I’m beginning to lose all faith in Comcast and their lists.
Of course, I agree with a lot of the movies that are on the ‘best’ list, but they put the following on the worst list: Jack Frost, The Santa Claus, The Polar Express, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas [non-animated], and Christmas With The Kranks.

Sure, they may not be ‘classics’, but they are far from the worst holiday movies. In fact, I think I watch all of these movies numerous times each year.
Lame Comcast, lame.

Personality Pedagogy Newsletter Volume 4, Number 3, November, 2009

Hello and welcome to the thirty-ninth Personality Pedagogy newsletter highlighting what’s new at http://personalitypedagogy.arcadia.edu.

What’s new this month? Lots!!

Did you know that elders who go online show increased brain function and less depression than elders who do not use the internet to learn about new things, reminisce, play games, and connect with family and friends? You can read the whole article here: http://tinyurl.com/yh7pgo2

Are your students looking for a study abroad internship experience in psychology? AIDE, a not-for-profit organization which provides international internships and volunteer experiences, is offering a special 2-for-1 discount on deposits until November 30. Check it out: http://www.aideabroad.org/index.asp

Do you teach other classes in psychology? The Society for the Teaching of Psychology, Office of Teaching Resources in Psychology, just debuted a wiki for the Teaching of Psychology (http://teachpsych.pbworks.com/). Here’s your chance to jump in to the wonderful world of wikis!

Are you familiar with Discovery Education? A division of Discovery Communications, i.e., they of the TV and magazine, designed a series of lesson plans for the k-12 classroom (but which can be easily beefed up for an intro-level college course). Though they seem to have many topics except for psychology (language arts, history, astronomy, ecology, economics, fine arts, biology, literature, mathematics and more) we found some gems for genetics, evolution and even Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams hidden in these pages. Check them out via the links below.

Do you own the ill-fated 6th edition of the APA manual? We have word from Ted Bosack (via the PsychTeacher listserv) about the APA Manual exchange program:

”The leadership of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (APA, Division 2)
wants to be sure that as many of its members as possible are aware of APA’s
decision to replace copies of the recently published Publication Manual revision
that contained a number of errors and inconsistencies. APA will replace these
purchased manuals with corrected copies. However, there are a number of
requirements that must be met prior to a December 15, 2009, deadline if
purchasers are to receive a replacement copy. These requirements are as
follows:

APA has agreed to replace copies of the Publication Manual (1st printing). If
you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, you must follow these steps:
* Call 1-800-374-2721, ext. 5510 between 9:00 and 6:00 EST.
* State your desire to exchange your manual for a new printing and be
prepared to answer some questions.
* You will get an e-mail with an instruction sheet and pre-paid mailing label to
send your old manual back.
* REMEMBER, THE DEADLINE IS DECEMBER 15!!

These requirements are also detailed on the STP Web site at
http://teachpsych.org/news/news.php ”

Of course, if you’re fed up with the manual and the entire brouhaha, then check out the first link to a free, online, APA style sheet for the current (2009) style guidelines.

As ever, please pass this newsletter on to interested colleagues and invite them to sign up for future issues. Remember, you can read old newsletters, comment on newsletters, view the current newsletter or you can even re-read what you missed in last month’s newsletter by checking out our new blog: http://personalitypedagogy.wordpress.com/ You can even receive Personality Pedagogy newsletters via an RSS (“Really Simple Syndication”) feed as soon as they are posted.

I, personally, am very thankful for the community of teachers which have helped me with my teaching throughout the years and especially to the readers and subscribers who support Personality Pedagogy. We wish a bountiful and restful Thanksgiving holiday to you all!!

Cheers,
Marianne

From the website: ”APA Lite for College Papers” is a concise guide to crafting research papers in the style of the American Psychological Association (APA). It is based on the current edition of the APA Publication Manual (2009) while incorporating guidelines for ”Material Other Than Journal Articles” found in the last edition. Specifically covers writing scientific papers at the undergraduate level.

2. OTRP Teaching of Psychology Wiki

The Society for the Teaching of Psychology, Office of Teaching Resources in Psychology, just debuted this wiki. Wiki-Master Sue Frantz, Highline Community College, Des Moines, WA, explains: ”This brand new resource is completely dependent on you to build it. In the spirit of reciprocity, we ask that if you take something, you leave something. To be able to write to this wiki, you will need to request access from the Wiki-Master.”

The STEPS (STatistical Education through Problem Solving) consortium has developed problem-based modules to support the teaching of Statistics in various fields including Psychology. As part of their online support, Valerie J. Easton and John H. McColl maintain this statistics glossary for all of the terms covered in a basic course. The glossary is arranged alphabetically or organized around key topics including presenting data, sampling, probability, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, categorical data, nonparametric methods, time series data, design of experiments, ANOVA, paired data, correlation, regression, and random variables and probability distributions

6. A Dream Interpretation: Tuneups for the Brain

A new theory suggests that dreams are a warm-up for the day ahead. In a paper published last month in the journal ”Nature Reviews Neuroscience”, Dr. J. Allan Hobson, a psychiatrist and longtime sleep researcher at Harvard, argues that the main function of rapid-eye-movement sleep, or REM, when most dreaming occurs, is physiological. Read all about his research in this ”New York Times” article by Benedict Carey, from November 10, 2009. http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/mbh/index.htm

The full-text version of his book is available from this website: ”In this study Rank looks at a a wide variety of Eurasian hero birth narratives, including Greek, Roman, Judeo-Christian, Indian, and Germanic legendary figures. He uses the methodology and vocabulary of classic Freudian psychoanalysis to do so. The middle part of this book, where Rank enumerates some of these tales, will be the most useful for modern readers, as he draws on a wide range of sources, some of them fairly obscure. In the last part he puts these myths ‘on the couch’ as it were, and ties up his thesis very coherently.”

9. Dr. Matthew Fox: The Stanford Lectures: An Immersion in Creation Spirituality
What is the Creation Spirituality lineage and Why does it strike fear in the hearts of Inquisitors and Fundamentalists? What does it mean to be Spiritual and adult in the 21st century? What is the future of spirituality, religion and interfaith in our time? Fox answers these questions is a series of videos, using the theories of Otto Rank, ”the youngest and the most brilliant” of Freud’s students:

Calculated Power Rankings, Unit Strength, Strength of Schedule, and Estimated Final Record following week 10 of the NFL season. I use an engineering method of iteratively solving for best fit to the data (scores) to create the ranks and related applications that corrects for opponents played.

Everything is based on correcting the scoring offense and defense of each team for opponents, by calculating the expected scoring against an average opponent, instead of averaging the points scored against the actual opponents played. This allows all teams are evaluated on a level plane. Power is defined as scoring offense minus scoring defense, the list sorted by the net difference.

I run a full season calculation, and a most recent 4 weeks calculation and blend them (4:1) to acknowledge change and teams that are hot/cold.

Power Rank:

New England retains its hold on the top spot, meaning a NE upset prediction is coming for next week in a battle of 1 vs. 2. New Orleans rises past Indy, getting back to #2, slightly behind the Pats. A NO win this week likely will propel them back to #1, a position they held much of the season. Minnesota is finally playing like a top 5 team on the scoreboard, and finally rises up to #4.

Two huge changes this week. Pit takes a big fall out of the top 10. There are two comfortable data points for them, one in the middle of the top 10, one around 16. They have waivered between both all season, almost as if they are two different teams. Incidentally it strongly corresponds to Troy and his health status. San Diego makes a strong upward jump following their blowout of the Broncos. It likely will correct down a bit, but they have been on the move upward for several weeks, similar to last season.

Overall the field is compressing, most of the positive change (via the change indicator) is near the bottom, most of the negative change is near the top. Seems that the top and bottom are correcting, the top isn’t as great as they seemed, and the bottom isn’t as horrible as they seemed. A lot of the leagues bad teams seem to be on the verge of making some real improvement. Tennessee however remains absolutely on fire.

Net = Projected net scoring agaisnt an average opponent (PPG)
Off = Projected offensive scoring against an average defense (PPG)
O Rk = Rank of offense
Def = Projected scoring by an average offense against the defense (PPG)
D Rk = Rank of defense
Chg = Difference between data run of most recent 4 weeks and full season (hot/cold) (PPG)
C Rk = Rank of change.

Strength of Schedule:

Instead of using points, or quality opponents, etc, the method that I chose to rank the strength of schedule is the average power rank of opponent played. The current power rank is used and each week the full season recalculated.

Seas = Average power rank of all opponents all season
Prev = Average power rank of teams played thus far
P Rk = Ranked difficulty of past schedule
Fut = Average power rank of teams yet to be played
F Rk = Ranked difficulty of future schedule.

Estimated Final Record:

I use the power rank, current record, and future opponents to estimate the final record for the team. The net scoring against an average opponent for one team is subtracted from another to determine who is favored and by how many points.

If a team is favored by 14+ points, I assumed that they win 100% of the time.
If a team is favored between 7 and 14 points, I assumed that they win 80% of the time.
If a teams is favored between 0 and 7 points, I assumed that they win 60% of the time.
If a team is not favored between 0 and 7 points, I assumed that they win 40% of the time.
If a team is not favored between 7 and 14 points, I assumed that they win 20% of the time.

Overall the division leaders remain stable. In the NFC however, Philly has moved into a tie with Dallas in the NFCE. In the NFC wildcard race, the Packers are currently projected to take one WC, and the one that loses the NFCE tiebreaker gets the other. The Giants and Falcons are in WC catchup one game back, SF and Chicago are virtually eliminated. In the AFC the Ravens, Steelers, and Dolphins are the current WC favorites, with the Broncos, Texans, and Jaguars a game back in the chase. The Jets are on the edge of elimination.

Power Ranking Performance:

Week 1 record – 14-2
Week 2 record – 11-5
Week 3 record – 12-4
Week 4 record – 11-3
Week 5 record – 7-7
Week 6 record – 9-5
Week 7 record – 9-4
Week 8 record – 7-6
Week 9 record – 8-5
Week 10 record – 8-7
Week 11 record – 12-4
Total – 108-52
Missed Last Week – KC-Pit, Atl-NYG, Cin-Oak, Ten-Hou

Overall a pretty good week. Missed on the two big upsets. Predicted 2 underdog wins, got one correct (Mia-Car).

Enjoy

You know what really grinds my gears……….. Leave it to your imagination. That’s all

You know what really grinds my gears………..
Leave it to your imagination. That’s all I can say to people who are trying to predict where the leafs will finish this year in the standings. I would love to say to them, its only 10 games in, don’t panic. But seriously, why not panic!!! Every year the standings seem to get tighter and tighter, and when march and april role around, every hockey mind says, ‘well if they had won that game at the start of the season” or “shouldn’t have let that one get away”, it reinforces the need for a panic button. Maybe the Leafs can get one of those business depot ‘big problem’ buttons and use that?
There are so many things wrong with the Toronto Maples Leafs that it would be too time consuming and trying to dissect the issues here. We haven’t won a cup since 1967, my father is 59 and pretty bitter about it; so as Leaf fans have been doing for half a century, dig down deep and pull out some of the most monumental and pathetic excuses you can. We always have a one up on Chicago hahaha, haven’t won since the 50’s, what a bunch of losers!!! Oh wait, they have team comprised of some of the best young talent in the game, and are on the verge of great things. If Chicago wins the cup, we will officially have nothing on anyone.
I will be attending the Buds vs Habs game in Montreal on Halloween. I am one who loves a great dual with a habs fan, chirping as I like to put it. What the hell can I say?? We haven’t won a game yet. We haven’t made the playoffs since the pre lockout years. We don’t have any legitimate threats up front. Our goaltending is shit. And oh ya, our biggest acquisition, your former defenseman, is having a terrible start to season and is reinforcing the fear that hes one dimensional and takes too many penalties (komisarek leads the leafs in PM’s).
I am just tired leaf fans. It was passed on from my father. As a Toronto fan in general, I find myself weeping when I go to bed. No winning makes Mike a sad boy. Life is just not as exciting if I don’t have a team to support. Ya I love sports that much!!! Lets some up my collection of dwindling franchises:
1) Leafs…..no sentence needed!!!
2) Blue Jays…..no playoffs since 1993, no playoffs in near future. Ricciardi didn’t work out, so we are rebuilding once again……ya well how do we compete with ¼ the payroll of the Yanks and Soxs??
3) Celtic FC….my Scottish brothers are in 2nd in the SPL, but were easily eliminated from Champions League…another year I guess
4) Raptors…..we will have to see
5) Toronto FC….no playoffs yet in franchise existence
6) NYJ….great start to the season, but we lost to Buffalo last night, wtf, its buffalo, they lose games so you can win
Sports are important in making your city happy. Oh yah, I am a Tiger Cats fan, we lost last night again, 4 straight, after starting the season strong. Well atleast the Argos are worse???? Until next time folks.
And you’re done jack!!!!

Clothing world is a power if it is about a business. Clothes, it something what must have every of us and living in modern cities clothes are also deciding about the beauty, the social status and how they can see us different. Therefore an ability of good selecting dresses is so important. Made-to-measure clothing, it relic. Today shops are stocked into all possible sizes, cuts and shapes of clothes, this way, in order to everyone, could find something for himself. Still: tall men without the problem will find the length appropriate for oneself a pair of trousers, the well-tailored shirt or the jacket, women, even the ones fluffy without the problem will also find something for themselves. Clothes are today available the same as the food. It is a lot of her around. It is possible today to buy T-shirts, the underwear or the dressing gown together with rolls in the favourite supermarket. At a petrol station whereas, it is possible zapatrzeć oneself into the silly T-shirt with the imprint. However clothes shops attract it of people the most. Constant need of appealing and looking fashionably, causes that people are buying more and more clothes. Thanks to that new clothing companies, new shops, in which it is possible to buy the most fashionable blouses, T-shirts or trousers are coming into existence. Clothes took control of the market to this rank that shops of clothes were almost all along the way. Large retail parks, in which the most he is are rising from shops of clothes. In newspapers particularly in women’s magazines more and more themes also appear about the fashion, clothes, the newest colours and trends. Clothes are mainly a domain of women which straight out outings to shops adore for new clothes. Every of us is following through gossip and trends which later he is seeking in their favourite shops of clothes.

After analysing different areas of my chosen website ‘www.adidas.com’, I will now use various tools

After analysing different areas of my chosen website ‘www.adidas.com’, I will now use various tools that are available on the internet (Google Insight, Google keyword tool, etc) to help me define a set of keywords that will effectively describe my website’s operations.

To start of this investigation, I will use Google Search-based keyword tool. I will input the URL of my website and it will return various search terms linked to the website.

This screenshot shows the result of my search using Google search based keyword tool. It shows you a list of all the popular search terms related to the URL I inputted. The first on the list is ‘women’s swimwear’. This is highly relevant to my website as it facilitates a large women’s section dealing with various fashions, the second most popular search term is ‘sweatpants’. I will also include this on my final list as it proves to be a popular search term linking to www.adidas.com.

The next tool I used was called ‘Google Insight’. This tool basically lets you enter a search term and it finds other search terms, which are popular and relate to it. This is a very useful tool as businesses can take heed of what customers are looking for in a particular market segment and use the results with their website. To use this tool, I firstly entered the term ‘sports clothes’.

Here are the results;

From this screenshot, we can see the most popular search terms related to my original term. The term ‘Sports clothing’ ranks highly in the results show, I will incorporate this term into my list as well as the original term ‘sports clothes’ as that is the most popular search criteria.

I will now move onto Google Adwords. Google Adwords is useful in the respect you can enter the address of your website and it will generate list of keywords based on various subtopics which link to your website.

The tool groups together topics based on your website and then lists keywords beneath the topic header.

To start off, I entered the URL of my chosen website. After pressing ‘enter’ the following screenshot appeared showing various keywords relating to my website.

Google Adwords compiled lists, grouping keywords to the terms shown above.

Here are the keywords grouped together;

- Results linking to ‘indoor soccer shows’ and ‘soccer shoes’

I will incorporate various terms from these subheadings, as they seem to be popular in their respect categories.

- Keywords from the subheading ‘shoes’. From this list ‘running shoes’ seems to be a popular keyword and very relevant to my website.

The term ‘Shoes’ seems to be a very popular trending topic and is very relevant to adidas.com. I will try to incorporate this into my list as it has potential to attract more customers and my website would have the chance of having a higher relevance rank amongst other websites/competitors.

My 12 search terms

Sports clothing

Sports wear

Sport shoes

Women’s swimwear

Sweatpants

Swimwear

Running shoes

Discount shoes

Men’s soccer shoes

Buy shoes online

Sports clothes online

Gym clothes

Here are the 12 keywords that I believe would help www.adidas.com in terms of attaining a higher relevance rank in different search engines thus leading to more customers. As previously stated, shoes were highly ranked amongst each analysis tool so it was important to include these search terms into my finalised list. Many of the search terms included are very similar in terms of what items are popular amongst customers; swimwear and shoes seem to be the most popular.

Calculated Power Rankings, Unit Strength, Strength of Schedule, and Estimated Final Record following

I run a full season calculation and a most recent 4 weeks calculation and blend them (4:1) to acknowledge change and teams that are hot/cold.

Power Rank:

Despite the loss, New England maintains its spot as top dog. However Indy’s win and New Orleans’ weak showing against the Rams causes the Colts to move ahead of the Saints. Quietly the Saints defense has been in decline as of late, relative to earlier in the season.

The two pretenders that I pointed out last week took a bit hit to their rank as the system corrected itself. The Jets and Dolphins unusually high ranks have come down to earth, overall the top 10 looks very solid. It is expected, by this time of year, 6-7 of the final 10 are in the top 10.

Early on the change indicator was a bit of an oddity that didn’t show much. As of late it has become a much stronger indicator of who’s hot and who’s not, with Tennessee as the league’s hottest team currently, showing the most dramatic improvement in recent weeks, and the Broncos are the league’s coldest team. San Diego and Houston have been sustaining positive change for several weeks, most teams will oscillate around zero, sustained positive change is a sign of a team showing sustainable improvement.

In the battle for the basement, Oakland takes over for St. Louis as the worst team in the league. St Louis’ strong showing against New Orleans helped a great deal.

The early season trend of no below average teams, just a slightly below average team or two, then a huge drop to several awful teams is dissipating, with Tennessee and Carolina rising up out of the doldrums, Chicago and Seattle falling back from average. But the trend that showed up strongly last year that hasn’t been as notable yet this season is beginning to form again. At the top is a concentration of the best defensive teams. The best offenses are much more spread out than the best defenses. This trend showed strongly last year as well.

It is looking like the NFC wildcard race is going to be a good one, with 5 teams currently projected to tie for the two spots. The AFCN is currently projected to supply both AFC wild cards. Baltimore’s win over Denver a few weeks ago could prove to be problematic for Denver if they can’t recover to take the division from San Diego.

Power Ranking Performance:

Week 1 record – 14-2
Week 2 record – 11-5
Week 3 record – 12-4
Week 4 record – 11-3
Week 5 record – 7-7
Week 6 record – 9-5
Week 7 record – 9-4
Week 8 record – 7-6
Week 9 record – 8-5
Week 10 record – 8-7
Total – 96-48
Missed Last Week – Tn-Buf, NYJ-Jax, Den-Was, Atl-Car, Dal-GB, SD-Phi, NE-Ind

Bad week. 2 of 5 on predicting underdogs (Cin, KC correct). Power ranks have definite limitations picking games. Looking forward to a hopefully more accurate pick generator next season that I hope can correct many of the power ranking limitations.

Enjoy

PageRank is probably one of the first signs your site has landed. Established a user base, good content, and most importantly is legitimate. Unfortunately Google has done a bit of flip flopping. Page rank info has been removed from the web master tools. So why?

Well pagerank is not as important as first thought. While it’s important, it should not be the central focus when building a new site. So content > design > PR? Just another part of the battle between SEO experts and search engines as they attempt to capture more of the advertising revenue. While it still holds an important status page rank is no different.

So the bottom line is: build a good site and page rank, search ranking, and money will naturally follow. Don’t let the SEO game slow you down and remember PageRank is just a number.
