The known devil is always better than the unknown devil.

I don’t agree with Mahinda’s politics. I don’t agree with how he is spending public money, I don’t agree with the manner in which he ended the war, I don’t agree on how he tends to become big brother at times and crawl into our lives, I don’t agree with the subsidy driven economic policies that he has, I don’t agree with how he manages the Government owned media, and I completely disagree with the pro-Sinhala Buddhist nationalistic approach that he takes to almost everything.

Having said that, I’m going to vote for him.

Fonseka came into the picture, because the media and the spin doctors made him to be who he now is. And also because he has no other choice. For a person who had power and perks, settling down to a life without them would be quite difficult. Fonseka can’t go down the usual path followed by commanders of the armed forces and take up an Embassy or a High Commission somewhere, as he won’t be able to get a “good” country because of his human rights record.

Ranil et al out of desperation turns to the only person they can think of in a hurry, and Fonseka agrees. Here is a person who came into the sphere of active politics out of nowhere, and now all the people in the anti-MR bandwagon are ready to go cast their votes for him. A person who said that Sri Lanka belongs to the Sinhala people, and that minorities shouldn’t demand undue things, now gets the support of Mano Ganeshan, who criticized Fonseka vehemently for that. Mangala, who said that Fonseka was not even qualified to lead the Salvation Army, is now backing Fonseka fully.

On the other hand, the JHU who sang praise to Fonseka at the height of the war, is now singing a different tune. MR himself, who said that Fonseka was a tireless force in eliminating the LTTE, almost calls Fonseka a traitor. And the list goes on.

For both MR and Fonseka, it’s a struggle for power. That is why I’m voting for MR at the coming presidential elections, however much I hate him.

Because to me, the known devil is better than the unknown devil.

President Rajapaksa is expected back tomorrow morning at “Temple Trees” from his official Vietnam tour. He is expected to meet Monday evening with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) trade union leaders in resolving their salary issue which prompted them to go on a “work to rule” from Thursday last week. This created heavy panic buying of fuel and much chaos in commuting. If this trade union demand of the CPC employees is not met adequately (even if it is met, for that matter) other trade unions are threatening trade union action in very sensitive areas like electricity, ports and telecommunications.

Everything depends on President Rajapaksa right now. What he says and does would see a spate of changes in most things “Sri Lankan”.  Even the fate of the JVP initiated, UNP led national front’s latest pet, the “common” presidential candidate.

President Rajapaksa is expected to make a decision on the next elections in a few days, after his arrival. Perhaps, in a few weeks. He is expected to declare a presidential election, chopping off 02 years from his first term as president. Insiders, real insiders who have unrestricted access to his family dinners and breakfasts claim, the 02 year issue would be dealt with once the presidential election is over. Thus it is implied that the Rajapaksas have already decided “they” would win the next presidential election on their own conditions, what ever the Opposition feel or do about it.

The question that would then arise is, how certain would that be, if a broad Opposition alliance that includes the UNP, the JVP, SLFP-M Wing and other little rag tag groups and parties come up with the war hero, Fonseka, as the common opposition candidate ?

That too, that is Sarath F as the common candidate of the opposition could also be decided by President Rajapaksa. Perhaps it is reason why Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Gen Fonseka to date has not made any comment what so ever on his speculated candidature, while allowing others to do the talking.

The legal responsibility of such high standing officials in the State, does not allow them to vacate their positions as and when they want. That holds more water, with the armed forces. This legal restriction has logic, in not allowing any such highly responsible positions to fall vacant without prior arrangement. Here lies the catch, President Rajapaksa could play to his absolute advantage.

Fonseka was shifted to the position of CDS before his service extension as Army Commander expired and he thus has time till 2009 December 18, for his retirement. President Rajapaksa will be qualified to go for the next presidential election any day after 2009 November 17, when he completes 04 years in office. Thus, it gives President Rajapaksa 30 days from his qualifying date of 17 November, to checkmate the Opposition Common candidate. If President Rajapaksa decides to have the nomination day for the next presidency fixed any time within those 30 days, it would technically leave the Opposition’s common candidate completely out of the scene.

The trap this common candidate has fallen to is that, he can not even retire prior to his official retirement date, unless the Commanding Chief of the Armed Forces, who is the President, accepts such retirement. Hence, President Rajapaksa has the discretion in his hand in keeping the CDS in service until 18 December, even if he tenders his retirement papers prematurely.

What then would the Opposition’s dilemma be ? They could try legal interpretations to say that the CDS position was created by parliament on an act that provides final decision making powers to the Secretary Defense and therefore the CDS position does not have such restrictions on responsibility. Yet, that would be a long drawn out battle in the Courts that may not give enough time to submit nominations, as the State could have a restrictive order served, till the case is closed and the case could be any way dragged out for over a month.

The opposition alliance and the JVP, would therefore have to find a fall back position. The other Sarath seems to be out of favour by now. He is any way expected to be investigated by the Bribery Commission and that may get accelerated, if any wind carries his name around.

What it clearly means is, the JVP is in the know of this catch 22 situ and have already decided to go on a “boycott the presidential elections” slogan. Their star theoretical orator, Anura Kumar Dissanayake has said they are in the process of forming an alternate front to demand the abolishing of the presidency. This has no ambiguity in that it could be turned into a boycott campaign, when President Rajapaksa declares his presidential election.

Will the UNP follow the same line ? They’ve got nothing to lose by joining in. They would any way lose the presidential elections, with no credible candidate and no credible programme in hand to be campaigned for. For now, the tide is for the Rajapaksas and against the general public. That, with the consensus of the Southern constituency, of course.

It would only be a matter of checking how many countries are still below us, in the “Failed State” index.

තවද එක් තුටු විය හැකි කරුණක් ඇත.එනම් වීරවංශ මහතාගේ ලාබ ප්‍රයෝජන පක්ෂය ඇතුගෑවී ගොස් තිබීමයි.එය පහත ඇති විනී හෙට්ටිගොඩ මහතාගේ කාටූනයෙන් මනාව ඔප්පු වන අතර ප්‍රධාන මාතෘකාව වන “දිනන්නට නම්” වෙත අවසාන වශයෙන් පැමිනෙමු.අප “දිනන්නට නම්” පමනක් නොව “දිනා වැඩ කිරීමට නම්” කල යුතු වන්නේ සාමූහිකත්වය ඇති කිරීම හාවිශ්වාසය ඇතිකිරීමයි.මහත්මා දේශපාලනයට කදිම චරිතයක් වන් රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ මහතා බොහෝ දෙනෙක් පවසන පරිදි ලංකාවේ දේශපාලනයට ඔබින්නේ නැතිලු.මන්ද ලක්දිව මහත්මා දේශපාලනයක් නොපවතින බැවිනි.අනෙක් කරුණ නම් කට පරෙස්සම් කරගැනීමයි.මන්ද වරදින වචන ඇල්ලීමට රජය මාධ්‍ය යොදවා තිබීමයි.එසේ වැරදි රජය පාර්ශවයෙන් සොයන්නේ නම් එමට ඇත.ලඟම උදාහරණය රාජිත සේනාරත්න මහතා දැනට දිනකට හෝ දෙකකට පෙර ජාතික රූපවාහිනිය ඔස්සේ කල ප්‍රකාශයකි.එන ලංකාවේ මිනිස්සුන්ට වීජ ගණිතය නොතේරෙන බවත් කියන දෙයක් ගොඩේ විදිහට කිව යුතු බවත්ය.එම නිසා මුව රැලේ නායකායා වන අං තට්ටුව ඇති මුවාමුවාට වුවද නරියාගේ ගොදුර වීමට සිදුවේ.එමනිසා මතුවට සශ්‍රීක අනාගතයක අරමුණ සිත් තබාගෙන වාසනාව අසලට එනවිට එය බාරගැනීමට සූදානම් වී සිටින්නැයි ඉල්ලමින් සමුගනිමි.අප පක්ෂයට ජය නියතය.ඔබටද සදා ජය !!!

Where the LTTE went wrong was when they became too fucked up with their own obstinacy in 2004. What Ranil Wickramasinghe brought forward in 2004 was the most feasible devolution package, where all parties could have negotiated for power.

This was a solution in which the Tamil representatives could bargain for a “honourable peace”. But, the LTTE, too arrogant of itself, went on the offensive and that was their fatal turn to Waterloo.

If Prabaharan cites the killing of Gandhi as the worst mistake they made, then surely, their arrogant rejection of Ranil’s devolution package can be rated along the same lines.

Mahinda and Ranil — Ts about timing and luck, matey!

When Mahinda Rajapaksha declared war on the LTTE it was a gamble. Unlike as it is so grossly mis-exaggerated today by the media, Mahinda’s first option was not a military offensive. In fact, his initial move was to hit the tables for negotiation. But, the LTTE — again — pissed him off that Mahinda was forced to declare war.

Was the Maavilaru sluice forced in six months from the day it actually was forced…..then, the result of things would / could have been very different.

The LTTE lost its head and missed a card or two. As a result their entire card-palace folded within four years. There were two gross misjudgments. The worst was on the part of the LTTE. They misjudged Mahinda’s mileage and his capabilities. This under-rating was detrimental for them, as Mahinda managed to forge around him a pro-war league and press forward for a military triumph amidst hardcore international pressure.

The second misjudgment, again on the part of the LTTE, was their over-estimate of their political position as of 2004. The LTTE had become “equal partners” of a bargain thanks to the shrewd political mind of Ranil Wickramasinghe. He was luring the LTTE into a democratic framework of devolution —- which would have been the only acceptable ultimate reconciliation.

When cake was offered in 2004, they wanted the bakery instead. In the process, the Tamil people have now lost the capacity to bargain for power.

But, the LTTE wanted it the hard way. And lost it all.

We will realize in the future that the only palatable and reasonable solution to the political crises among the ethnicities is Ranil’s scheme of 2004. What Mahinda or whoever that may come to power can propose / will propose is the same formula. The proposal of the devolution package and its opposition has always nested in oratory and rhetoric.

Those who orchestered the proposals and those who rejected em always depended on the definition of the political concepts involved — but, this was essentially done by sweetly making the other sound sour.

The same scemes would be laid out in the future. The only difference this time around would be that the Tamil community of the North and East will not have the same “negotiating power” / “capacity to bargain” as it did in 2004. The elimination of the LTTE leaves the doors open for a perfect hegemony — as there is no need for a dialogue or devolution. Rather, what has happened now is that all power has been concentrated into the scales of the Central Government, which, if it walks along the extremist past of a Sinhala nationalist regime, would fuck things up pretty badly.

Potentially, the present government has all the necessary tools to fuck things up. They consist of hardcore extrimist groups such as the JHU and the NFF. The speeches made on Parliament grounds saw Patali Champika and Wimal Weerawansa go all guns blazing in dishing out a rich dose of nationalist verbiage.

This is how it stands —- as long as there is no empowerment of the Northern and Eastern Tamil peoples the ethnic tension that flared up with the Vaddukodai Resolution of 76 would be a flint in a burnt out hearth. In other words, a Federalist / near-Federalist model should come into play in order to decisively calm out the political crisis.

Yet, the “federalist concept”, too, is the hated bitter pill of the extremist groups that have opposed the UNP package over the past 6 years. The Wimals and the Ranawakas have, in fact, cast their lot with the current head of state owing to the latter being anti-federalist.

The writer fears that the Sinhala extremist groups may start imitating the movie in their response to the future of the crisis.

So, it’s again up to the rhetoric and the power of persuasion to see what numbers can be won, what opinions could be bent, what ways there are to re-interpret what has already been re-interpreted 100 times over etc etc. The elated “South” — can the government succeed in proving to them (in case of a power devolution) that this is not, in fact, devolution, but a “distribution of power within a [add some complicated term here] that does not [add another complex term here]….”. While doing so, can the government still win the support of the extremist groups? Simultaneously, can the government wade off the opposition who will dig holes in their work cite mud?

Then, on the longer run, would the Tamil speaking people “accept” to be a part of the “solution” / hegemony that will ensue?

Clearly, if there’s one guy who must be cursing, it is Ranil Wickramasinghe. He must be cursing Prabhaharan for being arrogant and for walking away in 2004. That rejection not only has resulted in the officially-stated death of Prabha….but, it has also thrown Ranil miles off what would have otherwise been his “triumphant plum” of his political career. If, indeed, Mahinda Rajapaksha lays out the 2004 power devolution scheme, Ranil would be the creatives guy of this ad firm, whose idea was stolen by the guy next table, re-wrapped and sold for big bucks.

මාතෘකාවක් වී ඇතැයි කියන්නේ 2005 ජනාධිපතිවරණයේ දී රනිල් පරද්දන්න ප්රභාකරන් ගත්ත තීරණයයි. “එතැන ලොකු වැරැද්දක් කර ගත්තා නේද…?” සමහරු එහෙම අහද්දී කොටි ජාලයට සමීප සම්බන්ධකම් ඇති අය ඉදිරිපත් කරනවාය කියන්නේ වෙන විග්රහයකි. “නැහැ. රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ දිනුවා නම් කරුණා වගේ තවත් අය ප්රභාකරන්ගෙන් කැඩෙනවා. අපේ සංවිධානය සී සී කඩ යනවා. අද දරුණු පරාජය අමුවේත් ප්රභාකරන් එක්ක නායකයෝ එකට ඉන්නවා. පිටරට ඉන්න අප හැමෝම එකට ඉන්නවා. හෙට ප්රභාකරන් මැරුණත් අපි සංවිධානය නැති කරන්න දෙන්නේ නැහැ. ප්රභාකරන්ගේ ලේ අපිට සංවිධානය ඉස්සරහට ගෙන යන්න ශක්තියක්. වැටුණු සංවිධානයට ඒකෙන් ඔක්සිජන් ලැබෙනවා. හැබැයි රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ දිනල සංවිධානය දෙකට තුනට බෙදිල විනාශ වුණා නම් ආපසු ගොඩගන්න බැහැ. අද අපිට නැතිවෙලා තියෙන්නේ භූමිය. අපේ නායකයෝ කීප දෙනෙක් කාඩර්ස්ලා නැති වෙලා තියෙනවා. ඒත් අපේ මතය නැති වෙලා නැහැ. සටන නැතිවෙලා නැහැ. රනිල් දිනල සාමය බෙදාගන්න බැරිව අපේ නායකයන් කුළල් කා ගන්න ගත්තා නම් අපිට අපේ මතයයි සටනයි දෙකම නැතිවෙනවා. එහෙම වුණා නම් අපිට තමිල්නාඩුව අවුස්සන්න පුළුවන්ද? ලෝකය මේ විදිහට අවුස්සන්න පුළුවන්ද? එහෙම වුණා නම් ලෝකයම ඉන්නේ රනිල් එක්ක…” ඒ ඔවුන්ගේ විග්රහයය. “ඒක හරි හතර බීරි කතාවක්නේ. සටන් විරාමයෙන් මේ රට දෙකට කඩල තිබුණ කියලනේ ආණ්ඩුව කියන්නේ. රනිල් දිනුවා නම් අදටත් රට දෙකට වෙලානේ. ඉතින් ඒකනේ ප්රභාකරන්ට ඕන. රනිල් දිනුවා නම් ප්රභාකරන්ට මේ විදියට වන්නියේ හැංගිලා මර බයේ දුක් විඳින්න වෙනවායැ…” අර විග්රහය ගැන කිව්වාම යුරෝපයේ පදිංචි සිංහලයෙක් කියා තිබුණේ ඔවැනි කථාවකි. ඇත්තටම බැලූ බැල්මට ඒ කතාව පේන්නේ හරි වගේය. හැබැයි ප්රභාකරන් අදටත් හිතන්නේ ඔහු විනාශ කළේ රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ කියලාය. අරගෙන කියවන්න මෙන්න මේ පොත “ඇයි එහෙම හිතන්නේ” රනිල් කියන්නේ කවුද කියලා මේ රටේ සිංහල මිනිස්සු තියා යූ.ඇන්.පී. කාරයන්වත් නොදන්නවා වුණාට ප්රභාකරන් හොඳ හැටි දනී. “රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ සාම වෙස් මූණ දමාගත්තෙත් පස්සෙනේ. අපි එයා දන්නේ 1990 ප්රේමදාස එක්ක සාකච්ඡා කරන කාලෙ ඉඳන්. ප්රේමදාස ඝාතනය වෙලා 1993 රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ අගමැති වුණ හැටියෙම හමුදාවේ ලොකු ප්රතිසංවිධානයක් කළා. ඒක කළේ රනිල්. එහෙම කළේ නැගෙනහිර මුදවාගෙන යාපනය අල්ලා ගන්න. ඊට කලින් යූ.එන්.පී. ආණ්ඩුව වැටුණා. පොදු පෙරමුණ ඇවිත් ඒකේ ප්රයෝජන ගත්තා…” මේ කොටි න්යායාචාර්ය බාලසිංහම් 2005 නොවැම්බර් 28 ලන්ඩනයේ දී රනිල් පරද්දන්න ප්රභාකරන් තීරණය කළේ ඇයිද යන්න හේතු සාධක සහිතව ඔප්පු කරමින් කළ දේශනයෙන් උපුටාගත්තකි. බාලසිංහම් කී කතාව හරිය. ඔහු කී කතාව හරි යැයි කීවේ ප්රකට ආරක්ෂක විශ්ලේෂකයෙකි. රාත්රී මෙහෙයුම් සහ රාත්රියේ එල්ල වන ප්රහාර සඳහා විශේෂ පුහුණුවක් ලබා දීම, කුඩා කණ්ඩායම් වශයෙන් ගෙන ප්රහාරක ඒකක පුහුණු කිරීම, දුරදිග විහිදුම් බළකායක් පුහුණු කිරීම, සාමාන්ය හමුදා භටයන් පුහුණු කාලය සති ජනාධිපතිවරණයෙන් රනිල් පරාජය කළාට පසු හැම මහ විරු දින කතාවකදීම ප්රභාකරන් රනිල් පරද්දන්න තමන් ගත් තීරණය හරි යැයි දමිල ජනතාව ඉදිරියේ සාධාරණීකරණය කරන්නේ සටන් විරාමය රනිල් හමුදාව ශක්තිමත් කිරීමට ප්රයෝජනයට ගත්තා යැයි චෝදනා කරමින් ය. පරාජය හමුවේ ඇද වැටී මහවිරු දින කතාව කළ 2008 දීත් ඔහු එය මතක් කරන්නේ තමන් විනාශ කළේ රනිල් බවත්, ඔහුට සමාව නොදෙන ලෙසත් දමිළ ජනතාවට මතක් කර දෙමිනි. සටන් විරාම කාලය තුල රනිල් හමුදාව ශක්තිමත් කළා යැයි ප්රභාකරන් නගන චෝදනාව හරිය. රනිල් 2001 ආණ්ඩුව භාර ගන්නා විට හමුදාවේ තත්ත්වය හිටපු ආරක්ෂක ලේකම් ඔස්ටින් ප්රනාන්දු ඔහුගේ “මයි බේලි ඊස් වයිට්” ග්රන්ථයේ සඳහන් කරන්නේ මෙසේය. “මා ආරක්ෂක අමාත්යාංශය භාර ගන්නා විට හමුදාවේ පුහුණුවීම් සඳහා වෙඩි තියන්න උණ්ඩවත් නිතිබූ බව වත්මන් හමුදාපති සරත් ෆොන්සේකා සාක්ෂි දරනු ඇත. ඔහුත් දියතලාවේ පුහුණු මධ්යස්ථානයේ නිළධාරීනුත් නොකඩවා කළ ඉල්ලීමකට අනුව පළමුව උණ්ඩ මුලදී ගැනීමට මම කටයුතු කළෙමි…” ඔස්ටින් ප්රනාන්දු පිට – 143 එපමණක් නොව උතුරු – නැගෙනහිර තුනෙන් දෙකක් පමණ වූ භූමිය එල්.ටී.ටී.ඊ ය අල්ලාගෙන හමුදාව සිටියේ යාපනය ඇතුළු ප්රදේශ කිහිපයක් පමණී. රනිල් අත්සන් කළ එකකි. ඔවුන් එය සකස් කළේ සටන් විරාම ගිවිසුම චන්ද්රිකා සහ කදිරගාමර් රනිල් බලයට ඒමට පෙර සකස් කළේ ආර්ථිකය බිංදුවට ගොස් යුද්ධ කරන්න සල්ලි නැතිකමත්, කොයි මොහොතේ හෝ එල්.ටී.ටී.ඊ ය යාපනයත් අල්ලාගෙන හමුදා ජීවිත අනතුරට හෙලනු ඇතැයි යන බියෙන් ය. චන්ද්රිකා සහ කදිරගාමර් සකස් කල සටන් විරාම ගිවිසුමට අත්සන් කළ රනිල් සටන් විරාමය ප්රයෝජනයට ගෙන තමන්ට යුද්ධ කිරීමට බැරි වන සේ සටන් විරාම වගන්තිවලින් තම අතපය බඳ රටේ ආර්ථිකයත් හමුදාවත් ගොඩනගන්න කටයුතු කළ බව ප්රභාකරන්ට නොතේරුණා නොවේ. ප්රභාකරන් 2003 අප්රේල් සාම සාකච්ඡාවලින් ඉවත් වූයේ ඒ නිසාය. ඒ වනවිට රනිල්, චන්ද්රිකාගේ ආණ්ඩු කාලයේ ශ්රී ලංකාවට ආයුධ සැපයීම ලංකාව සමඟ ආරක්ෂක කටයුතු සම්බන්ධයෙන් ගනුදෙනු කිරීම තහනම් කරමින් ඇමෙරිකාව, ඉන්දියාව, බ්රිතාන්ය පනවා තිබූ තහනම ඉවත් කරවා ගන්නට කටයුතු කළේය. ඔහු 2002 ජුලි මාසයේ ජනාධිපති බුෂ් හමුවී හමුදාව ශක්තිමත් කරන්න උදව් ඉල්ලා සිටියේය. බුෂ් ශ්රී ලංකාවේ හමුදාවේ වත්මන් තත්ත්වය සහ එය දියුණු කිරීමට කළ යුත්තේ කුමක්දැයි යන්න පිළිබඳ වාර්තාවක් ලබාගැනීමට ඇමෙරිකානු සහකාර ආරක්ෂක ලේකම් පීටර් රොඩ්මාන් එව්වේය. 2002 නොවැම්බර් 22 වාර්තාව ලැබුණි. බුෂ්-රනිල් සාකච්ඡාවල ප්රථිඵලයක් වශයෙන් ලංකාවට මුහුදු ආරක්ෂක යුද නැවක් තෑගි ලැබුණි. 2007 දී කොටි ආයුධ නැව් විනාශ කළ හැකි වුණේ එම ඇමෙරිකානු නැව නිසා යැයි මහින්දම කී බව පත්තරවල පළ විය. එසේම ඇමෙරිකානු ඔත්තු සේවා කොටි ජාත්යන්තර ආයුධ මිලදී ගැනීමේ ජාලය කැඩුවේ රනිල්ගේ ආණ්ඩු කාලයේ ඇමෙරිකානු සහ ශ්රී ලංකා ඔත්තු සේවා ඒකාබද්ධව කටයුතු කරන්න පටන් ගැනීමේ ප්රතිඵලයක් ලෙසය. ප්රභාකරන් සිටින තුරු රනිල්ට ඉඩක් නෑ එසේම 2003 ඔක්තෝම්බර් ඉන්දියා අගමැති වජ්පායි හමුවූ රනිලයීන්දියාවේ ආයුධ හුවමාරු කර ගැනීමටත් හමුදා ආධාර ලබා ගැනීමටත් ආරක්ෂක ගිවිසුමක් අත්සන් කිරීමට පෙර ඇති කරගත් එකඟතාව ඉක්මන් කරන්න සාකච්ඡා කළේය. ඉන්දියාව ලංකාවට ආරක්ෂක උපකරණ දීමට එකඟ වූයේ හමුදා පුහුණුවට එකඟවූයේ මෙම සාකච්ඡාවල ප්රතිඵලයක් වශයෙන් ය. අද එල්.ටී.ටී.ඊ ය පමණක් නොව තමිල්නාඩුව ද ශ්රී ලංකා ආණ්ඩුවට යුද්ධයට උදව් කරනවා යැයි චෝදනා කරන්නේ රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ වජ්පායි සමඟ සාකච්ඡා කොට ඇති කරගත් එකඟතා අද ක්රියාත්මක වන නිසාය. එසේම බ්රිතාන්ය අගමැති ටෝනි බ්ලෙයාර් හමුවී පෝක්ලණ යුද්ධයේ වීරයකු වූ ජෙනරාල් මයිකල් රෝස් ගේ සහය ලංකාවේ හමුදාව ශක්තිමත් කිරීමට යොදවා ගන්න අවසර පැතූ රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ හමුදාවට අවශ්ය පුහුණුව සහ උපකරණ ලබා ගැනීමට සමත් විය. ශ්රී ලංකාවට ඇමෙරිකානු යුධ ආධාර ලැබෙන අවසන් සාකච්ඡා වටය 2003 නොවැම්බර් දී බුෂ් සහ රනිල් හමු වූ විට පැවැත්වීමට නියමිතව තිබුණි. ඉන්දියාවේ යුද ආධාර ලැබෙන ආරක්ෂක ගිවිසුම් 2003 ඔක්තෝම්බරයට පසු රනිල් සහ වජ්පායි හමුවන විටදී අත්සන් කිරීමට නියමිතව තිබුණි. චන්ද්රිකා 2003 නොවැම්බරයේ ආරක්ෂක අමාත්යාංශය පවරා ගැනීමෙන් ඒ සියල්ල විනාශ විය. ඉන්පසු ඇමෙරිකාව, ඉන්දියාව හෝ බ්රිතාන්ය සන්ධාන ආණ්ඩුව සමඟ ඒ ගැන කතා කළේවත් නැත. මෙම යුධ ආධාර සහ ආරක්ෂක ගිවිසුම් නතර කිරීමය ප්රභාකරන්ට ලොකු වුවමනාවක් තිබුණි. ඔහු චන්ද්රිකා ආරක්ෂක අමාත්යාංශය පවරාගත් විට නිහඬව සිටියේත් 2005 දී රනිල් ජනාධිපතිවරණයෙන් පැරැද්දුවේත් ඒ නිසාය. ප්රභාකරන් ජීවත්ව සිටිනා තුරු රනිල් යළි රජ කරන්න ඉඩ දෙන්නේ නැති බව එල්.ටී.ටී.ඊ ය පිටිපස්ස කසා ගන්න නියපොත්ත නැති තරමට ඇද වැටිලා ඉන්නැද්දීත් 2005 රනිල් පරද්දන්න ගත්ත තීරණය හරි යැයි කියන කීමෙන් පැහැදිලිය. ඉතින් මහින්ද ප්රභාකරන් ඉවර කරනවා නම් මහින්ද කරන්නේ රනිල්ට උදව්වකි.

Bishop of Ratnapura, Most Revd. Cletus Chandrasiri Perera in a letter to Ranil Wickramasinghe

I cannot but state that the two “unofficial” U.N.P. journals have maliciously offended the feelings of the desperate depositors, some of whom happen to be the Catholic clergy, who have been unfairly highlighted in the journals.

Hence I strongly urge you, Hon. Sir, as the leader of the U.N.P. and of the Opposition, to have the editors of the two journals make amends…

Since the Bishop of Ratnapura made a conscious decision to deposit the said funds with Golden Key at an astronomical rate of interest, we owe neither him nor the Catholic Church an apology.

The Bishop was spoken to by the Editor on the phone before the said article was published but he refused to answer any questions.

We also wish to place on record that the Bishop attempted to use the good offices of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in trying to influence the editorial content of this newspaper in relation to our references to him and the Catholic Church in our exposes on Golden Key.

Right, so what happens is, the Bishop of Ratnapura Most Revd. Cletus Chandrasiri Perera writes to Ranil Wickramasinghe, and tells him to tell the Sunday Leader and sister publication Irudina to shut up about the whole clergy investing money in Golden Key thing, and also to apologize. Jansz adds,

A request to this effect from Mr. Wickremesinghe, which, we turned down was in upholding the highest standards of independent, unbiased, professional journalism. We fail to understand why his Lordship subsequently wrote to the Leader of the Opposition who has no interests in this newspaper, when he should have responded in the first instance on the phone with us.

We encourage the Bishop of Ratnapura to go ahead and make a “stronger” statement on this issue “to the state controlled media.” I trust that his Lordship would in that instance be writing through the President of Sri Lanka.

It’s pretty much confirmed now. Sources from the United National Party confirmed “a lot of changes” that will happen, and another meeting like what happened yesterday of dissenting UNP MPs is happening right now. Yesterday’s meeting on leadership ran for a couple of hours, and the same is expected for today.

The change in leadership in the party is both a threat and an opportunity. The threat for be the possibility of a split within the party, and the possibility of the ruling party fishing up a couple of parliamentarians.

On the other hand, this change, if handled correctly has the potential to revive the United National Party for the strong political force which it once was. UNP, just like the other parties, have become a party that have lost their vision and principles. Worse, they’ve lost public support and a connection to the ground level which they once had.

Handled correctly, the party will fly. If not, the party will die. Ranil, like Prabha, managed to keep the party alive, even barely, through a lot of rough times.

Sources from the second level leadership of the United National Party say that the current leader of the Party, Ranil Wickremashinghe will step down following a meeting of the Executive Committee scheduled to be held today evening.

On official statements, and official quotes, this is yet to be confirmed. However, yesterday evening Daily News sent out a news alert saying so, and Jasmine News Wire sent out an SMS alert in the morning to the same account. Interestingly, the big two being Daily Mirror and Ada Derana are still keeping quiet about the deal, exercising caution. Seeing how Daily Mirror news alerts had a few fuckups recently with the Air Attacks on Colombo (saying that a plane fell off Anamaduwa) and then the bomb explosion down Mathara (saying former Southern Chief Minister H.G. Sirisena died, when he didn’t) this probably is good, in case Wicks decides to stay on.

Speculations are rampant as to who will take over the party leadership when Wicks steps down, but Karu seems the obvious next pick.

A much needed change, albeit coming a bit late. However, the party could do with a breath of fresh air to rise up as a strong opposition party, a much needed change again, at a time when the watchdogs are missing.
