I think I will be modest enough if I state that most of the Bengalis are bitten by the “Wanderlust”

I think I will be modest enough if I state that most of the Bengalis are bitten by the “Wanderlust” bug in their childhood. The tradition trickled down from generation to generation, and often there are examples of families which spend a significant portion of their earnings on travel and tours in each year. Bengalis can be found touring every nook and corner of India. Even with that, a majority of this community will get stumped if you ask whether they were been to Gujarat. On job? Yes. On tour? No, why?! Somnath is there. Dwarka is there, I know. Gir, hmmm. What else?! No wonder that even the intense campaigns by the actor-demigod Amitabh Bachchan are not making much impression over the Bengali minds.

As a regular family affair, we dust our maps and bring out our travel books at the time when the scent of the Durga Puja is in the air. It is that time of the year when there would be severe squabbles over happy things, fortunately, like selecting the next place to travel. We selected Gujarat last year, more so because we knew that in the December month, there is a festival named Rann Utsav happens in Gujarat, bringing in several tourists together. So, we visited the Gujarat Tourism office and booked our place in the Rann Utsav.

Rann Utsav is a month long festival of celebrating the life in Kutch which is the westernmost province of Gujarat and India, as well, and the main feature is the Rann of Kutch. Rann is, geologically speaking, a tidal flat with expanse of several hundreds of kilometers. The experience with Rann will come in next few parts but for now, I will concentrate on Rann Utsav.

We reached Bhuj in the morning, and boarded a bus arranged by the Gujarat Tourism to take us to the Rann Festival grounds. The road from the Bhuj to the tent city is flanked by several swampy lakes which were filled with migratory birds. For Rann Festival, a huge tent city was erected near a village named Dholavira. The tent city is complete with auditoriums, mini-hospital, food pavilion, dinner tents etc. For the next three days, we will live in one of such tents.

We loved the tents. The interior was fantastic with every available amenity, and complete with a bathroom. It had a complete village look and the organizers have tried every bit to perfect it. In the next three days, we will experience the tent city, see the White Rann, will travel to see the Narayan Sarovar, and will experience the people and cuisine of Kutch.

Although I will cover the experience in more details over the next few blogs, but our overall experience with Rann Utsav was kind of a mixed feeling. The earnest try to put the Gujarat in the tourism map is often marred by failures in the planning, more so because of the scale of the activity and tourists that came down to Rann.

Good:

Tent city. It is a great experience. If I get a chance again, I will probably spend the time in tent, relaxing, listening to music, gossiping, rather than going out on the tours.

Experience with White Rann. It is out of the earth experience.

Bad

Still a very regional festival with restricted options for food. Announcements are mostly in Hindi and Gujarati, and posting problems for foreign tourists.

Disorganized approach on the sight-seeing tours. Several families will come with a large number of family members to fill a bus, and they will insist that you cannot board the tour bus because they have booked it for their family. The officials mentioned that there is no such facility to book an entire tour bus like that but you need to be ready for the shock.

The tour planning was a problem e.g. there are several nice activities happen in the tent city but the timings are such that if you take a sight-seeing tour, you cannot enjoy those activities and vice versa.

Advice

If possible, arrange for your own conveyance and shun the tour buses. It will be pricier but save you lot of squabbles and discomfort.

Work hard, work with devotion, and embrace technology to find solutions of the problems faced by people: Narendra Modi

Gujarat has remodeled many structures and systems, delivered good governance- it has added a soul into the system. No wonder the balance of global economic power is shifting in Gujarat’s favour. Gujarat has remained the most favourite destination for capital investment
as well. Thus,Gujarat can….. Gujarat will…..

Gujarat is on the rise! “Chalo Jalae Deep Vahan, Jahan Abhi Tak Andhera hai” – Let us light the lamp where there is darkness- this was the slogan of the first Chintan Shibir (Annual conclave that contemplates and prepares road-map of Swarnim Gujarat- Golden Gujarat). I wish to thank Gujaratis of all faith who revered and prayed and turned this slogan into reality by kindling millions of lamps.

The world is witnessing three great transformations, which are simultaneously taking place in Gujarat –economic, social and physical. Civilizations are meant to uplift people by offering them the tools of development in to their hands. Gujarat has proved that it has a solution to every problem and has an answer to every question. Vision, understanding, knowledge and a profound commitment to execute the citizen centric agenda has placed smile on the faces of millions. What can be a greater reward than this?
“Stop blaming others; ask a question to your self what you can do for the society? What you can do for Gujarat?”

Gujarat has witnessed tremendous public participation in implementing the development programmes- be it Kanya Kelavani Mahotsav, Krushi Mahotsav, Gunotsav, Garib Kalyan Mela, or the water conservation drives.
Consistent and wholehearted endeavors have reaped the desired outcomes- School Drop out ratio is reduced to less then 2 percent, Gujarat is consistently maintaining 11 percent growth in agriculture, more than 150 national and international recognition to Gujarat is not a small achievement.
Entire nation is facing electricity crisis- no metro in the nation is offering uninterrupted power to its citizens, including the national capital New Delhi. Against that, the 18000 villages of Gujarat are illuminating with light and development. The small wish from a villager to have electricity during dinnertime gave birth to Jyotigram Yojana, which gave uninterrupted power to all the villages. It is a challenge for many other states and the third world nations- they can take a leaf from Gujarat.

Gujarat has engaged all the stakeholders in nurturing the child, Gujarat has offered spaces and platform to each child, Gujarat has tried molding a child through an education that helps them grow to be a good citizen. Try to see the glow into the eyes of children. School infrastructure is being expanded; lakhs of school classrooms are built, adding other facilities like computer lab, kitchen nurseries, sanitation- blocks and many other facets are being added during the last one decade.

Gujarat seems destined to remain the world’s most important actor for the foreseeable future. Is it not true that balance of global economic power is shifting in Gujarat’s favour? Is Gujarat not on the rise? Gujarat has succeeded in making progress in all fronts, including industrial development. During the worst recessionary trends and the global meltdown, Gujarat wooed foreign and national investors –the Vibrant Gujarat Global investor’s summit is a grand success, it has spellbound the world, for the first time in the history the MoU worth Rs lakhs of Crores is inked in social sector. This is the true strength of Gujarat.

As far as the amalgamation of conventional wisdom with cutting edge technology is concerned, the Krushi Mahotsav remains the most successful endeavor that aims to bring agriculture scientist and a farmer on one platform. The state which was plagued by water scarcity and lack of resources has marched to the top position by attaining 11 percent growth rate, it is a challenge for any other country or State to replicate these numbers- it is challenge for them to even attain 5% growth in agriculture, even the developed nations can not dream of the target of 10%. But Gujarat can, Gujarat has done it. Water of check-dams and farm-ponds is harnessed for farming, crop-pattern change has benefited the small farmers, Gujarat is leading the 2nd green revolution in our country, and there is no doubt about it.

Gujarat can….. Gujarat will…..Gujarat is on the rise!

Gujarat has remodeled many structures and systems, Delivering good governance Gujarat has poured soul into the systems, previously we had medical emergency- vans, however, the 108 service has made a miracle reaching out to patients within no time, and it has saved thousands of lives. All the 18000 villages got online connectivity, citizens can have an access to the world, and farmers can have market- data at the tip of their fingers.

Revolutionary approach to empower the local self-governments by implementing the concept of Taluka Government, they are to draft a road-map of development considering the actual need and desire of local people.
Converting a revenue deficit state into a revenue surplus state is not a small task.

Converting loss making Public Sector Units in to a profit making blue-chip entities is the outcome of strong political will to implement bold initiatives in the larger interests of the people. Discipline among the political bosses and administrative top brass is the cornerstone of its excellent performance record.

Gujarat has operationalized a separate department for climate change and has taken concrete measures to promote non-conventional energy on a grand scale. Favorable wind and solar policies coupled with good governance has attracted the giants of this sector to invest in Gujarat. Bold initiatives have been undertaken to alleviate poverty: Gujarat launched a chain of “Garib Kalyan Melas” delivering the scheme benefits straight in to the hands of an appropriate beneficiary. Proactive approach has placed the official at the doorstep of the beneficiary; witness the revolutionary change in approach of government official’s functioning.

Behind the success saga there is a leader who is filled with immense passion and love for Gujarat, he is the architect of Swarnim Gujarat, Chief Minister Narendra Modi. He is being mentioned as a potential Prime Minister of nation. His era is an era of vision, an era of new thinking!

Narendra Modi criticises cotton export ban, writes to PM

Opposing the Centre’s decision to ban cotton exports, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying the “anti-farmer” decision was taken without consulting states.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification banning exports of all grades of cotton with immediate effect.

Gujarat along with Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are the major cotton producing states in the country.

The chief minister also questioned why decisions of such importance were taken without consulting the affected states. “Does the Centre have no regard for the rights of state farmers,” the statement added.

Terming the Centre’s decision to impose a ban on cotton exports as “arbitrary”, the chief minister said that such decisions affect the economic interests of Gujarat cotton farmers the most and that the Centre must refrain from playing with their economic interests.

He pointed out that when such a ban was imposed last year, China took great advantage of this move when the immense profits could have easily gone to the Indian farmers.

A similar decision by the Centre, last year cost the farmers of Gujarat Rs 14,000 crore and a policy reversal at a later stage caused further losses when the farmers were forced to sell their cotton at throw away prices, Modi pointed out.

“Narendra Modi has written a strongly worded letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking him to immediately revoke the ban imposed by the Government of India on cotton exports,” according to a statement posted on his website.

UPA has lost credibility over cotton export policy: Narendra Modi

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi today said the Congress-led UPA government has lost its “credibility” in the eye of world for banning cotton export and then rolling it back buckling under pressure from allies.

Speaking at a seminar organised by north Indians settled in Gujarat in Surat, Modi lashed out at the Congress-led Central government saying it has lost trustworthiness.

“On one hand there is Gujarat which is providing an atmosphere of peace, unity and credibility, and on the other there is the UPA government in the Center whose credibility has sunk to the bottom,” Modi said.

“The recent example is that of the ban on export of cotton by the UPA government and then rolling it back following opposition from farmers,” he said.

“Such dubious policies of the Union government has eroded its credibility at the international level. It has now become clear globally that the Central government in India can not be trusted,” the chief minister said.

He further alleged that the UPA government was neck deep in corruption.

“Gujarat has blessings of crores of people of India. Those conspiring to defame Gujarat or stop its progress and development, beware, we have never bowed down to such forces nor will we do so in the future,” Modi added.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi has heartily thanked the people of Gujarat for giving huge support to his series of fasts under Sadbhavna Mission

It is noteworthy that Mr. Modi started Sadbhavna Mission with observing of 3-day fast in Ahmedabad on September 17, 2011 with a view to strengthen the atmosphere of peace, unity and harmony in the state. Further, he observed one-day fast in 26 districts and seven cities totaling to 36 fasts.

Here are the highlights of the Sadbhavna Mission.

• Six lakh kilogram of food grain distributed to poor. Thousands of kilos of fruits and nuts distributed among the kids of anganwadis.

• Donations of around rupees four crore received for Kanya Kelavani.

• Thousands of people took pledges for the welfare of society.

• Drawing, elocution and essay competition on the theme of Sadbhavna was held which gave motivation to around ten lakh children.

Speaking at one-day Sadbhavana fast in Dahod, Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi today said that even Sheila Dikshit said that Modi government is re-elected due to the development it has done in Gujarat. Modi said that Gujarat Congress published a newspaper in which he was praised. Shri Modi added that truth can not be covered for a long time.

Modi declared Rs 1500 crore for development works in Dahod district. This was Modi’s 29th Sadbhavana fast. According to the state govt release, as many as 15,000 people joined fast with Shri Modi.

Shri Modi said, “today Modi kurta fashion is admired in the world, but many years ago one tailor of Dahod had selected such dress for me.”

Coming down heavily on Union Government, he said, “Center’s policy is to “Divide and Rule while our policy is Inclusive Growth-Collective Efforts”.He called upon people to eradicate Vote Bank policy from the political field and said, “If others want to followGujaratin development sector, they should not merely copy us but, first of all, they must adopt the path of peace, harmony and integrity”.

The tremendous development ofGujarathas now become an issue of hot discussion in the country. Gujarat and development have become synonymous to each other andGujarathas emerged as a power surplus state, though it does not have any coalfield. Now a number of tribal students study Medical Science inChinaand take pilot training in countries likeCanadawith Government subsidy.

Shri. Modi while announcing a development package of Rs. 1500 crore for the all round development of Dahod district said“I am the custodian of public exchequer and will not all anybody to misuse it”. The amount will be spentfor building new roads and bridges, housing projects, implementing new water supply and irrigation schemes, strengthening health and education sector, and to develop infrastructural facilities in the district. It may be recalled that the developmental works worth Rs. 1212 crore are in progress in dahod district.

Attributing the development of Gujarat to six crore GujaratisChief Ministersaid, Gujarat’s development was solely based upon unity, harmony, peace and integrity of 6 crore people ofGujarat.Gujaratand development has become the synonymous to each other.Gujarathas adopted the path of peace. Curfew and riots have now become past inGujarat.Gujarathas earned a unique identity in the world.

Shri. Modi said,Gujarathas achieved new heights in development. The tremendous development that has been carried out in Gujarat for the past ten years has not only changed the entire scenario but also changed the mindset of people and that tribal People of backward district like Dahod now do not demand for building new roads or petty loan subsidy from Government, but they ask for four lane roads or paver roads in their district. We have spent million of rupees to provide drinking water to people of Dahod, he added.

Religious leaders from various communities, people from all section of society, sports persons, journalists, physically handicapped and blind children, school children, women-house wives, teenagers, Royal family of Devgadh Baria, Advocates from Dahod District Bar Association, Merchant Association, youngsters and old persons and thousands of tribal people in their traditional dresses met shri.

The Government of Gujarat today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with TOTO, a leading Japanese player into sanitary ware and bath fittings in presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Narendra Modi. The MoU signing was a key element of the Japanese delegation’s programme during their two-day visit to Gujarat. This is TOTO’s first plant in India which will be set up at GIDC Estate in Halol to manufacture sanitary wares and cater to the growing demand of the Indian market. The annual capacity of this plant would be 5,00,000 unit in its first phase of the total three phases planned as of now. The company would be investing to the tune of INR 380 Crore (approx. US$ 76 million) for their setups which will generate employment for 500 people. TOTO intends to complete proposed investment by 2013 and commence commercial production by July of 2014. The MoU was signed between Mr Mukesh Kumar, IAS, Managing Director, iNDEXTb and Mr Toshikatsu Kondo, Project Leader of TOTO India Pvt. Ltd.

The Japanese delegation led by Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) visited Hitachi’s plant and other sites in industrial zones in Kadi. Considering the influx of Japanese investments in the coming years, the state government plans to set up special Japanese townships around the Dholera Special Investment Region and other industrial zones. A Memorandum of Understanding between the Gujarat government and JETRO was signed in November 2011 to set-up a Japanese Industrial Zone.

Welcoming the Japanese delegation, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat said, “Gujarat and Japan share strong cultural and business relationships. We consider you as a part of our family and are always eager to help you do business in our State. We are committed to providing not only basic infrastructure like roads, ports and airports but also provide next-generation technologies like an optical fibre network, gas grids and technologies for satellite transmission. We have already put significant efforts in basic infrastructure and now we believe is the time to think beyond the basics and put together next-generation infrastructure. I envisage huge investments from Japan in Gujarat and hence I would like to promote Japanese food and language here. I believe it’s a win-win situation for both Gujarat and Japan when it comes to sharing culture and doing business.”

Mr Nakamura, Executive Vice President of JETRO invited the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Narendra Modi to Japan when JETRO plans to hold a special conference on doing business in Gujarat this year. Addressing the Japanese delegation, Mr Nakamura said, “Japanese companies have been successful in India and in Gujarat as well. We would like to set-up a single-window shop based in Gujarat for Japanese companies wanting to do business here. With this initiative, we will be able to facilitate Japanese businessmen investing here and, therefore, generate employment in the State. The State government’s support has been incredible and our members present here are showing interest in setting up manufacturing as well as services sector investment”

TOTO is the world’s largest plumbing products manufacturer. TOTO offers a complete line of commercial and decorative plumbing fixtures and fittings, faucets, accessories, shower and flush valves, as well as lavatories, toilets, Air Baths and urinals.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi advocates development on

3 S – Scale, Speed and Skill to realize India’s century

Tenth Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas – 2012 CM Narendra Modi advocates development on 3 S – Scale, Speed and Skill to realize India’s century CM Modi receives standing ovation by NRIs at the Pravasi Sammelan

Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi today said that new India should stand on the three pillars - Scale, Speed and Skill – a model propagated by the state of Gujarat, to realize its full potential. The days for slow working has gone and we have to think of a bigger scale, develop skills and execute with speed. Then only it will be possible to match other countries and reach to the pinnacle of glory making India truly a global power.

Mr. Narendra Modi said that Gujarat is the India’s rather global capital of solar energy. Gujarat and Rajasthan are major hubs of solar energy radiations. “When I think of Gujarat, I think of Rajasthan too. Gujarat is the first state in India to have a solar energy policy which was later adopted by the Government of India. World’s largest solar park with 3,000 MW capacity is being established in Gujarat jointly with Clinton Foundation.

He suggested that Central Government may consider setting up huge solar power projects on western Indo-Pak border, which can be managed by the Border Security Force (BSF). “I invite the industry to invest in solar equipment industry so as to promote in-house manufacturing units in Gujarat,” he spoke to a hall packed of NRIs at a plenary session of Chief Ministers.

He said that when he became Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, there w as a shortfall of 2,000 MW power in the State. Whereas the nation is still facing a similar situation, we introduced the Jyotigram scheme to provide round-the-clock power in every nook and corner of Gujarat and today state has become, a power surplus state. Shri Narendra Modi said that Gujarat has 4,000 MW surplus electricity and it will generate 7,000 MW surplus power by the end of 2012, which is the overall production rate of many Indian states.

“Our vision is growth of Gujarat for India’s development. There are only four governments in the world who have responded very seriously to the issue of climate change. The Government of Gujarat has a separate climate change department. The renewable energy initiative has been taken up at a massive scale by the state.”

Shri Modi said that like the seven horses of God Sun, Gujarat has seven components of power at the Tapi river basin where there are seven power plants – nuclear, solar, thermal, bio-fuel, natural gas, hydro are based within a 20 km radius.

He proudly mentioned that while the Government of India had announced in budget 2011, a broadband connectivity pilot project for 3,000 villages in India, all the 18,000 villages in Gujarat have been interlinked through broadband since 2009.

“This is our canvas of development. We have sought satellite technology from the Central Government and it will be used to propagate
the model of E-governance in areas of telemedicine, agriculture, education, empowerment, rural development etc.”

While other Indian states are battling with short age of teachers in their education sector, Gujarat is the first in the country to establish a university to prepare world-class teachers. Very soon we will be exporting teachers from Gujarat to rest of the world who will give birth to new generations of Indian roots, Shri Modi told a cheering audience of NRIs.

At present there are 41 universities in Gujarat including a University for Forensic Sciences where even world’s greatest security agencies send in queries to crack their cases. Gujarat takes pride in setting up the Indian Institute of Temple Management which trains priests and send them to nearly 15 countries of the world with significant Indian population.

The Chief Minister said that best way to address any problem is to transform it into an opportunity. Speaking of global recession, the Chief Minister apprised that Gujarat took the initiative to host Global Investors Summit in 2011 which invited a record investment of 450 billion US dollars. He advocated that Prime Minister may convene a roundtable conference of all the States, prominent economists and policy makers to address the economic meltdown. This will go a long way in developing a synergistic approach towards converting the slowdown into an opportunity for all to excel.

He further cited the example of Tata’s Nano car project which came to Gujarat after falling in troubled waters and has become a success story followed by other auto majors establishing their manufacturing bases in Gujarat. He stressed that within a decade, the State will be producing five million cars annually. Shri Modi told the gathering that the metro coach manufacturing factory in Gujarat has yielded tremendous results and today coaches are supplied to all metro projects.

The state of Gujarat has the biggest ship breaking industry in the world and we have moved from ship breaking to ship repairing to ship making industry. Gujarat plan to contribute five percent to the world’s entire ship building industry.

Shri Modi informed the audience that according to Government of India’s recently released survey, Gujarat accounts for 72 percent of the total employment rate whereas rest of India stands at 28 percent. He further said that while the agriculture growth all over India stands at merely three percent since last 10 years, Gujarat has achieved 11 percent annual growth in agriculture in the same period.

Gujarat has brought a miracle in milk production and value added products with its milk products exported to Singapore, Europe and other countries. We don’t have raw materials unlike other Indian states but strong manuf acturing units to produce world-class technologies and polished items. Gujarat does not have iron-ore mines but is num ber one in steel manufacturing. 90% of the world’s diamond processing is based in Gujarat. Mr. Modi shared the growth story and approach of the state towards which is based on inclusiveness and done with speed, skills and on a grand scale. The most important aspect of his talk was in a democratic set up, great work can be done and at a speed. NRIs felt strong sense of belonging and cheered him throughout his speech. He also answered a number of questions from the audience.

He received huge applause as he proposed that Gujarat should host the 2015 Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas to mark the centenary of Mahatama Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa on January 9, 2015. The date is significant in the history of India’s struggle for independence inspiring all NRIs around the world. He invited everyone to Gujarat to make the event a big success. He appealed to Mr. Vyalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indians Affairs to announce the hosting of 2015 edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Gujarat.

At State interaction session with NRIs, Shri Narendra Modi spoke on balanced development of Gujarat in industries, agriculture and social sector. He added that the present growth rate of tourism in Gujarat is double of the entire country put together. He also appealed to non-resident Indians to give the benefit of their skills to the country.

Two professions that contributed most in India’s freedom struggle were the lawyers and the teachers. This tradition should continue and they should continue to contribute in nation-building exercise today, said Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the inaugural function of Gujarat National Law University(GNLU)’s new campus in Gandhinagar.

The Chief Minister muted an idea that similar to medical students who devote one year after completing their study in rural service, those passing out from law should also contribute five years for legal aid to needy people before joining corporates.

“Our every generation has heard this phrase that justice delayed is justice denied, but the solution of this problem is human resource development and infrastructure. Gujarat government has worked in both direction. We have employed 20-25% more budget to this area for infrastructure, while for human resource development we have tried to improve law colleges and establishment of law university. Such foundation work has been done with longer vision. Today’s students are going to serve the judiciary tomorrow. We have pumped in Rs 150 crore in GNLU and we will pump more in future as per the need,” Modi said.

Modi compared the campus of GNLU as mini-India, as students from almost all states of India come here to study. Modi said the university will surely make its place in India’s topmost universities thanks to its campus, and its building.

Modi recalled late Supreme Court lawyer Shri Kiritbhai Parikh and late Law minister of Gujarat Shri Ashokbhai Bhatt on this occasion and said, these two persons had worked hard to set up this university, but both of them are not here at this time.

Modi said the next goal is to make this campus a green campus. He talked about importance of Lok Adalats that provide justice just for 35 paise. He also talked about how in last one decade Gujarat has offered three new universities, namely Gujarat Forensic University, Gujarat National Law University and Raksha Shakti University to the nation.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today described the Centre’s latest move to deduct the OBC quota as a bid to divide the society on the basis of religion and caste, pushing the nation towards devastation.

“Centre’s move to deduct OBC quota is bid to divide society on the basis of religion and caste”

“Congress rulers at Centre has degraded dignity and decorum of Parliament and all democratic norms”

“Congress has lost confidence of its own coalition partners in the ‘cut-paste’ politics”

– Narendra Modi

Rounding up the day’s Sadbhavna fast at Mansa in Gandhinagar district as part of his state-wide ‘Sadbhavna Mission’, he said it would amount to muffle the rights of OBCs getting benefits of 27 per cent reservation in Gujarat. Even Constitutional experts oppose quota on the basis of religion.

Post-Independence, he said, single party rule in the country from panchayats to Parliament for about 40 years had made the Congress power-hungry, disintegrating the society instead of developing the nation. It has degraded the dignity and decorum of Parliament and all democratic norms. Lately, the Congress has lost the confidence of its own coalition partners in its ‘cut-paste’ politics.

Citing the example of restoring peace, unity and brotherhood in Gujarat during the last ten years, after years of communal clashes, Mr. Modi appealed to other states to take a cue from the ‘Sadbhavna Mission’ Gujarat to nullify the poison of communalism and casteism. Gujarat’s all round development has dazzled the nation as well as the world. He cited several examples of how Gujarat’s development has helped six-crore people, including the last man in last mile in remote rural and forest areas getting jobs.

Nearly 5,500 people assembled from all the four talukas of Mansa, Gandhinagar, Kalol and Dehgam in the dirtict voluntarily observed fast. Mr. Modi remembered the contribution of late Gujarat Assembly Speaker Mangubhai Patel.

Mr. Modi began his mission with three-day fast in Ahmedabad on September 17 last, followed by daylong fast at 33 places, one in each district and in eight municipal corporation areas. Today, he announced new development projects for Gandhinagar worth Rs.812-crore.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Ministers Anandiben Patel, Nitinbhai Patel, Ramanlal Vora, Jaysinh Chauhan, BJP State President R.C. Faldu. Prominent among those present on the occasion included BJP General Secretary V. Satish, MPs. MLAs, sants and seers, party leaders, District Guardian Secretary C.L. Meena and District Collector.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi announces Rs 1,111 crore for new

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi expressed doubts about the future of the country as the Central Government has paralyzed in the run-up to vote-bank politics and development works coming to standstill, embroiled in corruption, inflation.

Rounding up the day’s Sadbhavna fast at Amreli as part of his state-wide ‘Sadbhavna Mission’, he said that while Gujarat is progressing at a very fast rate but the Centre threatens to push the opposition leaders in jail, not afraid of such talks.

The Chief Minister announced 2,200 new development works worth Rs.1,111-crore for Amreli district. He also announced allocation of Rs.300-crore Balapur irrigation project and Santli dam project.

He repeatedly told the people at the helms of affairs to shun the decades old vote-bank politics and taking a cue from Gujarat’s Sadbhavna Mission adopt the development politics through for peace, unity and brotherhood.

About 24,000 people assembled from all the 11 talukas of the Amreli district to join Mr. Modi in his daylong fast.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi blasts Congress

for slashing OBC quota

Mansa played host to Narendra Modi’s sadbhavana mission on Thursday, where the chief minister unleashed his diatribe against the Congress government at the Centre while protesting against the provision of minority quota in the OBC reservation cleared by the UPA cabinet. Describing the Centre’s latest move to deduct the OBC quota as a bid to divide the society on basis of religion and caste, the CM stated that Congress is pushing the nation towards devastation.

In a meeting held at Gandhinagar on Wednesday, the Gujarat unit of the saffron party has decided to launch a statewide awareness campaign regarding possible consequences in the society following minority quota in OBC reservation. Modi also remembered the contribution of late Gujarat Assembly speaker Mangubhai Patel during his speech.

Apart from announcing an aid of Rs812 crore for various developmental works in Gandhinagar, the CM said that the quota would amount to stifling the rights of OBCs who avail benefits of 27% reservation in Gujarat. Even constitutional experts oppose quota on the basis of religion. Continuing his war of words, Modi further added that post Independence, a single party rule in the country from panchayats to parliament for about four decades has made the Congress power-hungry. This has disintegrated the society instead of developing the nation, he lamented, adding that it has also degraded dignity and decorum of parliament with scant respect for democratic norms. Lately, the Congress had lost the confidence of its own coalition partners in its ‘cut-paste’ politics, he added.

Citing Gujarat’s example of being a peaceful state during the last decade after years of communal clashes, Modi also appealed to other states to take a cue from the ‘Sadbhavana mission’ to nullify the poison of communalism and casteism.

Nationwide there is a buzz that Narendra Modi’s Gujarat has achieved a lot of progress and has made

Nationwide there is a buzz that Narendra Modi’s Gujarat has achieved a lot of progress and has made rapid strides in development and industrial progress largely on account of Modi’s inspiring leadership, unquestioned integrity and good governance. No wonder, 40 percent of the people interviewed in urban India in the LensOnNews poll have voted for Modi’s Gujarat as the state with least corruption and best record in governance.

Don’t be mistaken into believing that Modi’s popularity is an urban, metropolitan phenomenon, or that it is confined to Gujarat. The buzz about Modi and Gujarat is there everywhere, even in the remotest districts of Tamil Nadu, Assam and West Bengal. This has been reported by many journalists who have covered the BJP’s election campaigns in these states.

Throughout the country, Modi has come to epitomize high quality governance symbolized by unmatched delivery of public services, rapid strides in development, ever-growing public and private investments in the state, clean administration largely free from corruption etc. etc. No wonder, most people across the country would like to have a leader like Modi to lead them.

At a time when the brazenly corrupt Congress led UPA government at the Centre has shocked the nation with its unmatched record in corruption, Modi has zealously protected his image as an incorruptible leader, while also showing zero tolerance for corruption in his governance. While Modi’s personal integrity remains unquestioned, even his worst political rivals and critics concede that he has been able to provide a corruption-free government in Gujarat.

Incidentally, Modi is the only political figure anywhere in the world that WikiLeaks cables from the U.S. diplomatic establishment have shown in a positive light.

The change in U.S. administration’s view towards Narendra Modi which denied a visa to him in 2005 is a case in point. In a cable dated November 2, 2006 (84043: confidential), the Consul General in Mumbai, Michael S. Owen wrote, “Modi has successfully branded himself as a non-corrupt, effective administrator, as a facilitator of business…and as a no-nonsense, law-and-order politician…”

Under Narendra Modi, Gujarat has made rapid strides in development over the past decade. Go to any part of Gujarat and I bet you will see huge development works underway. Anna Hazare knew full well what is happening in Gujarat when he praised Modi for his leadership. Notwithstanding the unending ranting by pseudo intellectuals of Gujarat, people all across Gujarat say that the state is progressing well. What is important is that the message of development has traveled far and wide defying the designs of opponents to spread calumny about Modi and Gujarat.

Critics are quick to point out the religious divide in Gujarat and how post-2002 riots, Muslims live constantly in fear. All this is bunkum and motivated propaganda by vested interests. In most parts of the state, Hindus and muslims are living in perfect harmony and there is not an iota of discrimination.

Maulana Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi, a Gujarati himself, was vehemently attacked for saying that Muslims in Gujarat are experiencing development and are not discriminated against. He was only reflecting the sentiments of common Muslims across the state. Save some parts of Ahmedabad, Muslims all over the state are appreciative of Modi’s government and are even voting in significant numbers for the BJP under Modi.

Law and order situation in Gujarat is the best you can obtain anywhere in the country today. In a state that had witnessed periodic communal disturbances under the Congress rule, Gujarat had been remarkably peaceful over the last decade. There has not been a single incident or a day of curfew in Gujarat since 2002. Can any Congress ruled state match that record? Evidently, what goes on in the name of communal tension in Gujarat is propaganda unleashed by vested interests and there is absolutely no basis for such assessment.

Modi On a Roll in Gujarat

Such is the fast pace of development in Gujarat that people of the state have no doubt in their minds that Narendra Modi will get a bigger mandate in 2012 assembly elections. The Congress party gloating over a narrow victory in Gandhinagar corporation elections is unlikely to get any cheer in the next year’s assembly elections. As things stand now, the Congress party will be fortunate to win half the number of 59 seats it won in 2007 assembly elections and may end up with below 30 seats in 2012 polls.

Congress’s Evil Designs

The Congress party, which runs its ‘scam a day’ government at the Centre is feeling shaky and extremely vulnerable. How does the Congress party take on an unstoppable Modi who has caught the imagination of the entire nation and has emerged as the mascot of good governance? The egregiously corrupt Congress party knows only way: to tarnish the fair reputations of all its opponents to prove that there are no cleaner alternatives or to target them unfairly.

As Modi’s reputation of integrity is impeccable, it has put into operation a sinister plan to implicate Modi in a plethora of cases involving killing of Sohrabuddin and other incidents. To ensure success of this strategy, the UPA government is firing all cylinders by subverting various institutions, supplementing efforts of bogus NGOs, muzzling voices of support for Modi and managing media to sharpen its attacks.

Whoever has crafted this strategy for the Congress party has not learnt lessons from its past mistakes. Narendra Modi has emerged stronger from every attempt that the Congress party has made to destroy him. The present effort to implicate Modi by dubious means will be no exception.

“Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake,” said Napoleon Bonaparte. “Never interrupt your opponent when he’s destroying himself”, said Paul Begala, a political commentator. The Congress party is in a self destruct mode in targeting Narendra Modi. It must be allowed to fulfill its death wish.

Dear Friends, It is that time of the year when we bid farewell to what has gone by and welcome what

Dear Friends,

It is that time of the year when we bid farewell to what has gone by and welcome what lies ahead. As the joys and sorrows of 2011 pave way for the expectations and apprehensions of 2012, I felt it would be an appropriate exercise to go back in time and remember the year just gone by.

If there was one word that defined 2011, it was ‘protest’. Time Magazine summed up the essence of 2011 by naming ‘The Protestor’ as its Person of the Year. More than any individual, it was collective strength that defined the year gone by. Protests took place against Governments that were unable to live up to the aspirations of the people particularly the youth. Further, it was the cradles of human civilization that showed the way in challenging the status quo. If Egypt marked the rise of the Arab Spring, the Middle East saw protests aplenty while the people of Greece protested in the wake of economic downturn. Even America had its Occupy Wall Street Movement! When the forbearers of humankind become grounds of such protest it is nothing less than a call for introspection.

Talking about protest and 2011, it is impossible to forget events at home. We have been at the forefront of global protests in more ways than one.It is a matter of great pride to note that most of the protests across the World were non-violent! What can be a greater tribute to Mahatma Gandhi than the fact that even today, youngsters across the world are adopting his ways in order to make their voices heard! Be it the Independence Struggle in the first half of the 20th century, 1974 Navnirman Movement in Gujarat that challenged the might of an unhealthy status quo or 1975 Emergency when democracy came under severe strain, India continued to show the world the power of peaceful protest.

Protests in India took place as a distinct change of mood engulfed the nation. Bad economics, poor governance coupled with regular attacks on the federal structure of the country have made the people of this country impatient and disappointed. From corporate leaders to people on the street, there is near total talk of a ‘governance deficit’, a ‘policy paralysis’ covering the nation. This explains best the scores of protests across India against complacent Governments, be it in the states or at the Centre.

But, there remains a shining ray of hope in the midst of these otherwise difficult times. Rather than being disappointed or overtly critical we must view them as a ray of opportunity! During my recent trip to China, I spoke of how it is now for Asia to emerge as a growth engine of the world in the wake of the global financial crisis. The crisis of western capitalism is a unique opportunity for India to lead the world, accelerate her growth and pull out the millions of people from the clutches of poverty.

Friends, mass movements are not only about protests. I consider myself fortunate to be witnessing a mass movement that that is manifested in the spirit of Sauno Saath, Sauno Vikas (all together, growth for all), where inclusive growth with collective effort creates a unique mass movement for overall development. In Gujarat, we added a 4th S of Sadbhavana to our 3 S (Speed, Scale and Skill) model of progress.I am overwhelmed when I see so many people coming under one roof to show the world the power that drives Gujarat’s growth. Mass movements are as much created when the entire state administration including ministers and senior officials go out to the villages asking families to educate their girl child. When I read about a 16-year old specially abled girl breaking cricketing records in Khel Mahakumbh 2011 it was as much a mass movement suggesting large-scale inclusion! These instances inspire me to work harder so that the ocean of talent is recognized and is able to serve the country to the fullest.

Our democracy remains both young and strong. While we face numerous challenges from both within and outside, I am confident we will emerge stronger, like we have done in the past. In the coming year let us resolve to working towards taking India ahead. The Gujarat Government has declared 2012 as the ‘Year of Youth Power’ commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. No growth is compete till our youth is given an opportunity to shine and I am sure this will give a boost to youth talent and generate opportunities.

If there is one lasting message of 2011, it is that people power is necessary but not sufficient to transform nations. People power must be combined with good governance to bring about real, deep and lasting change. This combination can achieve almost everything from eliminating corruption to ending malnutrition and illiteracy. It can create a better future for ourselves and generations to come. In Gujarat, good governance coupled with development and harmony has amplified the power of 6 crore Gujaratis. I hope we can do the same as Indians for our nation. If 2011 unleashed the power of protest, let 2012 furtherdemonstrate the power of Sauno Saath, Sauno Vikas!

I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a
very Happy 2012! With the blessings of Almighty,
may the New Year bring both joy and success at your doorstep!

Hon’ble CM Shri Narendra Modi shared his thoughts on how sports must take shape of a mass movement. He gives the example of this year’s Khel Mahakumbh that has involved specially abled athletes. Shri Modi cites individual instances of specially abled sportspersons who have excelled this year thus giving him a personal sense of satisfaction. Here is the complete text of Shri Modi’s blog post…

Khel Mahakumbh – Celebrating sports as a mass movement!

Dear Friends,

This year’s Khel Mahakumbh was filled with joy, achievement and pride for the whole of Gujarat. Earlier this year I got a request to meet a team of specially-abled athletes from Gujarat who had made India proud at the Special Olympic World Summer Games held in Athens. Keen to interact with them, I invited them to my residence and spent two hours with them. It gave me immense joy and I can never forget the meeting. In two hours, I saw in these athletes the desire to conquer the world. There was a burning passion in them to perform wonders. Their enthusiasm was unparalleled seeing which I was deeply moved. After the meeting, I had resolved to do something for these talented children. I spoke to my team in the sports department and sought support from NGOs, associations working in this field.

We used this year’s Khel Mahakumbh as a platform for these athletes to shine. For the first time 60,000 specially-abled athletes participated in this year’s Khel Mahakumbh adding a sense of gratification that words cannot even describe! The number is a record in itself. In the opening ceremony, a contingent of differently-abled athletes led the march past. It was a moment of great pride for all of us. Their success is not limited to their families but to the whole of Gujarat. I am glad to know that many of these athletes excelled in their respective sports.

When Virender Sehwag mesmerized the nation with his double century, Gujarat also celebrated the performance of 16-year-old Kokila Motpia in cricket. With a limited vision, she went on to score 215 runs in a cricket tournament, which was a part of the Khel Mahakumbh! She belongs to Dangs district, one of the remotest districts but neither geography nor eyesight deterred Kokila from winning our hearts with the bat, ball and her passion for the sport.

During the Khel Mahakumbh cricket semifinals for specially-abled athletes, one sportsman Sarfaraj scored nine sixes in one match; and this despite being severely handicapped. When such achievers excel, my heart is filled with a sense of unmatched happiness!

Maunesh Bhavsar’s story can be a source of inspiration for generations of sportspersons to come. This passionate cricket fan lost his wrists in accident at the age of 14 but his passion for the game continued! His life long injury did not take him away from cricket and in the Khel Mahakumbh finals for the specially abled, he took 2 wickets conceding only 4 runs in an important over due to which his team won! Maunesh showed he was no quitter and he has proudly earned his place under the sun with his stellar performance!

Maunesh Bhavsar performing wonders with the bat and the ball.

The other success stories are equally touching! They can fill any face with tears of joy. A 20-year-old shy boy from Ahmedabad named Dipen Gandhi, with one hand and one leg displaced due to cerebral palsy, played excellent basketball and reached the national level. It feels great to know about the feat of Deval Patel, the sportsman with humble economic background and mental disability participating at the Special Olympics! His background or limitation did not deter him from reaching for the sky in a field that interests him.

Friends this is the celebration of talent we seek to have through events such as Khel Mahakumbh! I am of the firm belief that the true purpose of sports cannot be realised until it takes the form of a mass movement. This movement cannot be achieved only by a handful of sportsmen and women. Participation should be broad based, with people from all sections, all age groups and all regions to make it a true celebration of life. It is for this reason that during the inauguration of Khel Mahakumbh 2011, I urged everybody to visit the venues and enjoy the treat that awaited them! I asked them to go out and imbibe some of the passion these athletes display, to be a part of their joys on the field and share their temporary bout of unhappiness when they lose a game. When one does this, one can enjoy sport and the bliss of meeting talented achievers.

The achievements of these specially-abled athletes remain very close to my heart! In them I see a fire that will not extinguish come what may, a passion to perform overcoming the challenges and a determination to take this world by storm. They turned their limitations into talents and went on to achieve finest laurels. My wish is to continue to give these athletes a platform, an opportunity to shine. I do not want age, region or any physical limitation to come in their way of realizing their dreams. More importantly, I am glad that Khel Mahakumbh could play a small part in their large achievement! My special thanks to the parents of these children, and I assure them that the journey of their talented achievers is as much ours as it is theirs!Swami Vivekananda once said, “You will be nearer to God by playing football than by studying the Gita.” Khel Mahakumbh has made these words alive in the truest sense.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has called for expanding the banking industry as out-of-box service, to bring more people under its cover especially in rural and uncovered areas.

Speaking at a function here on Wednesday evening to mark the centenary celebration of Central Bank of India, Mr. Modi said the success story of a 30-year-old Gujarati Parsi Sir Sorabji founding a Swadeshi bank way back in 1911 should be made a subject of study in management schools and universities. It also calls for setting up chair professorship.

The Chief Minister said it was a matter of pride that out of bank’s ten best branches in different zones in the country, four are in Gujarat. He asked the bank management to train local youth to empower them for the facelift of the villages. He called for better utilization of thousands of tons of gold lying in India.

He said that Gujarat Government’s ‘Mission Mangalam’ is one project which has drawn a plan to allocate Rs.5,000-crore to 25-lakh women through Sakhi Mandals.

He honoured the staff of the bank’s prize winning branches and also the best Sakhi Mandals.

Speaking at the 100th anniversary function of the Central Bank of India, Gujarat Chief Minister today emphasized on out of the box development of banking services.

Modi said the Central Bank of India was established by a Gujarati Parsi young bank employee Sorabji Pochkhanwala who was just 30-year old at that time. His example should be put before the country and institutes like IIMs should study his example to throw light on this motivational chapter of history that was about establishing a Swadesi bank under the foreign rule. Modi suggested that the bank management should start Sorabji Chair in different universities. He said real treasure of the bank is trust of the people.

Modi said that 10 out of total 12 best zonal offices of the Central Bank of India are in Gujarat which proves that how fast the state is progressing. He said this is an answer to those who spread falsehoods that there’s no development in Gujarat.

The function was attended by Central Bank of India Chief General Manager Mr. Vesu, Regional Manager S.P.S. Agrawal, Reserve Bank’s Sudarshan Sen, Nabard’s Harish Dave, Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Parimal Trivedi and Mr. Sudhir Nanavaty of GLS.

Shri Modi awarded e-Ratna Award by the Computer Society of India!

Shri Narendra Modi has always been a firm believer in the use of technology. But what makes his vision unique is the ease with which he has incorporated modern technology in the working of his Government. He has often stated that e-governance for him is ‘easy, effective and economic’ governance thus summing up his vision for using technology in administration.

Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has pioneered the use of technology, which is shown by the various laurels it has won in the recent past and beyond. ‘eGov strategies and ICT enabled initiatives’ at the CMO were awarded ‘Best Government to Citizen Initiative of the Year Award’ at the prestigious eIndia summit in December 2011. The eIndia awards are among the most prestigious awards dedicated to landmark public and private initiatives in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) making the greatest impact on its citizens. The Government to Citizen (G2C) category aims at recognizing government departments that effectively used ICT to provide and improve government services, transactions and interactions with citizens.

Just before this in the first week of December the ‘ICT initiatives of the CMO’ won the ‘Award of Excellence- Departmental Level’ at the CSI Nihilent e–Governance Awards 2011. The CSI Nihilent Awards are given to recognize efforts in the e-Governance area and the evaluation criterion is based on twin indicators of results and enablers. A mandatory ‘Statement of Intent’ stating the reason for nomination to the CSI awards accompanies each nomination. The icing on the cake was that the CSI had conferred the award and title of ‘e-Ratna’ to Shri Narendra Modi for his contribution to e-Governance in Nov 2011!

Shri Narendra Modi’s brainchild, the grievance redressal initiative SWAGAT (State Wide Attention on Grievances by Application of Technology) has been a success story in its own right. Recently, it did Gujarat proud by winning the CXO Award 2011- The Technology Chapter for its role in improving public services. The jury for this award consisted of eminent individuals forms various walks of life. Launched in 2003, SWAGAT has even won the UN Award for Public Service and National e-governance award in the past. The CMO has also been accredited with ISO 9001:2008 certification since 2008 in the field of governance and administration.

Through these awards one can see the dynamic vision of Shri Narendra Modi turn into reality! One in which technology has played a key role in bringing smiles on the face of many people across the length and breadth of Gujarat. Shri Modi’s use of technology is as high in social media as it is in governance. His influence in the cyber world is tremendous. When he Tweets or updates his blog, the entire world listens. He shows the way as far as using technology is concerned be it to reach out to well-wishers or to incorporate it in governance.

Sense of social responsibility alone can instill discipline in society, authoritarianism can distort social values: Narendra Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today unveiled senior IAS officer of Gujarat cadre Dr. Rajivkumar Gupta’s book, ‘Public Discipline – From Thought to Action’, written in English as well as in Hindi, at a function here this evening.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Modi said that a sense of social responsibility alone can instill discipline among the public, authoritarianism can distort social values and take the society away from duty. Discipline should not be a felt as a burden. It should not shackle the society by strict rules, but bind the people within limits of realization

He said that observing discipline in a society should be a matter of habit. He said the concept of public and personal hygiene and cleanliness in the western culture is quite different. The concept of our respect for nation, society, mother-father, guru is linked to our duty. Religious functions establish faith and prepare mental makeup in religiousness. Discipline comes with a sense of responsibility.

When India became free, he said, it was our duty to serve and educate the society. But people started talking more about their rights, resulting into negative attitude like ‘what is mine’ and ‘why should I’. This led to distortion and indiscipline. It is time we have to come out of the degeneration. Family is the biggest factor to unite the society.

The Chief Minister complimented the author, Dr. Gupta, and the publisher Navbharat Sahitya Mandir. Dr. Gupta spoke about the salient features in his book. The function was attended by Ministers, IAS and IPS officers, literary glitterati and prominent citizens.

Modi speaks

-The biggest difference between us and the western world is the absence of our social hygiene and public discipline. Other countries go ahead because of societal discipline. We have very strong rules about how to handle our things, utensils etc. but the moment we are out, we spit on the road. The earth that we call Mother India, we go and spit on it! What kind of patriotism is this?

If food security is as much about stoking an agricultural revolution as about redistributing availab

If food security is as much about stoking an agricultural revolution as about redistributing available food to the poor, Gujarat is the place to seek answers from.

Gujarat is the one state in India that has consistently outperformed the rest of India in terms of agricultural production – and a large portion of this credit goes to Narendra Modi’s long-term vision.

Unlike industry – where Gujarat has always had an edge – agriculture is a freshly-minted success story.

This is not the view of Modi’s acolytes or of BJP partisans, but the Planning Commission, which is run by the PM’s pal Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

According to a report in Business Standard, a Planning Commission working group set up to suggest booster shots for agriculture during the 12th plan – which starts next April – said that Gujarat and Chhattisgarh were the states to emulate.

In the period from 1999-00 to 2008-09, Gujarat reported a huge 11.5 percent annual average growth in agriculture (at 1999-00 prices). This dwarfs the national average of 3.5 percent during the five-year period 2007-12 and just 2.2 percent in 2002-07.

Should one credit Modi for this miracle? Apparently, so. For, the real change happened after 2002 – the year after Modi took over. Says the Planning Commission working group: “A closer examination of the data in respect of Gujarat shows that the state made remarkable increase in raising agriculture production after 2002-03.”

The Planning Commission isn’t the only one impressed with agriculture’s progress in Gujarat. Another fan of Modi’s achievements is Shankar Acharya, former chief economic adviser to the government of India and honorary professor at Icrier in Delhi.

In an article titled Agriculture: be like Gujarat, Acharya gives six reasons why the state cracked the agricultural jinx.

Remember, Gujarat is not a state blessed with lots of irrigated land. Most of its land is semi-arid, and getting any crop out of it is a big effort.

So what did Modi do right? Six things, principally.

First, he focused on sustained water conservation and management programmes. Gujarat is one of the biggest users of drip irrigation in India today, and built many check dams, small ponds and minor irrigation sources. In 2008, Gujarat had 113,738 check dams and 240,199 little ponds dotting the state.

Second, the state launched a massive and well-coordinated extension effort – telling farmers what to grow, when to grow, how to grow and how to maximise output.

Third, Modi completely overhauled rural power supply. Even though supplies are subsidised, farmers get assured power. This contrasts with other states that offer free power, but irregularly and unpredictably.

Four, says Shankar Acharya, agriculture’s allied sectors – like livestock development – were given a boost. This ensured steady and sustainable growth in rural incomes – a prerequisite for comprehensive food security.

Five, Modi also promoted non-food crops and horticulture, Bt cotton, castor, and isabgol. Contrast this with the endless debates we now have about the dangers – or otherwise — GM seeds.

Six, Gujarat made huge investments in infrastructure – especially rural roads, electricity and ports.

A report by IIM professors Ravindra Dholakia and Samar Datta says it all in one paragraph.

“The phenomenon of high agricultural growth in Gujarat is not confined only to Bt cotton but is widely experienced in several sub-sectors, including animal husbandry, milk and egg production, fruit and vegetable production, and high value commercial crops…All this in the last decade or so has been achieved through massive effort on rain water harvesting through check dams, farm ponds, recharging of wells, etc; providing stable electricity for agriculture on a regular basis to all villages; market-oriented reforms; opening of agricultural exports; provision of supportive infrastructure like ports, linking roads, storage, internet and telecom facilities at village level; and, significant effort on agricultural extension by covering a large number of farmers with soil health cards, advice on nutrients, pesticides, crop selection, etc.”

The big question: is the Gujarat model replicable? Dholakia and Datta answer with an emphatic yes.

Clearly, there is no short-cut to food security. We do not know whether Gujarat has been as successful in making food available to it poor as it has been in raising rural incomes and agriculture. But it has got at least one part of the food security equation right.

Maybe the National Advisory Council of Sonia Gandhi would be better off taking a train to Gujarat to find out how key elements of food security – an agricultural revolution, among them – can be put in place.

“People of Gujarat will answer the anti-Gujarat elements in a democratic way” ~ Shri Narendra Modi

Concluding his daylong fast at Surat today as a part of Sadbhavna Mission Chief Minister Narendra Modi said that people of Gujarat has a power to answer the anti-Gujarat elements in a democratic way. Their answer is manifested through their support to the Sadbhavna Mission.

Citizens of Surat including the women, youths, society leaders, industrialists, saints, social workers and office bearers of various organizations thronged the venue conveying their support and well wishes to the Chief Minister and his mission.

Welcoming the large turnout Chief Minister announced development projects worth Rs.2100 crore for Suarat including the projects for BRTS and the construction of new bridges.
Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister said that people of Gujarat will not tolerate the defamation drive that has been launched by the anti-Gujarat elements. These elements have gone a long way and are even misusing constitutional organizations to defame Gujarat. Gujarat never troubles anybody but it also knows how to give a tough answer when it is being troubled by somebody.

The huge support of the people to the Sadbhavana mission is an answer to those who device plots to tarnish the image of Gujarat. Gujarat has left behind the venoms of communalism and casteism and has adhered to the values of peace, unity and harmony. Political pandits should analyze why people are voluntarily supporting the Sadbhavna fast and the growth polity of Gujarat, he said.

Mr. Modi said that people have not seen the instances of riots and curfews during the last decade. The reason behind this is the atmosphere of peace, unity and harmony that is prevailing in the state.

“People who play vote-bank politics can not realize the power of Sadbhavna Mission, because they don’t want real development. I don’t waste time behind those who are inclined to see Gujarat with negative mentality. I want to put India on the track of Sadbhavna”, he said.

Former BJP Member of Parliament from Kutch Pushpadan Gadhvi has come forward to save the winged visitors from Siberia from the jaws of death. Over 400 flamingos had died after colliding with high tension cables in the Khadir region in Kutch. Gadhvi is a trustee of a trust working to create awareness on saving birds, animals and even Gauchar land. Gadhvi who visited Khadir region said, “We need to take care of our winged visitors from dying in such large numbers.” The birds had died after they collided with the high tension transmission cables of Gujarat Energy Transmission Company (GETCO). GETCO had begun taking corrective measures after The Times of India reported on the death of scores of these birds along a recently electrified cable line. Gadhvi said after the completion of the Kutch Rann Utsav, which begins on December 9, he will invite expert bird watchers from the area and even the experts from the Bombay Natural History Society to deliberate on the issue of the death of birds after collision with high tension cables. “If the experts give an opinion that laying the cables underground was the best option, I would take the BJP party office bearers into confidence and talk to the minister of state for energy Saurabh Patel on laying cables underground.” He said the forest department team has taken some measures like having cellophane papers and reflectors installed along the high tension wires, which is proving to be effective. Also the department has installed light along the poles. He said that an awareness campaign will be organized to ensure that the birds were not poached or killed. Officials in the forest department said, “With the water receding, the birds are moving away from cables.”

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi convenes meeting of scholars

After the Sadbhavana fasts Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is all set to hit headlines again with another mega event–this time banking on another Narendra!

He will tap the energy of Gujarati youths for the 2012 assembly elections. After January 12, 2012, he will visit every district of the state to visit youth conferences that are to be organised as part of the yearlong celebrations of Swami Vivekanand’s 150th birth anniversary. Incidentally, Swami Vivekanand’s name was Narendra Nath Dutta before he took sanyas.

Sources close to the development confirmed that the chief minister will indeed be visiting every district next year but this time it will be to address the youth conferences planned for Swami Vivekanand’s birth celebrations.

“Swami Vivekanand’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations will be a yearlong affair. They will start from January 12, 2012 and continue till January 12, 2013.
The chief minister will be addressing youths at the mega event which will kick-off the yearlong celebrations. After that youth conferences will be held in every district. The chief minister will visit these conferences too and meet and talk to the youths of the state,” a source in the state government said.

The source said it is obvious even at the Sadbhavna fasts that the chief minister is focusing on young voters for the elections next year. “In this backdrop, the youth conferences planned next year will certainly help him politically. The reason is that for today’s youth, Swami Vivekanand is a role model. Moreover, Modi is popular as a political leader among the youths of Gujarat,” the source claimed.

Political observer and writer Vishnu Pandya sees it slightly differently. He said that the youth conferences planned for Swami Vivekanand’s 150th birth anniversary shouldn’t be seen as a political gambit. “Of course, Swami Vivekanand, Subhash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh are figures which today’s youth want to connect to. Someone needs to try and inspire the state’s youths through Swami Vivekanand’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations. Of course, if the CM addresses youths at these conferences, it will be to inspire young people socially, culturally and politically,” Pandya said.

He said that Swami Vivekanand had spent maximum time in Gujarat during his tour of the nation and it is in the fitness of things that Gujarat celebrates the event as a guiding force to the nation. The youth should imbibe and emulate his ideals and philosophy in practical life. It was Swami Vivekanand who had inspired the youth with the slogan of ‘India First’.

Ahmedabad is the best of India’s mega-cities , edging out Pune, Mumbai and Delhi in a very close contest. That’s the key finding of an exclusive opinion poll conducted for The Times of India by leading market research firm IMRB across the country’s eight biggest urban agglomerations.

But before residents of these cities start celebrating, here’s a sobering fact. Even the best rated of them barely made it to a rating of “average” on a scale ranging from “very poor” to “very good” . Clearly, there’s a lot our town planners need to do before we can boast of our metropolises , new and old, becoming world-class . The cities we chose for this survey were the only ones with populations of 5 million or more according to the 2011 census.

Most cities have their areas of strength and weakness in a matrix of 30 parameters, which ends up evening out the balance quite a bit at the overall level . However, bottom-placed Kolkata showed up as a laggard on most counts.

The results throw up an interesting poser: Could it be more than a coincidence that Ahmedabad and Pune, which are at the top of the rankings, are also the two smallest cities on the list? Perhaps India’s cities manage reasonably when they are of middling size by metropolitan standards but find it increasingly difficult to cope as they grow beyond a certain size. The experience of Bangalore certainly seems to suggest that. The two really big cities that have also done quite well in the rankings, Delhi and Mumbai, also have historical advantages, one by virtue of being the political capital and a virtual city-state and the other due to its long reign as the country’s commercial capital.

After being rated as India’s best mega city by a national newspaper through an exclusive poll barely three days ago, Ahmedabad today bagged the national award in the category of “Best City in the Implementation of Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP)” under Jawaharlal Nehru National Renewal Mission scheme.

The award was jointly received by Gujarat Urban Development Minister Shri Nitinbhai Patel and Ahmedabad Mayor Shri Asit Vora from Union Urban Development Minister Shri Kamal Nath at the sixth yearly conference held here. Besides the award, Government of Gujarat also received a cheque of Rs 3 lakh as incentive.

The city of Ahmedabad has been appreciated for successfully implementing and facilitating basic services to urban poor under JnNURM. The jointly concerted efforts of the Gujarat Government, Government of India and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have borne great results in giving a facelift to the city’s physical and civic infrastructure through various schemes.

Under JnNURM, a whopping Rs 523.95 crore has been approved for constructing 32,640 houses, out of which 28,522 dwelling units have already been constructed and 24,052 units have also been allotted to beneficiaries. Earlier, the Municipal Corporation of Ahmedabad had also received a national award for “Innovations in Services to Urban Poor (Housing)” from Government of India.

Receiving the award, Gujarat Urban Development Minister Shri Nitinbhai Patel said that the State Government has started “Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shahery Vikas Yojna” in 2009 investing Rs.7000 crores for providing basic amenities to all who are residing in urban areas. This reform driven policy aimed to fulfill all basic needs of urban poor also.

Moreover, the Government of Gujarat has approved seven townships under Housing Township Policy, 2009. This will attract an investment of Rs.13650 crores and more than 1 lakh houses will be constructed under the project.

Giving details of the schemes for poor people, Shri Patel stated that Gujarat Government had organized 72Garib Kalyan Melaswherein Rs.435 crores were distributed to two lakh beneficiaries.

The Government of Gujarat has successfully implemented the ‘Insitu Development Model’ to provide houses and basic amenities to the population livinginslums. The State Government has also focused upon rehabilitating the displaced families in the cities.

The minister pointed out that the Government of Gujarat has taken laudable steps to resolve the serious problem of urbanization and urban planning. It is noteworthy that the budget provision of Rs. 126 crores made in 2004-05 for Urban Development Department has been increased by 24 folds to Rs.3030 crores.

Shri Patel further informed that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has constructed two ring roads at the outskirts of the city to address the traffic logjam at the entry and exit points. Such schemes shall be implemented in other cities as well to control traffic congestion with the aid of Central Government. To maintain sustainable standards of cleanliness and efficient sewage disposal in smaller cities, the Government of India should allot adequate funds to the State Government to facilitate scientific disposal of solid waste and liquid waste.

Shri I.P. Gautam, Principal Secretary (Urban Development Department), Shri Guruprasad Mohapatra, Commissioner, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and other senior officers attended the function.

As a follow-up action of Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China, the latter’s energy sector firm TWBB here today signed a memorandum of understanding with Gujarat’s Atlanta Transformers and Electrical to set up an ultra mega high voltage power transformers and reactors plant on Padra-Jambusar Highway near Vadodara at a cost of Rs.400-crore as a joint venture.

It was signed by TWBB CEO Mr. Li Yuha signed for the Chinese company. The plant will start construction in February 2012 and start production from April 2013, to produce equipment ranging from 750-1200 KV.

Chairman of Atlanta group thanked the Gujarat government, Chief Minister and INDEXT-B for their support.

Mr. Li Yuhai said that TWBB has selected Gujarat for partnership keeping in mind the growth-oriented policies, quick decision making, transparency and absence of labour rage in Gujarat. He also invited Mr. Modi to visit TWBB plant in China.

Chief Minister outlined how the ties between Gujarat and China are growing up in various sectors. He said that Gujarat government is focusing on the renewable energy sources like solar, wind and tidal and has now become a power-surplus state. Looking at the demand for the infrastructure of power transmission, the new ultra mega high-voltage transformer plant will be instrumental in providing resources for power transmission.

Office bearers of Atlanta group, Industries secretary M. Sahu, Industry Commissioner B B Swain and MD of Indext-b Mukesh Kumar was also present on the occasion.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi thanks China for

acting on his request

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today thanked China for acting on his request of speeding judicial process for 22 Indians imprisoned in China for last almost two years.

Cheif Minister Modi on Twitter said, “thankful to China for acting on my request of speeding judicial process for 22 Indians imprisoned there for 2 years. Today is the verdict!’

It should be mentioned here that in his recent official tour to China, the Chief Minister had raised the issue of jailed diamond traders of India in China.

22 Indian diamond traders are in jail in China since January 2010. They were held there for alleged smuggling. Most of them are from Gujarat’s Surat.

Shenzhen court delivered verdict today in this case, ordering release of most of the diamond traders.

Narendra Modi’s China visit started showing results

Judgment in case of 22 Indians, mostly Gujaratis languishing in Chinese jail
delivered today :
13 persons freed, 9 to serve 3–6 years in prison

Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s diplomatic efforts and statesmanship shown during his China visit has resulted in a great relief to 22 Indian diamond traders, mostly from Surat and Mumbai, arrested in China since January, 2010 without any hope, allegedlyfor smuggling diamonds. The efforts made so far for their release, had not yielded any results. However, after Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi took up the matter with Chinese authorities, the case was expedited and judgment delivered today.

As per judgment passed today, 11 persons have been found innocent and to be deported within 15 days from China. Out of the remaining 11 persons, one person has been given 1 year and 11 month sentence and another person 2 years in prison, which means they will also be freed soon as they have already spent about two year in prison. Other 6 persons have been have been given 3 years prison sentence, another 2 persons have been awarded 5 years prison sentence and one person has been given 6 years in prison. Keeping in view the prison sentence given to an Australian national of 14 years, the Indians have been given lighter sentences.

During his last month visit to China, Shri Narendra Modi raised the issue with top Chinese leadership and apprised them of the plight of the 22 Indians mostly from Gujarat, languishing in Chinese jail. He brought the concern of their families to the notice of Chinese leadership. The Chinese leadership has attached great importance to the visit of Shri Narendra Modi and was keen to make the visit a grand success. During the high level meetings, it is understood that top Chinese leadership promised the Chief Minister to take up the matter on priority in view of the request made by the Chief Minister and its friendly ties with India and particularly with Gujarat State. The Chinese authorities assured the Gujarat Chief Minister that the pending trial of the case will be expedited and judgment will be delivered soon. These 22 Indians have been in Chinese jail for almost two years.

Keeping in view the importance of the visit, Indian officials had also requested the Chief Minister to take up the matter with the top Chinese leadership. After Chief Minister, Narendra Modi’s intervention, the case has been taken by the Chinese authority on priority. As a first step, immediately after the visit, Chinese authorities allowed the Indian Ambassador to China Dr. S. Jaishankar and Counsel General, Guangzhou Mr. Indramani Pandey to meet these 22 detainees in jail.

Prior to his visit to China, some relatives of detainees urged Shri Narendra Modi to take up this issue with the Chinese Government. They had also requested Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court for lenient and sympathetic judgment. The diamond traders, mostly Gujaratis, were arrested by Shenzhen customs officials for allegedly smuggling diamonds from Hong Kong to China on January 8, 2010. Shenzhen is a major city in China’s Guangdong province close to Hong Kong.

Chief Minister asked his officers to follow up the matter. He has been quite concerned about the health of these young people in the Chinese jail and from time to time enquired about their health. Many of them also developed high blood pressure and their health started deteriorating. These young Indians are vegetarian and were lodged in Chinese jail without much hope and therefore started falling sick. They were in a hopeless situation. He had requested the Indian Ambassador and Consul General to take care of their welfare. The matter was regularly followed up with MEA authorities and Indian Embassy in China.

After being informed of the latest development in the matter Shri Narendra Modi said “During my visit to China in November, I took up the case of 22 Indian youth, who are lodged in Chinese jail, before the Chinese leadership purely on humanitarian ground. I emphasized that Indian nationals languishing in Chinese jail since last two years should be given speedy trial and they should get justice. I am thankful to the Chinese Government for expediting the trial and ensuring that judgment is delivered today.”

Sadbhavna Mission sets in new political culture in the country, might prove political pundits’ evaluation about Gujarat wrong

Chief Minister Narendra Modi today that his Sadbhavna Mission has laid the foundation stone of an entirely new political culture in the country, sure to prove all political pundits wrong if ever they attempted to evaluate the State’s achievements with an jaundiced eye.

Rounding up his daylong fast as part of the district-wise Sadbhavna Mission at Bhavnagar, he threw open challenge to the Prime Minister to compete with the developments in Gujarat. He said Gujarat has registered a ten per cent growth in agriculture, against a national average of hardly 2.5 per cent. He felt pity at the Centre’s futile efforts to destabilize Gujarat.

Overwhelmed by the continuous stream of nearly 50,000 people making a beeline at the venue of the fast and 10,000 of them spontaneously joining his fast, he said the political pundits might have to wait till to gauge the public mood and political undertones of the Sadbhavna Missions till all it is over at all the 33 places across the state. He attributed the success of his ongoing mission to the support of six-crore Gujaratis.

Mr. Modi said that Gujarat has provided a new fodder to the political analysts to look at developments taking place here. It has provided a new ray of hope amidst an atmosphere of gloom and pessimism prevailing in India. It has helped people look at things beyond vote bank politics, spreading the poison of communalism and casteism. The State has also attracted global attention. A host of countries like China, Japan, Korea and Canadaare keen to partner Gujarat.

He said that tourists’ arrival in the state has increased by 40 per cent during the last decade. Farmers are getting market prices for parting with their land. Car manufacturers are coming in hordes to build 50-lakh cars per year with potential to provide jobs to five-crore youths of Gujarat. Dholera SIR is growing lakhs of rupee from the barren land.

For Bhavnagar, the Chief Minister said that Gujarat’s state-level Republic Day function as well as the 150th anniversary of Prabhashanker Patna in this city. The city’s development would increase by leap and bounds after the Dholera SIR, Ro-Ro service and Kalpsar across the Gulf of Cambay.

It was his eleventh fast as part of day-long fast to be undertaken at seven municipal corporations and 26 districts, since he had launched the state-level Sadbhavna Mission from Ahmedabad on September 17.

Those who spoke about the achievements of Gujarat in various fields included Agriculture Minister Dilipbhai Sanghani, Minister of State Saurabhbhai Patel, Minister of State for Fisheries Purshottam Solanki, Vasanbhai Ahir, Members of Parliament Vijay Rupani and Rajendrasinh Rana, BJP State President R.C. Faldu and Mr. Bhupendrasinh Chudasama.

Prominent among those present on the occasion included Finance Minister Vajubhai Vala, Parliamentary Secretary Mohanbhai Kundaria, MPs, MLAs and officers.
