social network. I sovrani giordani sono martedì ospiti a colazione del presidente Giorgio Napolitano e della signora Clio.

Subito dopo re Abdallah incontra i presidenti del Senato Renato Schifani e della Camera Gianfranco Fini, mentre Rania visita la Galleria Borghese accompagnata dal ministro dei Beni Culturali Sandro Bondi. Una cena al Quirinale conclude la giornata romana della coppia reale che resta nella Capitale fino a giovedì.

Il presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano ha accolto con gli onori solenni il re di Giordania, Abdallah, che è giunto al Quirinale insieme alla regina Rania. Napolitano e la signora Clio hanno atteso gli ospiti nel Cortile d’onore. La regina è andata con la signora Clio che l’ha accompagnata a vistare le Sale storiche. Re Abdallah ha ascoltato gli inni nazionali.

Poi insieme hanno passato in rassegna il picchetto d’onore. L’auto reale è stata scortata nell’ultimo tratto da uno squadrone di corazzieri a cavallo. Dopo gli onori militari, Napolitano e il sovrano hascemita hanno raggiunto il piano nobile dove è avvenuta la presentazione delle delegazioni. Quindi i due capi di Stato si sono riuniti a colloquio nello Studio alla Vetrata.

Si è presentata così in Campidoglio mercoledì mattina la regina Rania di Giordania in visita ufficiale a Roma con il marito il re Abdallah II

I reali consorti sono stati ricevuti dal sindaco di Roma Gianni Alemanno e dalla first lady. Una breve visita in Campidoglio e poi incontro con stampa e televisioni. Nel corso dell’incontro c’è stato uno scambio di doni. Isabella Rauti ha donato alla regina Rania di Giordania due gioielli firmati Bulgari a sostegno della campagna «Riscriviamo il futuro- Save the Children». Un anello e un ciondolo in argento con inciso all’interno il logo di Save the Children. Si tratta di una campagna che la storica maison di gioielli romana sostiene da tempo, che mira a garantire attraverso l’educazione e la formazione un futuro migliore a milioni di bambini vittime di guerre e conflitti.

Il sindaco di Roma ha invece offerto al re Abdallah di Giordania la lupa in bronzo capitolina cesellata a mano. I reali di Giordania hanno invece portato al sindaco di Roma e alla first lady, Isabella Rauti un cofanetto d’argento, intarsiato a mano con uno «spaccato» di mosaico antico ed incise le firme dei due sovrani del regno hascemita. In Campidoglio alla presentazione della campagna 1Goal: Education for All

Il presidente della Camera dei deputati, Gianfranco Fini, ha consegnato alla regina Rania Al Abdullah di Giordania il premio internazionale «Marisa Bellisario». La cerimonia ha avuto luogo a Montecitorio, nella Sala della Lupa. È intervenuta Lella Golfo, presidente della Fondazione Bellisario.

Il presidente della Repubblica italiana, Giorgio Napolitano, e il ee del Regno Hashemita di Giordania, Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein, hanno inaugurato la mostra «Giordania: crocevia di popoli e di culture» ospitata al Palazzo del Quirinale. L’esposizione, allestita nella Sala delle Bandiere del Palazzo, sarà aperta al pubblico da venerdì a domenica fino al 31 gennaio 2010
